American Juniors & S Club 8
American Juniors
Lately I have been watching Pretty Little Liars. I originally wasn’t interested in the show, then my mother and I decided it will be our next series that we will enjoy together. In one of the early episodes, Aria (played by Lucy Hale) sings a song. I then had a peep at her Wikipedia to see if she was actually singing (she was) I found out about a few very interesting things.
In 2003 Lucy was part of a American TV show “American Juniors”, a musical talent show created by Simon Fuller that auditioned children to assemble a music group of the same name. Although it had some success with ratings, the show was called off after one season (17 episodes).
American Juniors had two albums, the second album (”Kids In America”) technically being a cast album from the show as it was recorded by all the top ten finalists. The first album only featured the 5 winners Lucy Hale, Chauncey Matthews, Tori & Taylor Thompson and Danielle White.
youtube
The show was to a degree based off “American Idol”, but was more focused on mirroring the UK talent show “S Club Search’. American Juniors covered many S Club 8 songs on their album “American Juniors” including the song “One Step Closer”.
S Club Juniors
The show, obviously by it’s name, recruited and auditioned children to make up an all children S Club cover band. The concept of the show was to create a support act for the “S Club 7 Carnival 2002 tour”. They also co-headlined the “S Club United tour” in 2003. It aired in 2001 with 12 episodes and one season.
Interestingly, the band had 8 members, unlike the original S Club 7. The winning contestants were Calvin Goldspink, Daisy Rebecca Evans, Jay Perry Asforis, Stacey McClean, Aaron Paul Renfree, Hannah Richings, Frankie Sandford, Rochelle Wiseman.
The band focused on releasing music in the style of S Club, rather than being an out right S Club cover band. Their first album sold over 600,000 copies in the UK and went Platinum twice.

Fic: Can I just get away with saying ‘I love this’ and move on?
Aria: No. Justine: Absolutely not.
Fic: But does anyone besides me actually care? It’s a silly premise in a super-saturated genre that very few people are likely to be watching.
Aria: You put off posting all damn week and just dropped a series, Fic, you’re doing this.
Fic [Sighs]: Okay... Good to see you, friends! Welcome to Isekitis.
Symptoms: You’d think this episode would follow directly from the previous one where Blue Idiot saved the two love inter- AH! I mean ladies from those thugs, and it kinda does. If ‘follow directly’ is code for ‘cut to them having coffee the next day. Fortunately Shin’s crush on “Not-Azura-from-Fire-Emblem” seems to be requited.
We learn that the red head is named Maria and “Not-Azura” is called Sizilien. Wouldn’t you know it the two ladies who show up in the OP and have main-character hair are going to be testing into the Magic Academy! Wow! How very groundbreaking. Seems Maria’s heard about Merlin’s grandson coming to attend the Academy as well and is super psyched as she’s a major Wiseman/Guru fangirl. Shin just barely dodges an awkward conversation for the time being and proceeds to head into testing.
Naturally the first thing he does is piss off an upstart noble dickbag with his utter lack of status recognition and mad judo skills. Upstart (Who I will from now on be referring to as THIS ASSHOLINGTON III) is about to blow his top and do something he’ll regret when the Prince shows up to wave his station around while lecturing about not waving your station around. To his credit he specifically seems to only do so to get actual dickbags to shut up. Kind of hard to throw your social standing around when the freaking PRINCE is there to say “Oh hey? Are we abusing our station? I’d love to get in on that action. How about I just completely nullify your position of power by sticking up for the people you’re trying to abuse?”
So, care to guess who gets the top score on the entrance exam?
THAT’S RIGHT! It’s THIS ASSHOLINGTON III!
...
...
...
Yeah I didn’t think that’d fly it’s Shin.
Once Maria and Sizilien find out who Shin really is they decide to come to him for help with a problem. Sizilien has a particularly persistent suitor who keeps using his position to harass her. (Gee why does this sound familiar?) She and Maria are explaining the situation when THIS ASSHOLINGTON III shows up to Harrass Sizilien claiming she’s his fiancee. (Oh that’d be why.) Shin steps in, as he is wont to do and is all like.
“Back off, slim pickins, this girl deserves better than you.”
“You wanna bet? If you don’t marry me Sizzler-”
“Sizilien”
“Whatever! If you don’t marry me then I’ll have my daddy fire your daddy!”
Then Princey shows up and says, “Oh hey! Are we abusing our station? I’d love to get in on that action. How about I just completely nullify your position of power by sticking up for the people you’re trying to abuse?” (Deja Vu much?)
And THIS ASSHOLINGTON III runs away to go cry into his pillows for roughly three eternities.
Shin decides that this probably won’t be the last they see of THIS ASSHOLINGTON III so he proposes they all head to his grandparents house and discuss what other measures can be taken. Maria just about breaks at the thought of meeting her Idols and everyone piles into a carriage or two to visit the wizard, the wonderful wizard of Oz.
Shin then proceeds to break the brains of everyone present by revealing 1) That he’s re-enchanted his uniform into what Granny Melida calls “A National-Treasure level Protective Gear” and the fact that he can create FUCKING TESSERACTS! Leading to the image I used for this week’s header.
Aria’s thoughts: What the hell does this kid being a reincarnated salaryman have to do with the story? What narrative weight does it have? So far I’m seeing nothing, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. I just feel like this show might actually have gained more traction if it had dropped the Isekai element. If it’d been straight fantasy about the OP adoptive grandson of the world’s hero then it probably would have gained a few points in the synopsis lotto. I’ll reserve absolute judgement on that score until we see whether or not it actually has any narrative weight outside of “Oh hey guys this qualifies as an Isekai now!”
Justine’s thoughts: Did Granny Melida have to test Sizilien like that? I mean what Grandpa Merlin says checks out: If Melida had just allowed it then Sizilien would probably have been eaten whole by guilt in the long run. Still it seemed a bit cruel. There had to have been gentler ways to go about it.
Fic: Uhm, Justine, you’re supposed to be the non-critical voice.
Justine: I know, but this bugged me. It seemed unnecessarily harsh. Besides! I’m not criticizing the writing I’m criticizing the character.
Aria: Hey, I’m not fussed.
Well alright then. I guess that’ll do us for Kenja no Mago. Just one more show to do for catchup this week. Until then keep talking fiction, friends.
We’ll see you soon!

