Witchy, Volume 1.
In the witch kingdom Hyalin, the strength of your magic is determined by the length of your hair. Those that are strong enough are conscripted by the Witch Guard, who enforce the law in peacetime and protect the land during war. However, those with hair judged too long are pronounced enemies of the kingdom, and annihilated. This is called a witch burning.
Witchy is a young adult graphic novel about the young witch Nyneve, who is haunted by the death of her father and the threat the Witch Guard poses to her own life. When conscription rolls around, Nyneve has a choice to make; join the institution complicit in her father's death, or stand up for her ideals?

The Ariel / Riku Parallel and the future of Sora and Riku
This is a parallel I see covered a lot of the time but when it's mentioned the comparison usually involves Naminé in place of Ursula.
The parallel typically follows:
Ariel is Riku. They both wanted to see the outside world.
Sora is Prince Eric.
Naminé is/was Ursula (Vanessa).
Naminé (Ursula) used witch like powers to place Sora (Eric) in a trance and blind him from his true light/the one, Riku (Ariel).
It's a direct parallel that needs little analysis or explanation.
I have also seen fellow Sorikus touch on this parallel with the Final World tunnel scene where Sora notices that the Light is Riku much like Eric notices "the one" who sang to him and saved him in the storm is Ariel.
My theory is that this parallel goes beyond just the tunnel scene. In fact, I believe that Nomura is following the KH2 Atlantica storyline for Sora and Riku's eventual romance later in the games. Walk with me here.
-
The KH2 Atlantica story begins with Ariel saving Eric after a storm. She immediately falls in love, and sings to him. He wakes up just enough to hear her singing, she goes back to Atlantica and her father breaks her statue of him, her heart breaks and Ursula makes her contract with her...you know the tale.
In the KH2 version of this tale however, Ariel falls into a deep depression because she knows she can't be with a human up on land as a mermaid. Not to mention her father's hatred of humans casted fear and doubt into her. When Ariel and Eric defeat Ursula, Ariel reveals to Eric that she is actually a mermaid. However in this scene, Ariel hangs her head in shame and tells him "goodbye" anticipating that he would not accept her as she was. To her surprise, he does accept her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This scene always struck me because at no point in the original film is Ariel ever ashamed of being a mermaid, she simply knew as a mermaid she couldn't live on land with the one she loved. Why would shame and fear of not being accepted for who you are be added to this tale?
And it doesn't stop there. All throughout the Atlantica storyline, we're told that Ariel and Eric's love is a "forbidden love". A love that shouldn't happen between mermaid and human, sea and land. We're told how a "love struck" mermaid in the sea felt she could only love her human soulmate from afar, that they could never be together despite her wanting them to be.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Who, in the entire Kingdom Hearts cast, does this sound like? Who else, if confirmed that he truly is in love with Sora, would have a forbidden love?
There is no one else other than Riku. Kai*ri, as a cishet female, would not have a forbidden love with Sora. Riku, as a demi/gay male, would have the forbidden love.
Riku has spent a good portion of this series loving and protecting Sora from afar, most often than not, without Sora even being aware.
Who would be more likely to be "ashamed" for loving Sora, and fearful of rejection? Kai*ri, or Riku? In fact, just as Ariel was ashamed that she was originally a mermaid and had to transform into a human, Riku was ashamed that he had to borrow the powers of Ansem and transformed into Ansem.
--
Now why do I say this parallel is going to dictate the future of Sora and Riku's relationship? Because KH3 pretty much follows half of this parallel already.
We already know that Sora discovered that Riku was his true light in the tunnel. He then forgets all of this ever happened and forgets that he ever saved Riku.
Tumblr media
And not only that, but Riku's light is blocked out and Sora ends up thinking that the light belongs to another character.
That's right. Sora (Prince Eric) has yet another haze over his eyes. And instead of Naminé, this time Kairi is Ursula.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is an exact parallel of not only Atlantica, but of what happened in Chain of Memories with Naminé.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Naminé describes herself as a witch who controls the memories of Sora and everyone surrounding him.
Naminé is Ka*iri's Nobody, also described as her "alter ego". Vanessa is in a way Ursula's human alter ego, they're one in the same.
