my only criticism right now is that they cut so many of my fave lines and moments. so many important moments, stuff that really make ari’s character, and show his relationship with people around him. i get that they had to cut it bc it’s a movie but in my ideal world director’s cut is a 5 hour long movie that includes ari’s narration
#incomplete list of scenes i wanted to see:#ari’s dad taking care of him when sick#dante giving ari a shower#boys like me belong in the rain#the problem with my life is that it was someone else’s idea#the original context for you can discover all the secrets of the universe in someone’s hand#ari looking up inscrutable#ari looking up melancholy and it resonates#14 year old me was like he just like me fr#words have more meaning when they’re inside u#i’m paraphrasing bc i read it Not In English#ari and dante#aristotle and dante movie#ari and dante movie#aristotle and dante discover the secrets of the universe

So Ari used to comfort us when you BF had left. So when our ex bf is into and we accidently run into them saw the bar or gas station and were in qris car and tty the whole duck down thing or hiding out of site thing how does Ari react and say we see him another time days later at the bar with Ari within king he had have left so our guard was down but nope what does Ari do? We all know he's territorial as hell with us especially with how we were hurt the first time
Ah yes, Philip. Warnings for language and no* editing. WC 1.8k (which is apparently my magic number...)
Run In, a Bedrock and Blueprints drabble long drabble tale
Not that long after you insist Ari moves in, you two are out getting groceries at the local supermarket. You normally divide the list in chunks by area of the store, so you're rounding a tall-shelved aisle when WHAM! It's Philip, your ex and the reason you know Ari, right in your face.
Maybe three sentences total are spoken. Your stomach is so knotted up in shock and a kind of hot fear that you're not entirely sure what you say, but Phil's face is placid enough. The words must cause no offense because he waves and walks away without incident.
You're sweating bullets, glancing over your shoulder every ten feet down the refrigerated section. You don't need the bag of frozen french fries, but sticking your head in the cold storage to carefully check the label is a welcome reprieve.
Ari meets you at the self-check-out as planned, a soft smile tucking the seam of his bread together when he's caught thumbing through the candy. The man likes snacks, sweet or savory; he just can't help it.
"Grabbed some extra to make your favorite tonight. You'll have plenty for lunch tomorrow, too," he adds casually, starting to scan all the gathered things. "We didn't need more leftover containers, did we? Can't remember if we ever found enough lids for the red ones."
Ari doesn't notice you constantly scanning the area behind you.
"Hey," he interrupts your panicking brain, "you got the coupons for this?"
"Yeah," you bluster, quickly digging in your purse for the little stack of papers. "Yeah, here."
You think it's over and start to breathe easier in the open air outside, loading the bags into the truck bed and sliding onto the leather seat.
Ari turns on the car and frowns. "Better fill up on gas while we're out."
"Okay," you chirp absently. Any distance from the store is still distance, or so you think until you see Philip right there at the next pump.
You flatten yourself so fast onto that seat that it squeaks and you bounce slightly. Ari's already gotten out of the car, and if he's facing the tank, then he's also facing away from Philip. He might not notice a thing.
But if he's facing the pump...
"Levinson?!"
Oh, shit, Ari, don't be stupid. Don't be stupid. Don't mention me. Please.
Your cheek is suctioned to the leather you're so squished down.
Ari must have walked over to Philip because all you hear are deep, muffled voices and three words:
"Saw her..."
"...inside?"
The mumbling changes in pitch and volume a few more times, a much longer conversation than you had with Philip minutes ago, but after a bit, the pump catches full, and you hear Ari close the cap.
He opens the driver's side door but keeps looking past the hood.
"See ya around," Ari calls back.
"Hope so, Levs," comes the far-off reply.
Ari jumps in and starts the truck, looking both ways like he's driving completely normal, alone, like there isn't a crazy woman pancaked on his seat. After pulling out of the parking lot, he sighs.
"I assume you were gonna tell me you saw him eventually."
Gently raising yourself upright, you rub at your arm.
"He surprised me--"
"--yeah," Ari scoffs, "me, too."
"--and I...I didn't know what to say."
He stays quiet, artfully navigating familiar streets and thinking, but his expression is inscrutable.
"You think I knew what to say? Kid, he abandoned you. He never even apologized, and now I had to see him as your boyfriend and be blindsided that you'd already talked?!"
"We didn't talk, Ari. I said maybe two things to him. Pleasantries. I can't even remember because he just--" you slap your hands together "--was there."
Ari huffs, adjusting his grip on the steering wheel with white knuckles. "I know," he whispers. "I get it. I'm sure it's worse for you than for me, but... I want to throttle the guy."
"He was your friend, too, Ar--"
"You were a better friend than Phil ever was," he bursts. "Ya know, after the first time he brought you out, we thought you were out of his league. Like you were too nice and quiet and put together. Then you hung out a few more times, and José finally made a joke that you were too cool for him. Philip was a loser compared to you. All of us thought you were too good for him full stop."
Ari drops one hand from the wheel and searches for yours, weaving your fingers together. "That was before he even left...the first time."
You're stunned.
"Then Phil was gone and so were you," he continues, squeezing your hand, "but we only missed you." Ari shrugs. "Somebody had to drive you back to the bar so we could hang out."
"And you drew the short straw," you mutter.
"There were no straws. I volunteered."
All this time, you thought that Ari, José, and Dimitri used to tolerate you out of loyalty to Philip. You thought maybe Philip had told them to watch out for you while he was deployed, and you knew that changed eventually. You couldn't pinpoint the shift though; there was no moment where one or more of them said "you're our friend now, not Phil's girl," but you did know they at least pitied you when Philip left for good. After all, they were mourning the loss of their friend, too, right?
It took years to feel like Ari wasn't just driving you around out of obligation--partly because he always grumbled about being your 'chauffeur'--but here he is telling you they'd all have chosen you over Philip, possibly even if Philip never left but simply moved on from you. The comfort of that thought radiates through you like the warmth from Ari's hand in yours.
Apart from the odd remark or two, Philip is forgotten again after that night. You have so much history beyond him and a future without him.
Two and a half weeks later, of course, you're not expecting to see Philip sidle up to your table with the boys at the bar--the bar, the original haunt that you inherited in the divorce essentially--and José and Dimitri are duly surprised as well.
"Where the hell you been, brother?"
"They ain't got phones out there?"
Philip is bashful, remorseful in a way that seems more like him before his first deployment, and it is genuinely nice to see. You keep silent anyway, unable to think of something overtly nice or generic to say.
Ari's arm is around your shoulders as it usually is in this booth, but then his hand squeezes your shoulder, and he leans unnecessarily close to your ear.
"Can you scoot to let me out, baby," he asks, voice low and deep. "I'll get us another round."
Before you can move, Ari plants a quick kiss on your neck, knowing full well that his beard tickles right there, and makes you shiver.
After he's standing, Phil's face is questioning, eyes wide, but he doesn't say anything. Instead, Ari taps his shoulder.
He ticks his head toward Patrick behind the bar. "Need a beer, buddy? I'm buying."
Phil snorts and follows.
"I'll be damned. Ari Levinson offering to pay for a drink? You sure changed."
"It's been a long eight and a half years," Ari groans, flagging down Patrick and ordering.
It takes more time for the drinks to arrive than it takes Phil to start in, glancing conspicuously over at the booth.
"What'd you do, Ari? Jump right into my place? Did my plane even touchdown before you went for her?"
"I went to tell her you left. There's a difference."
"Never thought of you as a sloppy seconds guy. Did your dick happen to fall in--"
"Finish that fucking sentence if you'd like to be toothless," Ari growls, making a point to plaster a smile on his face since you can likely see them in profile from here.
"I'm just saying I wouldn't want to be a rebound."
"No, Phil, what you should want to be is a man, but instead, you were a piece of shit." Ari doesn't want to give him the satisfaction of knowing that it took almost the entirety of those eight and a half years to thoroughly move on from the people Phil left behind, but he's still pissed.
"Hell, I was a piece of shit, too, for years, but I stayed when I could. I was also a piece of shit who noticed that that girl is worth way more than yours--or my--ego, so if you so much as blink in a way that makes her uncomfortable--" he throws a glance to the exit "--I will hand you your ass outside and make you eat dirt. We clear?"
"Levs, why are you being like this? Man, you never cared about chicks this much."
"You wanna know what changed me," Ari hisses, pointing over at the booth, uncaring if any of you are watching, fake smile long gone. "That changed me. She changed me. She's the type of woman worth changing for."
Patrick drops off the drinks and slides the money off the counter, ignoring any tension between the two men.
"I did change," Philip mumbles, "and she never understood--"
"You did not fucking try," Ari nearly spits in rage but pets a hand down his beard again for composure. He sucks on his teeth, pondering what to say next. "Look, I knew you for a long time, and we were the same. We didn't care. We didn't give a fuck about putting in the effort. And because we didn't give a fuck, no one should have given a fuck about us. She did, and you walked away from that. You are an asshole. You are not welcome here. She is. She always will be.
"Do you understand that?" Ari looks Phil dead in the eyes and holds that gaze with militant ferocity.
"Yeah, man."
Ari relaxes, softening his look and casually clinking his beer bottle to Philip's. "Good. Then get the fuck out of this bar," he says flatly.
Ari heads back to the booth alone, winking as he hands you your drink and motions to scoot back in beside you. Phil hangs around at the bartop just long enough to guzzle his beer and leaves.
José is the first to ask, "what happened there?"
"You know Phil." Ari takes a long pull from his bottle and then stretches back to have his arm over you. "He realized he was in the wrong place. Shame he couldn't stick around."
"Ah, well," Dimitri muses, "we're better off without him."
"Yeah," you say softly, the first word out of your mouth since Phil showed up.
Ari leans over to kiss your temple, his thumb running back and forth across your shoulder. He straightens and picks his beer back up.
"So we're thinking of having a housewarming party. You guys in?"
I don't see Ari as a big spectacle guy, but I do think he'd put his fucking foot down when it came to shit-talking the kid. Honestly, I imagine if Philip showed up before you and Ari got together, Ari would still have been that protective simply because you mean a lot to him. However, he's hyper-aware of not embarrassing you, so this is as confrontational as I can picture him. Still quite *swoon* if I do say so myself, but he's still subtle.
Thank you for reading! Hope you are enjoying this story so far.

(SFW) Excerpt from The Last Time Ch. 6
*This chapter is NSFW. If you don't like adult scenes, feel free to skip this one. There is no story advances in this chapter*
Following Natsu's confession of love, the two spend the night exploring each other. The next morning is spent lazily together, enjoying their new activities.
Lucy stood slowly and stretched before grabbing one of their discarded shirts and pulling it on to cover her nudity. Pulling a pair of panties on, she made her way into the kitchen and filled the kettle, still enjoying her memories. As she turned on the stove, a bright golden light flashed from her bedroom and Lucy cursed under her breath.
A moment later her most intrusive spirit stepped into view, running a hand through his messy orange hair. “Lucy, Natsu is naked in your bed.”
She rested her elbows on the counter and buried her face in her hands. “Good morning Loke,” she said tiredly.
“Why is there a naked dragon slayer in your bed?” His eyes narrowed as he looked her over. Lucy turned to him and glared.
“What do you want, Loke?” she asked with a hint of irritation.
He ignored her question, crossing his arms over his chest. “I came to see if you need help with work today. Lucy, why are wearing nothing but the naked dragon’s shirt?”
Lucy rolled her eyes and returned to making tea and pulling out ingredients for breakfast. “Did you wake him up?” Loke came to stand beside her, leaning against the counter and staring at her with an inscrutable look. He shook his head after a moment. “Good. Then you can help me make breakfast and I will tell you about it.” Loke made a sound of annoyance but took off his suit jacket and began unbuttoning his sleeves and rolling them up.
As she cracked eggs into a large bowl for him, she recounted the tale of Natsu’s return and a very simplified version of their conversation. Loke listened silently as he assisted her in cooking but cut his eyes to the side when she finished.
“None of that answers why you are only wearing the naked dragon’s shirt.”
“Would you move on? What’s wrong, are you jealous?” she teased lightly. Loke set aside the pan and turned to her, his face serious.
“No…. I just don’t want you getting hurt all over again, Princess,” he sighed. Lucy smiled and patted his arm. Despite Loke’s tendency to overstep boundaries of privacy and personal space, he really did care for her deeply. All of her spirits did, and it always made her heart swell when she thought about it. She let out a soft squeak as she was pulled into Loke’s arms for a hug.
“Loke….You’re burning the eggs,” she mumbled against his chest. She felt his head lift and he seemed to be looking at something behind her that made his arms tighten around her. She squirmed, trying to work her way out.
“Let her go, lover boy.” Lucy stilled at the sound of Natsu’s rough voice. His words were light, but his tone was controlled and had an edge to it.
“To you?” Loke challenged, drawing a long growl from Natsu. Lucy shoved against him. “Stop that right now, both of you. Loke, let me go or I’ll call Aries.”
Loke snickered. “You don’t have your keys, Princess.” Even so, he released her and stepped away, hands raised in surrender as he turned back to the stove. Lucy clicked her tongue in annoyance and crossed the room to stomp back into her bedroom.
She opened her dresser and grabbed a skirt and shirt. Natsu followed her into the room and watched her. “Why is he here?”
“You know very well that I can’t keep him from showing up when and where he wants,” she snapped, her voice sharp with irritation. She pulled his shirt over her head and threw it at him. He caught it with a grin and watched her with a longing look on his face. His hand twitched and he started to reach for her bare skin.
“You keep your hands to yourself Natsu. Loke already thinks things went a lot farther than they did. I don’t need you in here making it worse while he’s out there listening.” She pulled on her skirt and glared at him.
Natsu smiled with false innocence, then stroked her cheek gently. “He thinks? You didn’t tell him?”
“Of course not! He just showed up and found you naked in my bed and me wearing nothing but your shirt and my underwear. He jumped to conclusions and I’m not in the mood to deal with it.” She started toward the kitchen again, but Natsu caught her hand.
“Wait, please.” She looked back at him. “I’m sorry. I’ll behave, I promise. Just let me kiss you before we go back out there.” He pouted dramatically at her, and she failed to stifle her giggle.
“Fine, but you had better keep that growling under control. No jealousy around Loke of all people. You know he just wants to get a rise out of you.” He nodded and bent his head to hers for a sweet kiss.
“Breakfast is ready Princess,” Loke called out from the kitchen. When the two of them returned to the kitchen, the table was set with food and Loke was gone. “Solves that problem,” Natsu growled happily, attacking the food.

Charlotte and Fitzwilliam have been an item for quite a while (after earlier brief romances with William and Jane Bennet, respectively), but Fitzwilliam’s autonomous proposal still took me and Charlotte by surprise (so much that I didn’t get a shot of it). To Caroline, however, it seems to have been the end of the world, although why I have no idea, as she’s never shown any interest in him before!
Charles also has romance on his mind, with Lizzy and Jane Bennet’s youngest sister, Lydia Bennet. On their very first date, when he fell hopelessly in love with her, she broke his heart by flirting with someone else right under his nose! Still smitten, he’s since forgiven her, but I sense more trouble ahead...
William is having far less fun.
This wasn’t quite the ‘private study’ I had in mind when I provided the students with this quiet, secluded, music room... The young woman on the wall, however, does not seem to disapprove.
That’s more like it, Lizzy!

