「Working on My Very First Miniature Kit!」
Hi, this is a behind-the-scenes on my experience in making the Corner of Happiness: Taste of Life DIY miniature kit!
It was from a couple of years ago, we found a stall selling miniature craft kits while strolling around the mall. My sister bought me the very same model I've been eyeing on my online shopping cart as a birthday present.
Me and my sister both love miniatures since we were very young, but making them from scratch require a lot of time, materials, and tools we don't really have (especially if you don't want them to look crudely made). Luckily, now with a Do-it-yourself kit, that wasn't going to be much of an issue! ...or so I'd hoped as a miniature newbie.
Tumblr media
These are all the other variants of this series. I really dig the pink bunny aesthetics they're going for, though it's not as apparent on this one.
The kit also included custom wooden parts, wires, beads, and a tool kit necessary for the build. It also comes with an acrylic glass for dust-free casing!
Tumblr media
Most of the parts were made from a print-out glossy paper with all the items' photo-real textures; some of which are just to be pasted onto a harder material like wood shaped similarly to the object, but most of them are just the paper itself.
I guess doing it this way cuts costs for manufacturing, but it was very challenging to work with, in my opinion. You'll see what I mean in a bit.
Tumblr media
And here's a preview of the instruction booklet's contents.
I thought it was worded weirdly at parts, but still understandable enough with plenty of visuals to go with it.
Tumblr media
Starting with the base/foundation of the model before anything else seemed to be the best option... though I was very, very tempted to skip to work on the food items. I don't know why, but miniature food just gets me really giddy.
But, gotta hold backミcan't make food without the oven and all.
Tumblr media
I then worked my way through the biggest parts and set them down permanently with the paste provided in the kit.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
...but I probably shouldn't have glued the kitchen island in place before placing the handles...aiyah one of them is really crooked-
I'm not familiar with wirings, so setting up the LED lights made me panic a little. But somehow, it all worked out! I'm confident that if an idiot like me can get through this, so can anyone!!
Tumblr media
And now I present to you: The Paper Struggles™
+ and a "It's so fakken small" compilation.
Tumblr media
The booklet is a lie lol that knife .jpg is 5x bigger than what you've got to work with-
Tumblr media
I remember both bread toasts being squished from the tweezers... thankfully tiny enough for anyone to really see, but there's definitely a shtload of dents on there...
Tumblr media
The wire handles for the mug was such a struggle lol it kept falling off no matter what, so I just kept adding glue and just... held on to it with pressure against the bead for what felt like eternity until it dried completely.
Tumblr media
I also remember struggling with the semi-origami flowers quite a bit, but I think the trauma of it all made my brain forget to take photos-
Next up are the wires. I never really considered it before this kit, but they can actually have a lot of use when it comes to making miniature furnitures and accessories.
This was unfortunately before I got into making earrings, so I didn't have the right tools (pliers) to straighten them out. The very thin tweezers that came with the kit didn't help that much, so I just had to use my fingers.
The results... are as wobbly as the hands that created them lol I've learned my lesson...
Tumblr media
that incomplete circle pains me so
And here we have my favorite partミthe food! All the tiniest of detailing, the garnishing, the arrangements... it just makes me so happy, I really don't understand why.
Tumblr media
The original instructions only intended the oranges to be on the chopping board, but not in this household!!!
Oh, and the oranges were sliced up polymer clay rolls that I know are popularly used as nail art? Me and my sister used to sell polymer clay accessories back in the day and it felt very nostalgic seeing those tubes again.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And here we have the finished model! ☆
I made a few changes from the original intended 'look' + added a couple of my own beads from my hoard material collection from childhood I planned on using for when we started making miniatures... and the time for use was most certainly now!
Tumblr media
Aaand here's a bird's eye view before completing with the dust-free acrylic glass encasing top lid.
