KalopsiaShipping is the rare pairing of Toren and Guzma. I had been a fan of it since I've seen someone post them here on Tumblr! A friend ( @kr1ssalis ) and me are avid fans of the pair as well. This ship will be seen and referenced quite often on here, so that's why I feel the need to include it.

hypothetical comic where calvin goes to therapy for being a bisexual disaster among other things.

so like. i deliberately don’t say one way or the other where on the platonic-romantic spectrum ed and cal fall on because of a lot of reasons but mostly just because i think the tension and ambiguity is 1. most interesting/funniest and 2. most accessible for multiple readers who want some room to imagine, particularly because being aroacespec i get that romance repulsion Happens sometimes. It happens for me occasionally so I don’t want to lock anything in stone, at least for the main duo the story centres around.

that said i do have a whole hypothetical mental image of “if it was a romo/sexual relationship, this is how the characters would theoretically react over this range of time/historically.” because I love hypotheticals that don’t have to be “canon” and because I am interested in queer history as a queer person myself, especially in this province where... well. if you know you know.

Now that i am getting paid real money to actually research queer history locally? I think about it way more.

on to the hypotheticals if you are interested...

- i think calvin would have had an awareness of his slightly-fluid sexuality at the very least from the 70s on, especially because sexuality was such a huge part of white collar oil man culture in some of the worst most misogynistic ways but also for other reasons. I think he definitely would have started questioning what was “normal” and “acceptable” at that time, but I think he learned very quickly not to ask too many questions. He did grow up on Bible Bill’s radio show in the 30s, which set this tone of repression, eugenics, and hostility that we are still reeling from.

- his victorian upbringing combined with this 1930s ethos plus all the nostalgic romanticism built up in the 1910s is the emotional soup that makes calvin hallucinate that he’s actually a normal person who CAN have the job and the wife and the white picket fence and 1.5 kids occasionally. He tries not to overthink it most of the time.

- i expect this conversation didn’t take place until the 2010s. despite calvin’s cushy workplace benefits i think mental health, therapy, etc. especially for someone in such a traditional conservative environment was just not considered even if it was available earlier. and talking about sexuality? forgetaboutit. that said, I think calvin is more progressive than we give him credit for sometimes and I actually think he would be most likely out of any of them to seek this kind of stuff out

- likewise i think after his falling out with ed he does a bad job of patching things up, but once he puts his mind to using his knowledge and skills of being a people person and being genuinely interested and excited about organizations in his city, he figures out how to talk about it with people in his own way. i think when people think about queer history they tend to think of the bar/club scene and it’s more than that, especially after certain events in canadian, american and international queer communities. so by the time he goes looking, there are already resources that have been operating for decades! I don’t know much about the specifics of calgary queer history (yet) but i know that these things absolutely exist to this day.

- eventually some therapists have to learn to work with immortals which they definitely did not cover in their certification.

I've poked around and apparently it's actually up for debate! So, formally: it's messy on which way to go. If you want to leave it at that, you can. But as an aroace agender person, I want to share my opinion under the cut

Mandatory disclaimer because this is the pissing on the poor website: I speak for myself and nobody else. Maybe other agenderspec people have different experiences, maybe other acespec or arospec people have different experiences! But I feel emotions and have opinions so I'm sharing my opinions that have formed in part due to my emotions.

I'm gonna be real, I don't feel like I'm part of the queer community. I feel queer but folks don't think of me. Love is love until you don't feel love, yaknow? But I feel VERY aspec. It's a community united by a LACK of something. And excluding agender feels unfair to that part of me? I'm a triple A battery and I'm aspec. After all, you can say aroacespec. That's on the table. But when you simplify it down to "aspec" to me it reads as "on a spectrum that begins with the prefix a-" and the prefix a- is defined in part by being excluded from clubs. We don't feel sexual attraction or romantic attraction and we don't feel gender. If agender is kept out of the community defined by absence, where else can we go? And for that matter, aroace has a fucking flag! Acespec has a fucking flag! Arospec has a fucking flag! Aroacespec has a flag! Let me into the club! Let this flag be for everyone who's kicked to the curb for not partaking in the entire array of the allos' shenanigans!

I'm not really a clubbing person especially because of how….allo the entire thing can be. Like I'm not really interested in strangers touching me, though it can be flattering when someone is respectful and interested, I just can't reciprocate if I don't know them- not without being slightly repulsed. Also the noise is annoying. But also I really want to go to this queer club in my city to get to know other queer people!!!!! I want to feel like I belong!!!!!!!! But I have no one who can go there with me and it's really not safe for me to just wander around at night where I live so guess I won't be going:((

genuine q, NOT trying to be invalidating at all, but how do ace/aro people fit into the queer community? I get that it's a diff way of experiencing sexuality, but a person only attracted to people of the opposite gender romantically, yet are ace, wouldn't be queer? obviously that's one specific example, and queer romantic people are queer, but also with aro/ace people I genuinely don't understand it as being queer? like isnt there a difference between a complicated relationship with sexuality (or not being sexual to any extent) and being queer? either way I respect it as it's not my experiance, just confused and want to understand more :)

the simple answer - we're not straight (either with regards to sexual or romantic orientations. Not trying to erase the straight aroallos or alloaces! y'all are valid!) and so are an orientation minority. Queer is an umbrella term that encompasses those minorities, therefore aro/acespec people fall under the queer umbrella.

the slightly longer answer - Queer is a term used/reclaimed by the queer community to be inclusive. It's less about not being straight and more about experiencing sexuality/gender differently from the 'norm'. GNC allocishet people can be considered queer - it's about being a community and supporting each other when general society makes us outcasts, not an elite club where you only get in if you've got a certain label. Aro/ace people will always experience sex/romance differently from the general allo population, and even if they are romantically or sexually attracted to the opposite gender, they will be likely be alienated and impacted in society by their aro/aceness. They will be affected by amatonormativity and allonormativity and heteronormativity in the same way that, say, a lesbian would. And that difference of experience, that exclusion, is what makes us queer.

Of course, I don't speak for all aroacespec people. Identifying as queer is still a personal choice and not every aro/ace person will, and that's absolutely ok. But if they choose to, aro and ace people always have and always will belong in the queer community.