netflix shadow and bone s1 e5 pt3: peak darklina
the first kiss scene Alina is so beautiful Her little smile as she picks up his kefta after he hears him call out for Ivan to get it like ooh I'm gonna play a little trick on Alek Her making him smile with a joke that's not even funny The tentativeness of it all, them tiptoeing around each other, testing the boundaries Him being taken aback by her offering to help him put on his kefta but still wanting her to and immediately resorting to business voice asking questions about official sun summoner stuff And putting on his serious business face him trying to explain away the gloves by calling them a safeguard, not a sign of him not trusting her abilities the face he makes after saying spectacle either depicting his distaste for the showiness of the event or depicting his embarrassment at how he phrased the sentence, like what the fuck did I just say (more likely the first one) Her quickly turning around and walking away after the eye contact makes her realise how close they are and him pulling a puzzled look as she does so Just. Just how adorable the energy is. Both of them making jokes to diffuse the tension, her gripping the table to maybe steady or calm herself, the looks they give to each other as if engaged in a delicate dance; god-like Him straight up just blinking and looking down and gulping as she says 'we can offer Grisha and Ravkans hope' (could be multiple things he's thinking at this point, and all of them interest me) 'That means a lot to me, Alina.' *her turning to look at his face* 'You mean a lot...' *her immediately lowering her gaze and tracing where her mal scar used to be lmao* 'to everyone' *her raising her gaze to him again* The music swelling as she walks up to him, her barely grazing her fingers against his collar, his eyes looking across hers as if in disbelief, her looking at his lips, and then her closing the gap between them. Him being a little stiff, indubitably from being shocked, and yet giving into it almost instinctively as if he can't help it. The violin coming in powerfully yet softly to emphasize the tenderness of it all. This thing has been made with so much love and I can't contain myself about it. Him opening his eyes half a second after Alina, almost as if waking up from a dream and then, following a relaxing of his facial muscles as he clearly regains his composure, immediately looking inscrutable. Her doubting herself, not losing eye contact as he stands up from the desk, but her sudden fear, regret, and embarrassment clear on her face. Her sides of her lips slowly rising giving way his own self mirroring her and breaking into smile and composing himself and breaking into smile again before saying 'Not many people surprise me, Miss Starkov'. Her now fully breaking out into a smile, her face a picture of unguarded joy, she looks down only to have his gaze follow her face. Both of them giddy in the other's presence and the audience can feel it. It feels like he is leaning in for another one when the sound of the door opening makes them spring apart, regaining their composures and standing at a respectable distance from each other. Her poorly suppressing a smile, him looking at her visibly, her mimicking him with a glance out of her periphery, causing her to give in to her smile completely. Him looking visibly distracted as he attempts to pay attention to whoever came into the room. the Jesper of it all Jesper the mega idiot not being able to control his face from doing a thing as he realises the person who caught him where he wasn't supposed to be is the same person he was making sexy eyes at before and yet regaining his composure in record time The poor stable hand actually being interested in Jesper and being adorable with Jesper just being like charm itself Can you believe looking at Jesper Llewellyn Fahey in the flesh and having him make sexy eyes at you and then forgetting about it? Because I simply cannot. The line about light role play? Felt a little not right. GO OFF STABLE HAND WHO PUSHED JESPER AGAINST A WALL AND KISSED HIM, HE LITERALLY SAID IM POPPING OFF AND
THEN HE DID Zoya Zoya saying fuck off to the random racist comment made by one of the guests, but she was racist to Alina herself? (I mean South Asian-East Asian hate is not uncommon so idk) David omg the cutie pie adjusting his hair at the fete HEARTRENDER FUCKING HUSBANDS Fedyor insisting on Ivan eating the sweet and Ivan's solemn head shake like no babe im on a diet and Fedyor being like heart eyes please eat the sweet my love and then Fedyor holding Ivan's face to make him nibble off a corner and Ivan's face splitting into a reluctant grin Kaz the actor Seeing Kaz the actor instead of Kaz the master of trickery and plans is an interesting thing Kanej being Kanej cute banter interaction, would recommend, 10/10 hints at Arken being sus The look Kaz gives Arken when Arken leaves, I really should have known, I was simply being a clown Darkling and the dumb royalty We love the Darkling suppressing his anger at these otkazat'sya rulers dissing the grisha and the little palace Alina's entrance The soft hum that we hear when Alina enters but we don't see her face Alina's adorable peeking The Darkling's expression changing despite being done af with these mfers and instantaneously on catching a glimpse of Alina, she really has that power huh He really made it look like his pupils dilated and who knows maybe they did Him trying to call her out for not following protocol but him melting and saying 'you look lovely, by the way' Her saying 'you look like you needed saving' I can't breathe you're so cool ballroom at the little palace I must confess I expected the ballroom of the winter fete to be bigger
GENYADAVID looking at each other and pretending not to look at each other, my fucking heart Kanej being Kanej Kaz implying they're gonna try to trick the people into thinking that the fake sun summoner is real and Inej being done with his shit Alina's demonstration HER NAME IS ALINA STARKOV yes mfer The way people back away as he steps, god the power of this man Inej looking at Kaz omfg Okay him clapping the darkness into the room was cool af I love the shadow summoning effects so fucking much The first bit of light that Alina summons lighting up the gold parts of her black kefta, absolute perfection Alina just enjoying her power and then looking to Alek, his lips parting when she does Aw Fedyor looking at Ivan in a I told you she could do it way Genya and Fedyor exchanging glances as Alina besties THE CROWD SAYING SANKTA ALINA INEJ SAYING SANKTA ALINA WITH HALF A TEAR IN HER EYE DAMN THIS IS POWERFUL Jesper and Dima IMMEDIATELY TRANSITIONING TO JESPER SAYING 'SAINTS' AS A NAKED STABLE BOY GETS OFF OF HIM AGAHSJSJSJKS I CAN'T IM CACKLING AT THE AUDACITY OF THIS SHOW HOW ARE THEY SO PERFECT (his name's dima btw) Poor fucking Dima getting frightening orders from his superior as his hookup sneaks out with horses that are definitely not his Arken the little shit Ah Arken why'd you have to go and do this I was actually amused by you before the malyen factor omg Mal's here and someone saw him getting here apparat and faith? The apparat literally jumping out of the palace walls at Alina lol man I do love the religion angle of this universe and it would have been so fucking cool if it were explored a bit better ew apparat that grab was very violent mal/darkling interaction the darkling's reaction at his recognition of mal was so funny ah yes my arch nemesis, the other angle of this teen immortal love triangle how utterly delightful someone explain the darkling's 'are you alright' to mal, is it because Alina was worried sick, is it mind games, is it curiosity, what is it Im still don't know how to feel with them attaching a literal symbol to the sun summoner, to Alina's dreams and to the stag itself 'not until I see Alina' THE LOYAL HIMBO ENERGY IN THIS ONE ISTFG I have never known nose acting until I saw Ben Barnes, he uses his nose in his acting and it is absolutely wonderful; case in point, the 'i beg your pardon' to mal with the rage making his voice shake okay but why is every mal darkling interaction like, everything the prompt answer our baby mal gives and the satisfaction it brings to his face, fucking amazing the darkling being literally struck by this, his mouth literally agape, king this is a 20 year old lmao Baghra! OMG WE GOT A GLIMPSE OF BAGHRA'S FIRE YES Genya supremacy Genya beating Arken up let's fucking go Marie's plot influence and Racism? Best Films of 2019 (So Far)
It’s that time of year again! As most of my followers probably know, I’m an avid cinema-goer beyond Star Wars. I also quite enjoy making lists, so what’s better than a combo of the two? Below, I run down my top 10 films of 2019 so far - please note that this list is based on UK cinema release dates, so some of these films were 2018 releases elsewhere.
What are your favourites so far from this year? Let me know in replies/asks!
Honourable mentions: Toy Story 4, Long Shot, Aladdin, Alita: Battle Angel & The Kid Who Would Be King
1. The Favourite, dir. Yorgos Lanthimos
This completely wowed me - it features a trio of magnificently compelling female characters (played by Olivia Colman, Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone) operating at the court of Queen Anne (Colman is Anne, Weisz and Stone are courtiers), and is focused solely on the shifting sands of the power dynamics between them. The script is savage without sacrificing poignancy, witty without ceasing to be genuine. And while I’ve seen some react to this film as a comedy (and it certainly has laughs, most of which are closely tied to shock), for me it was very clearly a drama about the inscrutable and complicated relationships that exist between women. Specifically, it is about how those relationships run the gamut from sincere affinity to ruthless manipulation. This is an amazing movie, and it also has the best use of an Elton John song in 2019 (sorry, Rocketman!).
2. Midsommar, dir. Ari Aster
I went into this film with reservations, since I wasn’t a huge fan of Hereditary (by the same director), which I found to have extraordinary moments but iffy execution overall. This movie, however, wowed me, and I am still uncertain as to whether this or The Favourite is my top film of 2019 so far (fortunately, this gives me a good excuse to watch Midsommar three or four times in cinemas). While marketed as a freaky cult horror film, the director has described it as a fairy tale, which is the level on which is spoke to me. Midsommar follows Dani (an incredible Florence Pugh), a young woman who has suffered a terrible loss, as she travels with her boyfriend and his friends to a pagan festival in the Swedish countryside. Dani is painfully isolated, and her grief is hers to shoulder alone since her boyfriend is un-receptive and distinctly unprepared to help her. Over the course of the film, destruction and creation are conflated in ways that are frequently beautiful and horrific at the same time - this film spoke to me on a profound level, and the way it ended gave me a sense of incredible catharsis. This won’t be for everyone, for I found it to be a deeply special film and I can’t recommend it enough.
3. One Cut of the Dead, dir. Shinichirou Ueda
While I went into The Favourite with high expectations given the talent involved, I went into this with no expectations whatsoever - and what a treat it was! One Cut of the Dead is easily one of the funniest movies I’ve seen in ears, taking what initially seems like a trite concept (a crew is filming a zombie movie at a desolate location ... only to discover that the zombies are real!) and twisting it in a truly ingenious way. The comedy is often of the broad variety, but it is consistently delightful and always manages to avoid becoming crass - the movie even has some really sweet family dynamics at the centre of it, which gives it some real emotional heft. The success of this film is heavily reliant on a major twist that occurs part-way through, so the best advice I can give you is to stay as far away from spoilers for this one as possible - go in blind, and you will be amply rewarded for your faith.
4. The Farewell, dir. Lulu Wang
I saw this following a wave of festival hype, so while I was excited I was also a bit apprehensive (since I have been burned by the aforementioned festival hype before). Thankfully, my doubts were blown away as this turned out to be just as wonderful as the early reviews had suggested. It’s a personal story about a young Asian-American woman (Awkwafina) struggling to reconcile her heritage with her current situation and values - specifically, she is tested when her grandmother is diagnosed with terminal cancer and the wider family make the decision to hide the truth from her. The Farewell does a fantastic job of generating empathy for all the different perspectives and positions in play, but it’s truly anchored by Awkwafina’s amazingly nuanced and tender performance - basically, anyone who’s ever loved a grandparent should leave this feeling incredibly moved and inspired. The themes of The Farewell are both specific to the Asian-American experience and general to anyone who has struggled with maintaining bonds over a vast distance, whether physical or cultural.
5. Booksmart, dir. Olivia Wilde
God, how I wish I’d had this movie as a teenager! While Booksmart has a cliched premise - two high-achieving teens decide to have one wild night before graduation - it tells the story in an incredibly charming and impressively creative way (I won’t spoil it, but let me just say this - that scene with the Barbies!). As someone who was an awkward nerd with no discernible social life in high school (as you Americans call it), I found this portrayal of that peculiar limbo period very sensitive and thoughtful - it doesn’t mock or shame its heroines for being studious, and it allows them to have limits and step back from situations that make them uncomfortable. It also serves as a beautifully honest portrait of a friendship, depicting the qualities that bring people together in friendship together in the first place, as well as the forces that can break people apart. This is a very accomplished debut from Wilde, and it makes me very excited to see where she goes next as a director.
6. A Private War, dir. Matthew Heineman
This was a very suspenseful and tightly focused film about an extraordinary woman, and the film soars on the strength of Rosamund Pike’s incredible performance as Marie Colvin. She provides piercing insights into the psyche of a person so driven to pursue truth and enact change that she loses all concern for her own wellbeing - it’s simultaneously a portrait of heroism and obsession, and it’s impressive for how it handles the ambiguity inherent in Colvin’s choices. She’s exceptionally brave, but the film is unflinching in depicting the costs of her bravery. It left me feeling inspired to learn more about Colvin’s life and work, and I still need to watch the documentary Under the Wire to get more insight into the real story behind the film.
7. Fighting With My Family, dir. Stephen Merchant
This is the year of Florence Pugh - she killed it in Midsommar, and she is just as fantastic here. If anything, Fighting With My Family and Midsommar make great complements as they serve as fantastic showcases for Pugh’s range as an actor. While her character in Midsommar is fragile and vulnerable, Fighting With My Family is a platform for her strength and comedic skill. As Paige, Pugh is instantly likable and compelling - I don’t give a damn about any form of wrestling, but this film (and Pugh specifically) did a fantastic job of drawing me in and making me root for Paige’s struggle to prove herself as a legitimate force in wrestling. This is a real underdog story, and Pugh did a wonderful job as the Cinderella of the WWE.
8. Apollo 11, dir. Todd Douglas Miller
My dad has always been crazy about the space program, but I hadn’t picked up the bug myself. That changed after I watched this extraordinary documentary, which brought the Apollo 11 mission to vivid life. The footage that’s used for this documentary is extraordinarily crisp, and some moments are vividly powerful - the crew getting into their spacesuits, the swirl of fire surrounding the moment of takeoff, and the journey of the spacecraft towards the moon. It left me feeling moved and touched by human potential, especially when you remember that this all happened 50 years ago when the available technologies were so fragile and primitive. I also loved how the footage was allowed to speak for itself, with no voiceover or exposition - it’s a must-see for anyone who’s ever looked up at the stars and wondered about reaching them.
9. High Life, dir. Claire Denis
This movie is second to only Midsommar in terms of how weird it is. I saw this in a Hungarian cinema while on holiday, which made for a disorientating experience in itself. While the meaning of the film is quite elusive and I’m sure that many people will find viewing it a uniquely frustrating experience, I appreciated how it created a hothouse environment that brought out some of the ugliest aspects of humanity. Robert Pattinson was great as what comes closest to amounting to our protagonist, though he is as inscrutable and inaccessible as the film itself. I can’t quite pin down why I liked this one so much, but I know I did and it made me want to seek out more of Claire Denis’ work.
10. Free Solo, dir. Jimmy Chin & Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi
It’s tragic that most people will only watch this documentary on a TV screen (or, so much worse, a laptop!). I was fortunate enough to see it in its full IMAX glory, and it’s rare to see any film - let alone a documentary - take such full advantage of the format. The woozy spectacle of this film is the real star, though the subject - mountain climber Alex Honnold - is also fascinating with his unnerving detachment from the magnitude of what he is setting out on. It is clearly a necessary detachment for him to be able to achieve what he achieves, but I appreciated how the filmmakers questioned it and explored its impact on his girlfriend. This is a compelling documentary, and is worth watching even if you’re not usually a fan of the genre.

“Reunion” part 2
Part 1 is here
THE CONVERSATION IN THE BASEMENT
UGH MY FEELINGS
Now first up, I hate that they retconned Ziva’s origin story at NCIS to make it so that Eli ordered Ziva to kill Ari to fool Gibbs or whatever. It’s such a disservice to Ziva and her story.
BUT.
I do like how Ziva handled it here, and it makes Eli even more evil, which is fine by me, because he is the worst. He is the guy who had Ari’s mother killed as payback without any regard for how it would affect his son, apparently, so, like, I have no trouble believing he would be fine ordering the hit on his own son, who was, to be fair, homicidal and in need of “neutralizing.”
Anyway.
What I mean is that this displayed so much of Ziva’s humanity, and what shapes the core of her character.
Gibbs is understandably angry, because that whole incident in “Kill Ari Part 2″ is what cemented their bond, which took them all through season 3 to “Hiatus” and beyond, and here he thinks that’s been shaken to its core, that it was all a lie, that the woman he came to think of as a surrogate daughter (and let’s be real, his relationship with Ziva is unlike any of the others’, even with Abby). Which in turn rocks Ziva, because the last thing she wants is for Gibbs to ever think she would be so callous and cruel.
And that’s what it comes down to: Ziva may act like she doesn’t care what people think of her, but she absolutely cares about Gibbs, and if he doesn’t love her, then I would bet she thinks no one can.
Her explanation is so practical and so Ziva, but also shows so much of her heart. Yes, her father ordered her to kill Ari, but she took the mission precisely to save him. Because until the very last second she didn’t believe that her brother -- HER BROTHER -- was capable of such cruelty, and she was going to do everything in her power to prove it, including saving his life so he could plead his case.
Ziva is ride or die with her loved ones, and every brief mention of Ari indicates that he was her world -- or at least she adored him. He wasn’t some long lost illegitimate sibling spoken of in hushed tones. She was as close to him as Tali, and obviously looked up to him, to the point where she believed everything out of his mouth, despite the clear red flags, because HE WAS HER BROTHER. To everyone else he was an asset, to her he was probably her protector and her idol. (See: Gibbs.)
So when she sensed an injustice against Ari? Of course she was going to try to straighten it all out. Surely as long as she kept him safe, they would be able to work together to prove his innocence. Not realizing the odds were stacked against her because a) Eli and b) Ari actually was a psychopath. (Just because Eli was right doesn’t make him right, you know what I mean?)
(Which it turn makes me even sadder for Ziva, because it’s like there wasn’t a single person, or at least a single male, in her life before NCIS who didn’t use her as a pawn.)
Stop for a second and think about what it must have been like growing up actually thinking you were nothing more than a chess piece for your father/country/whatever in their latest mission, and thinking that was totally normal? No wonder Ziva is so fucked up still — how can you build any kind of self-esteem when you are essentially an action figure to be disposed of at someone else’s convenience?
I digress.
So, Ziva agreed to be Ari’s handler not to eliminate him, but to save him. Which is who she is, and she will not apologize for it to Gibbs, because she absolutely believes she was right. “He was my brother, and you were nothing.” WHICH IS RIGHT. It doesn’t mean she was playing Gibbs — it’s that she loved her brother so wholeheartedly, and obviously she would protect him over a perfect stranger. Just like now, she would protect Gibbs at all costs too, and he wouldn’t expect anything different. And if it were Gibbs in the position of protecting his loved one, he would agree with her too.
And the conviction in her voice — the need for him to believe her — is so important. Because she doesn’t care if Mossad or her father believed she was capable of killing Ari, because she probably thinks as little of them as they do her. But she can’t stand the thought of Gibbs believing she could do that, because he would know what it would do to her, does know what it’s done to her every day since that happened.
“Eli is all but dead to me, and now the closest thing I have to a father believes— He was my brother.” That part ALWAYS gets me. This is what it comes down to: Gibbs has been more of a father to Ziva in 3 years than Eli had been her entire life. He’s never done anything to put her in jeopardy and has always put her well-being first, whereas Eli thought nothing of sending his daughter into a kamikaze mission for some stupid revenge on a faceless terrorist. I mean it doesn’t even come close, right? The show always jokes about Gibbs being the father figure of the group, but this is the first time anyone has said it out loud, and Ziva is admitting that Gibbs is that person in her life, and she cannot lose that. Because he is her port in the storm, in the sense that his protection and nurturing and love has fulfilled a need in Ziva that she’s never been able to fill in her life. She’s basically had no parental guidance, at least not since her mom died (whenever that was), and Gibbs offered that kind of sanctuary that anyone who is lucky enough to have loving parents knows. And she finally had that.
So now it’s hitting her that her “dad” thinks she’s just like Eli, and could easily dispose of her own brother for an inconsequential mission. And that hurts, more than any barb Abby or Leon or even Tony could throw her way. Because that would just confirm her own worst fears about herself, which would crush her. Even when everything is murky with Tony or even Eli, Gibbs has been her rock, and she’s facing the possibility that that may vanish, too, and it nearly breaks her.
Also breaking her? The fact that her brother is gone. As much as the show doesn’t really dwell on a lot of these emotional traumas, Ari has been one of the few that has actually come up consistently over the years for Ziva. Not enough for my liking, but enough that you always know how conflicted Ziva is about it. That she always has to reconcile her cherished memories of her siblings as a child to what happened to them as an adult. And more than that, that she is GRIEVING Ari, still. That pain has never gone away — not in her breakdown in Gibbs’ hospital room in “Hiatus,” not when she’s being questioned by Bashan in “Shalom,” not here. “He was my brother.” And now he is gone. And the pain is still raw.
Cote de Pablo does such a good job in this entire scene. Ziva’s heart is on her sleeve, and she’s trying to hold it together and say what she needs to say, be as practical as possible, but her emotions do get the best of her, because obviously she’s still in a delicate state herself, and this entire experience and its aftermath is stirring up all these unresolved issues and feelings she’s been burying for years. She pleads with Gibbs to believe her and forgive her and just love her the way she is, but she chokes when it comes to “he was my brother,” because deep down she’s still the girl grieving her brother, but she also can’t stand to think her “dad” would think so low of her. It’s painful and beautiful.
ALL THIS BEING SAID.
ZIVA NEEDS A HUG.
THE END OF THIS SCENE DEMANDS A HUG.
NOT A GIBBS INSCRUTABLE GLARE.
I mean I get it — Gibbs still isn’t sure what to believe and it’s a lot to take in — but goddamn Ziva is breaking and the girl has been through hell and back and SHE NEEDS A FUCKING HUG YOU GUYS.
Also back to my anger at the retcon: If Ziva was supposed to kill Ari, then why the insistence in the official report that Gibbs killed him? And why was Ziva so relieved that he kept her secret for so long when she moved to DC? IT’S BECAUSE IT DOESN’T MAKE SENSE WRITERS!!! There was actually no need for this retcon, ugh.
Anyway.
Enjoy my feelings!!!