~ CONCLUSION ~
Overall, I thought it was really fun, despite the unforeseeable challenges along the way. Even as a newbie with little to no experience working on actual builds + with only the enthusiasm and love for miniatures to desperately cling to when the damn wires wouldn't stick on their corresponding surfaces properly... it seemed to turn out pretty OK!! I expected a whole lot more screaming and dying inside lol If you're interested in getting it, I think simply searching up "Corner of Happiness" or "Taste of Life DIY miniature kit" should get you some results on your preferred online shopping platform! ※NOTE: I do have to stress to make sure to check (either through other user reviews or the listing's description) if the seller is including a tool kit in your purchase. A lot of the items included in this kit you can probably find at home, but not a lot of people are so crafty to just have them lying aroundーespecially if you're a complete newbie with crafts/miniatures! You'll have a hard time trying to wing it without tools. ※also, they might just skimp on you by not including them, but still have you pay for the full price lol it's definitely worth considering when purchasing.
I know a lot of parents may see these kits to buy for their kids, but unless ➀ they're also helping out the kid in the process or ➁ if the kid in question has no interest or patience for these kind of things, I think it's best not to buy them DIY kits like these if you don't want to risk wasting money. But that's just my opinion, as a broke adult who's always wanted one of these haha
The amount of care, effort, and attention to make sure everything is sturdy enough and visually clean can be very drainingミ but if you're willingミanyone can do it!
Tumblr media
And of course, a final very cool look on LED lights turned on at night.
This project was done around 2022ĺš´. I've done one more miniature kit since then that was way more complex, but that's a whole 'nother journal entry for another day...
For now, here's a mini update of how this Taste of Life is hangin' after two years have passed:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
please don't mind Mr. Gamma side-eyeing you in the BG-
The batteries for the LED unfortunately need replacing and one of the wire chairs kind of died a bit, but it's still alive + currently displayed and part of my makeshift not-all-Shounen Jump Manga corner! I might make a separate blog about that too...
But until thenーthanks for reading ( ´ ꒳ ` )⸝ see you in the next one!★

Exercises To Keep Your Kids Busy While You Work From Home
Tumblr media
Working from home looks like a simple task for several but ask them who have toddlers and youngsters at home! It’s absolutely beautiful to be around them and tease their silly activities but the sole problem is once you are working or attending meetings and your kids are jumping everywhere the place. In such cases, you're definitely trying to find ways to stay your kids busy or those activities that keep your kids busy. Activities to stay Your Kids Entertained & Busy
1. Good Reads Even though kids might not like reading, you'll always encourage them with good storybooks and make them realize the genre they're curious about. Comic books, colorful stories mixed with a lot of pictures, and other interesting reads might be added to their shelf. In case, your kids wish to explore online, guide them to browse online books, and find something that they fall crazy with. 2. Educational Games Games that sharpen their minds and teach them good skills might be one of the simplest activities to stay kids busy while performing from home. As the download new apps or play games like chess, puzzles, sudoku, etc. online, you'll dive into your work without the noise and disturbance. Yet we might recommend you to line their screen time and diverge them for a few other activities later. 3. Play Dates Invite your kid’s friends to return home and allow them to spend a while together. As soon as these kids get busy with their activities, you've got learned the thought of the way to keep kids busy. Isn’t that right? Let the duo or trio make clay art, enjoy some dance, or color the walls together(only if the colors are often removed, haha!). otherwise, you can even spread the sheets on walls which may be colored or chalked, as per the supply. 4. Audiobooks Although we told you to urge your kids some good books, a number of them need story oration. For them, you'll get great audiobooks online which has the good capability to stay your kids entertained for hours. you want to also ask them what are some things that they learned with audiobooks and interact with them in your free hours. along with side audiobooks, your encouragement to read books will work efficiently. 5. Art Kit A beautiful and packed art kit may contain a spread of colors, clay, sketch pens, and paints that keep them busy and excited. allow them to explore their creative side once you are busy together with your conference calls or cooking meals in between. Yes, you'll need to clear the mess they need creating afterward but their happiness and your swift working hours matter the foremost, right? 6. Coloring Books Coloring books are different from artwork your kids could enjoy. All you would like to try to do is stock yourself with a spread of coloring books and organic colors along. This activity not only keeps them busy once you are performing from home but also keeps them calm and positive, believe us. Keep praising them or guiding them to not cross colors out of the boundaries. 