i saw a post floating around a bit ago that said something along the lines of "i think everyone needs larger living spaces with room to exist in" and it kind of really irked me as a western-centric view, but i only just put my finger on what i think the issue is.

it all comes back around to third spaces. someone who lives in a village of one room mud huts is not less happy or less fortunate than an American in a townhouse - they get their solace in outdoor/separate from home community spaces. my mother lived a very happy childhood with her whole family in an apartment the size of our current living room - and upon reflection, she credits it with the state-built parks between every complex that she played in and was called from to dinner through an open window.

and there is a draw towards alone-ness for a lot of us, in equating peace to silence and ownership of our own space, but i can't help but wonder if we would be so exhausted by the outside if the outside were more livable, and if we didn't have so much of a need to recover from existing in the society we built

What are your opinions on anti homelessness and hostile architecture

anti-homelessness largely stems from fear imo, in fact i think most problems in modern society stem from primal fear.

homelessness is a created issue, something the state perpetuates through policy that leads to (largely black) populations to suffer under scrutiny and end up on the streets without secure and safe housing. instead of the state actually working to change the structure of how our society works to solve the housing crisis it instead turns to humans primal fear. (the "other" that will cause us harm)

the state could easily solve the housing crisis by abolishing the commodification of housing and guaranteeing housing for everyone. of course that would take actual work and communities would have to agree on allowing low-income people and families into their neighborhoods which is borderline impossible so instead we opt out for what we consider the easier solution which is removal of homeless people

public space is now caught in a strange battle where cities install anti-homeless architecture (spikes on level surfaces, benches with center armrests to disallow people from laying down on them to sleep) and institute policies (increasing of police funding to police public space and remove 'unsightly' people to qualm fear) that remove these undesirables from our view. because in our monkey brains out of sight out of mind is a very real sentiment held by most people.

this now leads to an interesting problem, our fear of the other has created public spaces that are hostile to EVERYONE regardless of economic standing. one essay from a book published in 1994 notes how downtown LA has tall concrete barriers that section off the public space at the base of buildings, creating a buffer from one space to the other which restricts movement and makes it easier for security forces to monitor people, in essence creating a constant state of surveillance

this constant state of surveillance does not actually help resolve fear, it actually increases it. we are so obsessed with removing homeless people from our cities that it exacerbates our fear of the other. "if we need all of this hostile architecture to stop homeless people from existing in this space then they must be very dangerous." we are literally digging our own graves and giving in to our fear instead of resolving our fears at the source, and i fear what the US will look like in the next 20 years if we continue down this path