“I don't understand why you're so upset.”
“Why did you tell Gina and Susie about the whole thing?”
“What’s with you, Ari?”
“We agreed not to talk about it.”
“I don’t get you.”
“I don’t get me either.”
I got up from the steps of his front porch where we were sitting. “I gotta go.” I looked out across the street. I remembered Dante running after two boys who were shooting at a bird.
I opened the door to my truck and climbed in. I slammed the door. Dante was standing in front of me. “Do you wish you hadn’t saved my life? Is that it? Do you wish I was dead?”
“Of course not,” I whispered.
He just stood there, looking at me.
I didn’t look back. I started my truck.
“You are the most inscrutable guy in the universe.”
“Yeah,” I said. “I guess I am.”

aries: a rich conspectus
*the zodiac sign of Aries, from a 15th century manuscript
Aries is the first sign of the zodiac. The Cardinal of Cardinals, it is the energy that represents initial spark. As such, they’re always on the first round of some kind of development. They represent infancy. Because of this, they’re completely selfish as babies are, concerned primarily with themselves and their relationship to the newness around them. The basic characteristic of Aries is action. They want to travel fast and their mental ability is uppermost, so they brush all non-essentials aside and get straight to the point. To more delicate folks, they can be quite brusque, mean, and rude in their directness. They function with a mental alertness which is just as sharp, if not sharper than any air sign, and they seldom fail to hit their mark. They can be petty and not be as kind to accepting the brutal “truth” they love to dish out to others. The thing with them is that their propensity for action involves all parts of the body, especially the head. Their innate impulsivity combines with their mental acuity and often overtakes them and has them assuming and jumping to conclusions; if they think you are lying on them, just pulling some shit out of your ass, or your info is inaccurate (whether or not this is actually the case), then it's on. Out of all the signs, they’re the most comfortable with confrontation, and as they unreservedly confront others, it is expected that they be confronted themselves without restriction, save this one caveat: you can confront them but you better have receipts.
The first are the pioneers and pioneers tend to be forgotten and/or overlooked, and so it is with Aries. I say this because in general, you hear/read almost nothing about this sign. So with that, I shall continue. They tend to have issues, mainly with anger and drugs. However, unlike water signs, they don’t wallow in self-pity. Aries doesn't stay mad or miserable. They deal with and then get the fuck over what is bothering them instead of plotting for infinity how to get revenge/get over something or someone. They channel this in creative outlets, not least of all music: some of the best singers that ever lived are fire signs and for me, Aries are at the top of the list. They're aware of their worth and value, it's called confidence. And like all Cardinal signs in general, they love to win, be the first and get to the front, and while they may not stick out in a crowd to some, in a competition, they would shit on you, more often than not. They’re also prepared to take the initiative. They like action and will not sit back and meekly wait for things to come to them; they make things happen. Whenever they come up against obstacles, they go hard, exhausting themselves trying to batter them down with everything they’ve got like the rams they are. When the going gets tough, the tough get going and they move ever forward and face things head on.
What’s not said about them is that they will bear the brunt of any argument or disagreement and won’t be malicious if they truly care about you and your feelings. They go full throttle on wherever their passion is. Since Aries is always attracted to what they don't know or understand, I find that Arians are attracted to a lot of water signs and Virgos, who intrigue them since they’re not as open as Aries are. Aries are very nosy--they have to know about everything, so inscrutability attracts them like almost nothing else. This is because of their nature, and the key to their nature is that they love a challenge. Challenges bring out their inborn pioneering spirit and naturally competitive nature, in love and in life. They always play with all their cards face up, so they get burned in the relationship department at times, but unlike certain signs (Cancer and Pisces, I’m looking at you) they will NOT put up with foolishness from anyone, lover or otherwise. Their reality is a physical one, and they like to rush things when it comes to love and sex. Fools rush in where angels fear to tread. Also, they like to be thought of as special and expect others to attend to their needs, yet Aries will neglect others’ needs unless they jump up and down making it clear to you. They childishly and artlessly demand that others concentrate on them. But, again, they’re simplistic; they take people at face value and the motivations and reactions of others often remain a mystery to them.
Their infantile nature means, among many things, that they have no filter. Also, like babies, they can be insecure and loud as hell. Aries are tactless and blunt BUT I have learned that the intent isn't always "evil." They just have absolutely no regard to how their message (and its delivery) will be received. The problem is usually that folks like to say what they deem crazy/disrespectful things to an Aries, but then those same folks get weird/sad/embarrassed when they clap back. There’s really no mystery when it comes to Aries; they are pretty guileless and simple in who they really are, so they’re easily figured out. Machiavellian they are not. They don't have time or patience for unnecessary BS. If they don’t see quick or impressive results, their scant patience disappears and they become frustrated and bored. They have no interest in any race they can’t win, and they can’t stand doing the same thing day after day. They can become addicted to adrenaline and to doing things their own way, no matter what.
Like their shadow sign Libra, they despise injustice and unfairness. They may be impulsive but they don't have trouble walking into a room and making conversation with just about everyone because they're not scared or shy. Also, like Libras, they want to be liked. But unlike Libras, they’re not willing to compromise, nor are they very adaptable to social conditioning. It’s curious that they actually want to be liked, considering their roughshod approach to others...in their profound naivete, they can’t understand why people react to them the way they do but really their pride and distaste for artifice of any kind means that they hate to stand on ceremony. They lack moderation and can learn the art of diplomacy and tolerance from their sister sign. Also, their ego dictates that they have to prove that they’re right, which tends to turn people off. They’re the ones who interrupt you when you talk, tailgate you on the freeway, are the angry drunks who’ll threaten (and more than likely cause) bodily harm, and leave abusive comments on your blog, anonymous or not. ;) They’re not known to be extremely deep or introspective. They expect the world to be the same as them and react childishly and even violently when it is not. They want that shiny new toy that just came out and they want it NOW.
Their self-centeredness is reflected in how they relate to the world and navigate it; they look to themselves to make a new start. They study themselves to make a new orientation. No matter the level, they teach by example that we must always straighten ourselves out first. As true children of Mars, Aries are balls-to-the-wall, full steam ahead aggressive. This defiant Martian aggressiveness often defeminizes the women of this sign, which I suppose can be somewhat unfair. Nonetheless, underneath all that ego and “aggression” is a low-key sensitive, down to earth, and even kind person who wants to be taken seriously and their impatience and recklessness can contradict this, which tends to make them angry or at least appear that way. Another thing that makes these rams angry and bitter, if undeveloped, is if they feel that they’ve had to fight too hard for too long. In an evolved Aries, their self-reliance when the chips are down instills a sense of pride in themselves and, thus, others will be inspired and proud of them as well. Good, bad, or indifferent, there is much to be said for their uncomplicated approach to life.

Steven Universe - Zodiac Edition
Amethyst - Aries
Amethyst is always good for a laugh and has the ability to really cheer people up with her lighthearted way of going. All of Amethyst’s appearance screams ‘Fight me!’ (well, except her rather cute looks). She loves to live, is bursting full of energy and takes in everything pleasure along the way. Although she’s not the voice of reason, in crucial situations she’s surprisingly mature in her decisions and states her mind without fancy bits. Without her friends (and therefore family) she’d be lost because she’d much rather be guided by her companions to avoid having all the responsibility laid on her shoulders.
Greg - Taurus
Greg is a real uniqueness. His innocent approach to doing things and his impartiality make him a treat to have around. He’s satisfied with the simple things in life - love, music and family; those give him the most. He’s more confident singing than talking. His unconditional care for his son but on the other hand the freedom he gives him show Greg’s a deeply mature person who knows exactly when to interfere and when not to. Due to his absolute humbleness and giving heart he always seems a little surprised when people express their appreciation for him although it is definitely justified.
Peridot - Gemini
Cute, helpless, annoying? Absolutely NOT! (Well, maybe a little.) Peri brings a lot of energy with her. Always analyzing everything to the bottom of it in a highly scientific way, Peri is curious and skeptical. She adapts to new situations (even if slowly and in her own way) and her cheekiness and impulsive approach will always make you smile. She talks and thinks in a very fast manner but is reserved when it comes to her own feelings or crucial decisions. But once you get to the core of her thinking, Peri turns out to be a loyal and appreciative friend willing to learn from prior mistakes.
Steven - Cancer
The power of kindness - that’s what Steven’s greatest gift is. With his ability to talk some sense into people, he’s almost always on the winning side. But beside Steven’s pureness of heart and intentions, he’s also constantly evolving, taking the best from his companions, learning with the most childlike enthusiasm. Oftentimes, Steven depicts a kind of mirror for the people surrounding him, showing them in a subtle way what suppressed feelings they may have been carrying around for too long. Actually, one just can’t help but burst into tears given his sheer preciousness.
Bismuth - Leo
Meeting Bismuth is like an explosion of positive feelings. Her powerful aura and will to do good make her a solid rock one can always count on. Sometimes acting impulsive and out of sheer emotion, she forgets how big of an intimidation she can depict, especially for the gentler spirits. Reasoning with her may turn out to become a real tough quarrel but once brought to a thinking, Bismuth will follow the most logic way of preceding that her heart proposes. Besides, who wouldn’t wanna be cuddled by those strong arms at the end of the day?
Pearl - Virgo
Pearl may be the strongest of them all given the things she went through. Her own complicated feelings tend to hold her back sometimes. Overprotective towards Steven and sometimes doubting other people’s inner strength, Pearl may come across as a fault-finder when in truth she has a lot of stuff going on in her mind she’d rather keep secret to not worry the others. She sees herself as the responsible one and would sometimes like to be more fun to be around but those doubts are unnecessary. Pearl is loved for being deeply passionate, strong on her own and she’d never give up. Also she withholds a kind of motherly status - all of that she masters with the utmost grace and femininity.
Rose Quartz - Libra
Oh Rose, what a mystery you are for so many! Loving, gentle, beautiful and simultaneously authorative and terrifying. A sheer delight to look at and provided with the gift to soothe all living beings, Rose has the most curious and loudest pounding heart. She’s never not amazed by things that are new to her and would never decline the offer to explore some more. In the simplest things she recognizes beauty and in the darkest places she’d find a match to light up.
Garnet - Scorpio
Inscrutable Garnet, what makes your heart combine? If the answer was simple then Garnet wouldn’t be able to always surprise with an unforeseen act. As she is most of the time the one people turn to for an answer, the reason for that is diverse: Garnet can be the calmness in person, balanced and encouraging. A truly strong fighter with an iron will, unyielding and well… just cool. Her intuition and wisdom provide guidance as much as her dry humour comes out of the blue. Her heart is big and kind but Garnet knows when it’s unavoidable to simply speak the truth, even if it may be a very harsh one.
Connie - Sagittarius
Mind, body and heart - all three define Connie. Her braveness comes from within; she’s mature and wise for her age and completes Steven affectionately when he’s acting rashly. She’s a quick and eager learner and is very good at getting to the core of the matter. When something’s incomprehensible to her she speaks up in a kind way and wants to clarify her point of view. Connie would never give up and is a real fighter ready for another ‘let’s save the earth’ kind of mission. Strong together - but she would never forget she’s her own independent boss and teacher.
Sadie - Capricorn
Sadie never ceases to amaze: she works very hard, is independent and simply a great friend. Once her heart has decided on a matter, that view is settled for the time being. She’s steady in her nature and rarely loses her temper but when she does, be sure there really is a reason to it. Sadie’s mature mindset allows her to take things into her own hands, tolerate Lars’ quirks, and to gather her strength from within herself. Besides, she’s and excellent singer and she’d almost do anything to cheer the people around her up so that her surroundings can work out properly.
Lapis Lazuli - Aquarius
At first sight, Lapis comes off emotionally detached and maybe even a bit bad-tempered. But this is only because she doesn’t see a point in overly dealing with people who don’t give her anything back. Besides, Lapis’ experiences have made her a bit of a cynic who’s skeptical towards new people. Her bright mind is a very sensible one with a 'no bullshit’-attitude. Maybe she’ll never admit it but the friends she’s found mean literally the world to her and it seems like she’s sometimes unable to grasp the love she receives. Lapis is very brave and sacrificing, always fighting like a true rebel for the greater purpose.
Lars - Pisces
As one of Steven’s best friends, Lars oftentimes gets involuntarily caught up in one of his adventures. Due to his many self-doubts, Lars tends to act incomprehensible to his friends. Through his self-downgrading he overshadows his good qualities of which he has so many! He’s loving, brave and a real leader (with quite a talent for baking!) But Lars gets jealous easily and is pretty lethargic at times so that he looks at the black side too quickly. When he overcomes this, incredible powers may be set free which with no doubt will come in handy when he’s really needed. He’ll be there. (Maybe.)

Moon Signs of the Riverdale Cast ☽ (Part I).
In this post, I will be doing a list of the Riverdale cast and their moon signs. We all know what the casts sun signs are, but nobody knows what they’re moon signs are. A lot of emphasis is put onto sun signs but in astrology, moon signs are actually way more crucial and important in determining someone’s true nature and personality. The Sun sign represents the Ego or outer personality, but the Moon sign represents the inner nature and personality. So, in reality, the Moon sign is someone’s true personality though it’s the side of themselves that they keep hidden from the outside world and only show to those they are close with or comfortable with. Here is more information about what a moon sign is and what it represents in astrology.
What Is A Moon Sign?
Moon Signs help define our emotional development, or express the unconscious side of our personality. It explains why we do what we do. This is where we retreat for comfort, childhood memories, and peace. This can also be the place where anger, hate, jealousy and fear may be found. The Moon also influences our senses depending on its placement in the birth chart. Most people will have their Moon in a Sign that is different from their Sun. This is why many people with the same Sun Sign can be so different from each other. They may feel that when they read a description of their Sign, that it is not representative of them. It may feel incomplete, or even completely inaccurate. Moon Signs may be a much more accurate description of what a person is like. If your Moon Sign is the same as your Sun Sign, you may find that it amplifies the traits of that Sign. This would make you a "double" of your Sign, such as a "double Gemini." The Moon also governs the heart, stomach, brain, bladder, bowels and the left eye. It has influence with the glands and fluids of the body.The Moon is said to represent your instinctual self, which many people keep hidden. On points where your Sun and Moon Signs are compatible, they will work together to help you get through the hardships and accomplish your goals. Where they are not compatible, you will feel conflicting desires or be at odds with yourself in some way. For example, if your Moon is in Gemini, you may be very changeable emotionally. You may get stressed out easily, and the more people you discuss your issues with, the more confused you may become. Scorpio Moons also deal with a lot of stress, but tend to keep it all under wraps. Jealousy may be a big problem for a person with a Scorpio Moon. Aries Moons are headstrong, aggressive and may be difficult to control. They do best if they can find a physical outlet for their emotions, like sports. Our Moon Sign also offers insight in how to reach our inner child. In astrology language, your Sun sign dictates your zodiac personality, while your Moon sign, the second most important influence in your horoscope chart after the Sun, represents your emotions, your inner mood. And the two together strongly influence your emotional mode of operation.

