TW: References to a previous toxic relationship and sex
Under a readmore both for the warning... and because it's a much longer snippet than 3 sentences.
“Serious, Steve, I care about you a lot. I need you to not make choices you’ll regret probably before your heat’s even over.”
The man—Steve apparently—looked around widely, and Eddie didn’t have enough time to look away before being caught. He flushed, but Steve did too. His eavesdropping had definitely been found out.
Steve kept his gaze as he continued speaking to Robin. “I can make my own choices.”
“Oh my god… That means you’re going to fucking text him, doesn’t it?”
“I haven’t decided,” Steve said.
Since he’d been found out anyway, Eddie mouthed, Liar.
Steve grinned and mouthed back, We’ll See.
“You know I love you deeply, and if I had a better option for you, I absolutely would offer it. But you know how this goes! You’re better off spending it alone than spending it with him.”
After taking a second to scent the air, Steve’s eyes dilated just enough for Eddie to see. If they hadn’t been locked on each other, he probably would have missed it. “Honestly, Rob, I might have another option in the works.” His smirk deepened at the way Eddie flushed. “I can’t promise I’m making good choices, but I’ll try not to make toxic ones, okay?”
“Okay… I love you, dingus. I’ll see you later this week.”
“Love you, Rob.”
Steve put his phone away without looking away from Eddie. “You know it’s rude to listen to conversations on the subway.”
The woman next to him snorted, then looked mortified that she’d done so. When both Eddie and Steve glanced at her, she shrugged defensively. “If you don’t want to be listened to, tell your friend not to talk so loud.”
They pulled into the next station, and she got up to hurry away. Eddie wondered if this was actually her stop or if she just wanted out of their conversation. Either way, he swung down into the now empty seat next to Steve.
“‘Absolutely not’ an ex or something?”
Looking anywhere but at Eddie, Steve shrugged. “Hard to say. I think we’d actually have to have been dating to be exes.”
“Situationship then?”
Steve snorted. “I hate that term. But yeah, I guess that’s what you can call it when someone pins you in the gym, hits you up when the bars close, and expects you to always be available to fuck but won’t do anything more than insult you to your face when other people are around.”
Eddie winced and said, “Yeah, Robin’s right. Fuck that guy. Or don’t. Actually don’t. The goal is not to fuck that guy.”
“So I’m told,” Steve said. He pulled his phone back out and stared at the message he’d typed out but hadn’t sent. After a moment, he reblocked the contact. “Happy?”
“Exuberant.”
Raising a brow, Steve shifted to more fully face Eddie, despite the tight squeeze in their current space. “So I know this is awkward and incredibly formal of me…”
“Arguably this is worse than texting a toxic ex.”
Steve had the grace to blush again. “Yeah, well, stranger on the train seems better.”
“I feel like Robin’s still going to kill you when she finds out you propositioned some guy because he overheard your phone call.”
“I mean he’s a hot guy, so I don’t think she’ll be too mad at me.”
Eddie blinked at him. “I’m starting to see why you have a shitty ex. Have some standards, Steve.”

Hello there, lovely duchess <3
I'd love to see what you come up with for prompt #8!
Take care! :)

summary: You and Bucky are FWB and you've been together for a while now but that's all about to change warnings: kissing, fluff, swearing, gambling (don't do it kids), mentions of smut a/n: yeah so this took an age and that's because my motivation went on vacation and i had to wrangle it back through customs
Prompts from this list
»»————- ♔ ————-««
You’d met the Avengers when Tony had finally had enough of your constant nagging and had agreed to let you meet the team he always spoke so much about - not to mention you wanted to see the people he couldn’t stop complaining about in the flesh - so he’d finally relented and introduced you to everyone as only Tony knew how. With a party.
You’d been so excited to meet everyone you hadn’t even minded when the dark brooding man at the bar had spilled your drink on your dress, he was too handsome for you to be mad and with the gleaming metal arm on his left side there was only one person he could be,
“It’s perfectly alright Sergeant Barnes, it’s just a drink” you’d given him your best smile and offered to buy him a drink instead but he’d refused and you hadn’t seen him the rest of the night. Much to your dismay, he’d been someone you’d been looking forward to meeting the most.
In Bucky’s mind anyway he wasn’t planning on getting too close to you, figuring that if you were Tony’s friend there was a high chance you were just another upper east side park avenue princess. A socialite who only cared about wealth and who she could be photographed next to in newspapers and he didn’t have time for that anymore. He was a different man now.
Then you were around more often, spending time at the compound with Natasha, getting lunch with Wanda, offering to bank roll the team since you had “more money than I know what to do with” and it didn’t seem fair for Tony to have to do everything when he had a family to support as well.
Slowly but surely you wormed your way into the team’s hearts and it got to the point where everyone was asking Bucky what his issue was with you, why did he not like you? Had he even spoken to you?
Bucky had brushed off every question, he’d just ignored the needling and the nagging until finally he couldn’t. He’d blown up at Peter who’s eyes had gone wide as the teenager stuttered out an apology. Bucky hated himself for it, even more so when everyone was walking on eggshells around him afterwards, even Steve and Sam who knew him best.
He’d gone out to clear his head and off all the gin joints in all the world you had to be in the one he chose. With your warm smile and offering to buy his drinks, telling the bar staff to put everything on your tab despite Bucky’s protests that he could buy his own drinks. You just rolled your eyes at him and moved to sit next to him instead.
It ended up with just the two of you in the bar that night, your cheeks rosy from the alcohol and your eyes glassy with tears of joy as you listened to his stories and laughed at his jokes. Maybe you weren’t as bad as Bucky originally thought but he still wasn’t planning on getting closer than he needed to, until you’d put your hand on his thigh when you settled the tab and offered to split a cab.
You’d both ended up tangled in your bedsheets, laughing and joking, gasping and moaning well into the night. It had been a while for both of you and this release was definitely needed, plus you’d ended up teaching Bucky a few things when the initial groping like horny teenagers had worn off.
You’d also introduced him to the term ‘friends with benefits’ which is where you found yourself currently. Of course you both went on dates separately but you found yourself cancelling plans more and more to spend time with Bucky instead. To be curled up on the couch watching a terrible movie which was usually forgotten about halfway through for other more entertaining activities that could be partaken in on a couch.
»»————- ♔ ————-««
Maybe it was silly of you to think you could resist having feelings for someone like Bucky, someone so kind, caring, funny and someone you felt so comfortable around but that’s exactly what happened. You’d woken up one morning with the smell of him cooking in your apartment kitchen with the radio playing something you didn’t really care about. You’d curled up in the blankets on the bed and revelled in the domesticity of the whole situation and it had struck you. You really cared for this man and not just as a random hook up.
The only problem was, did Bucky feel the same? Everyone else seemed to think so, when you’d spoken to Steve and Sam and Natasha and Wanda and even Scott they’d all seemed to think you and Bucky were already a couple. So you’d enacted a plan, was it your smartest plan? Probably not. Were you going to do it anyway? Damn straight.
You’d created a new tinder profile and specifically matched with the most boring man you could find. The poor bastard had no idea what he was in for or why you’d decided to go out with him but you needed him to be the human equivalent of the colour beige for the plan to work.
Bringing the man around the compound to meet the team, telling Bucky you couldn’t spend time with each other sexually anymore since you and … Dave were serious now and it wasn’t right to cheat on your boyfriend.
Bucky to his credit had wished you well and was happy you’d found someone, outwardly anyway. He’d known the ‘relationship’ the two of you had couldn’t last, that of course you’d move on and find someone worthy of your time and attention. Did it hurt? Like a bitch but he was going to be the bigger man.
Or at least he had wanted to be. The more you brought Dave around the more Bucky wondered what the hell you were doing with a man like that, he couldn’t make you laugh the way Bucky could, where your nose would crinkle in the middle and you’d gasp for breath. He didn’t know how you liked your coffee in the morning, iced usually and loaded with sugar. He sure as shit didn’t know how you liked to be touched.
It had come to an ugly head one evening when you and Dave had gone for dinner, in a restaurant you and Bucky would hang out in all the time. It was the straw that broke the camel’s back, that and the asgardian mead that Thor had left on his last visit. Bucky had taken a shot for some dutch courage and driven his bike straight to the restaurant pushing past the staff who tried to stop him,
“Y/N” he yelled, causing you to look at him with wide eyes and a surprised expression.
“Bucky, what are you doing here? Is everything alright? Did something happen to Steve or Sam?”
“Forget them and forget this guy too, you’re coming with me” he reached down to where you were sitting and wrapped his metal hand around your upper arm, “come on”
“Bucky no, I’m on a date I can’t just leave!” you protested, “David, I'm so sorry about this”
David opened his mouth to say something but a glare from Bucky told him that wasn’t a wise move. Instead he seemed to shrink back into his seat under the weight of Bucky’s icy glare,
“Come on doll” Bucky said again, hoisting you up from your seat by his grip on your upper arm, “we’re leaving”
“James Barnes! I am not your property, let go of my arm right now! If you have something you want to talk about we can talk about it later, I am with David and you have no right to barge in here like this!”
“The hell I don’t”
“Leave James, we’ll talk about this later”
Bucky was about to rebuke you again but was interrupted by a man in a fancy suit clearing his throat, apparently you and Bucky had caused enough of a commotion that several guests had complained and now both of you were being asked to leave. Which suited Bucky just fine. He grabbed you and pulled you from the booth ignoring your cries and protests and simply pulled you along with him until you both were stood at his bike,
“Come on”
“No! You do not get to manhandle me like you own me and then act like nothing is wrong, if you had something you wanted to talk to me about we could have done it like grown ups”
“Oh yeah? Like Dave? Is that what you do with him? Talk like grown ups?”
“What David and I do is none of your business Barnes”
“It is my business cause you’re my business, you’re my girl not his!”
You blinked at Bucky a few times before you huffed out a laugh, that was definitely confusing. Why were you laughing?
“Oh my god! You couldn’t have said something earlier? You had to make a scene? How am I supposed to come back here now?” you were still laughing, “not to mention I owe Steve $50 because he bet you couldn’t last the month”
“Wha? You and Steve had a bet goin’ about me lastin’?” Bucky was beginning to get agitated now, what the hell were you and Steve betting on?
“Yeah! I mean honestly Buck did you think I really liked David? He’s the most boring human being alive! I mean yeah he’s nice enough but oh my god of course I wasn’t serious about him!”
“Then why were ya out with him?”
“To see what you would do!” you said exasperatedly. Bucky raised his eyebrow, what the hell did you mean by that? “Oh my god how can you be this dense, it’s you I want to be with Barnes, not David. You! So I picked David to see if you would just let me be or if you felt the same way!”
“Wha? You couldn’t have just asked me?” Bucky shoots back, “you had to make this whole convoluted plan?”
“Right because if I’d asked you you’d have said you wanted whatever was best for me and if I wanted to see other people that would be fine and you’d never tell me what you really wanted. At least now I know” you said batting your eyelashes at him “you like me, you called me yours”
Bucky groaned and ran a hand down his face. He’d been an actual idiot. He’d told himself he was fine with you seeing other people, that this was just how the modern world was like. He couldn’t expect to hold onto someone like you forever. Now he’d gotten you kicked out of your favourite restaurant and had put his hands on you in a way he swore he never would. That being said, none of that would have happened if you’d been honest with him, no matter what you thought he’d say to you. Now here you were batting your eyelashes at him like nothing had happened,
“Don’t you dare give me those sex eyes right now! This is a serious situation, here!”
“Oh shut up and kiss me Barnes”
That he could do. Repercussions from his actions be damned. You were his. All his.

Title: Lost In Zero Gravity (Part Twenty Two) Summary:  Fem!Reader x Mob Boss!Tony Stark x Mob Boss!Steve Rogers.  Reader is a call girl who runs high end parties. She catches the attention of Tony Stark who invites her back to his room with his friend. She might have performed too well because she becomes their new favorite play toy and they don’t like to share. Words: 2,519 Warnings (for the fic in entirety): Smut, prostitution, infidelity, angst, domestic violence, stalking, possessive behavior, drug use
Part Twenty One || Part Twenty Three || Masterpost (mobile) || Fanfic masterpost
Sullen, you walked out of the bathroom. Luna had started scratching, luring you out of the bathroom, and she bolted in past you towards her litter box. You had been in the bathroom for almost a half hour, crying over the test you had been clenching in your hands. You had eventually tossed it into the waste bin, closing the lid so you did not have to look at it anymore. But it did not erase the fact you knew you were pregnant.
The apartment was quiet and you wondered if you were alone but coming out of the hall, you saw the balcony door was open, the curtains moving gently in the breeze. Tony was sitting out on the balcony in one of the new patio chairs that had been bought for the new space. He heard you shuffle in and turned his head. His hand was gripping the short glass tightly — almost empty of the amber liquid. The bottle was sitting next to him on the small table.
You stopped in the doorframe and his eyes ran over you, remorse in his expression.
“I’d offer you some but...” Tony said, stiffly holding his glass up briefly, trying to joke but it fell flat under the weight of the situation.
Tossing your hands out defeated, you asked tearfully, “How… why would he…”
“What do you want to do?” Tony asked, sincerely.
He sounded genuine, like he meant it that he wanted your opinion. The first time he had ever asked you to have control over a choice had to be this.
“I don’t know,” you told him, sniffling. Wiping at your eyes, you asked, “Have you spoken to him?”
Tony let out a wry laugh and said, “’Spoken’ would be a very loose term.” He saw you were looking at him expectantly and he offered, “I saw him last week. The same day you got moved. We fought. Badly. I actually suited up.” Your eyes widened. “I can’t take him hand to hand without it. I provoked him though so what else should I have expected?”
“What do you mean ‘provoked’?”
“I was furious about what he’d done and I made some snide remark about how he never seems to be able to be sure he’s the dad. It was… warranted but it wasn’t helpful. In hindsight, I mean.”
“So, you haven’t told him that I’m pregnant. That’s what I’m asking.”
“No,” Tony said quickly, his eyes stern, locked with yours. “No. I am not going to do that. You think he’s been bad? If he found out that, I don’t want to think about what lengths he would go to. I can tell you exactly what I think you should do and that’s making an appointment, terminating, and not telling him about it at all. But… what do you want?”
He watched you intently and you finally said, “I need some time.”
It looked like that was not what he wanted to hear but he said nothing, just taking another drink, finishing off his scotch. His phone buzzed and he looked over lazily. He rolled his eyes and opened up the bottle again.
Knowing the answer before you even asked, “Steve?”
“Mhmm,” Tony answered, pouring himself another small glass. He twisted the cap back on and picked up his glass. “He must have visited the apartment and realized you’re not there. I’m surprised he waited a whole week with how angry he was when I saw him last.”
“I suppose I should just go turn my phone off because I don’t want him blowing me up,” you muttered, turning and walking back into the apartment.
<><><>
You had taken the day to figure out what you thought was best and even if it still felt a little rash, you felt confident that you could get the upper hand. Closing the bedroom door, you went and sat on the edge of your bed. Tony was working on his laptop in the kitchen with his headphones in. There was little risk he was going to overhear the conversation you were about to have.
“Where are you?” Steve answered tightly.
“Good morning to you too,” you replied coolly. “I think you know why I’m calling.”
“I have an idea. Look, Y/N. I can get that you feel a little shook up by what happened but—"
You interjected forcibly, “Why did you do it?”
He hated being interrupted, especially by you. And you heard it in his rigid tone, “Do what? Take you on the mission? Not tell you beforehand. You’re going to have to be clearer.”
At least he was aware he had fucked up multiple times. But he was not talking about his most egregious fault to date.
“My birth control. Why do you want me pregnant?”
It was quiet for a beat before Steve let out a scornful laugh. “Ah. So, Tony did say something. Bastard couldn’t keep it to himself.”
“Well, it does involve him pretty intimately!” you snapped. “You didn’t just fuck me over, you could have fucked him over too.”
Steve sounded a little breathless when he asked, “Are you...”
You detected an uptick in his voice; he sounded hopeful. And you wanted to sock him for it.
Not answering him directly, you inquired, “What if it’s yours? What then?” You could hear him breathing and you pressed when he did not answer quick enough, “What then, Steve?”
“If it’s mine and my wife’s isn’t mine, then I want it. I want my child.”
That is what you thought he was going to say and you played your card, “What do I get?”
Chuckling, Steve asked, “Bargaining, are you?”
“Seems I have the power to do so potentially. So, if it’s yours and you want it, I want you to buy me out. I don’t want to owe you anymore.”
“You talk to Tony about that?”
“I mean half Steve. The half you have invested. Don’t worry about Tony and I.”
“You still want to be with him,” Steve mused. He sounded dejected; you had wounded his ego and that was apparent. But what else did he expect with how he had treated you?
“Do you agree?” you asked ignoring what he said.
It sounded like it took everything in him to say the words; like he said it through gritted teeth. “Fine. I’ll pay you out.”
“And if it isn’t yours? Tony doesn’t want another kid. And I can’t get tested until nine weeks for paternity and it takes ten to fourteen days to get results. I would need an appointment made shortly after. To terminate, I mean.”
Steve was quick to answer, sounding sour. “Tony’s got connections.”
“You’ve got connections. This is your mess.” Steve was silent and you pressed, “I’m only going to agree if you agree to pay me out either way it lands. You owe me that. You betrayed me—“
Steve started to laugh, scornfully saying, “Betrayed. Do you hear your—“
You cut in forcibly, having a lot bigger confidence being on the phone and not having him tower over you, although you were shaking from nervousness still, “And you guarantee an appointment for termination if it’s Tony’s and not yours.”
“You might not even have to wait for the 9 weeks,” Steve said. “My wifes got an appointment in three days. I can order a test for her. If it’s mine, then you’re off the hook.”
‘Off the hook’, you thought to yourself angrily. Like it was a light thing you were discussing.
“If it’s yours, Steve, and I go through with this, I want it in writing. Legal. All of it.” You made yourself sound as threatening as you could.
“Man, you are learning very quickly. It’s impressive really. Where do you want me to send the document to?”
He was trying to be clever and figure out where you were. Get you to slip up in your emotions.
“Nice try. Tony doesn’t even know I’m calling you.”
“Hmm. He wants to keep you hidden away then. Classic Tony. He doesn’t like sharing; he was a spoiled, only child.”
“Or maybe he’s pissed at how you treated me,” you snapped, annoyed he was acting like Tony had done what he had out of left field.
“Right. Ticked off protective daddy. What do you think his endgame is? With you, I mean, dove.” The nickname made your skin crawl now. “Do you think he’s going to continuing pampering you? Forever? Tony gets bored quickly.”
You were not here to play mind games with him, and you were not going to rise to his bait. You were fighting one battle at a time, and he was yours right now.
“Look, I’ll talk to him,” you said, wanting to end the conversation. “You can give it to him at the facility.”
“Cause him and I seeing each other went so well last time,” Steve chuckled, and you knew he was referring to what Tony had told you about their physical altercation. “Fine. Work your magic on him. I doubt he’ll tell you no though cause he can’t deny you anything.” You gritted your teeth at his bitter tone. Steve tried another angle, “You really won’t even meet me in public?”
“No. One, because I know you’ll probably try to follow me and secondly, I don’t want to see you. Not after what you did at the docks and now this.”
Steve exhaled sharply and his tone made your skin crawl with apprehension at its ferociousness, “If you are carrying my child, Y/N, you need to see me. I will be around. I want—“
“You’ll want what? To have access to me?”
“You’re damn right. To check in.”
“I can take care of myself,” you said, fighting to keep your voice even.
“I don’t trust that!” Steve snapped. “You – or fucking Tony – won’t keep me away entirely. I won’t stand for it. I’ll be at the doctor appointments. I won’t budge on that, Y/N. I deserve to be there.”
You bit your cheeks, your mind racing. You had not anticipated him wanting to be around like that. You thought you could go through the pregnancy and give him the child at the end. It seemed he was not going to make it that easy.
“Y/N?”
“Fine. If it’s yours. Doctor appointments. But that’s it.”
“Good. Glad you fucking understand. I’ll be in touch,” Steve said tersely before hanging up without saying goodbye.
<><><>
Steve was fuming when he hung the phone up. She was getting mouthy, and he hated she was dangling it over his head like she was. He had planted the idea though, her paying off her debt. She had found a way to get him by the balls and he had to play the game.
He let out a shout, kicking the waste basket by his desk, sending it careening into the wall.
<><><>
Chewing your salad, you shot a look at Tony across the table. He was eating while he was working on a hologram. You had gotten off the phone with Steve and hour ago and made up a chicken salad for the pair of you. You had been quiet while Tony worked – he had a problem of stepping away when he was set on something – but you needed to confess because you needed him for this to work out.
You swallowed your bite and said bluntly, “I spoke with Steve.”
Tony stopped chewing and snapped his gaze up to you. He asked with a full mouth, “Excuse me?”
Twirling your fork around, you admitted, “I called him. He wasn’t here at the apartment. Obviously. You were here. You would have known if he was.”
He swallowed his food now, tossing his fork into the bowl, and then demanded, “Why?” He actually turned off the hologram. Apparently you could pry his attention away with the right motivator.
You met his eyes and said, “I wanted to hear it from him. Why he did it. And he told me...” you paused before saying, “And I wanted to know what my stakes are.”
“‘Stakes’?”
“Yeah. Like what if it is his? What happens? And what do I get for carrying it for him?”
Tony’s expression pulled a 180 from confused to irritated. “Y/N, you can’t think—“
“I can think, actually,” you cut in harshly. “Very well too sometimes. He’s gonna pay me out of his half of the contract he said if I carry to term. Regardless of if it’s his. If it’s yours, he’s gonna set up an appointment to terminate. I’ll be free of him either way.”
“Free of him...”
“I don’t want him touching me ever again.”
Tony relaxed if only for a second at your admission, but the moment was brief. Exasperated, he argued, “I fully heartedly understand that, love. Believe me, I do. But... you can’t expect him to keep his word. He wouldn’t do it for me and —"
“He will keep his word, but I need your help. He is going to get a legal document done up about it. All the terms, if it is his.” Tony looked shocked. “I would.... really appreciate it if you would grab it from him and also make sure it’s legit. I don’t want loopholes.”
Tony ground his teeth, looking pensive. “I’m gonna regret this.”
<><><>
“And the paternity test you ordered,” the doctor said, finishing listing off the things they would be going through during the appointment.
Cecile’s head snapped to Steve, who looked unperturbed. As he should since he had called the office himself to add it to the appointment. She was unnerved. “Paternity... Steve, you said you were waiting until after the baby is born!”
“I want it done now,” he returned dryly, meeting her eyes. She opened her mouth to protest, and he told her sharply. “This isn’t a discussion, Cecile.”
Cecile reluctantly closed her mouth, and the doctor went on, acting as if nothing had happened — he was on Steve’s payroll after all —, “It takes ten to fourteen days for results, Mr. Rogers. But I’ll make sure it’s done in ten for you.”
“I’m aware. And thank you for that,” Steve responded. He tossed a look at Cecile, finding her looking down at her stomach, gripping it possessively. He felt sick satisfaction seeing the worry etched in her features. He loved her so damn much and for the first time in a while, he felt like he had control over her again.
<><><>
You were sitting in one of the patio chairs, sunglasses on, relaxing in the early spring weather. It was still chilly, so you had a sweater on, but you were content.
Your phone drug you from your thoughts and you turned your head to look over at the small table beside your chair. Your stomach clenched seeing that Steve was calling. This was it. You shot a look back inside, seeing Tony snoozing on the couch with Luna. You got up quickly and closed the patio door before answering the phone with a quick hello.
“It’s not mine,” Steve greeted you.

