wanted to doodle these two so i was practicing using refs, one of them being the arcane artbook. and i thought silco was missing his pickaxe here lol so i gave one to him and you bet he'd look good using it.

never drew vander before so i still have to practice drawing his features, but i def will draw more of these two! brain is braining for the old men yaoi...

oh, that explains a lot.

it especially explains why I felt like ma meilleure ennemie was so specifically about ekko and jinx's relationship and their feelings for each other, yet it didn't feel like "let's explain everything that happens" type of song, it's more about exploring what went and still goes on between them behind the scenes, exploring what we don't get a chance to see.

it's like connecting the dots, in a good way, like you see the full picture after you complete the puzzle.

anyway, stromae is a genius and I am, as always, right this makes me wanna scream even more about "pretend like it's the first time" and how great it is.

Ekko and Jinx's History: A Simple Comment

So I read something the other day talking about how fans are making Ekko and Jinx's relationship romantic and not all male and female characters HAVE to be romantically involved. I agree with this. I'll go so far as to say that this is true for any character of any gender. In my own writing (with my original characters) I rarely have romantic undertones. Mostly just friends being friends. While I get the allure of the romantic chase, of most people we deal with in life we aren't connecting to them romantically. Friends are friends.

That said, this is not the case with Ekko and Jinx. From Ekko's release in 2015 there has always been some romantic undertones with Jinx. Riot has always been a bit mysterious about what his relationship is with Jinx. Ekko even has a line in the game where he says:

The foundation had been laid long before Arcane was released in 2021.

Between 2015 and 2021 (when Arcane was released), a lot of official art and such dropped hints about SOMETHING going on between them. Much like Jinx being Vi's sister. You have to remember that this was originally a secret. It was Ghostcrawler who finally confirmed fan theories, even though he tried to walk it back later. Oops! Ha, ha!

To add to the mystery, on both of their official pages, Ekko is listed as connected to Jinx and Jinx is listed as connected to Ekko. However, at no point does Riot explain how they're connected. Their stories don't mention the other at all. So this means that some things were planned, but they weren't ready to reveal. I'm still of a mind that they were waiting to use Arcane as a vehicle to get into Jinx's history and how that intersected with Ekko and Vi. Before Arcane, we knew very little about Jinx and how she ends up the way she does.

Then, before Arcane came out we got this little nugget in Legends of Runeterra:

Remember, this is 100% from Riot themselves. Not the fans. Riot laid the seeds down and it was the fans who picked up on it and ran. I doubt anyone would have ever thought there was something between Ekko and Jinx without Riot dropping hints. By the time we got to Arcane Season 1, the train was already in motion.

Let's not even forget the insane number of Jinx references in the True Damage video they released in 2020. Generally it wasn't odd to see Ekko and there would be some sort of Jinx reference somewhere. That wasn't true for Jinx until recently.

After Arcane, Riot themselves has been dropping hints like crazy. Jinx has been putting Ekko's hourglass symbol on stuff. League Brazil did a huge Twitter AMA with Star Guardian Ekko and Jinx. Jinx goes to the Grammys with Ekko.

So...while I see people saying that the fans were to blame for Jinx and Ekko being romantically involved, it should be pointed out that this is all Riot's doing. The best part is that the fans have been largely receptive to their efforts in promoting the couple. Riot has waited a long time to be able to say what they want to say about them.

Sorry for the long post, but I thought it was important to point out that it's not the fans who set this up. It'll be interesting to see where this all goes, but based on their track record so far, it should be clear where the end game is headed.

She-Ra PoP vs Arcane S2

Physically disabled character considered inferior by his society, abandoned instead of being helped

Technological genius who benefits from having a partner

Uses technology to improve his health and quality of life

Becomes fundamentally altered by a force outside his control (with Christian and cult references)

And now here's where She-Ra and Arcane's messages diverge: Hordak is consistently supported and loved by his partner throughout his journey. She doesn't let up when he tries to hide his pain from her.

She does NOT tell him that he is wrong to try to "fix" himself and actively helps him do so. She recognizes the validity of how he choses to deal with his condition, which was caused by genetic "imperfections" during the cloning process. But she impresses upon him that he does not deserve the physical pain or mental torment of being a "failure".

Her message was that his imperfections do not limit him or define him. They are a part of life, part of the world, and a part of him, and he is not a failure for having them.

