Day 1 of #AprilAskTheMaker - where we attempt to answer your questions through the month of April. . Our first question is from @sarahplayshouse on Instagram: What do you do when you have multiple characters using the same colour three (eg black)? Do you do one character at a time in full or move onto the next character to do their black thread before going back to the other with a new colour? . 👩🏻‍💻 I was having this conversation with someone only this weekend. Answer: I do both. It completely depends on my mood at the time, and whether I can be bothered to reposition my frame. Usually I work on one colour at a time - do all the black stitches before moving on to the next colour (2). I find it saves time changing the thread colour in my needle, or packing away colours all the time. However, If I am working on a challenge (like #AprilAtoZ) I tend to finish a character off before I more on, or if I’m looking for that sense of accomplishment- the “hey look, I finished a person!” In photos 3 and 4 I’m concentrating more on finishing a figure, mostly so I don’t have to reposition my frame! . Some stitching exerts will say that you should work on one 10x10 section at a time, “parking” your thread colours to one side until you move on to the next grid. It’s meant to make it look neater on the back. But I’ve never been able to work like that - I never have enough needles on hand, and don’t like having to constantly rethread my needles when changing colour. I also don’t like hard-and-fast stitching rules. Comes from learning to stitch when I was a teenager I guess! . Gavin (🧔🏻) likes to work on one person, moving on to the second/third only to use up the thread on his needle before switching colours. .