7. Encourage Them For Cooking With cooking, we mean to encourage your kids to undertake new activities that they haven’t tried before. For this, your kid must be 8 years old and above. you'll give them recipe books for young ones that include flameless cooking and straightforward recipes. You never know this activity may become a skill within the future, stay positive. And in fact, this activity will keep your kids busy while you're employed from home and taste their dishes in between. 8. Give Them A Lego Challenge Ask your child to intensify every day and make something challenging together with his Lego kit. Put in some competition with them and ask them to offer their best shot by evening. this may confirm that he will pour his heart into it and check out to win the sport. Of course, don't force him to win the competition, take it as fruitful thanks to keeping your kids busy while you're employed from home. 9. Deepen Their Interest In Favorite Activities If you're confused about what we are talking about then log into your Netflix account and visit the youngster's section. you'll put some amazing documentaries which inspire them to complement a replacement activity within them. for instance, play famous baseball, basketball documentaries, or an inspiring story of a swimmer. Yes, there must be a group screen time for them but this activity is basically helpful in both ways. Agreed? 10. allow them to Visit Online Museums Even though you can't leave your home due to work, you'll always found out Google virtual tours for your kids to go to museums all around the world. Tell them a day to explore one museum and what's that they need liked or not inside the architectural masterpiece. this is often how you'll keep your child busy and informative at an equivalent time. 11. Tent Camping In Backyard Tell your kid to organize fruit and snack basket because it is that the day for camping within the backyard. albeit you don’t have a flowery tent, you'll create one with old sheets, right? allow them to spend a while and be creative in their cool home. Ask them to embellish it the way they like and even take a nap, as long as the weather is suitable. 12. DIY Crafts DIY crafts are so common then creative nowadays and lots of people have created wonders with their skills. It’s a tremendous thanks to keeping your kids busy for extended hours also. you'll ask them to form wall art, dreamcatchers, quilt art, and far more. Just set them free and that they will surely create wonder with the activity while you're employed from home peacefully. Conclusion Have you got your idea about the way to keep your kids busy while you're employed online? We are sure you've got but which one is it, allow us to know within the comments section below. you'll even suggest to our readers another option lingering within the mind here, your response is awaited.

BEST ONLINE STORES TO BUY ART SUPPLIES
Tumblr media
The essence of the artist is their art supplies, so finding an online art supplies store that has everything you need is great. Artists and craftsmen consider several factors when buying, but the deciding factor is the quality and price of the product. When you shop online, other factors are bound to follow the list, including shipping costs, return policies, and customer service.
Art providers understand artists' needs and have mobilized to meet them. Depending upon what is most important to you, you can choose an online art supply store that suits your needs. The best art stores are the ones you feel connected to. If you are an art lover, here are 6 online stores to buy art and craft supplies.
1. Penkraft
Penkraft is one of the leading brands when it comes to Art & Craft supplies, the unique thing about Penkraft is that they offer DIY (Do it Yourself) kits, the packaging & the quality of the products offered are top-notch. Penkraft offers a special "Course In a Box" concept where you get every material needed for doing a course. The kit contains Coursebook, the course schedule, practice books, and equipment such as the calligraphy nibs, pens, pencils, etc as required for the particular course.
2. Amazon
Amazon has a broad collection of all types of products and art supplies. You can find standard supplies likes watercolors and pencils, Amazon is also great for finding art supplies for kids, and there are many washable paints. In addition to a wide range of products, Amazon also has Prime Advantage, which provides free shipping on every order. In addition, most sellers will provide return and refund services within 30 days of shipping. The main disadvantage of Amazon is that it is not a professional art website, which means you may find products that don't necessarily meet the standards you want. For novice artists, it is difficult to distinguish what is high quality and what is not.
3. Creative Hands
This one is for those looking for deals. Fully equipped, Creative Hands owns many brands and many SKUs. The navigation of the page is very easy to use and the categories are well divided. The brand imports its fine art materials from other brands like Arches, Conte A Paris, Cretacolor, Daler Rowney, Fabriano, Liquitex, Golden, Sennelier, etc. Additionally, the site also offers an equally impressive collection of drawing supplies, as well as sketch sets, charcoal and graphite pencils, pens, and markers.
