Pelikultura 2018: The CALABARZON Film Festival #BuhayElbi
It is yet another year for Pelikultura: The CALABARZON Film Festival, a three-day event filled with workshops, forums and of course, film screenings. One of their events is the #BuhayElbi competition wherein students get to showcase the diversity in culture of the Los Baños Community. The UP Film Circle submitted six films, including this year’s winner, Omads.
#MyFirstVlog
#MyFirstVlog follows Rafa as he tries to capture what he loves about UPLB and the community around it in his first vlog. The short but sweet film
directed by Ana Salvador captured the iconic Oblation to the unconventional places in a vlog about UPLB.
With the concept of making unfamiliar places familiar, it showed that vlogging, other than it to be just a typical thing to do while travelling, is also personal and a way of sharing a part of yourself to the world.
I also enjoyed the comedic approach that they incorporated to the concept. The way that each scene was cut, the editing, the dialogue and the way Rafa delivered it were absolutely amazing. It made the film interesting and left me laughing for the entire minute and 58 seconds and until I was done watching it. I watched it a few more times after and the humor still got me.
Overall, I think #MyFirstVlog is a light-hearted film that combined a trending practice, an intimate experience and humor very well. If you want to lighten things up, take a break for a couple of minutes to watch this.
Homesick
Have you ever had that heavy feeling that makes everything around you turn to gray as your memories grow brighter in technicolor, the voices you used to hear louder and the places you used to walk in farther away from you. Homesick made me feel that.
Homesick, a short film directed by Leo Diamante, is about a boy’s life in Los Baños. It follows through different places from the famous landmarks such as the Oblation and the quiet unfamiliar streets within F.O. Santos to the solace of his own bedroom making its audience feel the protagonist’s yearning for the entire two minutes.
For a quiet film, it was surprising how it left me with a heavy heart. The short stills of places and Kenneth Rementilla’s Recollection constructed a silent monologue telling you the way the protagonist felt about leaving LB while making you remember how you feel about LB. And that heavy feeling just doubled upon hearing the voice of Geraldine Loares towards the end of the film.
All in all, Homesick is a cascade of intense emotions about a place that reminds you of unforgettable memories, remarkable people and even the most mundane things in your life. This is absolutely my favorite and I think everyone who loves and thinks that LB is home will agree with me.
Jeyl Breyk
Upon seeing the way the title of this short film was written, I was already ready to laugh and witness a light-hearted creation after the heavy feelings Homesick gave me.
Jeyl Breyk, directed by Gil Angelo Bosita, tells the story of three roommates. It simply follows through a portion of their lives wherein they live with people of their age coming from different backgrounds, struggling to balance academics and personal responsibilities with the unlikely combination of a jailbreak and a brownout.
Showing how it feels to live in a dormitory while recreating an actual event that happened in LB last year is creative and a great concept to build a film from. But the way that the dialogue between the characters felt unnatural and a bit exaggerated. I think half of it was because of the way the script was written and the other half was from the delivery of lines by the guy doing his laundry and the guy wearing a face mask.
But in general, it was an entertaining film with a good concept that represented an essential part of the elbi life. Yes, the film had that potential and could have been a lot funnier but all in all, it was still a delight.
Kuwit
Kuwit, also comma in English, indicates a pause between parts of a sentence. With this said, I initially thought that this would be a metaphor for yet again another sad film. But I was wrong.
Directed by Mannielieen Cagatulla and Manuel Balmeo, Kuwit is a short documentary film that used a series of interviews about a certain subject that has been a big part of the UPLB community. It also included the different types of interviewees and covered all the reactions that there is about the loss of a valued presence. These details made it look genuine while sparking up curiosity on what or who these people are talking about.
Furthermore, the concept of representation of things or even people we tend to lose over time was excellent, making the film already relatable from the beginning and as it progresses with the element of mystery still intact. It also became a good entry point for comedy making the film both humorous yet meaningful as a whole.
Although the film was nothing grand in particular, the concept, directing, acting and editing were remarkable. It’s definitely one of the films wherein the elbi community can identify with from start to finish.
Sunday
In a student’s life, there always has to be that point where you slipped yourself away from your budget and realize that you lost control over your expenses for the past few days. By that moment, you clearly forgot about it because there are tons of things on your plate and now you sit, hungry and infuriated with yourself. That is what Sunday is about.
Written and directed by Mac Andre Arboleda and starred by a great friend, Alelee Alvarez, I was absolutely excited to see this two-minute film. It follows Alelee on her quest to find food when she woke up hungry and out of money on a Sunday.
The thing that I liked about it the most is the use of a pale color scheme combined with a background music that suggests what it feels like to wake up on a Sunday, hungry and hopeless, without the use of words.
All in all, the film was pretty simple and straightforward yet it also managed to be light and witty making it a must see for everyone.
Omads
Upon reading the title of the winning film for this year’s #BuhayElbi competition, I got curious what Omads actually mean. I’m sometimes slow at understanding jokes so I actually had to watch the film first before getting what it was.
A film directed by Juan Magno Iya, Omads tells the story of Hulyo and follows him through the struggles of a student on his way to an 8 A.M. exam. Inspired by Terry Gilliam’s Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and Christian Linaban’s Superpsychocebu, it combined the films’ recurring theme and an ordinary situation of a UPLB student.
Being naïve of what these films actually are, I initially didn’t know what to say other than it was light, funny and trippy all at the same time. But upon a closer look on the catalysts of this winning piece, I think I saw what set this film apart from all the others.
Thinking about the theme #BuhayElbi, the films mentioned above were sort of already expected to be present whereas Omads brought something innovative. It was refreshing to see a new genre, despite of it having certain stigmas, to be combined with another ordinary situation in UPLB.
Altogether, there might be confusion for people who are not yet aware of this film genre but it’s always nice to see something new and get out of the ordinary. Omads did that. And besides, it already won this year, I don’t see any reason why you shouldn’t see it.
It’s a great selection and you should definitely watch these films. See more of UP Film Circle’s works at facebook.com/upfilmcircle or follow them on twitter (@upfilmcircle).