Scorpio Moon ♏︎☽ ❤️ Aries Moon ♈︎☽
Scorpio Moon and Aries Moon may be compatible if both partners really work on pleasing each other. While passions run hot on both sides, this pairing often becomes a relationship where one partner is constantly making the effort to accommodate the other one. Both Scorpio moon and Aries moon want to be in charge; Aries because they like to be the leader, and Scorpio because they like to control everything in their lives. Both partners are intense and powerful, though their individual differences are what can tear them apart. Aries prefers to surf along on the surface while Scorpio runs very deep. Aries likes to deal with issues with aggressive emotions while Scorpio will slink away silently, hiding their feelings and holding a grudge. This can be a very challenging pairing. While both are very emotional people, Aries lets their frustrations out and goes on. Scorpio, on the other hand, is complex, secretive and may become suspicious of everything their partner does. Because of their passionate natures, Scorpio Moon and Aries Moon tend to be drawn to each other
but this is usually not a long lasting relationship due to the viciousness of their conflicts. If they can make it work, it will be a very passionate, emotional relationship.
Scorpio Moon ♏︎☽ ❤️ Taurus Moon
Scorpio Moon and Taurus Moon can be deliriously happy with each other; or they can absolutely detest each other. Unfortunately, one pair can experience both extremes. When things are going good, they are on top of the world. When they have problems, they feel no one else is experiencing anything worse. Both partners in this relationship can be stubborn and inflexible. They both rely on their instincts. They are both deeply attracted to each other. Taurus Moon, however, will drive Scorpio Moon mad with their need for affection, desire for physical comforts and practicality. Scorpio Moon will drive Taurus Moon mad with their strong desire for sexual intensity, secrets and need for control through manipulation. They may find themselves in a pattern of separation and reconciliation over and over again. This can end up being a hurtful situation for both partners. Taurus Moon will be much easier to please in this pairing. Scorpio Moon has deep feelings, and when hurt can be tremendously hostile. Scorpio is prone to feeling jealous, angry and guilty. Taurus understands none of this, even though they may be a bit possessive. Once they learn to deal with each other, however, the strong attraction that brought them close in the first place can create a very special bond.
Scorpio Moon ♏︎☽ ❤️ ♏︎☽ Gemini Moon
Scorpio Moon and Gemini Moon may or may not work out. The relationship is bound to become out of balance unless both partners are constantly working to keep it going smoothly. These two are not well matched and may have a lot of challenges to conquer. Scorpio Moon and Gemini Moon are very different, emotionally. They may have difficulty appreciating the other or understanding where the other is coming from. Gemini has a light, superficial approach to relationships that truly upsets Scorpio, who feels passionate and intense. Likewise, Scorpio's outbursts, jealousy and manipulation to gain control over Gemini's need for freedom, socialization and variety will cause Gemini to run far away. Scorpio gets frustrated by Gemini's rationality and need for new experiences. While Gemini is attracted to Scorpio, it is more to gain the experience than to create a lifelong relationship. Can two signs be more different than Scorpio and Gemini? Gemini Moon will feel threatened or uncomfortable by the intensity and will try to deflect this through humor, reason and finally avoidance. Gemini's need for socializing, variety and mental stimulation is totally foreign to Scorpio. Scorpio Moon intensely loves or hates everything they come across. They cannot be reasonable, detached or rational when it comes to personal issues. They often feel that Gemini just doesn't care. Scorpio is very private and may be unsociable sometimes. They can also be very demanding, but it is due to their need and ability to share deeply and to relish the closeness and intimacy that they crave. Gemini may not be capable of achieving this level.
⭐️ Scorpio Moon ♏︎☽ ❤️ Cancer Moon ♋︎☽
Scorpio Moon and Cancer Moon will share a great respect and understanding. They are a very well matched pair. Both partners will become deeply attached to each other. Passionate Scorpio and nurturing Cancer can plumb the emotional depths like no one else. Both partners are intuitive and sensitive to each others' needs and feelings. These two want a committed relationship. They may tend to lose objectivity and perspective about their relationship.This pairing is almost a psychic bonding that nurtures them both and can transform them both spiritually and emotionally. Scorpio is happy to have Cancer totally dependent upon them, because secretly, Scorpio is equally as dependent upon Cancer. Their differences can be found, but they won't make much of a fuss between them. Scorpio is passionate and emotional, with strong hates and equally strong loves.They react emotionally to people and situations. They reveal themselves to few, as they don't like to appear vulnerable. They can be vindictive when hurt. Cancer is soft, gentle and tender. While Scorpio's intensity can sometimes upset them, they are very sympathetic and understanding. They strive for a nurturing, peaceful atmosphere at home where they can all be happy.
Scorpio Moon ♏︎☽ ❤️ Leo Moon ♌︎☽
Scorpio Moon and Leo Moon will challenge each other greatly. One will need to make compromises to make the relationship work. This may lead to resentment. Both partners here need commitment and loyalty from each other. Neither one is into brief one night stands. They are each strong willed, inflexible and proud. They both need to feel they are in control. Leo Moon always sees the bright side, while Scorpio Moon tends to dwell on the dark. Leo is direct, warm, humorous and outgoing; Scorpio is private, jealous, distrustful and deep. There is a lot for this pairing to overcome to create a successful relationship. If they are successful, they will be surrounded by great intensity and power. In order to do this, they need to let go of their fears of intimacy and reveal their true natures. Scorpio Moon is more suspicious of what lies on the surface. They are always searching for the motives of others. Leo Moon accepts others on face value, and they may feel that Scorpio is stirring up trouble where it doesn't exist. As long as each person is willing to accept the differences in the other, this relationship may work out. If they have the drive to stick it out, they could have a very nice time together.
Scorpio Moon ♏︎☽ ❤️ Virgo Moon
Scorpio Moon and Virgo Moon are fairly well matched. They share many of the same opinions and have a strong respect for each other. They also have some fundamental differences that they will need to work with in order to remain together. Virgo Moon is logical, yet may be overly critical of themselves and others. They cannot detach themselves easily when they should just let something go. They tend to be perfectionists. Scorpio Moon is emotional, analytical and intuitive. They love secrets, and have a need to get to the root of them. Both partners may over-analyze themselves and others. They both want to improve themselves, but through different methods. Both are loyal to the end. Emotions and sex may embarrass Virgo, while Scorpio needs that intensity to feel complete. They can be good for each other if they can get over their differences. Scorpio Moon may hide their feelings of guilt or jealousy from Virgo. They can be manipulative in a subtle way, as they feel a need to be in control. Virgo Moon appears shy and restrained, and they may not know how to deal with the intensity of Scorpio's moods. Both can be sensitive to criticism in their own ways. With work and dedication, they may keep the relationship going.
Scorpio Moon ♏︎☽ ❤️ Libra Moon
Scorpio Moon and Libra Moon may get along fine, especially if one partner is willing to put up with the eccentricities of the other. They may not be able compromise enough in some cases, since their desires are so different. Libra Moon likes peaceful surroundings, harmonious relationships and light chatter during social engagements. Scorpio Moon needs passion and intense experiences. They really dislike superficial bantering. Libra hates confrontation and conflict, while Scorpio may appear to seek it out. While Libra Moon wants fairness, Scorpio Moon wants revenge. Major adjustments will need to be made by both partners to make an equal, happy relationship. Libra Moon is very tolerant and accepts people as they are. Scorpio Moon analyzes and becomes suspicious. Scorpio Moon may also be very controlling and manipulative in order to dominate the relationship. This can make Libra Moon very uncomfortable. They may end up pulling back without even realizing it at first. Both partners will really have to be committed to this relationship in order to make it beneficial to both partners. It is just very hard for Libra Moon to give Scorpio Moon what they need, and vice versa.
Scorpio Moon ♏︎☽ ❤️ Scorpio Moon ♏︎☽
Scorpio Moon and Scorpio Moon magnifies all of their good traits, and all of their bad traits as well. If one gets suspicious of the other, it is twice as strong. They will be extremely intense, jealous and moody. This can be a lot of strain for a relationship to go through. The chances of a double Scorpio match succeeding are very low. It is true that a double Scorpio Moon can make for a very passionate partnership, it is also extremely volatile. Both partners are so intensely emotional that it is exhausting. While both are extremely loyal and possessive, they are also suspicious and manipulative. They may look calm on the surface, but underneath they could be seething with hatred or suspicion. Each partner will want to be in control. If they do manage to make this pairing work, it could be very powerful and transformative for both of them. Secretive and cautious, Scorpio Moon is very sensitive to betrayal, whether it is real or just imagined. They may be inclined to create drama to experience various emotional situations. Both partners will seek out challenging ways to experience more powerful feelings in their careers or hobbies. Those that don't find satisfaction that way will create their own situations at home with their partner.
Scorpio Moon ♏︎☽ ❤️ Sagittarius Moon ♐︎☽
Scorpio Moon and Sagittarius Moon may have some conflicts. If one is willing to bend over backwards for the other, there may be some possibility for a long term relationship, but this may end up creating tension. They do share some understandings, but overall it may be difficult for them to keep it going. Scorpio Moon is private, suspicious and passionate. They are loyal, emotional and possessive. Sagittarius Moon on the other hand, is social, upbeat and philosophical. They want a certain amount of freedom and independence. Disagreements are likely to arise from Scorpio's need to uncover secrets and Sagittarius' need to expand their experiences. They are likely to inhibit both partners by their behavior. In order for either partner to feel safe and secure in the relationship, they will need to accommodate each other. Scorpio's jealousy may erupt into an emotional scene when Sagittarius is just being friendly and having fun. They have a hard time understanding why the other does what they do. Chances are the relationship will not last too long if they are not able or willing to work on their problem areas. They are as different as night and day.
Scorpio Moon ♏︎☽ ❤️ Capricorn Moon ♑︎☽
Scorpio Moon and Capricorn Moon make the best of friends, and this can also turn into a nice romantic relationship as well. They can often have a long lasting relationship filled with respect and admiration. Both Scorpio and Capricorn are loyal and are capable of great depth of feeling. They are both rather private and dedicated. They both proceed with caution and are slow to trust. Where they differ can either make the relationship interesting or problematic. Scorpio needs to experience intense emotions, and may actually manufacture drama in order to fill this need. Capricorn will place practical needs above all else. Capricorn may seem emotionally detached compared to Scorpio's intensity. Capricorn can teach Scorpio how to focus on practical matters and Scorpio can help Capricorn feel more comfortable with their sensuality. If each partner focuses on the other, they can develop very strong bonds and enjoy a deep relationship. If Scorpio can curb the suspicion, Capricorn will respond better. Neither partner is capable of superficial feelings. They can create a wonderful relationship if they can only get over the few differences they have. Both should learn how to communicate rather than keep secrets from each other.
Scorpio Moon ♏︎☽ ❤️ Aquarius Moon ♒︎☽
Scorpio Moon and Aquarius Moon will tend to grate on each other unless they fill their relationship with compromises. Both partners are fixed in their ways and are very different emotionally. Neither one is known for changing themselves in order to make accommodations for their partner. This is a relationship that probably won't last long. Scorpio Moon is private and desires emotional intimacy. They can get very possessive and suspicious; on the flip side, Aquarius Moon is very social. They need to be involved with groups of people and focus on the future. They want someone who is intellectual like themselves with whom they can have enlightening conversations. They want freedom and don't want anyone controlling them; whereby Scorpio desires to control their partner, and may use manipulation to get what they want. What is wrong with this picture? It is not a picture of a healthy relationship. Aquarius' need for intellectual stimulation may take them to groups who share a common interest. This may make Scorpio Moon jealous and in their need to control their partner, Scorpio may do anything to manipulate the situation so Aquarius Moons must be with them. Even with a lot of work on the part of both partners, they may never see eye to eye. This relationship is often better off if both parties cut their losses and find other partners.
⭐️ Scorpio Moon ♏︎☽ ❤️ Pisces Moon ♓︎☽
Scorpio Moon and Pisces Moon are made for each other. They understand each other well and respect their differences. They work together well and will likely have an emotional, long lasting relationship. Both Scorpio Moon and Pisces Moon are capable of moody behavior. They are intuitive and emotional. They can, in some cases, develop a psychic bond. Their shared sensitivity helps them meet the other's needs. Scorpio needs intense emotions. They may find this in love, anger, fear, loyalty, sex, revenge or obsession. Pisces wants harmony and to avoid conflict, whereas Scorpio loves conflict. This may cause upset if not openly discussed. Both are great manipulators and their secrets and emotional intimacy will bind these two together deeply. Pisces Moon is very forgiving and tolerant, while Scorpio Moon longs to retaliate. It isn't too difficult for these two to work through their differences though. They share the most important part for both of them: the emotional intimacy. They may share an interest in the occult or other secrets. This also gives them a sense of belonging to each other.

Born with the Moon in Scorpio, you are likely to be sensitive and loyal, but have intense emotional needs. Scorpio is a Water sign, which relates to the emotional, psychological and spiritual dimensions of life. You are likely to give the impression of being perceptive, powerful, and transformational. Scorpio is also a Fixed sign, suggesting that when you align your emotions with something you desire – be that a friend/lover or an anticipated outcome – you will be constant, enduring and unwilling to let go. For you, a sense of emotional wellbeing comes from having close and truthful connections with others which allow you to explore the life’s depths. Depending on other influences in your chart, you are also likely to be a passionate individual with a real capacity to connect on an emotional level. You will seek intimacy in your relationships, and demand loyalty in return. The sensitivity and depth of your nature means you are likely to have intense reactions to emotional stimuli. Scorpio is not an easy place for the Moon to be. The Moon is traditionally considered in her “fall” here, suggesting certain challenges around how lunar (emotional) qualities are expressed. Because the quality of your emotions – their strength and potential power – can be so intense, they can at times be overwhelming. Early on in life, you may find yourself swinging between extremes, like you are riding a rollercoaster of emotional peaks and troughs. You feel acutely every dimension of life. You will do best if you remember not to collapse yourself into your emotions, or believe that just because an emotion has intensity, it must be acted upon. Part of your nature requires that you learn to allow strong feelings to flow through you, without being overwhelmed by them. With time, and as greater self-awareness develops, you will learn to understand the depths of your emotions by taking time for introspection. You can gain great insight into yourself and others by developing a true sensitivity to the complexity of emotional needs. As you understand the depth of your own nature, you learn to recognize the true motivations in others as well. Scorpio is also a sign of privacy. You are likely to prefer playing your cards ‘close to your chest’. Rather than letting everybody know exactly what you are experiencing, you learn to keep your true feelings to yourself. Even those nearest to you may have no idea of the depth of emotional storms besieging you, and the relief that comes when the clear light of understanding eventually shines through. To harness your potential for emotional insight and connectedness you should learn to spend time “going within”. You feel intensely, for better or for worse. This can at times make you seem vulnerable, but in truth you are likely to possess great strength. Your emotional nature combines sensitivity with the instinctual awareness that real growth only happens through episodes of pain and transformation. No stranger to this truth, you are likely to prefer to see things for what they are – both in yourself and in other people. You are likely to have a highly developed ability to sense the emotional undercurrents around you, and prefer dealing with the raw truth at any cost. You have a knack for pinpointing what you, and others, really want or need in a situation – which may be confronting – but always brings the truth to light. Through confronting things for what they really are, you bring this light into your own and others lives. By entering and resolving emotional crises, you generate greater emotional or spiritual freedom for yourself and other people.There may be a tendency to try and protect your vulnerability, hiding the true depths of what you really feel. The tendency to suppress or hide your emotions can go both ways. On the one hand, you may try to detach from uncomfortable emotions, and avoid circumstances that will really get you to feel. You may protect yourself from close encounters with others, and find emotional release through fictional or fantasy-based sources. Or, you may attempt to control and dominate others with moodiness, lashing out at them before they can “get to you”. Defence can be used as a form of offence to prevent others discovering how sensitive and vulnerable you really are. Either way, you end up missing the benefit of true intimacy by not letting others share in how you feel. You need to develop trust in others by letting them into your life. This means listening to your own intuition, and choosing the right confidantes to share the real depths of your immensely loving heart. For you, the exchange of emotional energy makes living worthwhile. A need to be close and connect to others is likely to be a constant theme in your life. Through sharing your substantial emotional resources, you uncover the truth about yourself. At the same time, you expose yourself to deeper levels of power and vulnerability. This process of self-exposure is what you need, and ultimately leads you to a form of inner transformation that can only happen through trust and mutual intimacy. The goal for those born with a Scorpio Moon is to develop deeper levels of closeness in life. Through relationships you understand the world around and your place in it. By connecting and sharing with others, inner peace is found.Accordingly, this lunar position is excellent for anything which requires an understanding other peoples’ motives and drives. A natural psychologist, you will be adept at sensing what others really need. You can do well in any field that involves ‘reading’ others. How clearly you do this will have much to do with what you are prepared to face in yourself. By exploring your own dark cupboards you learn to sense what others keep in theirs. This placement calls for great emotional honesty; an all-or-nothing preparedness to live from a position of power and truth. Your greatest gift is your ability to bring light into your own and others’ lives by seeing things for what they really are. You help others transform what needs redeeming through accepting themselves as they are.If you fail to live from a place of honesty, then you could display the more negative or poisonous potential of the Moon in Scorpio. Overwhelmed by your own vulnerability, you could seek to destroy others. You may (unconsciously or not) try to take others down, rather than face the darkness within yourself. You may find yourself exposing flaws and manipulating weaknesses as a way to inflict pain. If this happens, you need to transform first the pain in your own life before involving yourself with others and having an influence on what they do with theirs. At the highest level, Moon in Scorpio gives you the ability to transform your own and others lives. You can act as an agent for change, becoming a catalyst for greater growth and awareness. You can help others shift their psychological values. The potential power contained here is enormous. You have the opportunity to be a force for good. Valuing your own and others privacy, you can be trusted to keep a confidence, and have a rare kind of understanding that is born from simply accepting things for what they are. You can be the one others turn to with their deepest secrets and most hidden pain. When you let them share their stories, you help them heal their pain. When you talk to them truthfully abut you feel is going on you can help them find a path to transformation. With your awareness of the depths of human nature and empathy for others, you can bear witness, offer counsel and help others renew themselves. With the moon in Scorpio, individuals are emotionally intense with an aura of mystery constantly surrounding them. They own the characteristic of deciphering the emotional state of anyone and possess the capability to look through anyone’s emotions and feelings. Due to this quality, others consider them as enigmatic people who manage to achieve such a feat accurately constantly. They have a continued requirement for change and excitement. They normally wish for excitement and continued drama in their lives and thrive on emotional drama. Scorpio-born go out in securing their relationships, and they certainly don’t believe in half measures. They never waste their time in meaningless relationships as they long for total commitment from their partners. With the moon in Scorpio, individuals have a dynamic and attractive personality and their entire character is filled with mystery which often draws others to them. They possess a gift of intuition, and strive extremely hard to control their intense emotions. However, for their own gains, they tend to use this gift of intuition. In the occult and the unusual, these individuals tend to have a strong interest. By their very nature, they are amazingly creative beings. Overall, these individuals are charismatic in nature and attract one and all with their mysterious aura. Attitude wise, the Scorpio-born is non conformist individual, and aren't bothered to adhere to the norms set by the society.