All Over Again - Chapter 9
Summary: What was lost can be found.
Warning: 18+ Smut, Language, Violence.
Ch. 8
* * * * * *
Each step against the pavement accompanies a quick exhale. The surrounding trees blur by, one single focus in mind.
The compound comes back into view after the last turn. A group of agents, led by Steve, jogging by.
The blonde man nods in passing, then quickly focusing back on the trainee group, and directing them down the path you’d just taken.
You stop just outside the compound doors, the glass giving clear view of the very reason you have been avoiding the compound for the past three days.
New Years day had hit you hard in more ways than one. Saying goodbye to Lena always sucked, with the turn your relationship took though, it was even worse. While you knew it wasn’t goodbye forever, you still held her in your arms for as long as you could.
That sucky feeling amplified the moment you stepped foot back into the compound.
Spending half your time with Lena and the other half working meant little time to address what happened the night before Christmas Eve. Apparently though Natasha had had enough of your avoidance and waited up for you on New Years.
Your ex-girlfriend was incredibly adamant on reassuring you that she had no idea that was going to happen and asked a hundred and one questions about how you felt and if you were okay and so on.
At the time you had no answer, then again, you don’t know if you have one now. Not that it matters, since Natasha notices you enter and part of what’s about to come is expected.
She freezes for a split second and then eases out from her place between Bruce and the wall. The big green man frowns, smile slipping away as he eyes Natasha. Being trained as she is makes it easy for her to pull a mask of contentment and even easier to slip away from him and follow you down the hall with no questions asked.
“Y/n,” She calls. Light but quick footsteps sounding.
Not looking back, you open your bedroom door and step in, knowing Natasha comes in behind you. A heavy sigh wracks your body,“ I still don’t have any answers for you Romanoff.”
She doesn’t miss a beat, quickly retorting,“ back to last names huh? Just a week ago you called me Tash?”
“Yeah well you weren’t engaged when I did that.”
The comment is made without thought. Anger forming in an unexpected way.
Conflicting emotions rise inside Natasha and present themselves as a frown. She’s glad it seems you’ve figured out how you feel. But also anxious beyond belief about this reaction.
“So you do know how you feel.”
You sigh, shoulder’s dropping,“ no I don’t and honestly I don’t know why it matters so much.”
She steps further in, green eyes damn near burning your profile,“ because I feel like this is going to make me lose you. . . again.”
“It won’t.”
Your words aren’t as convincing as you’d like them to be. It’s your way of brushing Natasha off and she knows it.
Her hand falters as she reaches for your shoulder, then she pushes aside that hesitance, and rests it there,“ we both know that’s not true.” She squeezes a bit,“ there was a time when you promised me nothing but honesty.”
She watches as your head rises, gaze fixed outside the window as you gather your thoughts. You then shrug her hand away, and finally turn to face her,“ look Natasha,” her eyebrows raise as e/c meets green,“ I can’t tell you how this makes me feel because quite frankly there are far too many emotions for me to decipher right now. I mean I just- just, came to terms with you and Bruce dating. You can’t expect me to just be fine with this so soon.”
In a split second, a literal slip up, the redhead says something she wishes she hadn’t,“ if that’s the case don’t expect me to be fine with you all of a sudden dating Lena.”
Shocked, you resist the urge to back step, only because that would cause you to fall back on the bed. With a frown you reply,“ what are you talking about all of a sudden?”
Figuring there’s no turning back now, she says,“ I mean exactly that. You go away for like three days to play devil’s advocate for Stark Industries, and when you come back you’re all about Lena who you barely know.”
“For once Natasha you have absolutely no idea what you’re talking about! Need I remind you, seeing as you didn’t know in the first place, I was in National City for two months. All of that time I spent with Lena, not to mention we kept in communication when I came back.” You are trying your damnedest to keep your upset in check but whatever this is she’s pulling, it’s pissing you off.
Her eyes roll and the single step back she takes makes you take a breath in,“ funny. It took you nearly seven years to even consider dating me.”
The look of absolute bewilderment on your face would be laughable under any other circumstance. Wide eyed, your hands raise to press against the sides of your head,“ wh- I- where the hell is all this coming from Natasha?! Genuinely what is the point of any of this! I’m sorry that I don’t have all the answers to your questions. I’m sorry that I can’t exactly come to terms with your engagement just yet but I would never do this to you.”
“Y/n I-”
“No Natasha I told you the first time you asked me that I just needed time and you haven’t given me that. And now you’re taking shots at my relationship.” With a heavy sigh, you push a hand up through your hair,“ I. Need. Time. And if I don’t get that then this friendship or whatever it is, won’t continue.”
Having said that, you brush past the redhead, and leave your own room.
Thoughts speed through your mind like the goddamn Flash and it gives you the worst headache.
Out of all the ways that little interaction could’ve gone that wasn’t what you were expecting. Honestly, you hated having to say that but you meant it. There’s only so much pushing you can take from her, especially on this topic.
The fact that things had seemingly just fallen into place made this all the more sucky and you wish more than anything that you could either fix it all or get away.
“Y/n! How was your-”
Wanda’s words are cut short when you throw your arms around her in a tight hug.
The younger woman makes it a point to avoid reading your thoughts, or anyone else’s, without explicit consent. But your thoughts are so loud she hears them without even trying. She feels the waves of emotions crashing over you: confusion, anger, regret, hurt. All of it no doubt the reason you’re seeking comfort from her right now.
Carefully, she takes hold of your waist and turns you so that you’re both in the room, before closing the door, and reciprocating the hug.
“Everything’s gonna be okay Y/n,” she squeezes you a little,“ even if it may not seem like it right now.”
A shaky breath fans across her neck and she prays to god you don’t start crying cause then she’ll start crying and usually when that starts it takes a minute to stop.
Somehow, through immense frustration, you manage to withhold your tears. It’s not so subtle, as deep breaths and slight squeeze to Wanda’s shoulders clue her in to your restraint. But she just let’s what you’re doing play out, only moving when her legs start to grow tired.
The witch eases you both on to the bed, maintaining her hold on you, and sporadically whispering a reassurance.
Neither of you pay much attention to how long you’re there but being in the woman’s presence and on the receiving end of her comfort helps a lot. When you do move it’s cause you’d rather not be the reason Wanda’s entire left side goes numb.
Luckily, since she’d heard your thoughts, that clear to you by the feeling of her presence in your mind, you don’t have to say anything about what happened. Nor do you have to express how you feel, but it comes anyway.
Pushing yourself up, you rest against the headboard and look down at your fingers.
“Sorry for-”
“No.” Wanda’s hand quickly grabs yours and squeezes,“ don’t apologize. I’m always going to be here for you, no questions asked.”
You look at her for a moment, the younger woman smiling softly at you. Then you scoot down a bit to rest your head on her shoulder.“ Natasha won’t stop pressuring me. And then had the audacity, after I told her I needed time to get used to it, she started talking about my relationship with Lena. Like. . . things aren’t all of sudden. Right?” You find yourself frowning, a very miniscule bit of doubt rising in you.
Wanda sighs,“ come on Y/n. Don’t let this disagreement make you question things. I’ve seen you with Lena, it’s real. Something like that doesn’t depend on time. I wouldn't've been surprised if you came back the first time saying you were dating.”
A soft chuckle falls from your lips at her words.
Genuinely had your mind and heart not been so caught up on Natasha at the time you could see things between you and Lena happening faster. The woman is so incredible, which you knew from the very start.
Your best friend’s hand rises to your head and fingers run through your hair.“ You gonna be okay?”
“Yeah of course. Just, this sucks. It seemed like everything was perfect.”
Refraining from scoffing, Wanda just shakes her head,“ well honey I hate to tell you but nothing’s perfect.”
A snort of a laugh leaves your lips at her term of endearment and she smiles brightly at being the cause of your partly lifted spirit. Why it caused you to laugh so hard you don’t know but it felt good to after everything that just happened.
When you finally settle with a deep breath, Wanda raises her eyebrows,“ what’re you gonna do?”
You shrug.
“If you need a break I’m sure Lena would love to have you again.” She points out, nudging you with her elbow playfully.
With a sigh, you shake your head,“ as much as I would absolutely love to go see her, I can’t. One: she literally just left three hours ago and two: we have a mission to prep for. Cap said it’s priority so I can’t reassign.”
“Right.” She nods along, remembering.
Silence creeps in and you both take it in. Wanda’s fingers continue to run through your hair and you absentmindedly pick at the fringe of her cardigan. This very position is where you stay for the next hour or two, conversation rising and falling about everything and nothing. Wanda ensures that she doesn’t mention Natasha or the situation at all. Which you’re grateful for.
While the younger woman hates that you’re having to deal with this, she’s also glad to be spending some time with you.
It’s not as though you’d neglected your friendship or anything, but with all your back and forth from NYC to NC, the amount of time you spent together was nearly cut in half. So when you end up turning the night into an impromptu sleepover there’s a smile all over her face. And it carried into the next morning where she gets to watch you make crepes for breakfast, the whole time spent joking around and singing Hamilton songs(yes she’s been learning the lyrics, especially to her favorites).
The day is spent goofing off until you have to go train and then go over mission info. There was still a lot of information to be collected but that was for Bucky and Steve to worry about so after the meeting, alongside avoiding Natasha entirely, you go back to your room.
Lying back on the bed, you pick up your phone to find the numerous messages from Lena and her friends, mainly Kara and Winn.
An instant smile plays on your lips at the CEO’s text. In an instant you ask if she’s busy and the moment she says no you’re calling.
“Hi.”
Just the sound of her voice alone makes you sigh.“ I miss you too much. I’m getting on a plane. I’ll be there tomorrow.”
Her giggle sounds, racing straight from your ear to your heart, causing it to speed up in an all too familiar way. A way only Lena could make it race.
“I’ll send the jet immediately.” She says in turn, both of you now laughing. Then ending with sighs, yours slightly heavier, which Lena picks up on.
She could hear in your voice the second you spoke that something, whatever it was, wasn’t right. So she asks.“ Is everything okay love?”
Another chuckle comes from you, this time humorless,“ am I that easy to read?”
“No I just know you enough to tell when somethings the matter.”
Little does she know her words make a new annoyance rise in you. Annoyance at Natasha for even having said what she did and annoyance at yourself for doubting for even a second.
Your girlfriend gets more and more worried as the seconds pass. You can’t even see the way her hand rests gently against her desk as if she were resting it over your hand. She wants nothing more than to be there for you, physically. That isn’t an option though.
She settles for saying,“ Y/n you know you can tell me anything.”
Which you do know is true. It’s why you tell her, at least a summary, of what happened with Natasha. Lena’s calm response is slightly surprising. Then again you have a much deeper reason to be upset at Natasha than you.
“Well I imagine it must be pretty hard for both of you.”
Your eyebrows raise,“ uh- what?”
Lena chuckles softly,“ Y/n there’s a lot between the two of you, relationship and break up wise, stuff I’m sure you haven’t even told me. And I’m not excusing what she said by any means,” her tone takes just a bit of a hard tone when she says that then softens again,“ but neither of you should be expecting the other to be okay with everything.”
Taking a deep breath, you pause, and release loudly,“ is this what it’s like dating a genius.”
“Of course it is.” Her voice inflates a bit jokingly,“ Infinite wisdom is all I can provide.”
“I’m sure that’s not true. You have much more to offer Miss Luthor.” You’re quick to tell her, meaning it more than she could ever know.
Quiet passes over for a moment, near silent breaths sounding before Lena speaks. Her words having not been heard since that first time on New Year's Eve.
“I love you.”
A splitting grin hits your face and you feel overly childlike when you bury your face in the pillow beside you,“ I love you too Lena.”
Sadly your conversation can’t go on, both of you being pulled away, Lena by a meeting and you by Wanda. After two quick, softly spoken goodbyes, you hang up.
The look on Wanda’s face as you both walk down the Compound’s hallways makes you raise a brow,“ what’s that look for Maximoff?”
She shrugs, looking off nonchalantly,“ I just like seeing how happy she makes you.”
“I-” heat rushes up your face,“ yeah. She does.” With a short chuckle you wrap an arm around her shoulders,“ you make me happy to Wan.”
“Oh I know.” She nods, smiling smugly.
Rolling your eyes, you both head to the common room for the usual team movie night. E/c lands on Bruce and Natasha cuddling and you look away, recalling Lena’s words and what happened earlier.
This is going to be tough on both of you. How it ends you don’t know but thinking about it is too much, so for the time being you’re going to focus on what’s most important.

(ao3) pls accept this very old mcdanno fic I never published, in which there are feelings and a kiss. also, soup snakes.
"So, Steven."
Steve smirks a little bit, leaning back against his desk like the smug asshole he is. This conversation has been a train wreck from the start.
"As I was saying before I was so rudely interrupted," Danny raises his voice for dramatic effect to accompany the accusing look he's shooting at Steve. "You and me."
"Have you ever considered that maybe I'm interrupting you because you talk in incomplete sentences when you're nervous?"
Danny glares at him and flails his hands around unhelpfully, "See, this! This is what I'm talking about!"
Steve rolls his eyes, "You weren't talking about anything Danny. We were tailing a suspect and you said, out of the blue, 'do you know what a soup snake is' and here we are.”
"This -" Danny shakes his head and runs a hand over his face, "You know, if you ever let me finish a sentence I wouldn't have to bring things up like that."
Steve grins as he watches Danny start ramping up to a full-blown rant-down (the Williams version of a meltdown). He gets up after a moment and sets a hand on the other mans shoulder, his smile a little kinder. "Hey. I'm listening."
Danny looks up at him and deflates. He brings both of his hands up to his face and groans, "Okay. Okay, so..."
He walks a few steps away from Steve and collects himself before saying, "So Gracie is reading this book, right? And it's been so long since she was excited about a book so I said sure, I'll read it with her, cause y'know, that's what you do, you read books you don't care about just to spend time with your daughter before she starts to hate you."
"Danny," Steve sighs and rests against his desk again, "Gracie could never -"
"Shut up," Danny interrupts with a flail. He's yelling with his hands. "Shut up or I'm never gonna get through this okay?"
Steve stays silent as way of answer.
It takes another few seconds before Danny says, "So this book. Some actress wrote it and she was on that show The Office."
Danny turns to look out at the rest of the squad room and runs a hand through his hair, "She's got this friend and he's - he's her ex. Best friends though, like, the kinda thing you hope for growing up.
"And Mindy - that's the actress - everybody wants to know why they're not together. So she's got this chapter in this book and she says y'know, it's weird, their relationship, but they're soup snakes."
Steve has to bite his tongue.
"And - Gracie, you know, she turns to me and she says, 'That sounds like you and Uncle Steve, Danno.'"
On instinct, Steve's body tenses up and he's got to remind himself to breathe.
"So I'm thinking you know, she's just a kid, she doesn't know things. She's smart but she doesn't, you know - she doesn't know this."
Danny lets his head fall forward so it's resting as close to his chest as it can. "Do you know what soup snakes are, Steven?"
He has to take a moment to get his voice to work before he responds, "Uh... No, afraid I don't."
Danny spins around suddenly, and gestures around, "It's from an episode apparently. The main guy, his ex comes to town and he spends the whole episode trying to explain why he doesn't have feelings for her when he clearly does and he doesn’t want to be friends with her and - it's jibberish. Makes a toddler look like a genius."
He takes a few steps closer to Steve, apparently more determined now, "And he makes this list. The number one reason on it is because they're soup snakes."
Danny pulls a piece of paper out of his pocket and pretends his hands aren't shaking. It's harder to pretend his voice isn't shaking though when he starts reading it.
"I lied to Kevin. Holly and I can never be just friends. I wrote down a list of bullet points why Holly and I should be together, and I'm going to find the perfect moment today and I am going to tell her. Number one: "Holly, you and I are soup snakes." The ... and the reason is... because... in terms of the soup, we like to- that doesn't make any sense. We're soul mates. Holly and I are soul mates."
Steve's heart is pounding in a way that it hasn't since he went through basic training and he's suddenly sweating bullets. "That's, ah..." He licks his lips and tries again, "That's a nice story, Danny."
Danny seems to ignore him, keeping his eyes on the paper, “So, there I am, sitting in my living room with my daughter, my lovely, amazing girlfriend in the kitchen and...”
He looks up at Steve finally and he looks terrified - like walking into a tunnel terrified.
“And see I’m - I’m having a crisis. Because this?” He gestures in between the two of them, “This wasn’t - it’s not -”
“Yeah,” Steve croaks out, his voice rough for a number of reasons.
Danny opens his mouth uselessly, the words on the tip of his tongue and refusing to come out.
Steve takes a step closer, well within his personal space now and swallows nervously, “It doesn’t have to be. I mean, if you...” He lets out a breath, ignoring his stuttering heart, “If you don’t -”
He’s not an idiot. Despite what Danny likes to think, he’s not a ‘neanderthal.’ He’s got feelings, lots of them, and he knows what they all mean.
He knows that he’s been in love with Danny since the day they met.
“But it is!” Danny yelps, his hands coming up to rest on the back of his head, “It already is Steven, it doesn’t matter if I -”
Steve sets a hand on his shoulder, effectively shutting him up. It doesn’t matter, not really, because the only thing he can hear is the sound of his heart racing in his ears.
“Did you break up with her?” He asks, terrified of the answer.
Danny makes a face that clearly communicates how dumb he thinks Steve is, “What, are you insane? What kind of person do you think I am, huh?? Realize I’m in love with my best friend and keep dating a perfectly nice -”
And, well, that’s enough.
Steve leans down, slamming their lips together in both an effort to shut him the hell up and finally, finally find out what kissing Danny feels like.
Danny groans into it, his hands coming up to fist Steve’s shirt.
They’ve always been a bit of a disaster together, two halves of different puzzles that shouldn’t fit, but they do, they fit so well, and kissing is no exception.
There’s a literal push and pull and before Steve realizes what’s happening, he gets pushed back into his chair. Danny’s standing there looking absolutely wrecked, the toes of their shoes knocking against each other, and Steve has never seen anything more beautiful.
“You,” Danny huffs, trying to catch his breath, and points at Steve’s chest. “Are an asshole.”
Steve squawks, his hands coming up to grab Danny’s thighs, “Me?!”
Danny glares at him, but still moves so that he’s partially on Steve’s lap.
Something fizzles out in Steve’s brain with all this physical contact and he’s expecting something, something like a kiss or frotting or - something.
Instead, Danny pinches the sensitive part of his upper arm, hard, and Steve yelps.
“Do not interrupt me when I’m talking to you,” he hisses.
“Talking at me is more like it,” Steve mumbles, unable to take his eyes off of Danny. They’re so close, they’re so fucking close, and he’s got years of pent-up frustration and theories he wants to explore.
There’s a bead of sweat rolling its way down Danny’s throat and Steve just watches it go, wonders how angry Danny would be if he leaned up and licked it right now. Probably really angry, he seems like he’s really pissed, and Steve’s not sure why.
Then again, he usually isn’t totally sure why Danny’s mad at him.
Danny’s hand grabs his chin, forcing Steve to look back up at him, “Steven.”
Steve licks his lips, his mouth feeling suddenly very dry, “Yeah?”
“We are at work,” he reminds him, his tone going a little softer.
He sounds, for lack of a better word, wrecked. He sounds like Steve feels, which is a little raw and a little off balance and -
Steve groans, his head falling forward and landing on Danny’s clavicle. Stupidly, some part of his lizard brain can only think about how good he smells.
“Yeah,” he sighs, his eyes closing. “Yeah, okay.”
Danny presses a kiss to his temple, softer than anything Steve thinks he deserves, and finally pulls away from him. Steve makes a noise of complaint at the loss of contact and it feels like his chest is going to explode with the quiet laugh from Danny it earns him.
God, he really loves him.
He watches as Danny fixes his hair, fixes his shirt, tries not to look like his whole world has been rocked in the last ten minutes.
Steve doesn’t even try to pretend he isn’t doing exactly what he’s doing.
Danny catches his eye after a moment and grins, walking around to the front of the desk.
This is the part of Danny that Steve’s always had to experience from the outside looking in, and now, he’s the center of that look and. Wow.
“Hey Danny,” he hears himself choke out right as Danny’s about to walk out of the office.
Danny turns around, the door half open, and somehow the bastard looks like he always does, like this is all normal. “Yeah?”
It takes his brain a little bit longer than normal to figure out what it was he was going to say, and when it does he wants to laugh.
“I’m gonna need that report before we leave tonight.”
Danny’s face does that thing where it scrunches up like Steve’s being the most unreasonable dictator in the world and he starts yelling (’I don’t yell at you Steven, I explain loudly’).
Because he’s an idiot, and he’s hopelessly in love with his partner, Steve just grins.
Yeah, he thinks to himself. Yeah, this could work.

