Perfect Team

”That's it, now add a pinch of salt and put the butter in the pan to melt. Remember to keep the heat low. Good." James fits his entire left side flush with Q's right, both men gazing into the small saucepan in front of them.

"Now?" 

"Another moment, listen to the bubbling. Aaaaaand now!" Q pours in the milky egg mixture, reaching for a spoon to start the essential stirring. James removes the metal spoon from his reach and hands him the wooden one with a squared off corner.

"Jesus, Q, you of all people should know not to use a metal spoon on a copper pan. Really, I don't know why you can't do this, it's just scrambled eggs, and you're a genius, I've heard."

Q pauses his stirring to turn and kiss the prickly cheek right next to him, the scent of sweat and sex lingering on his skin from the previous night. As much as Q loves the man's expensive colognes, this is his very favourite, eau de just-home-from-a-mission-safely. James is lured in, turning to meet Q's lips.

"You're not stirring! Bloody hell, Q, what am I going to do with you? Here, let me see if I can rescue it."

James grumbles as they swap places and he rapidly scrapes at the bottom of the pan, only to find his hopes dashed once more. Q presses into his back, arms round around James' waist and peers over his shoulder.

"I burned it again, didn't I?" 

"Hmmm." 

"Sorry love. Here, I'll clean out the pan."

Q reaches for the battered pan, dents all around the top, bottom blackened, but still polished to a reflective shine with military enthusiasm. 

"I'll do it, love," James sighes, "you make the tea." 

Q fills the kettle and stands back so James can wash up his ancient saucepan, liberated from the kitchen of Katie Kincaid and thrown in the kit bag of sixteen year old Able Seaman Bond. He pops 2 slices of multigrain into the toaster and stands back to watch the efficient, powerful movements of James making him the best scrambled eggs he has ever tasted. The kettle boils and he pours it into the waiting pot, taking milk and smoked salmon from the fridge just as the toast pops. He presents James with two neatly arranged plates just as the creamy, buttery eggs are ready. The perfect team as always.

Usually I write bookmarks after I finish a work, but doing it for this one after reading only the fifth of what will be a total of twelve chapters because I already LOVE this story. It shows Bond, currently on mandatory suspension, as he begins therapy to address the reasons for that decision. Each short, powerful chapter reveals more to James, himself, and us, the readers, about the emotional cost of sexpionage. Set in between canon events in Quantum of Solace + Skyfall, we...

WAIT A MINUTE! I cannot in good conscience say more about the story itself!

I can tell you I am smitten with it because of how beautifully + effectively @aprettyspy addresses a topic certainly glossed over in canon and, honestly, not often discussed in fic. To start off Fest, Team Q Branch is having a team song lyric prompt exchange. I picked @aprettyspy ’s prompt which is from “Love in The Dark” by Adele.

"Please, stay where you are. Don't come any closer. Don't try to change my mind. I'm being cruel to be kind."

"Please, stay where you are,” Q said, without even a glance or stutter of his fingers.

Bond, as always, paid him no mind.

“Don't come any closer,” Q said with full-on eye contact and scowl.

“Don't try to change my mind,” Bond said, his arms crossed, his stance steady. And then he lunged. Like a great stinking shedding middle-aged lion with absolutely no sense of decency. Or personal space.

“I'm being cruel to be kind," Bond insisted as he tried to get the better of Q.

“You’re being a dick to be a dick because—” Q waved in a gesture to encompass all of Bond “—you.”

Bond went for full-on PoutyMcPoutFace. Q was not deterred.

“It makes you sad,” Bond insisted with what lesser men might call earnestness.

“Who are you to police my emotions?! You wouldn’t know an emotion if you fell out of a helicopter, landed atop it and gutted it in a back alley!”

“You’re going to take one full sip, spit out the second and then airclaw at your tongue and make the mopiest faces—“

“Afraid I’ll cut into your allotted time for your magnificent sulk which is—“ Q pointedly looked at his watch—“13 hours and 59 minutes of the 14 hours remaining in the day.”

“—and whine until I finally put knock out drops in your nightcap once it’s gone 3,” Bond continued over him, the brute.

