Behold, an Ongoing Project! 📯
I've been wanting to compile this for a while, instead of frantically scrambling for references every time I sit down to write — I thought it would be fun to share! I'm mostly tackling this from the perspective of a fanfic author, and also as someone who's very into viking era-through-renaissance men's fashion and armor.
I think it's really fun to look at the decisions that were made strategically (to maintain actor mobility, for example), because they looked cool (Faramir's pointless hinged piece on his helmet), or because they were actually period-accurate (gambesons under chainmail, or worn as armor by themselves!). I'm also taking it as a chance to point out what these garments say about their owners!
I say this in the document itself, but there's no need to credit me if you reference/use the doc for your own writing ^_^ this is some of my favorite stuff to discuss, so just getting to share it is cool enough to me.
I'm purely focusing on human characters to start, because of the more solid real-world parallels, but I'm happy to add on to this if there are other characters you'd like to see!!
(@potatoflower7 + @rivers-for-me, tagging you both bc you interacted w/ the posts I made when I was just starting this!)

So let’s talk for a moment about something I was discussing yesterday with my sister only to wake up today and be like “it’s so fuckin obvious why did we miss it?”, but also I think people tend to forget about it, idk.
So we were talking how Faramir is not giving 36 year old man vibes. He just seems younger, more emotionally invested in a way a 20 something year old would be. And then we checked how old are Éomer and Éowyn, because Éomer is in our mind somewhere near Faramir’s age and Éowyn is slightly younger.
So Éomer is 28 and Éowyn is 24.
And Faramir is 36.
And just to throw it in there, because it is important I swear, Boromir is 41 and Théodred is also 41.
And we also only then started talking how Boromir also seems younger than 41, like not much, but somewhere around 35?? Idk, he just has this adult spice to himself but with a hint of lost youthfulness.
And I only now remembered that those Gondor bitches are of the blood of Numenor. Not like Aragorn type of where we all know it’s crazy difference, but they still are.
So it’s now absolutely right to have Faramie vibe with Éomer and Éowyn and for those three to seem like being similar age.
And this also brings me to topic of Boromir/Théodred, one of my fav ships from lotr. Because they are technically the same age, but the line of Húrin is aging slightly differently. So I would risk saying here that Boromir would be slightly more, idk, childish? Less experienced emotionally and less mature? But still a grown man, if we are talking about their potential meeting in their twenties for example.
Idk, the concept of age with lotr is weird to discuss, because shit feels weird sometimes but then u remember none of those characters age as a normal human except the Rohirrim.
So i am deciding to just go with the vibe the character is giving me when it comes to writing.
And just to throw our 87 year old king here, he is in my mind somewhere around 38 to 41 if converted to normal person.
It’s an open discussion I would love to hear from someone who knows tolkien shit better than I do, because those are just some chaotic thoughts

