Swipe ➡️ for video! 💥💁🏽‍♀️ In honor of #filipinoamericanhistorymonth, here’s something that’s been so close to my heart for over a decade: Eskrima/Kali/Arnis, otherwise known as Filipino Martial Arts! 🇵🇭⚔️💥 Honored to have represented @ladocepares at, not one but two(!), demonstrations this month at City Hall. As much as it’s been an honor to be the first female black belt for LADP, I am so much more honored to consider this group my second family, from everyone who’s been there for loud, awkward, annoying pre-teen Aubrey to maybe slightly less those things, and more grown up Aubrey 😜, and everyone who I’ve met since coming back after completing my Master’s. 💙 If y’all are interested in learning more about #filipinomartialarts, and its long and rich history, please hit us up! You know where to find me ☺️ . . . #fahm #pahm #pilipinoamericanhistorymonth #eskrima #kali #arnis #fma #docepares #filipinomartialarts #martialarts #sticktraining #arnisador #eskrimador (at Los Angeles City Hall) https://www.instagram.com/p/B3sg2UeAWIt/?igshid=1i4akgp2ejf2c

A little clip of the beginning of an empty hand sayaw (form) I came up with over the long weekend. A sayaw or form is a great way to train when you have no partner to practice with. Many of the benefits found in practicing a sayaw include: • Practicing gross movement patterns found in your style • Training proper biomechanics • Reinforcing technique application • Visualization • Balance • Meditative • Low impact training I find it best when you go at it with a certain intention whether it's to find errors in your movement, exploring the way your body moves, or using it to relax. Whatever it is, make sure you maintain that intention throughout. #kali #arnis #eskrima #kuntaw #filipinomartialarts #fma #eskrimador #arnisador #martialarts #selfdefense #trainwithintent

Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Ephesians 6:13 (NIV)
This year, my classmates, Jessa and Joyce introduced me to the sport/self-defense called Arnis (National Game of the Philippines), which they were part of the varsity team in Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Muntinlupa. My only intention was to be included in their upcoming tournament in Baguio City, Philippines, where some of my love ones live.
Regardless of seeing my classmates go to school with bruises and body aches. I trained hard just to be included in the said tournament. When we went to the part called Sparring or full-contact… I saw the protective gear and remembered that I am a soldier in the army of the LORD.
Tumblr media
In the game, we wore armor but in our Spiritual lives, we must also wear armor. We also need protection in life so we can take our stand against the devil schemes. (v11) “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the power of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” (v12)
This is our ARMOR: • Belt of Truth – We must know the TRUTH by taking our daily spiritual food. • Breastplate of Righteousness – If we chose to be holy or do what God told us to do, Satan can’t have a chance to hurt us. • Feet fitted with the Gospel of Peace – Our enemy has the power to create worries and confusion in our lives but because we have Jesus, we have peace. • Shield of Faith – Doubts! They can never win if we have faith, right? • Helmet of Salvation – We will win against the enemy if we have salvation. • Sword of the Spirit – God’s Word is our powerful weapon against Satan.
NO ARNIS PLAYER CAN GO FULL CONTACT WITHOUT PROPER EQUIPMENT.
So as God’s soldier, let us wear the ARMOR OF GOD daily. To continue my story awhile ago, I got the opportunity to be included in the tournament. We, Team PLMun/Muntinlupa, played for the #TeamARMY which are real soldiers of the Philippines. I also got the chance to see Tita Mariane and Belleching there. Thank You, Lord for such wonderful experience!

“[Interviewer:] Dean Stockwell became involved in Arnis mainly for the movie Pacific Connection. Did Dean continue his training after the movie?
[Roland Dantes:] Yes, Dean and I worked together on that movie project, Professor Presas was selected as the technical consultant for the fight scenes and additionally trained Dean Stockwell, Guy Madison and Alehandro Reyes in the Philippine Martial Arts. Dean got so enthused with Arnis that his training embraced the complete Modern Arnis curriculum. Dean studied long and hard at Arnis. Several years after the movie when I came to the United States I met with Dean and he had a group of Arnisadors all training at his home in the Hollywood Hills. I believe it was 1981 in Topanga Canyon. Dean shared his knowledge with quite a few other actors including Jack Nicholson whom he was close friends with. Dean was filming a TV series or movie he wasn’t shy, he was very dedicated to Arnis and let it be known that he loved the art.”

Home Escrima Practice
I’m proud to be Filipino and a practitioner of arnis. I can call myself an arnisador now because I’ve become so engrossed with the discipline. Every day, I make time to practice stick fighting drills. It might be repetitive but every bit of it is worth it only because I know I’m gaining things as I go along.
Working on my strikes, I also managed to develop my critical thinking skills in the process. That is in fighting I don’t panic anymore and, instead, think before I strike about what will happen next. So I can say that I’ve trained my mind to not only respond better but have an improved way to initiate attacks. That there are calculations happening even an encounter begins. But this isn’t to say that I’m working with a partner when I practice. I do it alone so I simulate working with a stranger.
For my motivation, survival is what drives me. Of course, there’s the element of fear that comes into play with these things. Self-defense, I believe, was borne out of the desire to stay alert and the tendency to be protective. I embrace it and take courage. Thus I exercise the basics and advanced techniques daily.

Everyone experiences periods of having high motivation and low motivation when they exercise. A lot of times you can't control that. • What you do have control over is how you deal with that. • For me when I'm highly motivated, I'm pretty much game for just about anything- Olympic lifting, kettlebell sport, 5x5, Intervals, etc. • Which is why on days like this I will purposely adjust my planned workout for the day and make it more challenging. It may be physically hard, but I know, mentally, I can push through it. • On days I have low motivation, that's a different story. If it coincides with a scheduled day off, perfect! Nothing to worry about. • If it coincides with a workout day, that's when I choose movements that are a no brainer for me and that I truly enjoy no matter how I feel. I like to call these my anchor exercises because they prevent me from drifting off into no-workout land. • And for me it's either a barbell clean or kettlebell swing. • Sometimes those one or two movements is all I'll do and I'm fine with that. And sometimes doing those movements actually help to increase my motivation to workout. • If that happens then BOOM. I'll do the workout I originally had planned. • For days when it's neither high nor low motivation, I adjust nothing about my planned workout and just do as intended. • You can apply this to just about anything you do- learning a new skill, reading a book, martial arts, etc. • Just go ahead and try it out. What have you got to lose? #tuesdaytip #fitnesstips #fitness #fmafitness #martialartsfitness #athomeworkout #workoutathome #planforsuccess #personaltrainer #arnisador #eskrimador #fittofight