Original Fic Fest, intro Post
I stumbled upon this early this morning and taking it as a sign, decided to participate in @originalficfest!
About Me: My name is J.S. Walker, I’m 28 years old and I live in South Texas. I have a B.A. in History, though I honestly don’t know what to do with it. I’ve been creating stories for years but it wasn’t until a few years ago that I sat down and really started writing them. I’ve got half a dozen or so original works but at the moment I’m focusing on just one. My biggest hope is that any beta readers or other writers will read my stories and give me the necessary critiques to improve on my work and encouragement that what I’m writing is entertaining.
The WIP: For the last four years I’ve been working a series known as SPIRITS. The stories follows a group of friends who are apart of a ghost hunting group known as the Society of Paranormal Investigators, Researchers and Independent Truth Seekers, aka SPIRITS. After an old friend goes missing, the group bands together and gathering new members along the way, set out to learn what became of their missing friend and her connection to the sudden increase in paranormal activity in their beloved hometown.
The story is set in a fictional town known as Heatherton, located somewhere between east and south Texas. Its modern times, though I don’t have a specific year in mind. Its a fairly large cast of characters, something I’ve always had a deep fondness for and each character usually gets at least one story centered around them.
Major themes include the importance of The Power of Friendship, family of choice and the importance of doing something and helping those who can’t help themselves.
The Characters: Its a large cast but here is a list of central characters
Margot Verne: A Bisexual dark skinned black woman, she's tall at 5'9, pudgy, with a round face, full lips intelligent brown eyes and has natural curly hair she dyes different colors, currently lilac. Team leader and tech genius who makes all her own equipment by hand.
Joe Specter: An Asexual white man, little pale, he's Jewish, short at 5'1. He has straight brown hair that reaches just below his ears that he can pull back into a short ponytail. Straight face, slightly pointed nose, wears glasses and has grey eyes. A tech genius like Margot, he's the guy who fixes stuff.
Aria Wiseman: A Demisexual white woman, little tan from the sun, she's average height at 5'5. Has dark blonde wavy hair reaches to waist, blue eyes, freckles across nose, an oval shaped face, thin and willowy. Team mom.
Taya Martinez: A Heterosexual Hispanic woman, tall at 5'7, with tawny skin tone, long straight black hair past her waist, vibrant golden-brown eyes. Toned body, strong legs, muscular. She has a scar on her left hand that is faded. Is our central most protagonist.
Piper Jamieson: A Pansexual Asian American woman, a little short at 5'3, very pretty, with clear smooth skin. Large, round carnelian brown eyes. Rosy cheeks, bright and happy smile. Heart shaped face, a little pudgy.
Jason "Chase" Miller: A Heterosexual white man, tall at 5'8, handsome with athletic physique. Has freckles, dark red hair and green eyes, an Irish nose and a prosthetic left foot. Is rich and uses his wealth and connections to help his friends.
Danny Vasquez: An Asexual black man, the tallest in the cast at 6'0, attractive, long limbs, thin, round face, full lips, hair cut short and stylish, wears reading glasses. Writers callus on his fingers and is ambidextrous. Level headed and calm, keeps everyone grounded to reality. Is the Team Dad.
Just the basics but I hope that everyone will be interested in my story and what I’ve written thus far. I’m looking forward to reading so many new stories and meeting fellow writers!

A year after the debacle with Vengeance and her brother's near-death, Aria Wiseman finally has a moment to relax among friends with a night of karaoke and games.
"Aria."
Kent's cool voice filters through Aria's busy thoughts, cutting through in that usual way he has of grounding her, of bringing her back to reality. He entwines his fingers with hers, hands cold to the touch—as usual—and kisses her temple, taking a spot standing next to her by the kitchen counter.
She'd stolen a seat on the counter a few minutes ago, when the shouting over who got to sing what next got a little too loud. Gray was insisting on singing ABBA, and while everyone thought his enthusiasm was admirable, his talent is anything but. Aria left right before Nick lunged to wrestle the mic away from him.
Not that Nick is any better of a singer.