Chapter 8
Touch me, take me to that other place. Teach me, I know I’m not a hopeless case.
Tumblr media
 August 2019
The alarm had become a bit of a pointless feature in the Gallagher-Adler household, certainly over the last 2 weeks or so. As Fliss headed into the final throes of her pregnancy, her sleep patterns were all over the place. So it was no surprise to Frank that he felt her climbing out of bed at little past 5 am. Blinking sleepily he made a noise of protest because, after all, it was a Saturday, and she chuckled and leaned over to gently kiss his head.
“Stay here.” she instructed, “I’ll be fine.”
He wasn’t going to listen, he really wasn’t but his eyes dropped shut of their own accord. When they opened again it was almost 10 and he gave a start, because Fliss was due to leave in little over an hour. She was off for a Pre-Baby pamper session with Verity, Roberta and Sian, which included a manicure, pedicure, haircut, facial and fuck knows what else. To be honest, Frank had zoned out when she'd reeled off the list of treatments last night over dinner and just nodded in all the right places because he wasn't interested if all truth be told. As long as she enjoyed herself. With that in mind, he jumped up and after a quick shower he headed downstairs.
“Why didn’t you wake me?” he asked as he wandered into the back of the house. Fliss, who was stood by the bay window seat, her eyes roving over the garden, didn’t answer.
“Lissy?” He spoke again and she jumped slightly and turned to face him as he chuckled and crossed the room to give her a kiss. “Sorry, didn’t mean to scare you. Where’s Mary?”
“She went up to the stables for a lesson with Joanne before it gets too hot.” She replied, taking the peck he offered with a tight smile. Her voice was flat, emotionless and her entire demeanour unnerved him a little as he prided himself on normally being able to read her very well but at that moment he really couldn’t get a lock on her at all.
“Baby, what’s wrong?”
“I had a message from Boston Police…about John.”
Frank made an angry noise in his throat “What about him?”
She looked at him and Frank felt his mind whirring about what there was left that the ass hole could possibly put her through. He was inside, for a long time and he wouldn’t be getting parole this time round either but when she answered, he hadn’t been expecting her to drop the news she did.
“He’s dead.” Fliss said flatly as she looked at Frank. His face contorted into a frown as he looked at her.
“Dead?”
She nodded “Apparently got in a fight with another prisoner and it got a bit nasty. He was stabbed and…” she swallowed “Bled out. Nothing they could do.” Frank watched her carefully as she was clearly pondering something. He wasn’t sure how she was going to be feeling here. She had been married to him after all but, well, Frank was struggling to feel anything other than a sickening sense of satisfaction. If anyone deserved to die it was that fucker.
“You ok?” he asked her as he stepped towards her and pulled her into a hug.
“Yeah. I feel nothing.” she said simply, pulling back to look at him. “Absolutely nothing. I’m not happy he’s dead but I don’t care he is, either, and I’m certainly not upset about it.” She paused, biting her lip “Does that make me a bad person?”
“Bad?” Frank spluttered “Fuck, no honey, of course not” She let out a sigh as he pressed a kiss to the top of her head as she snuggled her face into his chest.  “If you think feeling nothing makes you bad then me feeling what I do means I’m going straight to hell.” Frank moved and tilted her face to look at him with his finger a thumb gently holding her chin “He was a nasty, vile bastard Lissy, and he put you through so much, not to mention nearly fucking killing you less than a year ago. If anything you have a right to be throwing a damned party now.”
“Not sure you’d find many places with Congratulations Your Piece Of Shit, Wife-Beating Ex-Husband Is Dead banners or balloons.” she quipped.
“The internet is dark and full of terrors.” Frank smiled back and Fliss snorted at the Game of Thrones reference “Never underestimate it.”
She stayed silent for a moment before she pulled back and looked up at him. “You know what else I will never underestimate?” she asked, and Frank was pleased to note that familiar shine had returned to her face and eyes and he arched an eyebrow. “The power of a back massage.”
Frank smiled “Good job you’re heading off for one then isn’t it.”
“Hmmmm…” she teased, her hands tracing his chest through his t-shirt. “Thing is, unlike your back rubs this one won’t have a happy ending.” “It better fucking not do.” He shot back and she grinned.
“I should go get ready.”
“Ok, you want any breakfast before you go?” he asked and she smiled
“We ate, but there’s some pancakes in the oven for you, you just need to warm them up.”
He smiled “You’re too good to me.” “I know” she shrugged, standing on her toes to give him a kiss. With a chuckle he watched her leave, Thor trotting behind her before he let out a deep breath.
“Does that make me bad?”
The fact that she was even asking that, after everything, was enough of an answer in itself. Bad? There was nothing further from the truth and he hated that she had even entertained the idea. But, as Frank realised when he poured himself a coffee, now the bastard was dead, there was nothing else he could do to her. That particular shadow was now well gone.
And Frank didn’t give a shit whether being happy or, dare he say it, amused at the fact the fucker had died in prison, made him a bad person or not.
*****
An hour later Fliss was collected by Bill, the poor bloke was on drop off and pick up duty and Frank didn’t envy him dealing with all 4 of women. Out of courtesy, Frank had offered to run one way but Bill had waved his offer off, pointing out that he had to collect his mother later that afternoon from the aiport.
He walked out to the car with them, taking a side glance at his girl who was dressed in a pale pink and blue maxi dress, which was quite low cut and made her pregnancy boobs look fucking amazing. He smiled as he opened the door for her, Fliss sinking into the front seat- being basically 40 weeks pregnant and ready to pop awarded her certain perks such as her mother surrendering her usual position in the passenger side.
“Have a nice time.” He said, leaning over to give her a peck.
“We will.” She smiled “I left Mary some Mac and Cheese for lunch, she was asking before so I pulled it out of the freezer.”
Frank smiled “I’ll fight her for it.” “No need.” She grinned “I got you some out too.” “You spoil me”
Smiling, she reached up and cupped his cheek before he straightened up and shut the door. Once he was sure it was closed he jerked his head to Bill who was bent giving Thor a pat and signalled for the man to walk with him a little, taking a few steps away.
“Everything ok?” Bill asked.
“Yeah, well, sort of. She’s probably gonna tell you herself but just in case she doesn’t, she had a call this morning. John’s dead.” Bill blinked, before he gave a snort “Good.” “Yeah, that was kind of my reaction too.” Frank scratched at his neck. “Fliss, however, well she says she didn’t feel anything. Not happy, not sad, just complete indifference. Which, to be fair, is probably a good thing for her. I’m just a little worried she’s numb because it hasn’t sunk in yet.” Bill nodded “If she doesn’t mention it herself on the way I’ll tell V on the quiet when we get there.” “Thanks.”  Frank smiled as the two of them headed back to the car. Frank grinned at Bill, as he could hear the chatter from the 4 women even through the closed doors and windows of the car.
“Good luck!” he said, nodding towards the vehicle.
Bill snorted before he frowned a little “How come you haven’t gone with Steve and the boys up to the Water Sports centre?” “Mary didn’t want to.” Frank said “I think she’s still a little, self-conscious, I suppose is the term, around the twins but she’ll come round. You know what she’s like” “Well, when they move over in January she’ll have plenty of time to get to know them properly” Bill shrugged “Right, best get this rabble to the hotel. See you later son.” Frank smiled, nodding at him. As the Range Rover pulled off up the drive he tossed a hand at the tailgate before he looked down at Thor.
“Come on boy, let’s go find Mary.” It didn’t take them long to locate her. Having finished her lesson she’d been busy grooming Monty and then helping Joanne with a few chores, or bugging the shit out of her Frank suspected but Joanne was always so patient with her. The young woman was god-send, having really stepped up over the last 2 months especially. Frank knew why Fliss liked her so much.
He practically dragged Mary home, but it really was getting ridiculously warm and he wanted her to have a few hours inside to keep cool a little. In the end, as always, they haggled reaching a compromise that she could have a little while in the pool provided she sat in the shade quietly to eat lunch. As always he was roped into the pool with her, such a hard life he led, and after 30 minutes of teaching her how to dive they both climbed out and ate before changing and heading to the airport to collect Evelyn who was coming to stay for a while.
He greeted her with the usual nod and smile as Mary gave her a hug, before he took her bag from her and they headed back to his truck, Mary gibbering on about anything and everything, his mother listening and replying when needed. The last time Mary had seen Evelyn she had gone to Boston for the weekend the previous month, something that had set Frank on edge after the last time, but as Fliss had reasoned with him, he knew that he couldn’t allow that to stop him from letting her go. This meant that Evelyn hadn’t seen their house since they had moved in back in June. Mary showed her round, Frank following, and when they got to Bean’s room he saw her stop and look round, smiling softly.
“You’ve done a good job, Frank.” She turned to look at him and he smiled back.
“You sound surprised, mother.” “Not at all.” She shook her head. “I expected nothing less.” “Makes a change.” He couldn’t help the sarcastic shot back and she narrowed her eyes.
“Are we not passed the sniping yet?” she said, tiredly.
Frank held his hands up, “Sorry.” After she’d seen the attic and Mary’s room, they headed back downstairs, Frank showing Evelyn to the Guest Apartment over the Garage which he had put the finishing touches to the week before. Fliss had stocked the fridge fully for her, meaning she had everything she could need for snacks and drinks, and whatever else she needed for a comfortable stay. He left her to unpack, telling her to come over to the main house when she was done, which she did a little over an hour later.
Frank poured her a glass of white wine, and they headed outside, taking a seat at the table as Mary was in and out of the pool freely as the sun wasn’t quite as high as it had been given that it was half four in the afternoon. Evelyn took the opportunity to ask Frank if they were ready for Bean to arrive and he smiled, shrugging.
“As ready as we can be.” He said, “We’ve had all the hospital tours and found the place Fliss prefers so…” “Where have you chosen?” Evelyn asked.
“Bayfront in St Pete’s” Frank said, pulling out his phone “They have a suite called the Baby Place.”
He flicked through his phone’s internet browser to the bookmarked page and handed it to Evelyn who put on her glasses to scan the information.
"The separate family lounge offers some of the amenities of home, such as a game table, bla bla bla and room enough to host celebrations and enjoy time with loved ones." Evelyn read from the website. "It looks like a hotel not a hospital" she mused as she handed the phone back to Frank. "Well, that's kinda the idea mother." He said, tossing his phone onto the table. "It’s actually a state-approved level 3 Regional Perinatal Intensive Care Centre." Mary appeared at the side of them, picking up her towel. "The program is one of only 12 in the state of Florida" Evelyn looked at her, cooking her head to one side as Frank gave a chuckle. "There is that too." He said as Evelyn turned to him. Mary, wrapped herself in the towel and hopped up onto his knee. "We originally discussed a birthing centre with the midwife but Fliss was too worried about what could go wrong or if she decided half way through she wanted an epidural..." he rubbed at Mary’s shoulders slightly, drying her off with the towel. “So when the midwife suggested this it seemed like a perfect compromise. She gets a private recovery area and should make her feel more at ease. She doesn't have fond memories of hospitals." He shrugged "Who does?" Evelyn looked at him, taking a sip of her wine. "Well Fliss has some particularly bad ones what with her back injury and operation, not to mention all the times he put her in one." Frank said, pausing for a second. That reminded him.
“Hey Stack, can you go grab me a can of soda?”
“Only if I can have one.” She bargained.
“Fine, but grab the no sugar. You’re already hyper enough as it is.”
Mary jumped down and headed through the door into the kitchen. As soon as she was out of earshot Frank looked at his mother.
“John’s dead.” He said bluntly “Fliss had a call this morning. He was stabbed in prison.” Evelyn looked at him for a second, before she gave a snort “Couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy.” She said sarcastically “How has Fliss taken it?”
“Well she wasn’t leaping for joy but she’s not upset, says she feels nothing.” He shrugged, looking up as Mary came back. She handed him a can as she hopped back on his knee and opened the other one herself.
Evelyn studied Frank for a second as if she was considering something before she smiled "I take it the fact she's due to drop tomorrow is the reason you're on soft drinks and not beer." Frank smiled "Just playing it safe. I mean so are you right? That's why you're here for the next 2 weeks." Evelyn shrugged "is it a problem?" "No." Frank shook his head before he grinned cheekily "Why do you think I finished the apartment above the Garage?" "Bill says in England they would call it a Granny Flat" Mary said as Frank gave a snort. Evelyn chuckled a little. "I’m aware of the terminology, thank you, on account of being from England myself." She looked at Mary "You know, people build them on their property when they want their elderly relatives to move in with them so they can look after them." she turned to Frank, smirking "So I'm honoured, Francis..." "I didn't build it just for you." He rolled his eyes "it was half done when we moved in so it made sense to finish it." He picked up his can "It’s a place for anyone to stay, although I'd be lying if I said you weren't at the forefront of my mind when we did it" Evelyn looked at him, shocked, "me?" "Yeah..." he shrugged, grinning "Fliss told me that I wasn't allowed to let you stay in a hotel or at Bill and V's now we have room so this was the best way of actually keeping you out of the house..." "Oh piss off!" Evelyn looked at him, slapping his arm as he laughed. She shook her head and before she could shoot a sarcastic response back, the sound of an engine coming up the drive hit Frank’s ears and a soft smile crept across his face. His girl was home. Thor gave a loud bark and stood up, running to the gate, Frank following him. He opened it, striding out onto the path through the lawn which led round the side of their house to the front. He smiled as Fliss pushed herself out of her dad's range rover and he instantly spotted that her hair was a lighter colour than it had been that morning and was flowing round her face and shoulders in perfectly styled waves. It was evident she had enjoyed herself, as she looked relaxed for the first time in weeks. "Well I would ask if you had a nice time." He smiled, dropping a kiss to her cheek "but I can tell from the way you're grinning that you did." "Oh it was amazing." She smiled as his hands fell to her hips. “Just what I needed. I feel relaxed and absolutely ready to push a baby out of my vagina.” Frank gave a loud laugh as he shook his head. “Well, your hair looks great." "Aww thanks Frank." Roberta slapped his shoulder as she walked past him into the yard. He rolled his eyes as Fliss laughed, tugging on Frank’s hand as she led him to the trunk of Bill's car. Bill was stood with it open as Verity and Sian were looking in each of the bags before Verity pointed at one and handed it to Fliss, Frank immediately taking it from her. He peered inside.
"Because you don't have enough toiletries" he deadpanned. Fliss shrugged. "The lavender stuff they said would help me sleep, which in case you haven't noticed I've been struggling to do over the last 2 weeks." "Hard not to notice when you wake me up at 3:30 am to tell me" "I did that once because I felt sick. And besides, you did this to me..." she pointed to her now really rather large bump "...you should also be feeling the consequences" Bill snorted as he shut the trunk of his car and looked at Frank as he glanced at the older man, almost pleading for help "Sorry lad." Bill chuckled "You got her pregnant and wanna marry her, she's your problem now." "She is here..." Fliss glared at her father. "Oh, trust me Titch, we are all well aware you are." "Rude" Fliss looked at her parents as they headed into the garden. "Steve and the boys will be here in about 5." Sian looked at Fliss having just got off the phone to him. "Said to tell you he is picking up some real meat on the way over...whatever that means Frank?" Frank laughed "he means fillet steak. I got Sirloin. A man's cut. He's being a pussy" Sian looked at Fliss who simply shook her head. "Meat is a big issue for Francis." She said sombrely, patting his chest.
“I just know what I like.” He shrugged. They made their way through to the back in time to see Verity giving Evelyn a warm hug in greeting. It made Fliss smile softly, noticing how different it all was to the stiff handshakes shared when they met for the first time little over a year ago.
Frank dropped a kiss to her cheek and headed inside to put her bag away before he came back down just as Steve and the boys turned up. Then the usual thing that happened at BBQs went ahead, the men crowding round the grill, the women bustling in and out of the kitchen setting out the sides and accompaniments, the 3 kids bombing in and out of the pool.
“You should have come with us today Mary.” Steve said to the girl as she sauntered past in her bathing suit. She paused to look at him.
“What did you do?”
“We did Kayaking, skiing, the boys went bodyboarding but I sat that one out.” Steve said.
“I didn’t know if I would like it.” She shrugged, dropping her eyes slightly. Frank watched carefully as Steve crouched down.
“Me neither, but you know what? It was fun, and the best thing is, if there’s something you don’t wanna do, you can sit it out and watch.” Frank could see from her face she was mulling this over. She looked at Steve “Are you going again Uncle Steeby?”
“Next Friday.” He nodded.
“Ok, I wanna go next time.” She announced. “Mind your manners.” Frank instructed, gently, pointing the tongues he was holding at her.
“Please.” She added. Charlie and Joel both erupted into noise, demanding that their father allow it and Steve gave a chuckle.
“You’re welcome any time Stack, as long as Frank and Fliss say its ok.” He said, standing up. “Fine by me. In fact you can keep her if you want.” Frank shrugged and Mary rolled her eyes.
“You always say stuff like that, pretend you don’t want me here but we all know the truth. You do, that’s why you’re adopting me.”
“Smart ass.” Frank narrowed his eyes at her as she stuck her tongue out and ran off. Bill and Steve chuckled as Frank shook his head, snorting.
“Thanks Steve.” He looked at the man who waved his thanks away.
“You know, she’s getting more like Fliss was every day.” Bill said “you want to watch that, Frank. She was a sassy little swine as a kid.” “Mary was already a sass bag before she met Fliss.” Frank shrugged, turning over the steaks on the grill. “Lissy just encourages it.” “Have you had any luck with her biological father?” Steve asked and Frank shook his head.
“We’re not expecting to yet. We’ve only given him notification of our intent. I suspect when Greg actually starts the process officially we’ll hear something.”
“But you don’t expect him to object?”
Frank hesitated before he shrugged “I can’t see why he would. He’s never been interested in her, at all. I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t a slight worry but like Fliss keeps telling me, we’ll cross that bridge when we get there.” “No point worrying about something you can’t control.” Bill said wisely, before he drained his beer “Right, I need another drink. Anyone else want one?”
“Yeah, I’ll come with you” Steve said “Frank?”
“I’m good, thanks.” “You can have one or two, surely?” Steve looked at him.
“Leave him alone.” Bill said, shoving his son on the shoulder, “That’s your sister and my little girl he’s looking out for…” “Fuckin’ pussy…” Steve snorted playfully and Frank threw the burger flipper at him.
Bill and Steve walked away, playfully squabbling and a few seconds later Frank felt a familiar pair of arms wrap around him from behind, Fliss pressing her lips to the space between his shoulder blades.
“Hey gorgeous.” He said, moving so she could slide under his arm. He pressed a kiss to her head “You ok?”
“Yeah, fine.” She smiled, looking up at him. “You know I really do I love your hair." He said, taking in the lighter colour even more in the now closing light of day. Over the past two years, her vivid auburn had gradually tone down and was now a light brown, laced with copper and blonde.
“Thanks.” She said, a little shyly and Frank frowned.
“Don’t you like it?”
“No, I love it…it’s just, well, actually it doesn’t matter.” “Lissy.” He looked at her sternly, and she sighed, her hands worrying one another so Frank put the cooking utensils down and took them in his. “Tell me what’s going on.” “John hated me changing it.” She shrugged “Which is why I went so bright red in the first place. Once I left him I just fancied doing something wild. I’ve always liked it a bit lighter. He insisted I kept it dark…”
“Well you can do what the fuck you want with it.” He assured her, “Unless you want to shave it all off. Then I might raise some objections.” “Sorry. She said gently and he frowned.
“What for?” “Raising him again” she shrugged “We’ve been together almost 2 years now and…” “Hey.” He said, “Don’t ever apologise. I’d rather you tell me when you’re feeling like this. You know that.”
“Of course I do, I just wonder sometimes if it’s ever gonna stop.”
“So what if it doesn’t?” Frank looked at her. She blinked and he shrugged “I’ve told you, you can always talk to me. Nothing you say is gonna make me mad.”
She smiled at him as he dropped his head, gently giving her a peck. “I know, I just get fed up sometimes. Stupid little memories and flashbacks.” “I know.” He smiled at her, kissing her head softly “But they don’t rule your life anymore, not like they used to. They’re just…”he hesitated “A minor annoyance, a bit like him really, insignificant.”
“He’s even more insignificant now.” She grinned “He’s fucking dead.”
At that Frank let out a snort “I take it you’re not longer feeling numb then.”
She shrugged “Mum said exactly the same as you before, that we should be throwing a party so…”
Frank chuckled again, pulling her into him even further as he turned back to the grill.

