TaskRaccoon Premium: Chapter 1
Josh was at a dead end. For years he had put his entire focus and energy on his education and studies, above his social life, his health, and his finances. He came top of his class in History and Classics and so in his head all that hard l work had paid off, but now that he had graduated... what was next? His classmates had swanned off into internships and graduate programmes, but Josh found himself in the summer after graduating with no job, no prospects and, most importantly, no money.
Josh's parents had supported him throughout his further education, but now that he was back home they decided to treat Josh like an adult. And that meant rent. Josh balked at the suggestion, but his parents were adamant and so Josh found himself on the job hunt.
This proved trickier than Josh anticipated. Turns out the local libraries and bookshops didn't care about his top degree; they wanted experience. And as Josh lowered his sights to restaurants, cafes, even the bowling alley, he found himself receiving the same feedback.
Needing to save making cash quick, a sympathetic interviewer told Josh to pick up the odd job on TaskRaccoon - an app where Josh could choose to help people with tasks like moving furniture, watering plants, doing shopping in exchange for a small fee. It wasn't perfect, especially as Josh didn't really have the build or inclination for manual jobs, and Josh often found himself doing jobs he never expected while at school. But over time Josh felt an unexpected satisfaction with earning a buck and paying his parents. So much so that Josh had bigger aspirations - moving out of his parents place.
That, of course, required money. And while Josh worked hard with the TaskRaccoon jobs he was given, he needed something more.
On a random Tuesday afternoon, a solution seemed to land out of nowhere on Josh's TaskRaccoon app: TaskRaccoon Premium. Out of nowhere, Josh's app pop-up with a link to a Premium version of the app. It was an additional service where workers such as Josh would get a boosted fee for the same types of tasks plus, according to the app, receive "all the skills and know-how to complete the task to perfection." Josh figured that last bit was maybe the app providing how-to guides on how to complete the more common tasks, which he took as a nice freebie.
To lure users in, there was even an offer - sign-up to TaskRaccoon Premium, perform a randomly assigned task, and receive double the boosted fee. Josh had done his fair share of the most common tasks on the app already (walk my dog, assemble my shelves, do my groceries) so figured it was well worth his while to take the gamble. And so Josh bit the bullet, sign up for a Premium account, and waited to be given his first random task.
Without any pause and without any fanfare, Josh's first random task appeared: "I need someone to clean my pool". Josh groaned; it wasn't the first time he had seen a pool cleaning request but it was one he always chose to ignore because he felt he didn't have any of the right equipment and would have no idea where to start. And while this new Premium version had offered access to "skills and know-how", there only thing on the app was an address. Josh couldn't even see an option to cancel.
Josh wavered, but as he saw the blue sky outside and remembered the promise of a doubled fee, he decided to go for it. He could rake some leaves out of a pool easily enough. The address was only a 15 minute drive away, so Josh grabbed the keys to his mum's sedan and got going.
It felt good to be outside and Josh enjoyed the sunny drive. So much so that he didn't notice his mum's humble car begin to change. The front section became blockier and more basic, her touchscreen sat nav becoming an older model. The seats and interior decor became faded, and Josh had to readjust his seating position as the car seemed to somehow lift off the ground. The steering wheel grew in size and, to match it, bizarrely, so did Josh's hands. Without warning, Josh's pale hands began to darken in complexion and as they grasped the now-rough wheel Josh didn't notice the veins that ran down with now lean and well-rounded hands.
Josh pulled up to a red light, momentarily confused about how he seemed to sit above the surrounding cars. He also felt cramped in the car and realised that his seat was pushed up way too far. He, a bit embarrassingly, was the same height as his mum so he never normally had to adjust the seat, but as he pushed the seat back he realised just how much he needed to stretch out his legs. As the light turned to green, he was oblivious to his jeans riding up and becoming a loose pair of swimming shorts, revealing his now lengthy and toned legs, feathered with dark hair.
Josh pulled up at the designated address shortly after, a sizeable house in a nice neighbourhood. As he got of the car, he was for a moment confused by his need to climb out of the car and then felt off balance when he landed on the tarmac. Before he could interrogate any further though, he looked in surprise at the pick-up truck boot filled with pool cleaning gear. A voice in the back of Josh's mind told him to panic - why the hell did he suddenly have all this gear - but remembering that he had a job to do Josh collected the gear and approached the house. Josh stopped en route to take his jumper off to enjoy the warm sun, not noticing the way his new well-fitted tank top which hung closely to his chest and showed off his slightly more toned arms or the darker shade of his skin...
Josh carried the gear with surprising ease to the front door, and was warmly welcomed by a middle-aged women who introduced herself as Beth. Beth showed Josh to her garden where a medium-sized pool sat, clearly long overdue a clean. Josh thanked Beth, pausing a little at the vague lilt coming out of his month. Was it just him, or just his voice sound deeper...
Josh got to work. The pool needed much more than just some leaves removed but with every task, Josh found himself instinctively knowing what to do. Which pump to use, when to apply chemicals, how to get the pH levels perfect, it all just flooded into Josh's mind. And he was surprised at how flexible he was at reaching all the right places - Josh didn't love manual jobs but he almost felt like his reach had gotten better. It was hot work though and Josh removed his baseball hat and towelled his brow and face, briefly feeling unfamiliar stubble on his face and thick short locks of hair on his scalp.
It wasn't long before Josh has completed his job, a sense of pride sweeping over him as he stared into the now pristine waters. That pride however quickly morphed into confusion as he gazed at the reflection in the shimmering water. Maybe it was distorted, but there was no way that that tall, dark reflection could be him. He was shirt, slender, pale, wasn't he?
He dropped his net and stared at his hands. His suddenly thick, dark hands. Josh began to breath sharply as he noticed just how high up he was, that he was in an outfit that he had never bought, and that his short, pale self had seemingly been replaced with a tanned, lean body.
As Josh was clutching at his newly stubbled face and grasping at the space where his small paunch should be, Beth came out with a pitcher of cool lemonade. Josh spun around in panic, and before Beth could say anything he muttered "lo siento" and ran back to his car.
Josh stopped sharply outside as he stared at the beaten up pick up truck outside Beth's drive, a truck that sat where he thought his mum's sedan should be. A truck that keys in his pocket unlocked. Breathing deeply, and trying his best not to panic, he clampered into the car and pulled down the mirror, staring at the unfamiliar dark eyes that stared back at him. Dark eyes amongst a handsome face, with a strong chin covered in thick but trimmed stubble and framed by dark, tightly curled locks. "What the fuck" Josh uttered, eyes widening at the accented deep voice that emerged.
Josh explored his tightly muscled body now covered in a light sweat when his phone pinged. He unlocked it - the phone recognised his face even if Josh didn't - and the TaskRaccoon app popped up, showing a task completed and $500 dollars deposited in his account.
But what kept Josh's eye though were the other task options appearing. There were more pool cleaning jobs, but also other tasks ranging from moving furniture, plumbing, and even covering people's work shifts. Josh noted that there was an option to cancel his "Premium" membership, but some of the fees weren't to be sniffed at. His breathing calmed down and Josh sat into his car seat, and pondered his options.

message in a bottle
_rb!chase x reader | prologue
An deceiving darkness has fallen outside. A hasty scan of his surroundings leaves something to be desired, unsteady balance heaved to the left as a one-sided fight ensues to remain upright.