Ka*iri, most likely, has a similar power. She may not use it consciously, but whenever Sora turns his focus on Ka*iri, he forgets all about Riku. This has happened since KH1.
Ursula used her power to make Eric forget about Ariel, the girl who saved him and sang to him. Let's also not forget that Ursula made an appearance in Dream Drop Distance when Sora and Riku were building their dream raft.
We're following the Ariel parallel, just a bit out of order. We're past the point of Ariel's (Riku's) depression. We're past the point of Ariel makes a contract with Ursula to transform into a human / Riku making a contract with Ansem to transform into Ansem. We're at the point where Prince Eric is tricked by Ursula / Sora realized who his light is but forgot and is currently under the false impression that Kai*ri is his true light.
Memory of Melody aside, KH3 is the most recent major title in the series. KH2 happened way back in 2005 and Nomura is STILL referencing it. This tells me this parallel is not concluded nor going away, rather, it's building up. Which means, we will eventually reach the conclusion of this parallel.
Prince Eric finding the one. Sora finding his light.
Every Disney parallel thus far has either reached a conclusion, or is still ongoing (such as the Riku / Hercules and self sacrifice for love). I highly doubt this parallel will be dropped before its conclusion, unless Disney or some Square execs drop the hammer on it and either force Prince Sora to be with Kai*ri instead of Riku or force Sora into some "power of friendship" spiel. Or if Nomura's hands get sweaty and he remembers the pressures of homophobia in society and ends up fearing the anger of the fanbase for pushing an LGBTQ romance. So although I genuinely believe it's Nomura's intention to pair Sora and Riku given the buildup of their relationship over the longevity of this series, and the Disney couple parallels between the two, he may end up cracking and decide against pursuing it.
Given that Riku in the Novels all but confirmed Sora is his light and love and Nomura approved it, I'm hoping that he has the confidence in his tale to propel this love into the mainline titles. Nomura DID say that the series has taken a directional shift, this may be the shift he's referring to all along.
----
So what would a Soriku love look like in future titles? Well let's look at the portion of the Atlantica parallel not explored yet.
Ariel returned Prince Eric's pendant. The Crown Necklace theory and Shooting Star Memory has yet to be addressed. Perhaps at some point in Quadratum Sora loses his crown necklace, Riku finds it and returns it to him triggering the both of them to finally address the Crown Necklace with Sora remembering that Riku is the one who gave it to him in the first place. Sora remembering that Riku was the light in the darkness and not Kai*ri is now a new plot point needing to be addressed. Just as Eric realized Ariel was the one he was looking for all along, he declared his love for her. Sora will eventually realize Riku was the one he's been searching for all his life and will probably apologize for not realizing it sooner.
Not to mention the Hercules parallel of self sacrifice for true love has also yet to be addressed on Sora's end. He's still figuring out what love is and what love means. Both the Ariel-Eric and Hercules-Meg parallels end with a confession of love. That confession may just be how Kingdom Hearts ends.
Additional Note: Do I think there will be a Soriku kiss? Maybe, but it most likely won't happen in-game.
I instead believe that Soriku will be confirmed with a koibito tsunagi - an interlocking hand hold that roughly translates to "lover's connection". Nomura and other Square Enix devs have used this before, especially in FF7 Remake when Aerith takes Cloud's hand and interlocks his fingers with hers (on their date towards the end of the game), further confirming her feelings for him. It's a subtle way of showing a character's affection and I think it will be fitting for both Sora and Riku.

what is apparent from a lot of comics disk horse is that aside from the characters a lot of people hold some degree of disdain for comics as a medium and practise for telling stories. they think it’s beneath them and refuse to engage on any level,
anyway i encourage everyone to read indie and autobio comics from artists who aren’t a part of the big two. read ariel slamet ries and petra nordlund and linnea sterte and emily carroll and marjane satrapi and maybe you’ll feel better

Recently, I had sketched a fan-depiction of the Forever Blue or Endless Ocean crew, including the fellows of the first Endless Ocean, the second Endless Ocean 2 (Blue World) and the third Endless Ocean Luminous that came out in this year, allowing the sea-ries to surface from the depths of acknowledgments once more. The initial sea-ries was made by Arika on the Wii during the late 2000s and some even describe it as being part of the Frutiger Aero aesthetic.
