Introduction to Yasodhara, Wife of the Buddha.
Tumblr media
Yasodhara was the wife of Siddhartha Gautama (The Buddha). She became a Buddhist nun and was considered as an arhat (Buddhist saint)
The meaning of her name is "Bearer of glory". She was also popularly known as Bhaddakaccana, Rahulamata, etc…
Yasodhara has lived with the Buddha in his past lives, being his wife in all of them. In their past lives, she helps the Buddha and always stays devoted to him. In many of her lives, she rarely did bad acts/bad karma, making her one of the most holiest women in Buddhism.
She is an arhat associated with beauty, insight, womanhood, glory & devotion. Called "foremost in great insight"
She, in some unknown stories, was associated with Magic
Her (slightly summarized) life story 👇
Tumblr media
Yasodhara was the daughter of King Suppabuddh & Queen Amita, She was born on the same day as prince Siddhartha. She was said to be a very beautiful Princess who was devoted, pleasant & sympathetic.
When Siddhartha was 16, his father wanted him to marry a benevolent & unjealous girl. Later, at a marriage event, Yasodhara was seen as the right person of that, After a series of events, Siddhartha & Yashodhara got married.
Yasodhara gave birth to a son named Rahula when she was 26. 7 days after, Siddhartha left the palace to seek answers, leaving Yasodhara devastated. When he was away, She imitated her husband's lifestyle by wearing simpler clothes, eating only 1 meal a day, & refusing offers of marriage proposals.
After a few years, Buddha later went back to his wife, where she rushed to him and clung to his feet. Eyes full of tears, missing his presence, now Fulfilled to see him again.
Yasodara recited the 'Naraseeha Gatha' to her son Rahula before sending him to join the Buddha. Rahula was joyful in his father’s presence & went with him to the temple. Rahula later became a monk & attained Arhantship. Yasodara's life is marked by sorrow & tears, but she has never shown anger.
Yasodhara joined the order of Monks, became an arhat, & established the first nun Order with 500 women. She dedicated her life to spreading Buddha's teachings & focusing on good karma.
Other stories of Yasodhara:
1. Yasodhara & the shakyan nuns.
Tumblr media
When Rahula became a monk, Yasodara asked for permission from King Suddhodana to become ordained. The king advised her to wait for the right time. After his passing, Mother Gotami obtained the higher ordination & started the ‘order of nuns’ in the Buddha’s dispensation. Yasodara eventually renounced her possessions and became a nun, along with a thousand Shākyan ladies, despite the extreme protests from her people.
She, & other Shakyan princesses who became nuns, received immense offerings and attention from devotees. Many royal figures and noble women became nuns under Yasodhara’s guidance.
2. Yasodhara’s Glory.
Tumblr media
(this could possibly be a folk-story)
In order to prove her powers, Yasodara, in her spiritual form, performed numerous miracles, In the miracles, she’s said to have a voice that could be heard by the gods & brahmas who were dwelling in tens of thousands of universes. She transformed into different types of forms, into different elements, the sun, moon, mount Meru, & the god Indra.
She created a gigantic elephant and then plucked a divine tree from the realm Svarga (heaven), offering it to the Buddha like an umbrella.
She then attained nirvana, & was praised for her unwavering devotion and merits accumulated over countless lifetimes, a stupa was built to honor her legacy.
3. The princess’s love magic.
Tumblr media
In one unknown story, when the buddha came back, Yasodhara tries to win back the Buddha by offering him a cake with medicinal herbs to change his feelings, she preformed love magic on the food and had her son offer it to the Buddha. However, the Buddha remain unaffected and tells a story from a past life where Yasodhara, as a seductive courtesan, had led him astray with a similar cake.
