so glad that even though I'm extremely fond of the name Henry (or Henri), it's too short for me to want for myself -- because while wanting your friend's deadname is one thing, wanting your cousin's current actual real name since birth and probably forever is. a whole 'nother bag of worms.

I have solved the mystery of why Spike feels so off in AtS Season 5. Because I'm rewatching Buffy's cameos in S1 of Angel and she feels the same way, in that she just doesn't feel like Buffy, at all. She's bitchier, whinier, way more self-absorbed, which was kinda the problem with Spike in AtS S5 as well.
And I can't help but wonder if that's because it's how Angel secretly sees them, so that's how they're portrayed on his show. It explains why he's such a dull hunk of wood and Spike is just charisma and sexiness and love and devotion and danger and pain on BtVS. Because that's how Buffy subconsciously sees them. Of course the actions are still the actions, obviously, however they're perceived, but that's not what I'm talking about. I mean that the characters were written and created from the POV of the protagonist, and even the actions we're not fond of just came along because the protagonist expected nothing less of them.
Would have been interesting to have a Spike series and see how he views these two lol. I'm guessing Angel as one of those French aristrocrats in a powdered wig and Buffy as a sword-wielding queen of the fairies.
----
Editing to add that I actually think there is a very clear divide on who belongs on which show. Angel, Cordy, Wesley, Faith, Harmony, Dru, and Darla THRIVED on AtS character-wise, and I actually liked every single one of them so much better on that show than I did on Buffy.
Spike and Buffy belong on the original. I'm a strong believer in crossovers, but only in micro doses, haha, and not destroying the stories that BtVS had been so carefully building.
Andrew can bop around on whatever show he wants, he's good at picking up the flavor of whoever he gets close to, like a mushroom.

One thing that I still wonder about to this day is who these two are
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
They are apparently part of the aristrocrats of evil (yk the organisation that o!ciel and vincent were part of) but we have never seen them before???
Knowing how yana is with foreshadowing, I'm sure they will appear or play a role later on but for now I can only theorize

Hello!! What would be Vasco or Machetes favorite fruits? Do you have any in mind?
I think Vasco would like peaches and plums, and in modern times mangos and bananas as well. To my understanding peaches were a rare and aristrocratic fruit at the time, but his family estate has a tree or two. He eats citrus as well, but mostly in cooked, candied or preserved form.
Machete likes pomegranates and figs. Pomegranates have to be de-seeded for him, since he hates getting the juices on him. Pears and apples, especially when eaten fresh, give him stomach issues. He had a Sicilian lemon tree imported and planted in the courtyard of his villa in Rome, but it has never fruited.
Both enjoy fresh grapes on occasion.

I think Stede is continuing a little bit of the 'treating them like his kids' thing from season 1:
Acting all surprised and interested when one of them tells him something they learned, so as to keep them talking all excited, and not make them feel dumb for not knowing things
Wait how come Stede knew damn well where China was when Ed suggested they ran away there but then doesn’t know where/what it is in season 2..?

The World in Deeper Inspection UPDATE Read: (Chapter 1: Pages 57 to 68) (COMPLETED)
About the comic
Grimsley confronts the man who set him on this goose chase.
And with that… that’s the end of the 10th Anniversary revamp!! Can’t believe it took me almost a year to get this short project done, but blame my school and day job for that! *drives the nail into the TWIDI IS NOT DEAD sign deeper into the wall*
It was enlightening to reinterpret my first ever completed comic (more complete than the strips and unfinished or one-off shorts I had done prior) – basically the one that started me down the road to a career as a published author. I was happy to see how much my style had improved – not just in the layout, flow and pacing – but in how my characters have become more expressive and energetic, and how comfortable I am with the cartooning. Here is the proof that drawing comics helps you get better at comics!! It only took 10 / 11 years!
Plus, after a long while of drawing with a more reserved, professional approach (see: Seance Tea Party, Alexander Comic), I enjoyed the abandon and whimsy of TWIDI. The lettering is inconsistent all over but that only adds to the handmade whimsical charm of TWIDI, so lol.
Anyway – I have the 10th Anniversary ebook edition up on my Ko-fi and itch.io! This edition carries both the original and revamped versions of Chapter 1. No new cover or illustration for it this time; I think they are perfect as they are.
I have been meaning to make a continuation of the end of TCM that bridges the start of Chapter 1. It’s a long time coming: a story that had somewhat existed since the early days of TWIDI in 2010. Hopefully I will find that stability in my life to return.
Open the cut below to see my notes.
There’s also nothing exciting here, EXCEPT I severely cut down on the number of panels (and the verbiage).
As with the previous spread I cut down and distilled a lot of the verbiage. I shifted the dialogue slightly so that the reveal that Mr. Brown is a Lord comes from Grimsley (in 2013, Mr Brown never admitted he was an aristrocrat until this page) – it made more sense since Grimsley had gotten the info independently from the newspaper article and Andrew, and Mr Brown not mentioning it himself fits with his whole lying thing. For this spread and the next couple of them I am zooming out the panels to include more scenery. The 2013 layouts felt very claustrophobic, with the over-reliance on bust shots of the characters to carry the tension of the conversation.
Some more dialogue trimming and background scenery. I decided to change the setting for the chase sequence to be within the cemetery – just ’cause it makes more sense than if it was done all around Brookham. The panelling for it is a bit more dynamic too – look, Grimsley is parkouring!!
I have no idea why 10 (actually, 11) years ago I had so much trouble conveying and pacing this sequence of Mr Brown being set on fire. That’s the hindsight of experience, I guess??? Anyway I added a few more panels for actual build-up, and the blocking is way better now – there’s more energy (especially Skeleton’s expressions) and clarity (omg we can finally see where and what’s happening to the lamp). The last panel is a new addition to better connect with the next spread. Also… I am excited to see how much further I can draw Mr. Brown’s demise.
Man, the difference some changes in pacing can make. I added some panels with witnesses to the fire, just to emphasise why Grimsley and Skeleton have got to run. It’s crazy enough if a Brookie has got to witness immolation in the middle of the Night, but two paranatural spookies??? Also human fat has such a colour hdsjkfhsdkf the things that come out of an immolated body are so eerie….
The 2013 spread is almost perfect. 18 Year Old Me got it.