This videogame sea-ries is one of my most beloved I ever got to witness. I had found it in the first tide in my local library and borrowed it to play on my Wii. My first experience was the second game. At first, I did not think too much of it, but then I was stunned by the fascinating aspect to free roam across the oceans and the sublime scenery, including the awe-inspiring music. The music is shrimply splendid and sparked my adoration for the Celtic Woman music group. For unknowing fellows, it comprises of very mysterious or glorious tunes. The game is as ambiguous as the ocean itself. Many situations are mysterious, scary or outright beautiful and triumphant. It really allows one to directly immerse into the story, especially with the amazing music. My first real encounter with this charm was in the Gatama Atoll upon encountering the Blue Cliff. It sent my mind to such a state in which I was both petrified and admiring it because of the music as if I really was seeing in it before my eyes in life. It was a rather surreal experience. Now, the story itself is deep and down-to-earth in many aspects, but I still wonder how they got to travel in one day across the planet to the other side in just one day with no troubles, dude. The well-made, magical cutscenes that are played often "out of the blue" contribute to the immersion and charm a lot like upon discovering some certain sea creature. All the story's fellows have their own amazing personality, enabling the story to become something utterly fin-tastic. I based the sketch of mine on the personalities of the crew, including how Gaston Gray is depicted by the side of Hayako since he would supposedly "jokingly" flirt with her ingame, which is not a direct reference here but only a note in order to allude to that. Nancy would perhaps not be part of the crew directly, yet I featured her since she provides them with essential equipment and helps out. Here she is holding a treasure which she analyzed from the player, perhaps a bar or small treasure box. Do not get me started on the whimsical comfort that it brings. Little details like the fellows saying something upon looking at a sea creature or just being able to play the guitar after finishing the quest enraptures me. The game surfaced my deep-found finterest in the oceans' life. While I had already adored nautical topics, this game ascended my expectations. It lit my liking for goblin sharks and siphonophores, for example. It was so educational and allowed curiousity to flourish. When my borrowed copy of the game had to be returned back then, I panicked because I did not know that the save file is not stored on the CD, but on the console. Mind ye, I once had borrowed an Ariel mermaid game for the Nintendo DS whose saves were stored on the chip and not on the console. I was also scared that my progress would be lost because initially I had lost some because I did not know that I had to manually save in Endless Ocean itself. While I explored and found the diving logbook, I originally did not think that it was meant for saving the game. In the first tide, I thought I would be able to write down notes for myself in that book. However, when I got a copy once more as a gift, I continued to swim through the waters of the game with optimism, relieved that the progress was not lost to the waves.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Depiction of Silvia the goblin shark from 2023, a friend of one of my original characters named Sirena/Serena/Searena who is a waterperson. Earlier Silvia was not a goblin shark, yet later versions were inspired by the goblin sharks in EO.
Anyhow, I would play this for days on end. My favorite aspect was to customize my diver to my liking and create stories in my mind. Their name was Lilija, a name I used to admire and would have liked to be called. At first, my standard diving suit would be pink and purple, my favorite colors at the time. Later into the story, I would select the diving suit with the purple and pink scaly pattern and imagine they would be a legged mermaid that could dive in the oceans and transform back into a human form. They would have a fish-tailed mermaid sibling visiting them on the Nineball island to communicate or deliver news. One of their other friends would be one of the dolphins or whales, living with them among the waves of the "endless" oceans. Lilija would ride on one of them. However, when I got the shark suit after I befriended the dolphins, I would imagine them to be an anthropomorphic shark who could shapeshift into a human ashore, similar to the Fijian Dakuwaqa or the dogfish-people from Haida mythology. The latest form of her would be the brown greenish scaled monster diving suit, reminiscent of the first one, but with the dorsal fin and gills of the shark. In all of these forms, my character would help out the diving service mostly, but other tides I imagined they would get caught by some divers and put into the aquarium.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Human Shark" depictions from 2020, the latter used as a thumbnail for one of my videos on playing EO despite the design not being used. They used to be called Lilija and in ca. 2020 they were renamed to Shona, the human shark because I saw the prior name as not very suitable anymore.