“I want Evie. You make a horrible girlfriend, Bond.”

Bond huffed and said, “Q,” with the levels of exasperation that burn right past smolder.

Q made eye contact while he steadily lifted the cup toward his mouth.

“Fine,” Bond said, “If you let me drink your poisonous horrible nostalgia drink, I’ll throw you over my shoulder like the cave man you purport me to be, drag you home—traffic signals be damned— let you sniff at my mouth like the ridiculous half feral kitten you absolutely are and then start off doing that thing with my tongue that drives you right out your infuriatingly brilliant mind.”

Q made a face.

“Unless you pass out in a puddle of drool on my lap because hair pets are your secret weakness.”

Q sniffed. “Evie would have the best ice cream and also sing to me.”

“Would Eve also have a massive—“

“You’d be surprised.”

“I really wouldn’t,” Bond said.

Q waggled his eyebrows and Bond snorted, then took Qi’s hand.

“Q.”

“And none of this over the shoulder nonsense. It’s bridal carry or not at all,” Q said.

“And it only took me 157 concussions to realize you’re the love of my life. But who’s counting?”

“Marie in Medical,” Q muttered, “That’s who.”

“C’mon, Q. Let’s go make your cats pause their plans of world domination.”

“As if they hadn’t already set them in motion long before you stalked me home.”

"There was no sign of anyone in the living area. The prickle at the back of his neck had Bond unholster his weapon as he pushed open the bedroom door.

"I do believe I said don't shoot your fellow agent, 007," an exhausted-looking Q sighed.

Q, what the hell are you doing here?" Bond rumbled, unimpressed at his Quartermaster being in the field. The last time had not ended well for either of them and things between them had been strained ever since."

Thank you for the tag, @anyawen! These were so much fun!

Answers under the cut, and tagging @sweetbabyangels, @mr-iskender, @stinastar, @aprettyspy and @thestalwartheart, in case you haven't done this already and it's of interest!

1. How many works do you have on AO3? 30! That number seems astonishing to me now, considering I started writing fic in earnest like a year-and-a-half ago. 😁

2. What’s your total A03 word count? 138,358

3. What fandoms do you write for? James Bond, Glass Onion/Knives Out, and I just wrote my first fic for The Old Guard fandom, which has pulled me in by the lapels and refused to let me go. And the very first fic I ever wrote was for Stardew Valley.

4. What are your top five fics by kudos? 1. A Good Man (Benoit Blanc/Phillip) 2. rain (00q) 3. open line (00q) 4. The More Loving One (00q) 5. Must Love Cats (00q)

5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not? Ok yes I definitely do and I love to *and also* I'm so sorry, I'm 288 days (yes I just checked) behind in responding to comments, because this year has been...something else. So, taking the opportunity to say that a) all of your comments are incredible bright spots for me, and b) I am working my way steadily through and enjoying your comments all over again as I re-read and respond to them.

6. What’s the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? WELP (eyes my pile o' fics warily). If we go based off the fics with "Major Character Death" as a warning, for a certain value of angst, it's a tie between offering and and the wind at their backs. But both of these fics deal with grief, and the complicated emotions that result from the persistence of love even after the object of that love is gone, and there's some hope in that, too, I think.

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? lmao most of the rest of them other than the two in number 6? 😂 this is a hard one to answer, so I'll list my RomCom-iest fics for now (Must Love Cats for 00q and in a space that they belong for The Old Guard). Special shout-out to 'tis the damn season, though, because the happiness at the end of this fic feels like some of the hardest fought, to me, and some of the tenderest I've written, I think.

8. Do you get hate on fics? No--I've gotten a few less than diplomatic comments, and a couple people making unflattering notes in bookmarks that I don't think they meant for me to see, but nothing terrible.

9. Do you write smut? ::offers you rain and for the age of the earth, and after as if I am a sommelier presenting you with some very fine wine:: "this one has notes of--" you know what I'm just going to stop there.

10. Do you write crossovers? I haven't yet!

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen? No, thank goodness (knocks on wood).

