The biopic Punjab '95, about human rights campaigner Jaswant Singh Khalra, is entangled in a legal dispute with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The film, directed by Honey Trehan and produced by Ronnie Screwvala, has been subjected to many rounds of censorship, with the most recent round of requests raising serious issues about free expression and the portrayal of historical events. Originally, the CBFC wanted 85 edits from the movie. However, following a review by the Revising Committee, the number of required revisions has risen to approximately 120.

According to a new story in Mid-day, one of the most contentious demands is the renaming of the protagonist, who is now known as Jaswant Singh Khalra. The CBFC has advised that the character's name be changed to Sutlej, which refers to the river that connects Punjab. The filmmakers have strenuously opposed this alteration, claiming that Khalra is a cherished person in the Sikh community and that renaming him would be disrespectful to his legacy. They have stressed that the film's realism and power stem from its portrayal of Khalra's role in probing the disappearance and killing of Sikh youths during the Punjab insurgency.

In addition to the name modification, the CBFC has demanded that the film be retitled to remove all references to Punjab '95, the year Khalra disappeared. The board has voiced worry that the title may elicit strong emotions and influence public opinion.

Furthermore, the CBFC has sought the removal of a sequence involving the Gurbani, a sacred text in Sikhism. They have also directed the filmmakers to remove any mention of Punjab or the Tarn Taran region. References to Canada and the United Kingdom have been found improper and will be removed.

The producers of Punjab '95 have held a series of discussions with the CBFC to resolve these concerns. They claim that the film is based on true events and testimonials, and that the censorship requests are unreasonable and damage the film's credibility. The film's producers, Ronnie Screwvala and Honey Trehan, have expressed their dissatisfaction with the current censorship process. They have stressed the need of relaying the tale of Jaswant Singh Khalra and the human rights violations committed during the Punjab insurgency.

Set in the turbulent 1990s Amritsar, Punjab '95 follows Jaswant Singh Khalra, a seemingly regular bank clerk and human rights activist who lives a middle-class life with his librarian wife and two small children. His hopes for a peaceful life are dashed when he learns of his friend's mother, Bibi Gurpej,'s abduction. As Khalra dives deeper into the investigation, he discovers a terrible web of secrets, putting himself and his family in jeopardy.

Arjun Rampal is preparing to make his debut in the South after building a name for himself in Bollywood. Arjun's experience in the South cinema industry provided him with opportunities to develop and improve as an actor. Working alongside Balakrishna and director Anil Ravipudi left an indelible impression on Arjun, who liked the cross-pollination of talent in the Indian cinema industry. He discovered that South Indian filmmakers were dedicated to being true to their characters and delivering their stories honestly. In his opinion, this was an excellent time for entertainers to work in Indian cinema and experiment with different forms of filmmaking. "The world has gotten so small," he added, "and actors are working in various languages and globally." So, getting to encounter different types of working where you can stretch your limitations as an actor and gain new skill sets is vital." Makers of Jaswant Singh Khalra biopic move court after CBFC recommends 21 changes; hearing to be held on July 14

The CBFC planned to award the Diljit Dosanjh movie an A grade and also gave the producers a list of 21 changes that must be made after certification.

Many of RSVP Movies' films have the right tone and are excellent works of art. Jaswant Singh Khalra, one of the most significant films from the production company, is soon to be released and has been in the news for a number of reasons. Despite receiving an A rating, the biopic starring Diljit Dosanjh and Arjun Rampal has been asked to make over 20 cuts by the CBFC and has been certified as an Adult Only film. The makers then filed a lawsuit in court challenging the CBFC's ruling.

According to the most recent information regarding the movie, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) awarded the movie an A certificate because they felt that some parts of it were too fictionalised and dramatised. The removal of some dialogue, the movie's disclaimer, and its title are just a few of the approximately 21 changes that the makers have been advised to make in accordance with the CBFC report.

RSVP Movies by Ronnie Screwvala protested the cuts and changes recommended by the CBFC by filing an appeal with the Bombay High Court under Section 5C of the Cinematograph Act, claiming that the cuts violated Article 19(1)(a) of the Indian Constitution and were not covered by Section 5B of the Cinematograph Act. The proceeding pertaining to this will be heard on July 14, 2023, at 2:30 p.m. before Hon. Justice RI Chagla.

The biopic was first submitted to the CBFC for certification in December of last year, according to a source close to the project, who also said, "The film was initially submitted to the CBFC for certification in December 2022. However, certification was slow, and even after over three months passed, the CBFC stayed mute. In May 2023, RSVP filed a writ suit to the Bombay High Court seeking orders against the CBFC to decide the certification application. The CBFC stated at the hearing that a decision regarding the film's certification will be made by May 26, 2023. But, it's still pending!"

The movie, which was directed by Honey Trehan, is based on the real life of well-known human rights advocate Jaswant Singh Khalra. Arjun Rampal plays a significant role in the upcoming film, which also features Diljit Dosanjh in the lead role.