I’m (maybe?) almost done with a Théodred story I’ve been working on for a long time and, in looking back over some of my notes about his canon life, I couldn’t help clocking the many similarities between his experiences and those of LOTR’s other first son of a kingdom of men, Boromir. It’s not super relevant to my story, but I ended up with this running list and I’m just sticking it here because why not. None of this is groundbreaking stuff (and there are probably more) but so far I have that Théodred and Boromir both:
1. Were heirs to the leadership of their respective realms and held their land’s senior military positions (Second Marshal for Théodred—there being no First Marshal at the time—and Captain of the White Tower for Boromir).
2. Lost their mothers early (Théodred at birth and Boromir at age 10) and grew up in households run entirely by powerful fathers who never remarried.
3. Ended up taking on dangerous challenges at least in part because those fathers were both having their reason and good judgment manipulated by opponents (Théoden through the treachery of Gríma/Saruman and Denethor by the selective truths shown to him by Sauron in the palantír).
4. Got killed in a battle where their opponents were targeting them to the exclusion of others around them (Saruman’s forces at the Isen were told to kill Théodred at all costs even while “disregarding” others, and the orcs at Parth Galen fire their arrows “always at Boromir” while leaving Merry and Pip untouched).
5. Were trying to summon aid at the time they were struck down (Théodred is shouting “To me, Eorlingas!” to summon reinforcements when he’s fatally wounded. Boromir blows his great horn to alert the rest of the fellowship before he’s brought down).
6. Took massive injuries but lived long enough afterward to pass on last words in which they invoke the names of the men who will come to replace them as leaders and express the hope that those next leaders will achieve victory (Elfhelm and Grimbold believe Théodred is dead before they discover he’s still breathing just enough to say, “Let me lie here to keep the fords til Éomer comes.” Boromir, as we all know, lays there with those arrows in his chest long enough to be found by Aragorn, at which point he says, “Farewell, Aragorn. Go to Minas Tirith and save my people.”).
7. Died within hours of each other (Théodred on the night on February 25 and Boromir around midday on the 26) at the same age of 41 because, oh yeah, they were also born within months of each other.
8. Didn’t get a burial/funeral in keeping with their status and the traditions of their people because they died in awful circumstances far from home (Théodred dies and is buried by Elfhelm and Grimbold’s companies at the fords rather than in the barrows outside of Edoras with his ancestors. Boromir is sent over the falls by the three hunters instead of laying in Rath Dínen with the other kings and stewards of Gondor).
9. Mentored and protected little brother-type figures (Faramir as Boromir’s actual little brother and Éomer as Théodred’s cousin/adopted little bro) who would go on to achieve what they were unable to do themselves while alive.
10. Died unmarried and childless despite being extremely marriageable, in the primes of their lives and presumably expected to produce another heir. (There’s an explanation given for Boromir—he’s not into women and prefers fighting and arms—though there is none for Théodred.) (Like many other people, I have my own personal HC for Théodred’s romantic life, but that’s for another day.)
I’m not sure what to make of all that, but I find it interesting. We hear so often about contrasts between Gondor and Rohan—the different histories and heritages, the personality of cold, hard Denethor against kindly, grandfatherly Théoden, the magisterial stone and marble of Minas Tirith versus the rustic wood and thatch of Edoras, Gondor’s vast libraries and the Rohirrim’s oral traditions—but they’re so deeply linked as kingdoms and as individuals. By fate and by choice, they’re inextricably tied together, and I love the amount of detail that went into creating and including the subtle parallels between the first sons of each land as just one more way to see those ties play out.

Dead Faces In The Water, Dead Faces Everywhere: Tracking the Rising Through the Rest of the Cast.
This is a Lord of the Rings zombie apocalypse story set in a modernized (but still magical) version of Middle-earth. {You can read it on AO3 here.} The main cast (Legolas, Gimli, Arwen, Aragorn, Boromir, and Glorfindel) are all appropriately tagged, but what about characters whose roles or appearances are too fleeting to justify a character tag?
Or what if you don’t really want to read the whole story, but you’d love a peek at what’s happening in the Shire, or Rohan, or even Mordor?
Here is the full list of tertiary characters, in alphabetical order, linked to the chapter(s) in which they appear:
Bilbo Baggins
Celebrían
Dáin
Dori
Elrond [x] [x] [x] [x] [x] [x] [x]
Éomer
Éowyn
Erestor [x] [x] [x]
Faramir
Frodo Baggins [x] [x]
Gilraen
Glóin [x] [x] [x]
Gollum
Gríma Wormtongue
Khamûl
Maglor
Samwise Gamgee [x]
Théodred
Thranduil
Witch King
Here are the locations that we only visit once or twice, all linked to their respective chapter(s).
Erebor
Gondor [x]
Mirkwood [x]
Mordor
Rohan
The Shire
(Links will be added when the corresponding chapters are posted.)
More characters and additional appearance links will be added to this list only when the chapter(s) in which said appearances take place are firmly drafted so as to prevent the need for removing anyone from this list due to plot changes during the writing process; thus, once an appearance is listed here, even if it is not linked yet, it is guaranteed rather than speculative. That does not mean that the appearances listed above are the only characters, or the only times that said characters will be seen; I expect several others to be added as the story continues to be written. If there are particular characters/places you’re interested in seeing in this world, let me know! I’ll probably be intrigued and have to drop in on them for at least a short visit.
Your continued interest in this terrible idea is very much appreciated, as it is precisely that interest that fuels my own in continuing to write it. Thank you.