Virgo Moon ♍︎☽ ❤️ Aries Moon ♈︎☽
Virgo Moon and Aries Moon can make a relationship work, but it may take some effort on the part of both people. They get along fairly well most of the time until circumstances cause them to react. This is what brings out their differences. Virgo and Aries both need to try to work in harmony. Passionate Aries likes to jump right into things and take chances. They are enthusiastic and loud. Stable Virgo, on the other hand, prefers to analyze the situation first and draw up a plan. They are sensitive and tend to worry. While Aries is bossy, Virgo is critical. They may allow the tension to grow between them or grow impatient with each other. They both approach life's situations very differently. This may end up causing so much irritation the relationship is unsalvageable. Aries Moon will tend to burst out with their anger, which in turn will make Virgo Moon nervous and sensitive. Virgo's perfectionist ways will bring criticism down on Aries, as they really don't care if they make mistakes along the way. These criticisms can prove to be very discouraging to Aries, who needs to feel loved and supported to maintain their enthusiasm. If Virgo Moon and Aries Moon are to make a go of it, Aries needs to share their creative ideas and allow Virgo to help bring them to fruition.
Virgo Moon ♍︎☽ ❤️ Taurus Moon ♉︎☽
Virgo Moon and Taurus Moon are extremely compatible. They have a great deal of respect and understanding for each other. Taurus is stable and pragmatic; Virgo is practical and attends to detail. They are made for each other. Both partners are cautious and approach new things slowly. They both enjoy working with nature and natural materials. Both are concerned about how change will affect them.Their differences lie in how they react. While Taurus Moon will forge ahead once they commit to an idea, Virgo Moon will constantly second guess and criticize their choice. The worrying done by Virgo will be comforted by Taurus' steadiness and emotional stability. Taurus, in turn, helps Virgo to relax and become more instinctual. Virgo Moon may become annoyed with the lackadaisical way that Taurus Moon leaves things all over the house. Overall, however, this is a happy and content pairing. They meet each others' needs for intimacy and pleasant company. They will be most content in the country or if they are able to grow a garden or at least go camping frequently. They have a need to interact with nature in some way. This pairing should do very well with minimal effort.
Virgo Moon ♍︎☽ ❤️ Gemini Moon ♊︎☽
Virgo Moon and Gemini Moon are not very well matched, though they can make it work if they are dedicated to the relationship. There will be challenges in this pairing. One of the pair must compromise to overcome the irritations created by these personalities. Gemini Moon is restless and wants new challenges and ideas. They love to socialize and meet new people. Virgo Moon is a perfectionist who isn't afraid to work hard to get what they want. They are talented with details and organizing. Gemini Moon is superficial and optimistic; Virgo Moon is pessimistic and critical. They have a strong sense of responsibility and service to others. Gemini will take on more projects than they can handle easily and often leaves them unfinished. Virgo also takes on many projects, but they work on one at a time until they are finished down to every meticulous detail. Both partners may find themselves stretched thin from overwork. Virgo Moon will take it upon themselves to bring nutritious foods and healthy habits into the relationship. They find it irritating when things are out of place. They are more disciplined than Gemini and they want to improve themselves. Gemini Moon finds it easier to relax and play than Virgo does. They do share a passion for word games and other knowledge challenges. It will take work, but they could make a lasting relationship out of this if they try.
Virgo Moon ♍︎☽ ❤️ Cancer Moon ♋︎☽
Virgo Moon and Cancer Moon make great friends as well as a great couple; they are loyal to each other and they have a great respect and understanding for each other. This will most likely be a successful, long term relationship. Virgo Moon and Cancer Moon are both moody and are conscious of their health. They do everything with caution, and tend to be quiet and unassuming. They make a terrific domestic partnership because Cancer takes care of the home and Virgo takes care of working to earn money. They express love differently
Cancer is tender, compassionate and sympathetic while Virgo chooses to express their love through practical acts like fixing the car or cooking a meal. Virgo tends to be somewhat judgmental of themselves and everyone else while Cancer is more accepting of others and their situations. Both are patient and tend to accumulate their security gradually. Virgo Moon can be difficult to live with due to their fussiness about proper behavior, cleanliness, hygiene and so forth. They get irritated by those who cannot live up their standards. Virgo also turns this harsh standard on themselves, however, which can make them feel inadequate. Cancer can help Virgo learn self-acceptance and self-love. They can help them to relax and enjoy themselves. With all of Cancer's emotional roller coasters, they can really appreciate Virgo's devotion and faithfulness as a rock to cling to.
Virgo Moon ♍︎☽ ❤️ Leo Moon ♌︎☽
Virgo Moon and Leo Moon have about a fifty-fifty chance of making their relationship work. Negative feelings that come up may feel stronger in this pairing. While they share many outlooks, they respond differently. Virgo Moon and Leo Moon are two sides of the same coin in a way. While Leo is dramatic, seeking attention and glory, Virgo is quiet, reserved and content to be in the background. Leo wants to show their feelings in grand gestures while Virgo prefers to show their feelings in quiet, practical ways. Leo is a bit lazy, funny and playful and Virgo is hardworking, disciplined and organized. Leo wants praise; Virgo gives criticism. While both partners value family and a good home life, they approach it differently. Leo sees their home and family as a reflection of themselves, while Virgo views it as an opportunity to strive for perfection through service. Problems may stem from Leo's need for recognition and approval while Virgo's critical approach may make both of them rather inhibited. Virgo's rather conservative lifestyle may find Leo a bit embarrassing. In order for this relationship to work, both sides will need to adjust to accommodate the other person's needs.
Virgo Moon ♍︎☽ ❤️ Virgo Moon ♍︎☽
Virgo Moon and Virgo Moon have a lot in common. There is, however, such a concept as too much of a good thing. While Virgo is fastidious, practical and detail oriented, two at the same time can be overwhelming, even for Virgos. Two Virgo Moons together will tend to focus on their flaws rather than their good points. There is no one to counteract their habit of worrying about trivial things and fear of being less than perfect. Each will demand perfection of the other. Both partners are rather unemotional, yet very sensitive. Each partner will tend to make life difficult for the other. If they can learn not to nag each other over trivial things, that is a step in the right direction. On the good side, Virgo Moons are wonderful for lavishing care and devotion on those things and people who are important to them. Though they may not show it to the world at large, they can be very giving and thoughtful.
Virgo Moon ♍︎☽ ❤️ Libra Moon ♎︎☽
Virgo Moon and Libra Moon may be able to make a go of it. One partner may end up being more tolerant of the other. Negative feelings seem to be magnified with this pairing. There are many differences with this couple. Virgo Moon wants to create a home with perfect order and efficiency. Libra Moon wants to create a perfect relationship with complete equality. Virgo focuses on the details and organization of things and how best to perform tasks. Libra focuses on creating an environment free of discord and conflict. While Libra is diplomatic, there is only so much criticism they can take. The biggest difference these two have is based on perfection. Libra sees perfection as harmonious and free of tension while Virgo sees perfection as efficiency and organization. Virgo also wants themselves to live up to their own high ideals, and it is just as difficult for them as it is for Libra. This makes them very self critical. Both partners respond in a more logical manner than emotional. If they are to make this relationship work, both partners will need to come to some sort of compromise.
Virgo Moon ♍︎☽ ❤️ Scorpio Moon ♏︎☽
Virgo Moon and Scorpio Moon are fairly well matched.
Virgo Moon ♍︎☽ ❤️ Sagittarius Moon ♐︎☽
Virgo Moon and Sagittarius Moon may or may not get along. They will have many challenges to face and one will need to make compromises to make things work out. They both approach the world from different viewpoints that may make it difficult for them to connect deeply. Practical Virgo will have their hands full with adventurous Sagittarius. Their biggest challenge is to learn that they really aren't that different… they just see things differently. If they can manage to put themselves in each others shoes once in awhile, it will really help smooth out their relationship. The smaller challenges will deal with practical matters. Virgo Moon will want to set a little aside for a rainy day, while Sagittarius will point out that the sky is cloudy now, so why not spend? Virgo wants everything organized and planned; Sagittarius doesn't like anything that gets in the way of their freedom and spontaneity. While the initial attraction is strong, it may prove too difficult to make it last. This will be especially true if each partner tries to convert the other over to their own way of doing things.
Virgo Moon ♍︎☽ ❤️ Capricorn Moon ♑︎☽
Virgo Moon and Capricorn Moon are the best of friends the moment they meet. They can't believe their luck in finding someone who shares so many things in common. They are highly compatible, and this relationship should work out well for all concerned. Both Virgo Moon and Capricorn Moon are organized and practical. They both work hard and want to be useful. Both are willing to forego their own desires and feelings in lieu of responsibilities. They are self-disciplined and meticulous. They are faithful, constant and don't like risks. They will happily tread the safe, logical path to financial security. Together they can have a very powerful connection. Others may view them as boring, but they feel secure and happy. They need to make sure they don't expect too much of themselves. With their self-critical tendencies, they can undermine their own work.They do need to be wary of overwork. All work and no play will make even Virgo Moon and Capricorn Moon dull. If they can learn to relax and enjoy themselves as well as maintain their responsibilities, they will be extremely happy.
Virgo Moon ♍︎☽ ❤️ Aquarius Moon ♒︎☽
Virgo Moon and Aquarius Moon may try too hard to please each other, creating an imbalance in the relationship. They have different ways of looking at the world, which may present them with a few challenges. One of the biggest challenges they will face is the fact that Virgo Moon is practical, while Aquarius Moon thinks mostly of humanity as a whole instead of their close relationships. While Aquarius' visionary ideals may take them far afield, Virgo tends to hold down the fort. While Virgo Moon wants a traditional home and family, Aquarius will find it easy to push them to second place. They appreciate Virgo's loyalty, but they are called to bigger things. Virgo is most happy when following a tried and true method for success, while Aquarius is more likely to try new things and experiment. Both partners can easily lose themselves in their interest of the moment. They may both become out of touch with their own feelings and emotions. Virgo Moon may turn their criticism on themselves, blaming themselves for Aquarius' willingness to push their family life aside. On the good side, both partners can learn to expand their horizons a bit if they can understand each others perspectives a bit more.
Virgo Moon ♍︎☽ ❤️ Pisces Moon ♓︎☽
Virgo Moon and Pisces Moon can be a very good relationship or a very bad one. Technically these two signs are just barely compatible. If both partners are watching for intolerance or misunderstanding, they may be able to make their relationship work. Virgo Moon is the perfect person to deal with the physical world and all its details. Pisces Moon, on the other hand, is disorganized, undisciplined and tends to have their head in the clouds. Some of these attributes may drive Virgo crazy, but they can also learn from Pisces' tolerant attitude. Likewise, Pisces could learn a thing or two about personal responsibility and boundaries from Virgo. Pisces Moon may get their feelings hurt by Virgo's critical nature. Both partners tend to be moody and pessimistic. They may both be a bit passive. If they learn to work together, they can be quite complementary to each other. Once Virgo Moon and Pisces Moon learn to work together, their lives can run rather smoothly. Their shared introspection can help them to overcome adversity and they can divide the daily tasks according to their temperaments. They should have a lovely, nurturing home life once they iron out the kinks.

With the Moon in the practical and systematic sign of Virgo, you are likely to be someone who is highly appreciative of structure, organization and detail. You will find your life works better with well-established systems in your personal and professional life. Virgo is an Earth sign, and so pertains to tangible or physical things. It is also known as a Mutable sign, which infers a need for variety and change. When practicality and change are brought together, the principle of refinement is found. Born with the Moon in Virgo, you are likely to have an innate need to improve or refine the circumstances around you – combining practical know-how with the analytical quality necessary to achieve specific results. Virgo is a sign of service. You are likely to find you have an innate need to nurture yourself and others through offering practical service in everyday ways. Virgo is also a sign of humility. You may be quite happy working behind the scenes, adding your considerable talent for organization to whatever you are involved in and happy to be of service, often asking nothing in return. The satisfaction of a job well-conceived, well-planned and well-done often provides the result you need. You should take care, however, not to allow this natural instinct for service to be manipulated, or taken advantage of by others. Ancient astrologers saw a relationship between the sign of Virgo and the condition of slavery. It is important that your need to be useful does not turn into the need to be someone else’s “pack-horse”. The Moon refers to how we need to be nurtured. You will find a tendency to feel safe or secure through knowing that things are tidy, structured and planned. Routine is your friend, and establishing well-ordered routines in your daily life will help you think more clearly. Virgo is associated with process and purification at both material and mental levels. You are likely to be emotionally affected by how well your daily systems are functioning and how ‘pure’ life conditions are. At a simple level, you are likely to feel awkward and uncomfortable in chaotic environments. You will feel more serene and so focussed in an organized space. At a more subtle level, you can be emotionally affected by food additives, pollutants and synthetics in your environment. This is not to say that you are ‘precious’ or need to be wrapped in cotton wool. It is just that you will feel impurities more acutelythan others. Above all else, you need a calm, peaceful and well ordered environment to access your astute thinking processes. You are nurtured by organization and structure. You assimilate information better when processes are clear, and sources of nourishment relatively clean. This is a sign of mental discrimination. You may have innate talents for editing or discernment, able to describe other people’s traits, dispositions and downfalls. Thus you may have strong writing abilities, or work well in fields involving communication, personal service and customer relations. You are likely to have a keen mind, and a great eye for detail. This can be turned to its’ full advantage by seeking occupations that allow you to capitalize on your ability to spot the ‘bottom line’. You are likely to be very good at extracting the essence from something otherwise complicated. You have the ability to sort the wheat from the chaff, and find what is essential in a sentence, task list or schedule. Because of your strong analytical ability, you may need to make sure that you watch your tendency to be overly critical, finding fault with yourself and others rather than working toward improving whatever situation you are in. Your capacity for analysis is great for problem-solving, but can also be your downfall. You are likely to be highly adaptable, but also prone to excessive worry. You can easily fall victim to nervous tension by constantly finding faults or remaining in chaotic environments that go against your instinctual needs. It is important that you learn to take time out when needed, and find ways to remedy the effects of too much nervous tension. Meditation, yoga, martial arts and other forms of mind-body exercise can be especially beneficial. This will greatly assist you to stay focussed and calm. Often, those with the Moon here can be quietly critical of self and others. Your tendency to criticize your own efforts may make it difficult for you to see your own true worth. You may underestimate your contributions and be innately convinced that whatever you do, it is not good enough. This can be a humble and shy position for the Moon. Unless other factors in your chart offer more outgoing tendencies, you may fail to receive credit for all that you have achieved. It is important that you learn to recognize how useful you are. Next time you are concerned that you have not ‘done enough’ simply ask yourself if you have improved the situation you are in. Rather than striving to be perfect, you will find that striving to make things better satisfies your need to be useful, and helps you take unrealistic expectations off yourself. On another level, Virgo is associated with the body and health. Thus, you may have an instinctual interest in matters of health, diet and nutrition. You may be naturally quite healthy simply because you have an interest in your own wellbeing, and notice that life flows better for you with regular exercise and good eating habits. It is very important that you to pay close attention to what you do, and do not, eat. Often, those with the Moon here have very delicate digestive and nervous systems. You are likely to find that you may have trouble with your stomach or nerves if you lose touch with your own bodily needs. Excess worry or problems with digestion may plague you if you do not pay attention to what you ingest. Taking in pure food (as well as experiences) is a very practical thing for you. You can be adversely affected by processed foods, and overcome with anxiety if exposed to harsh or critical people. Making sure you improve the systems that regulate your own personal life is essential for you. Through good food, routine and regular exercise you can enjoy extraordinarily good health This interest in health is often quite strong. You may have natural abilities in any area to do withhealth, nutrition and healing, especially in the area of natural therapies, herbs and pharmacology. Often those with the Moon here are drawn to service roles such as nursing and community work. Finding ways to be useful is important. Any activity that lets you combine your innate practicality, fine mind, and willingness to help can work well for you, leading to beneficial outcomes for all concerned. Individuals with the moon in Virgo are usually simple in nature and prefer to live a quiet life without the glare of public eye. They look for small things in their life to seek happiness and contentment. It is the small and insignificant matters in life like plucking flowers from a garden that give them real happiness. It is in their basic nature to not only take care of themselves, but to take care of others as well. Thus, such individuals are of extremely helpful nature and will be first to lend a helping hand to those in distress. These individuals love to have a routine in their life. They cannot do without a routine and if it is missing in their lives, they tend to feel that something is amiss in their life and they are not in their true elements due to it. They tend to act in a fussy manner and are often labelled as complainers as they cannot function properly without having a routine in their life. Due to such characteristics, they love to take on such jobs or tasks in which lot of detailing is required or which has a great scope for micromanagement of things and situations. Such individuals are always averse to public displays of affection and most of the times get repulsed because of that. Such individuals tend to be shy in meeting up new people. However, once they get to know them and gradually open up, they are in their own elements and strike a good rapport with them. Additionally, they are born sceptics in nature and tend to be over critical of themselves as well.

