Random question, Prince but do you think Victoria or Gerard had military backgrounds? Maybe serving themselves or had parents that served?
Tumblr media
I want to preface this answer with a caveat: this might be the most speculative meta I've ever written. While I'm going to try to draw as much evidence as I can from canon, I don't think it would be out-of-the question for people to disregard it on its surface merits.
So, here goes. I don't think that the Argents would join the military and they would strongly discourage their children from joining the military. I'm sure that during the time of the draft there might have been some Argents serving, but it would be under duress. If you accept the same head canon that I do, that Victoria was also from a hunting family, she would not be either. I think the reasons would be historical, practical, and philosophical.
Historical: Of all the characters in the Teen Wolf series, Marie-Jeanne Argent née Valet had the most emotionally true (if not entirely rational) reaction to the discovery that her beloved relative turned out to be one of the most prolific serial killers in that world let alone a terrifying demonic werewolf. As we see in The Maid of Gévaudan (5x18), she reacted with outright condemnation, hunting him down over three years and destroying all trace of him with a damnatio memoriae, which in reality meant destroying her own past, too. We can assume that the Argent Code was written by her, including the part where any hunter who was Bit by a werewolf had to kill themselves. This is extreme behavior (even if valid) and it is echoed in the revulsion non-corrupted Argents like Chris and Allison had when discovering Kate's and Gerard's crimes. It was certainly less permissive than the Hale family's tendency to react to deaths caused by their family which ranged from outright condoning ("But still beautiful, just like the rest of you") to dismissive (after all, how many people did kooky Uncle Petey kill, including the guy he shoved alive into a burning barrel, and still have the keys to the family home?).
Considering that Sebastian became a demon wolf while he was serving in the French king's war with England across an entire ocean in their respective colonies, I don't think it's a stretch for Marie-Jeanne in establishing her code to steer her descendants away from military service. It might even have been a requirement.
Practical: While both the military and hunters use weapons, military service wouldn't seem to bear much resemblance to hunter training. It appears to me to be much closer to espionage or criminal work. Hunting werewolves requires training in specific weapons (bows, tasers, and poisons), technology (hypersonic emitters), and techniques (torture, infiltration, intimidation, and cleaning up evidence). In addition, the soldiers of the Argent family exhibit a level of discernment when it comes to tactics and targets that the military simply would not tolerate. Chris points as much out to Kate in Code Breaker (1x12):
Chris: No one asked you to murder innocent people. There were children in that house, ones who were human. Look what you're doing now. You're holding a gun on a 16-year-old boy with no proof he spilled human blood.
Later on in Relics (6x04), Chris explains that he should have intervened when he saw how Gerard was training Kate. That implies to me that while Argent soldiers are supposed to follow the lead of the matriarch, they're also expected to do more than just follow orders. While civilization demands we hold individual military soldiers to answer for their conduct, I can tell you from personal experience that military training does not have a goal to instill a sense of individual agency.
Philosophical: In my encounters with real-life military people, it is my experience that they see themselves and the military as a whole as an immanent part of society itself. They enable civilization to exist; they uphold society's laws and mores as one of its pillars. I am sure that many people on this site would disagree with that assessment, but I'm talking about the perception within military culture itself. The military focus on being a vital part of their country, and when they err it is when they come to believe that they are the most important part and thus have a greater right to say how a country and a civilization will behave.
One of the things I've noticed about the Argents and the other hunting family feature, the Calaveras, is that they don't consider themselves part of the greater society. They see themselves as protecting it from monsters that the average person cannot comprehend, and while they certainly do infiltrate law enforcement and emergency services, they don't seek permanent authority over the mundane social institutions. This is one of the significant departures that marked Monroe as different from previous organized hunters, and one that made her more dangerous. Victoria, Araya, Chris and Allison (and when they weren't being selfishly corrupt, even Gerard and Kate) saw themselves as operating outside of it all as a necessity. They work with criminals like the yakuza; they hire mercenaries; and they understand that they will never be fully accepted.
Chris: We're gonna be pariahs in this town. Victoria: We can handle it.
Monroe, on the other hand, organized hunters to protect society, but she wanted to change society as well. She accused the werewolves not only of being monsters by virtue of their natures and by their acts, but by the power that privileged them ("No one should have this power"), and she accused people like Sheriff Stilinski of abetting that unfair advantage. (I will never forgive Teen Wolf for giving up on exploring that difference half-way through 6B.) Since Gerard was only interested in using Monroe, he didn't train to see herself the way he and his family saw themselves: protectors working from the outside.