Clever Fox
read it on the AO3 at https://ift.tt/ruo42Xa
by Theavengershavetakenovermylife
A tenth walker fanfic, but with a twist I have not seen.
Our character falls into middle earth rather violently. Taken first to Rohan, she is nurtured back to health before the events of the fellowship. Adina is an ex-FBI trained now loner after her stalker pushes her to her death - her fate. Her blood flows with that of the enemy, and her soul is tied to the rings fate. Will she overcome the ancestry she discovers much down the line? Will she save those she loves?
An Eomer x OFC x maybe Legolas fic, I haven't decided.

Thinking about the ask re: Grima and his Thieving Ways and went and found my bits of him being a Tiny Hoarding Dragon:
Gríma returns the stool to its correct spot by Théoden’s chair. On the low table, beside Éowyn’s embroidery, is a bowl of uneaten soup, an empty cup and a broach. Taking up the trinket, Gríma admires it in the low light of embers. Clearly dwarven craftsmanship and of some great age. He glances to Théoden, the door, the far corner where apparently lingers Théodred’s ghost, then pockets it.
o
Nodding to the open trunk Boromir asks what else is to be found. Secrets to spellcraft? Witches keep books on that sort of thing, he’s heard. Ingredients for secret potions?
‘No, though I wouldn’t have been surprised. There are just bits and pieces that have gone missing over the last year. Light fingers. He was always a bit like that, though.’ A flashed smile. ‘I asked him about it once.’
‘How did that go? He never struck me as a man who does direct questions.’
Éomer lets out a sharp laugh. ‘Gods no. Oh no. You have to circle around the point for ten minutes. What I got, in the end, was something about him liking objects because they won’t leave you.’
Boromir says an: ‘I see,’ then no more for there isn’t much else to add.
‘He never sold anything,’ Éomer muses, more to himself than Boromir. ‘He just kept it and organized it. According to value, I see. But still, he just kept them. My uncle’s sword was found in here, wrapped in a brocade cloak. What would you call that? A reverent theft?’
o
Taking out the slim box Éomer hands it over. Gríma accepts it, confused, then looks at it. The familiar design, the slight sheen of wood caught in firelight. His mother’s backgammon board.
‘Unless it’s more appropriate for your brother to have it,’ Éomer offers.
‘No,’ Gríma snaps, reflexively hugging it to his chest. ‘It’s mine.’
‘I thought someone might walk off with it so I, um.’
‘Walked off with it?’
‘For a time.’
‘I thank you, my lord.’
‘Right, well, it’s a family thing. Those are important.’
‘Sometimes.’
Éomer nods. That is true, it does depend on the situation. ‘Did your mother give it you for a special occasion?’
‘When I left home. Brynja and I were seventeen. We went south, also east, then back north again, for a time. Our mother said we would need something to do of an evening. And we could sell it, if things became desperate.’
‘I’m glad it never came to that.’
A smile slithers across Gríma’s face. ‘Oh no, my lord, we found other solutions to such troubles, whenever they arose.’
With subtle amusement, Éomer says that the less he knows the better. He doesn’t want to be party to Gríma’s legally questionable decisions.
‘Their legality was never questionable, my lord.'
‘You are aware that sentence can be taken several ways, right?'
‘I only ever seek to make myself useful and to diligently serve those for whom I work. And, as we all know, a man’s hard labour is always justly rewarded.’
o
Gríma loiters by the entrance until all have passed inside before he reaches over Baldor’s body and takes up the ancient signet ring of the House of Eorl. The bones of the never-to-be-king give it up without resistance. He also plucks up a necklace that is tangled around the neck. Its pendant is a stylized sun in the pattern of the old, nomadic tribes the Éotheod once were. Gríma slips both items into a saddle bag before he follows the Grey Company into the darkness of the Paths of the Dead.
o
Legolas visits as afternoon fades into evening. Gríma is reading a book he pilfered from someone’s bag figuring, as they were most probably dying, they wouldn’t miss it.
o
Gríma shoves the volume behind his back, tucking it into his belt where it can be hidden by his cloak. Denethor—well, Aragorn now—has many books. Neither will miss one or two. Three or four.
Oh Grima you weird little freak of a man.

