GUYS I THINK I FOUND THE INSPIRATION FOR CASLTE REDMONT! Don't know if someones already found this but here it is anyway:
Tumblr media
It's called Castle Caerlaverock and it is a TRIANGULAR SHAPED castle, with a MOAT, and is made of REDSTONE. That is literally the description of Castle Redmont. It is in Scotland but that doesn't matter, it's close to England.
I was doing some research on Scotland a few years back for school when I found this castle. I just remembered it a couple minutes ago.

Aaay Treskie's actually doing the fanart she said she was gonna do! Bless her heart. . Here's a lil Will Treaty from Ranger's Apprentice, because he's a fun character and I like the vibe. Also it wasn't until after I inked in the thing that I read in the books that the double knives in the scabbard are on each hip and not stacked like I thought. OH WELL . . . . #traditionalart #watercolor #pencilandink #pencilandpaper #sketches #drawings #catholicartist #rangersapprentice #rangersapprenticeseries #halt #willtreaty #johnflanagan #araluen #redmont #rangersapprenticefandom https://www.instagram.com/p/Cpn__PeLGhC/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

I need someone that has already read the new (for me it’s new cause I’m dutch) Royal Ranger book “Arazans Wolves” to tell me-
Will there be actual magic in this book?
Cause in the summery they refer to Arazan as a a “sorcerer” that controls an army of Wargals and Direwolfs
And even though I like the idea of the wargals returning I always liked the fact that the Rangers Apprentice series played with the idea somethings were magical but there was always a logical explanation for it!
So- if i order the book, should i be excited or preparing for the worst?

Ranger Gathering Day 11: Siege
Just the cleaned sketch this time because I didn't have the time for anything else
When the husband of the woman you were trying to siege comes back early to double-siege you. Must suck, couldn't be me.

So, homeless Halt huh?
What, right after leaving Clonmel and bedore meeting Crowley, or a fully new context au style.
The first option, yes!!!
I decided that 17 was FAR too young for TEY, so I kinda just added 3 extra years in between leaving Clonmel and meeting Crowley, making him 20 at the time of TEY. (Well, technically, he was 19 when he met Crowley and turned 20 like 2 weeks later, but that's being unnecessarily detailed lol)
I like to think that, because Halt was a prince, Pritchard could only teach him the skills in isolation, and not how to use them. Y'know, like learning how to pick a lock on some little play toy you out in your lap, and then having to actually do it on a real door. So, these 3 years were when Halt had to transition from aiming at a target to aiming at an actual animal. There were also things like how he knew logically how to set up the tent and then realized that actually doing it was just different enough to make him feel dumb.
This also, btw, puts Halt as a homeless, jobless, (illegal) immigrant who speaks the language at a 3rd grade level during the height of Morgarath's rule. So. He had 🌈fun!! ✨️
By the time he met Crowley he understood the language a lot better (3 years of actually living in the kingdom will certainly help with that) but he still kinda struggled a bit. I like to think that he can't pronounce Morgarath's name and always ends up calling him "Morgor", "Morgaah", or simply, "lighting man". Why? Because it's entertaining, that's why
The fic I'm writing takes place when he had JUST moved to Araluen, and wasn't quite so stone faced yet. In the fic he finds a group of other homeless people, mostly other immigrants, who let him stay by their fire that night and help him fix a couple things from his saddle bag. It also centers heavily around his relationship with his old horse, Declan, from before he got Abelard, and how that horse was his only reliable source of companionship

(Flanagan's) ✨️fatphobia in RA, heavily projected into Halt makes no sense ✨️
In the Middle Ages, not being skinny was a sign of prosperity, wealth and security. If someone's bones weren't showing or they weren't made up of only muscles, it meant they didn't have to fight to survive, they didn't know hunger or poverty and they didn't fight their way up the social ladder, they were just born into abundance.
If anyone, Halt, being of noble birth, should know this.
From the series: cultural and social idiocies in books styled to take place in the Middle Ages that annoy me. (The series is a very long one and I will share some of it here for sure because COME ON)

Thinking about my timeline of the Cralty fic, and completely overthrowing it, because it feels nonsensical and like a trr (solaris' version) ripoff
I just need to figure out how to get Halt in Clonmel to Crowley in Araluen and have them fall in love without making half the story non-cralt because they don't know eachother yet.

There are three authors I am so excited for 2025 book releases. They are Ocean Vuong, R F Kuang, and Evelyn Araluen.
Many of my favourite authors are unfortunately dead so I don't often get to experience this excitement (I hope to more in future, as I want to expand the range of literature I consume).
Their ages being 36, 28, and 29 respectively, it is incredible to see these younger writers paving the way for literature before our very eyes.
Ocean Vuong
On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous was so absolutely life changing. Although his poetry that I've read (Night Sky With Exit Wounds and Time Is A Mother) included hit or miss poetry for my personal taste, I have complete faith in his upcoming novel, The Emperor of Gladness, coming out in May.
R F Kuang
The only book of hers that I have read is Babel, which I completed only a month ago. It was absolutely jaw dropping. By far one of the best novels I have ever read. Only today I began reading The Poppy War and the first 60 pages have me hooked.
I'm really anticipating her new novel coming out August 2025, titled Katabasis. Katabasis meaning descent to the underworld. Kuang has expressed that this novel has been the most emotionally difficult to write which is crazy to me (Babel destroyed me).
Evelyn Araluen
The most underrated author on this list. She is an Australian Indigenous author. I was so captivated by her debut poetry collection, Dropbear. She has a new collection of poetry coming out in September is titled The Rot. I am so unbelievably excited.

You know, I think Duncan and Rosalind were an arranged/political marriage.
She's not mentioned at all until the Battle of Hackham Heath where it says that she and Duncan got married. The previous book, mostly from Halt and Crowley's POV, had little reason to mention her, but still.
It would make sense for it to be necessary politically for Duncan to marry
Oswald was old and ill.
The people had turned against Duncan, thanks to Morgarath and Tiller, thinking that he was raiding and killing his own people.
Baron Morgarath was in the middle of a rebellion.
The scene at the tournament at Gorlan was not very conclusive for Duncan.
All this is making the monarchy look weak and unstable.
Also, Duncan was the only heir. He had no siblings or cousins who could take over if something happened to him. If he died - and as king, he would definitely be at risk in the war they all knew was coming - then the leadership of Araluen would spiral into chaos.
So Duncan needed to marry, so there is one more member of the very small royal family who could rule or at least rally the people and issue orders in his stead. And more importantly, he needed to marry, because he needed heirs.
So the scenario I'm picturing is any eligible young noblewomen, presumably daughters and sisters and so on of barons because that seems to be the only nobility in Araluen, being asked if any of them are interested in being courted by the king, and a bunch of them say yes, because who wouldn't want to be queen? And then Duncan meets whoever's interested, and luckily for him and Rosalind, they instantly hit it off.