Dissolving into a state of unconsciousness was not an ideal solution to his forthwith problem, however, it was the only feasible one that happened to cross his mind at the given moment. It arrived alongside a bitter reminder as well, it was the only one that proved a high success rate, even if abysmal to register that in full now.
His internal systems buzzed with alerts of lurking hazards and unnecessary risks, threatening his very life force if he did not take action effective immediately. At his grumble of disapproval, it all comes and goes in flurries of leaking Energon and severely damaged plating, his systems vying to discover the worst ailment so it can be treated first.
The only thing he begs for is in reference to his transformation cog, wanting it to concede sooner than later. It fights rather intensely against his wishes for the past handful of minutes, practically screams that it's not a good idea, he's making the wrong choice-
Finally, it moves one more time. The stasis lock eventually overrides all other commands, and he collapses into his alt-mode, tucked safely away in that barn he had dragged himself into.
"...no keys and it's been locked for, ah, since I've had it, practically."
One hand settles on your hip, the other reaching up to cover your mouth as you cough, the years of dust pulling from the rusty sedan and lingering heavily in the air.
Half listening, you force yourself to nod along to the man's lengthy pitch. It becomes apparent rather quickly that you'd never be able to keep up with the maintenance on such a vehicle, knowing somewhere in the back of your mind that the price seemed too good to be true.
In your survey of the car, one thing that caught your eye immediately was that there was no logo, no indicator of the make or model. The front bumper seemingly taking the brunt of the rust over the years, encasing it's once white and blue paint in a tarnished hue. Your eyebrow raises at the idea that it could be an older law enforcement vehicle, the seemingly odd color combination filtering through enough to warrant the question.
"So what do you think?" He asks, query effortlessly pulling you from your assessment.
"It's...great. It needs a lot of work, obviously." You do a double take, swearing that you just saw an interior light flicker. "But, um, I'm willing to take the time to do it."
It was proving increasingly difficult to pretend like you knew what you were talking about. Every word you've said sounded witless, a cringe following your response. It wasn't that you sought out to impress anyone, but in observing the sedan in such a state, you wanted to appear somewhat knowledgeable.
"Great," The salesman clasps his hands together behind his back, not caring an ounce about your poorly hidden weariness. "I've wanted this out of my lot for years. Nobody wanted to even look at it, 'cause of the whole key situation,"
Right. How the hell were you going begin maintenance on the car if you couldn't even get into it?
"I'll tow it for you, to wherever you want if you're nearby." He extends, but it's not out of sincerity. "It gives me the space to sell, and you don't have to break a window."
What a gentleman, crosses your mind before thanking him softly. With one last look over at the vehicle, you turn to follow him from the garage, ready to sit through a couple of hours of paperwork for a sedan you didn't have the slightest idea how to fix.
With your chin in your hands, you sit defeated on concrete steps, staring glumly out at the driveway.
The dealer had towed the car to your house, dumping it squarely on the pavement before departing down the dirt road without as much as another word. As if you could back out now, or beg them to take it back in a hasty decision.
You needed this car to work. It was cheap enough that it cut maybe too many corners and now staring at it, you knew you just dug yourself into a deeper hole.
Swearing under your breath, you move to kick a rock that happened to be within reach. It bounces down the last step, rolling lazily until it comes to a stop right in front of one of the front hubcaps.
Hauling yourself up, you walk down the remaining steps until you're now in front of the sedan, where it's then you see the same light flicker from the interior.
"So, obviously some wires are crossed." Talking aloud, you move to the driver-side door, tugging the handle lamely. "That gives me some hope that you have a few years left in you."
On the third pull, the door pops open, headlights clicking on with a muted hiss. You jump backward, startled, but find yourself thrilled by such a small victory.
The whole no key fiasco could be put on the back burner for now, though you would eventually need it to start the damn thing. For today, it was satisfactory that you could now get inside to assess any damages to the interior.
Curious, you slide into the driver's seat, taking in the cabin with dimming faith. The seats were a cracking black leather, the center dash outfitted with dated technology, and just as much dust if not more than the exterior.
"What did I do." Your forehead meets the steering wheel with a gentle thud, about ready to give up before it all began. Maybe you could sell it to a junkyard for spare parts, and use that cash to put towards a car with at the very least a key.
After a short spiral, you blink your eyes open, enthralled by the red emblem that sat on the airbag module. It was unlike anything you had ever seen before, pulling back slightly to run your fingers over it, collecting the dust as you push it away to get a better look.
A squeak erupts from your throat as the door slams shut, the small screen sitting in the dash blinking to life with scratchy feedback. As if at all at once the car came to life, the engine attempting to turn over with little success, overhead lights wavering wildly.
"What the hell?!" Your hand hastily runs along where the ignition would be, hoping to find a button or key jammed in there, but the ignition switch was expertly sealed off.
A trembling palm grabs at the door handle, tugging, then yanking on the hilt, but to no avail did it release. "Definitely not crossed wires-"
Your scream is cut short as a voice pushes through the speakers, a choppy and mostly invariable sentence heaving as if it hurt to vocalize them.
"Who...are...you?"
The string of words sounded as if they did not belong to the same person, though in your horrified and delusional state, you take it that the radio is busted, and not that the car is trying to communicate with you.
"So stupid, why did I-" The seatbelt clicks over your waist, moving on its own to your utmost horror.
Now, you irrationally, but finally conclude that the car is alive, and not in a fun, cool way, but it an 'oh my god, I'm going to die in here' way.
"Okay, okay! I hear you, I hear you loud and clear."
A garbled reply of nothing echoes, and whatever is trying to talk to you, no longer can.
"Um, you asked who I am, I'm y/n," Talking straight out of fear, hopped up on adrenaline, you gasp as the seatbelt winds tighter against your waist. "That didn't answer your question, alright. Uh, you were in a used car lot, I bought you for like three hundred bucks-”
The rearview mirror tilts down to look at you, giving you a disapproving glower even though you are looking at your own expression.
"I don't understand! I don't-" Tearful eyes move to the windshield, watching as his hood pops open with one fluid motion. "O-okay, I understand that. You want me to fix something in your engine?"
The screen blinks thrice, and your shoulders sag in relief, hoping that that means yes. However, your momentary cheerful mood is dampened by the thought that you likely have zero idea how to rectify the problem that it wants you to.
Terrified, you dare to pose an inquiry: "Do you have an instructions manual?"
The door swings open in response, and the seatbelt retracts, allowing you to exit of your own free will.
Realistically, you could just leave it in your driveway, call a towing company in the morning, and get it sent away forever. That would make the most sense, a reasonable and wise rejoinder to such a shocking discovery.
Yet, the intrigue of the situation got the better of you, thinking it wouldn't hurt to see what was under the hood. Carefully, you push out of the seat, feet hitting the concrete with a dull thud. Keeping somewhat of a distance from the car, you walk around to the front, gingerly leaning forward to stare down at such intricate technology, enough that it makes your head spin.
"Woah." It's breathless, fingers fumbling as you still can't seem to understand what they want you to understand. "I'm assuming you're trying to get me to fix your...?"
Headlights flicker at your knees, blinking with urgency as your gaze catches a square-shaped object, nearly emitting steam as more jumbled audio noises emit from the cabin.
"Voice box. Of course, you wanna talk so you can probably tell me you're going to kill me," Sighing, you take a step back, grease and oil coating your hands at just the minute touch of the machinery. "Is it okay if I go get a toolbox? It looks like it's pretty damaged, but I might be able to find a temporary solution."
