A hard sidelong glance is aimed at her, and an irritated muscle flexes in his jaw.  “----that’s not funny,” he replies, entirely serious. Dinah has plucked a nerve he doesn’t realize exists, one that ends in a tremulous note of fear. It volleys in his stomach with a sudden sickly force. 

“We stick to the plan,” he says firmly as methodical hands assemble the equipment they’ll need, locking the pieces together with angered speed.

The night hasn’t been kind, leaving them both a bit battered and likely to lick their wounds in private. It shows in the tired slump of his shoulders, the purpling of a bruise along his jaw. Her words catch him even more by surprise than the punch which had gifted those to him, however. 

A harmless expression yet her words carry a new weight since his confession, those burgeoning feelings turning uneasily in his chest even now. “You too,” he murmurs easily enough but his boots don’t carry him away, back towards his cycle parked in the alley. He stays rooted there in front of her, eyeing the dried trickle of blood beneath her hairline, even as the sky lightens over their heads.  Initiating touch isn’t his usual move, but a gloved hand raises, gingerly brushing her hair back to reveal a shallow but nasty looking laceration across her temple. “You should get that looked at.”

“Wh—no! God, no.” He was less offended and more genuinely disgusted by the thought because—well, as far as John was concerned he’d clearly make a terrible assassin if he was just making himself that obviously known.

“I know how bad this looks, trust me, but I’m lookin’ for something.” Case in point being the mess of garbage that was currently sticking to his trench coat and the fact that John, well, very likely smelled like a wet dog to boot.

No one ever said investigation was a clean business.