12. Have you ever had a fic translated? Not yet! #goals

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before? Use. Your. Words., which was a collaborative poem for 007 fest 2023. 😁

14. What’s your all-time favourite ship? I spent about five minutes hemming and hawing about this but you know what, it's impossible to pick. 😂

15. What’s the WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? Like Anyawen, I have aspirations of finishing all the ones hanging out in my Scrivener app...someday. Probably the one I have the most doubts about is a 5 + 1 fic where Bond tries out different activities post retirement. I still love the idea and some of the vision I had for this one, but it lives almost entirely in my head, still.

16. What are your writing strengths? I think maybe I have a good ear for language, both in terms of the rhythm of sentences and paragraphs, and for conveying a character's voice or accent. But it's hard to assess your own strengths, sometimes, so that's just my best guess!

17. What are your writing weaknesses? I'm actively working on trying to be better at descriptions, especially in giving details about setting or background. I realized I give these things short shrift, sometimes, and want to change that!

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic? I'll do it with languages I'm fluent in (and have done it with Spanish, since I'm a native speaker).

19. First fandom you wrote for? Stardew Valley, in What Dreams May Come.

20. Favourite fic you’ve ever written? Omg, another one that is almost impossible to answer! I think I have to go with all the flags we've hung. This is one of my least popular fics--it's a rarepair, the love depicted in it is complicated (though no less real), and it deals with light topics like, you know, structural racism in the United States. As one does. But it's a fic that's incredible close to my heart, for many reasons, and I remain so proud of this one.

WIP Wednesday moving in

From a 00Q fic @aprettyspy prompted, where Q realises that they may be living together without ever having discussed it.

Two weeks later, on a Saturday morning, it was a dressing gown on the hook in the bathroom. Q had been on his way out of the bathroom when it had caught his eye, and he had done a double take. Dark navy satin, rich and luxurious, and Q could picture just how gorgeous Bond would look in it, the navy offset against his skin and making his bright blue eyes even more vibrant. He’d opened his mouth, then closed it again. He stared at it for a long time, as if it might eventually provide an explanation for itself. He finally walked back into the bedroom, where Bond was still lying face down in the sheets.

“Do you have something you want to tell me, or ask me?” Q asked.

Bond lifted his head slightly to peer at him with one eye. “No?”

Q narrowed his eyes. “You sure?”

Bond lifted his head properly. “I think so? Is everything alright?”

“Yes. Perfectly. I’ll go put on the kettle, then.”

Bond grunted, dropping his head back to the pillows. He appeared in the kitchen around ten minutes later, in the dressing gown and… matching slippers. Q’s hands twitched around his mug of tea.

“Now you’re just having me on, you don’t actually wear those,” Q said.

“What?” Bond asked, as if he didn’t know what Q was referring to. He looked down at himself in confusion, as if he didn’t see the issue.

“You—“ Q started, “The—”  

Bond stared at him, perplexed. Q was sure he was being had, somehow, and yet Bond was doing a very good job of maintaining his innocence. Q decided to leave it, for now.

“It’s your turn to make breakfast,” Q said instead. Bond agreed easily, turning to the range after pouring himself some coffee.

Sorry you are having a shit evening. Let's talk Bond. Are you prepared for a new Bond? Do you think those of us who love 00Q will just stay in our own 2012 Skyfall Era bubble?

I've been avoiding thinking about a new Bond until very recently tbh 🙈

I don't have any theories about who it might be, though I think the Aaron Taylor Johnson rumours are now probably too overblown to be true (he holidayed at Goldeneye and tagged his location - I feel like that's something you wouldn't do if you'd signed an airtight NDA that probably shocks you by the balls if you break it.)

I'm curious to see how they're going to reinvent Bond. And I'm trying to keep an open mind to anyone and anything. Look how people wrote off Daniel Craig at first. I'm determined not to make that mistake with the new Bond!

One thing I am a little nervous about is the rest of the cast continuing on. Particularly Ben. As much as I love him as Q, I'm not sure I'm prepared to see a different dynamic with another Bond just yet. I'm sure I'll be over it when the new film comes out though!