Lights blinking three times once more, you take that wordless proposal as a yes, hesitantly turning before disappearing into the small garage. It takes some fumbling around in the dim light and dying sunlight until you find the tools.
After some struggle is displayed to lug the metal container back to the sedan, you eventually bring it to the ground with a thunk. "Listen, just so you're aware: I don't know what I'm doing at all. So please, don't kill me if I strike a wrong wire. I'm gonna mess around with it until…you can speak, I suppose."
An hour slinks by, then two, and halfway through the third you were still shoulders deep under the hood, covered in whatever had gathered within the gears.
Upon closer inspection, the voice box was heavily rusted but also improperly placed. It took maximum effort to find the right bolts to tighten, then the correct cables to rewire, even hitting it once or twice for good measure.
After some more time had passed, eventually the thing erupts with nonsense, frightening you fleetingly as you pull yourself from the front.
"It really did take me a hot minute." You wipe your hands with a rag, sparing a glance over your shoulder to the clock hanging inside the garage.
Even though you had been working on a means for it to speak, somehow, you were still not expecting it to talk back in the slightest.
"Yes." You scream, the oily cloth almost leaving your grasp. "You did mention repeatedly how you did not know what you were doing."
It was talking. It crosses your mind that amongst all the ridiculousness, a conversation arises.
"Sorry for the apprehension," You warble, feeling you're treading dangerous waters. "I didn't think that the car I just bought would be talking to me right now."
"It is a reasonable reaction, rest assured." You could tell that the voice box was not completely fixed because some of the words rejoined were hitched and not complete. "I owe you an apology as well. When I awoke from stasis in an unfamiliar place, I did not know if you were friend or foe."
"I still don't know what-who you are." Correcting yourself, not wanting to offend by any stretch. "Are you a friend?"
"Ah, most certainly, y/n." The way your name is spoken sends a chill straight down your spine, rooting you to your spot in the driveway. "My designation is Chase, that is what most call me."
"Chase." You say it with some disquiet as if such an insane situation could have such a simple name. "Well, Chase, since you are clearly some kind of machinery well beyond my scope of knowledge, I don't know entirely what to do with you."
Chase placidly laughs, and it sounds almost robotic. "Since you repaired my voice box, I could walk you through reparations, if you could be so kind. I am in bad shape, but since I awoke from stasis, I am stable for the time being."
"What is the end goal?" Moving some hair away from your forehead, you unknowingly leave a streak of dirt there. "I mean, what is the goal in general?"
"It would be best to work on my transformation cog first," You blink slowly at him as if he expected you to understand what that meant. "Then, we can work on all this rust and my internal systems."
"A transformation coil-" You start, but are promptly interrupted.
"Cog," He corrects.
"Cog." You nod once more as if you knew what you were talking about. "Implies that you transform into something?"
"This is my alternate mode," Chase explains simply. "I use my bipedal form most often. It is typically very uncomfortable to remain in alt-mode for extended periods of time."
"Right. Of course." Your hands settle on your hips, shoulders jumping to your ears as his hood slams back into place.
"Apologies." He mumbles, trying to demonstrate his earnestness. "I understand this is a lot to comprehend, believe me. Be that as it may, you saved me, y/n. I have been sitting in long recharge, rotting in that lot,"
Your nose wrinkles, a heavy feeling perching in your chest. Somewhere, you knew that this was insane, a huge ask and only looking for trouble, however, it was blatantly obvious that he did need help. As astronomical as it may be, you felt as if you were in no position to turn down his plea.
"I don't know if I'll be able to fully help you, Chase." You eventually say, swallowing your rising fears momentarily. "But I'll try. I needed a car, and I guess you're stuck with me just as much as I am stuck with you."
"My mobility functions are in working order." His tires spin once. "As repayment, I will take you wherever you so desire. Many thanks for taking such a task on, I can assure you I will make it as painless as possible."
"That's kind of you," A smile finds its way to your face, unable to stop. "One more question before we get to your transformation cog,"
"Anything. Ask and I will answer to the best of my ability." He replies easily, a lighter, happier hum to his tone.
"You mentioned bipedal form earlier. So who exactly are you?" You move to his door as it opens once more, his center screen lighting as he responds.
"I am an Autobot." The red emblem on the steering wheel alights. "I am Cybertronian, and I was here to learn the inner workings of Earth and protect its inhabitants from Decepticons."
You falter, his rearview mirror turning your way once more. "Kinda like a robot?"
He sighs, but it's half-hearted. "Sure, y/n. Kind of like a robot."

cw: stalking, obsessive behavior, voyeurism, hector generally being a freak Reed's life is charmed by the wonders of modern technology. Automated smart functions seem to learn their every move, schedule, and desire. It’s almost as if a guardian angel is looking out for them. A superstitious, but not unwelcome, thought.
The only complaint they have are the security cameras, and the countless clips of themself they don't remember saving...
Reed regards the rainbow welcome mat under their feet impassively. Welcome! It screams in a riot of cheerful, optimistic color. It could stay, they suppose. It was a little friendlier than they really felt, though. They wave the key fob over the apartment door and it unlocks with a commercialized jingle, a sound designed to be pleasant but which will surely become grating within a week. The apartment itself is exactly what they were imagining. Lovely, at first glance, but painfully artificial under any real scrutiny. The air smells like new carpet, a faint, lemony cleaning solution, and new paint. The universal scent of uninhabited.
A large, brandless tv sits in the middle of the living room, a pristine popcorn bowl for decoration only on the coffee table. A sanitized staging of the concept of living. The mattress is thin, the plates and bowls are all an atrocious lime green that pops in the cabinet the way an interior designer would love, but will make any real food look anemic. Generic, abstract wall art keeps the place from feeling like a prison, at least. A large floor-length mirrored closet door in the bedroom feels a little suggestive for a clean, corporate unit, but there it is, reflecting the empty room back at them.
The closet has a couple generic white button ups hanging on two of the five total provided hangers. The bathroom mirror is defaced with a small decal in the corner “Hello, gorgeous!”. Reed snorts, their reflection unimpressed. The couch is stiff and angled down, as if it can't wait for you to go.
And then there’s the smart features. Reed was given the spiel about Validivia’s top-of-the-line housing: premier security features and an expansive internet of things. Sensors, monitors, and bluetooth connections on anything and everything you could think of. Even the tub could be turned on and the water temperature maintained from halfway around the globe. There was a camera in every room except the bathrooms, including one built into the fridge itself that looked in on its contents. Sensors on every window and door notified them if they were open or not and motion sensors and timers in every room controlled the lights. Even just walking around and taking in the surroundings, their tv automatically switched on, showing a muted, high-saturation slide show of the property.
It certainly felt expensive, but there were spots that rubbed like a pair of designer shoes. Fine to show off, but could they bear to be here for long? They didn’t have much of a choice, and it beat having to search for an apartment and living on an air mattress until they could afford anything else. Reed has a bad habit of making impulsive cross country moves when things get boring, but after the third time they hopped into their mid-size SUV and took to the road with nothing but their bags, it lost its appeal. This last trip stopped feeling spontaneous and free spirited about halfway through. No, this most recent move felt freeing only on the late night drives. Once the sun had come back up and they were here, well, it turned out to still be the same life in a different apartment.