Pisces Moon ♓︎☽ ❤️ Aries Moon ♈︎☽
Pisces Moon and Aries Moon may get along or they may not. If they are to stand a chance, one will have to make concessions to the other on a regular basis. They may find themselves conflicted over what they each want out of life. Aries Moon likes to take action and be in charge, while Pisces Moon is gentle and passive. They prefer to just see where the current takes them. Aries is direct, enthusiastic and ready to face challenges while Pisces is vague and prefers not to face conflict of any kind. Aries feels a hurt, expresses themselves and moves on, while Pisces is so sensitive it is hard for them to let go of any hurt, however slight. Pisces may be clingy and needy while Aries is self-reliant. While they both follow their instincts, they react so differently that they may then spend quite a while trying to figure out where the misunderstanding occurred. They don't mean to offend the other, but they frequently do. They can't help it. They each just see things in such different ways. It can be very difficult for Aries Moon not to dominate Pisces Moon. Their passivity and unfocused sense of personal direction makes it so easy for Aries to just ride right over them. If they make this pairing work, it is usually Pisces who compromises and ends up feeling unloved and unsupported
two things they need desperately. This is a very difficult relationship to make last without irreparable damage.
Pisces Moon ♓︎☽ ❤️ Taurus Moon ♉︎☽
Pisces Moon and Taurus Moon can be very happy. They can develop a strong bond of friendship and loyalty that will see them through any rough times. Both partners are loving, sympathetic and generous. They like a tranquil home, love nature and music. Plants and animals are dear to both partners in this relationship. Taurus Moon is well grounded and practical; Pisces Moon is anything but grounded and is often impractical. These two partners have the ability to harmonize and complement each other as long as Taurus is in charge of practical matters. Taurus proves to be a good support for Pisces, who gives Taurus a bit of fantasy in their life. Taurus can nurture sensitive Pisces when needed. Pisces can be empathetic when Taurus needs it. They each bring some balance to the relationship. Together they can create a magical, peaceful home. Neither partner likes conflict; both are rather passive unless aroused. This pairing can fare very well for the long term as long as Taurus Moon takes care of the practical aspects.
Pisces Moon ♓︎☽ ❤️ Gemini Moon ♊︎☽
Pisces Moon and Gemini Moon will have many challenges that will require some compromises. This pairing could work, but they really have very little in common. Both are impressionable in different ways; Gemini is sensitive to thoughts and Pisces is sensitive to feelings. Intellect meets intuition. Gemini Moon is rational, restless, logical and objective while Pisces is receptive, sympathetic, artistic, passive and idealistic. Somewhere in the middle they meet with imagination and irresponsibility. Their differences are many. Gemini treats emotions very lightly and Pisces feels them deeply. Gemini grows through taking in more information while Pisces grows by letting go and trusting in a power greater than themselves. Gemini is focused on the future while Pisces dwells in the past. Gemini Moon is challenged by Pisces' erratic moods. Pisces Moon is threatened by Gemini's attempt to experience feelings as if they were just thoughts. Dreamy Pisces Moon may be offended when witty Gemini Moon makes a joke in an attempt to deal with all the emotion flying around. If Gemini Moon can learn to take Pisces' feelings into account and understand their sensitivity
and if Pisces Moon can learn to appreciate Gemini's ability to be objective and rational, they can find a middle ground upon which to thrive together.
⭐️ Pisces Moon ♓︎☽ ❤️ Cancer Moon ♋︎☽
As a couple, Pisces Moon and Cancer Moon rate a perfect ten. They have very similar motivations and desires. They are extremely happy together and will have a long relationship. They have a great deal in common. Both partners are very receptive and can intuit the moods of those around them. They have an innate knowing of each other's inner needs. Both partners are nurturing and sympathetic, ready to run to their partner at a moment's notice to help them out. They will create a peaceful home that will allow them to replenish their souls and deepen their emotional bond.Cancer Moon looks out for the material needs while Pisces Moon looks out for their spiritual needs. They understand each other extremely well. They share many similarities. They may be able to communicate with each other without speaking, knowing intuitively what the other replies. They both need to take care not to absorb the troubles and emotions of those around them. Their empathy can end up hurting them. This will be a very thoughtful, tender relationship of quiet fulfillment.
Pisces Moon ♓︎☽ ❤️ Leo Moon ♌︎☽
Pisces Moon and Leo Moon need to take care. One may feel they are always bending over backwards to make the other one happy. This may end up being a very unbalanced relationship. Even though there is a strong attraction, it may be very difficult to deal with the everyday routine of a long term relationship. Pisces Moon and Leo Moon do share some goals. They both find home and family very important. They just look at the world in very different ways. Leo Moon will run the show with their natural authority. This also fulfills their need to be the center of attention. Pisces Moon tends to be gentle and very receptive of other people's feelings. They will tend to overlook their own needs and desires to keep Leo happy. Leo Moon is warm, loud, boisterous and melodramatic. Pisces tends to feel victimized and full of melancholy. They may soak up some of Leo's confidence, however, which can be a good thing. They may both misunderstand the other because they tend to see things their way or how they want them to be. Leo is a bit narcissistic at times. In order to get what they want they may be loud or exaggerate. In order for this relationship to truly be balanced, Pisces needs to step up and pursue their own dreams. Leo needs to understand that Pisces is not a doormat that should acquiesce to their every whim. Pisces tends to reflect the feelings around them, so this can be good when Leo is in a great mood. It can be very bad when Leo is feeling down, as Pisces is normally on the down side anyway.

Once Pisces Moon and Virgo Moon learn to work together, their lives can run rather smoothly. Their shared introspection can help them to overcome adversity and they can divide the daily tasks according to their temperaments. They should have a lovely, nurturing home life once they iron out the kinks.
Pisces Moon ♓︎☽ ❤️ Libra Moon ♎︎☽
Pisces Moon and Libra Moon share a lot of romance and desire, but they really don't have a lot more in common. If they are willing to work at their relationship, they may find that they each have just enough to fulfill the other. The relationship could also end up being so sweet that neither partner can stomach it. Libra Moon is social, diplomatic, and likes everything to be in order. Pisces Moon is sensitive, intuitive and disorganized. Both like a peaceful environment without conflict. To make the most of this relationship, Libra must go into it with willing to see everything that goes on. Pisces must be very honest. If they don't do this, Libra will diplomatically dismiss things that Pisces does, and Pisces will subtly manipulate with their emotional scenes. If they can bring a sense of moderation to the relationship, they may make it work. Pisces Moon has a tendency towards excess in all things, so this may be difficult. Pisces seems to prefer relationships where one partner gives to the other, while Libra wants it equal and balanced, with both partners in a give and take as needed.
⭐️ Pisces Moon ♓︎☽ ❤️ Scorpio Moon ♏︎☽
Pisces Moon and Scorpio Moon are made for each other. They understand each other well and respect their differences. They work together well and will likely have an emotional, long lasting relationship.Both Pisces Moon and Scorpio Moon are capable of moody behavior. This may cause upset if not openly discussed.Both are great manipulators and their secrets and emotional intimacy will bind these two together deeply.
Pisces Moon ♓︎☽ ❤️ Sagittarius Moon ♐︎☽
Pisces Moon and Sagittarius Moon will need to make some compromises to work out their relationship. They are not very well matched. Sagittarius' enthusiasm can be overwhelming for Pisces. These two do have several things in common. They both tend to make promises they have no way of keeping, they are both generous and have no idea of what boundaries are in relationships, and they both may develop keen intuition. Sagittarius Moon is a bit blunt and overbearing for the sensitive Pisces. Sagittarius doesn't even realize that their bluntness can hurt the feelings of others. Pisces Moon is shy and would rather stay at home than go out to a loud party. They do tend to attract each other, however. The optimism that is natural to Sagittarius powers up Pisces imagination. It is hard for them to make anything long lasting from this relationship, though, due to their incompatibilities. Both partners tend to be on the dreamy side, and may have a hard time getting anything accomplished. Tender Pisces isn't cut out for the brash, adventurous world of Sagittarius. Sagittarius can be very insensitive, especially when they are caught up in their enthusiastic plans for their next adventure. To make this relationship work, both partners would have to be willing to make definite changes and be willing to stick to them.
Pisces Moon ♓︎☽ ❤️ Capricorn Moon ♑︎☽
Pisces Moon and Capricorn Moon are about as different as they come. They can be loyal friends, but they approach the world in such different ways that it is hard for them to come together as a couple. While Capricorn is detached emotionally, Pisces is raw emotion, open to any influences that may be nearby. Capricorn is responsible and hard working. They are focused and loyal. Pisces is irresponsible, dreamy and unorganized. They are passive and moody. Pisces Moon has an idealistic approach to relationships, while Capricorn Moon wants a firm commitment. Pisces can be clingy, which Capricorn may find extremely annoying. In rare instances, these two can be compatible if they can work out their differences. In these cases, they are able to be complementary to each other. Capricorn can take care of the outside world, while Pisces learns some responsibility and takes care of the home front. Capricorn can teach Pisces how to make the most of their creativity, while Pisces can teach Capricorn how to release their emotions. When this pairing works, it goes to show that with enough love and determination, any couple has the potential to work.
Pisces Moon ♓︎☽ ❤️ Aquarius Moon ♒︎☽
Pisces Moon and Aquarius Moon have a good chance of making a go of a relationship. If one of them is willing to be more tolerant, their chances get even better. Both partners need to work on the relationship to get the most out of it. Outgoing Aquarius Moon loves to join groups and feel a part of social change. Introverted Pisces is gentle, moody and reclusive. Both partners want to help humanity, but in different ways. Aquarius Moon will want to create sweeping social change, while Pisces Moon will want to help out one person at a time. Aquarius may not be able to get in touch with Pisces' feelings; Pisces is emotionally open to every little nuance around them and is affected by it. Pisces may find Aquarius too detached to suit them. Aquarius will most likely find Pisces excessively emotional. Their vastly different ways of approaching the world may be too much for them to overcome. If they both work on the relationship, they could make good strides. Aquarius can learn some empathy from Pisces, and Pisces can learn to gain some distance and clarity from Aquarius. They can learn to work together on their common interests and branch out from there.
Pisces Moon ♓︎☽ ❤️ Pisces Moon ♓︎☽
Pisces Moon paired with another Pisces Moon will share many of the same interests and understandings, but this does not serve to make them overly compatible. Pisces is very dreamy and moody
double that and you see what happens. When both are moody at the same time, it is magnified and they may find it difficult to move on. While they may make the best of chums with a close, sympathetic relationship, a double Pisces Moon couple may end up being too emotional to accomplish much of anything. When it is good, they are very perceptive and can gain a powerful psychic ability. They can be artistic and imaginative, but because of their disorganization and lack of discipline, they may not be able to utilize these skills and talents. They may both end up losing themselves in drugs or other methods of escapism if they are not careful. They can also be taken advantage of easily because of their giving natures. Their compassion can be both a blessing and a curse because of that. Pisces cannot help themselves when they see someone who needs their help. They are not good at setting boundaries, and with both partners in the same boat, they may end up completely run down and drained. If a double Pisces Moon couple takes the time to work things out and build up their skills in organization and discipline, they may be able to make it work. They will be able to capitalize on their good qualities and overcome their negative ones.

When the Moon is found in Pisces, the emotions are likely to be pronounced. Pisces is the final sign of The Zodiac, and has much to do with sensitivity – to oneself, to other people, and to the mysterious, unseen forces that shape our world. With the Moon in Pisces, you are likely to be a highly impressionable individual – strongly influenced by the compassionate, creative, imaginative, romantic and idealistic aspects of life.On an instinctive level, you may have a natural affinity for the abstract or intuitive. This affinity can be a blessing, or a curse. You are likely to be able to sense the hidden or energetic levels of life, soaking up atmospheres as if you were a sponge. Your feelings about people and situations are likely to be immediate, accurate and intense. Understanding that your feelings provide valuable information, but can lead you astray sometimes, means that you will need to learn to recognize the difference between an intuitive response to something, and an emotional reaction that is based on your response to whatever is going on. Your imagination is likely to be very strong. You can find all manner of nuance in many life experiences. You are likely to respond to all manner of visual and emotional stimuli, which work to jettison you off into the many worlds of your imagination. Here you can find recreation and release. Whether you prefer to escape into a comfortable world of your own daydreams, or immerse yourself in art, anything that works to activate your imagination feels like coming home, and enables you to nurture your soul. This is a great advantage if you turn your talents to anything creative. Most often, the Piscean energy is expressed through abstract art forms, so anything around music, film, photography, dance, drama, poetry or painting may appeal. Even if you do not practice as an artist, you are likely to be strongly in tune with certain art-forms. Because this sign is highly creative, opportunity awaits those of you who find an outlet for your vivid imaginations. You may also be highly intuitive, possessing innate psychic abilities if other factors in the chart are also present. You may have had a powerful sense of knowing from an early age, experienced prophetic dreams, or perhaps grown up in an environment where the women in particular were known for their psychic or healing abilities. Understanding how your “sixth sense” operates is your natural birthright, and one you can readily develop if you give it the time and respect it deserves.Pisces is a sign of mystery, and humanity is not yet at a stage of evolution to understand all that Life has to offer. We do not understand our intuition fully, nor do we understand all the dimensions which exist within our Universe. Accordingly, you may have a natural curiousity about the subtle forces which shape our lives which is beyond what other people understand. Your instinctive awareness that there is more than just the “Here and Now” gives you an innate acceptance of things which cannot be immediately explained. This sign is one of spiritual seeking. You may have a profound and personal relationship with your own experience of The Divine. This does not mean you are religious, and you may not follow any particular faith. But you are likely to feel in touch with something greater than yourself, and in your own way seek to live that experience out. As mentioned, Pisces is a sign of great sensitivity. Your life will be directed by feeling, and by the sense perhaps of an unseen “Hand” guiding it all. Love and relationship may be an area of life where you go through many lessons. Pisces is a very romantic sign. You may have a tendency to enter relationships or new experiences with rose-coloured glasses. Putting others on a pedestal means that invariably they must “fall off”. Yet you have the capacity for a rare kind of loving, based on the unconditional acceptance of others for who they are. Sometimes you experience an exalted kind of love that will bring you an experience of true union with another. At other times, you may need to wake up to harsh realities, seeing others for who they are, and not who you would like them to be. With the Moon here you need to be in relationship with others who respect your sensitivity. For this to happen, you must first respect it in yourself.Most often, women with the Moon in Pisces have an easier time, for women are allowed to explore and develop their sensitive sides. For men, this placement can be more difficult. Many men are taught from an early age to repress their emotional lives, leading to patterns of fear and self-denial in later life where the attempt to shut down and deny their intuitive side. Sometimes men born with the Moon in Pisces fear their natural sensitivities. They react badly to the idea of anything ‘otherwordly’, as this would mean opening up to parts of themselves that have long been locked away. The sign of Pisces carries within it an innate urge to escape – to leave behind the mundane aspects of life. Accordingly, you may find you have the need to withdraw periodically from the demands of life, taking time to replenish your highly sensitive emotional system. If you do not recognize when the time to withdraw has come, you may find yourself unable to cope with the demands of life. Withdrawal or escape is an important part of the Piscean experience. Whether you do this consciously or unconsciously will be entirely up to you.A conscious manifestation of this desire to escape could involve taking time to be alone, retreating from the world for contemplation, meditation, purification and renewal. Spending time by the water, or in nature, is especially soothing. Natural environments help release the emotional and psychological influences you have absorbed from others, and process those experiences that are necessary for your growth. As Pisces is a sign of compassion, you may also experience self-renewal through acts of kindness to others, consciously offering your compassionate nature in selfless acts of service to others. The trick here will be in learning not to take on more than your fair share. Giving of your self is a natural response, but you may need to learn when enough is enough. Sometimes those born with the Moon in Pisces need to recognize boundaries, so that their generous and compassionate qualities are not taken advantage of. An unconscious manifestation of the urge to escape would be more literal. This is usually characterized by a person who seeks to escape from the demands of this world through addiction, drugs or alcohol, through becoming dependent on some kind of government or welfare system, or losing themselves by becoming the victim of someone or something. Sometimes those born with the Moon in Pisces unconsciously become sick, vulnerable or destitute. However the escape is experienced, there is often an underlying feeling of not being able to cope in the world.However it manifests, the urge to escape is almost always about seeking purification, restoration and release on an emotional level. Becoming conscious of underlying motives and needs will help greatly in understanding the complexities of such a sensitive emotional nature. Recognizing that the need to escape embodies a desire to merge oneself back with the source of “All That Is” can help set up constructive paths to become involved in life again, through which a return to consciousness can occur. Born with the Moon in Pisces, you are likely to have an innate need to find outlets for your acute sensitivity. You are likely to be drawn to the romantic, creative, compassionate, service-oriented or spiritual dimensions of life. Your natural ability to sense what is really going on is your best asset but possibly your greatest stumbling block. By learning to respect your own nature, you see clearly the people and situations that will give you the respect that you deserve. Yours is a loving heart, looking for union with another. In Love you will discover your biggest reward, and the most worthy reason to sacrifice.

Scorpio Moon ♏︎☽ ❤️ Taurus Moon ♉︎☽
Scorpio Moon ♏︎☽ ❤️ ♏︎☽ Gemini Moon ♊︎☽
Scorpio Moon ♏︎☽ ❤️ Virgo Moon ♍︎☽
Scorpio Moon ♏︎☽ ❤️ Libra Moon ♎︎☽