I also loved all of the quests. It was flooded to the brim with finteresting ones that I sought after to complete. One aspect that bothers me would be the titles. Most of them are way too tedious and almost impossible to master without a guide!
After the second game, I got the first. That one's music was, if not, just as great. I loved that one almost as the second, but it felt more lonely and not as lively, especially because of the difficult-to-find sea creatures, areas and artifacts. It felt like an eternity to lurk around and find them, but this may also add to its stark mystery. The map is beautiful, but not as diverse as the ones from the second game. However, there is much hidden lore within the game. It's not as up-beat as the second game, but still as deep and finteresting. I adored the ruins, mermaid palace cave and the ship that one could get to steer around, including the ghost ship that would spook. That one was so mysterious.
Now, I never got to play Luminous and I do not really think I will. I had solely seen gameplay. It does not seem like a sequel to the prior ones, more like an finspired game, despite me having anticipated a third game for years. While it does account for the "endless" ocean unlike the preceding games with its maps that can be newly generated every tide, it is more just of a diving simulator with not too much of an immersive story to follow. Unlike the first games, it lacks the personality of the immersive feeling that the preceding ones portrayed. What the prior games lured me with was their magic and mystery in regards to their story. It felt like an established narrative waiting to be uncovered, but the third game feels a bit overwhelming, perhaps hollow since it only goes on endlessly. This third game in the sea-ries feels a little out of the tide, especially because it seems like those in charge may have not perceived what made the prior games what they were. Still and all, the newest installation feels somewhat commercial and made for profit instead. Its graphics seem more artificial and "cheap" in some aspects. The maps' generation can be quite random, while it depends on what kind of map one gets since some may be good, in general it feels more chaotic and less polished. While prior games may be more pixelated and early-made, they were more charming than the smooth and plastic graphics of the third installation for some reason, those being not as immersive and the lighting is a bit selcouth. No people can be directly seen, only behind diving masks and even the guide is an artificial intelligence. The diver cannot be customized as diversely, but the oceans can be explored more. Many new creatures can be discovered too that were not featured in prior games, but in my opinion, some of the mythical ones seem a bit overdone, but I still adore the sea creatures of extinct tides for example. Many creatures also spawn randomly outside of natural habitats from what I have heard. I am not very fond of icy waters existing directly beside warmer ones. Anyhow, I still like that the game goes into a different, more mystical tide. One element I really like would be the emotes. However, the animations seem a bit awkward and artificial. There is also some sort of lag. When the diver stops, the transitions are stopping abruptly, the diver being pushed back a little and it feels robotic unlike in the first games. All the turns of the diver look often weird and the idle looks a bit helpless contrary to the first divers who would look more grounded and stern, the third game makes the diver more cartoonish and playful. It reminds me of cheaply-made diving simulators on mobile that I would play and get disappointed from, unfortunately. Actually, the animation of the third game really resembles those mobile ones very much. The more global multiplayer aspect seems amazing unlike in the first games where only few got to encounter each other, if one knew someone with a capability of the wii wifi feature in the first tide. What I like story-based is the ancient tablet story as it seems finteresting to an extent, but one has to grind a lot just to unlock parts of it. One of my notes alongside would be the reference to the ancient civilization being named "Oannes", the merman of Mesopotamian mythology who brought civilization much knowledge. In the second game, the "Okeanides" civilization is based on the oceanids, the ocean nymphs of Greek mythology, female humanoid sea spirits. In spite of my view being more negative, the game is still good in its own tide. It can be enjoyed in its own tide absent of the classic games. Of course I do not have much of an acclaimed saying because I never played it yet, but this is just what I observed so far. Shorely I am more accustomed to the classic games and my personal expectations were just not met, residing in the past rather than the present.
In all games I adore the educational, mythology and folklore aspects.