Despite it being her due date the following day there was no sign of Bean. And he didn’t make an appearance on the Monday either. On Tuesday they headed in for an assessment at the hospital, and after an examination the Midwife smiled at Fliss as she lay on the bed.
"Well, Miss Gallagher... he is in the right position." The midwife smiled. “Dropped and ready.” "He needs to hurry up." Fliss grumbled "He was due two days ago.” "Your due date is never exact. I wouldn't worry. His heartbeat is strong, he'll arrive when he is ready." "Already taking after his father." Fliss shot a side glance at Frank who raised an eyebrow. "Ok so if there's no sign of him by the morning of the 28th then just call" the woman said and Frank bit back a smirk at the look of utter disgust on Fliss' face "We'll check everything and do a sweep to get things moving." "Is there anything we can do?" Fliss practically whined "Spicy food? Pineapple? Speed bumps?" The Midwife laughed "I'm afraid they're only old wives tales. The only one with a shred of credibility is sex." Frank grinned and Fliss shot him a glare. "Semen contains prostaglandins" the midwife shot Fliss a wink "It can trigger the release of oxytocin which is a hormone that can help contractions." At that it was Fliss' turn to grin. "So all I need is your sperm and a turkey baster Sailor. Unlucky." Frank rolled his eyes and mentally cursed the midwife for her damned scientific explanation. "But in essence if your body isn’t ready to labour, nothing you do will necessarily get you going." She smiled "Sorry, you're just gonna have to ride it out." Despite the joking there was no activity in the bedroom that night other than a lot of tossing and turning as Fliss was really struggling to get comfortable enough to sleep. Frank hated seeing her so tired and fed up but when at 3:30 am he sleepily asked her if she needed anything she simply asked for a cuddle which he was more than happy to provide.
“I’m sorry.” She mumbled.
“What for?”
“I know I've been a pain these last 2 weeks.”
“You’re heavily pregnant and fed up.” He said, kissing her head
“I wouldn't be able to do this alone. I don't know how my mum did.” She said softly. Frank sighed and pulled her closer, remembering how upset she had been a week or so back when their conversation one evening with Mary had turned to Frank telling her how he had been with Diane when she was born. Hormones be damned, it had set Fliss off about how nice it was that Frank had been there and stood by Diane and how she wished her own mom had that, but instead Verity’s parents had kicked her out and left her alone and pregnant at the age of 19.
Frank knew Verity had been young when she had Fliss, although he had never expressly asked he had worked it out from the fact she was 9 years Bill's junior. He also knew there was a lot of bad blood on that side of the family and that Fliss had never met her maternal grandparents, even when they reached out to her later down the line. She had rather impolitely told them to fuck off, Verity doing the same. When asked by Mary why she hadn’t forgiven them as they were family, Fliss had shrugged and simply replied that family isn't and never would be about blood, but instead it was about those people who saw you at your absolute worst and wanted you just the same. "You've nothing to be sorry for.” Frank gently soothed her, “And you're not on your own. You never will be." "I know." She looked up at him, smiling as he gave her a soft kiss.
Things continued much the same for the rest of the week. Every so often Fliss would get a twinge, and the pair of them would get excited, thinking this was it, only for nothing to happen. On the Friday, almost a week post her due date, Frank called the midwife who arranged for them to come in the next morning. Evelyn, who was being particularly helpful, even if Frank was loath to admit it cooked for them all that night, but Fliss had struggled to eat her meal, declaring she felt a bit sick. After a profound apology to Evelyn she announced she was heading for a bath and then going to bed.
“Do you want me to come with you?” Frank asked and Fliss shook her head.
“It’s not even 7. I might be back down in an hour or so if I feel better.” “Ok, can you manage-“
“Frank!” she said, exasperatedly. “I’m fine.” “Well, you’re-“ he began and Evelyn laid her hand on his arm and shook her head gently. For the first time in, well, as long as he could remember, he obeyed an order from his mother and stopped. “Alright. Just shout me then if you need anything.”
She gave him a kiss on his cheek, her way of apology for snapping and headed off.
“You won’t need that appointment tomorrow.” Evelyn said after a pause and Frank turned to her.
“What makes you say that?” “Because I felt the same the day before I went into labour with you.” Evelyn said “Queasy, tired, just generally off.” “Well, I hope you’re right because she’s fed up.” Frank sighed “He’s fully cooked now, just being a stubborn little bastard.”
“What was it you once said to me about an apple and a tree analogy?” she looked at him, arching an eyebrow and Frank snorted.
“Yeah ok, you got me there” he conceded.
Fliss didn’t come back down after her bath. Frank popped in on her a few times and she was simply led in bed, trying to get comfortable, tearfully complaining that her back ache was particularly bad. Frank led besides her for half an hour or so, gently working at the lower part of her spine that was giving her the trouble before he realised she’d fallen asleep. He left her to it, heading back down to his mother and Mary, before a few hours later, just before 10, they all decided to go to bed as it had been a long day. Fliss didn’t wake up when he slid in besides her, nor when he dropped a kiss to her cheek. He watched her for a moment as she lay, facing him, before he too closed his eyes.
***** His baby was sat on his knee, grinning up at him. He smiled down at the boy, whose hands were wrapped tight around his index fingers. He glanced up, looking around for Fliss but there was no sign of her. Nor Mary for that matter. Hoisting Alex up onto his hip he headed out to the garden and gave a start as he saw both Fliss and Mary floating face down in the pool.
“No, no…” he began to mutter, before his muttering became frantic yells “No, this…not my girls…not…”
With a start, Frank sat bold upright in bed, breathing deeply. He glanced at the clock on the side which read 23:30, damned he hadn’t even been asleep an hour! What the fuck…
He wiped his clammy brow and lay back, feeling Fliss stir besides him.
“Frank?” she asked softly, “Are you ok?” “Bad dream.” He mumbled, turning onto his side and sliding his arm under her neck, pulling her back into his chest.
“You wanna talk about it?” she asked.
He shook his head with the air of a small child, pressing his nose into her neck, breathing in her smell and comfort. As he nuzzled at her, he felt her sigh a little and push back further into him.
“Stop it.” She muttered.
“Stop what?” he asked.
“That, on my neck…”
“Why?” He teased, his nose being replaced by his lips as he gently trailed open mouthed kisses up to her ear.
“You know why…”
“You ready to try what the midwife suggested?” he grinned, his mouth nipping at her ear and she gave a laugh.
“I'm willing to try anything. Just make it quick, I’m not bothered about coming. I only need your sperm.” “Charming…” he snorted as she gave a soft chuckle. His hand that had been resting on her bump softly moved down a little as he shifted, snaking his leg in between hers, opening her up slightly. He hooked her leg up over his hip, his fingers softly trailing up her bare thigh, shifting her sleep shorts to one side as he slipped his hand gently into her folds. She bucked harshly.
“Easy baby.” he muttered.
“Can’t help it.” she let out a soft sigh “Sensitive…” With a smile, he used his other hand to tip her head round so he could catch her mouth with his own, kissing her gently, his tongue softly sliding against hers, swallowing the moans and groans she was eliciting as he worked her with his hand. Had she been a little more with it, she might have been slightly embarrassed at how pathetically short a period of time it was before he had her clamping down around his fingers, shuddering as her release washed over her, but she was too gone to care. She’d hardly even come down from her orgasm when Frank eased her shorts down, then his boxers and with a gently push forward slid into her, the pair of them letting out hushed sighs as he began to slowly slide in and out of her. There was no haste to his movements, no rush, nothing, it was gentle, sweet, loving as he kept her held close to him, his lips lavishing affection on her shoulders and neck. Before long he heard and felt he breathing falling into that tell-tale staccato panting and she let out a low, quiet but downright filthy noise from her throat and Frank’s lips curved into a grin against her neck.
“Come on beautiful…” he mumbled, the heat in his own belly was sending spikes of fire up and down his body as he fought to keep control for a little longer “Come on.” And she did, her head tipped back and with a stuttering whisper of his name he felt her tighten around him, her legs quivering as he himself came, his hips slowing to a stop as he gently bit down on her shoulder. The pair of them lay still for a while, his hand softly curving up and around her bump, over her hip, down her thigh and back again, gently repeating the motion.
“You ok?” he asked and she nodded, humming in contentment. He pulled out of her, righted their items of clothing as Fliss hardly moved. He kept her pressed close to him as he closed his eyes, drifting off again.
He was woken 3 hours later, just before 4 am by Fliss shaking his arm.
“Frank…”
He groaned but didn’t open his eyes.
“Frank…Bean…I think he’s on his way…”
He let out a grin and turned over “My sperms worked then…” he mumbled into the pillow.
Fliss looked at him, waiting for the moment her words registered in his sleep-addled brain, which happened roughly 10 or so seconds later when he suddenly sat straight up, turning to face her.
“Penny dropped?” she asked arching an eyebrow.
He blinked “He’s…” She nodded, “Yeah…” He blinked again before he swallowed, and with a grin stuttered out a single word.
“Shit!”

Fateful Friends
The surprise part 2 of my Steggy Secret Santa gift for the very cool @sagesiren/@theeleganteuropeanwoman - a Peggy POV modern AU avec Bucky and Angie because they wouldn’t allow me to fit them in last time. A somewhat belated Chanukah gift for you - or I guess a very early one for next year?
Summary: An afternoon of helping out Angie leads Peggy to a chance encounter.
Read on AO3

“Carter,” Angie says, tapping a finger against her wrist even though she isn’t wearing a watch. “I love you, and it’s because I love you that I don’t mind telling you that you’re a big liar. You promised 11:30.”
Peggy sighs but saves the document she had been working on. Angie is right. Peggy had said they would leave at 11:30 and it’s already 12:15.
“We can stop at the bakery on the way,” Peggy offers, swiveling her chair around to reach for her purse and coat. “My treat to make up for delaying us.”
“Perfect,” Angie says brightly. She’s a bit flushed: she had refused to remove her parka since she got here nearly an hour ago as a pointed reminder that Peggy had promised only five more minutes, though she had unzipped it after about a quarter of an hour, and she’s also wearing a beret she keeps adjusting even as she insists that it makes her outfit. Still, she hops to her feet readily, hooking her arm with Peggy’s. “And this won’t be a drag, I swear. Just a girl’s day out, the two of us on the town, cleaning out my dead grandmom’s place.” She considers as they stop in the doorway to let Peggy flip off her office lights. “Okay, maybe we’d better get extra of the lemon pound cake to keep things fun.”
Peggy sighs. “Lead the way.”

