Reasons to Love Armagh, the small county famous for its association with the world's most famous saint, Saint Patrick, is also home to some fine landscapes, architecture and natural beauty.

#OTD in 1014 – Battle of Clontarf | The Dublin Norse and the king of Leinster, with Viking allies from overseas, are defeated by Brian Boru’s army at Clontarf.
The bounds between Irish Legend and Irish Myth has often been blurred, especially as the retelling of heroic deeds has been passed on through generations. Brian Boru was no legend although his life deeds were legendary. He was very much a real man and was in fact the last great High King of Ireland and perhaps the greatest military leader the country has ever known. Brian Boru was born Brian Mac…

The Pyrocene Era
In a million years, when some other species
looks back upon ours through the lens of
archaeology, using whatever advanced tools
at their disposal, they will track the origin of
our extinction to this time in history between
the last age of verdant abundance and that
which is dawning upon us: the age of fire
when we heated our planet to such a degree
that it started catching fire regularly much as
it used to snow in season or how we once
found rainbows in profusion after a summer
rain but soon replaced these with extremes
of soaking mega-storms followed by baking
nightmares of scorched-earth heat-waves
resulting in arid deserts where once sprouted
fields, barren peaks that once cradled glaciers,
and wastelands of charcoal where once grew
dense forests filled with a diversity of fauna
and flora, a decimation of necessary insects,
a contamination of the atmosphere, a noxious
bombardment of once-filtered solar radiation
and they will never find the smoking gun or
the dropped cigarette that lit the final inferno
because it was an evolutionary amalgamation
of neglect, greed, ignorance, and error over a
millennium of unchecked technological excess
that looked strikingly like progress but in truth
was a wholly preventable, methodical suicide.

"Abortive Attempt To Blow Up Armagh City War Memorial," Kingston Whig-Standard. May 7, 1934. Page 9. --- Attributed to Members of Irish Republican Army From Free State ---- ARMAGH, Northern Ireland, May 7 - (CP Cable) - An abortive attempt early today to blow up the Armagh city war memorial was attributed to members of the "Irish Republican Army" who motored from the Irish Free State and sped back across the frontier after cutting telephone lines leading to the Free State.
It was recalled the Government of Ulster recently banned erection of a memorial at Carrichmore, Tyrone, to Irish Republican Army men who were killed in the uprising of 1916.
Armagh's citizenry were awakened by the explosion caused when one of two land-mines brought by the raiders exploded and partially wrecked the steps of the memorial. But the other failed to explode and the bronze figure of Peace was undamaged.
The bombers took the precaution while on the way to Armagh to waken a doctor and force him to stand by in case of injury to one of their number. As police and inhabitants rushed from their homes the invaders drove off with the doctor, dropping him at the Free State border.

Property spotlight: Cathedral views
Property spotlight: Cathedral views
Cities are fascinating entities – at least they are here in Britain. Throughout history, cities have come about due to a number of different factors; population size, status granted by a ruling monarch or if the place has a diocesan cathedral – to name just three reasons. This week, we’ve chosen ‘city’ properties enjoying cathedral views that are on the market, one from each of the four home…

The Viking Age in Ireland
The exact reasons for Vikings venturing out from their homeland are uncertain; some have suggested it was due to overpopulation of their homeland, but the earliest Vikings were looking for riches, not land. Vikings also settled in Scotland and, like Ireland, started to settle with the local population. In Scotland these people became known as The Gallowglasses and would later arrive in Ireland as…

I didn’t even know there was a prison in Armagh.
Not until today.
Yes I know it was shut down in 1984.
Hence why I said “was”.