For practicality’s sake though, Reed is grateful, really. And so is their bank account. Which is also why they still have to clock in for the better part of their move-in day. Their suitcase is deposited in the bedroom and their laptop perched in its spot of honor on their desk. A small framed photo of a pug that looks suspiciously AI generated is promptly shoved into a drawer.
Reed is greeted by a flood of messages from the new guy. He had been hired at nearly the same time, but where Reed could easily figure out the honestly simple functions of a middle management position, their subordinate, Martin, always seems to be lost and in distress. Sometimes he sends streams of barely comprehensible IM’s. This time, as Reed sinks back into their flimsy office chair, it seems that he has ranted himself all the way to a solution all on his own. They huff a life and a smile,
Great job! It looks like you’ve really got a handle on it.
Office speak. It’s easy. Boring. Safe. About as interesting as the AI pug hidden in their desk. Reed is very good at it. It makes the person that drove overnight to get here with the windows down and the air whipping their hair around cringe, but hey, that’s life.
After a few hours of following up, circling back, and scheduling a power hour for next week, the clock rolled over to 4:30 pm and they pushed back from the desk with a groan. The chair was hell. Reed twists themselves left and right and stretches when they stand, their spine popping in protest. It would just have to be an adjustment because they can’t afford to upgrade it anytime soon.
It only takes a few weeks for Reed’s furnished life to work itself into a comfortable, numbing groove. They even begin to find things about the apartment that they enjoy. The AC is incredibly consistent, for one. They knew that there are thermostats out there now that could change on a clock or learn your schedule, but this one has picked up on their habits scarily fast. It also seems to automatically adjust to the odd scorcher of a day without them even having to lift a finger. Their window sensors also learned that they like to open them in the afternoon, just to keep the place from getting too stuffy, and if they don’t get to it in time the home app rings its little bell at them.
The list of niceties goes on. When they run low on coffee creamer, the screen on the fridge populates a virtual sticky note with the warning. Holidays would approach and the sticky notes’ little AI personality would recommend turkey, calling their mother, and taking time to rest. It feels strangely personal for corporate attempts at familiarity, but the reminders are helpful. Maintenance always seems to show up just on time to change air filters, check the fire extinguishers, and clean the windows. The automatic vacuum robot has stopped running first thing in the morning, when Reed is hosting their team meetings, after just one cancelled run. After that, it started to wake itself up at noon, when they take their lunch break, instead. For someone who works at home, these little tasks being automated and lifted from their mental load is, as dramatic as it sounds, freeing. It’s almost as if a guardian angel is looking out for them. A superstitious, but not unwelcome, thought.
The only complaint they have are the security cameras. Every now and then they’d send phantom notifications. Their app will light up, but when they open it, it’s gone. The streams are always low quality to the point of pixelation, if they don’t just freeze and jump completely. Tapping into the settings reveals the likely culprit. The cloud storage seems to have countless clips. None more than 15 minutes or so, and none that are too embarrassing, thank goodness. Just scrolling through the thumbnails reveals that they go back to when Reed first moved in and were likely an auto clipping feature that bugged. A couple catches their eye, and after patiently sitting through the lag, they’re able to watch a few.
3 minutes long, in the evening: Reed is dusting the apartment with music blasting over the sound system. They’re singing along where they know the words, making up the lyrics where they didn’t, and sounding awful the entire time.
5 minutes, morning. Reed doesn’t see anything at all. When they turn their volume up, they realize they must be in the bathroom and getting ready for the day. A place none of the cameras can see. They hear their own voice echoing down the hall. “No, mom - I know. I know. I don’t know what I’m waiting on either. If you’re so worried about it, why don’t you just pick someone out for me, hm? I’m sure they’ll be perfect. No, really. Go ahead.”
They cringe at this memory, snapping at their mom for asking why they were still single. It wasn’t fair to ask, but it wasn’t fair for them to talk to her like this, either. They move, unable to bear the rest of that conversation, but wonder they wonder why this one was clipped. The rest look like they may have been triggered by motion, but this one only features a perfectly still room. Perhaps the windows were being blown around?
15 minutes, also in the evening, just the day after: They’re making pancakes for dinner, leaning close to the edge of the pan to pick the edge of the pancake up just enough to check if it was done on the underside before flipping it. They’re mumbling to themselves.
“Just one date, ya know? You could do it. It’s been ages, but you’re not old tech. Dating is dating. They didn’t come up with new rules while you’ve been out, and if they did, you’ll just have to find somebody that’s outdated, too…”
Also Embarrassing, but could be worse. Odd that it happens to be the perfect continuation from the last clip, too.
The rest seem to be other innocuous moments in their life. Crying during a movie. Reading a book with the windows open, leaning their head back when the clouds parted and the sun landed on them. That night they started and abandoned learning origami. They’re… sweet. Oddly. Like the most mundane and boring scrapbook. Each video seems so intentional. The more they look at the ends and beginnings of each they feel a flicker of something uncomfortable, a sense of being perceived pricks at them. They glance up to their living room camera, feeling another chill before dismissing the feeling.
They chastise themselves for being paranoid and tell themselves to be thankful for this. It would be a shame to delete them all. They compromise on finding a way to offload them onto another hard drive or something. Not like they need to watch the cameras when they are home all the time, anyway.
Another surprise of their new life: in all of its supercorp moral complexity, a gift from Valdivia. They had never worked for a company that even pretended to be concerned about their employees before. After a visit to the office, Reed complains off-handedly about how awful their desk chair is at home, adding, “and the damn cameras. They’re basically useless.” Their team sympathizes with the chair, saying many of the ones in the office itself are similar. While they discuss the adrenaline pumping hoys of corporate furniture, their manager, Celia, passes them a sticky note with a phone number that just says “Security”.
“It’s been on my desk since I started oh, I don’t know, five years ago or so?” she explains with a shrug. “I don’t even know if that number goes anywhere anymore, but it’s worth checking. Maybe they can help you out with your cameras. I’ve never had an issue with mine, but you know, those have been in that building for god knows how long. Oh, and about that chair. You know how Validivia is, sometimes things just... show up. Good luck with it.” She gives a warm, if quick, smile and wishes the team a good evening.
True enough, within the next couple of weeks Reed’s doorbell chimes and their phone lights up with the stream from the front door’s camera. The view was completely obscured by a box with a scuffed black and white photo of a high backed office chair printed on the exterior. It was heavy, and takes some time to put together, but is worth every stripped screw and pinched finger. The high back and leather held them as if apologizing for how that other, awful, low down mesh chair had treated them. Maintenance even comes by the very next morning to pick up the old one.
And things are, more or less, fine. A year went by. Two. The rainbow welcome mat out front had faded to a grungy sort of pastel with time and dust. They stop texting the friends from the last town they had lived in. They barely start texting new ones in this town. Their ex finally stops calling them, and their mom has given up on her matchmaking efforts. They consider getting a cat, but feel that staying cramped in this apartment all day for the rest of its life would be cruel. No, better they get adopted by a family with a yard, or a fancy catio. Reed worries for nothing, but they don’t get excited for anything, either. Work never has any complications outside of the minorly irritating, and even those always seem to simply fix themselves without much added effort.
And that’s exactly what grates them. This quiet, lonely little routine they felt married to. It was always hard to make friends in a new town, but Reed struggles to even want to try. A couple outings with coworkers, sure. They’re always so controlled and stiff. Tongue in cheek jokes about getting soooo out of control off of the standard 1.5 drinks. Hobby groups could be a solution, but that’s not really who they are, is it? Someone who plays boardgames willingly or wakes up at 6:00 am on the weekday to fit int he perfect hike. No, none of that tempts them at all.