There had been a bit of extortion involved in the whole business. Six months ago, Peggy had agreed to allow Angie to start setting her up. But after multiple mediocre dates (and one which ended in a well-deserved black eye for the man in question) she had begged off and refused to be convinced otherwise, even when Angie complained that this would ruin her credibility as a romance columnist and swore over and over that she had actually found the absolute perfect guy this time, the one Peggy would truly regret not meeting.
It isn’t that Peggy doesn’t want a relationship. She isn’t being too picky, and she hasn’t decided that her career should be her focus just now. But planning, the precise thing which has served her well her entire life in so many areas, seems to have failed her now. Online dating, singles mixers, allowing herself to be set up by friends, all the tried and tested strategies - nothing has led her to anyone she would even consider as a lifetime companion, and just this once, she has decided that she will leave things up to chance.
Standing firm on the dating question, however, apparently meant that Peggy was required to join Angie whenever requested and to do whatever favors she required in exchange for reneging on their original agreement.
In the end, though, spending a Saturday with her best friend is always enjoyable, even if they’re sorting the belongings of a recently deceased ninety-eight year old woman who Angie refers to as “the old bat.” They try to one up each other for the oddest item found in their cleaning, and eat their way through altogether too many pastries. As they trade off picking playlists, Angie even provokes Peggy’s competitive spirit enough that they both end up showing off their dance moves.
After eight hours of work, Angie decides that they have done enough for one day, even though they’re nowhere close to finished.
“Sixty years of crap isn’t going to shift itself in one try,” she shrugs cheerfully, searching within one of the scattered “keep” boxes for her other glove. “And I was forced to do all this out of oldest granddaughter sexism. I’ll come back next week and make my cousins help.”
Peggy laughs, retrieving the missing glove from beneath the once-fancy living room settee. The two of them gather the rest of their belongings, making certain the lights are turned out before they weave around the boxes to get to the front door.
On the threshold, Angie digs for the keys to lock up the brownstone, a beautiful Brooklyn property which her family couldn’t have bought with the help of a fairy godmother if they had wanted to try today. Peggy breathes in the sharp cold of the night air, turns to comment on it to her friend, then spins immediately back around as a snowball whizzes past her ear and explodes on the façade of the house just beside her.
A man’s voice from somewhere out on the darkened street shouts, “Bucky, what the—” Cutting himself off before actually verbalizing whatever curse he clearly wants to, the man changes tone, calling, “Peppermint hot chocolate for anyone who hits Bucky in the next five minutes.”
In the next second, the street comes so alive with childish chatter that Peggy can’t believe she didn’t notice the apparent army of little ones nearby. Over their whoops and cries, another man yells, “Not my fault that your shot went out of bounds. I just ducked - self preservation instincts, Rogers, if you’ve ever heard of them.”
Squinting into the dim streetlight, Peggy pinpoints where the second man’s voice is coming from, just as the thickly swaddled shape of him is tackled by several smaller forms and pelted with snow from all sides. Another shadow breaks away from the place on the street where last night’s half foot of snow has turned into haphazard forts on either side of a snowy battlefield, jogging toward where Peggy and Angie still stand on the steps.
“I’m sorry about the snowball attack there,” he apologizes as soon as he’s close enough. “We don’t usually drag strangers into our fights, or at least not before we’ve learned their names.”
Peggy hasn't been in a snowball fight since she was twelve - well, fourteen, if she’s being honest - declaring war on her brother Michael back at their house in Hampstead when they were both home from school for the term holiday. Perhaps she's been a bit infected by the lively afternoon or the stress of the past several weeks is finally catching up to her, but she finds herself turning and saying to a man she has never before met, "My name is Peggy Carter, and I'd be delighted to be recruited if there's room for one more, considering that hostilities have already been accidentally declared."
Apparently he didn’t expect a response like this, a strange woman deciding to take a chance. His eyes widen, but only for a moment before he says, "Well, sure, there's plenty of snow."
Glancing back at Angie, Peggy tells her, "There's no need to wait for me while I indulge myself in a bit of winter warfare, of course. Go off home and put your feet up."
But Angie instead looks delighted in a way that's almost outsized for her best friend taking her recommendation to relax a bit. "Oh, I'd never miss this," she says. "I'll just watch our things and spectate from over here." And she unhooks Peggy's purse from her shoulder and shoos her off toward the battlefield.
"Steve," the man says as they set off up the street together. "I'm Steve. Steve Rogers. By the way."
"Lovely to meet you," she says politely.
She isn't particularly prepared for this sort of activity - her boots are fairly practical for walking from apartment to subway stop to office though clearly are not meant to do much heavier lifting - but she ventures that it can be forgiven considering how spur of the moment the entire thing has been. However, Steve is not, Peggy notices, exactly dressed for the weather either. It’s a bit too cold for a waist length peacoat, thin gloves, and a loosely hanging scarf, and he seems to have half soaked through everything. When they pass under a streetlight, she looks up toward him and observes that his cheeks are flushed red, though it actually suits him quite well, making the blue of his eyes shine.
"Were you pulled into this under similar circumstances?" she asks.
He laughs a little shyly. "No, Bucky—My friend, Bucky - you'll meet him in a minute—Anyway, his mother invited a bunch of their family over for the afternoon, and between all the cousins there are a dozen kids running around these days. We just volunteered to keep them occupied."
She wants to ask exactly where he fits into the structure of his friend’s family, but they are nearing the place where the children are still shouting and pelting Steve's friend.
"I've brought someone else to even out the teams," Steve calls, and the kids leave off, coming to surround the newcomer instead.
After introductions have been made - Steve's friend Bucky gives Peggy a look which is strangely appraising but completely without objectification - Peggy is informed of the rules (no faces, no sand or rocks mixed with your projectiles, ten seconds of reprieve after you've ducked behind the walls of your team's fort) and assigned a team (Steve's, which sends a thrill running through her which she doesn't care to examine, settling for a decisive head nod and a small smile in his direction).
She had forgotten, in the years since she had last participated in a snowball fight, exactly how exhilarating it could be. Her careful plans for methodical stockpiling and adherence to ideal technique are soon thrown out the window in her haste to simply get the next missile prepared and launched at the opposition. As she and a small girl named Iris fling nearly loose snow at the other side of the street, she finds herself laughing more freely than she has in ages. At one point, she and Steve end up huddled against the wall of the fort next to each other.
"Your hands must be freezing," he comments, and when she looks down in surprise at her red fingers, she realizes that he is right. He strips off his sodden gloves and wraps his hands around hers, trying to press some heat back into them. It’s futile, considering that his hands, while larger, aren’t any warmer, but she doesn’t stop him. When he tries to pass his gloves over to her, however, she declines with a smile.
"Oh, I could never allow anything to interfere with my process."
"Right." He unwraps his scarf instead, offering it to her. "Maybe this way at least some of you will be warm, and you won’t lose your edge either."
She won't swear that it's feeling the wool still toasty from his neck which allows her to jump back into the fray with renewed vigor, but she certainly wouldn't swear otherwise.
Her watch and phone are buried within her coat, but it cannot be much later when the door to what Peggy guesses is Bucky's mother's house opens and a group of people starts to stream out, each member gravitating over to collect particular children. Peggy stands at the sidelines as Steve and Bucky are kissed on the cheeks and thanked for their babysitting efforts. Angie ambles over just as the last of the kids, little Iris, is taken off with a wave of her cheerfully red mitten.
“Enjoy yourself, English?” she calls, grinning as she picks her way down the sidewalk around the disarranged clumps of snow. “Haven’t seen you have this much fun in ages, although it’s also reminding me why I’m never playing laser tag with you again.”
“My skill doesn’t only apply to snow. I’m a bit of a laser markswoman,” Peggy tells Steve who has returned to her side, apparently having finished being showered with familial affection by Bucky’s relatives.
“Laser sharpshooter,” Angie corrects. “Laser sniper. Laser no-holds-barred, take-no-prisoners—”
“Angie?”
Bucky has joined them, looking at Angie with surprise which turns quickly into a smile and a hug.
“Bucky Barnes!” Angie says after they’ve broken away. She’s still framing him with a hand on each arm but she lets go to give him a friendly whack on the shoulder. “I should have known there couldn’t be that many Buckys in Brooklyn.” Stepping back so she can face Steve and Peggy fully, she says, “Bucky and I are...I mean, Bucky’s mom and my mom are...Well, we’re...We must be—” She glances up, clearly trying to mentally map out a family tree.
“We’re cousins, somehow,” Bucky fills in smoothly. “Just like me and half the neighborhood.”
It occurs to Peggy that the situation might be awkward - they had just seen a number of Bucky’s relations leaving a gathering to which Angie clearly hasn’t been invited - but Bucky says, without apparent unease, “I guess you’re in the area to clean out your grandma’s place?” and then adds as an afterthought, “God rest her.”
Angie rolls her eyes, though not, Peggy suspects, at Bucky’s insincere tone. “My mother kept making noises that Jersey was too far to come for just the day and couldn’t I just take care of it, so I finally gave in.” She loops her arm through Peggy’s. “Carter here has been the perfect assistant - without her, I’d have either tried to keep everything or just backed the garbage truck up to the front door and set up a funnel.”
“You’d never - you might miss out on some heirloom to hold over everyone’s heads,” Peggy says with an affectionate elbow to Angie’s side. “And I certainly had my fill of fun sorting through objects from decades gone by, along with that snowball battling which capped things off perfectly. But I think it might be time that I started making my way home.” She truly has had a wonderful afternoon, the sort which will live fondly in her memory (including the feeling of Steve’s hands wrapped with such gentle and precise strength around hers), but the idea of a steaming bath and freshly laundered pajamas sounds absolutely heavenly at the moment.
“Oh,” Steve says softly. He extends a hand. “Well, it was nice to—”
“No,” says Bucky, shaking his head, and “No!” Angie adds with hasty vehemence.
“I’m sorry?” Peggy angles herself to try to see Angie’s face, but it’s Bucky who answers.
“You’re soaking wet, and I’m guessing that you don’t live on the next block. My mother would kill me if she found out I didn’t at least give you something dry to get home in.”
“It’s a lovely offer—” Peggy starts to demur, although she is now noticing that she’s quite chilly and it is going to be a bit of a slog home. Before she can get any farther, however, the door to Bucky’s family home opens up and a woman stands silhouetted in the spilling light.
“James Buchanan Barnes, I hope that you weren’t thinking of leaving these two young ladies out here in the cold without inviting them in to warm up.” She walks carefully down the steps, arms crossed over her chest, but she throws them open as she spots who is standing there. “Angie Martinelli, is that you? Wonderful to see you, sweetheart, come here!”
Angie releases Peggy to submit to a hug and a rapid-fire back and forth of greeting. Peggy suspects that their chances of making a smooth escape have just decreased rather dramatically.
“I’ve known Mrs. Barnes all my life,” Steve says quietly from over Peggy’s shoulder. “She’s never going to let you get away with leaving before you at least have on dry socks. And anyway, I promised hot chocolate to whoever managed to hit Bucky, and I definitely saw you paste him at least once.”
She smiles despite herself. “I believe it was peppermint hot chocolate which was promised.”
He laughs as their eyes meet, though his flick downward just after, a new flush filtering through his cheeks that she suspects has nothing to do with the cold.
“And who do we have here?” Mrs. Barnes asks, clearly finished cooing over Angie.
Peggy turns, smile still on her face. “Lovely to meet you, Mrs. Barnes. I’m Peggy Carter.”
Tumblr media
“Get out of here while you can,” Bucky whispers fifteen minutes later, and Angie nods, telling Peggy, “If I ever need you to take a bullet for me, I expect you to remember this moment.”
“Why on earth would we be standing beside each other with bullets flying?” Peggy asks, eyebrow gracefully arched.
Before either of the others can reply, however, Steve takes Peggy’s hand from behind and tugs her away, whispering, “They’re not wrong,” as Mrs. Barnes returns with arms stacked with twenty-year-old photo albums.
“I promised Peggy something hot to drink,” he tells Mrs. Barnes more loudly. She waves them off, probably half from good hostess instincts and half eagerness to force the remaining two into a walk down memory lane.
It doesn’t escape Peggy’s notice that Steve doesn’t relinquish her hand until they’re safely in the kitchen, although it’s quite apparent where it is. She can’t say that she minds, however. With neither of them wet and frozen any longer, it’s much easier to appreciate the gentle solidity of his fingers, the press of their palms against each other.
Too soon for her to have cataloged the sensation entirely, Steve lets her go and starts moving around to the pantry and cupboards. Peggy stands watching him, curling her toes against the floor in the borrowed socks she is now wearing along with an absolutely divinely plush gray cardigan loaned to her by Mrs. Barnes. The lady of the house had insisted on adding the wettest items to the dryer - “As if I would let you back out into the street like that to freeze. My mother would come back and haunt me!” - which had included Peggy’s blouse and coat, though luckily not her singlet or her jeans (damp, but dark enough to have avoided scrutiny, so Peggy hadn’t needed to strategize a polite objection to wearing someone else’s trousers).
“I hesitate to offer considering my skills in this area, but can I do anything to help?” she finally asks.
Steve shakes his head as he sets a saucepan on the stove. “This is about the only thing I can make, but I can do it with my eyes closed.” He gestures her over to a seat, which she takes.
“Why was peppermint hot chocolate the one recipe you ever learned?” she wonders as he lights a burner and adds together milk, cocoa powder, chocolate chips, and a bit of sugar.
“I learned plenty,” he says, angling himself to see her and stir at the same time. “This was just the only one that stuck. My mom worked a lot, and plenty of night shifts. It was just the two of us, so I wanted to make sure she would come home to something warm and good after all of that. She passed a while back, but I still make it for Bucky’s family when I’m around - they’ve always been great to me.”
“Ah,” Peggy says, trying to sound normal and satisfied with his answer instead of a bit overcome by his factual sweetness, the way he seems completely unresentful of the multitude of Barnes relatives while he apparently has no family left. She clears her throat. “And what is it you do, other than distribute homemade hot beverages?”
He flashes a bit of a smile at her, tucking his hands into the pocket of the sweatshirt he had borrowed from Bucky’s old bedroom upstairs. His hair is adorably mussed from pulling it over his head, and Peggy can’t quite tear her eyes away.
“I run the art program over at the community center,” he says, turning to add a few drops of something to the chocolate mixture. From the scent which suffuses the air, Peggy guesses that it’s peppermint flavoring. “Afternoon classes, activities with the schools, workshops. My under-twelve group just put up a display at the local library if you want to go visit.” He sounds absurdly proud.
“How wonderful.” The words come out even more softly than she had thought they would. She tries to pull herself together with the crispness of tapping straight a stack of papers, but doesn’t quite manage it. The soft smile won’t leave her face and she wonders if it might be a permanent fixture now. Oh, they’ll certainly go their separate ways shortly, but she feels that there was some amount of luck involved in her having had the chance to meet him in the first place.
Blinking a little, he turns away and unwraps a few of the peppermint candies Mrs. Barnes has set out in a dish on the counter. “What do you do?” he asks, crushing the candies with the handle of a knife.
Feeling her smile fade a bit into something more businesslike, less touched by gentle joy, Peggy says, “I’m the policy director for a non-profit.” It’s her standard response, the beginning of a slow wade into the more detailed answer. It is also, she has to admit, the beginning of a test, one which nearly all the potential partners Angie had tried to set her up with ended up failing.
“Which one?” Steve asks, gliding unknowingly through the first level of scrutiny as he scrapes the crushed peppermints into a palm and deposits them into the pot, beginning to stir again. (Peggy still sometimes finds herself surprised at how many people are so eager to turn the topic back to themselves that they accept the most simplistic answer and move along.)
“The INRJ,” Peggy says. It seems that she’s holding her breath just a bit as she gives her usual pause. She finds that she does not want Steve to make a misstep in this. She thinks she might forgive him if he did.
“The International Network for Reproductive Justice, right?” The way he gives her a look, double checking, deferring to her knowledge: if there were truly points, he would have earned himself a bonus just then. “Back when it was the International Pro-Choice Network, my mom used to bring me along to play under the table while she was stuffing envelopes or phone banking.” He tilts his head to the side and adds, “Bucky actually reminded me of that a few weeks ago - he saw an ad for the symposium you were holding and thought I should check it out.”
“Oh, yes,” she says, using the reminder of work to shore herself up a bit from melting. “I was meant to speak about the effects of the global gag rule, but I ended up sitting on the tarmac at Heathrow instead.”
He makes a commiserating face. “They did say that the talk about adoption and foster care in eastern European countries was a last minute replacement, although the speaker was really good. I hadn’t realized that was supposed to be your spot. I’m sorry you didn’t get a chance to speak; I would have liked to hear what you had to say.”
“Yes,” she says, slightly dazedly, the word nearly lost in the sound as he snaps off the burner. “Natasha is quite talented. She always gives a good presentation.”
“The community health initiatives to reduce parent and child mortality in Sierra Leone sounded like amazing stuff too.” He’s still talking as he reaches into a cabinet for a pair of mugs, apparently not noticing her reaction. “I ended up donating to the hospital building fund after I got home.”
She’s told dozens of men over the years what she does for her job, and the responses have run the gamut from indifference to confusion to polite questions, from furious rants about the sanctity of life to pompous assurances of allyship. This is the first time she’s heard one of them discuss her organization’s projects with true interest, the first time everything seems to have been said genuinely and unprompted and without the aim of impressing her.
Which is why it does all the more.
“I was glad Bucky suggested it,” Steve tells her, setting her mug in front of her. He takes a seat across from her, his own mug in hand. “He’s been trying to get me to go to all of these random places lately, and the symposium was one of the more interesting.”
“I’ve actually been experiencing the same thing with Angie,” Peggy says, seizing on the topic as a way to keep her equilibrium. “In the last month she’s taken me to a wine and cheese tasting, a Broadway play, and an art showing at the Sage Gallery, which I actually think I would have enjoyed if I hadn’t needed to spend most of it in the stairwell on a conference call.”
Steve, who had been about to take a sip from his mug, lowers it back to the table. With care, he says, “Bucky tried to get me to go to a wine and cheese night but I had to fill in running a watercolors class at the senior center. We went to a Broadway play but ended up switching seats with mom and little kid so they could be on the aisle.” Voice dropping a bit, he adds, “And I had a showing of some paintings at the Sage Gallery three weeks ago.”
They glance in unison toward the living room, as if they might establish some facts by merely turning in the direction of their friends, but all they hear is the low sound of chatter and laughter.
“Angie has arranged so many dreadful dates for me in the past,” Peggy says, leaning over the table to speak to him quietly. “I told her she wasn’t allowed anymore.”
Steve nods. “When Buck sets me up, they always think I’m going to be just like him, and it’s awful to see their faces when they realize I’m not. I just wanted a break from having to sit through dinner with someone who was disappointed that it was me there.”
The mug is hot against her palms, and she finds herself taking in deep breaths of peppermint-scented steam. “One of these days, he’s certain to find you someone who isn’t an utter bloody fool, then,” she says, and though she truly means the words, they come out soft instead of sharp, an outstretched hand.
“I sort of think,” Steve says, tipping his chin up so his eyes catch the light even as they lock with hers. “I sort of think that he’s been trying.”
Tumblr media
Later that night, once she’s tucked away in bed, she thinks about fate and design, the overlap between them, and decides that it doesn’t matter how the moment comes to be if she doesn’t do anything with it. She takes a deep breath and texts him: Your hot chocolate was quite good. Perhaps we could meet sometime so you can show me how to properly prepare it?
Not even a minute later, he responds: I think we can come to an arrangement.
Tumblr media
Angie only gloats a little when she hears that a hot chocolate making lesson and a week of texting has led to the arrangement of an actual date. Bucky is not as gracious. Peggy can’t quite bring herself to care, and by the undeniable flicker of Steve’s smile, she suspects he feels the same.

“Stay here.” she instructed, “I’ll be fine.” He wasn’t going to listen, he really wasn’t but his eyes dropped shut of their own accord.
******
“No, no…” he began to mutter, before his muttering became frantic yells “No, this…not my girls…not…”
With a start, Frank sat straight upright in bed, breathing deeply.
“That.” She said, “On my neck…”
“Why?” he teased, his nose being replaced by his lips as he gently trailed open mouthed kisses up to her ear.
“You know why…”
“You ready to try what the midwife suggested?” he muttered, his mouth nipping at her ear and she gave a laugh.
Fliss looked at him, waiting for the moment her words registered in his sleep-addled brain, which happened roughly 10 or so seconds later when he suddenly sat bolt upright, turning to face her.
“Penny dropped?” she asked arching an eyebrow.
He blinked “He’s…” She nodded, “Yeah…” He blinked again before he swallowed, and with a grin stuttered out a single word.
“Shit!”

So if you've seen AOS, you've seen Whitehall/Werner Reinhardt who tore apart a woman Peggy saved to turn himself young. I propose the AU image where he kidnaps and deages a 93 year old Peggy because it's no fun gloating to/winning over an old lady, and the Avengers show up in time to help her kick his ass. Peggy who was 93 and is now outraged to be like 22 again so she matches the age she screwed Werner over.
holy shit this is 1.3k words??? nonny what did you do to me
I don’t think Peggy saved her but I could be wrong? I don't’ remember the seasons well. I binged all 6 seasons in 2 months to get ready for S7. So my brain was friiiied. Also I apologize for not getting right back to you, long day.
--
Something was wrong. Something had to be wrong. Steve never thought he would be begging the images on the monitor to be wrong before but here he was.
He tried to ignore apparently a not-dead Coulson and Agent May’s looks. His hand gripped the shield tightly and tried to steady his breathing, his eyes never pulling from the screen until Fitz had switched it off.
“Captain Ro-“ Coulson began, a limit timid.
“Steve.”
“Steve. I know what you’re thinking, what you want to happen but we’ve been over these images a hundred times, and a hundred times more with the best people we have at our disposal, these images are real.”
“They can’t be!” Steve wasn’t aware of the anger rising in him until he was clenching his fist, looking between the two head agents.
“And why the hell not?” May asked, giving Steve a firm look. “I think you out of all people should know the mysterious circumstances of things and how the world works. We wouldn’t have called you here if we didn’t think they were real, Captain Rogers.”
Steve didn’t correct her, honestly, he didn’t even hear her. All he felt was the pain of his fist going through Coulson’s wooden desk. They ignored the fluttering of files and clutter of items collapsing to the floor. His knuckles were most likely broken but at this point, the pain was a welcome distraction.
“Because there’s no way in hell Peggy would agree under any circumstances to work with that bastard. She put him away for good! I read her records, we all have. She wouldn’t use him to-to deage. That’s not Peggy.”
“People change,” Hunter mused, shrugging his shoulders. Steve hadn’t even seen the man come in, his hands held up when Steve whirled on him and took three strides closer. There was a good foot height difference between them. “She’s dying and when people start to go, they get desperate. Look, Cap no ones blaming her if she did but the evidence says she’s working for Whitehall and if that’s so, then-“
Steve’s hand closed around Hunter’s neck before he could stop himself, seeing nothing but red. He didn’t choke the man or lift him from the floor, much as he wanted to. He just stared straight into his eyes, aware that May had pulled her gun on him.
“If you’re saying that Hunter, then you never truly knew Peggy. You have no damn idea what the hell she and I have been through during that war so you can sit here and serve Shield and not Schmidt. What the hell the both of I have lost. Agent Carter is a better person than I will ever be. She has morals and ideas that I can never match.”
Coulson’s hand laid over May’s arm, giving a shake of his head. They watched Steve stalk out of the room, the other agents scurrying out of the way.
“What the hell was that for?” Hunter groaned, rubbing at his neck.
“You perfectly insulted his ex-fiance,” Coulson replied, picking up the model of Lola from the floor. “If you ask me, Cap let you off easy.”
--
Clint and Natasha were not happy to have been lied to. Tony says he wasn’t surprised, Bruce was just more relieved than any of them. Thor said in a sheepish tone that he already knew thanks to Lady Sif, then came another whole term of arguments between them until things settled. And for the most part, Steve sat away from them, listening to the debate about Coulson and the very fact Peggy Carter was not only alive but young and working with Hydra.
“That’s not her,” Steve muttered to Natasha when she sat beside him, throwing her feet up on the table.
“I know.” Simply put. She knew.
“That can’t be her. Peggy would rather die than work with Hydra. Not Whitehall, not of all people. She-she can’t.”
“Regardless of the story, Steve, we’ll understand it. Fully.”
--
It was two full days later before Fitz was able to determine a location based on the photos. An underground base through a history of ownership dated back to Schmidt. That makes sense. Just hearing that name made Steve’s blood boil. He could barely listen to Coulson and his plan. All he could think of was Peggy and what the hell Whitehall could be doing to her.
The plan was quickly forgotten about when Steve heard Peggy’s whimpering pain. He threw his shoulder into the door, holding his shield tightly in his hand.
There she was, just as the photos had dictated. Laid out on a gurney, strapped down with blood pumping through her system.
This wasn’t the same Peggy as before. She was younger, much younger and despite the lack of gray hair and wrinkles, her eyes were just as sharp. They fell to Steve and she gritted her teeth, tugging on the bonds.
“Take another step towards me, soldier and you’ll find the reason Whitehall strapped me here.” Steve couldn’t help but to smirk at Peggy’s smart comment. That was her. “Who are you and why in the hell are you wearing Captain Rogers’ face?”
“Peggy, it’s me,” Steve said slowly, calmly, not letting go of the Shield. “It’s you. God, its really you.” He was trying not to cry, to be sedimental but he couldn’t. Tears burned in his eyes as he reached slowly to pull out his dented dog tags.
“Cap, we gotta go,” Tony warned.
She gritted her teeth, that machine, whatever the hell it was, was causing her pain. He couldn’t destroy it, couldn’t get near it without hurting her. “F-fine!” She snapped. “Prove to me you’re Captain Rogers then. Tell me one thing only he would know.”
“July 4th,” Steve said simply, knowing he wasn’t helping Peggy believe him. “1944. You went out of your way to buy me a birthday cake from a lady in town. It was…terrible. God, it was terrible. It tasted like charcoal. Seeing you take a bite, you almost spat it back out but I choked it down for both our sakes because you went through so much trouble.” He paused, trying to think if it was enough. And in the off chance.
“You got sick one winter. Really sick, to the point Phillips considered sending you back to London so you could see a real doctor, not be in the midst of the cold weather. You refused. You were delirious with a fever and so cold. He let me take you to a room you rented and take care of you. I had to nurse you back to health with my ma’s recipes and limited cooking skills. That’s the first time you told me you loved me.”
There it was, that look in her eyes. She believed him without saying a word. Steve rushed forward and undid the needles from her arm, being careful not to tear a vein. “Later,” Peggy whispered to Steve’s worried looks as he picked her up and threw her on his back, leaving his hands free for the shield. “How did you find me?”
“Sleepy and Dopey,” Steve mused despite Peggy’s confused look thrown at the back of his head. “Coulson, Stark?”
“Come on!” The shouting order from Clint and Bobbi at the end of the hall lead Steve to run straight to them. One ahead, one behind is how they made it to ground level and just in time for the warehouse to collapse in on itself, causing a giant sinkhole right in the middle of a large field in God knows where in this arctic.
Coulson shrugged off his jacket and wrapped it around Peggy’s shoulders, letting Mack and Hunter take her straight to the Quin Jet. “Director Carter,” he mused with a polite smile, turning to look at Steve. “We’ll have to keep her for questioning. Make sure –“
“I’m staying,” Steve said firmly, daring the man to say otherwise.
Instead, Coulson smiled and patted Steve’s arm. “I wouldn’t expect anything less.”