Every game in the sea-ries is still great in its own tide and many should be enjoyed on their own! I am very grateful for the developers who made the sea-ries. Thank you for the Endless Ocean Wiki crew for having made the knowledge of the sea-ries accessible in order to help fellows find all knowledge of the sea-ries. Without it, it would not be very sea-sy.
May the new tide of life guide one well

Can you do the new sternritter's Vollstandig Name in the new anime?
Oh yeah, I wasn't sure if there had been any kanji released for that but it seems like the Bleach wiki has something up there for them, although they haven't cited their sources, as usual... They cite the chapter and episode they each appear in respectively, but go figure, you guys... the anime appearance does not include t e x t. So no idea where either the kanji or the romanized names came from.(wait did they get the kanji and katakana from Japanese closedcaptioning? Do they include furigana on [cc] in Japan??)
This wound up way longer than I'd intended...
Tumblr media
Balbarriel[神の雷霆] phonetically, BA-RU-BA-RI-E-RU[バルバリエル]. So weirdly this is how Japanese defines the name Ramiel/Remiel/Reniel[רַעַמְאֵל] the name of an actual biblical angel, so both Japanese epithets here, plus the original hebrew all translate as "Thunder of God." But oddly it sounds a lot more like Bariel, which is an angel named in the Ars Paulonia, part of the Lesser Key of Solomon, a grimoire foundational to a lot of the surviving legacy of Christian occultism and demonology nonsense.(i.e. It was some nerd's 18th century Pokedex of fanfic and headcanons.) That being said, it has no actual meaning the way biblical angels(Gabriel, Raphael, Ariel, Uriel, Michael, etc...) do, because it's not hebrew and the idiot who made it up in the 1800s obviously didn't know what he was talking about. It is of course the exact same kanji used for her Schrift The Thunderbolt[雷霆].
Tumblr media
Azhalbiora[神の死] meaning "Death of God" and written as phonetically A-ZA-RU-BI-O-RA[アザルビオラ]. Other than seemingly a little lazy the name just kinda doesn't make a lot of sense as a name for her power. And once again there is no apparent basis in actual angelic names so it's not like there's context to work with. It has an almost vaguely fake "arabic" sound to it? Like the sort of shit H.P Lovecraft would've come up with?
Tumblr media
Pornipora[神の力] I'm sure any weeb worth their salt can recognize the kanji for "power," so it's "Power of God." And the phonetics are POO-NI-PO-RA[ポーニポラ].
Tumblr media
Gagael[神の飢え] at last something resembling creative input! "Hunger of God," in which [飢え] is not just directly lifted from her existing Schrift. ([食いしんぼう]: "Glutton/Gourmand." Same root kanji though so they weren't thinking that hard.) And while the phonetics, GA-GA-E-RU[ガガエル] are yet more gibberish, they at least go back to the sort of appropriated hebrew -el[אֵל] meaning "of god" used in the names of the aforementioned biblical archangels.
[edit]: and since there's a new one to add to this list...
So, you've probably noticed these all just use the same kanji as the girls' actual Schrifts, so there's nothing terribly clever going on, which isn't too surprising but is kind of a shame no one took the opportunity to get creative with it. (Even the attacks names they peppered into the extended fight scene were a little too goofy and bland for my taste. I mean, come on, giving Lili attacks called Spork and Spife?? Really?)
Thunder[雷霆] and Thunder[雷霆]
Deadperson[死者] and Dead[死]
Power[力] and Power[力]
Glutton[食いしんぼう] and Hunger[飢え]
Tumblr media
For comparison the side by side on Kubo's actual Vollstandig and associated Schrift were:
Prison[監獄] vs Righteouness[正義]
Fear[恐怖*] vs Be afraid(of)[怯え] (*technically As Nodt's Schrift was never written out, but that's the kanji he used talking about "Fear" all the time when using it so I consider it a safe assumption.)
Love[愛] vs Love[情愛] (I don't know how to clarify the distinction between these two words... the former is more broad? Like it can include a few extra examples the latter can't?)