That itch is coming back. It tells them to send out resumes, to throw caution to the wind, to pick up and just… leave. They could take to the road again and… then what? Fourth time’s the charm? They make good money here, their apartment is affordable for what it is and has amazing features, and no matter where they go, there they would be. Bored and alone. Again. Weekends come and go and they realize they never once left their apartment. They only have themselves to blame when they are eating dinner alone, again.
It doesn’t seem right to muss the table settings just for themselves. They stand at the kitchen counter, only the quiet clink of their fork on the plate and the hum of the AC making noise. They scroll through their phone, mindlessly clearing out old photos. For the past two years they had been painfully practical. Log in, photos of their license and insurance cards. Their license plate. A screenshot of a plate set that wasn’t lime green that they considered buying, and then forgot to. They came by one of a sticky note. “Security.” And a phone number. Oh yeah. Two years ago? No telling how bad that cloud storage is now. Oh well. No better time than the present. They bite their fork between their teeth to free their other hand and plug the number into their phone and type.
Hey, you got a minute?
They switch apps, finish their dinner, and while drying the same plate they use everyday hear their phone vibrate.
How did you get this number?
From my sup, Celia. She said I should reach out about issues with my security cameras?
Do you have any idea what you're doing?
The words feel sharp and accusatory. Reed’s stomach tightened, but they know how to be professional.
My apologies! Is this the emergency line? If you give me your main office number and hours I’ll follow up with them tomorrow.
The typing bubble appears, disappears, then appears again. It moves for a long, long time. Reed puts their phone down, annoyed and ready to forget the whole thing. Just as they turn to walk away, it vibrates again.
Wait.
Okay, fine. Reed stops, sends another brief message, and waits.
Standing by.
Another long pause.
You can message this number. But not tonight. Not like this. We will talk tomorrow, I’ll be ready then.
Reed reads the last text, then reads it again. Not like this? Must be an after hours thing. Would the same person still be working tomorrow morning? That’s a hell of a shift. Then again, maybe it was just some weirdo and the number had been changed long ago.
By the time Reed makes it to bed, they notice the lights in the bathroom and kitchen are still on. Weird, they normally turn themselves off by now. Right as they were planning to ask about their cameras, too. Reed gets back up and walks barefoot across the apartment to shut them off themselves, trying to not feel terribly spoiled by the inconvenience.
When they finally laid down again, they reread the strange message one last time, the words glowing pallid and blue in the dark. A feeling they didn’t want to name, not fear really, but a deep and unsettling curiosity settles over them. Before they can follow this, the first interesting thing to happen in their life in two years, a chill overtakes them as the temperature begins to drop. They set their phone on its wireless charger and pull their blankets higher up to their chin, putting it out of their mind for the evening.

Hi, I'm the human who got trapped inside a TARDIS.
Thank you for the help, I managed to open the interior doors a few days ago and went looking for the owner. No luck, but I found a swimming pool, a huge library, kitchens, bathrooms, bedrooms, science labs, entertainment rooms and what seems to be a huge park?
I don't know how on Earth something like this can even exist, but I guess there's all the time in the world to learn while waiting for rescue. I'm worried about the pilot though; isn't there a way to locate them, given how advanced this craft is?
Hi there, trapped human! Let's address your concerns about the pilot.
How to locate a TARDIS pilot
Do not attempt to operate the TARDIS flight controls without being absolutely sure it is safe. On earlier models, use of the console without a Symbiotic Nucleus may result in injury or a very slow and painful death.
Note: Most of the systems are in Gallifreyan. TARDISes do not tend to translate Gallifreyan, so you may not be able to read them.
Here are some methods you can try:
📡 Stattenheim Remote Teleport Control: Look for a small black disc stored in a transparent dome on the console. If properly calibrated, pressing this button may immediately transport you to the pilot. If it's not there, the pilot has taken it, or the TARDIS doesn't have the Mark X refit.
⏪ Fast Return Switch: This will return the TARDIS to an approximate time and location near where it last landed. It's clearly labelled on the console. Turn it clockwise to operate. [Use with caution]
📍 Locate the Doctor: Some models may have this feature. It is activated by pressing a button on the console labelled 'LTD' (your TARDIS may have another personalised variation). The Visual Display Unit will show the pilot's relative position on a map.
🧬 Passenger Adoption Scanning Terminal (PAST): This system registers and protects passengers. Due to how it works, if you’re registered, the pilot is likely still on board.
👥 Internal Monitor: A Mark II TARDIS can detect the number of sapient life forms onboard and display it on the Internal Monitor.
💻 The Scanner: The Scanner can locate the pilot's biodata within a two-mile radius outside the TARDIS. Some pilots have a preprogrammed switch by the scanner that will instantly display their pilot's location, but this is a modified feature.
🎤 Voice Interaction: Try speaking to the TARDIS. Some models respond to vocal commands for minor systems. If the TARDIS doesn’t respond, your voice print registration is required.
🔍 Artron Telepathic Radiation: If you find another Time Lord, they can scan for the pilot's ‘thumbprints’ left by their symbiotic nuclei to identify them.
🛠️ Cloister Room: This room contains telepathic circuits to communicate with the pilot, possibly providing an audiovisual link. It's accessible via a shortcut in the Secondary Control Room. Be cautious, as this room may have minor effects on your nervous system.
🚨 Extreme Emergency Lever: Crew members can use this lever to lock onto a pilot drifting in space and materialise around them.
🗝️ TARDIS Key: Use a key to locate anyone processed by the PAST (such as other crew members). Mix their blood with saline solution, coat the key, and suspend it in clear oil. The oxidised blood particles will 'point' in their direction.
🧠 Memory Store: Stores memories of TARDIS occupants, including audio-visual recordings of the Control Room. Useful to identify the pilot and the last time they were there.
💉 Medical Bay: The Automatic Diagnostic Terminal usually uses the pilot's avatar to communicate. You may be able to ask the avatar their identity, although responses may be limited.
If you need to take emergency action:
There is an 🚪Emergency Door located in the Power Stacks Room, leading outside. The 🚨 Fail-Safe Switch locks the TARDIS onto the nearest habitable environment, creating emergency doors. The 🆘 Emergency Emergency System (so emergent they named it twice) creates a wormhole to the nearest habitable planet. This is one way only, so there is no return to the TARDIS afterwards.
💀 Pilot Death & TARDIS Adoption
Usually, emergency systems will try to lock onto the pilot. If this is not happening, the pilot may have died without regeneration. TARDISes will normally go into a period of mourning following the death of their pilot, possibly involving a loss of power or shut down of many systems.
If you're finding systems are not shut down but have increasing suspicions the pilot may have died, this could be because:
The TARDIS has already gone through its period of mourning;
It has reactivated at your presence, hoping to establish a link with you;
It didn't really like its pilot very much.
It's not unheard of for humans to forge a bond with the TARDIS, especially if it's been left alone for some time. The TARDIS might be adopting you as its new caretaker, which would explain the access you've been granted. Some clues:
🎁 TARDISes sometimes leave gifts to welcome new arrivals. Look around for anything unusual or out of place.
💭 If you feel any strong intuitive pushes or thoughts, it might be the TARDIS trying to communicate with you.
🔑 If you're finding you have access to a lot of the TARDIS (including intricate systems), the TARDIS definitely likes you.
🏫 So ...