4. Imagination Online
Imagination is one of the leading handicraft supply stores in India, selling a large number of international brands and products at affordable prices. Their artistic part includes sliding materials, medium, mica powder, pastel colors, professional pencils, and a range of pencil colors. The portal is well-designed, which makes shopping on it easy and clutter-free
5. Himalayan Fine Art
The Himalayan Fine Arts collection includes calligraphy sets, charcoal pencils and pens, sketch paper, erasers, fixers, pastel paper, pens, and markers, etc. The company is very customer-friendly. If items are missing from the portal, customers can notify them by email. If the product is available in the store, they will ship the product.
6. Skill Supplies
Online shop for all your art and craft requirements, this site deserves a standalone recommendation for the SKU calculator it has. For the artist, this site gives you a feel like a kid at the candy store with its wide collection of pens, markers, multi-liners, sketch pads, graphic accessories, and many other drawing materials. Prices are competitive and exports are high quality
Buying art supplies online is easy and fun.
You can't create beautiful works of art without high-quality supplies. These websites offer a variety of options. To make the most of the online shopping experience, most return policies allow easy refunds and exchanges. This way, if what you want is not what you expect, you can easily return it. In some cases, you can ask for something better than expected in the end. One thing that the best art supply sites have in common is that shopping can be very fun-looking for old favorites, discovering new ones, or finding amazing deals.
Penkraft conducts classes, course, online courses, live courses, workshops, teachers' training & online teachers' training in Handwriting Improvement, Calligraphy, Abacus Maths, Vedic Maths, Phonics and various Craft & Artforms - Madhubani, Mandala, Warli, Gond, Lippan Art, Kalighat, Kalamkari, Pichwai, Cheriyal, Kerala Mural, Pattachitra, Tanjore Painting, One Stroke Painting, Decoupage, Image Transfer, Resin Art, Fluid Art, Alcohol Ink Art, Pop Art, Knife Painting, Scandinavian Art, Water Colors, Coffee Painting, Pencil Shading, Resin Art Advanced etc. at pan-India locations. Skills I personally think every witch should have:
Tumblr media
(Pic source) Hello. This is an opinion piece.
I keep seeing a lot of witches- especially younger witches- rely on cheap goods from chain metaphys stores and expensive etsy products in order to maintain their craft. I’m not completely against this idea- where else could I get tacky statuary if not the East Meets West in the mall?? But I do think that such a reliance stifles the creativity that really powers witchcraft as well as limiting a person’s personal investment in their own craft. So. Here are a few skills I think every witch should have at least some mastery of in order to get in touch with their craft and witchcraft’s place in their lives.
 1: Cooking.
Tumblr media
You don’t need to be an Iron Chef-level competitor in order to work in a little bit of cooking in your life. Even if it’s only googling diy ramen toppings (I prefer the peanut sauce variant myself), cooking for yourself gives you a) a level of comfort in creating and experimenting with flavor combinations and substitutions, and b) a small expertise in herbs and spices that often make their way into witchcraft. Even if you don’t end up a kitchen whiz witch, you’ll at least have the chance to really think about herbs’ and food’s places in your craft. Oh, and of course, breadmaking is a valuable skill everyone should know.
2: Sewing.
Tumblr media
At the absolute minimum, you will at least know what to do when there’s a rip or a run in that fancy tapestry. Or your tarot mat. Or your cloak. Or your satchel. Or- I could really go on forever at this point.
I don’t care if you take a local class on a sewing machine down at the rec center or if you buy a sewing kit from the dollar tree: learn how to sew a seam. Any kind of seam. Ugly seams hold things together. If you find out you like to sew, and maybe get into some fancy pinterest embroidery, stitch witchery produces some lovely charms for the house and for clothing. If not, you can at least trust your deck bags and mats to last a little bit longer in your life.
3: Basic Woodworking.
Tumblr media
Not going to lie, I got stiffed on this one in high school. The grade above me was the last to receive woodworking lessons. But if you can learn to use a handsaw without chopping off your hand, you’re set in my book. Well, handsaws and the patience to sand things. You deserve a choice in how you get to store your altar supplies, and what to set your altar on, and how to shape your shrine- and that choice should not be limited to Ikea in-store shelving options. Just thinking of the paint options for a handmade spice cabinet is making me giddy.