7. "I just don't. Want to! Why is that so hard to understand?" + 40. "You might as well just walk around with a sign around your neck saying 'perpetual asshole' on it." 💜💜💜💜
Today is Steve's first day back at work since the accident and it's also Billy's day off so he's had nothing to do but sit and worry and think everything to death since Steve left this morning.
He's been texting back and forth with Steve since then, trying to keep it light, keep it easy all while also texting Max and snapping at every single thing she says. Because no amount of time nor effort nor therapy could ever truly make him not the kind of asshole who handles stress real poorly. But. At least he isn't snapping at Steve. At least there's that.
//
Today is Steve's first day back at work and it's… good. It's great. It's… fine. Really.
Okay, he's miserable. His feet hurt after only having been on them for three hours because after having been reduced to basically lying on his ass on the couch for months, his stamina is garbage and his arm is sore and his everything else aches seemingly just because the rest of his body parts didn't want to miss out on the party his feet and his arm are apparently having and…
It sucks.
The only thing keeping him going is texting Billy, even if Billy is pretending to be cool about everything rather than be honest and admit how stressed out he is about this. Steve expects to head to Billy's apartment at the end of the day and find that he's punched a hole into the wall. He's got 'nearest hardware stores' pulled up as a google search tab in the browser on his phone, just in case.
"Oh no, by all means, go ahead, laugh at my misery."
Steve's head snaps up as Dustin comes stomping into the kitchen followed closely by Robin and rather than pay attention to what Dustin just said, Robin is on Steve in an instant, dragging the tall, ugly stool over from the far side of the kitchen for Steve to sit on because she can tell just by looking at him, can tell just from the way he'd been leaning against the wall that he's exhausted just by standing.
He sits down in the proffered chair without complaint and Dustin continues on with his rant like he'd never been interrupted in the first place. "Like. I just don't. Want to! Why is that so hard to understand?"
Steve looks at Dustin, then at Robin, who shrugs uselessly, before looking back to Dustin. "I take it your date didn't go very well?"
Dustin huffs out a breath in the most dramatic, most Dustin way possible. "No, it did not."
Robin giggles and shoves her hand in front of her face before muttering, almost unintelligibly, "Tell him what happened."
Dustin's face crumples up so hard it begins to resemble a crushed soda can more than it does a face, but he says, "He showed me a naked picture of himself in the middle of the date as a way to, I think, proposition me for sex."
Steve feels his eyes try to separate themselves from his skull. He has no idea what to say to that so he just winds up gaping at Dustin blankly and fighting his eyeballs and their unrelenting urge to flee.
"Oh, he was totally trying to fuck you," Robin says. "He wanted him some curly haired nerd boy real bad." She giggles uproariously.
Dustin makes a noise somewhere between a grunt and a squeak. "And, as I have said a million times before, I. Do. Not. Want. That."
With a grunt of his own, though its one borne of exhaustion and not defeat, Steve gets to his feet and goes to pat Dustin reaffirmingly on the shoulder. "I know, man," he says, because he does.
Before meeting Billy, his dating life had been the exact same way. A complete and unmitigated disaster.
//
Max gets home from class sometime after one, spends ten minutes listening to Billy groan softly to himself and throw the same ball against the wall again and again and again before finally deciding she's had enough and dragging him out to Navy Pier. It's tacky and cliche and touristy… and also the only place in the entirety of basically landlocked Illinois that even remotely reminds either of them of California. And it's not that it looks the same. Or that it feels the same. But that it's a pier with a ferris wheel and that's about as close as either of them is going to get around here.
So they go. And sometimes they go a lot considering as they both quite frequently miss California but also love Chicago and the people they've grown to know and love here.
It usually cheers one or both of them up when they're bummed out or angry or sad or whatever and today Max drags Billy, same as always, thinking it'll work its usual magic, same as always.
Only it doesn't.
They wander around the tacky little gift shops and nothing.
She buys him an ice cream and nothing.
She offers to ride on the ferris wheel with him and nothing.
The only thing that gets him to smile even a little is a bakery with some plain little cupcakes out on display that he immediately takes pictures of and then starts texting, she thinks, Steve.
And that's when she gets the idea.
//
Dustin sighs. "Thank you, Steven. You on the other hand"—he turns to glare at Robin—"You might as well just walk around with a sign around your neck saying 'perpetual asshole' on it."
Robin huffs, clearly unbothered by Dustin's accusation. "You know I support your right to not fuck whoever you please. I just think your reactions are funny."
Steve's phone goes off and he struggles not to check it.
"And a guy showing you naked pictures of himself in the middle of a date is hilarious," Robin says, grin nearly splitting her face in two.
Dustin scowls and Steve's phone goes off again and he loses the battle not to check it.
He has two texts from Billy. The first is a picture of some cupcakes with pastel blue icing. The second says, "Yours are better," and Steve can't help but smile.
When he looks up Dustin is still scowling only now it's being directed at him.
"What?" Steve asks, fully not getting it.
Dustin grumbles something Steve doesn't quite catch, throws his hands up in the air full drama queen style and stomps back out to the front room.
"What?" Steve says again, this time to Robin.
Robin's still smiling but the meaning behind it changes a little. Now it's less like she's having a good time and more like she's about to explain something to him. (And she just loves explaining things to him.) "He's just mad you have someone while all he can find are losers," she says.
"Oh."
Robin shrugs like, "What can you do?" and she says, "Yeah."
//
"I got an idea," Max says.
Billy looks up, not exactly curious, but not… not curious, either.
"Come on," she says, holding a hand out to him. He takes it, but he looks suspicious.
She doesn't tell him where they're going, just drags him to her car and makes him get in.
//
They arrive at the bakery and Billy sighs partly in annoyance with Max for coming up with the idea and making it some big secret, partly at himself for not getting it sooner than four blocks ago and partly in relief because annoyed as he might be at Max, he needs to be here and he's glad she's dragged him.
He walks in and the second he does, Dustin grumbles at him, "Of course you're here. Because you're perfect!" And it sounds like an insult, it has the tone of one, but Billy doesn't remotely get why or what for.
"Why—" Billy starts but Max's burst of laughter cuts him off.
Dustin makes a very loud noise and points to the kitchen. "Your boyfriend's in the back," he says, sour as anything.
Max laughs again and Billy just shrugs and heads for the back. He claps Dustin on the shoulder as he passes by and manages to keep his laughter to himself, but none of this impresses Dustin.
The kitchen is worse (read: weirder) than the front room had been because the second Billy steps through this door Robin shouts, "Billy! Yes! Please take your idiot boyfriend home!"
Steve glowers at her and slowly—much too slowly to mean anything other than he needs to be taken home right now—gets up off his ugly, little stool and comes to stand by Billy. "I'm fine," he growls.
This time Billy speaks before Robin can get to it. "Yeah... considering how long it took you to get up off your stool and walk over to me I'd say you're not."
Robin nods at him and he nods back and Steve grunts, "What? Are you two conspiring against me now?" He looks to Robin. "Did you text him and ask him to come get me?"
Billy huffs. "No. Max brought me. I was being miserable and she dragged me to the Pier and when that didn't work she dragged me here." He puts a heavy hand on Steve's good side and Steve melts under the touch almost completely.
Billy waits for Steve to say something, or for Robin to, but when neither of them does, he leans in and kisses Steve, gentle and quick.
"Let's go home, yeah? This was good enough for a first day."
Fortunately, this is all the convincing Steve seems to need and he lets Billy lead him out of the bakery and to Max's crusty, old orange Beetle.
Max is incorrigible the entire drive back. She doesn't say anything in terms of words, but the smug smirk plastered all over her face says everything.
//
They go to Billy's without even discussing it.
Steve's not brave enough to admit it out loud yet, but he's started thinking of this place as 'home' as much as he hopes Billy thinks it is. And maybe he does. After all, Billy did say, "Let's go home?" didn't he? Not "Let's go to my place" or "Let's go, we'll pick where later" or even just "Let's go". He said, very specifically, "Let's go home." So maybe he meant it.
Or maybe it was just a casual slip of the tongue and Steve is overthinking things.
There isn't time to talk about it, though, even if Steve had wanted to, because Billy starts directing him towards the bedroom the second Max opens the front door and Steve is asleep the second he lies down on the bed and his head hits the pillow.

Non-Sequential [Ch. 18]
Pairing: Pre-Serum Steve Rogers/Steve Rogers x Reader
One night, Steve Rogers met a beautiful dame named Y/N. He hadn’t intended on letting her get away. But fate had other ideas. Y/N appeared and disappeared in his life so hauntingly that Steve started to wonder if she was an angel meant to watch over him.
Word Count: 3,200
Chapter 17
Tumblr media
Steve waited patiently as he sat across from Y/N. Despite her throwing herself into his arms when she showed up at his door, she came to moments later and put that unbearable distance between them once again.
Steve adhered to Bucky’s warnings. Everything was now on Y/N’s terms. He wouldn’t touch her, wouldn’t crowd her personal space until she wanted him to and consented.
“I’m sorry,” Steve finally started the talking. “I should never have left you. I was scared. Scared that I was the reason you kept getting put into danger. I convinced myself that if I stayed away, you would be safer.”
Then he leaned forward. His body needed to be closer to her, but he had to respect her distance. “I don’t expect you to forgive me for it. I’ll wait for as long as it takes. Because I know that’s what I deserve.”
Y/N just stared into Steve’s baby blue eyes. It felt like minutes.
“You know what hurts the most about it all?” She whispered. He said nothing, but just waited. “I was there for you, out of my own time, every moment you needed me. When your mom passed, the night before you got the serum, even when you were being beat up in back alleys of Brooklyn – I was there for you.”
Steve was crying now. His head dipped in shame.
“And the one time I needed you, more than ever, you’re nowhere to be found.”
“I know, Y/N.” Steve whispered, wiping away his tears. He knew it was pointless. They just kept flowing.
“You left me alone in a country I know nothing about, surrounded by strangers. All while you’re running around the world, trying to make me forget about you.” Then she shook her head at how ridiculous it sounded as when she said it aloud. “As if I could ever forget you…”
“I know,” he repeated.
“You want me to tell you what to do to get me to forgive you, I suppose.” Y/N muttered darkly. “The thing is… I have no idea what that is.”
Just when Steve thought his head couldn’t dip any lower, it did.
“I understand,” he answered.
“But I love you,” Y/N finally stated.
Steve’s head shot up.
“And I’m always going to love you. So, maybe I can’t forgive you right now. But I will forgive you. I just don’t know when.”
Y/N slowly stood up then.
Steve shot to his feet, his dated chivalrous manners incapable of being stopped.
“I just…I just need time,” Y/N admitted timidly before leaving his bedroom. ————————————————
Bucky was riding Humphrey, trying to herd the goats back into their pen. It was a unnecessary since they were basically as obedient as dogs. But Bucky was thinking about getting some sheep. He had to learn to herd them correctly if he wanted to be able to manage it all.
The goats seemed to sense something that Bucky hadn’t and started running past Bucky, against his commands. He turned Humphrey to follow their path and realized that the goats were running towards Y/N as she approached his land.
A wave of relief washed over Bucky. She was back from her time traveling. And she did not look to be physically harmed.
However, even from the distance, Bucky could see that she was broken up.
He quickly dismounted and walked toward her.
She stopped and let out a long sigh.
Bucky waited.
Then Y/N closed the distance between them and wrapped her arms around Bucky.
He was surprised by sudden intimacy. But he wrapped his arm around her nonetheless.
“You OK, kid?” He whispered gently in her hair.
She nodded her head against his neck, but didn’t let go of him quite yet.
“Somethin’ happen when you traveled?” He asked softly.
She shook her head.
He pulled away slightly so he could study her face.
“What’s going on, Y/N?” He asked as he brushed some hair behind her ear.
“I don’t know anymore,” she whispered. “I just needed some air and next thing I knew I was walking here.”
Humphrey had walked over and nuzzled Y/N’s neck. His animal instinct sensing the human’s distress. She giggled at the tickling and gave the horse the attention it wanted. She turned and stroked Humphrey slowly.
“I’m just…tired,” she finally said. Though she kept her focus on the horse, Bucky knew she was talking to him.
“Steve know you’re back?” He asked.
She nodded, “I just talked to him.”
Bucky nodded slowly. “Maybe you should get some sleep, kid.”
Y/N eventually nodded agreeing. “I can’t…I just can’t go back there right now.”
Bucky’s brow furrowed at her words. But he wasn’t about to kick her out. “OK.”
Then he led her to his hut. The goats happily pranced behind them, trying to catch up.
Once they were inside, he pointed to his bed. Y/N eyed him for a moment and shifted her weight awkwardly. For some reason, sleeping in his bed felt intimate, even without him in it.
“Go ahead. I gotta do stuff around the farm still. I won’t bother ya,” Bucky insisted.
Without waiting for her response, Bucky closed the door behind him.
Y/N stifled her giggle when she heard Bucky reprimanding his pets that they had to let her sleep.
“Fred, leave her alone. I’m not messing around,” she heard Bucky warn with a stern tone that was fading as he stepped further and further away from the hut.
It had started to leave Y/N in awe how Bucky seemed to be a completely different person from the robotic weapon she had met in the past. He admitted to having rough times and to struggling with getting back to even just a small portion of the man he once was.
But to see him work at it everyday made Y/N realize she could get back to herself too.
Bucky’s life had been much harder than Y/N’s time traveling. It made her trials and tribulations look like a cakewalk in comparison. She knew it wasn’t a competition. It wasn’t about who’s life was more difficult. But that didn’t stop her from admiring his strength.
Y/N knew it wasn’t as easy for him as he made it out to be. But his efforts made Y/N want to stop feeling sorry for herself.
Y/N didn’t know how long she’d been sleeping for. But it was definitely the longest she’d slept since arriving in Wakanda. She realized it was the smells that had finally roused her, the need for food now stronger than the need for sleep.
When she opened her eyes, the hut was darker. The sun must’ve just gone since the sky outside the window was a beautiful purple, pink, and orange dusk.
Y/N looked over to see that Bucky was cooking in the kitchen.
She sat up, suddenly having a weird feeling wash over her.
This felt off. Too intimate. Domestic.
“Figured you’d be hungry once you woke up.” Bucky had known the moment she was awake, but he kept cooking.
Y/N tried to act casual, but her heart was racing for some reason. “Uh…what’re you making?”
“Shuri sent over some recipes and even included these little video tutorials,” he gestured to the hologram projecting from a tablet on the kitchen counter. It was showing a step-by-step process and even kept with Bucky’s pace so he didn’t have to keep rewinding and pausing as he cooked.
“It’s pilau with braised lamb,” Bucky answered. “Apparently it’s a classic Wakandan dish.”
Y/N ran her hands through her hair, assuming she looked a mess after sleeping for so long.
“Uhh…I should probably get going.”
Bucky finally took his eyes off his cook and looked at her for the first time since she woke up.
“What?” It was a dumb response, but he could sense she was trying to flee.
“Yeah, I should get back to the palace.”
Bucky sighed and put his utensils down and wiped off his hands before walking over to her. “Y/N, what’s wrong?”
“Nothing. Nothing’s wrong,” she answered too quickly.
Before Bucky could say anything, Y/N jumped off the bed and was putting on her shoes. Then she threw her hair up into a mess bun and booked it out of his hut.
“Y/N,” Bucky called after her, but it was pointless.
She was speed walking up the hill when she stopped dead at the sight before her.
Steve was walking down the hill, coming right towards her. As soon as he caught sight of her as well, he paused too. Then he continued walking at a much slower pace.
“I didn’t expect to find you here,” Steve told her when they were finally close enough to talk to one another.
“I was just – I was just hanging out with Bucky,” Y/N shrugged as she crossed her arms.
Steve nodded slowly. “You don’t have to leave because of me, you know.”
Even though Y/N had been on her way out before she knew Steve was heading over.
“Oh, I was already heading home. He’s making dinner. You should go see him. I don’t think he wants to be alone right now.” Her words were jerky and awkward. For some reason, she felt like she’d been caught doing something bad. She also didn’t know why she told Steve that Bucky didn’t want to be alone.
“Everything OK?” Steve asked carefully.
Y/N nodded quickly without looking him in the eye.
“Look, I know things aren’t great with us right now, Y/N. But I just need you to know you can still talk to me – about anything.”
Her heart dropped and she couldn’t help but meet his gaze. “I know, Steve.”
He nodded. “Sure you don’t want to come back with me?”
Y/N turned around and looked back at Bucky’s hut.
“Umm…Actually, yeah. I’ll go back with you.”
Steve seemed pleasantly surprised and tried not to look overexcited.
Y/N started walking by his side.
Maybe if she sat with both of them, things would be clearer. Maybe if Bucky saw her with Steve at her side he’d understand that they couldn’t continue dancing around this fine line that she was starting to see.
Did she have feelings for Bucky? Did Bucky have feelings for her?
Steve was the one that knocked on the door.
Why was she so nervous? This was stupid. She was being stupid.
Bucky didn’t care about her more than as Steve’s girl. He didn’t care about her as more than a friend.
Bucky opened the door and his expression immediately shifted. It was subtle. Of course it was; he was probably the world’s deadliest assassin. He knew how to control his emotions.
“Steve,” Bucky greeted evenly.
“We ran into each other,” Steve explained, eyeing Y/N. “Figured the three of us could hang out. You know… like old times.”
“Great. I made plenty,” Bucky smiled warmly.
If there was an lingering concern or tension from his and Y/N’s strange goodbye just moments ago, he didn’t show any signs of it.
Y/N found no animosity or suspicion aimed at Steve from Bucky. Maybe she had been imagining things growing between her and him. Maybe she really was an idiot.
“You cook?” Steve asked in slight shock.
“Now I do,” Bucky shrugged.
Steve walked in first, which gave Bucky an opportunity to look at Y/N and ask her silently if she was OK. He didn’t understand why she tried to flee, to run away from him.
Y/N just responded to his silent question with a forced smile.
She expected this to quickly turn into a nightmare, a social experiment gone completely wrong. She was about to have dinner with her boyfriend, who didn’t feel like her boyfriend right now, and his best friend, who she’d kiss and was acting more like her boyfriend than her actual boyfriend.
What could go wrong?
But nothing did go wrong.
Bucky didn’t act weird. Steve didn’t act weird. Apparently, the only person that had been expecting things to get weird was Y/N.
Bucky and Steve fell into conversation, the same way they did back in the 30s.
Through the tablet Shuri gave him, Bucky started playing jazz from the 30s and 40s. It felt very out of place in the tribal hut in the middle of Africa.
Steve kept his distance from Y/N for the most part. Everyone knew Steve wasn’t one for PDA. But Bucky wasn’t the public. Everyone once in awhile, Steve’s hand would pat Y/N’s thigh when she said something cute or funny. It never went unnoticed by Y/N.
Bucky could tell it was hard for Steve to stop himself from doing more. Steve would be about to put his hand on Y/N’s lower back as they moved around the kitchen, trying to help Bucky make dinner. And at the last second, Steve would pull his hand away. Then Bucky would see that sparkle in Steve’s eyes. He recognized it from when Steve would look at Peggy. Bucky just knew Steve was dying to kiss his girl.
Bucky had never seen the couple together while they were in love. He’d only been with them in the platonic part of their relationship. This was new. This was different.
It was late into the night now. Candles were melting to their end. All three of their plates were empty and their stomachs were full. They’d been drinking wine all night, but Y/N was the only one tipsy from the drink. Neither Steve nor Bucky seemed to mind it though.
Then Y/N yawned twice within 5 minutes of each other and Steve knew that cue.
“Alright. I think it’s about time I get this one to bed,” he stated playfully, nodding towards Y/N as she poured herself another glass of wine.
“I’m adult. I know when it’s time to go to bed. Thank you very much,” Y/N replied with snark.
Bucky smirked at her as she filled their two glasses as well.
Steve just chuckled, knowing she was fine and it wasn’t worth even playfully bickering with her over it.
“Plus, we gotta help Bucky clean up,” Y/N added as if it were obvious.
“No, it’s fine, doll. I don’t need any help,” Bucky quickly answered as he stood up and already started grabbing some of the plates.
Y/N glared at him. Then she looked at Steve and he seemed to be watching Bucky with an expression she couldn’t quite read. Little did she know, it was sparked by Bucky calling her ‘doll.’
Steve realized Y/N was studying him and snapped out of it, giving her a shy but charming grin.
“Come on. I’ll walk you home,” he told her gently.
Then he stood up and walked to his friend. “Thanks for dinner, Buck.” The two men gave each other a hug and Y/N could tell how much the two loved each other even from such a simple and innocent form of affection.
Then Y/N quickly gave Bucky a hug as well, muttering her own thanks into his shoulder.
The Wakandan air had gotten cooler and drier since the sun went down. Y/N shivered slightly at the sudden change of temperature and immediately crossed her arms, hugging them tightly to her torso to conserve body heat.
A second later, a warm weight covered her shoulders. Y/N jumped slightly at Steve placing his jacket around her shoulders.
He didn’t even have to think about it. Being a caring gentleman was the most natural thing to Steve Rogers.
“Thanks,” Y/N muttered softly as she looked at the ground and pulled his jacket tighter around herself.
He just nodded.
They started walking into the night, back toward the palace.
“I can’t seem to get over how beautiful it is here,” Steve sighed as he looked up at the stars.
Y/N’s eyes went up to the sky too and she just nodded.
“I’m sorry…for leaving you here all alone,” Steve told her. “I didn’t want you to get tangled up in everything that happened with The Accords and I knew there was nowhere safer for you than Wakanda.”
“I understand why you did it,” she replied. Then she met his gaze. “But that doesn’t make it any less shitty.”
Steve knew that was fair.
“Where have you been?” Y/N realized she had never bothered asking.
“We’ve been bouncing around. Can’t stay in one place for long. We’ve been picking up any leads we can get, trying to do some good still, even when if we’re…” His words died.
“Criminals?” Y/N offered knowingly.
“Guess that’s the word, yeah.”
Y/N stopped walking then. He followed her lead.
“Steve, even with everything that happened, it doesn’t matter what the hell they say. You’re still a hero. Criminal or not, they can’t take that away from you.”
Steve scratched the back on his neck. “I don’t deserve you saying that,” he exhaled. “But thank you, Y/N.”
She nodded once and kept walking.
The rest of their walk back was filled with silence. Not an awkward kind.
Steve walked Y/N all the way to her bedroom door.
“Thanks for walking me back,” Y/N muttered stiffly.
He nodded.
“How long are you staying for?” The question fell from her lips before she could stop herself and she immediately regretted it.
“Trying to get rid of me already?” Steve tried to tease.
“No, just trying to keep my expectations realistic,” she answered back a little too spitefully.
Steve winced at it. “Now that – that I deserved.”
“Sorry. I shouldn’t have – just…sorry.”
“No, it’s OK. Really.” Then he put his hands on his hips, a gesture that was so Steve. “I’m not going anywhere. I gotta fix this.”
Y/N’s whole body tensed at his admission to guilt. Steve wasn’t a liar, especially when it came to her, to their relationship. He was a man of his word. If he planned on staying for as long as it took to fix them, he was going to do exactly that.
She finally opened her bedroom door. “Goodnight, Steve.”
He nodded. “Goodnight, Y/N.”
She started to close her door.
“Y/N?” Steve said quickly, as if he had a sudden burst of courage.
She opened her door wider and gave him a questioning look.
“Would you maybe want to meet me tomorrow morning?” “Sure,” she answered too quickly without asking for more details.
Steve beamed and relief was released from his shoulders. “Great. I’ll meet you here at 7AM?”
She tried not to cringe at the time.
But Steve caught it anyway. “I know. It’s early. But it’ll be worth it, I promise.”
Y/N just nodded. “OK. I trust you.”
Those words meant more to Steve than she could ever realize, especially after everything they went through.

