There's this fun bit of attention to detail In The Last Dam Job when they're discussing how to get Dubenich:

This isn't quite the full gif but what it is is that Sophie says that Dubenich is going to know every friend, every person that they would be expected to go to for help. And Nate looks at Eliot and goes "we find someone who is not a friend" to Sophie and Parker "someone who is not in the game" to Hardison "someone we do not trust." And that's exactly what happens.

if you had to base a new riverdale season off three movies, which would you choose and why? they could be tonal choices or you can pluck entire elements of the movies and work them in.

ok i broke the rules bc i didn't stick to movies, i went novels and pop culture with it too. and i also kind of embroidered a few references together around each main riff in a way that i think COULD be riverdalian, but these are my 3 selections:

jt leroy (2018). trashy iffy-hot-take kristen stewart/laura dern movie about a very 2000s literary scandal/internet drama run Too Far into irl drama that i think riverdale would know better what to do with. two ideas (this is a jughead plot btw):

put jughead in the dissociated trauma-projecting controlling persona-having laura albert/jt leroy role and rope veronica and reggie and their monetary-business motivations into the scam angle. monica posh savannah knoop stuff and rattling veronica and jughead around in a jar together intensely in a campy way

or step lightly outside the bounds of this script into the real livejournal and myspace based drama of it all and jughead's sometimes-characterization as a guy who needs help unpacking metaphor even though he's swimming in it. make him into one of the many emo band boys (ryan ross?? ryan ross????) who related so so so so sosososo much to the writing of jeremiah terminator and then had a whole crisis when j.t. was unmasked as a middle-aged woman with a metaphorical literary persona.

permissible bonus web-weaves: james frey a million little pieces and oprah, augusten burroughs and running with scissors. we're doing the 2000s obsession with author authenticity is-this-really-autobiographical-if-it's-not-literally-true-or-are-you-shaming-your-family-for-NOTHING questions and scandals. but we're especially doing the emo community freaking the fuck out about blorbo from their novels doing a catfish online to extend the persona just that much further.

the avril lavigne replacement conspiracy theory (linking the wiki even though what i'm REALLY thinking of here is this moving pandemic essay alexander chee my beloved posted that i can't locate now, riffing on themes of feeling like a ghost inhabiting your own life after a major trauma). they can work in some other famous body double / replacement and assassination conspiracies (paul is dead, jfk) too but avril is the main reference and this is a betty plot.

pull in some actual alexander chee images and motifs too maybe, his novels about csa grooming trauma and having complicated feelings about your intimate abusers via like grandiose opera/paris siege metaphors (the queen of the night) and fox demons (edinburgh) betty would eat, i fear, even if they're a step off her normal serial killer media mix. dark betty has the range <3

stephen king's the long walk / suzanne collins' the hunger games / battle royale / state-sponsored brutal murderous game show authority abuse dystopia media homage in general!! especially when it's homoerotic and full of ptsd and institutional abuse, because clearly this is a plot primarily for archie and the lads. imo the long walk ("how bad do you have to hate yourself to join the military" but it's game show horror) and the hunger games ("child stardom is traumatic institutional abuse especially in the era of social media and society simply pretends not to see it" but make it a ya game show adventure) should be the main references, but we could work the academic/art-competition angle of battle royale for kevin. as a treat. ok yeah and maybe work in that arnold schwarzenneger movie the running man too while we're here picking up interwoven motifs at the store. why not!

Ashley walks into one of Tulip's workshops, a small stack of what appear to be photographs in hand and a syrupy-sweet grin on his face, "So! Something very interesting happened at work today."

Tulip looks up from what she's working on (something that might have been a dishwasher at some point and now has far too many laser emitters), "Oh?"

"One of the other models called in sick just before she was supposed to show up (not that I can blame her, poor girl sounded like death on the phone), and everybody was scrambling to figure something out in time... and then the perfect substitute walks through the door, " On cue, he spreads the photos across what little free space the workbench. Some of them include himself, but all of them have a tall woman with long auburn hair, "Allow me to introduce; the lovely Seline."

"Oh wow, she's gorgeous," as Tulip looks the photos over, she slowly develops a contemplative frown, "and... somehow familiar."

Ashley's grin somehow gets wider, "I should hope so, she is your 'dear older sister' after all."

Tulip does a double-take, "wait, that's Archie!?"

"Yep! He happened to be visiting me, he does that sometimes, and when he saw we were having trouble he wanted to help. He was surprisingly okay with that help involving putting on a dress, so long as nobody knew it was him. Said it had something to do with swapping places with his sister when he was little?"

Tulip lets out a fond chuckle, "Oh yeah, he was kind of small as a kid so we fit in each-other's clothes, and sometimes we decided to pretend we were each-other and see how long it took for anyone to notice. We got really good at it too, one time not even our parents noticed for a whole week. 'Course, then puberty happened and he shot up like a tree, so..."

"That is, so cute! Anyway, yeah, he did really well. Though, apparently he's into method acting or something because he stayed in-character the whole day, even when he wasn't anywhere near the cameras. There were a few times I was almost convinced he'd forgotten Archie even existed."