Meanwhile in Arcane, Jayce criticizes Viktor for "wanting to cure what he thought were weaknesses" and specifically mentions his leg and disease. The two things that brought him chronic pain, progressively deteriorating quality of life, and one would ultimately kill him. Also, Viktor never actually expressed that he was ashamed of them. We as the audience are left to assume that's how he feels, because why wouldn't he? What else would a disabled person feel? Not that he is perfectly aware that Piltover's oppression and exploitation of his people likely directly contributed to both those issues. Not that he values himself for his intellect and contributions to Hextech even though society constantly prioritized Jayce. Nope, obviously he feels so bad about it that he tries to turn all of humanity into robots. On top of that, Christian Linke has explicitly said the Hexcore corrupted him and Sky was a manifestation of it manipulating him. So even if he did feel that way before, he's still not at fault for what's been going on.

And I think a key part of this is the mindset of the team who created this show. Was this simply a poorly executed but positive sentiment, or a symptom of ableist bias from a team of 3 able-bodied people? We can harp on Jayce all we want, but ultimately someone designed him this way, and THIS is what I take issue with. Christian also says in the art book explicitly that Viktor fixing his leg and spine make him lose part of his humanity. If this is the logic behind Jayce's monologue, it is NOT positivity. It is a direct shaming of a disabled person's right to choose how they take care of themselves, said by a character who has already violated Viktor's autonomy and wishes, written by a team that equates self-improvement with inferior humanity.

Amanda Overton has repeatedly mentioned she was inspired by She-Ra, which is pretty obvious here. Unfortunately, this isn't the unequivocally positive message she thinks it is, and she missed all the nuance of Entrapta and Hordak's conversations about it. A huge component of why it works in She-Ra is because Entrapta's wisdom comes from her understanding of her own "failures" and "imperfections" due to her autism, and Hordak reciprocates support throughout the show. One of the key members of her development team is an autistic person who provided a realistic view of what an autistic person can be like.

This is two people who understand each other's pain uplifting each other, NOT Entrapta being Hordak's miraculous savior at the 11th hour. Having Jayce need a leg brace for like 5 minutes does not give him ability to understand Viktor's lifelong struggles that were also killing him.

For future seasons, I hope they bring on staff who actually have any idea what they are fucking talking about.

Please don’t ask her about anything that isn’t club or sport related. If you ask for directions or how to get in contact with student services she’s got nothing

If she refs for a game and you’re on the opposing team you’d better watch yourself. She will rip you a new one if you break any rules. One time a player grabbed one of her member’s mask during a game and he left crying after Vi was done with him

Students run into her at the local hangouts a lot but it’s never awkward. just reminds you not to party too hard before the game tomorrow 

Leads pretty much every club but dance. Wouldn’t admit it but she has no sense of rhythm and refuses to even do it as a student

You can call her coach or captain or just Vi, whatever you want. But if you call her Violet she’ll stare you down until you correct yourself

Comes to class in jeans at best. Sweats, sometimes. 

He has one coffee mug that says #1 Dad and he refuses to use anything else

He puts fun questions on his exams, like riddles. If no one gets it, he actually gets sad

Whenever he erases the whiteboard he always misses a spot. He’s that professor.

If he catches you plagiarizing, you get one pass before he reports it. But you have to come to his office so he can tell you how disappointed he is and how much potential you have

He gives a seminar about how worried he is for the future of education and the wellbeing of the next generation and everyone leaves feeling guilty. Everyone.

Make a pop culture reference in class and everything will grind to a halt so you can explain it to him. Visuals help.

If you play music in the library she’ll walk up to you and just go “are you joking”

Have a phone call on speaker and she’s hanging it up for you

There’s signs telling you to be quiet every three feet

If you see her outside of school no you didn’t

She’s in charge of leading classes on accessing academic databases and she fucking hates it

Somehow knows where every book is down to the shelf. She’ll tell you what you’re looking for before you can finish your sentence

technically she’s supposed to do a walkthrough before closing for the night but if you can’t read the library hours on the signs it’s your fault if you get locked in

Vertin's Stuff

Her name is in the upper corner of the page.

Her Suitcase has her name on the front.

All the items I could decipher on Vertin's Bookshelf. She has vinyls, books, and her umbrella which I can remember of the top of my head. She also has books on basic arcane skills and how to speak to Critters.

Vertin's camera and brooch. We can also see a teleporter floppy disk. Interesting how the moon keeps popping up in the game's context. She also owns a copy of "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, which is underneath her photo.