Movie Night Need
A Movie Night Need
It has been months since you got Billy back and you two have been stuck to the hip ever since. You guys were getting back into a routine and you both were apart of this little disturbed family. A family that made absolutely no sense, but still a family. Something Billy never really had before. And you had a boyfriend, Steve Harrington. Things were starting to look perfect. But, lately Billy’s been avoiding you like the plague and it’s hurting the both of you.
Character Relations: Billy Hargrove x reader , Steve Harrington x Reader
A/N: Hey, it’s been a hot minute. Ducks aren’t in a row and they probably never will be lol. This popped into my head and I just wrote it down. Enjoy.
WARNINGS: CURSING
Tumblr media
The familiar scent of buttered popcorn clouded the small living room as everyone tried to get comfortable around the TV. As elbows dug into sides and legs unwillingly outstretched and bent to accommodate to the space that was left the room grew louder and louder. Listening to them bicker was always the best part of movie night, but Billy couldn’t focus on a single word the kids were saying. Billy was too busy watching your head rest on Steve’s chest and how his arm was wrapped around your waist. Billy’s gaze was so fixated on you and how tenderly Steve held you- it was enough to make his blood pressure rise.
“Jesus, just sit down, dorks. I would like to see the movie sometime tonight.” Billy’s gaze was broken by the sound of Robin-who apparently didn’t know how to sit like a normal human being. Billy’s eyes flickered back to you as he tried to relax back into the recliner.
The last few movie nights he hasn’t even tried to watch the movies that played on the TV. Movie night, he didn’t hate it, but it wasn’t his favorite thing to do every other week. It was more of a check in then anything, to make sure everyone was doing as well as they could be after everything. A family get together if you will. So Billy got through it for Max, and for El, and for you. Even though lately he’s been trying to avoid you and it’s been hell. Ever since you started dating Steve he had found it hard to be around you and yet all he wanted to do was be around you. Most all of him wanted to take up all your time that way you wouldn’t have a second to be with Steve, to be so selfish with you that Steve wouldn’t have a choice but to see himself as option number two. Most all of him.
The rest of him told him to keep his distance, to get himself in order so he didn’t go overboard and push everyone away- push you away.  So much of Billy has changed these past few months, he’s started behaving more and more like the Billy you genuinely got to know before anyone else got to know him. Not the the asshole Hawkins knew him as. Even though some of those asshole tendencies were still there, but they were tendencies most had anyway- the easily sparked temper, the prideful arrogance, the unforgiving stubbornness. They were defining characteristics that made Billy who he was; but it was important that it was understood that they weren’t all that Billy was. Believe it or not, Billy was rather thoughtful, had a rather strong sense of integrity, and was more generous than most.
You and Billy were birds of a feather and the hardest to separate out of the gang. You were the one that pestered everyone about Billy and getting him back. Insisting he wasn’t dead and that the Russians had him. Then, once the hard part was over the healing process began, and you were there every step of the way. Learning how to change bandages and keep wounds clean. Long and sleepless nights of just talking and comforting Billy, either with him or through the phone. It was a lot and it was far from finished, but a lot of progress has been made. Regardless though, you two still talked on the phone until Hopper yelled at Billy for being up so late. You two were thick as thieves, that’s why this sudden split was so unnatural.
It was unnatural to everyone. It left everyone confused- it left you more than just confused. It felt like you were just dropped off in the middle of nowhere in the dark with no clue which way was right or left. It truthfully took a toll on you, you weren’t expecting Billy to let you go so soon. After everything you expected Billy and you to be together forever, even if it wasn’t exactly the way you wanted it. But, you’ve just been trying to brush it off and carry on as normal. You reached for Billy and he either kept the conversation short or he just wasn’t there. For the life of you, you couldn’t figure out why he all of a sudden wanted nothing to do with you, but you figured he had just grown tired. You still were nowhere close to accepting it, you were furious. There was a fire in your bones whenever you looked at him, but you still can't bring yourself to speak up. Besides, what would you even say without sounding pathetic? So you just kept your distance.
Billy’s leg started to bounce again as he saw Steve kiss your temple. It was infuriating. You were with him after everything? It just didn’t make any sense to him- and to anyone for that matter. You never even mentioned the slightest interest in the guy and all of a sudden you’re having hushed conversations with him in the corner of the room. It was always you and him, not you and Steve. Billy closed his eyes and let out a shallow breath, trying to calm himself. He should’ve made the move, he was just so scared that you wouldn’t feel the same. That his feelings would chase you away. He couldn’t handle the rejection from you, so he just kept things the way they were, thinking you’d always be right there. He was wrong, of course, he was just hoping he had a little more time. And whoever it was that swept you off your feet wasn’t the guy that was apart of this little fucked up family. Wasn’t the guy that you befriended while he was locked away in a Russian cell or the guy he had vendetta- for virtually no reason- with during high school. It pissed him off to no extent, he should’ve known that pretty boy was going to be the one that went after you.
But, he has got to get over that. He has to come to terms with the fact that you and Steve were together and he was just a friend. Billy’s got those moments that you were constantly by his side, the moments were you treated him like the fine China that Susan kept on display in a curio cabinet, or the times you’d lean against him when you were stuck with the goblins way later than you should be at the arcade. The times you just started rubbing his back when you sensed he was uncomfortable and your hand probably stayed there longer than it should have, or when your eyes found his in a room telling him exactly what was on your mind. To him that meant something, something so much more, but he guesses he was wrong.
A sharp hit to the leg pulled him out of his thoughts and he looked down at the culprit. Max was leaning against the side of the recliner, “Movie’s starting.”
“Hands where I can see them.” Billy joked and as Max’s face twisted in disgust a sly smirk found Billy’s face, “I’m serious.” Max rolled her eyes and turned to start up conversation with Lucas again. An airy laugh left Billy as the room went dark and everyone focused on the TV.
“You okay?” Steve asked pulling you out of your exhausted wandering thoughts. A little hum made its way out of closed lips as they formed into a little sweet smile. Steve let out a harsh breath of air through his nostrils as a weak smile crossed his face. “Alright. Whenever you’re ready.” Steve said as he placed a strong kiss on your forehead.
You are extremely tired, but Steve knew that wasn’t just it. He knew that it was Billy and Steve was not about to force you to talk about something you weren’t ready to talk about. He wasn’t going to poke and prod, he decided to just be patient with you, he knew you’d speak with him when you were ready. He didn’t know if you had feelings for Billy, but he knew Billy had feelings for you. He knew that’s why Billy pushed himself away from you- he knew, Hopper knew, Joyce knew, Murray knew, Nancy knew, Robin knew, Max knew, and hell even Mike knew. But did you know?
As The Shining’s long and boring intro started Billy’s mind tried to focus on the film. Tried to keep his eyes trained on the TV and not on the way you were already starting to fall asleep on Steve’s chest. It was a battle between you and the TV. Thoughts of you winning every time. What exactly have you been up to lately? You’ve been working a lot more than usual because he’s seen your beaten down black 1971 Oldsmobile 442 in the parking lot of the corner store you worked at. That had to be the reason you were so tired. You only said ‘hi’ to him before you crawled onto the sofa and away from the fight over cheap pizza in the kitchen. Come to think of it Billy didn’t even see you eat.
Billy’s watched at least forty five minutes of this movie give or take in between the time he’s watched you sleep against Steve’s chest. He’s absorbed maybe fifteen minutes of it between worrying about you and trying to put together what to say to you to clean up his mess.
Frustrated, Billy’s leg started to bounce anxiously again as he moved to the edge of the recliner. Breaking his gaze with the TV he looked over to search for your frame until he realized it wasn’t there. Steve sat there alone, this might be the only chance he has to talk to you.
“What are you doing?” Max hushed, irritated at the noise of the recliner breaking the barrier between reality and the psychological horror film that played on the screen in front of them.
“Popcorn.” He gritted out, standing up and making his mind up to go and talk to you. He had no idea what he was going to say, but he had to try, he had to fix this. He ruffled Max’s hair while stealing her and Lucas’s popcorn bowl, and before she could swat his hand away, he was gone and the almost empty bowl was set on the breakfast bar. She just sighed as Lucas took her hand, her brother has always been an idiot who didn’t know how to clean up his messes.
You sat on the toilet lid seat, you didn’t want to be here and you sure as hell didn’t want to be only feet away from Billy. It hurt too much. You should’ve canceled and lied saying you had taken an extra shift while actually you stayed at home in bed. As you pulled your knees to your chest you tried to hold it together. You always told yourself you’d be okay if this happened, why weren’t you okay? Things were starting to look up. Things were settling down and everyone was trying to get back to a semi-normal life. The kids were entering there teens in strides. You had a decent paying job and you just about had enough money saved to go on a trip. You were in a relationship. Everything looked so perfect. Why wasn’t everything perfect?
You took a deep breath rubbing your temples. Billy was leaving you and you were not coping well with it. It’s not like he’s your boyfriend, you have a boyfriend. Speaking of boyfriend, Steve. You needed to talk to him, you needed to tell him you needed a break. Give him the whole ‘It’s not you it’s me’ spiel, because it was you. You just needed it to be you for awhile, maybe you two could be something. You just needed to go on that trip and get away for awhile. Get Billy out of your head, push those feelings aside once and for all, because he was obviously tired of you so it was time that you forget him. It was stupid of you to think that a boyfriend would help, because damn, it’s becoming more and more clear that Billy still had such a strong hold on you.
As Billy rushed down the hall and to the right he stopped dead in his tracks in front of the bathroom door. Just a moment of second guessing himself entered his head before he knocked on the door three times, pausing for a few seconds between each knock. “Hey, can we talk?” He asked not too hesitantly as he leaned his head against the door before opening it. “Hey.”
“Hey.” Your voice was weak as you crossed your arms over your chest, shielding yourself from Billy. Your tired eyes avoided eye contact as you looked at the floor and noticed how desperately the tile needed to be mopped. “What’s up? Are you okay?” Despite the concern in your voice, your eyes remained glued to the floor as you continued to sink into yourself. It felt so nice to be near him, even though you wanted to deck him in the face.
“No.” Billy walked into the small bathroom shutting the door behind him. Disappointment filling the air, can’t you look at him, all he’s done is look at you and you won’t even give him a quick glance. “What’s going on with you?”
“Nothing, I’m okay.” You irritatedly stated breaking your eye contact with the floor and finally looking him in the eyes. You looked so exhausted and it hurt Billy. He let you fly under his radar for far too long, he should have done this so much earlier, but he was too busy being a jealous child and pushing himself away from you. He was hoping Steve was taking care of you, but he obviously wasn’t doing much. You looked so puny you must haven’t eaten an actual meal in awhile, and your eyes were bloodshot so you most definitely haven’t been sleeping. Why didn’t he come to take care of you sooner? Billy kicked himself, how shutout have you became in the past few weeks?
With a chuckle and not being able to take the exhaustion and hurt in your eyes he painfully broke eye contact, “Liar.”
“Liar? Excuse me?”
“Yeah, a liar.” Billy bluntly said as he leaned against the exposed wood door. “Tell me what’s wrong. I know you aren’t okay.” Your eyes widened for a split second-this boy had the audacity to corner you into a bathroom and demand answers, when he himself was the main reason you were so upset-your brows knitted together and a tight and angry frown plastered itself to your face. You shifted your weight on one leg. “Nothing is wrong you, bumbling buffoon. Just get out of my way-.”
“You can’t be serious-?” Billy’s voice raising a little bit before he swallowed hard, trying to bring his temper back down. He knows he doesn’t deserve answers, but he needs them in order to fix this. “You can’t be serious?” His voice slightly cracking as he repeated himself. “(Y/N), I know something is wrong and I know I haven’t been around, but I’m here now. I need you to tell me what’s wrong so I can fix it.” You tapped your fingers against your arm in irritation. If he would just say sorry and tell you the truth. You both could get on with your lives and interact kindly with each other while you hung out with your little makeshift family. They didn’t have to know anything went down and it could remain your final little secret.
In your terrifyingly angry silence Billy stepped out of himself. Maybe this wasn’t about him, maybe it never was about him. He racked his brain for something that El or Max might’ve told him. Something that might’ve happened over the past few weeks. He remembers how they talked about how you snuck them some snacks the other day, and how you tried to tell this one joke that you couldn’t even make it through because you thought it was so funny, and how Steve was dropping you off at work and one day he just stopped. He quickly clenched his hands into his fist and gritted his teeth together, “Steve.” You raised an eyebrow and when you went to say something Billy was quick to cut you off. “He didn’t do anything did he? I swear to God if he did you need to tell me right now, (Y/N)! I’ll beat his ass-!”
Your arms flew out from your chest and up in the air in frustration, “Steve? You think Steve did something to me? This is the first I’ve seen Steve all week! I’ve been working like crazy, and I’m exhausted, and you’ve done nothing but frustrate me!” You yelled before taking a quick and deep breathe and then lowering your voice to a stern hush, “You don’t stop by work even though I’ve seen you drive by! We haven’t hung out one on one in forever! You never call! You avoid me like the black plague! I don’t know if your okay and it keeps me up at night! But I’m too stubborn to call because one time I did, and you never answered, and I just took that as you didn’t want me around! Do you not want me around? What did I do to you to make you push me away, because as far as I can go back I don’t remember doing anything wrong and it’s killing me, Billy! It’s killing me! So in short, Steve didn’t do anything, you did! You idiot!” Your fingertips rubbed your forehead as an arm crossed your chest as a shield, protecting yourself again. “It’s like I need you, or something.” You let out an airy frustrated laugh, there went not screaming at him. It’s true what they say, the truth hurts. It hurts because no matter how hard you try to lie to yourself and say if they picked up and left you’d be fine, you’d never be fine. You weren’t fine and you couldn’t handle Billy packing up and leaving because you needed him.
Billy broke, this was all his fault. Seeing you like this threw all rhyme or reason out of the window. So instead of just saying sorry and sticking whatever fragment of a plan he had, he charged into everything head first, ready to tell you; ready to make everything better regardless of the rejection he could face. He was ready to just have you back.  “Not want you around? Are you that oblivious?” His tone gruff as he walked closer to you. As your hand fell from your forehead and you went to defend yourself, but as your eyes locked and you saw him draw nearer to you; you backed up until your back hit the wall. “You don’t think I need you either? Damn, (Y/N)!” His right arm outstretched and his palm slamming straight down on the wall right beside your head, pinning you against the way. Your arms coming undone in disbelief as your face turned red, he was so close, the only thing keeping him from being up against you was his arm that was supporting his weight as he leaned against the wall. “I’m trying so hard to keep my distance from you because I can’t deal with you being with him! I can’t handle it and I don’t want to ruin it because of how happy you looked! Hell, how happy he looks! The way he looks at you drives me insane because that’s how I looked at you! How I still look at you! I want to look at you and not feel guilty because it feels like I’ve stolen something when all I’m doing is just looking at you!” Billy swallowed as he really started to examine your face. How intently you were listening to him as you looked at him oh so innocently, like this was all new information to you. Like you had no idea that he cared for you so intensely- and truthfully you had no idea. You really were that oblivious. Billy immediately felt the tips of his ears grow hot.
He leaned his head down until your foreheads connected and as his face scrunched up in pain, he said,  “And I want- I want to be the one who kisses you as you lean into my chest while we suffer through these god awful movies. I want to be the one who drops you off at work late and tries to get you to leave early. I want to take you to California and watch as you experience how annoying sand can be but how great it feels against your feet. But I can’t, not now, you’re with Steve and I gotta accept it. I’m trying, I really am trying, but it’s so hard. It was all so unexpectant and fast. I mean one day you two were at each other's throats and the next he’s holding your hand as you guys walked up the drive. You never even talked about Steve. But that doesn’t matter.” Billy said, putting himself back on track, “Steve.” He paused, this next part pained him so much to say even though he firmly believed it. “Steve’s family. This family is the only family I’ve got and I can’t lose it. I can’t lose my sister again, I can’t lose my new sister, or those dorks crowded around the TV that make way too much noise and are always screaming at each other. I don’t want to be the thing that breaks up a family.”
He pried his forehead away from yours and gently cupped your cheek and as his thumb ghosted over your lips he tried to memorize how they felt, “I need you, I’ve always needed you, and I’ll always want you. You mean the world to me, (Y/N). So keeping you around me- and this family- is my number one priority. I’ll do better I promise, you just have to be patient with me, because it is so damn hard seeing you with someone else.” He finished and as the deep breath he was taking hitched in his throat he shut his eyes tight; telling himself not to even dare shed a tear as his bicep twitched growing tired of supporting all of his weight. As his arm bent and he shifted his weight to balance on both legs, the weight of his actions-of what he just said, resting on his shoulders; he opened his eyes as he gazed into your wide eyes his brows knitted. “I’m sorry.” With a scoff he began to move away from you, but before Billy could do the simple math of two plus two equals four; your hands were gripping the sides of his face as you pulled his face to yours and your lips collided with his.
A hot and passionate kiss turned into three or four as he pulled you into him by your waist and a hand found the side of your face and his fingertips gripped the back of your head and his thumb ran tenderly over your cheek bone. The unmistakable feeling of fireworks going off as both of your bodies relaxed into each other. As the world began to fade and Billy’s hands became more and more needy as they went from running up and down your back to gripping your hips pulling you closer, and the more you turned into putty with every graze of his fingertips and the weightless feeling you felt as his tongue grazed your bottom lip.
But, a scream from the living room pulled you away from him so quickly. A light popping sound being made as your swollen and slightly pink lips were pulled away from his slightly swollen lips that had a fresh coating of a clear cherry flavored gloss. Your fingers found your lips as a light gasp left your mouth, “Fuck.” You cursed climbing over the toilet and falling into the sink. “Fuck!” You screamed, the guilt of your actions crashing down onto you like the weight of a steel beam falling on you and imprinting your skin and bones into the ground. Your stomach twirling as you reached for the door knob and a firm grip finding your wrist.
Billy’s eyes locked with yours and all he wanted to do was run away with you. If the two of you just took off that wouldn’t solve anything. His grip around your wrist loosened, “It’ll be okay and I’ll be here. I promise.” Your eyes softened as your hand gently cupped his face and you kissed him on the cheek. A soft and chaste little kiss, but nonetheless defining and tender. He let go of your wrist and you turned to the door; but before you open it you quickly turned back around and as you got on your tippy toes you whispered into his ear, “I love you, I’ll be back. I promise.” As Billy’s breathing hitched he took in your warmth, and how he could faintly smell your perfume, and how soft your face felt against his. Billy closed his eyes as he savored those three words and gripped your shirt as a smirk found his lips. He hummed as you pulled away from him and he reluctantly let go of your shirt. As he heard the door open he kept his eyes shut and didn’t open them until he no longer felt your presence in the bathroom.