"Oh yeah, he does that. Honestly I think he'd have actually become an actor if our parents hadn't decided to mold us into their mini-mes... and then their genderbent mini-mes when they realized I was the one who got the mad scientist genes and he was the one with a knack for schmoozing," she huffs in frustration, then shakes off the bad memories, "Still, it usually takes him a few sessions to slip that deep into a role. Wonder how he managed it..."

Spongebob Timeskip Card Voice: *Several Hours Earlier...*

Archie takes in every inch of the woman in the mirror, nearly all his attention on crafting a persona for her. It'd been a while since he'd played a part so far removed from the one his parents knew as their son, and the nature of this one in particular had brought up some of his favorite childhood memories, one that had recently become painful in hindsight.

It brings up the complicated emotions surrounding his sister and their broken (largely by his own actions and cowardice, he's aware) relationship. Chief among them, this time, being jealousy. It's easy to be jealous of her, really. She'd been brave and clever enough to get away from their parents, to use her talents for her own ends, to hold onto her passion for all those dark years, to take what had once been their prison and turn it into a home. Not to mention she'd become so much prettier than he- NOPE! Not going down that road just yet, he doesn't need one more way for Mother to turn him into another her.

He lets out a huff that blows the wig's bangs up a little, then shakes himself off, shuts his eyes, and refocuses on the task at hand.

He'd worked out just who Seline would be, now it's time to become her. He pictures a bubble, one that contains everything that is him, Gathering all the parts he wants to put into Seline, he pushes them into the side of the bubble, soon forming a large bump, and then a second, smaller bubble, one that slowly breaks off from the main one. The large bubble descends, coming to rest most of the way down into a bank of thick fog that represents the subconscious, while the smaller rises to the top of... whatever this mindscape is supposed to be.

Seline opens her eyes, releasing a contented sigh. That was... easier than it normally was, especially for such a new persona, but she doesn't pay that any mind. She has a job to do, after all, and she isn't about to make Ashley wait any longer than she already had.

As she makes her way out of the dressing room, Liana fades into view and grins like a shark. She'd been surprised that Archie was this sincere about helping, but she obviously couldn't trust an Orpheus not to find some way to screw things up for sweet little Ashley, so she'd decided to help him for once, as disgusting as that felt.

She'd originally been planning to possess him, not to the degree of full control, just to cover for any issues that might crop up, but that fascinating mental construct had been much more interesting. So, she'd helped it along, pushing the separation of the imaginary bubbles further Archie's mind would have managed on its own at this stage. From what she could tell, the resulting personality wouldn't even think of the name Archie unless someone else brought it up. She could've sent the main persona down even further and had Seline fully replace Archie, at least for a while, but that would have raised far too many questions, and probably got her caught by that strange purple poltergeist who seems to think it's Ashley's guardian angel.

Though, from what she'd seen of Archie's surface thoughts before the construct was in place, she wonders if...

Well, it doesn't matter really. Whoever they truly are under the surface, they're still an Orpheus.

(putting this in an ask instead of my own post since Archie's half adds a pretty damn major detail to them, and they're not my character so you obviously get the final say on whether or not it's canon)

Some whiteboard doodles... And a Parasaurolophus Toon concept - trying to nail the stylization and such - heavily inspired by the stylization in Paleo Pines... Been having fun with the beta! I've wanted other dinosaur Toons and my first idea was a Para so the fact the 'main' dinosaur of the game is a Parasaurolophus is perfect. So you remember this situation?

Well, Ash is starting small when it comes to messing with Archie. And by "small" I mean deploying Gengar to haunt him. Because we saw the events that led to Gengar joining the team, we know he's absolutely on-board with playing into the legends and stereotypes about his species. So for the past week or so, Archie's been having just absolutely terrible luck, both from poltergeist shenanigans and Gengar actually straight-up cursing him with bad luck by ducking into his shadow at just the Worst Possible Times, plus some unrelated things just genuinely going wrong at about the same time by pure coincidence. About the only thing that seems to be going right is his continued encounters with Ashley, who to his mind seems receptive but wanting to take things slow and get to know each other (this is almost entirely due to his own somewhat egocentric view of the world, with a slight pinch of Ash playing the roll he'd accidentally created to set up for the Long Game.)

And while Archie obviously doesn't suspect a thing about his recent string of misfortune (dude's probably a sceptic regarding ghosts despite everything he's seen be this point), someone else does. As it turns out, the city where this is happening just so happens to be the hometown of one of Tulip and Archie's great grandfathers (the one who also held the Orpheus name and fortune), and there's a ghost in town by the name of Liana Collins who has unfinished business with old Alfred, though given he's long dead by this point his descendants will do. Particularly this one who's the spitting image of his ancestor both in looks and personality.

Thing is, she obviously doesn't have any of the context for Ash's plan, or true identity. She just sees an innocent young woman all set to be used and discarded by an Orpheus, just like she was all those years ago (it's not what killed her, but it did ruin any chance at a good reputation and haunted her for the rest of her life and afterlife), and a strange spirit set on protecting her, and decides to throw her own hat into the ring.

And while Ash is kinda-sorta trying to not go too far with this prank (but not trying that hard because he's an Avatar and Archie's an asshole), Liana is in this for vengeance, and has no such moral limits.