4: Literally any trade.
This is more of a catch all, but really, think about learning any one of these skills. Just one. That’s all you need, really:
Soapmaking
Silversmith
Regular smith
Jewelry-making
Crochet
Knitting
Weaving
Machine sewing
Glass blowing
Woodwork
Academic research (yes, this is a skill)
Candlemaking
Gardening
Traditional Art
Digital art (Why not? it’s the 90s)
Pottery wheel sculpting
Small-scale construction
Broom-making
Pick one from the list. All of these things, in one way or another, can completely change how you connect with your craft. I, for instance, can sew and crochet. I’m not a star at it, and I won’t be winning any awards for my...creative...approaches to solving problems with my yarn, but I can make any mat I please for my altars and churn out tarot bags in half a day at most. Any sewing ability not only keeps my clothes in good shape for longer, but also helps me make rudimentary jewelry and embroider little charms that decorate my house as well as bless and protect it.
And honestly? Both I learnt from online tutorials. There’s no need to weep into your bedsheets at your own “ineptitude” and “inability”; if you really want to learn it, it’s the internet age. Even if you can’t get to a class, and your high school killed its own home-ec program, you can get as many forms of tutorials and instructions as your internet provider (or your local library) can provide. Youtube is phenomenal for this. The only exception I can think of are the high-heat trades mentioned above, but hey, you can sign up for classes on groupon nowadays. Learning more than one of these trades would be phenomenal, of course, but they all allow for self efficacy in your creative expression in your craft, which is what I really hope I can drive home in this post.
Buying cool stuff for your altar is dope as hell, and I think it is safe for us all to indulge in a little hedonism in the crystal shop every now and then. But you should have at least one way for you to let your own creative energy- the symbols you find meaningful and want to incorporate, the gods that you want to represent, the visions that come to you during meditation, the care you want to bring to your altar and your rituals- shine through where it matters. And if that means buying ten bars of Irish Spring from costco in order to learn how to carve soap poppets, so be it. I believe it will give you something, even if that’s only the confidence to achieve you get what you set out to do.
Blessings!
Tips, if you like this post or my blog!

Why Dental Health Experts Say Invisalign is Better than SmileDirectClub
Our thoughts on popular teeth straightening techniques.
Tumblr media
If you’re considering orthodontic treatment for yourself or your children, it can be tempting to go for the cheapest option– online mail-order aligners.
These appliances provide an alternative to state-of-the-art Invisalign treatment and cost less because the direct-to-consumer process minimises involvement by a dentist.
For instance, SmileDirectClub (SDC) charges just under £1,500 for its aligners, while Invisalign orthodontics can cost £3,250 to over £4,250 and is highly unlikely to be available on the NHS.
Critics of the SDC system say orthodontics is a combination of science and art requiring expert clinical attention from a dentist in person. However, SmileDirectClub claims dentists are misleading the public to keep the cost of orthodontic therapy artificially high.
So, let’s look in a little more depth at how the SmileDirectClub and Invisalign solutions work and why dental health experts insist that Invisalign is the better option.
How Does Invisalign Work?
Tumblr media
A popular alternative to fixed metal braces, Invisalign hi-techcustom-crafted aligners can address multiple simple and more complex orthodontic problems, including crowded, crookedand gapped teeth, and bite irregularities.
Dental professionals use a special 3D digital scanner and virtual modelling software that produces a series of clear plastic aligner trays, with each set being worn 20 to 22 hours a day for one to two weeks.
Treatment progress is monitored by regular visits to your dentist.
How Does SmileDirectClub Work?
SmileDirectClub customers get a kit to take an impression of their teeth at home, or they can get a 3D scan in a SmileShop.
The bite cast is then reviewed online by a dentist and a series of customised 3D-printed plastic aligners is delivered by post – one set each month for about five months, to be worn at least 10 hours a night.
The system is designed for minor teeth straightening – not re-positioning teeth or improving bite function.
Tumblr media
SDC says patients are guided throughout the whole process, and that in complex cases they will be advised to see a dentist directly.