All these things lead me to believe that the Argents wouldn't have military training, not even corrupt ones like Gerard or Victoria.

Fanvid : Bad Things by niyalune
The adults of Beacon Hills are pretty handsy with the teenagers... aka "the bad touch vid"
This is very fun! The adults of Beacon Hills *are* v handsy. And the video is so well put together. (Heed the warnings, I can understand if it's not everyone's cup of tea.)
🛳️ A fic that brought you aboard a new ship.
the family of things by spikeface (sceo)
In the summer before his sophomore year of college, Scott finds himself heading up the coast on a mission with Lydia and Stiles—and Theo.
This fic really opened me up to scott/theo as a concept. It's also one of my favorite exploration of top/dom Scott in a fic. It has fantastic stydia friendship and the sciles of it. It's a character study in so many ways and so lovingly grounded in canon while being a very realistic exploration of post-canon. Love.
😭 A fic that ripped your heart out (but it hurt so good)
White Satin by goddessofcruelty
“Her name was Araya, it was 1973, and we thought we could change the world.”
There are so many fics I could put here. But this is the devastating Satomi/Araya fic I did not know I needed. Oh it hurts. <3

BRUH
Okay I f*cking LOVE this episode, dude.
First of all, as messed up as everything Araya did was, I kind of don't hate her, because it was exactly what she said--a test. And Scott passed with flying colors. And it sucked, and I hated that she put our teens through that, but she knew what she was doing, and it worked, and it got us answers.
Plus, it gave me the chance to just continue to appreciate how protective they all are of each other, and how loyal they are, and how they just have each other's backs no matter what.
Like, everything between Kira, Scott, and Lydia was so good. I obviously love Malira (apparently lol), but I also still love Scira, and the absolute guilt in Kira's eyes, but the continued encouragement and support from Scott, and the way he just kept locking eyes with her and telling her that it was okay, because he could handle it, all while Lydia just kept looking at him worriedly, but knew he was right--so many emotions, but so well done and so well shot.
Meanwhile, Stiles and Malia were downstairs, and Malia was doing everything she could to focus on the conversation, so Stiles got down close to her and did such a good job of turning his own panic and worry into something encouraging for her (random aside to acknowledge the fun little energy of the earlier scene with the four of them when Stiles had to remind Malia that we don't leave friends behind--"Believe it or not, that's progress." XD XD). And then the fact that kissing him is what got her to concentrate, so then she was able to focus on the conversation, and fill Stiles in, and now they're all on the same page when they finally do get out. Like, Stydia is still my OTP, but I am kind of digging the energy between Stiles and Malia, not gonna lie. That said, I also don't see it lasting, and I don't really want it to, but I'll allow it for the moment lol.
AND THEN! The "reveal" (I'm putting that in quotes because it's not a reveal for us, but it is for the pack lol) was SO well shot and SO well done and just everything about it was so good, and honestly? I kind of like Araya. Like, her methods are extreme and unorthodox, but she clearly follows the code, and I respect her for that. She's letting our heroes go so that they can hunt down the people she considers significantly more immoral than our pack (because KATE certainly is for crying out loud), and she's letting Scott go because she can see that he really did earn that Alpha status completely on his merit alone, and I appreciate that.
Anyways. Braeden's taking us to maybe hopefully Kate (as an aside, I freaking LOVE that X Ambassadors song that came with Braeden's entrance and that was extremely well used), and this is either gonna go really well, or really poorly, but our pack is together, and everyone's more or less okay, and I will take it!!
Man this is a really good episode. I'm so glad I finally started Season 4.

I would love to hear your take on how Stiles organized the trip to Mexico and got everyone on board with saving Derek between S3 and S4.
so here's the thing. they show a flashback in the dark moon as to what occurred. i think it's important to remember that derek is kidnapped in the direct aftermath of stiles being processed and allison dying. so needless to say people have things go on.
it's scott that realizes something is amiss. he and stiles have this exchange:
stiles: "okay. so how long has it been?" scott: "weeks. he hasn't gotten back to any of my texts." stiles: "has derek ever returned your texts?" scott: "once. definitely once."
the derek and scott dynamic is unhinged. you know bastard man derek hale leaves scott on read constantly and that one time he answered was probably "k" or some shit.
love how stiles specifically says "your" texts. not any or our but your. derek totally responds to stiles. scott goes on to say it felt different and he went to the loft where he found the alarm still on and everything seemed okay but he found the shell casings left behind by the calaveras.
i actually assume it felt different to scott because by this time scott is an alpha now. while i don't think he and derek and necessarily pack he and derek do have a complicated connection that might've allowed him to sense something was off.
