FansHobby MB-26 The Saber Team

I don't talk about it here, but I've actually been buying a lot of Transformers lately. I've been doing mini-reviews of them and a few other things over on the Twibblies for a bit now on Sundays. Let me know if you'd be interested in my doing mini-reviews, because if there's no interest, I'm probably not going to do it.

But I have also gotten a few bigger Transformers and adjacent toys that I plan on doing full reviews of (such as this one and eventually the depicted TFLE Armada Optimus).

The Good: I had the old Star Saber set as a kid, and these guys definitely feel like improved versions of those designs. A lot more posability, they hold together as a sword better, and they're 5mm compatible, so any toy (like official Transformers) that uses that hand size can wield it.

And that packaging is a great cherry on top. So cute '_')b

The Bad: These guys use a lot of translucent plastic, and there are places where I'm worried about eventual breakages. I get they use it because the originals did, but I would have preferred solid plastic.

For how well most of the Star Saber comes together, it's a bit of a letdown that not-Sonar (the shuttle) has loose legs as the handle. It would have been nice if they locked somewhere.

Lastly, while the Saber Team have the old style of Minicon ports so they can interact with both the original Armada toys and FansHobby's recreations, it would have been nice if they came with some sort of adapter to make them 5mm compatible so you can attach them to the modern Legacy Armada toys.

Overall, it's a good, fun set, even if Legacy Armada Optimus' hands have that thing that prevent it from properly holding the handle. I have a few minor qualms, but they're cheap enough (when it comes to fan-made toys) that they're easily overlooked. I really like Minicons, so if FansHobby does any more Minicon sets, especially the combining ones, I'll probably pick them up, too.

Some Chinese trading cards based on TFONE came out, and they show off models of two of the other ancient Primes.

Spoilers obviously.

The movie shows us all 13, but because of the nature of the story we don’t really get a good look at any of them besides Alpha Trion.

These cards show off the designs of Quintus Prime and Micronus Prime.

Quintus takes heavy cues from his Aligned design.

But simplifies it greatly and pushes the design into a clearer Hindu god like direction.

I like to think he sounds like Apu and, per a friend’s idea, did this to the Quintessons:

Because all the Primes had Cogs, they all can Transform (which runs counter to Aligned’s idea of Amalgamous Prime being the first one to Transform and pass down the Cog, but then Aligned contradicts this with Nexus Prime being able to Transform also, so…), but into what we don’t know. Once more Quintus eludes us into what he turns into, though this design has notable wings, so maaaaybe he turns into a jet? At this version looks capable of Transforming, vs his Aligned & EarthSpark designs.

I still kinda prefer the monk design of EarthSpark Quintus, and I still like to think he Transforms into a G1 style Quint ship.

But I’m hazarding a guess the upcoming Age of Primes toy line will probably use the TFONE design as a basis, so maybe we’ll finally learn what he turns into.

The TFONE Quints do loosely resemble Quintus, so maybe this toy is already a hint at what Quintus Transforms into.

Micronus meanwhile looks like this.

He looks like a hybrid of the RiD15 Micronus and ROTB Rhinox.

I like that they kept the RiD15 body type, as I prefer Micronus being a squat, bulky guy like Hey Arnold’s Ernie Potts vs the hard to read skinny design they had for Aligned originally.

Still don’t know what Micronus turns into in TFONE, though the RiD15 design implies he’s a Buzzsaw like Jetstorm and Slipstream.

Funny enough, like how the movie never clarifies if the Quintessons were created by Quintus Prime, Mini-Cons, Micronus’ descendants in modern media, are never referenced as existing on TFONE Cybertron. The Miners are tiny until they get their Cogs, but they’re not supposed to be Mini-Cons, so. -shrugs- Modern media also says the Mini-Cons are native to Cybertron’s moons, a nod to their original creator, Unicron, being disguised as Cybertron’s moon in Armada; so maybe the TFONE Mini-Cons are up there chilling on the Moons, lol.

