aawww thanks for remembering my playlist making era anon :') unfortunately since every custom playlist site shat the bed around covid (RIP 8tracks) a lot of my recent playlists have been sequestered to spotify so most of them are for my eyes only

hello can you give cassius a pet eagle in your fic? I hate that the only mention of domestic animals besides sophocles were the lions adrius gutted and the big one nero was feeding. cassius deserved an eagle and mustang deserved at least a fav horse

Hello! Thank you for the ask.

As it happens, Cassius already mentioned having domesticated eagles in Ice and Fire.

“What, at Eagle Nest [sic]?” he sneers. “At the ancestral home of the Family Bellona, whose motto is alis aquilae and whose sigil is an eagle in flight? You don’t say.”

It may seem intuitive, given the general environment of Eagle Rest and the aquiline iconography of the Family Bellona, but IG confirms there are nesting crags near the estate. As far as Alis Aquilae is concerned, the Bellona have traditionally tended their wild habitat and taken a share of the larger birds to train for falconry, which, despite the name, is suitable for most birds–of–prey. 

It would make sense if they were generally fond of hunting, given their martial predilections, although one example from the canon—the stalk mentioned in LB—isn’t really enough to corroborate that. But, if they are, they would be familiar with their eagles and perhaps even see them as household pets, particularly the older ones that have retired from the hunt and might need a bit of tending from their masters. 

And they certainly also have dogs, for hunting purposes, and likely cats, to hunt rodents throughout the estate, which I’ve imagined to be mostly outside—that is, a collection of smaller buildings interconnected by gardens and courtyards and pathways and whatnot, rather than one behemoth on the escarpment, which is more–or–less in accordance with what Ephraim describes in DA.

Also, they surely have their own horses, if not their own exclusive stables, as Cassius is said to be a phenomenal equestrian, itself an aristocratic mainstay for thousands of years and certainly a staple of highBorn culture and formative education.

And many of the Bellona have personal pets of various sorts, too. Cassius’ cousin, Tristan, for example, is infamously fond of insects. And, as I mention in Ch. 14, wee Bellona are often viewed as ‘kept creatures’ and functionally treated like pets by their older relatives, including Cassius himself.

That said, there’s lots of domesticated animals about, in addition to the wild animals that live on the escarpment beyond the borders of Eagle Rest, which they do regularly hunt for sport but mostly coexist with and tend, if needs be, because they consider themselves caretakers of their patch of wilderness. 

However, while Cassius says that Julian was very close to the eaglets—that they trusted him and felt safe in his hands—his was an exceptional case. Cassius himself was frequently nipped for his efforts and, overall, struggles to bond with animals; he perceives that they do not trust him.

He doesn’t explain why, but it’s mostly due to his mercuriality, as well as his strong sense of entitlement to intimacy he hasn’t earned and indignity when he’s not indulged; Julian, by contrast, has a much more gentle and patient temperament with a steadfast sense of commitment to his tasks. Cassius, generally, lacks the diligence and sensitivity that comes naturally to Julian.

But, after Julian’s death, Cassius does try to take his place and fulfill what have traditionally been his duties, in various ways, including tending the eaglets and selecting which ones will make prime hunters for the falconers. Which doesn’t come easily to him, nor do most of said duties, and you’ll have to wait and read how that works out, but he is tenacious about it, I’ll cede.

As for Mustang having a special horse, I agree. I’ve imagined that her love of horses originally sprung from Claudius—he taught her how to ride himself and it was their favorite thing to do together—and that her ensuing passion for the sport is due in large part to her enduring love for him; she feels closest to Claudius when she’s riding and it’s the easiest way for her to keep his memory alive. 

That said, her favorite horse from home is a retired Sunblood from the Thessalonican tracks that originally belonged to Claudius—he won him from Tharsus in a thrashing of No Limit Texas Hold’em—and she insisted on tending him herself after Claudius died, despite the fact that he was much too large for her to comfortably ride.

She persisted, of course, and this is why size can never daunt her (🤭) and why she can effortlessly ride massive beasts, like the stallion from the stables of Ishtar, as if they’re Shetland ponies.  

However, she doesn’t take this horse to Luna; he’s too fond of Mars. Which might have no impact on the plot whatsoever. And the above stories, in addition to the fact that Cassius himself loves to ride and that his Luna–residing older sister is a certified horsegirl and everything that implies, could mean nothing. They may or may not be relevant to certain events in Part III of my series.

So, you can rest assured, anon, that domesticated animals will occupy a significant role in my text.

Headcannon

When a princess of Hyrule is born, their first name is automatically Zelda, however their middle name will be unique to them. When either a) they ascend the throne or b) there are no other living female members of the Hyrulean royal family, they will take on Zelda as their name. Otherwise they will be known by their middle name.

Some middle name headcannons (I haven’t figured out names for all of them yet):

Skyward Sword - Zelda Hyrule, since she’s the first

Ocarina of Time - Zelda Lyra Hyrule aka Sheik, since they use a lyre and bc OoT heavily features music

Wind Waker - Zelda Tetra Hyrule, nuff said (also I think her mom never got around to telling her her actual first name, which is why she doesn’t find out until in-game)

Spirit Tracks - Zelda Anima Hyrule, since “anima” means spirit in Latin (6 years of Latin coming in handy :D)

Twilight Princess - Zelda Tenebra Hyrule, since “tenebris” means darkness in Latin

Link Between Worlds - Zelda Hilda Hyrule, bc *parallels* (Hilda’s full name is Hilda Zelda Lorule coincidentally)

Hyrule Warriors - Zelda Atalanta Hyrule, after the Greek mythological figure Atalanta (because Atalanta has myths around running and in HW you run around maps a lot but also bc they’re both bad*ss)

Breath of the Wild/Tears of the Kingdom - Zelda Diantha Hyrule, since according to the Internet, “Diantha” means divine flower in Greek, which fits with her Silent Princess motif

Diantha’s Mother - Zelda Aquila Hyrule, since “aquila” means eagle in Latin, which is why she and Urbosa call Diantha “Little Bird”

10,000 years before Breath of the Wild - Zelda Mirae Hyrule, since “mirae” means future in Korean (bc obviously I’m gonna flaunt being bilingual from childhood), which goes with the futuristic Sheikah tech that originated from that time period (side note: I headcannon she’s Sonia’s granddaughter and she worked with the Sheikah to recreate Zonai tech after seeing malice beginning to leak out of dehydrated Ganondorf)

Sonia - Zelda Sonia Hyrule, self-explanatory (side note: I like to think that Hyrule fell into ruin sometime after the end of more traditional Zelda games and Sonia and Rauru reestablished the kingdom, and this new Hyrule is the one from BotW and TotK)