Penetrate Everything[万物貫通] vs Judgement[裁き]
Lethal Dose[致死量] vs Tasting(for poison)[毒見]
Miracle[奇跡] vs Authority[権能]
Oh and also the names
Piskiel[ピスキエル]
Grimaniel[グリマニエル]
Tatarforas[タタルフォラス]
Gudoero[グドエロ]
Jilliel[ジリエル]
Hasshein[ハスハイン]
Aschetonig[アシュトニグ]
Are basically all gibberish too, so I can't exactly say the names don't fit a "pattern," since there isn't on, but they still don't feel quite right to me, save maybe Lili's. Hasshein and Aschetonig are at least clearly playing with German-esque phonetics*, and Piskiel, Grimaniel, and Jilliel are all playing into recognizable angelology cliches. (Gudoero/Gudoel might be too, but in a way that's hard to separate it from the clearl intentional "ero" wordplay. It just doesn't work outside of th eJapanese phonetics.) And Tartarforas is just suspiciously close to Tartarus but otherwise doesn't really register to my ear as any language that would make sense in the context of the Quincy's associations...
Wait... The German sounding ones might actually be German after all. Like, bad German, but technically German...
Tumblr media
*Asche is a n fact German for "Ash," and Ton is "Clay," in fact Tonig can mean "Clayley" as in "Clay-like" so I guess Gerard's actually is German for "Clay-like Ash"... That's actually kind of cool, and vaguely biblical? Adam being sculpted from clay, and "Ashes to ashes, dust to dust" and all that? Huh... Weird I never bothered to actually check that I guess, I just assumed if most of them were nonsense that even the ones that sounded more legit would be too...
Wait... Damn... have I really been slacking this much???
Tumblr media
The Haß sound in Hasshein could be the German for "Hate" and although it's not really a ""word"" in a functional sense by itself, hein is a part of the term Freund Hein is a kind of grim reaper where, I guess "Hein" was kind of an old euphemism for the devil for some reason? So, Death personified is the "Friend (of) Hein/TheDevil" but I'd bet the intended reading of Kubo's slapdash German here would be "Hate(s) Death" as is suitable to Askin's whole shtick of narrowly avoiding death.
I'm mad I never sat down and tried to hash those out sooner...

OKAY RUNNING TO YOU TO FINALLY TELL YOU MORE ABOUT MY NEWEST BABY (ALSO I FINALLY DECIDED ON HER NAME)
So!!!! Short version: that's "Ri", my nomad baby!!! She's NOT V and she exist in the same universe as V and Lychee. (you don't have to use the quotes!!!)
Okay so "Ri" (ugh I'll explain why I use quotes later) is still from the Bakker family. When she was a toddler her mother dropped her to her own mother and left the family and her kid behind. In a few years she came back with another kid and left her to her mother too. So poor grandma had to raise 2 kids from the little age. "Ri" and her sister Arielle were very close and "Ri" was a dutiful older sister. When they got older they started to feel the upcoming death of the family but while "Ri" desided to stay Ari decided to join Snake Nation. While she was there something bad happened to her and she was killed (sorry the whole story will probably need tws). "Ri" got a voicemail that recorded everything that happened what led her to going mad from the rage. She demanded the help from her family asking them to help her to revenge her sister but the family which was already weak refused. She left the family and went on several month trip locating that family of Snake Nation which invited Ari in and the man who killed her. She tried to ask for the justice from the heads of Snake Nation but they blatantly refused her. In the end she had her revenge when she sneaked in the camp and killed the children of this man and when he saw them killed him too... Yeah.... The whole campaign took almost a year of her life and when she finished it she had nowhere to go - her family was gone but she also was betrayed by them and would never join them again. In the end she went to NC and stayed there.
When she came to NC she completely refused her old name as the sign of her resentment to her roots. And well also she has huge identity issues since her mental health isn't the best (huge understatement) after everything. She doesn't call herself in any way so "Ri" is only for the people to address her. "Ri" is ofc her sister's name. As I mentioned the usage of the quotes isn't necessary ajdhsjsj it's just she isn't Ri for me so I use them but ofc it isn't the case for you!!!
She's often battling her own demons but she's still pretty easygoing person. She's a merc and while she doesn't strive for the popularity or money she still manages to reach the Afterlife. She's very good friends with Val and they're pretty close with each other!!!