The movie made the wise choice to keep things simpler for casual audiences, but the modern 13 Primes are themed around certain races, genders, powers, and technologies, and it feels like writers are never sure on what to do with them because of this. Onyx Prime still makes more sense as the main antagonist for RiD15 because of the emphasis on animal type Decepticons, but they used The Fallen for rule of cool and marketable reasons. I feel like Cyberverse could’ve had Vector Prime as a central character due to the show’s habit of flashbacks and time skips over Alchemist/Maccadam, and Quintus Prime to better tie things to the Quintessons. I feel like Liege Maximo would’ve worked well in Cyberverse too but I don’t know what he’d DO either…

Still now that we have a better look at the TFONE Primes, they look cool, and I want to talk about the other designs once we get proper character models, so stay tuned for that.

My current guess now, until we get toys that say otherwise, is the upcoming Primes toys might use TFONE’s designs as a basis, as the intent was to use TFONE as the new backstory anyway. I suspect aspects of Cyberverse and EarthSpark might influence things though, as those who got a good look at TFONE Alchemist say he takes most of his look from Cyberverse Alchemist Prime.

So hopefully we don’t have much longer to see toy wise.

I think mini-cons can have sparklings? They're just very discreet/protective about them. The ones that accompany Star like to spoil the little ones and, if I remember correctly, one of them has a name similar to jetstorm(It would be hilarious if the seeker, in the dramatic style only he can provide, chose the name as a tribute )

I'm not sure about Armada starop, but I think a fic in that style

In the Armada continuity, Mini-Cons are a race of small, almost human-sized Cybertronians capable of linking (or Powerlinxing) with larger Cybertronians to impart extra abilities or greatly increase their strength. While the Autobots treat the Mini-Cons like equals, the Decepticons rule over them through fear.  Most of the bots have one or two mini-cons, though there are three teams of various number that make up super powerful weapons that both factions are fighting for: the Star Saber, the Requiem Blaster, and the Skyboom Shield.  Starscream has a total of four, but three of them combine into the Star Saber.  First is Swindle, who boosts the power of Starscream’s Null Ray Canons immensely, and was the first Mini-Con Star bonded with. Then came the Air Defense Team, which are Runway, Sonar, and Jetstorm.  Star ends up getting really attached to them all, protecting them with his life, even if he pretends like he didn’t mean it that way.

hi! I really love your stories and ideas I’ve fallen in love with your ideas on the bots and cons and I have about two different things I wanna maybe set out here that I really thought was funny or could be funny.

The blind starscream au. I wear glasses myself and without them I fumble around a lot so reading that Optimus just has a battle jug of water to throw at the seeker like he’s a giant angry cat made me laugh a lot. I really liked that. You put the image of prime carrying a large spray bottle and just spraying the seeker.

For the Unicron is Optimus’s dad au (I don’t know if you’ve ever seen transformers armada{in that world Unicron made a group of minicons to make the bots and cons fight each other}) a personal headcanon of mine is that the minicons that we’re the descendants of minicronus prime and Unicrons descendants came together into the race of minicons we know in RID15. And I got the thought of the minicons (particularly Jetstorm or whoever else you think[particularly because there was a minicon by the name of jetstorm in armada]) just knowing there brethren by name in this terrifying abnormal way. Jetstorm never knew the prime how did he know him by THAT name. I just think it would be funny for Unicron to just have an “oh sh-t” moment when he remembers one of his older groups of creations and then has to explain the large groups of minicons that just know the prime and refer to him like their kin. And this moment of realization that maybe. Maybe. Just MAYBE unicrons descendants are more numbered than everybody thought.

These are all EXCELLENT thoughts dear anon. I am slightly uncertain as to what exactly you are requesting here with this. However the concepts laid out are highly intriguing and I would not mind expanding on them if you would be willing to send in a slightly more specific ask.