The American Connection
A leading player in direct-to-consumer orthodontics, SmileDirectClub was founded in 2014 in the USA, in Nashville, Tennessee. It expanded its operations to the UK in 2019, having provided mail-order aligners for more than 650,000 American adults and children aged 12-plus.
As the company originated in the USA, it makes sense to see what dental health experts in America are saying about it.
The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) issued a consumer alert about mail-order orthodontic businesses like SmileDirectClub, saying that DIY dental treatment can result in lasting damage.
The country’s biggest dental organisation, the American Dental Association (ADA), also proclaimed a formal resolution against do-it-yourself orthodontics, warning of the potential harm to patients.
Orthodontist and author Richard Schechtman has also criticised mail-order orthodontics. Writing for HuffPost in 2015, he said DIY orthodontic treatment risked permanent damage to teeth.
SmileDirectClub – which disputes that its aligners are a “do-it-yourself” treatment – has taken legal action against orthodontists and other dentists in the US over “disparaging and false comments” about its mail-order aligners.
SmileDirectClub and Align Technology
In 2016, the USA-based global medical appliance company that makes Invisalign aligners – Align Technology – bought nearly 20 per cent of SmileDirectClub and now makes other types of aligners for SDC.
The connection between the businesses came under the spotlight on the DentistryIQ platform for dental professionals in 2017 when Chris Salierno, chief editor of Dental Economics Magazine and a Doctor of Dental Surgery, referred to concerns of dentists about “DIY dentistry”.
What Are UK Dentists Saying About Internet Dentistry?
Tumblr media
The British Dental Association (BDA), the professional organisation representing more than 20,000 UK dentists, has warned against the SmileDirectClub type of online dentistry, stressing that a face-to-face consultation is crucial if you’re thinking about having orthodontic treatment.
The BDA says a dentist with orthodontic training and experience can advise you on the different types of orthodontic appliances available and their advantages and risks.
BDA vice-chairman Eddie Crouch told The Daily Mail that an experienced clinician was essential for orthodontic treatment to be monitored properly and ensure any problems were fixed. If treatment wasn’t supervised over time, there was a risk of “permanent damage to dental health”.
SmileDirectClub Vs Invisalign
SmileDirectClub says it broadens access to safe, affordable and convenient teeth-straightening through dentist-directed remote orthodontic therapy.
The company says customers can consult with a dentist remotely to check on how their aligners are working, and a 24-hour call centre is available in the event of urgent issues.
The main concern of dental health experts about teledentistry systems like SmileDirectClub is the lack of face-to-face interaction with a dental professional.
If a quick fix of minor orthodontic issues at a low cost is the only factor, SmileDirectClub may be right for you.
However, you may come to the same conclusion as dental health experts in the US and UK that Invisalign is better than SmileDirectClub if you’re more focused on:
The benefits of individual attention from a dentist experienced in orthodontics.
Making sure your straightened teeth will give you a functional bite.
Getting help to keep your new smile after treatment.
Considering a wholistic approach which gives you whiter teeth as well as straighter teeth with tooth whitening or composite bonding.
A personal Invisalign trained dentist or Orthodontist will consider your dental history and be able to discuss any concerns you might have before and during treatment.
Your regular visits during treatment will also allow your dentist to assess your progress and tweak your treatment plan if necessary.
YYour invisalign trained dentist or orthodontist can also help you with post-treatment options, such as composite bonding, veneers or tooth whitening as straightening your teeth should be part of a wholistic plan to improve your smile. They can also advise you on how to maintain your smile after orthodontic therapy through preventive dentistry such as regular check-ups and professional cleanings.

The Right Way to Set Up a Reward System for Kids
If you want to help your child to reach behavioral milestones (and tame a few tantrums on the way), you can try a tactic that many parents swear by: reward systems. They encourage behavioral modification through positive reinforcement.
“Stressing positive behavior helps build self-esteem," says Katarzyna Bisaga, M.D., Ph.D., a child and adolescent psychiatrist and assistant clinical professor in Columbia University's Division of Child Psychiatry in New York City. "The thinking is that once a child develops one positive behavior and gets a lot of praise, then he'll be more likely to cooperate in other situations too."