178. Or, if you count Father Christmas and the Polar Bear, 180.
I really, really wanted to make it to 201, but, alas.
It's been too many years since I read the Silmarillion. And I have to admit, elvish names are kind of hard, especially if the characters never really drew me in that much. (I loved reading it, loved the atmosphere, the stories. Most of the characters though - not that interested in them especially.
Other than that:
It took me a shamefully long time to remember Gil-galad. I'm sorry, Mark Ferguson. All those long years at Ring*Con...
What I am proud of remembering are the characters from the smaller works. Chrysophylax, the dragon from Farmer Giles of Ham, especially.
And Fang, Farmer Maggot's dog. :D
Generally speaking, if I remembered a name, remembering how to spell it was easy in most cases.
I'll put the list of names under a read more, if anyone is interested in it.

Bonus internet points will be awarded to anyone who actually tries this exercise before voting.
Assume you need to get the spelling at least somewhat close, and if a character has multiple names, only one counts. Also, if a character doesn't have a canonical name, I'm sorry, but "that guy's wife" doesn't count.
For reference, if you can name the 9 members of the Fellowship, the eponymous Hobbit and his 13 dwarf buddies, 3 prominent women, and the guy who runs the Rivendell B&B, that's 27 characters right there. And you probably also know the name of a dragon.
For further reference, Tolkien Gateway has 637 (!!) pages dedicated to Third Age characters. (Don't click that link until you've voted, of course)
Edit: Your humble pollmaker gave this a try, and got as far as 73 before deciding she was too tired to keep trying to remember dwarf and Silm names. If you also want to share (and don't mind people being incredulous at your having forgot ____), pastebin allows you to paste text and share it for free. :)

So, I’ve been thinking about Middle-earth language headcanons, and I’ve talked about some of them before, and would have to double-check some things, but ... off the top of my head:
Denethor: learns Westron and Sindarin in early childhood, as is normal in Minas Tirith. He learns Quenya and the language of the Mark later, as well as becoming semi-fluent in various other languages he can dig up traces of in the archives. He’s always been interested in knowing everything within his reach, so he’ll absorb pretty much anything he has access to. But he privately prefers Sindarin as a heritage thing.
Aragorn: speaks a ton of things through a mixture of his Rivendell education and travels abroad, but likes Quenya best.
Théoden: learns Westron and Sindarin in his early childhood in Gondor, and the language of the Mark after his family goes to Rohan; he prefers Markish and Westron to Sindarin, and uses them much more often than Sindarin after his father dies, but is perfectly comfortable with Sindarin when he does feel moved to use it.
Théodwyn: learns Markish, Westron, and Sindarin in childhood, though she rarely has occasion for using the last in adulthood and it becomes rusty. She prefers Markish, the language of her home, and it’s important to her that Éomer and Éowyn hear it from the cradle.
Théodred: learns Markish, Westron, and some Sindarin in childhood. He uses Sindarin primarily with his grandmother and prefers Westron for usefulness’s sake.
Boromir: learns Westron and Sindarin in early childhood and can speak them equally well. He also knows a little Quenya and some Markish. Like Théodred, he is less concerned with aesthetics than practical use, which typically means Sindarin in and around Minas Tirith, and Westron most everywhere else.
Faramir: learns Westron and Sindarin in early childhood and is equally fluent in both, though he prefers Sindarin. He has learned quite a bit of Quenya and loves it (~Laurelindórenan!), and has also picked up some Markish; he eagerly learns more Markish from Éowyn and attends closely to the forms of language used by Legolas’s colony of Elves in Ithilien. All the words!
Éomer: learns Markish and Westron in early childhood, in addition to some Sindarin. The latter has mostly fallen out of use in Rohan by his youth, and he has so much else going on that he forgets much of what he knew, though he retains a little and picks up some from Lothíriel. He probably picks up even more through fighting in so many wars alongside Gondorians. But he always prefers Markish and Westron.
Éowyn: similarly to Éomer, she heard Markish and Westron +some Sindarin as a child, but had little cause for using or remembering much Sindarin as she grew to adulthood and became preoccupied with much more pressing issues. She’s fine with both Markish and Westron, and goes to some pains to fully learn Sindarin after her marriage, not liking the idea of not being able to understand what people around her are saying, and feeling like she’s honouring Morwen in doing so.
Lothíriel: learns Westron and Sindarin in early childhood, as is also normal in Dol Amroth, and has a very strong preference for Sindarin, which she continues to use in virtually all her correspondence, except with Éowyn. They’re each making lives in the other’s culture and they try to help each other from a distance. Lothíriel’s written and spoken Markish is hilariously terrible, though eventually she can understand it fairly well. She also knows a little Quenya.

