My little sister and I always joke and say that fawns are the puppies of the forest. When one curious buck at the zoo took interest in my camera, I could not resist the opportunity to capture the little deer on paper. To add emphasis on his quizzical expression, I shortened my depth of field drawing attention to the attentive eyes, sniffing nose, and tilted ears. What kind of big sister would I be if I could not give her a piece named after our admittedly silly nickname? It is oftentimes easy to feel creatively constrained by the limits an art assignment poses, yet I have learned to find beauty in those boundaries. They help provide motivation for me to truly dig deep, to think laterally, beyond what others have already done. This assignment is a prime example of that. Having seen countless still lifes of artist tools before, capturing something technically pleasing alone did not inspire me. After mulling it over for a few days, I decided to center the piece on that very problem. In surrounding the paintbrushes, a tool for creative expression, with vibrant primary color barriers, I was able to speak to the very nature of boundaries. It is oftentimes frustrating to have restrictions first imposed, but if looked at as a gift rather than a hindrance they may become beautiful. Despite being of a healthy weight I have had people comment on what I eat or my exercise patterns. Though I know their idea of “health” does not fall in line with my own, I can’t deny that their words still hurt especially when those words come from those I care about. As a society, we seem to have bought into this idea that one size fits all, one rigorous exercise program, one level of nutritional consumption, one body shape. Yet reality does not reflect the American ideal, we are all born with different needs, different metabolism levels, different body types. Thus, it’s easy to see why mental illnesses like anorexia nervosa and bulimia are a serious problem in our country, especially among teens and young adults of both genders. The first step in fixing a problem is realizing we have one. The second is making the conscious decision to do something about it. Namely being kind and thoughtful with the words that come from our mouths. If you are struggling with one of these illnesses, please, seek professional help as well as an uplifting group of friends to lean on. This may sound cheesy or have been something you have heard a million times before but it is the truth, you are loved and deserving of that love no matter what you look like. Stay strong, you will get through this, I’m rooting for you kid. George Washington was a great lover of dogs, having raised many in his lifetime, including a Dalmatian that served as his coach dog, Madame Moose. I wanted to pay tribute to the man, both for his feats of heroism and leadership, and as a genuine person, a caregiver, and an animal lover. Therefore, I decided to parody one of his famous portraits with Mme. Moose at the head. I like to think it would have gotten a laugh out of him.