Born with the Moon in Capricorn, you are likely to be innately responsible, pragmatic and measured in the ways that you respond. Capricorn is an Earth sign, and so pertains to the tangible and practical dimensions of life. It is also known as a Cardinal sign, which implies a need to take action. When practicality and activity combine, the urge to master material resources is usually present. With the Moon in Capricorn, you are likely to have an innately serious and responsible nature, seeking to make the most of whatever resources you have at your disposal. Responsibility, and all this entails, will probably form a background theme in your life. You may have had to step into a position of responsibility early in life, or received strong impressions from your parents (most usually mother) about the need to live up to certain expectations in life. You may feel a deep sense of duty around supporting others, and will naturally be drawn to areas of life expression which allow you to demonstrate a capacity to accept responsibility. You are likely to have the ability to assist and nurture others in practical ways, and will often be seen as “the capable one” who can be relied on to find realistic solutions to current problems. The Moon is said to be in “detriment” in this sign, implying that easy and spontaneous emotional connections are not your forte. You are likely to be self-conscious in your emotional approach, and may appear reserved at first, taking time to warm to others and develop closeness. While you may have a huge heart, you do not give it away easily. You need time to get to know others and work out how you really feel about them. It is important to understand how serious or worthwhile any emotional involvement may be before you get involved. Whilst to others this may seem calculating, for you it is just a realistic assessment of the fact that emotional ties can be burdensome, and taking yourself seriously involves assessing exactly where a situation is taking you, and if that is where you want to be. Yet this pragmatism can also be a source of strength. It can give you stability and create a realistic attitude to life’s emotional ebbs and flows. On the up side, this means that for those you hold near and dear, you will be consistent, strong and true. You have an innate ability to follow through on what you say, and are likely to value greatly the worth of family, continuity and emotional commitment. On the down side however, your pragmatic approach to feelings and relationships may lead to a tendency for projecting to others a cold and unavailable nature, concerned more with the bottom line of what you will ‘get’ from a connection, rather than just being able to enjoy closeness and intimacy for what it is. The sign of Capricorn relates to foundations, structures and the gift of Time. You are likely to value tradition, status, and social position. You will require from others the same level of responsibility and capacity that you demonstrate for yourself, and will respect people or situations that demonstrate longevity and persistence. On some level, you are likely to feel most secure when you have solid structures and foundations around you. To this end you may be somewhat conservative, with strong ambitions for yourself based on recognition and accomplishment. Achievements carry powerful emotional overtones for you, and you are likely to feel an inward need to live up to being the best that you can be. You may have a need to prove yourself ‘out there’ in the world as a concrete example of your inner values, so reflecting an aptitude for responsibility and commitment. Alternately, you may have a much more private idea of what success and accomplishment mean to you. You may be less concerned with worldly success and more concerned with doing the best you can on a more personal level. You may set high standards for personal development, with a profound sense of integrity and authenticity. Whether your focus is material or spiritual, you are likely to be committed to making sure that you achieve the things that you expect of yourself. If other features of your chart imply more freedom-loving or unconventional qualities, you may be at odds with other voices within your psyche. If you find yourself struggling between the need to fulfill obligations and the need to be free just remember that your innate capacity to commit and demonstrate responsibility can be expressed in many different ways. As long as you live up to your own expectations in terms of what responsibility means to you, you will feel emotionally stable and secure. From this stable base, you can spin off into any form of expression you so choose. You are likely to be highly self-sufficient and contained, but need to remember that sometimes we build strong emotional foundations by sharing our strengths and weaknesses, talents short-comings and abilities with those around us. You are no doubt very capable, but need to be mindful of a tendency to isolate yourself upon your own mountaintop of duty and responsibility. You may have an innate tendency to expect that no one else will be as thorough as you are, and so take on far more than you need to, at times even taking from others duties that are rightfully theirs. Try not to look down upon “mere mortals’ less capable than you, but realize that your strengths and capabilities have been earned through hard work and sacrifice, yet only count for something if you can share them with someone else. In sharing responsibilities, you will achieve the position of respect and responsibility that you so naturally deserve. In letting others demonstrate capability and endurance, you help build a fertile platform upon which material stability is achievedWith the Moon placed here, you are likely to be innately concerned with how you appear publicly. You tend to be aware of the value of reputation and protocol, and so, will avoid doing anything publicly that may diminish you in the eyes of others. Because you recognize the value of a good reputation, you will strive to appear capable, contained and in-charge. Whilst this is useful in terms of earning respect, it may mean that you avoid extending yourself at times because you will not let yourself learn. You can set such high standards of achievement for yourself that you expect to be able to master whatever you attempt almost as soon as you begin. Rather than learning through a process of trial and error, you will stop yourself doing things unless you are already innately competent. It is important that you recognize the need for learning or apprenticeship along the road to mastery. Showing others your vulnerabilities will not hurt you as much as you may fear, and can in fact help them appreciate your achievements more through seeing your commitment to high standards through hard work. Finally, there may also be a need to release old, crystallized emotional patterns or unconscious fears through subconscious re-programming. Because the Moon represents the genetic or emotional framework through which we view experiences and learn about the world, there may be a tendency to ‘get stuck’ when that frame is inclined to endure and ‘hold-on’. In this sense, unconscious fears, limitations and restrictions may prevent you from opening up to an easy, spontaneous flow of emotion. Old habits and memories can prevent you from connecting with the here and now. There may be inhibitions around revealing the true extent of your feelings, and you may keep others at a distance so they never know how much you really need them. Developing empathy, the ability to self-nurture and kindness for yourself are highly recommended, This will help dissolve any old and unwanted emotional patterns, and open the door for greater vulnerability and closeness with others. You may find tactile or emotional therapies useful for you if find this hard to achieve. Because you are used to demonstrating fortitude and resilience, you may find it hard to soften and let others in. But when you share your capacity to accept responsibility and build solid foundations in life, you are rewarded with full appreciation from those who can understand the depth of your emotional commitment.
Look out for Part II soon!

The Different Rules Of Summer
One
‘The problem with my life was that it was someone else’s idea.’
‘One summer night I fell asleep, hoping the world would be different when I woke.’
‘As far as I was concerned, the sun could have melted the blue right off the sky. Then the sky could be as miserable as I was’
‘Monday, June fifteenth, 1987!’
‘For the music to be over so soon. For the music to be over when it had just begun. That was really sad.’
Two
‘“Fifteen-year-olds don’t qualify as people.”’
‘I hated being volunteered. The problem with my life was that it was someone else’s idea.’
‘I decided to go swimming at the Memorial Park pool. It was a small idea. But at least the idea was mine.’
Four
‘All on my own. I was in love with that phrase.’
‘Not that I really believed in my mom’s phase theory. It didn’t sound like an explanation - it sounded like an excuse.’
‘It was better to be alone and miserable. It was better to drown.’
‘That’s when I heard his voice, kind of squeaky. “I can teach you how to swim.”’
‘I had a rule that it was better to be bored by yourself than to be bored with someone else.’
‘I kind of liked his voice. He sounded like he had a cold, you know, like he was about to lose his voice.’
‘“What are you allergic to?” “The air,” he said. That made me laugh.’
‘“My name’s Dante,” he said. That made me laugh harder. “Sorry,” I said. “It’s okay. People laugh at my name.” “No, no,” I said. “See, it’s just that my name’s Aristotle.”’
‘We laughed again. We couldn’t stop. I wondered what it was we were laughing about. Was it just our names? Were we laughing because we were relieved? Were we happy? Laughter was another one of life’s mysteries.’
‘“I was ashamed of myself for being ashamed of myself. I didn’t like that.”’
‘I liked the way he said Nice to meet you, Ari. Like he meant it.’
‘Water was something he loved, something he respected. He understood its beauty and its dangers. He talked about swimming as if it were a way of life. He was fifteen years old. Who was this guy?’
‘He was disciplined and tough and knowledgeable and he didn’t pretend to be stupid and ordinary. He was neither of those things.’
‘He was funny and focused and fierce. I mean the guy could be fierce. And there wasn’t anything mean about him. I didn’t understand how you could live in a mean world and not have any of that meanness rub off on you. How could a guy live without some meanness?’
‘Dante became one more mystery in a universe full of mysteries.’
‘I had this idea that Dante read because he liked to read. Me, I read because I didn’t have anything else to do.’
‘We laughed. We always laughed.’
‘Then I got this idea. “Let’s ride the bus and see what’s out there.”’
‘We both fell in love with riding the bus.’
‘That really made me smile. I’d never heard anyone say that about their parents. I mean, no one was crazy about their parents. Except Dante.’
‘We made up stories about the other bus riders.
For all we knew, they were writing stories about us.’
‘Boys. I watched them. Studied them.’
‘But for some reason the whole thing fascinated me, how you could get a heart to start again. I didn’t quite understand the science of it.’
‘Why couldn’t he just talk? How was I supposed to know him when he didn’t let me? I hated that.’
‘I wasn’t wildly popular. How could I be? In order to be wildly popular you had to make people believe that you were fun and interesting. I just wasn’t that much of a con artist.’
‘I was good in a fight. So people left me alone. I was mostly invisible. I think I liked it that way. And then Dante came along.’
Five
‘He seemed like a man who was in love with being alive.’
‘Dante’s father didn’t have any darkness in him. Even his black eyes seemed to be full of light.’
‘I’d heard that phrase, nice to meet you, a thousand times. When Dante had said it to me, he’d sounded real. But when I said it, I felt stupid and unoriginal. I wanted to hide somewhere.’
‘It was a big room with a high ceiling and wood floors and lots of old windows to let in the light. There was stuff everywhere. Clothes spread all over the floor, a pile of old albums, books scattered around, legal pads with stuff written on them, Polaroid photographs, a couple of cameras, a guitar without any strings, sheet music, and a bulletin board cluttered with notes and pictures.’
‘“Inscrutable.” I knew when I went home, I would have to look up the word.’
‘I felt like such a fraud, using that word. Maybe that was the thing about me. I wasn’t a real boy. I was a fraud.’
‘That was interesting - that he had secrets.’
‘Some poems were easier than others. Some were inscrutable. I was thinking that maybe I did know the meaning of that word.’
‘I got to thinking that poems were like people. Some people you got right off the bat. Some people you just didn’t get - and never would get.’
‘Dante’s world had order.’
‘He was so perfect in his newly organized room, the western sun streaming in, his face in the light and the book in his hand as if it was mean to be there, in his hands, and only his hands.’
‘I liked his voice as he read the poem as if he had written it: He’s dead the dog won’t have to sleep on the potatoes anymore to keep them from freezing he’s dead the old bastard-’
‘When Dante read the word “bastard” he smiled. I knew he loved saying it because it was a word he was not allowed to use, a word that was banned. But here in his room, he could read that word and make it his.’
‘I didn’t worry about understanding them. I didn’t care about what they meant. I didn’t care because what mattered is that Dante’s voice felt real. And I felt real.’
‘Until Dante, being with other people was the hardest thing in the world for me. But Dante made talking and living and feeling seem like all those things were perfectly natural. Not in my world, they weren’t.’
‘That afternoon, I learned two new words. “Inscrutable.” And “friend.”’
‘Words were different when they lived inside you.’
Six
‘My dad glanced at my mom. I think they were smiling at each other. Yeah, they were thinking, he’s finally found a friend. I hated that.’
‘He and my mother exchanged glances. My mom and dad did a lot of that. They liked to talk without talking. I made up things about what they said to each other with those looks.’
‘I could almost see his mind working as he thought of a convincing argument. A convincing argument that was true.’
‘See, I didn’t get my dad. I could never guess how he would react to things. Not ever.’
Seven
‘“You are smart, Ari. Very smart. And anyway, being smart isn’t everything. People just make fun of you. My dad says it’s all right if people make fun of you. You know what he said to me? He said, ‘Dante, you’re an intellectual. That’s who you are. Don’t be ashamed of that.’”’
‘I noticed his smile was a little sad. Maybe everyone was a little sad. Maybe so.’
‘“Ari, I’m trying not to be ashamed.”’
‘I knew what it was like to be ashamed. Only, Dante knew why. And I didn’t.’
‘Dante. I really liked him. I really, really liked him.’
Eight
‘And because of that book, I learned something new about my father. He’d studied art before he joined the Marines. That seemed not to fit with the picture I had of my father. But I liked the idea.’
‘So I just collected clues. Watching my father read that book was another clue in my collection. Some day all the clues would come together. And I would solve the mystery of my father.’
Ten
‘Somewhere away from the lights of the city. Light pollution. That’s what Dante called it. Dante seemed to know a great deal about light pollution.’
‘We all wanted to see what Dante was seeing.’
‘When I looked through the telescope, Dante began explaining what I was looking at. I didn’t hear a word. Something happened inside me as I looked out into the vast universe. Through that telescope the world was closer and larger than I’d ever imagined. And it was all so beautiful and overwhelming and - I don’t know - it made me aware that there was something inside of me that mattered.’
‘As Dante was watching me search the sky through the lens of a telescope, he whispered, “Someday, I’m going to discover all the secrets of the universe.” That made me smile. “What are you going to do with all those secrets, Dante?” “I’ll know what to do with them,” he said. “Maybe change the world.” I believed him.”
‘Dante Quintana was the only human being I’d ever known that could say a thing like that. I knew that he would never grow up and say stupid things like, “a girl is like a tree.”’
‘“Too much light pollution,” he said. “Too much light pollution,” I answered.”’
Eleven
‘One more important fact about Dante: He didn’t like wearing shoes.’
‘I don’t know why but I just started laughing. The truth is that I got to like the war Dante was having with shoes.’
‘“I don’t like them. That’s it. That’s all. There’s no big secret here. I was born not liking them.”’
‘“You know, wearing shoes is an unnatural act. That’s my basic premise.”’
‘Sometimes he talked like a scientist or a philosopher.’
‘He reached over and unlaced my tennis shoes as he talked. “Take off your shoes, Ari. Live a little.”’
‘“Did anybody ever tell you that sometimes you talk like a lunatic who speaks perfect English?”’
‘“No,” Dante said, “the fun is in the game. It’s everywhere.”’
‘“And not only that - what if a car comes along?” “We move out of the way. And besides, we could play in the park.” “The street’s more fun,” I said. “Yeah, the street’s more fun.” We agreed on something.’
‘I looked back at him. I knew I didn’t have a chance. I knew we were going to play the game according to his rules. But the truth is, it mattered to Dante. And to me, it didn’t matter so much.’
‘“You’re the only kid in the entire universe who could come up with a game as an excuse to beat the holy crap out of his tennis shoes.”’
‘I studies Dante’s face as he threw his tennis shoes with all his strength. His father was right. Dante had found a game as an excuse to beat the crap out of his tennis shoes.’
Twelve
‘Dante was staring at his feet. That made me smile.’
‘He had this thing about telling the truth. He was as bad as my dad. Except my dad kept the truth to himself. And Dante believed you had to tell the truth in words. Out loud.Tell someone.’
‘I laughed. I got to thinking that one of my jobs in the world was to laugh at Dante’s jokes. Only Dante didn’t really say things to be funny. He was just being himself.’
‘He looked crazed. Really crazed.’
‘I guess I was just afraid these guys were going to hurt Dante. I just said what I felt I had to say.’
‘Dante looked down at the dead bird. A few minutes ago he’d been mad as hell. Now, he looked like he was going to cry.’
‘We both knew that we were mad for different reasons.’
‘And then he started to cry. I didn’t know what to do. I just stood there and watched him.’
‘He tossed his tennis shoes across the street with all his might and anger. He wiped the tears from his face.’
‘“Were you scared?” he asked. “No.” “I was.” “So?”’
‘“Birds exist to teach us things about the sky.”
‘I wanted to tell him not to cry anymore, tell him that what those boys did to that bird didn’t matter. But I knew it did matter. It mattered to Dante. And, anyway, it didn’t do any good to tell him not to cry because he needed to cry. That’s the way he was.’
‘Dante was crying again. And I felt mean because I didn’t feel like crying. I didn’t really feel anything for the bird. It was a bird. Maybe it didn’t deserve to get shot by some stupid kid whose idea of fun was shooting at things. But it was still just a bird.’
‘I was harder than Dante. I think I’d tried to hide that hardness from him because I’d wanted him to like me. But now he knew. That I was hard. And maybe that was okay. Maybe he could like the fact that I was hard just as I liked the fact that he wasn’t hard.’
‘There was a tear running down his cheek. It seemed like a river in the light of the setting sun.’
‘I wondered what it was like, to be the kind of guy that cried over the death of a bird.’
‘As I walked home I thought about birds and the meaning of their existence. Dante had an answer. I didn’t. I didn’t have any idea as to why birds existed. I’d never even asked myself the question.’
‘Dante’s answer made sense to me. If we studied birds, maybe we could learn to be free. I think that’s what he was saying. I had a philosopher’s name. What was my answer? Why didn’t I have an answer?’
‘And why was it that some guys had tears in them and some had no tears at all? Different boys lived by different rules.’
‘I thought of Dante and wondered about him. And it seemed to me that Dante’s face was a map of the world. A world without any darkness. Wow, a world without any darkness. How beautiful was that?’

Chapter 37: Not The End
During the last few days before we left for Chicago, my room was almost as blank and empty as Ari’s. My bed was still there, along with my empty bookshelves and desk and comfy reading chair, but mostly everything else that made the room mine had been boxed up in storage or packed up to take with us. It was kind of weird, but kind of peaceful too. I sort of understood why Ari liked his minimalist (i.e. nonexistent) interior decorating strategy. My head felt clearer those last few days than it had since the accident. A grad student was going to be living in my room next year and I made sure to leave a little note for them warning that birds liked to hang out on the window sill but it wasn’t a big deal – they were completely harmless but sometimes a little noisy.
The day before we left, my parents and I went over to Ari’s for dinner. I know that our parents had all met each other before because of the accident, but this was the first time we were all together purely socially, like one big family. Even though the occasion was sad, I wasn’t sad that night, not really. I liked how well our parents got along. My dad and Ari’s dad hit it off like gangbusters and spent the whole night drinking beer (blech) and talking politics. Our moms cooked together and talked in Spanish.
After dinner, Ari and I hung out on the porch. We weren’t talking much but I was okay with it. It was peaceful, like my blank room. I took mental snapshots of all of us together in my head to remember for forever.
“Your sketch pad is under my bed. Will you get it for me?” Ari said, out of nowhere.
It took me by surprise. I’d almost forgotten about the sketch pad I’d given him in the hospital. I had a flashback to how he looked that day hooked up to his hospital bed, with his double casts and banged up face and cloudy, pain-filled eyes. My stomach clenched at the memory. He was so much better now, I reassured myself. His arm was healed, he had crutches and not a wheelchair, he was going to be fine. But it didn’t make the queasy feeling in my stomach go away.
I almost told him I didn’t want to get the sketch pad. Showing people my artwork still embarrassed me most of the time. But I had given the sketchbook to him as a gift and it would be weird of me to refuse to look at it now with him.
I nodded and went inside to his room to get it. It was right under the bed, like he said it would be. His journal was under the bed, too. When I saw it, my heart slammed into my chest. I picked up his journal, just held it in my hands for a few seconds. It had a soft leather cover, smooth to the touch. Almost without intending to, I opened it up to a random page. My eyes quickly scanned the words:
I don’t like being fifteen.
I didn’t like being fourteen.
I didn’t like being thirteen.
I didn’t like being twelve.
I didn’t like being eleven.
Ten was good. I liked being ten. I don’t know why but I had a very good year when I was in fifth grade.
The fifth grade was very good. Mrs. Pendragon was a great teacher and for some reason, everyone seemed to like me. A good year. An excellent year. Fifth grade. But now, at fifteen, well, things are a little awkward. My voice is doing funny things and I keep running into things. My mom says my reflexes are trying to keep up with the fact that I’m growing so much.
I don’t care much for this growing thing.
My body’s doing things I can’t control and I just don’t like it.
I snapped his journal shut without reading any more and tucked it hastily back under the bed. I felt like a criminal. My heart was still beating so fast. I shouldn’t have just done that. I went to the bathroom and put some cool water on my face. It’s not that I didn’t desperately want to know what was inside Ari’s head. I did more than anything. I wanted to know if he still hated being fifteen and what other changes his body had gone through that he would never ever talk to me about. I wanted to know if he’d truly forgiven me, if he thought we’d be friends when I came back, if there was an inkling of a chance he liked me in the same way as I liked him. If he loved me, too. But it wasn't right, reading his journal without him knowing. I couldn’t betray his confidence like that ever again. His thoughts and trust had to be freely given, like I’d given him my sketchbook.
After my cheeks had cooled down, I went back outside to the porch and handed him my sketchbook. I was ashamed to look him in the eye.
“I have a confession to make,” he said.
“What?” I asked. My heart was still going wildly fast. I had no idea what he might say. Had he read my journal, too?
“I haven’t looked at it.”
Oh. I didn’t know what to say. My feelings were a little hurt that he’d never bothered to look at what I’d given him. But considering what I’d just done, I really had no ground to stand on for what constitutes being a good friend or not.
“Can we look at them together?” he said.
I didn't say yes, but I didn't say no, either. I was caught in some sort of silent limbo. He opened the sketchbook. The first drawing was a self-portrait of me reading, which I thought was a bit pretentious in hindsight. The next one was of my dad reading, which was not so bad. Then there was another self-portrait, more close up, just of my face.
“You look sad in this one.”
“Maybe I was sad that day.”
I remembered the day I drew that one. It was right after my parents had told me we’d probably be moving to Chicago.
“Are you sad now?”
Yes. Yes and no. Yes, I was sad to be leaving. But meeting and becoming friends with Ari this summer made me happier than I’d been in the longest time. I didn’t answer his question and we kept flipping through the book. We came to the sketches I’d done of Ari in his room, the same day I’d given him the drawing of his rocking chair. There were five or six sketches of him sitting on his bed, reading. Some close ups of his hands and his eyes. One of him sleeping. My face flushed as Ari traced his fingers over the page. I was a little embarrassed at how seriously he was studying each and every picture. I was glad he couldn’t peer into my head and know what I’d been thinking while I was drawing him. It was too embarrassing. But I was honored and a little humbled, too, to share this part of me with him.
“They’re honest,” Ari said.
“Honest?”
“Honest and true. You’re going to be a great artist someday.”
“Someday,” I said. I thought I might cry, but I didn’t. I cleared my throat and said, “Listen, you don’t have to keep the sketchbook.”
“You gave it to me. It’s mine.”
He looked at me and the tension I’d felt since I snuck a peak in his journal finally subsided. We looked through the remaining sketches and sat on the porch together as night fell and the sky changed from blue to dusty pink to orange. The air smelled like a future rainstorm.
My parents came outside and told us it was time to head out, we had a big day tomorrow. My dad gave Ari a kiss on the cheek and my mom touched his chin in that inscrutable way she has.
I hugged Ari.
He hugged me back.
It was a little awkward with his crutches, but I don’t think either of us cared.
I touched the back of his neck, his hair. It was as soft as I always thought it would be.
“See you in a few months,” I said into his neck.
“Yeah,” he said.
“I’ll write,” I said.
I didn’t cry, not then. I didn’t cry until very late that night when I was alone in my empty room listening to the wild rain beat down. In that moment, holding my best friend close to me, feeling our bodies aligned, breathing him in and breathing in the smell of my last summer night in El Paso, I was the happiest boy in the universe. Because I knew I’d be back here again, with Ari. I knew this wasn’t the end of us.