To locate the pilot or other crew members, try any of the procedures outlined above. Be sure to familiarise yourself with the main areas and secure access to food, water, and other necessities. The TARDIS can help—look for glowing arrows or symbols on the walls. These can lead you to important areas. Remember, the TARDIS is a complex and sentient machine. If it has adopted you, it will do its best to keep you safe, and it has a plethora of effective automated defences to achieve this.

(And a hornet pelting them all with packets of crisps ~) With @selinswonderland and @akhilaasthana Thanks to Dion for the header!
The warehouse was a haven, for now. Akhila had ducked inside seeking sanctuary and something sugary. It didn’t take a genius to know she was burning through calories at a higher rate. She scoured the shelves for a tin of peaches. It would do. Akhila turned on her heel, the can already torn open, syrup sloshed up and over onto her hand. Bugger. The hornets were everywhere. She scrunched her nose and drank as much of the sugar-syrup as she could stomach. Akhila, fuck, she needed something––she grappled to trade her tin for a tool and got a wrench. Adequate. It had a decent weight to it.
“I’ve had it up to bloody here with this.” Akhila seethed, but the hornet lifted and turned, it’s staticky not-face had latched onto someone else. Not the resolution she had in mind. Akhila willed for speed or power, but as she jogged after it but there was no surge of energy. “Behind you!” She hollered.
***
Selin had no idea where to go or what to do. After a few encounters with these robot hornets, it seemed like the best option to duck into the medicenter, grab some type of supplies, something in case of injury. But while almost there she noticed a few people who were making their way out, arms loaded with stuff. No way they needed that much medical supplies! She tried to call out to them but they were moving fast, so the easiest solution was to follow. At least that way she could see what they were up to or be an extra pair of hands if there was really a big group of people in need of assistance.
Following them to the warehouse, it turned out to be a bad idea considering the amount of hornets that were buzzing around the interior. The commotion bounced off the walls and Selin followed the shouting voices to find Akhlia and another, (one of the ones she saw running from the medicenter) standing off with one of the hornets causing her to stop dead in her tracks. "Whoa, okay. Let's all just be calm. Maybe if we leave it alone it'll...go away." She said, slow and incredibly hopeful.
***
Tej spotted Ellen first. From his perch in the upper loft of the warehouse, he surreptitiously watched as she stashed boxes behind a broken furnace. Not long after, a few more followed with boxes. Doors were carelessly left open, and the horrible drones of the hornets amplified off the brick and concrete of the warehouse.
He grabbed up a nearby can of spray paint (Rust-oleum, color "Key Lime") and popped the top off. A lighter was also picked up. Tej took the stairs down quick.
‘Oh my god, get it–get it away from me!’ Ellen wailed in a piercing high pitch. Body turned to the side, hands balled up and held tight to a smaller box in her arms. Akhila was there, as was Selin. And the hornet, as it hovered behind Ellen one second and zipped around in front of Ellen the next.
(Incredibly engineered, Tej thought. Painstakingly created. He wanted to take the hornet apart piece by piece to see just how beautiful it was).
Tej, agitated: “Yeah. Because being calm is really working out for Ellen. She let the damn thing in here.”
***
Really, what exactly did she think she was doing? Akhila’s gaze cast towards the doors that had been left flung open. She flinched as Ellen wailed, Selin, she was fairly certain the young woman’s name was Selin, seemed hopeful they could play ignorant. Akhila pursed her lips to answer but another voice joined the thick of it. She cast a sideways glance and it was him, backpack man.
Excellent.
Akhila tightened her grip on the wrench. “We need to lure it out of here.” This hadn’t been part of the relaxation-bargain.
“Right, well shit.” Akhila huffed, because Ellen had spied a break in the hornet’s hovering and made a break for it. The machine-come-beast hesitated, then followed with intent after her deep into the belly of the warehouse. “That wasn’t––” Akhila stared in horror as another came with a box clutched to their chest and a hornet on their tail. She reached for Selin and pulled them both down to avoid collision.
“Just in case.” Akhila informed her as she handed Selin the wrench. It was better than nothing. Without waiting Akhila lurched down the warehouse, one of the hornets had wedged itself up on a top shelf and was incidentally launching packets of crisps down at them to free itself. One less to worry about. “You haven’t got the ability to laser beam it with your eyes have you?” She asked the young man. Names could come later when there wasn’t giant-fucking-wasps to worry about.
***
Ellen's reaction to the hornet was anything but calm. Not that Selin could blame her for it, but after multiple run ins with these things, screaming and running seemed like the easiest way for them to give chase. Which is exactly what happened as Ellen tried to get away and only intrigued the robotic creature more. "Does that look like calm to you, Tej?" Selin pointed out at his sarcasm at her suggestion. None of them were targets yet after all.
Looking at the wrench Akhila gave her, Selin appreciated it but had a sneaking suspicion that it wouldn't be enough to take this thing out. If anything a wrench to that television head would most likely cause aggression to be turned on them.
"I think if we want to take this thing out. We need to make every hit count." She told both of them, holding up the wrench. "This is a good distraction if we want to be a new target, but we'll need something bigger to incapacitate it. Try to break off limbs somehow."
***
He blinked once at Selin and replied dry as a bone: "Oh. What, you gonna offer to meditate with her? Do some deep breathing. Don't let me interrupt." His chin tipped up. "At this point Ellen's yelling probably called every one of those damn things over here."
As Akhila outfitted Selin with a weapon, Tej ran over to close the mentioned doors. They at least might stand a chance against a few trapped inside, versus letting the rest of them in.
When he returned to Selin and Akhila, they were being pelted with snacks by one of the trapped insect robots. Could he shoot laser beams from his eyes? "I only wish. You?"
Selin and Akhila had both offered different but equally decent options against the damn hornets. He looked around them and then down the long aisle, beyond the angry wedged in thing caught in shelving.
"Look. There are some empty shelves at the end of this row. As tall as these." He gestured to the ones they stood in front of. "We lure the rest of the hornets down to the end of this aisle. The shelving isn't exactly light weight, but since they're empty I figure I can push them over. If we can trap them under the shelves, then we could actually break some limbs." A second to recognize Selin's suggestion. "Damn, killer over here. I never knew."
And, continued. "Pretty sure I can fry some parts and pieces too." He held up the can of spray paint and lighter.
"We need someone to lure them down there." A beat. "Where the fuck did Ellen go? Stashing more of those boxes?"
***
Akhila ducked her head to avoid the purple-foil wrapped snack. She’d pursed her lips, considering Selin’s entirely pragmatic point that the wrench wasn’t going to do that much damage. Perhaps not to these robot-hornets, but technology was fragile. She’d only needed to drop her new iPad the once to learn that lesson. “I don’t know where she’s gone…” She could hear her, the cacophony of chaos, shouts and screams. That didn’t avail them of Ellen’s current location within the warehouse.
Good.” She mused as he held up the balm of teenage boredom.
“No laser beams…” Akhila could however, if she could kick some of that sugary energy into gear, utilise her unnatural speed. “Sorry Selin, I’ll need that wrench back.” Akhila shot off, the plan formulating piece by piece. “I think I can lure the hornets down this end.” She flexed her hand, there it was, the sluggish feeling of pulling through honey. Akhila proffered them both a wan smile. “I’ll be bait, whilst I wouldn’t normally condone this, you two get ready break limbs.” No time to be delving into the absurdity of the situation.