Here’s an example of how it works: When Dr. Bisaga’s son Marcin was 7 years old, she struggled to get him ready for school in the morning. Rather than dwelling on the negative aspects of his foot-dragging, she stressed the positives, made her expectations clear, and implemented a point reward system for kids.
"In the morning Marcin got points for getting dressed by a certain time, brushing his teeth, and eating his breakfast," she says. "When he came home from school, there were points for putting his coat and shoes away and for washing his hands. At night there were points for taking a bath and brushing his teeth." At the end of the week, the results were tallied and he earned 10 cents for every three points. Marcin would look forward to buying trading cards and small toys with his loot.
Want to implement a similar reward system in your house? The key is customizing it based on your child’s age, personality, and interests. Here’s how to set up a reward system that works for your kid.
Creating Reward Systems for Toddlers and Preschoolers
For little kids, consider using a sticker reward chart. The instructions are simple: Put one sticker on the chart each time your child accomplishes a goal. Some parents also give out rewards for certain milestones. (For example, she can get one sticker each time she dresses herself. Ten stickers earns a small toy or new book). Printable reward charts are readily available online, and you can also make your own DIY version.
Also note that you don’t need to work with stickers. Reward charts can take many forms: dimes in a jar, magnets on the fridge, child-friendly apps, tallied points—anything that’ll motivate your child to behave accordingly! Just remember that most little kids do best with a bit of visual representation.
Here are some tips for using a reward chart for toddlers and preschoolers.
Reward your toddler or preschooler right away. To eliminate confusion, stickers should be given immediately after the desired behavior occurs, says Dr. Bisaga. Otherwise your kid might forget what they’re being rewarded for.
Track only one behavior. When you first start a reward system, only track one behavior at a time. Your toddler or preschooler can get stickers for using the toilet, getting dressed, saying “thank you,” not whining, etc. Once a specific behavior is no longer a problem, Dr. Bisaga says you can target another, always making sure your goals are realistic and age-appropriate.
Give plenty of praise. Toddlers and preschoolers love pleasing their parents. Give your child lots of praise when she accomplishes a goal, and she’ll be encouraged to keep up the good work. Also remind her about the reward chart often (“Remember if you go potty on the toilet, you’ll get a sticker!”)
Use simple wording. With toddlers and preschoolers, you need to speak with easy-to-understand terms. Instead of rewarding your child for “showing gratitude for acts of service,” you’re rewarding her for “saying ‘please’ and ‘thank you.’”
Don’t bribe. Even if you’re desperate to get your child to behave in public, you shouldn’t use a reward system as a bribe. Your child might start acting out on purpose, knowing that a reward awaits when she stops.
Creating Reward Systems for Kids at Home
For school-aged kids, a reward system usually deals with points instead of stickers. But tracking points alone won’t motivate them to change their behavior, so parents need to encourage them with larger incentives. For example, kids can trade in 20 points for a trip to the playground, a later bedtime, an extra half hour of video games, or small amounts of money. Remember the tactic of Dr. Bisaga, who gave her son 10 cents for every three points earned (which he subsequently spent on small toys!) Here are some tips for success with a point reward system for kids.
Track multiple behaviors. As your kids age, you can implement more items in the reward chart. Your child might earn points for making his bed, controlling his anger, helping with laundry, walking the dog, and being nice to siblings.
Consider removing points. Parents can decide on the dynamics of their chart, but some choose to remove points for bad behavior. If this happens, clearly explain the reasoning to your child.
Add time sensitivity. Does your kid have a knack for procrastination? Then add a time sensitivity element to your reward system! Maybe your kid must make his bed before 10 a.m. to receive points, or he needs to complete all chores before dinner.
Get your kids involved. Talk to your child to brainstorm accessible rewards that will motivate him. He might not care about getting a new book if he already has shelves full of unread ones—but maybe he’s longing for a family bike ride to the new ice cream shop!
Don’t stray from the system. Reward charts clearly state what is expected of your child, but they only work as long as you keep at it. "Even simple star charts require a lot of energy, effort, and time," says Dr. Bisaga. "You need to be on top of your kids and monitor what they're doing and how they're doing it." Rewarding toys is also one of the ways. The following toys are recommended.