Piano, books, computers, Schneider's dress, potions, red chair, black couch (near piano), painting easels, etc. All of this stuff was here in prologue (except dress) so its safe to assume they belong to Vertin. Screenshots included for comparison. An artist, a photographer, a musician, a strategist. She may suck at school but she excels in the arts I guess.

Unless her paintings suck because that would be hilarious. Although, it makes you wonder who that ballerina she keeps painting is. At least, I assume its a ballerina. She's painted her twice.

So for the uninitiated, there are two versions of the Art book that's coming out for Arcane next year. One is more Vi themed with obvious references to her and Silco but one is Also Ekko themed as well. Another note is that one of the people who worked on it confirmed that the directors of Arcane were heavily involved in the making of it and approved everyone little detail so do with that information what you will.

I’ve never actually see Alita Battle Angel, but I saw some models/Dolls people made with the porcelain body version of Alita and got struck with an Idea.

LoL Viktor, before they fully replaced him with The Arcane Machine Herald (for whatever reason?), but a mix between him and the porcelain vessels Arcane Viktor makes and controls in S2!!

Honestly think it’d be really neat to see a mix between them, because I think it’d make for a neat way to combine the two designs and concepts together! And so far I personally have not come across any art of this and would love to see everyone’s interpretations of it because this community’s art is literally always so beautifully done!

I myself may end up drawing up something, if I do I’ll be sure to post it of course :]!

Ok ok,

I'm getting what they're doing here...Season 1 everyone knows Jinx is Silco's. Everyone references that he's her father, she's his daughter. It's a fact everyone understands. We get only small snippets of Vander being a father figure to Jinx when she was young, the only two I can name off my head is him giving her the juice in the cup and him saying to Vi "Take care of Powder".

Season 2 rolls around and the writers make a hell of an effort to say "Look, Vander is her dad too!" with Jinx herself saying "dad" twice, her sniffing Vander's jacket and not Silco's (which tbh I'm a little pissed abt, but moving on) and the whole "he's your dad too". This time, they really really put the other father figure in the subtext, barely giving him mention at ALL except for in drawings from the Art of Arcane book and some subtle cues in the show (like, she write DADA or FAMILY all over most of the art pieces with Silco), as well as Young Silco's hair being pretty much Jinx's iconic hairstyle and the whole heartbreaking water burial scene we get.

By the end of the series, we know she loved them both very much and they loved her very much in turn, regardless if it was healthy or not. They just switched which dynamic was in the subtext.

Why I don’t like the Silco x Vander and Chishiya x Niragi ships (even though no one asked, I’m gonna yap about it)

Silco x Vander ship:

They are shown to be direct parallels to Vi and Jinx and although I've heard arguments that that's just to mirror their live path I think there's more to it, in season 1 their fights mirror one another showing how similar their relationship dynamics are (siblings, even though Silco and Vander are not blood related, I am aware). And if you're going to comment about them being similar to Viktor and Jayce I disagree, they're closer direct parallels to Vi and Jinx, and even going with that comparison, Jayce only says Viktor was like a brother ONCE, reflecting a temporarily one sided relationship dynamic in my opinion.

"You were my brother" -Vander to Silco

"He was like a brother to you"- Jinx to Silco

The common argument for this ship is theyre meant to be interpreted as "brothers in arms" not actual brothers but I disagree, I understand that can be a common phrase in queer media but since in the Arcane world homophobia doesn't seem to be at all prevalent, I see there's no reason to just not call each other old friends or ex's if thats what the case was, but they used "brother" to refer to each other many times which I think is purposeful by the makers of the show.

In the official art book as well it claims the two men had a “brotherly connection” and “loved each other as brothers”, but I believe the art book should come secondary to the actual media which is why I focus the most on what’s shown.

Chishiya x Niragi:

This one’s gonna be rather short and sweet, I don’t think it’s morally okay to ship a canon rapist with any character, it’s okay if you like Niragi as a well written villain but to erase his wrongs or wish them upon another character in a relationship (which is basically what you’re doing if you ship an abuser with another character) is wrong even though I’m aware it is a fictional piece of media.

In conclusion, ship what you want, but here were my reasons for disliking the ships personally and to explain why the shippers are on my DNI list, I feel that the ships you feel strongly about say a lot about you as a person, and I personally have found I don’t like the kind of people who love either of these ships while being very aware of their negative sides.