scott explains that he contacted deaton who informed him that the casings belong to the calaveras out of mexico.
he brought lydia to see if she could get anything off the shell casings. she feels like something isn't right and is seemingly sensing derek's state of suspension being unable to truly tell if he's alive or dead.
scott is the one who decides mexico is where they look after stiles asks how they find the calaveras.
what's interesting in this flashback in regards to stiles is that he asks twice if derek's dead. he is anxious mcanxious person. he sounds upset when he asks lydia if derek's dead. he is also the one that insists scott go on ahead with braeden to go find derek and he's the own who recognizes teen derek.
the attachment is real.
i think the plan to get derek was a scott-n-stiles plan. it has all the hallmarks of both their cleverness and also their recklessness. going directly into the calaveras stronghold? insane.
the money is from the events of silverfinger from the japanese mafia that was used by void stiles to set derek and chris argent up for murder. araya says as much.
i don't think it'd take much for them to convince anyone to go. derek's theirs even if they're not best friends he's their local cryptid damn it. kira hung out with derek the pervious season. malia may have been indifferent but came along anyway because she was asked by her new friends. lydia is devoted to scott and stiles by this point and reasonably is concerned about derek because she's a normal person.
scott and derek have a complicated relationship that is layered but under it all all is a firm belief on both sides that they are the only person allowed to annoy, torment and kick each other's asses.
stiles is just unhinged about derek hale. news at 11.
tl;dr the dumbass duo goes to rescue the dumbass that completes them.

You may not have an answer for this but I feel it would still be fun to ask. Were there any hunters that hunted anything besides werewolves? We know that the Beastionary exist that depicts all of the different supernatural creatures. However in all the families, and individuals, that we've seen with the exception of the first Argent to make a kill. It seems that no hunter is ever prepared to fight anything besides werewolves. Which paints the picture that either werewolves are more plentiful than anyone would think and no one thinks they'll run into anything else. Or, that there's some in-house xenophobia (might not be the right word) going on in the community. Because gun happy Kate walked into the room with a nice piece of machinery ready to go ham on werewolves right out of her car. Yet the Calaveras, who operate out of Mexico, can't deal with a Berserker? And let's start to get the Kenama mystery. Nice for a plot device but, you mean none of the hunters thought "hey what if it was this thing" and then said "Hey I know how to kill it\ defend against it"? I know teen Wolf isn't Supernatural but, one does still make you think about the other in terms of competency.
Tumblr media
First, I want to address your quote: "I know that Teen Wolf isn't Supernatural ..." You answered your own question right there. I stopped watching Supernatural after its first couple of seasons for exactly the same reason. Before it decided to descend into full-throated blasphemy against my religion and indulgent Chosen-One power fantasies, it was a monster-of-the-week show, and that meant it had to obey certain conventions; not because of a lack of creativity or skill but because the very format demanded that the obstacle be discovered, explored, and resolved in one episode. I heard that they adapted multi-episode arcs later, but I was no longer invested.
The necessity of the format required the Winchesters to be highly competent. No matter what they were fighting, the lore and means to defeat it had to lay within their immediate abilities. The character's human frailties were present but never seemed to become an obstacle which couldn't be surmounted in 45 minutes.
Teen Wolf also had conventions it had to follow. In its case, the obstacle was discovered, explored, and resolved over an entire season of 10 to 12 episodes (and in one case 20 episodes). In addition, the protagonist was a teenage boy and his allies, most of whom were also teenagers. They were also not professionals, which meant not only did they lack all the skills to handle the events (which is what attracted me to the show) but they also had to be drawn into the conflict and still try to maintain their normal lives while coping with it.
One of the consequences of this format, however, was that the civil authorities and vigilante groups who were present could not ultimately be the people who resolved the conflict of the season. More often, they were obstacles to that resolution. This didn't mean that they were incompetent. This meant that the writers -- sometimes successfully and sometimes not -- had to create situations where the protagonist and his allies were in a more advantageous position than these other groups.
This brings us to the Argents and the other hunters -- though in every season, at least one member of the Argent family was part of the protagonist's ally group and provided invaluable assistance in resolving the season's conflict. We know that the Argents fought more than just werewolves, though they were inspired by La Bête du Gévaudan. The Bestiary should be proof enough, but if it wasn't there is this speech that Chris Argent gives to Derek Hale in Echo House (3x20).
Chris: ... You ever heard of the Berserkers? Germanic warriors.
Derek: They wore the skins of bears to channel their ferocity.