Please treat her gently as she's sharing the most of me (づ ̄ ³ ̄)づ (*˘︶˘*).。.:*♡ Thank you for reading this till the end :D 💖💖💖

Hey, I saw you mention your magic system is based around hair. Have you read Witchy by Ariel Ries? It’s a published comic that started as a webcomic in the 2010’s, I think it could be an amazing worldbuilding resource for you. Have a good one!
I'll check it out, thank you!

Let’s talk about Pepper. Because I’ve been reading Good Omens again, and the book-specific bits are just too much fun not to share.
First, she’s a girl obviously, but a girl named Pippin (for a start), and a girl with that precise blend of hippie optimism and commonsense no-nonsense attitude that makes her such a force to be reckoned with. She is vicious, but in a truly fun way.
If it had been Wensley who had said that, there'd have been a half-hearted scuffle, as between friends. But the other Them had long ago learned that Pepper did not consider herself bound by the informal conventions of brotherly scuffles. She could kick and bite with astonishing physiological accuracy for a girl of eleven. Besides, at eleven years old the Them were beginning to be bothered by the dim conception that laying hands on good ole Pep moved things into blood-thumping categories they weren't entirely at home with yet, besides earning you a snake-fast blow that would have floored the Karate Kid.
But she was good to have in your gang. They remembered with pride the time when Greasy Johnson and his gang had taunted them for playing with a girl. Pepper had erupted with a fury that had caused Greasy's mother to come round that evening and complain.
[Greasy Johnson was a sad and oversized child. There's one in every school; not exactly fat, but simply huge and wearing almost the same size clothes as his father. Paper tore under his tremendous fingers, pens shattered in his grip. Children whom he tried to play with in quiet, friendly games ended up getting under his huge feet, and Greasy Johnson had become a bully almost in self-defense. After all, it was better to be called a bully, which at least implied some sort of control and desire, than to be called a big clumsy oaf. He was the despair of the sports master, because if Greasy Johnson had taken the slightest interest in sport, then the school could have been champions. But Greasy Johnson had never found a sport that suited him. He was instead secretly devoted to his collection of tropical fish, which won him prizes. Greasy Johnson was the same age as Adam Young, to within a few hours, and his parents had never told him he was adopted. See? You were right about the babies.] Pepper looked upon him, a giant male, as a natural enemy.
She herself had short red hair and a face which was not so much freckled as one big freckle with occasional areas of skin.
That red hair bit is interesting, because it makes such an interesting visual connection to War, doesn’t it? Also it would have had me picturing a white, practically Irish or Scottish child with flaming red locks blowing in the wind, like Merida from Brave. Or maybe Molly Weasley taking on Beatrix Lestrange in the final Harry Potter book. Having her played by a black child actress is really interesting; not that black characters can’t have red hair -- Halle Berry’s Ariel, for instance -- but unconscious biases being what they are, that’s not where my brain went. Kudos to the Good Omens fandom for this not being much of a thing, at least to the extent I was involved back in 2019.
Also, I hope I’m not being insensitive to describe her as black. Most of my more PC descriptors come with an -American hyphenate, which obviously isn’t right; and a quick search for Amma Ris’s background just describes her as Welsh. Which of course she is; and somehow simply Welsh is like a breath of fresh air.)
Anywho. Getting back to the chapter.
Pepper's given first names were Pippin Galadriel Moonchild. She had been given them in a naming ceremony in a muddy valley field that contained three sick sheep and a number of leaky polythene teepees. Her mother had chosen the Welsh valley of Pant-y-Gyrdl as the ideal site to Return to Nature. (Six months later, sick of the rain, the mosquitoes, the men, the tent-trampling sheep who ate first the whole commune's marijuana crop and then its antique minibus, and by now beginning to glimpse why almost the entire drive of human history has been an attempt to get as far away from Nature as possible, Pepper's mother returned to Pepper's surprised grandparents in Tadfield, bought a bra, and enrolled in a sociology course with a deep sigh of relief.)
There are only two ways a child can go with a name like Pepper Galadriel Moonchild, and Pepper had chosen the other one: the three male Them had learned this on their first day of school, in the playground, at the age of four.
