One of the strongest points of Mass Effect, if not the strongest, is just how well written the characters are. From Shepard, to the squad, to the side characters like Anderson and Bakara, to barely-there NPCs like Ereba and Charr the lovers, Etarn Tiro the enthusiastic turian merchant, Kargesh the krogan who wanted a fish, Lia'Vael, the quarian who gets falsely accused of theft, and the Salarian who wants to buy a memento to his asari lover to remember him by once he's dead.

I feel like so many of them are memorable, and they all serve a purpose to the overall world building. The krogan show that they are not the violent thugs the galaxy has made them out to be. The salarian shows the struggle born out of building relationships with people of a species with a life expectancy so beyond your own. Lia'Vael illustrates what Tali says about the quarians being treated like second class citizens. Those small little side quests have a meaning and a purpose, it doesnt feel like they are Just There, and they add more to the lore of them game to those who care about that stuff.

Say hi to Clarence, a nervous French teacher working at Springfield Elementary School (who sometimes does extra hours at the library)! It was very fun to figure out his design. :) ...But wait, there's more!

Clarence Whitman / Enzo D'Amico

I started to brainstorm a bit how the story would go with him- and whether his parents would be genderswapped or not, they'd fight over him. The D'Amicos would want him to carry the Mob's legacy while the Whitmans would want him to join the armed forces to fight for the country like they always did. Clarence tried both, saw the horrors and fled to study what he loved more than anything else: the art of literature and languages! He's completely broke by the time he returns to Springfield (living with the Whitmans was an absolute no) but the familia doesn't let him down and rent him a flat in exchange of which he'll work as a barman in the Legitimate Businessman's Social Club. He's not a big fan, but at least he has got somewhere to live... and he doesn't have to directly deal with his family's affairs.

If only the person with who he'd fall head over heels for wasn't a criminal to begin with... Wait a minute.

As I couldn't decide whether to go with a full genderswap!cast or just genderswap!Claryce when speaking of relationships, I drew both options.

Option 1 - Clarence and Bob

The relationship dynamic is reversed - while Clarence isn't too worried dating Bob (considering he saw worse), Bob would have trouble admitting he's in a relationship with another man due to his awful Republican standards. :') It's especially ironic when everyone is already quite aware of their relationship - but Clarence knows that Bob does genuinely care for him. He just needs time.

Fun fact: Bob would call Clarence "kitten" because his badly shaved mustache look like cat whiskers. Just figured you should know.

Option 2 - Clarence and Berthe

Now say hi to my version of genderswap!Bob: Roberta Terwilliger aka Sideshow Berthe! I thought it would be fun to design while I was brainstorming ideas for Clarence's relationship...

Same dynamic as Claryce and Bob, except Clarence hesitates because he thinks he's clearly out of her league. Thankfully, Berthe is morosexual and Clarence is only book smart./pos

my million dollar next Mass Effect Installment idea:

ME 3 alternative universe/divergence where you play as a recruited Morinth the Ardat Yakshi after the ill fated Shepard romance, who suddenly realizes “…oh. shit. i uh. probably should not have eaten that guy. considering he was supposed to. you know. save all our asses.”

(bonus points cause she absorbed the weird psychic shepard had with them too so now she’s literally like - “you are what you eat”ed a Chosen One trope)

so the game is you escaping and building your own motley crew of vagabonds banding together against BOTH the collectors and the crew of the normandy who are out for your blood

for character customization, let’s play into the lore theory that Asari can appear different to play on each individuals attraction, and you can change your asari appearance at will to resemble different species and have different tendril styles, but your initially selected marking pattern stays the same, and your sort of key identifier

Act 1: without shepard, the war is ongoing but the Collectors seem to be winning - most worlds are in post apacalyptic state, people scrabbling to survive, starts out on Omega as kind of the last refuge of motley crews. In trying to survive, you scrabble together a bit of a motley gang of your own, but the arrival of the normandy has you fleeing Omega with them to try and find somewhere else “safe” to hunker down for a bit.

actions in previous ME saves can affect omega gang strength and attitudes of certain NPCs like Aria T’Loak.

Act 2: the realization of well shit no where is fucking safe I guess. is this.. my fault? …damn. i guess… i guess it’s up to me to fix. So time to start building strength and amassing more companions/allies, re: traditional mass effect.

Key Narrative Decisions: try to patch shit up in the official channels, go for a pardon, talk to actual world leaders, risk the normandy’s vengeance and try to parlay to net bigger better firepower and easier battles? or get creative with limited resources and wilder plans to lean FULLY into the criminal element and lead the gangs of the underworld against the collectors, and establish yourselves as the new leaders of the galaxy?