Chris: They didn't just wear them. They became them. You know, a couple of years ago, a family came to us for help with their son. This group of teenagers, they were doing all sorts of rituals with animal skins. Somehow they tapped into it. But with Berserkers, the human side doesn't last long. They're not tempered by the moon.
Derek: He killed people?
Chris: He tore them apart. Eventually, I had to tell the family their son was gone. It took three of us to take him down. Almost every bullet we had ...
So yeah, hunters know about Berserkers, and just like Peter, they were terrified of them. Now imagine fighting two Berserkers (three if you include Scott) who, while not being tempered by the moon, are being controlled by La Loba, who is not only a Nagual werejaguar but also one of the Argent's "star players." Kate Argent knew hunter tactics, even the Calavera's tactics and their capabilities, and could react accordingly. The Calaveras would have had a difficult time against a single Berserker according to Chris's story, but against something like that? Victory was never assured.
It was impossible to be always prepared for every monster they might hunt. The Bestiary, as Allison stated, is over a thousand-pages long. Even given the Argent's significant ties to the political and law enforcement communities -- repeatedly demonstrated -- they wouldn't be able move through the world openly with all the force they had all the time. Only once they identify the monsters they are hunting, they might be able to get the proper supplies, as for example, when Chris Argent tracked down that particular species of wolf's bane in Season 4.
You brought up the Kanima; while it's in the Bestiary, it is exceedingly rare. Neither Deaton nor Chris could identify it at first. Gerard may have, but if he did, he concealed that information because he could use the Kanima exactly in the way he tried -- to get Derek to give him the Bite to cure his cancer and then become an alpha werewolf himself. How competent would the Argents have been against the Kanima if they weren't being betrayed by one of their own? How competent would the Argents have been in Season 1 if Kate wasn't also, at the same time, trying to cover up her violation of the Code (and massacre of innocent werewolves and humans).
As for why the Argents and the Calaveras seemed ready to fight werewolves? Because they were in Beacon Hills, historically founded by the Hale werewolf pack as a sanctuary, and a place where other werewolf packs came for advice and guidance. If you're an animal hunter going to the desert, you don't bring the equipment you use for polar bears.
These plot points were included to keep the focus of the seasons on Scott, the lead protagonist, and his ally group, without minimizing the Argent's story or the threat of the Calaveras or even the renegade hunting family in Monstrous (4x10). It was used for great effect in Season 6B as well, with Monroe's crusade. After Images (6x13) showed Gerard deftly hunting Brett but also manipulating Liam into revealing himself to the general populace, while we learned in Pressure Test (6x15) that they killed all of Satomi's pack.
Yet, the narrative focus and thematic requirements determined that it couldn't be the established hunter family that solved the problems, especially since one of the themes of Teen Wolf is that violence, while sometimes necessary, is frequently not the solution to these conflicts.

Plot Bunnies: Gabriela "Gabi" Calavera
When Araya Calavera told Scott McCall that the Calaveras would come for him if he turned another human into a werewolf- she wasn’t kidding.
In fact, the Calavera matriarch sends her granddaughter, Gabriela, to keep an eye on the McCall pack.
Gabi certainly didn’t expect for the monsters she would be watching to be so… endearing.
She certainly didn’t expect that when a dead pool comes out with a majority of the pack’s names on it, Gabi picks up her weapons in favor of supernatural beings.
Maybe Chris Argent had a point when he said the Argents had changed their code to “We protect those who cannot protect themselves.”

OKAY SO THAT EPISODE WAS AMAZING!!
That ending was INSANE, OMG!!!
And NOW I KNOW HOW LIAM BECAME A WEREWOLF!!!
And you know what, that's actually a better reason than I was expecting and I will totally take it.
I don't know what I was expecting, but it wasn't that, and I liked that sooo much better.
Like, Scott literally bit Liam out of pure panic in a desperate grab to save his life, and it worked! And that's great, and I am all here for that, but now Scott has to, like, process the positives and negatives of what he just did (which INCLUDES Araya Calavera's warning) and, based on his facial expression at the end, I don't think he liked the final outcome.
But you know what, Scott? You saved Liam's life, and that's all that matters. You are still a hero, and--oh my god please don't start turning this into more self-sabotage you really don't need any more reasons to hate yourself.
YOU SAVED HIS LIFE! PLEASE FOCUS ON THAT! WE CAN DEAL WITH THE REST LATER! And you KNOW Stiles will help with that part.
Besides! Now we just get more additions to our little found family. See? It'll be great!
...please don't feel bad, Scott. Baby you saved his life, okay? Panicked or not, you did the right thing, I promise.