There wasn’t a chance in hell she was sending either of them into the hornet-nest.
“First…we really should find Ellen.” The last any of them needed was an extraneous variable. “Heaven only knows why she’s moving boxes at a time like this.”
***
"Man, now really isn't the time for your sass." Selin replied back with a sigh. "When I aggravated one by throwing rocks at it, I got stung. So to me it makes sense that if you leave it alone, it'll do the same." But the longer they left them alone, the more they would destroy. Who was to say whether they would get any replacements of items and food targeted by the hornets or if this was all some master plan to rid them of resources they got accustom to these past few weeks.
Easily, she handed the wrench back over to Akhila when she requested it. There probably wouldn't be a whole lot of damage done with it in her hands. Though the idea of anyone as bait didn't sit right with her, as cool as it was for Akhila to offer up herself with ease, Selin couldn't possibly just say yeah, go for it! especially considering what they were up against and the likeliness of injury. "Are you sure? I'll warn you, those stinger claw things they've got? Not fun. Just, be careful." An obvious statement, but Selin felt she needed to offer it up nonetheless.
She turned to Tej at his comment about her being a killer. "I'm very complex. Surprisingly, I don't like giant mechanical bugs terrorizing me and other people."
As for Ellen, Selin kept quiet about what she was doing that caused her to head this way in the first place. Now probably wasn't the time to admit she had a hunch theft was taking place. The woman's shrieks and cries through the warehouse echoed, and as Selin turned her head to the side, she watched Ellen running past their aisle still frantically shouting for help as the hornet curiously followed after her. "Found her. Think you can help me catch her?" She asked Tej, gesturing for him to come along. "Maybe we can try that meditation idea of yours."
***
Selin’s exasperation inexplicably brought a faint smile to Tej’s lips. Admitting she’d been stung wiped it all away. “I was stung too.” The burn of skin ripped open by a claw still vivid enough to bring a protective hand to his side. He wondered if Selin also saw anything. Or was it his own delirium in the moment, in the surreal grip of a horrific man-made insect? Something to bring up once they were all in a safer position.
I’ll be bait. “The fuck?” This was the person who dove into rough seas to save the thing most precious to him, without even knowing what the hell it was. “You don’t have to do that.” A similar statement to Selin’s one that didn’t need to be said. The look of determination in Akhila’s eyes told them the decision, however baffling, had already been made.
A brow rose to Selin’s other remark, “Never had a doubt about it.” Complex, yes, and she deserved to have the last word too.
"Think I know what she's up to--" but before Tej could rat out Ellen, she darted nearby. "Ah. What if Ellen prefers yoga?" He took off down the aisle and gained easily. Enough to cut around the corner as Ellen approached and slip a strategically placed foot out for her to trip over. Splat.
He leaned back to see Selin. "Tell Akhila we got her. And another hornet is down here too." He bent down to help Ellen up. "The hell do we do with this one though?"
***
Akhila had always really loathed sitting in the backseat with the world blurring by, and no control over speed, or jerky direction. One of the reasons she’d gotten herself a two-seater convertible. The motion was startlingly akin to the speed she could garner from what felt like an otherwise mundane jog. Though sickeningly sweet canned fruit had done its job, the warehouse was streaks of ruddy colour, and nary a hornet in sight. Bollocks. Akhila looped back up and around to go down a second row incase she’d missed it. Easily done when the world was nothing but a gauzy super-speed blur.
Brakes? Yeah still hadn’t quite figured that one out yet, more testing needed. Akhila skidded, knees bent to absorb the impact, and no sooner had the dust settled she doubled over the expunge the fruit. Useful, yes, an awful fairground ride experience, also yes. Akhila wiped her mouth, and moved to straighten up but behind a disconnected furnace was a stack. Boxes pile on top of each other wasn’t out of the ordinary, it was the contents. Akhila pulled one towards her, the stash of gloves that had gone missing last night, below that a defibrillator that appeared too modern comparatively.
Akhila ground her back teeth. She followed the sound of chittering voices. Selin, Tej and in the middle of them both Ellen. “Anyone have any idea who took this?” She barked, holding up the neatly portable defibrillator someone had evidently pried from The Odyssey. Ellen went ghostly mute. “Crying out loud!” Akhila half-wished she’d kept the wrench. She pushed her tongue up against her teeth, heaven almighty save her now if these were the blithering idiots she was stuck with. Tej and Selin, excluded. “You cannot be serious, have you any idea the trouble you've caused? That you could cause?”
***
Knowing the awful feeling of being stung and what she had witnessed, Selin had this look of fear and sympathy when Tej said he was also stung. She didn't wish that experience on anyone but it seems she wasn't the only unlucky one.
Neither of them seemed all that pleased with Akhila offering herself up as bait, but something had to be done, right? Selin didn't know much about Akhila's ability and what she was capable of. It wasn't laser eyes, but she still felt confident enough to lure the hornets somewhere that Tej and Selin could gang up on them. Maybe even Ellen too if she quit running around like a maniac. Luckily, she was pretty easy to knock down when they managed to catch up to her, a simple trip to send her toppling face first to the ground.
"Hey, you're gonna need to calm down and quit causing a commotion in here, ok? These things don't like being provoked and running and screaming isn't helpful, do you understand?" She asked Ellen, who feverishly nodded her understanding. Selin had the urge to scold her like a child for not thinking and acting so recklessly. But right now, Ellen was quiet and Selin ranting would get the same outcome as Ellen's screaming.
When Akhila showed up, holding up a defibrillator and asked about it in a harsh and accusatory tone, Selin's gaze gravitated over to Ellen, now avoiding eye contact. She had seen the other woman lugging the boxes from the medcenter over in this direction but she had no clue what was inside. But as much as she knew that some type of punishment was deserved, she was still concerned about the hornets. "Akhila...I think maybe we should focus on the bigger problem before anything else. What happened? You didn't already take care of the rest of the hornets did you?" The thought of Akhila dealing with those things all on her own, while impressive, sounded incredibly dangerous.
***
An odd sound was heard within the warehouse. After Akhila took off, a rush of movement traveled over to Tej and Selin. He just couldn't see Akhila. But most of his attention temporarily fell (ha) to Ellen-- who finally seemed to take Selin's advice.
When Akhila reappeared, she had something with her. Tej's brows drew tight. "The hell did that come from..." The answer sat on the ground between them all.
'I'm not the only one. Others took things too,' Ellen admitted with a lot of bluster despite the color that flooded her cheeks at being caught. 'You can't just blame me!'
Tej pinched the bridge of his nose with a loud exhale. But Selin was right. Take care of the immediate danger before sorting out the supply thieves. So, to Akhila. "What did you find?"
***
“No.” Her gaze cut across to Selin, and then flicked from Tej to Ellen. Latter of whom was sprouting a great deal of nonsense. Absolving herself of guilt because others had dared to be fools too. A pitifully weak excuse. “I found their stash, no hornets.” Akhila held her jaw tight and spoke through tight lips.
There was every possibility she may have missed a hornet, owing to her bout of motion sickness. However, Akhila remained an otherwise infallible wall. “Shut up woman.” She barked at Ellen, who chewed over her silence with ruddy cheeks.
There was no evidence of the hornets, no buzz or hum. Conceivably even the one that had wedged itself into a shelving unit had flushed itself out. “I would suggest we get out of here.” Akhila measured Ellen up, the woman owed her, owed them all for her pilfering. The adrenaline-infused stupidity on her behalf had waned, leaving Akhila bone-weary. After some hesitation. “You were right.” She poised to Selin.
