OH OH (stretch's hand) I HAVE A COOL RAY STORY:
So, I was stationed in South Korea back in 2004 and we took a trip to this place:
https://www.visitsealife.com/busan/en/
They had a thing where they would allow people to jump into wetsuits and go on a sort of seawalk in the large tank where they kept their bigger specimens. While we were getting out, I was waiting for my turn to jump into the shower to remove my suit but there was this holding tank with a single juvenile Devil Ray. One of these guys:

This animal was sort of just floating there for a second so I approached thinking it might be sick or something because I think aquariums do that, right? ( you have to separate sick animals from the general population?) What I know for sure is: it was WAY too small to go into the big tank with those bull sharks.
As I approached, it started to move more and swam right towards me and started doing these little flips. A handler noticed, came over, grabbed me by the arm, and dunked it into the tank and, I think my exact reaction was “what kind of DOG is this?!” lol
It perked up immediately, just swimming and flipping around my arm, then it would swim in bigger circles, come back up to me, flap its wings and little and just...having fun.
I don’t speak Korean, but our translator SWORE up and down these animals can’t really be trained to do stuff like that. But come to find out, they’re just like that.
I hope baby had/has a good life, wherever you are, little guy!
PS: Busan had a Bennigan’s at the time. Last Benni Monte Cristo I ever had.

TRUVU freshwater fish tanks are constructed with cell cast acrylic. We utilize CNC and Laser equipment along with traditional assembly methods to fabricate our fish tanks. TRUVU Freshwater aquariums are configured to accept freshwater style filters such as hang on power filters and canister filters.

how did you decide to get into the bio field, and what do you think would be a good,,, field test so to speak. to see if someone would be good in it. I love animals and fish but i know liking them is different from working with them so i have been thinking about voluteenering at a aqaurium or something to test
I think I started saying I wanted to be a biologist at like… age 7 or something, so that’s a thing I’ve always wanted to do. I grew up in a very rural area so the forest was kind of my playground and looking for weird squishy animals was my favorite game. So I’ve always had an interest in biology and it just seemed natural to pursue it as a career.
I would definitely recommend volunteering as a way to test your interest and to gain experience. If you want to go into animal care and education, aquariums and zoos are a good way to go. If you’re interested in field biology, National or state parks usually need volunteers for various seasonal tasks.
My very first foray into “real” biology was volunteering at a lab that was studying the amphibian fungus Chytrid, and even though I wasn’t doing a lot of the experiments and research due to the fact that I was like 14, it was still very cool and gave me an insight into how biology labs work. Any experience in the field is good experience!

I’m sorry about your parents’ cat passing :( do you have any nice memories of her? Alternatively what are some cool/interesting creatures you’ve seen on your travels 🧐
Tumblr media Tumblr media
his name was bastard and he was a feral cat, born in the wild and not handled by humans before, he was the sweetest most affectionate cat, followed you around like a dog but also extremely playful/violent lol, hence his name. he was a voracious hunter and once killed and ate a whole squirrel. nuts. i miss him, he was like my shadow, i still expect to see him come into the living room or whatever.
as for interesting creatures...
well ofc in antarctica i saw a lot of cool fauna. penguins, elephant seals and skuas were the usual scumbags but we did have a research aqaurium filled with anenomes, jellyfishes, seastars, crabs, all sorts of weird n wonderful things. also we had orcas spotted once. i saw them. theyre YUGE. at sea ive seen soooo maanyyy seabirds, flying fish, dolphins, whales too. turtles n stuff in tropical areas. when i was in brazil earlier this year i saw capys and monkeys and in south africa i saw baboons and other cool S.A fauna.... possibly the most impactful creature i saw was a northern gannet from when i was working in the mexican gulf..
Tumblr media
(not my pic) he looks kinda small but his wingspan can be up to 185 cm, much taller than me lol, and he flew next to me as i walked along deck and looked me right in the eye. wonder what he thought of me. they followed us all the way to sweden. such a beautiful travelling companion, i was particularly fond of their aerial acrobatics that they used to signal to their friends that they saw a fish, before proceeding to dive bomb into the water.
thank you for asking btw, losing him was v sad :(
