finally got time to properly read your reply (thanks for taking your time, i love your brain rots🫂) your insight is so true omg, clearly yun had been something else this new year and im loving it.

while it's true that most of the time, idols are heavily draw in to the fan service part of their job, it's also true that some of their actual personality behind doors is bound to bleed in. while i don't necessarily belive yunho is 100% fanservice driven, his content is, and that's where real yunho actually plays a huge part.

boyfriend pictures, the dates he usually goes on with the rest of the members and the photos he uploads of said dates (not only his face, but the scenery as well as pics with the other members too) appeals to all of us. we also know too that his aries is HEAVY on him when it comes to his fans. while he's not "in your face" he's made it clear time and time again that hotteoks are his and his only. and what you mentioned about him being a little jealous of other members being mentioned in his lives, it's clear that the boldness of that video has something to do with that as well.

im not trying to place yunho in a box, nor imply something he clearly isn't, but actions speak for themselves and our man has clearly been speaking with his content lately.

great thoughts on this too - i completely agree that it’s a blend of fan service and real person because how could it not be. it’s like how at our jobs we put on a certain persona but it’s not *not* us in some ways, but everyone has different levels of authenticity they’re comfortable with in different settings with different audiences.

i will say when it comes to fanservice i’m fairly cynical. as someone who’s been in the corporate world for over ten years (blech this made me feel old and lame), something i know with confidence is that their contracts are strict and wildly stipulated by the company, it’s just how these things work. so it would not surprise me in the least if they had contracted goals or quotas around different types of fanservice such as like…. number of times they communicate via fromm per month or number of social media posts, even number of times they go live on toqtok etc. That being said….. just because I’m cynical about that, doesn’t mean I’m cynical about the way the boys engage with those quotas and goals.

I think it’s obvious that some members are more communicative with fans vs others, some members are more clear with ‘boyfriend’ boundaries than others (*cough* *cough* san and mingi) but they still do the fan engagement because i’m sure they like it, but it’s also part of their job. they’re just at a point in their careers and probably in their own self confidence and self worth that they know what they will and won’t engage with. I like to think Yunho is the same, he’s a convicted person with clear ethics, so if he’s posting content that’s really boyfriend-y and coming on lives all the time and on fromm a couple times a week….. I truly believe it’s because it’s a part of his job that he enjoys doing and so he does more of it. That’s kind of why I describe him as more “persona-less” etc., I seriously just think he’s this guy and he’s showing us that part of himself. Does it hit two birds with one stone contractually and for the fans, sure, but no one’s holding a gun to his head to do this kind of content (at least at this point in their careers) and that’s nice to know.

I also think as far as his dedication to hotteoks……… this is where the parasocial line gets blurry so I want to be super clear about how I feel. Not at all to disagree with you, but as a fic writer who writes self-insert I feel like it’s important to represent how I really feel about these parasocial connections that frankly I’m aware that my fic is contributing to. So on that note: I think Yunho loves hotteoks and is dedicated to hotteoks in the sense that he feels grateful to us, feels loved by us, feels accepted and encouraged by us, and he’s a kind person who understands the weight of holding all of those people’s expectations and hopes and happiness. I think two years ago it appeared he was going through a tougher time but wasn’t really sharing, but in the past year he’s been honest about the pressure of being an idol and being a person that is “responsible” for fans happiness, and instead of letting that pressure crush him he’s come out with more love, more joy, and found more ways to support his fans. However - I do think it’s important to understand that there’s a difference between THAT and a romantic connection or commitment to a partner. I don’t think you meant that in what you said, but I do think I see Atiny sometimes describe “dedication” to fans as all encompassing and meaning they aren’t dating/seeking romantic connection, so I feel responsible for saying it as a fic writer.

I write self insert fic knowing that it will probably strengthen a parasocial connections between people and Yunho, hell, it’s probably strengthened my own parasocial connection to him. BUT I think if we’re responsible consumers of media, responsible fans of a famous person, that we will always remember those boundaries are real and exist for good reason. Yunho is so dear to me for so many reasons, but despite how genuine I believe him to be and how much analysis I do….. ultimately, I don’t know him. I’ll never know him, and at this point as a writer he’s become a character for me. I just want to be sure everyone knows where I stand as a writer and ‘yunho analyzer’ lol - I’m delulu ofc, but not like that.

I believe that we can see him as an idol and trust his authenticity with engaging with fans, but not allow that to become a twisted conception of him, this leads to fans crossing boundaries they haven’t been giving permission to, and assuming familiarity they don’t have. The parasocial element of kpop is a dangerous one for that reason, so I just wanted to add these thoughts to my original analysis, especially since you noted his dedication to hotteoks as “one and only” - I totally know what you mean there, 100%, but I don’t know that everyone does and I work hard to have delulu fun in this fandom while at the same time trying to keep everyone level headed about all the parasocial stuff.

I’m breaking out of the lavish fanfic-esque aspects of this ship because it would be a colossal mistake if I didn’t address how good your visuals look together, siren adjacent. So far I think my draft is pretty strong so far but I'm noticing some big flaws and I'm gonna ramble about it

I mentioned in a post yesterday(?) kind of that when I shift perspective, I like to shape the narration style to really help the reader understand how each character thinks. But as I'm going into chapter four and the first actual chapter from Arsioly's perspective, I'm realizing that his style is far more distinct from everyone else's than the other three are from each other.