“Any other suggestions?”
***
Amidst Ellen's protesting about the things that were taken, trying to absolve herself from blame, Selin's main concern was the hornets. Ellen was certainly in the wrong here but she didn't deserve to get attacked or killed by one of these robots. At least that's what Selin thought, she wasn't sure what the other two believed. But when Akhila told them that there were no more hornets around, she didn't find anything but this stash of medical equipment, that brought her a sense of relief. It also felt kind of good to hear from Akhila of all people that her belief on how these things operated was correct. It was quite the honor, even if it was just a simple remark, it felt like praise.
"Getting out of here is a good idea. Unless you've got more medical equipment stashed away here somewhere that you'd like to tell us about?" She asked Ellen, a bit more stern, raising her eyebrow. Selin probably wasn't much of a threat, but with Tej and Akhila there as well, she'd know not to cause trouble right now. "There's no other equipment, just some bandages and pain meds..." Ellen trailed off and Selin couldn't tell if it due to embarrassment or simply withholding information of how much was taken.
"Well if it's not much I think it won't be that hard to collect it all and bring it back where it belongs. Seeing as we all saved you after all. I think we deserve a little cooperation, what do you all think?"
***
Akhila and Selin were quite the appealing team as they interrogated Ellen. All severe tones and beautifully grave faces. Hot. Ellen spilled the rest of the stolen stash. “Ah, get high. Give your heart a shock.” Tej tapped his chest with a fist twice. “Had a night in Hell’s Kitchen like that once.” Several, many, lucky to be alive. “What’s the bandages for? In case you survive the overdose and heart arrhythmia but wake up with a nasty papercut?” Tej’s contribution: mockery and mild harassment.
Ellen wiped her nose on the sleeve of her teal shirt. Then she bolted up, shoved herself through the fine wall Selin and Akhila created, and took off running.
He paused to see Ellen haul ass down the warehouse aisle. “I’m not chasing her again,” Tej said as flat as his expression. “But I’ll help carry the boxes those dipshits stole back to the Medicentre.”

It was Selin who put herself forth to interrogate Ellen, and through a squeaked out confession Ellen, Akhila's glower deepened. Despite frustration curdling to ire Akhila found herself warming to Selin. Akhila's lips pursed, with a huff of haughty air through her nose as Tej chimed in. Only for Ellen to flee from Tej's barbed call-outs with a hard shove.
She brushed out her sand dune scrubs, and took the time to straighten herself out. "Thank you." Akhila flipped the defibrillator case up, underneath it was stamped with '#4 TOP DECK OF THE ODYSSEY.' Perhaps it would be worth revisiting the cruise ship. "Both of you."
"She isn't worth our time." Pill poppers never were. "We should be able to move them all in one go if we can locate that dolly. Let's hope the hornets have found a honeypot to distract themselves with."

Let the GTA professional painting service turn your home transformation into an amazing, long-lasting masterpiece.
We discuss in this blog the top ranked painting solutions that can change your house and explain why hiring professionals in GTA is the way to go for an absolutely perfect finish.
1. Best Interior Painting Solutions: Set the Right Mood
Interior house colors could create an atmosphere in the rooms, which can have an effect on what their owners think about them. Color combinations can either make rooms feel cozy and spacious or just warm and welcoming. Among the best interior painting solutions are:
Neutral Colors for a Long Lasting Aesthetic: White, beige, and grey are so light and versatile in shade that they can work with almost any decor. They especially work well in small rooms, as they open up a space and make it seem larger.
Strong Accent Walls: For a more dramatic appearance, bold-colored accent walls in deep blue or rich green can add personality without overwhelming the space. Or try a bright pop of yellow.
Texture and Finishes: To achieve a more glamorous look, textured paint finishes like matte, satin, or eggshell will add depth and level the space, resulting in a modern, sophisticated ambiance.
2. Exterior Painting Solutions: Making a Big Impression on Your Front Door
Well, after all, it is the outdoor look that people notice right first, hence making it look fresh and maintained will be the key feature to be enhanced in appeal. In the GTA, where the weather can batter home exteriors, the choice of exterior paint solutions is crucial so your house looks great and stands up well to the elements.
Weather-Resistant Paint: High-quality, weather-resistant paint. This paint will last long without easy chipping, cracking, or peeling off in the snow and rain and ultraviolet rays, hence very durable.
Be in Vogue Colour Trends: Neutral shades of charcoal, slate gray, and soft beige are highlighting modern and clean designs for the exterior. For emphasis on a power punch of color, try adding a bold red, navy blue, or even black door to create a great contemporary finish.
Eco-Friendly Paint: As the GTA region becomes more conscious of the environment, homeowners are getting more and more selective about the earth-friendly ways that go easy on the inhabitants as well. For them, eco-friendly, low-VOC paints are the ideal choice, for they are safer to the environment yet carry magnificent durability for any exteriors.
3. Feature Walls: Adding Dimension and Character
A feature wall is an eye-catching feature of any room without overcrowding the space. Feature walls feature greatly as trends in living rooms, dining rooms, and bed rooms. Feature walls can add dimensions to the aesthetic appeal of your home through bold coloration or a textural finish.
Wood or Brick Impressions: The popularity of faux wood and brick-effect paints is very high, as they provide a ruggedly textured look without using actual material. Walls created using this type of paint can give your home an industrial or vintage appearance.
Geometric Patterns: A popular choice used for creating geometric patterns on walls with contrasting colors. This is such a modern, artistic feel for a home office or creative space.
4. Painting the Ceiling - The Fifth Wall
One often forgets the ceiling-it has been referred to as the "fifth wall"-and painting the ceiling in a colour other than standard white can greatly change the atmosphere of a room.
Softening the Vertical Elements: Light shades of blue or soft pastels can make a room feel taller and open up more, creating an airy atmosphere.
Drama Effects : To create an effect that is quite dramatic, a deep contrasting colour can be painted on the ceiling. Creating a warm or intimate ambiance to a space, this effect is most effective where spaces have soaring ceilings.
5. GTA Professional Painting Services
While DIY painting may appear to be frugal, professional painters in the GTA can guarantee a finish that lasts. There are several key advantages that experts provide for homeowners:
Better Preparation Surface preparation is necessary because, without it, the finish will never be smooth and durable. Professional painters handle all of the necessary prep work, such as filling holes, sanding, and priming surfaces.
Professional Quality Tools and Equipment Professional painters utilize the highest grades of paints, brushes, and rollers to achieve resilient and consistent results. Also, due to their access to higher-grade environmental options, they have the capability to work in a more ecologically friendly manner-ideal for an ecologically concerned homeowner.
Time-Efficiency: Painting the whole house is very time-consuming while trying to balance with work, family activities and other daily responsibilities. Professional painters tend to complete a job in the shortest time possible with minimum interference with your daily routine.
Guaranteed Results: Professionals in the GTA offer guarantees for their work. As long as the working conditions are perfect, paint job meets the expectations, and conforms to the high standards that the painting companies have.

How to choose the best aluminium window?
Choosing the best quality aluminum windows for your home or commercial space is essential for achieving both aesthetic appeal and performance. With numerous options available in the market, it's crucial to consider several key factors to ensure you make an informed decision that meets your specific needs and preferences.
First and foremost, when selecting the best quality aluminum windows, prioritize durability and strength.