"They deserve one another more than anything," Éomer replied, a sigh leaving him with a more sad look entering his eyes. It was still hard to deal with the losses of both Boromir and Théodred, the two heirs and elder sons of their families. How Éomer wished his cousin was still alive, to joke and converse with, and to take up the rule he had prepared for his whole life. "They are a perfect match."
He felt the sun warming his arms and face as the blazing sphere passed the mountain tops and he welcomed it gladly, a brief reminder of home as the princess considered her own. However, he was taken aback by Lothíriel's admission that going home would mean not seeing him again, so it was bitter. A new kind of warmth he felt, but near the back of his neck and ears, that he promptly forced away.
"Oh, Lothíriel. . . Our families are joined now, with your cousin, and my sister. This will certainly not be my last time in Gondor, and I urge you to visit the Mark. Perhaps Faramir may bring you for a visit, and your father, mighty warrior that he is, is most welcome as well. I shall miss you when I--"
Then the inevitable intrusion occurred, with one of his éored swiftly walking up behind them. "I apologize, my lord, but Aragorn King requests your presence."
Éomer's eyes rolled in annoyance and he grunted out, "Yes, a moment." He looked back at Lothíriel and was then at a loss of words. Of all the times! He was visibly angered now, but tried to be softer with her. "Thank you for this conversation. Until we meet again," he said gently reaching for her hand and then holding it for a moment in between both of his own. Then he let go and walked loudly away from the garden, the rider following him.
Lothiriel couldn't help but smile at the mention of her cousin. "Faramir?" She asked "Well, he deserves some happiness. Denethor was hardly kind to him and after losing Boromir.. it hasn't been easy on him. Eowyn will be good for him I am sure" Lothiriel admitted. Of course in public space they would have to keep using titles and formalities, even though there were times where she did not wish to.
Her eyes didn't remove from Eomer, not even to marvel at the sun which rose above high mountains. Home. Dol Amroth.. she loved her home wholeheartedly although now the war was over, Lothiriel couldn't help but feel as if she wanted to see more than the shores and the castle which she called hers. "Home.." The brunette repeated, "It feels bittersweet.. knowing I can return home without dread and yet bitter because I wouldn't see you again" truth be told it saddened her.
Lothiriel enjoyed his company more than most, he listened to her and she felt heard by Eomer, compared to everyone else who seemed to view her as the youngest of the royals within Dol Amroth. Finally her gaze left his features and returned to the sun, it hardly felt fair in knowing that he would return to Rohan after just meeting him, yet she supposed it was life, and their roles meant that they would eventually part ways. To be able to stand and talk to Eomer without interruption was unusual, by now one of the Knights would whisk him away or oftentimes Lothiriel would be called away to tend to her own duties, to meet new faces (more so lords).