4. Yasodhara’s innocence.
Tumblr media
In the Tsa pao tsang king, it states that As a result of Yasodhara’s prolonged pregnancy, she was suspected of adultery by her father-in-law and the Sakyas. They dug a ditch filled with flaming wood and threw Yasodhara into it. She called upon the Buddha, the flaming ditch was instantaneously transformed into a pool of pure water, in the middle of which Yasodhara with Rahula in her arms was sitting on a lotus flower.
The Sakyas were convinced of her innocence and Rahula became the favorite of his grandfather.
5. Kama
Tumblr media
Prince Siddhartha would have practiced his cult of sexual magic (possibly tantric sex?) with Yasodhara. Both of them would often engage in sexual activities before they were ready to bring a baby.
There is also one story of them having intercourse on a palace roof. They were so into the act that they actually fell off the roof & didn't notice. They somehow managed to fall into a bed of lotus flowers which saved them from any injuries as a result of the fall.
Tumblr media
"Sri Yasodara Maha Seya" is a peaceful temple/stupa in Sri Lanka that honors her. Devotees seek the protection & blessings of her which help them overcome obstacles in life.
Nuns are mostly the ones who take refuge in her, meditating in front of her stupa or making offerings. There are also energetic festivals in honor of her, with dancing, music & chanting. Poojas are also in honor of her.

Buddhism 201: Theravada and Mahayana
Buddhism in Bhutan The difference between Theravada and Mahayana is the difference between Self and Other, if there is one. If you’re a ‘non-dualist,’ then there is none, though that defies common-sense logic, which seems to show a diversity of disparate objects. So, that is the point of the new religion, I suppose, to unify existence, since you gotta’ have something to believe in for a religion…

Types of Liberation (vimutti) in Theravada Buddhism - 01
According to Buddhist teaching, one who cultivates the Noble Eight-fold Path as described by the Buddha with diligence, will sooner or later attain full enlightenment or Nibbana by passing through four progressive stages of spiritual development, namely:
Stream Enterer (sotapanna)
Once Returner (sakadagami)
Non Returner (anagami)
Arahant (arahat)
Arahant is the final stage of the enlightenment process and one who has attained this stage by eradicating all the mental defilements that caused suffering and re-birth is awakened, fully enlightened and liberated enjoying the bliss of Nibbana. Gautama Buddha has described an Arahant as:
"One whose taints are destroyed, who has lived the spiritual life, done what had to be done, laid down the burden, reached his own goal, utterly destroyed the fetters of existence, one completely liberated through final knowledge"
According to the Theravada Buddhist teaching, there are three levels of individuals who are fully enlightened and liberated.
Samma Sambuddha
Pacceka Buddha (silent or solitary Buddha)
Arahant
Whether one is enlightened as a Samma Sambuddha, Pacceka Buddha or an Ararant, their liberation is identical with no further re-birth, although there may be certain differences in the route that they follow towards liberation.
In the Sambuddha sutta of the Samyutta Nikaya (collection of the Buddha's connected discourses), the Buddha has stated that there is no difference between the liberation of a Samma Sambuddha and an Arahant except the fact that a Samma Sambuddha discovers the path of liberation and an Arahant as a disciple follows that path and attains liberation afterwards.
"A Realised One, a perfected one, a fully awakened Buddha gives rise to the un-arisen path, gives birth to the unborn path, and explains the unexplained path. They know the path, understand the path, and are experts in the path. And now the disciples live following the path; they acquire it later"

五百羅漢公園 散策 石彫刻
念佛宗総本山 佛教之王堂 仏教美術
兵庫県加東市 The Five Hundred Arahats Park
The Buddhist Art of Nenbutsushu
The Five Hundred Arahats Park The Buddhist Art of Nenbutsushu
Life-sized stone statues of 500 arhats, disciples of Lord Buddha, scattered in the vast site named the Five Hundred Arhats Park, were carved by Mr. She Guo Ping, a living national treasure of China.

As Dorian's gentle hand came to rest on the nape of her neck, her long lashes lowered, and her brown eyes closed. The tension she felt was slowly melting away as her mind slipped into a deeper state of relaxation.