i’m normally happy to let that blog flop in irrelevancy by itself, but there's a lot to unpack (not posting controversial bait is selective, ig) and i guess in dire times of low engagement, riding jane’s dick is a tried and true...
‘jane seymour didn't seem to have any female friends’
how would we know this? we have no evidence of private correspondence or of her life, overall, before 1536. she died the following year. that’s a very small window for evidence of a personal nature. we do know that she kept one of her female relatives close to her while she waited for news of anne’s execution (i presume it was anne stanhope), and she gave gifts to women in her household once queen.
also i think this argument that historical women have to have female friends as some sort of litmus test for innate moral fibre slightly... idk, i do not care if a historical figure fits the tiktok definitions of a ‘girl's girl’, like some sort of historical bechdel test. they’re aristocrats, they absolutely would not be my friend, so i do not care whether or not they had a sufficient amount of female friends within a circle of inbred aristrocrats.
‘wouldn't help her own widowed sister’
we don’t know why elizabeth didn’t reach out to jane for help, but it sure is interesting how the primary arguments made to explain this (that jane was not judged to hold enough influence, that thomas cromwell ‘got there first’, that elizabeth’s situation was not as dire as is assumed, there being a legitimate ideological or personal separation between the two women) are thrown out to intentionally cast jane as some sort of neglectful sister.
‘didn’t say shit about six innocent people getting murdered so she could be queen’
what exactly was she supposed to do? we have no sense of really anyone challenging the proceedings against anne. the only thing i can really think of is thomas cranmer... who still acted in compliance with those proceedings, regardless. jane had exponentially less power in this (extremely unusual) situation, i am not sure what exactly people want her to do, or what was in her capacity.
‘sat th[ere] waiting for news of anne dying to immediately take her place’
given how little we know about jane as person we really cannot presume her feelings or agency in that moment. the speed at which henry/cromwell moved against anne was unprecedented and it’s unrealistic that jane was actively responsible, or that she possessed the considerable power/influence required to move to execute an anointed queen. if she was willing at this point, we simply cannot know — we know she did not leave court or firmly reject henry, but as we don’t know why, we really cannot vilify her to any kind of major extent. so she stayed in london, living in opulence, but the alternative was rejecting a king who had just murdered his wife for her…
‘did nothing for the six’s children, including a two year old girl whose whole life just got destroyed’
except for when she provided clothes, books and jewels for elizabeth, and took mary norris into her household, and gifted her jewels...
beyond that, there was simply very little jane could realistically do for/with elizabeth. she was very young and there wasn’t a functional role for her or relationship they could have had.
‘and she’s remembered as the kind one.’
the bitch ass anon posting this:

( Norrington starter for @vxctorx )
The scorching reach of the sun may have changed per island, but if there was one abiding commodity that never altered, it was the soirees. It didn't matter whether the admiral found himself within the tropical air of Port Royal or amidst the brisk lands of Scotland, they were always the same. An embellished event hosted by another stakeholder or royal general in an attempt to flaunt their excess to those within their social standing. Still, it wasn't all bad. Throughout the hundreds of functions he had attended, James did find his own quiet amusement. Never in the dancing, of course, but more so in the music and the occasional, foreign delicacy being served. However, all in all, he found such events to be rather pointless. Trifling, at times, especially when other matters rested upon his plate.
Tumblr media
Still, all things considered, while taking his usual place as a decorated wallflower, even he had to admit that this particular soiree hosted by the Trevor Family was one for the books. Of course, he would appreciate not being bombarded with such repetitive, idle chatter regarding his sudden dismissal concerning his rank, and the even more sudden move, but it could be a lot worse. His hawkish gaze continued to scan the horizon's of the party from his wall when he noticed a golden figure amidst the crowd. The son of the Trevor's, he assumed. Oh, yes, he had met many a gentlemen like him even back in the West Indies. A stately aristrocrat bred for this lavished life.-- The admiral's gaze quickly drew back to the dancing guests when he noticed the gentleman return his wandering stare.