ELBIKON 2018
Last February 17, Magpies launched a new project entitled "Orie Chef" at the fifth installment of ELBIKON organized by The Graphic Literature Guild held in the Baker Memorial Hall in the University of the Philippines Los Baños. ELBIKON is an annual comics convention joined by comic creators, zinesters, and other artists in and outside Los Baños.
This year's ELBIKON featured more than 100 artists and guests including Richard Mercado (Uy Si Crush), Marian Hukom (Marianie) and Gioseppe Custodio (Loser Mangaka). Rafael Gumboc of GLG gave a workshop on composing comic panels. EK Gonzales aka komikninja also gave a talk on reviewing comics and urged listeners to support the comics community.
Magpies' Electromilk talked about how to make art when you hate yourself and gave tips including "obsessing over imagery you enjoy" and telling your mom you love her. Also part of the program was Magpies' Mac Arboleda aka Asshulz's presentation of our latest project in his workshop on comics collaboration.
"Orie Chef" is a collaborative komiks zine inspired by the iconic Marjorie Sy Cua whose multiple accounts with different names and spooky descriptions were widely speculated by Internet users, particularly those from Facebook and Reddit. The komiks zine was done experimentally; each Magpies member had to take turns drawing one panel each, responding to the previous one (if any) without being allowed to look at the others. The final output is a folded zine with seven panels and a rather absurd story.
In his workshop, Arboleda reminded attendees that "An artist's work is not just a product of his own" and in fact "a collaboration with his influences, the kuya printers who publish and staple his work, his audiences." This year's ELBIKON had a bit fewer artists and attendees than the last one, but that doesn't mean we won't be there next year. Long live komiks!

Fortunately, even with the privilege of being an American born woman I actually have a passport. I am glad to have obtained a recent passport back in 2010. Part of me is compelled to wonder if this (the passport rules mentioned in the article just for domestic travel) might set a dangerous precedent of affecting the ease at which Americans citizens from certain states can easily move to other wealthier states for job opportunities within 20 years or less. Fortunately, both my husband and I are blessed with living in an area of good economic opportunities and the other area that I had my eyes on could be accessed via less than a 5 hour greyhound bus trip or a car as it is a 3 hour and a half drive south of the area where we currently live and around 200 miles (fortunately I do have a driver’s license). However, I am also blessed with a good job in the Washington D.C. area and I am also in the process of choosing wisely where to live for the rest of my current lifetime by the year 2020 even if others may consider me dreaming too big on whatever areas I have in mind for my husband and I to reside long-term. In summary; fortunately even if what this article implies comes out to be true that this would have little effect on a person such as myself. However, I hope that this article is only speculation and just a way to test how many people respond to this online article because putting rules on how easily an American citizen can travel between various states could open a Pandora’s box or slippery slope of unintended controversies in the near future after the measure is implemented.

I have to admit that Cindy Arboleda shares some motivational articles that spark curiosity. Peja Jordan and Shamari Whitfield are clearly motivated, ambitious, and driven. Naturally it is easy to see that both women have a bright future ahead of them. The fact that Jenise Stowers, an aunt of Peja Jordan, shows support also bodes well for the present and future of the Lil Girls’s Glam Party Bus. I say this because yes I’m intuitively and logically aware that you have to believe in yourself and always be emotionally resilient regardless of how many people in your immediate environment believe in you. However, the fact that a family member of Peja Jordan is giving support also adds an important dimension of spiritual and emotional encouragement as a powerful buffer through both challenging and good times.

I am fortunate to have come across this article and spotted some information similar to this in a Washington Post article yesterday referencing Canada and another article Washington Post article today pertaining to potential cities for Amazon headquarters. Obviously, as with other people I have ideas of areas that Amazon would be ideal for basing their second headquarters at. What I do want to say is that an ideal area that Amazon parks its headquarters would be one with a strong military andor government presence-regardless of the U.S. State that Jeff Bezos goes with for the obvious reason that military and federal government employees would spend their dollars at businesses that benefit private sector workers/minimum wage employees (due to the company of Amazon being a private sector employer).

Writer Danielle Wiener -Bronner is both persuasive and well-meaning with this article as I am blessed with an amazing boss, great managers, and ambitious coworkers. Additionally both my boss and managers are considerate in granting me certain days off from time to time if it would help boost my morale such as for my birthday off request to get some time with my sweet and incredible husband. However, Bronner is overlooking that many people pursuing a 2nd degree or graduate degree intuitively see what can happen in the far future-unless they get more schooling. However, in Bronner's defense, this actually makes up my mind even more to get more schooling as I was actually pondering this subject some more prior to coming across this article. When I speak of the future in this context I mean 25 years or less from this year.

Regardless of whether I am in the minority or majority of my sentiment I would have to say that it is a good thing that former President Obama is getting himself politically involved in the political race of Virginia governor for Ralph Northam. This is especially because the state of Virginia has both close proximity to the Washington D.C. area and one of the largest military presences in the United States (the Hampton Roads Virginia area) made up of a diverse population of voters from various backgrounds.