Safety was only one of the few things Dorian meant to her. He was comfort; he was stability. The warlord was not only a pillar of strength but also one of the last links to her memories of Bijou. He was one of the few remaining individuals who shared recollections of the idyllic tropical beaches and her family, who knew her values. Dorian was possibly the only person who wasn't a stranger to her in the ever-changing world, and in the chaotic mess, if someone was going to kill her, she prayed it would be by the hands of someone she knew.
"I don't recall expressing a desire for you to issue me orders on my list of requests, Your Majesty," she quipped, her closed eyes squinting slightly with mirth.
There was a significant amount of work to be done during the winter season. On top of resupplying and reinvigorating the troops, she needed to conduct thorough research on Arahat's Lady Hati and seek out allies for Dorian's upcoming conquest. All tasks required to be completed before the last snow melted so she could present her findings and recommendations. "I will rest when the time is right. Until then, what the King dreams, the Hand will build."
No, Dorian had barely spoken to her then.
He'd been a teenager in many ways - easy to provoke into feats of foolish bravado, prone to getting into fights, quick to anger - but also very much himself. Shy, if we're being truthful; reserved to the point of barely being able to speak a single sentence. That had changed with time and experience, but every word was hard won. At the time, all he'd done was watch, listen and occasionally wrestle her cousins into the ground. "..." He glanced down at her, as her head tipped against him, droplets shining like diamonds in her hair, and wondered what he symbolised for her. Safety, he imagined. Well, it wasn't the worst role. What she was saying was she needed refuge, and rest, and to be allowed to return to someone closer to the girl she was. "Nothing much can be done during winter," he said, quietly. Raised a hand, carefully placing it in the nap of her neck. Thumb giving it a little stroke. "If I am to recuperate, I demand you do the same." It wasn't entirely what was going to happen, of course. It was a gentle little fantasy. They still had a city in much unrest, and a fair deal of politics that needed to happen to settle it. But snow and cold had a way of settling unrest, as long as there was enough food. And Dorian had every intention of letting her curl up in bed for days on end, if she needed to - he could handle the bickering and calls for justice that would ensue.

History, origin and proof of the Naga part 4
With the journey of studying more about these Nagas as we were 1st focussing on Buddhism, we can also understand a few mainly important places in Sri Lanka,
In The book Deepavamsa we found out the buddha visited the island of Ceylon and preached damma settling the dispute between Chulodra Naga and Mahaudara Naga, that with proof was mentioned before another interesting fact is that in the same book, it refers to a place as Nagadeepa
This location is found as an island in the north of Sri Lanka and is still an existing site this place is also said to be the place where the Buddha solved the dispute mentioned above,
The importance is that its location dates to the clans of the Nagas and still exists
Further doing research on the place I was also able to understand that another Nagadepa existed in the Mahiyanganaya central part of the country and also poses historic archaeological sittings
the chief monk of both these temples claims that Cobras visit this temple more often
Tumblr media
Nagadeepa temple in Jaffna peninsula
Tumblr media
Nagadeepa in Mahiynganaya
This location truly dates back more than the Jaffna nagadeepa and also claims to be the real Nagadeepaya
youtube
This vedio is in Sinhala but it contains both information on both Nagadeepas
Further another important location is the Kalaniya temple in here we can also encounter few important information regarding the Nagas
Kalayniya relates in many ways the 1st is that as mentioned in Deepavamasa it is the place where a king named MANIYAKKITHA a naga king invited the budhha to preach a sermon further
Buddhists believe the temple to have been hallowed during the third and final visit of the Buddha to Sri Lanka, eight years after gaining enlightenment.[3] Its history would thus go back to before 500 BCE. The Mahawansa records that the original Stupa at Kelaniya enshrined a gem-studded throne on which the Buddha sat and preached. The temple flourished during the Kotte era but much of its land was confiscated during the Portuguese empire. Under the Dutch empire, however, there were new gifts of land and under the patronage of King Kirthi Sri Rajasingha the temple was rebuilt. It was refurbished in the first half of the 20th century with the help of Helena Wijewardene.
