An Arachtober favorite for the past couple years: Ms Hamataliwa helia and her newly-hatched and molted Miniature 🥹
I spotted the mum a week or two beforehand while wandering in hurricane weather (as one does?), and kept coming back in hopes of seeing babies. Was not disappointed 💚

Bug of the Day - Arachtober!
Found this harvestman (probably genus Leiobunum) trolling for prey on a mostly-chewed leaf last July.

Have been on a little Tumblr-Hiatus, but I am back with an exciting sighting!
Nuctenea umbratica
Tumblr media Tumblr media
On a walk with the pup yesterday, I noticed this gentleman, resting on the wall of a building complex not far from my own residence.
Since this species of spider likes to hide during the day and is, thus, primarily nocturnal, I got super excited to finally get a decent picture of this species!
These spiders are also known to construct webs up to 70cm (27.5 inches) in diameter!
What a georgeous species 🌿🙌🏻
Picture of a male Nuctenea umbratica (Araneidae) taken on October 24, 2024 in Olten, Switzerland.

October Arachtober 8th is for learning to draw spiders!
Why? 10 & 8 are all you need!
1️⃣Draw an 8. This is the spider's body: head+abdomen 2️Draw 10 limbs (8 legs (longer) + 2 pedipalps ("arms"; shorter, near the front) ALL attached to the head!
Tumblr media
Ta-da! You've now drawn a more accurate spider than many Spider-Man logos! (yes, really.)
For some extras, consider adding:
👁️Spiders have 8 eyes (or fewer, in intervals of 2: 6,4,2,0). These are NOT compound eyes, but multiple camera-type (like our own) eyes. Size, shape, position & # vary between families.
🦷Spiders have 2 fangs, w/ one bulky segment+one sharp segment, like 9
🕸️You can also add 2 spinnerets to the abdomen; they look like short narrow limbs. This is where the silk comes from! They don't spit/eject the silk, instead touching the spinnerets to something, then unspooling silk by moving away. Think a tape dispenser roll or something.

Horseshoe crab, an arthropod who was just recently promoted to being a chelicerate (closer to spiders than actual crabs!)
I was listening to miyazaki music while painting this so just imagine “carousel of life” playing in the background