Okay, so I mentioned in WBW that astrology is used more often than astronomy in this world? Like, for determining the future?
I study astrology as a hobby. I've stopped short of straight up making charts for my characters, but I've got their Big 3: Sun, Moon, and Rising signs.
For anyone who doesn't know, the Sun sign is usually what people mean when they ask about your sign. It generally determines who you are at your core.
Your Moon sign roughly corresponds to your body and emotional life, how you move through the world and respond to emotional upheaval.
Your Rising sign (to me) is the most important. It's who you declare yourself to be to others, the mask you wear, or how you act as an adult.
So in this world, children are generally asked what their Sun sign is, while adults are asked what their Rising sign is. In character answers under the cut.
"Hey Sere, what's your Rising?" "Hmm? Oh, it's Virgo," she replies, hardly looking up from her textbook. "C'mon, what does that mean? Y'know, in terms of your Sun and Moon." With a huff, she sets down her book, carefully marking the page and turning to Anya. "Well, my Sun is in Libra and my moon is in Scorpio. So, I'm a bit of a peacemaker, I'm more uptight on the outside, and my emotions are sometimes inscrutable even to myself. Does that answer your question?" "So is that why you're such a perfectionist?" "Well...yeah. That's the Virgo in play."
Anya turns to Leo. "And what about you, what's your Rising?" He chuckles, "No jokes about it being Leo?" "I'm trying ask a serious question here, man." "Alright, alright. Well, my Rising is Taurus. My Sun's in Sagittarius, though. Why do you ask?" "Just curious. What about your Moon?" "Oh. Um..." His hand comes up to massage at the back of his neck, a sure sign that he's feeling awkward. "Well, it's Cancer. Mi madre always said I was a softie." "So how does that relate to the other two?" "Well, Sadge is all about movement, it's part of why I got into martial arts. And Taurus is well known for being stubborn, but it's honestly more about security and comfort. I suppose it contributes to me seeming scary at first, too, now that I think about it. All together, I think of it as meaning that I spend a lot of my time out of my head and in my body, if that makes any sense? If not in the actual physicality of it, then in the emotional side. Oh, and I treat my friends like family." "That's for sure," Sere mutters.
"Okay Anya, your turn." "Easy. Rising is Sagittarius, Sun is Leo, Moon is Aries." The pair are silent for a moment, then bust up laughing. "Oh that is perfect!" Sere says, wiping away a tear. "What do you mean?" "Well, you're very forward, you like being the center of attention, and you run hot and cold with everyone you're with. Either you're 100% into them or 100% not." "Oh is that what that means?" Leo's having a hard time not breaking into laughter, but manages, "They're also all Fire signs, which fits you really well."
~~~
All in all, Sere and Leo are a great match. They click on a lot of levels, and will remain friends for life if something doesn't get in their way. However, they're both really sensitive, and not the best at communicating their feelings, but it's something they can work on and overcome in time. Anya gets exasperated with both of them because they're impatient, but they're still a good friend to the couple... once they get over themself. In particular, they tend to butt heads with Leo pretty often.
Thanks for the blorbo prompt!
OMG!!! On the new book you're reading????? Can you talk about what you like about it?? I've been hearing about it too but haven't gotten a chance to really find the book and read it.
Look Anon.
Look.
I’ve been hearing praise for this book for years on this site. But about the time that praise started really getting big, I was finishing college, starting a new job, kind of consumed with figuring out what the fuuuuck I was going to do with my life instead of what I’d kind of just always figured I’d do. (Then after that I was going on a pretty big journey of self discovery. Working two jobs. Started Grad School.) So I’ve just not had much time to sit down and read, and just… *shrugs*
But I kept hearing, all the time, how fucking fantastic and life-changing this book was. Never much about the plot of course. (Now I get why.) Just that everyone fucking loved Ari and Dante and the book was basically The Best Thing.
I was excited to get an excuse to finally read it with this assignment (five teen fiction novels to review). I decided to save it for last, because it was the one I was looking forward to reading, so I’d have to push through any others I didn’t enjoy to get to it (the last two I definitely had to do that). And then I started getting a bit nervous, because…well. You hear so much about how GREAT something is, you build up how it must be this GREAT experience in your head, and then sometimes it’s… not. It’s a let down.
I was worried that’d be the case here.
I was assured (many times by my friend @peonyfeather) that this was impossible.
Here’s what I’m going to tell you.
This book was nothing at all like I expected.
This book made me cry a bit.
This book made my heart and soul ache.
For Aristotle. For Dante. For myself, past me and current me.
I cried at the end. I asked my dear friend mentioned above why the hell I was crying, and she said “Sometimes life blesses you and you don’t know how to take it.” (I want to steal that and put it in my review, but I don’t think I can wing it lol.)
I spent all afternoon trying to think of the last time I finished a book and felt so touched and adrift with it. (I mean… it felt life-changing? But at the same time in such an odd way? Not like a “Oh man I understand now my whole world view has changed” way, but a… I don’t know. A hopeful way? A peaceful way? An achingly slightly melancholy but still happy way? I don’t even know, man. I decided the last time I’d felt so overwhelmed with this kind of confusion and love and aching after finishing a book was probably when I finished the fucking Lord of the Rings in elementary school. I mean other books and literature has touched me, but that’s the last time I could remember feeling this kind of depth of SENSATION of it.)
I don’t know if everyone would be as profoundly impacted by this novel. For example, if I had my mom or dad read it, I don’t know if they’d come away feeling as I do. I don’t know if my dad (the one who turned me to Lord of the Rings, the first thing that truly bound us together, that I can remember actually having an actual conversation of content about with my father) would come to me with tears in his eyes at the end and say “oh my god”, like I did to the room in general when I shut the book. I don’t think he would; I’m not too sure why, but maybe because I don’t think this story is “for” him.
I keep thinking about this book, turning it over and over and over in my mind. I keep getting emotional about it. Close to tears again. I’m not sure my heart’s stopped aching, really, since I finished it about three hours ago.
I can’t tell you what I like about it. I’m sorry. I’d have to say “everything” and I’d have to say “this book can’t be put into words that can properly contain and convey the beauty of it”. I’d have to steal a bit of a phrase from the book and say it’s maybe a bit “inscrutable” lol.
I can say that if you’ve been thinking of finding and reading it, I would suggest doing so. Check your library - it’s a Printz honor book, along with a couple other awards, so chances are high most libraries will have it on their shelves. (Librarians love books that make the Printz award list.) Find yourself somewhere quiet, and comfortable. Settle down. And just… lose yourself in this story.
And then please come back and let me know what you thought of it. I’ll probably still be here, overwhelmed and trying to reshape myself. :)
Liminal: The Binondo Phenomenon
By Charlene Enriquez
There’s always that weird in-between period in your life; like being a teenager, when you’re transitioning from child to adult. You realize that you don’t quite fit in your local playground, the swings are a bit too small or the seesaw too close to the ground -- but you also can’t enjoy recreational adult spaces like bars because you don’t quite fit in that scene also. It seems like the strings that guided you to act a certain way was abruptly cut off, and you must re-learn how to act again. This limbo is called a “liminal space”, a concept of “crossing over”, creating the feeling of having left something behind but you are not fully in something else. If you convert that phenomenon into a place, it would definitely be Ongpin, Binondo. It’s a confused mishmash of distinctly Chinese memorabilia shadowed by a flurry of Filipino conceptions.
Chinese red lanterns are strung all over the place, Chinese characters are present in signs and logos of establishments, and shops sell unique products of herbal medicine with inscrutable Chinese instructions. This is undercut by a huge Catholic cathedral where hundreds of Filipinos attend mass weekly, a number of eateries which sell Filipino viands and desserts, and vendors who sell fruits from our islands. The population is composed of Filipino-Chinese citizens -- Chinese-looking with accented Filipino tongues yet still know the ins and outs of Manila like the back of their hand. Of course, not everyone in the area is Fil-Chi; the people in the community have a huge number of Filipinos who aren’t distinctly mixed with Chinese blood. The whole place looked like a collision of two worlds -- like it doesn’t really know what it wants to be and it just happened to evolve into this creature of coalescing cultures.
We travelled to Ongpin on a jeep in a group of four. It was midday when we went down in front of Binondo Church, also known as the Minor Basilica of St. Lorenzo Ruiz. The area near its entrance was occupied by people in poverty: an old man with welts on his face asking for alms and a mother coaxing her three small kids playing with coins and sticks. The inside of the church was a stark contrast to the outside. Inside was a huge cavern, with a high ceiling supported by tall posts, creating wide arches. Images of heavenly glory covered the ceilings, atop the multi-colored metal chandeliers. A different kind of poverty permeated the people inside -- young and old men and women kneeling in fervent prayer by the pews, some standing by the Nazareno icon, others in line at the candle-lighting area to pray for their intentions. After saying our prayers, we took our exit to finally embark on our Binondo adventure. On the left and right of the Church were streets snaking into Chinatown behind it. Unsuspecting vehicles zipped past the Church, unaware of the hidden world behind it. We started our journey by entering the street at the Church’s right side, Ongpin St.
Our first stop was the Dragon Phoenix Enterprise, a shop selling an assortment of charms, gemstones, and golden statues of army generals, gods, and dragons. The pathway to the entrance was cluttered by figurines, Feng Shui books, and charms dangling by the doorway. The inside was even more stocked: with shelves after shelves of these goods. On the walls were calendars listing the different years of the Chinese Zodiac, with information on how one’s animal sign affects the wealth, relationships, and overall luck this 2019 Year of the Pig. Beside the glass case of gemstone jewelry were paragraphs explaining the “powers” of the gemstones -- bracelets that give good luck when gambling, enhance fertility or protect the wearer from danger. All in all, the shop was swarming with these items, leaving frustratingly narrow aisles in between shelves. We had to line up and enter the aisles one by one to get a proper look around. We also had to be very mindful of the space we take up, with figurines one elbow nudge away from tipping over the entire store. This shop aiming to sell Feng Shui-approved items was ironically cluttered, had dim lighting, and generally left no space for good luck to roam in -- an affront to Feng Shui principles. Maybe that’s the appeal of the place; that it doesn’t pretend to be the paragon of spiritual enlightenment, but still does enough to show it knows some things. A perfect in-between of the temporal and spiritual world. It doesn’t know whether it’s a treasure chest of good luck and prosperity or a stockpile of make-believe magical items. (Or maybe it knows but doesn’t really care.)
Exiting the shop, we were hit by the blazing noon sun, signalling the height of lunchtime. Relieved to finally be free from that cramped shop, we roamed around the dizzying streets of Ongpin that had restaurants everywhere. After being paralyzed by the amount of choices, we finally settled with Estero Fast Food, a karinderya right next to -- you guessed it -- an estero or canal. A short stairway led into a sort-of tunnel which housed a few eateries. Despite the dull concrete floors and, frankly, disgusting environment (I mean, it was right next to a canal…), it was surprisingly not unappetizing. A chain-link fence separated the canal from the area, and strung on the fence were potted plants. There was no smell either and the store booths obscured the view of the canal. The Estero booth displayed assorted raw meat on bowls: chicken, pork, beef, even salmon. The menu was expansive and more importantly, the prices were student-friendly! We ended up ordering salt and pepper chicken, beef with broccoli, shrimp with oyster sauce, and yang chow rice. The four of us only spent a little less than 200 pesos each for all that! The servings were huge enough for all of us (there were even leftovers), the meat soft and bursting with flavor. It was a hearty meal straddling the line between Filipino and Chinese karinderya cuisine, eliciting a full and cozy stomach.
A meal is not complete without dessert, and so we went on the hunt for Ongpin’s trademark mango sago. We asked two restaurants if they had it, only to be disappointed that there was none. We trudged on under the heat until we finally saw the famous Salido Restaurant! We excitedly hurried to the second floor where it was nestled and encountered creaky wooden steps and dim overhead lighting as if we were entering an abandoned place. The interior was quite old-looking. A tiled bar counter straight from the 80s, a supposedly white floor that’s now yellow due to age, and chipped wooden round tables taking up majority of the spacious restaurant. The aircon was broken, plus the TV and speakers seemed like they’ve been unused for a long time. At first glance, everything seemed drab because the slight yellowish tint in the lighting covered the place with a nostalgic sepia glow. The windows were tiny and few, so it was hard to tell what time of the day it was. It felt like a place your grandparents would describe as their hangout spot; like it was stuck in the past, withering away but still alive.
Interestingly, the store was filled with balding old men with their wives and a few adults (perhaps their children); we were the only young people in the shop. Most tables were exclusively old men. They were eating light meals with tea or coffee, conversing with each other. Maybe they were talking about their businesses or their grandchildren or the old days. (Old people love talking about that.) In contrast, the waiters and staff were pretty young and had smiles on their faces. Once our mango sago arrived, we asked the lady waiting on us about the history of Salido and she pointed us to the corner of the restaurant where an adult man was sitting alone, his framed eyes keenly trained on his phone. He apparently owned the place. He looked a bit intimidating, seemingly busy with his brows knit together. The lady just laughed and told us he’s kind. We gulped down the mango juice and sago. Truthfully, it was less sweet than I expected but that was probably because a lot of customers are old people. Afterwards, we approached the owner and introduced ourselves. He made us sit at his table and he was pretty warm towards us, letting go of his iPhone X once we joined him. His name was Arthur King, and he gave each of us his calling card as an introduction. He spoke to us in Filipino, with a lightly noticeable Chinese accent. He wasn’t that old; probably in his fifties. Once we’ve settled down, he jokingly asked if we were from the BIR asking about sales. We assured him we weren’t and proceeded to ask about his store and the history surrounding it. He launched the story of how his lolo set up Salido, originally a small turo-turo karinderya which eventually expanded into a restaurant. After World War 2 damaged his karinderya, it was rebuilt in the place where it stands now and continued to flourish, staying strong until today. Once we asked about his customers, he leaned forward and started to excitedly point at different people in the shop. “Ayan, may-ari siya ng Ace Hardware at ka-batch ko dati sa school. ‘Yung nandoon sa likod na natutulog? Jusko, lagi ‘yang nandito noong bata yan! Tumatambay at naglalasing dito hanggang gabi at may dala-dalang mga girlfriend!” He knew almost everyone and excitedly recounted each one’s story to us. He even bragged about Erap and Atienza being regulars as well, advising us to come by every Sunday if we wished to see them. Salido was indeed a place of the past stuck in the present. Arthur King and his friends (his knights at Salido’s round tables) willfully stuck around in the limbo of Salido, enjoying the last reminders of their young days with their old friends.
We left the store and saw that it was almost 4 in the afternoon. Time goes by faster when you’re in Binondo, I guess. We found our way through the labyrinth of streets, and finally found ourselves back at Binondo Church; this time, emerging from the opposite side of where we entered, the left-side Norberto Ty St. We went full circle and now we were back to the regular view of zipping jeepneys and fast-paced walkers, consumed by concerns of the present. Binondo gave us a needed break as we explored the mysterious behemoth of in-betweens. The in-betweens of Filipino and Chinese cuisine, of the spiritual and temporal world, and of the past and present. Different places with different purposes, but all under the same Binondo phenomenon. Visiting the places, it is evident that it doesn’t quite fit in both Filipino and Chinese cultures -- it’s like you left Manila but you’re not fully in China. Lost souls are sure to find a place amidst the dysphoric Binondo (and only for a few bucks).
