And stuff...
We have a new community cat coming around, so we set up the video camera in prep for TNR. Here's some "and stuff" it caught! I love baby quail season in Arizona, but didn't expect the other guy. He's awfully cute, but won't help with the TNR...

Grow Your Own Beauty: How to Propagate and Care for Carissa macrocarpa 'Boxwood Beauty' in Arizona
Carissa macrocarpa is native to South Africa, where it grows along coastal dunes and in subtropical forests, thriving in the warm, sunny environments typical of these regions. The ‘Boxwood Beauty’ variety was bred for its compact size, making it an excellent choice for low hedges, borders, or as a foundation plant, beautifully complementing gardens with its glossy green leaves and delicate white…

Happy new year to Algy and friends from these fancy mites in Arizona.
Submitted by @textless
Algy is thrilled to welcome these amazing giant red velvet mites to his Hogmanay Hootenanny! He doesn't think he has ever had mites as party guests before, and he guesses that they may be his smallest guests ever, even if they are giants in their own world! As there are no termites in the Scottish Highlands, their predatory nature shouldn't be a problem at the party 😀
Algy wishes his longstanding friends @texless and @wayoutwest a very fluffy Happy New Year, and hopes that the year ahead will bring them many joyful outings in the remarkable landscape they live in, and result in many more wonderful studies of the tiny creatures in that environment. With much love and fluffy hugs 🤗

The first giant red velvet mites of the season.
They don't look very fearsome, but these little fluffballs are predators. They live underground, and the adults only emerge after heavy rain to hunt for swarming termites. You can read more about them at BugGuide.

We had a little friend this last banding session!

This is a juvenile Costa’s hummingbird! The third picture really shows off the tan “buffy” edges on their first fledgling feathers, which is one of the big identifiers you’ve got a juvie. This little guy came back six times during the session, and was chilling almost every time.

" Tinctorius Dendrobates " //© Meritt Thomas
"  Tinctorius is highly toxic if consumed !! It produces pumiliotoxins and allopumiliotoxins that the frog uses for self-defense. The main alkaloid carried by this species is pumiliotoxin (PTX), which is highly toxic. PTX interferes with the muscle contractions by affecting the calcium channels, causing locomotor difficulties, clonic convulsions, paralysis or even death.  D. tinctorius toxin can lead to cardio-respiratory problems, mainly through the neurotoxic action, which affects the sodium and potassium channels, impairing the muscle contraction, and consequently, the heart and breathing muscles " © Wikipedia