Because my guy is like a fuckin psycho and he's all like 'will death hold me like water' and reminiscing about killing a guy and barkbarkbark

As of right now the way I'm planning to make Virava's voice more distinct is by making her see things more artistically because she really wants to be an artist even though she doesn't have the materials

For Sibatol I'm not quite sure but I think I'm just going to give him more internal monologue? Because this bitch doesn't say anything he means. He's just a traumatized kid inside but his survival has depended on being appealing to others for so long that he just can't turn the persona off

But I'm concerned about Visralion kind of? I dunno I guess part of me wants to make one of his characteristics be that he thinks far more of other people than he does himself and then part of his arc can be when Ari confesses to him and he's like wait.. i don't really want to be with him right now Will it be too late if I do that? Will people already have written him off as like just a boring love interest for Arsioly to obsess over or will they realize once that scene happens that I did that intentionally?

Spoilers under the cut and also me trying to ffigure out if i have some internal bias I don't see or if I'm just overanalyzing

I'm also worried about Virava and Visralion's agency in the story. Arsioly has the most agency because he's hugely ambitious and just wants more. Among other things he plans the attack on Nyazhchau which literally tips the scale of the war and cements both his fame/legacy and the future of the Rahaithian Army (I finally found a permanent name for the rebels). I genuinely think that if he did not exist then the RA wouldn't win and Kristalya would remain whole for longer.

Sibatol also has a fair bit of agency, he's the one that saves Arsioly from Nyazhchau, and he's also the one that recovers the negotions when Arsioly starts fucking up

Now something I've noticed is that the two characters that have the most agency are the two white characters out of the four MCs. I didn't do this on purpose obviously but I'm wondering if it's an internal bias thing.

I do have my reasons for most of their designs. Arsioly and Visralion are quite different in color for character design reasons and I do really like that character design trope where it's like opposites and they're gay for eahc other idk. I could theoretically switch them and give Arsioly the darker color scheme and Visralion the lighter one but idk then that makes the two POCs the two more violently inclined characters in the group and I don't like that either.

Virava is black as a reference to the black trans women that were part of the stonewall riots, and if I make Sibatol black as well, that makes the three MCs that came from poverty all black and the one character that came from a rich family white. I could switch Virava's and Sibatol's role but I have weird feelings about making the only trans character the one that's very promiscuous.

Idk that's not the point I just need more agency for Visralion and Virava. I can make it so Visralion has a more subtle sort of agency where he supports his friends and is kind of the 'glue' of the team, plus he's the only one of them that's good at comfort. He also has his moment where he makes the call that they're keeping Estera and his moment where he rejects Arsioly because he sees that man is not ready for a relationship.

For Virava though I'm really not sure? I'm pretty sure that when the Nyazhchau situation happens she's going to be the one that goes, "no, we're going to try again, Arsioly could still be alive and we could rescue him and even if he's no he wouldn't just want us to give up." I think she's also gonna have some nice moments with Estera but I just feel like there needs to be more.... I'm going to look for opportunities while I'm writing to give her some more agency I just needed to talk about this and get the words out there

So, me and my friends like to shoot the shit a lot with funny scenarios for games, even if I don't draw/write anything about them, and one of my more recent favorites is the Investigation Team and English (obviously ignoring the localization and going with the whole thing that they are, in fact, Japanese)

All of it under cut to not crowd the dash

So, Yu more or less learns English from Mr. Kondo and reading, mostly reading. Me and my friends considered that, because of that, Yu would have a fairly "non-descript" American accent. This is because he's fairly conversational, and even can do translation work as a side job and seems to generally understand uncommon phrases and such. I know in Europe that children are typically taught "British English", but at least in the localization, Mr. Kondo mentions he knows English from having been in America for a couple weeks, so that's just how Yu learns. (Which is still funny that, at least in the localization, even if Yu doesn't pick up the English book and you go along with Yosuke's Terrible Idea of Operation Babe Hunt, he's apparently conversational in Spanish. But I think it's English in Japan)

Naoto is rumored to be half-British. Now, this could mean almost anything for the accent. The "British" might mean "English", which would give Naoto a more classic "Londoner" accent, but England itself has a LOT of accents. Could be anything from South London, to Liverpudlian, to Yorkshire. Any of which would be both fitting and hilarious. But, taking that into account that Naoto is half-"British", it could also mean Naoto has a Scottish or even Welsh accent, which are even funnier. These are rumors in game, but still it's funny that Naoto's accent would be vastly different from the rest of the team if it's true.

Rise canonically complains about learning English, so I have a feeling she wouldn't have much of a discernable accent and sucks at speaking it. Kanji, Yukiko, and Chie are probably also not very adept at it, but I don't recall if they ever bring it up. (Chie is known to be bad in school In General, and is failing at least two classes, but I think we know one is History. Yukiko meanwhile is really Good in school but she probably doesn't speak much English herself aside from sorta understanding it for Business). I don't think Teddie knows anything besides Japanese either.

Now, the funniest thing we brought up.

Yosuke is canonically SUPER into Western Culture. He listens to a lot of American music, he loves the in-universe equivalent of Terminator, etc. There's not too much evidence he's into video games, but it wouldn't be far-fetched to be into video games, especially at the time point we're talking about (there is some promo art from Arena, but we're taking that with a grain of salt). Particularly, we joked that Yosuke would be super into PC games, and would try to learn English via those. The problem is that the "best" servers for him to hit up with primarily be... Australian. (PSO2 would probably still be in JP servers but he'd find someone who wants to learn Japanese).

Like, just imagine Yu practicing his English with Naoto, and for the most part is intelligible because his accent isn't that bad, but then Yosuke also asks for help, and has the absolutely most fucking weird-ass accent this side of Tokyo. Naoto is just dumbfounded while Yu would probably confused, or impressed (mostly because Yosuke is Very Polite in Japanese, but learning English from gamers, especially Australians, is probably going to sound VERY crass)