They had asked her her name, and, all innocent, she had told them.
Subsequently, a bucket of water had been needed to separate Pippin Galadriel Moonchild's teeth from Adam's shoe. Wensleydale's first pair of spectacles had been broken, and Brian's sweater needed five stitches.
The Them were together from then on, and Pepper was Pepper forever, except to her mother, and (when they were feeling especially courageous, and the Them were almost out of earshot) Greasy Johnson and the Johnsonites, the village's only other gang.
“Pepper was Pepper forever.” She sure as heck is, isn’t she? I do believe I’m in love. She also has a little sister who’s as fair game for punching down on as any tomboyish eleven year old ever was; and just as unskilled at it. (Though she does get away with it in the end; just not with quite as much dignity as she might have preferred.)
"Art thou a witch, oh lay?" said the chief Inquisitor.
"Yes," said Pepper's little sister, who was six and built like a small golden-haired football. "You mustn't say yes, you've got to say no," hissed the Head Torturer, nudging the suspect. "And then what?" demanded the suspect.
"And then we torture you to make you say yes," said the Head Torturer. "I told you. It's good fun, the torturin'. It doesn't hurt. Hastar lar visa," she added quickly.
The little suspect gave the décor of the Inquisitorial headquarters a disparaging look. There was a decided odor of onions.
"Huh," she said. "I want to be a witch, wiv a warty nose an' a green skin an' a lovely cat an' I'd call it Blackie, an' lots of potions an'-"
The Head Torturer nodded to the Chief Inquisitor.
"Look," said Pepper, desperately, "no one's saying you can't be a witch, you jus' have to say you're not a witch. No point in us taking all this trouble," she added severely, "if you're going to go round saying yes the minute we ask you."
The suspect considered this.
"But I wants to be a witch," she wailed. The male Them exchanged exhausted glances. This was out of their league.
"If you just say no," said Pepper. "You can have my Sindy stable set. I've never ever used it," she added, glaring at the other them and daring them to make a comment.
"You have used it," snapped her sister, "I've seen it and it's all worn out and the bit where you put the hay is broke and-"
Adam gave a magisterial cough.
"Art thou a witch, viva Espana?" he repeated.
The sister took a look at Pepper's face, and decided not to chance it. "No," she decided.
This whole scene has such an air of childish logic that’s quite logical to the child. There are squabbles and meanness but also camaraderie, and an appeal to reason that seems to make good sense to them. And, in addition to reminding me of how well these authors wrote other children and gave weight to their emotional realities (I’m thinking of Coraline in particular), it also drives home just how young eleven really is. This is the cohort of our feared antichrist. Reality shapes itself according to his whims; and look how whim-like those whims really are for all of them. They’re real to them, though, which is probably enough. Terrifying, if frightfully real.
I’m a bit rushed today but couldn’t quite resist sharing all these book-specific bits with all of you. So fun! But so... telling.
This section also includes Adam’s first meeting with Anathema, which is just an utterly fascinating look at how our expectations blind us to the reality of the situation. But that’s worth its own post, and needs more time than I have to give just now anyway. Hopefully in a day or two.
For now: “Pepper is perfection and really my kind of character” is conclusion enough for one day. She really, really is.

Call me Sea! (they/them) I'm a Non-Binary Aromantic Asexual Filipino American and Full-Time Library Worker (currently in my late 20s)! In my spare time, I bounce from interest to interest while doodling and writing and exploring different aspects of storytelling. I tend to view things under a queer lens or have fun thinking about what if scenarios. You'll mostly see me posting fanworks, but every once in a blue moon I'll let my original work see the light of day.
I do not take commissions, but I will sometimes ask for doodle requests. DO NOT ask me to create anything that promotes incest, pedophilia, or acts of bigotry (racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, etc) in any form (Don't Interact with me if you support that stuff either). I also don't create anything NSFW, but I'm usually fine seeing that kinda content (except fetish and heavy gore). I'm Very Fond of hurt/comfort scenarios, familial bonds, and sapphic romance, so absolutely talk to me about that stuff if you wanna!