The Kelaniya Stupa enshrined a gem-studded throne on which the Buddha sat and preached. Buddha's second visit to Nagadeepaya, Sri Lanka was in the fifth year of enlightenment to settle a dispute between two Naga Kings, Chulodara and Mahodara over the possession of a Gem Studded throne. After having listened to the Dhamma sermons by Buddha the Naga kings paid homage to Buddha with overwhelming faith and the throne was offered to Buddha by two Naga kings.
The Naga King Maniakkika- Ruler of Kelaniya who also listened to Buddha's Dharma sermons pleaded for a souvenir to worship. So the throne was gifted to him by Buddha. King Maniakkika in turn constructed a Cetiya (Stupa) covering the Gem studded Throne in Kelaniya for thousands of devotees to worship and invited Buddha to visit the holy site.
Buddha together with 500 Arahats (Supremely enlightened beings) visited Kelaniya and preached Dhamma, on Wesak Poya Day, after eighth year of enlightenment as Buddha (in 580 BC which is approx. 2600 years back). It was Buddha's third and final visit to Sri Lanka.
The temple is also famous for its image of the reclining Gautama Buddha and paintings by the native artist Solias Mendis which depict important events in the life of the Buddha, in the history of Buddhism in Sri Lanka, also incidents from the Jataka tales. It is the venue for the Duruthu Maha Perahera procession each January.[4] An 5.5 m (18 ft) stone statue of the Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara has been erected at the temple. wiki

The Quest for Buddhism (43)
Early Buddhism and the disciples
Ten Principal Disciples No. 3: Mahakasyapa who was the Foremost in Buddhist Practice.
Mahakasyapa was one of the principal disciples of the Buddha. He is regarded in Buddhism as an enlightened disciple. He was praised by the Buddha as foremost in ascetic practices and a foremost forest dweller.
There are many legends and theories about his life, including his upbringing. Regardless, it is clear that Mahakasyapa assumed leadership of the monastic community following the parinirvana (death) of the Buddha.
Mahakasyapa presided over the First Buddhist Council. In Buddhist texts, he assumed many identities, that of a renunciant saint, a lawgiver, an anti-establishment figure, but also a "guarantor of future justice" in the time of Maitreya, the future Buddha—he has been described as "both the anchorite and the friend of mankind, even of the outcast".
Mahakasyapa was born in a wealthy brahmin family in a village called Mahātittha, in the kingdom of Magadha, present-day India. He was born under the Pippala tree (Pippala = Bodhi tree), hence his childhood name Pippali. His body had some of the 32 characteristics of a Great Man (Ref), which in Buddhism are seen as the basis for early representations of the Buddha.
From his youth onward, he was inclined toward living a spiritual life rather than marrying, but his father who was fearing the end of the family line, wanted him to wed. In canonical Buddhist texts in several traditions, Mahakasyapa was entered an arranged marriage with a woman named Bhadra-Kapilani. Both of them aspired to lead a celibate life, however, and they decided not to consummate their marriage.
Shortly after that, Mahakasyapa met the Buddha, was struck with devotion when seeing him, and asked to be ordained under him. Mahakasyapa took upon him the thirteen ascetic practices (including living in the wilderness, living only from alms and wearing rag-robes)and became an enlightened disciple (arahat) in nine days. He excelled in supernatural powers (rddhi: Ref2) and was equal to the Buddha in meditative absorption (Skt: dyāna).
In many post-canonical texts, Mahakasyapa decided at the end of his life to enter a state of meditation and suspended animation, which was believed to cause his physical remains to stay intact in a cave under a mountain called Kukkuṭapāda, until the coming of Maitreya Buddha. This story has led to several cults and practices, and affected some Buddhist countries up until early modern times.