ANYWAYS!
I was right about Sean being the bad thing instead of whatever-the-f*ck-creepy-dude's-name-is being the evil one. Mouthless Creepo (that's what we're calling him until I figure out what I'm actually supposed to call him lol) must be some sort of bounty hunter or monster hunter or something like it. A weird one at that, but definitely a hunter of some sort. He can't just be, like, a general hunter, though, because he left Scott alone, which means he's not after werewolves--or, at least, not until he needs to be. Hence...bounty hunter theory?
I don't know, but he still makes me nervous, and I just hope there doesn't come a day when he decides to come after Scott (but I'm sure there will be, because why else would he be around??).
Also, that was a really random wendigo name drop, but it DOES explain the human meat locker, and now I'm wondering if we'll run into anymore? God I hope not. Wendigos are creepy. And gross. As evidenced by everything that just happened.
ANYWAYS!
Other positives.
Scott popping in and saving Melissa's life was amazing and beautiful as always, and Melissa being the tough as nails mom that she is and immediately getting back up and telling Scott to "go get that son of a bitch." We love her. This is why Scott is as amazing as he is. <3
Stalia is actually super adorable and I love it more and more as we keep going. Like, the moment where Malia tries to get all lovey dovey with him and he tells her to study, but then when Stiles realizes that she color codes in the same way he does (SHE COLOR CODES IN THE SAME WAY HE DOES! That's literally SO CUTE I cannot.), he immediately doesn't care about studying anymore because that makes him love her even more (the way he LOOKS at her I cannot, Dylan O'Brien seriously has the best freaking facial expressions. <3 <3).
Meanwhile, Lydia and Parrish actually kind of have chemistry? And I'm not sure how I feel about that, because I'm pretty sure Lydia is still underage (though, not for much longer, right?), but also, Parrish is a younger cop, so...I don't hate it. Come back to me on that when she's legal. I wouldn't be against it. (Though, again, Stydia is still my OTP, so...anything that happens would have to be temporary until I get my Stydia endgame. XD ;) <3)
Anyways I love how all of our little pack members make connections at around the same time and find different pieces of the puzzle. Right as Lydia was finding the bodies, Stiles was finding her code that matched Mouthless Creepo's stuff that he was typing on the computer, and Lydia's warning gave Scott, who was already at the hospital, JUST enough time to save Melissa and just BARELY save Liam, but he did! He did save them both!
So now we get to add Liam to our little pack family, and we get to deal with ALL of the repercussions that'll come with that, but it'll be worth it, because he's going to be a lovely addition and I am very excited for the Sciles parenting dynamics with Liam.
I said it already, but I'm going to say it again: this is easily in my top five Teen Wolf episodes so far. I feel like everything about it was perfect, and I have no complaints (okay, wait...almost, 'cause I didn't like Sean's acting in the very beginning, but that's not important in the grand scheme of the episode lol) whatsoever. Like, that was just SUCH a solid episode, and it was filled with Sciles moments, and filled with an OFFICIALLY CANONICAL SCIRA, and we got some cute Stalia, and now, we've got a new pack member (we EVEN got some cute Malira in the bleachers during the lacrosse tryouts!! <3).
Really, more than anything, the fact that these episodes are 45 minutes long, but it took me THREE HOURS to watch this one episode because of how long my reactions were and how often I kept going back and re-watching is a pretty good indicator of how much I liked this episode.
Like, I'm trying to think of what other ones have taken me that long to watch (post mid Season 2, because I didn't really start doing reactions until then), and the ones I'm thinking of are 3x6, 3x13, 3x18, and 3x22, which definitely makes sense, because Sciles and Season 3b. So...consider those plus 4x3 my top five episodes so far lol.
But honestly, in general, Season 4 is SOOO good. Like, I loved 3b, with everything I had. I loved Season 3 with everything I had, to be perfectly honest. But frankly, I feel like the show is just getting better, and I am LOVING Season 4 so far. I can't rank it above Season 3b yet, because I'm obviously only a few episodes in, but it's looking REALLY promising. I'm just soooo freaking invested in this season right now, and my heart is just so pleased, and I just...yeah I really loved that episode, and I really love this season.
Since, as I mentioned, watching that ONE EPISODE took me THREE HOURS, it is now way past my bedtime, and I should go to bed. XD
But! I promise, I will watch more tomorrow. And probably Saturday. And probably Sunday.
If I finish Season 4 this weekend, we REALLY have a problem...but honestly, I might. XD
ANYWAYS!!
Hmm...pick a gif, any gif.
How about many gifs? XD
