Just realised that today is the anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, committed by the Ottoman Turks during World War I (1914- 1918). Around 1.5 million Armenians faced expulsion or mass murder at the hands of this Empire, whose brutality still isn’t given as much scrutiny or criticism compared to historic Western Empires. I don’t know much about Armenia, but from my short research it appears that hatred of Christians, as well as politics, was the motivation for this unthinkable crime. While the Turkish government continues to deny the Armenian genocide and penalise anyone who confirms the truth, we should stand with the Armenian people and say “Never Again”.

NEW MAP: Europe 54: Iberian–Armenian War (15 Jan 54 AD) https://buff.ly/2MwwPp3 Exploiting Parthian instability, Rhadamistus of Iberia invaded Armenia in 50 AD and executed the king, even though both were Roman allies. Although Rome accepted Rhadamistus’ power grab, Parthia—by now under the firm rule of Vologases I (51–78)—did not and in 52 AD marched into Armenia with their own claimant, Vologases’ brother Tiridates. However, the expedition was crippled by winter and disease, forcing Tiridates to withdraw the following year. #europe #history #welovehistory #map #ancienthistory #classicalhistory #armenianhistory #europeanhistory #january #january15 #kushanempire #margiana #parthia #parthianempire #romanempire #romans #roman #ancientrome #romanhistory #maps #newmap #historyteacher #historybuff #historygeek #historynerd #worldhistory #cartography #geopolitics (at Artashat, Armenia) https://www.instagram.com/p/B1eq9S8AQeV/?igshid=85n33v01mjud

A question for Mod Araxi! Do you know of any Armenian blogs worth following?
Yes I do! My personal favorites are:
@soultranquilbluntz - not really a blog about Armenia but run by a lovely Armenian with lots of Armenia content
@sariaghjik - again not 100% about Armenia but a lot of good content, lots about the genocide
@armeniangenocidehistory - pretty self-explanatory
@artist-sarian - not about Armenia but an Armenian painter with many beautiful paintings of Armenia
@vartanm - lots of Armenia stuff but some of it is in Armenian so if you can’t read the alphabet or don’t know the language some of it might be pretty useless to you
@shakarlicious - another one not about Armenia but run by an Armenian with good posts about Armenia, although they are a bit sparse
@vicalbert - more non-Armenian centered blogs run by Armenians, with good Armenia content but also a lot of fandom stuff so if you wish to avoid that probably not this one
@artaxata - a REALLY good one with a whole page dedicated to Armenia and also mythology (Armenian and non-Armenian) if you’re into that
@armenianhistory - again pretty self-explanatory
@armenianhighland - about all aspects of Armenia, lots of really good original content so go support them!
@armenian-problems-blog - not anything of substance but I think it’s funny so I'm putting it here
@luvarmenia - pretty pictures of Armenia
These aren’t in any particular order, I just typed them as they came to mind so check out all of them!
you can also check out this thread if you’re looking to follow other Armenian people
Also if you see this and you have an Armenia blog tell me and I’ll add you to the list!

Armenian History notes. After being sick all weekend with a terrible cold that left me flat in bed for 3 days I was only able to do an hour's worth of studying today for my test next Thurs. Fortunately I had already started studying last week before I got sick. Not to mention I'm horribly behind in reading in all my other classes. I'm trying not to stress out and give my body plenty of time to rest.

I Great Lion Mher, with his noble pride, For forty long years ruled Sassoon far and wide, His rule was so awesome that in his day, Across Sassoon's peaks even birds feared to stray, Far from the highlands where Sassoon was found, His dreaded fame spread with a thunderous sound, And praise for the high deeds of Lion Mher, On thousands of lips, in one voice, filled the air. II He ruled in Sassoon with lionly might, The prince of the highlands, unchallenged in right, For forty long years he ruled without foe, And in forty long years he knew not one woe, But now as old age upon him descended, This valiant man's heart a pang apprehended, Which prompted the aging grand hero to ponder: "My life's autumn days will soon take me yonder, The captive of earth and its black sandy cloak, The fame of Mher shall vanish like smoke, And my name, and my might, and my glory shall pass, In my orphaned and leaderless realm shall amass, Thousands of bandits and fiends on the make, No heir have I left, no successor to take, My sword in his hand for Sassoon's protection," So thought the great prince in pensive dejection. III Then one day, as he thought, his grey eyebrows knit tight, An angel from heaven, in fiery light, Came to the prince, feet fixed on a cloud, Bringing a message, proclaiming aloud: "Greetings! your highness, O Sassoon's great lord, Your voice to God's throne in high heaven has soared, And soon shall he grant you the heir that you seek, Heed me well, though, prince Mher, great king of this peak, On the day that the Lord gives effect to your prayer, Neither you nor your wife shall he suffer to spare." "May God's will be done," said Mher without sigh, "Death is our lot; all mortals must die. But when in this world we've a child in our stead, Through our child we live, although we be dead." And then in a flash, the Angel took flight, And nine months and nine hours from that joyous sight, To Lion Mher a child was born, And he called his cub David. On that happy morn, He summoned his brother Ohan of Great Voice, And his realm he bequeathed, no time to rejoice, To his brother Ohan and his newly born son. #ArmenianGenocide #Armenianhistory

NEW MAP: Europe 1826: Russo-Persian War of 1826–28 (14 Sep 1826) https://buff.ly/2UuCTBT In 1826 Russian troops encroached on Persian territory in Armenia, disregarding the direct orders of the Tsar—who was focused on the Greek revolution against the Ottoman Empire—not to provoke Persia. The Persians responded by invading the Russian Caucasus, inciting uprisings among local rulers and tribes. Despite initial setbacks, Russia eventually gained the upper hand and in 1828 forced Persia to cede its Armenian territories. #europe #history #welovemaps #map #1820s #1826 #newmap #welovehistory #armenianhistory #russianhistory #iranianhistory #persianhistory #persia #europeanhistory #russianempire #persianempire #greekrevolution #greekindependence #caucasus #september #september14 #ottomanempire #maps #historyteacher #historybuff #historygeek #historynerd #worldhistory #middleeast #southwestasia (at Yerevan, Armenia) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bv2JhweA_3f/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1rebwa2m2csx4