____________________________
“Hey Gladys.” You automatically greeted her as you passed her on the pavement and immediately regretted it, squeezing your eyes shut. She grumbled something at you and as you passed by her, you felt a sharp whack to your back, right between your shoulder blades. You looked over your shoulder at her and she crossed her arms. “What is your problem?” You ask, feeling a little hurt that Gladys was obviously going to continue hitting you with a paper. She might be a piece of work, but you and Gladys had once seen eye to eye, you’d once been friendly enough to drink tea together and on occasion you’d help her out when you were around. But not since Bucky moved in, since your opinion differed from hers, it was enough for her to start disliking you too and as soon as you got friendly with him, you might as well have broken all of her old crockery from the way she was acting.
“You are unbelievable.” She scoffed, turning to face you. “That man is dangerous. You’re putting us all in danger.” She growled. Seriously? We’re doing this all over again? “Bucky is as sweet as anything and you know it, else you wouldn’t have the guts to throw the paper at him if you were really as scared of him as you claim to be.” You called her out, turning to face her fully. “I don’t care what your problem is with me and Bucky, but whatever it is, mind your own goddamn business.” You frown, poking her sharply in the shoulder. “I got places to be, Gladys.” You spat out her name and stalk away from her in the opposite direction.
Ascending the stairs up to your apartment, you let out a heavy sigh and trudge through the corridor to your flat. You pull out your keys and let yourself in and immediately go for a warm shower to alleviate the effects of the rough shift you had at work. Who knew working at a bookshop was so tiring?
You were almost ready to leave your apartment again when your phone buzzed.
Hey doll, waiting downstairs for ya. The guys will meet us there xx
You smile to yourself and type out a reply, telling him you’ll be down in a few minutes. You finish up your makeup, take the last sip of coffee from your mug and get your boots and jacket on, grabbing your backpack and helmet on the way out. You completely ignored Gladys who was on her way back from somewhere when you bounded down the stairs into the lobby and you shot out of the front door to see Bucky leaning against his bike scrolling through something on his phone.
Bucky was the picture of handsome. If you were to describe the most good looking man on earth to someone, you’d show them Bucky. His long hair was left down today, but it was tucked behind his ears. He wore his usual jacket, jeans and boots along with one of his usual flannel shirts which was a red and grey check one this time. You wondered how many flannel shirts he had, but they looked damn good on him. “Hey.” You squeak out, locking eyes with him. “Hey sweetheart.” Bucky shared a sweet smile with you as he pushed away from his bike, extending his arm to you for a hug and putting his phone away. You stepped forwards and let him embrace you, wrapping your arms around his middle and breathing in his woody, leather scent. “You alright, darlin’?” Bucky backed away a little and lifted your chin with his fingers to see your face. “Yeah, just had a bit of a long day.” You respond. “That’s alright, sweetheart. The show will be fun and I plan on taking you out to this sweet diner on the way home.” Bucky grinned, draping his arm over your shoulder and pressing a kiss to your temple. “That sounds perfect.” You smile at the idea of such a nice afternoon, out in the autumnal weather where the colours of the changing trees made things that much more cosy feeling to you, maybe you could cuddle up to Bucky later or things might even start to move further. You’d have to wait and see. “Let’s get going doll, it’ll take about half an hour to get there.” Bucky lifted his helmet and pushed his hair back one more time before putting it on and you did the same.
Riding the motorbike was going to be different today and you hoped you still liked it as much after you arrived at the show since it was a much longer ride than you were used to. Bucky took you down some roads with much higher speed limits. You’d be lying if you said that didn’t make you nervous and you clutched to Bucky for dear life for the first five minutes of tearing down those roads. You relaxed quickly, knowing Bucky was being careful, he would slow down to go around bends and wouldn’t overtake cars or weave between them, he kept a respectable distance between you two and the cars around you. You felt safe and you trusted him, probably more than you had trusted other people before. Being a shy person and quite comfortable with your own company, it didn’t leave much room for relationships or friends, but Bucky seemed to fill that space beautifully.
Bucky pulled up into a parking space, there were a few trucks around but the majority of vehicles were bikes, as expected. You climbed off the back and pulled your helmet off, your legs feeling quite jelly like from the ride, but you were quick to close the distance between you and Bucky in case you needed to hold onto him. “Where are we meeting the others?” You ask, tucking your helmet under one arm. “Should be a drink stall down near the entrance, we’re meeting them around there.” He replied, taking your helmet from you and leaving it on the top of his bike next to his. “You getting used to the bike now?” Bucky asked, his arm finding it’s way around your shoulders as you walked towards the entrance across the concrete. “Definitely, I didn’t almost fall over after getting off your bike this time.” You laughed, leaning your head against his arm to look up at him.
You spot Wanda in the distance talking to a few people while she leans up against Steve’s chest and you wonder if they’ve admitted their feelings in the past two days or if they’re still dancing around each other. “They’re so into each other.” You sigh, nodding your head towards Wanda and Steve. “Tell me about it, doll. They act like they’re dating all the time, but they refuse to admit there are any feelings.” Bucky chuckles, shaking his head. “How long have they been doing that for?” You ask. “Pretty much since we met Wanda when she started working at the repair shop around two years ago.” Bucky smiled at the memory. “Is that how you met all of your friends?” Bucky scratches his stubble and hums. “A fair few of ‘em, yeah.”
“(Y/n)!” Wanda suddenly spots you as you two get closer as she pushes away from Steve to greet you. Pulling you into a hug, you giggled and hugged her back, not quite realising you were on hugging terms with Wanda yet, but apparently you were wrong, not that you minded. “How are ya?” She asks, bumping Bucky out of the way to replace his arm around your shoulders with hers. You see Bucky grin at you both before moving away to greet the guys as you talk to Wanda.
“Are you two a thing yet?” Wanda asks you quietly as you both sit off to the side, watching Bucky and Steve. “I’m not sure what we are Wanda, we’re definitely more than friends, but not quite dating.” You shrug, you were comfortable with that for now if that’s the pace Bucky wanted to take, but you knew you wanted something more with him. “You like him though, right?” Wanda elbows you in the ribs and you huff out a laugh. “Yeah, I do.” You nod, not even trying to hide your feelings from her. “And you and Steve?” You turn it around on her and she looks at you surprised. “I’ll let you in on something.” She quietens her voice even more. “I love the hell outta that man, I know he loves me too but he won’t admit it. I want him to admit it.” She sighs. “Maybe he just needs a push.” You think out loud and Wanda smirks at you. “I like the way you think, (Y/n). I’m glad we finally have another girl around for me to conspire with.” She laughs. “How are we going to get him to admit to it though?” Wanda turns serious again and you sigh. “I could try talking to him, if that doesn’t work he might need a reason to admit his feelings.” You twirl your hair between your fingers as you talk and Wanda hums in response, smiling deviously across at you.
Wanda pulls you over to the group and Bucky immediately joins you at your side in fear of you feeling uncomfortable. You grip his hand as you’re introduced to everyone. There’s Sam, who appears to be quite extroverted and loud but so kind and friendly, although there seems to be a bit of a friendly feud between him and Bucky, but it all ends in laughter and pats on the back between the pair of them. Then there’s Thor and you wonder if that’s his real name or not, but if you thought Steve and Bucky were muscular and tall, Thor was a whole new level, but he is such a gentle giant and quite excitable. Next to Thor was his brother Loki, a polite and quiet individual who smiles a lot but says very little unless it’s to sass someone or make polite conversation with you or Wanda. And lastly was Peter, the youngest, he looks barely older than seventeen at most, but he seemed like a good kid who mostly stuck by Sam and Steve.
You spent some time talking with the guys, but you mostly got pulled away either by Wanda or Bucky. Wanda was becoming a fast friend of yours and you couldn’t deny that you were loving the fact you two were getting close. It had been a long time since you had a female friend.
After Bucky went off to find you both something to drink and Wanda left your side to go and greet an old friend, you were left with Steve and you knew now was your chance to see if you could get him to admit his feelings for Wanda. “You know, Wanda really likes you Steve.” You break the silence. He sighs and smiles down at you. “I know, I like her too.” He leans up against a wall and you stand in front of him, awkwardly digging your hands into your jacket pockets. “Why don’t you tell her?” You question, hoping you’re not pushing too much. “Honestly, (Y/n), I’m afraid to lose the friendship we have.” Steve looks down at his hands, playing with them a little. You take his hands in your and he looks up from his hands at you. “If you’ve both been in love with each other for as long as Wanda says you both have, you can only gain. If you leave it much longer, Wanda might feel like you don’t want her and move on.” You try to convince him and you let go of his hands, letting yours fall at your sides. Steve heaves and sigh and lets out a low hum. “You’re probably right, (Y/n).” Steve lets his head fall back against the wall. “Fuck it, you are right. I’ve gotta tell her.” He ran his hands down his face and took in a sharp breath. “Wait here for Buck, I’m gonna go and find Wanda.” He claps you on the shoulder and pushes away from the wall. “Thank you, (Y/n).” Steve says over his shoulder before walking away, leaving you alone. Well that was much easier than you expected.
You take Steve’s spot and lean against the wall. You’re not even sure where Bucky went for drinks. You can’t see Steve after he waded through a crowd of people. None of the guys are around, at least not in sight. You pull out your phone, checking for messages, but there’s none. Bucky knows he’s supposed to meet you, Steve and Wanda back here, so there’s no need to worry.
A cold breeze chills you and you shiver under your jacket, why didn’t you wear a jumper? That really wasn’t the smartest decision. You feel a little uneasy and when you look up from scrolling through your phone, you realise why. A pair of eyes are locked on you. A tall, lean looking guy wearing all black, the most smug look on his face. He had black hair that was long on top and was styled carefully. He looks at you hungrily through his dark eyes as they trail down and back up your body and you swallow uncomfortably at the way he’s looking at you. He starts walking towards you and you look around for a familiar face but you see none. “What do we have here?” His voice is deep and gravelly, but it’s not sweet like Bucky’s. “You fresh meat?” He asks, moving a bit closer. You don’t respond to him, you just scowl up at him, but you’re almost too afraid to open your mouth. “You’re a pretty little thing, ain’t ya? What are you doing all by yourself?” He shifts in his step and suddenly puts his hands on either side of you against the wall, trapping you. You start to feel panicked; you’re trapped between a wall and a guy who seems intent on making you uncomfortable. “I’m not alone.” You try to sound confident, but you’re more than intimidated at this point and you’re sure you just sound terrified. “I don’t see anyone but you, don’t lie to me.” He laughs darkly. He reaches up and takes hold of your chin between his fingers and thumb to make you look at him and you try to pull away from him but he doesn’t let you, only pushing you closer to the wall as he gets way too close to your body for comfort and you can feel his breath on your face. You can feel your chest squeeze with panic and you try to keep your breathing calm while your heart races.
“Back off Rumlow.” Bucky’s voice comes from beside you, but its not his usual, gentle but deep tone. He sounds irritated, almost angry and you see him tense his shoulders as he approaches. “She with you, then? Or you just protecting the new blood?” Rumlow quirks an eyebrow as his fingers brush across your cheek and you squeeze your eyes shut, swallowing thickly. “She’s with me, asshole. Back off.” Bucky’s tone gets even deeper as he clutches the paper tray that supports the four cups of coffee he went to buy. “You his girl?” Rumlow runs his fingers down your neck and you gain some confidence, probably from your panicked state and reach forwards, pushing him back with all of your strength and he lets you push him back. “Feisty.” He chuckles. You join Bucky’s side, standing slightly behind him. You’re sure he’s noticed how you’re heaving from breath and shaking a little from the way he looked at you when you joined him. “She is my girl. Stay away from her. She ain’t for you to mess with, Rumlow.” Bucky snarled. Wait, you’re his girl? He’s just saying that to protect you though, right?
Steve and Wanda come into view, holding hands and you look at them both. Wanda has Steve’s jacket draped over her shoulders and she looks so happy, but once they see the standoff between the two of you against Rumlow and how afraid you look, they rush over towards you. “There a problem?” Steve asks, his voice full of authority. As soon as Rumlow sees there’s more than just you and Bucky he backs away by a few steps. “No problem here.” Rumlow chuckles before backing away more and turning to disappear into the crowd.
Bucky thrusts the coffees into Steve’s hand and turns to you. “You alright sweetheart?” His voice is soft again and you nod. “Did he hurt you?” He asks, looking you up and down with his concerned gaze as he rests his hands on your shoulders. “No, just scared me a bit.” You say shakily. Bucky pulled his glove off his metal hand and took your hand in his, letting you run your fingers over the smooth surface as you close your eyes, trying to breath in and out slowly. “You’re alright, doll.” Bucky reassures you. “Fucking Rumlow. I’m so sorry Buck, I shouldn’t have left her alone like that.” Steve steps up to the two of you, Wanda’s hand in his. “It’s okay.” You breathe out before Bucky can respond and you start to feel much calmer, the cold metal in your hand soothes you. Wanda moves to your side and pushes your hair out of your eyes. “Rumlow’s a dick, picks on anyone he thinks is new, especially girls. He did it to me once too, sweetie.” Wanda speaks quietly. “He touched you though, didn’t he?” Wanda asks, tucking your hair behind your ear. “Yeah, it’s okay though, I’m okay.” You’re not sure if your saying that to yourself or your friends but Wanda pulls you against her in a sideways hug and you let her hold you.
“I noticed you get anxious.” Wanda says as the four of you perch on top of a wall, watching a bike race in the middle. Steve and Bucky are quite absorbed in the show while you and Wanda chat. “Yeah, I get panicked easily. I’m shy. I can manage when I’m running my shop because I can fake the confidence for a few hours, but it drains me. But conflict and situations like with that Rumlow guy set me off pretty badly.” You admit to her, warming up your hands on your coffee cup. “Y’know, I get anxious too.” Wanda rests her head on your shoulder as you watched the race, the rumble of bikes vibrated through your chest as you watched the bikes go by, one overtaking the other, the third weaving in and out of its position. “It gets easier.” Wanda continued. You let her talk to you about it for a while and you started to feel at ease. The comforting feeling of friends around you, Wanda talking to you about her own feelings and what makes her feel better while she rested against you and you against Bucky made you feel warm inside.
Bucky’s arm snaked around your back, squeezing your middle while Wanda remained resting on your shoulder, her hand wrapping around your arm. Steve obviously started to feel left out when he scooted a little closer to Wanda and held her with one arm and the four of you watched the race, sharing the odd thing here and there, sipping your coffees and laughing at the odd joke one of you told.
Eventually the races ended and Steve and Wanda left the two of you to do their own thing. You sat with Bucky as another show started, it was a competition about the best bikes in the show and while you didn’t care too much for the competition of it all, the pride and happiness the bikers shared for their bikes was nice to watch. Apart from Rumlow, you’d never seen a more tightly knit community of people, everyone was nice to everyone, except for the odd rival here and there.
You and Bucky start walking down a section of the outdoor area across the grass when a stall in the distance catches his eye and Bucky takes your hand in his, pulling you along with him. “C’mon doll, love when these things are here.” He says to you, but you have no idea what he’s talking about. Being quite a bit shorter than Bucky, you can’t see above the crowd like he can so you keep quiet and wait and see what he’s so excited about. Bucky weaves through the crowd with you in tow until you reach a tattoo stand and he excitedly looks at you. “Don’t worry, I ain’t gonna make you get one, but I want to get one.” He grins. “It’s been a while, I think it’s about time I got a new one, doll.” Bucky speaks softly to you. “What are you gonna get?” You ask. “It’s a surprise, (Y/n).” He smiles and you giggle, knowing he’s probably doing it with you in mind.
He talks to one of the tattoo artists and you sit nearby as he’s getting a stencil applied to his arm. The tattoo itself looks tiny from what you can see and you watch as the artist sets up their equipment to start. You wait for all of about ten minutes, watching the tattoo artist move the needle around on the spot on Bucky’s arm and then it’s finished.
When it’s all cleaned up, before it gets wrapped up, Bucky insists on showing you and you walk over to see his arm. He twists it, pointing at the red patch at the side of his tattoo sleeve where he’s added a new piece and you giggle a little when you see it, grinning up at him as you inspect it. “What? Coffee is symbolic to me.” Bucky laughs as you smile at his new, line art tattoo of a mug of coffee. “Your girlfriend going to get anything?” The tattoo artist asks. “(Y/n), you gettin’ anything, sweetheart?” Bucky knows you’ll say no. You realise he didn’t even deny when you were called his girlfriend. He’s just being polite, right? “Actually, I would like to get one.” You respond and Bucky looks at you surprised. “You sure?” Bucky asks. “Absolutely, I told you it’d be spontaneous, didn’t I?” You grin up at him. “What are you gonna get?” Bucky asks as you move over to the stall to pay for the size of tattoo you want. “It’s a surprise, Bucky.” You repeat his own words and he laughs, kissing you cheek and sits off at the side while you talk to the artist.
Getting a tattoo was quickly added to your list of things that were nowhere near as scary as you thought they’d be. It also didn’t hurt as much as you had imagined. It did hurt, and it was uncomfortable, but it wasn’t as bad as you had expected. You were however quite cold since you had to take your jacket off to have your tattoo done on the inside of your arm, just below your elbow crease on your forearm. It took a little longer than Bucky’s, mainly because there was some basic shading and by the time it was done, you were well and truly over your fear and were more excited than anything else to show it off. “Let me see, let me see.” Bucky comes over as your new tattoo gets wiped over and he peers over to see the new piece of art on your arm. It was a little stack of books with a mug sat on top. Bucky studies it for a moment and shares a grin with you. “See, coffee is symbolic.” He pokes you in the side.
You both met back up with the whole group and you and Bucky showed off your new tattoos, to which Thor was ecstatic about since it was your first ever piece and everyone else in the crew had at least one. “You’re fitting in nicely, small one.” Thor’s voice boomed at you as you showed off your new ink. “Not that you needed a tattoo to fit in, dear. What Thor is trying to say is that you really are starting to become one of us.” Loki interrupted, patting your shoulder gently and flashing you a lovely smile. You felt so welcomed by them all, and you couldn’t be happier about it. Before all of this you had been quite lonely but since Bucky asked if you needed help that day when you bought far too much food than you could carry, your life had taken a turn for the better. It had barely been a full week, but you were coming close to people like you’d known them for months or years and it made your heart swell with happiness that they seemed to instantly accept and embrace you into their fold.
You all made you way out of the show and down to the diner on your bikes. You and Peter were the only two ride sharing while everyone else had their own bikes and after the thrill from today, your interest in bikes and your new friends had you thinking about learning to ride yourself.
It was close to seven o’clock when you all filed into the nearly empty diner. A blonde haired woman stood behind the counter and watched you all come in with a big smile on her face. “Hey, Pep.” Steve was the first to greet her, a chorus of hellos followed his. Her name was Pepper, according to her nametag. You were all squished into a large booth at the back of the diner and you found yourself squished in between Bucky and Thor. Opposite you was Steve, Wanda and Loki and Sam and Peter sat on the end on separate chairs.
“So, when is (Y/n) going to become an official member of the crew, Buck?” Sam asked, everyone falling silent. “Whenever she wants.” Bucky shrugged, looking at you questioningly. “I wasn’t already part of your group?” You ask, confused. “Not officially.” Sam rolled his eyes playfully. “What makes it official? You gonna make me do some crazy dare or a challenge or something?” You ask. Thor chuckles and his giant hand is brought down onto your shoulder. “We’re not like those bikers, small one.” Thor claps you on the back and you lurch forwards and you see Steve stifle a laugh. “A biker ain’t a biker without a jacket, all we gotta do is get you one.” Steve speaks up. “But I’m not even a biker.” Leaning back on the seat, you shift about. “You don’t have to know how to ride a bike to be a biker, doll. You ride mine with me, think of it as being my co-pilot.” Bucky winks at you and you giggle. You’re Bucky’s co-pilot now, apparently, but you liked the title. “Since Buck is the leader, he gets to pick out your jacket.” Steve informs you. “That’s fine, I trust his taste. He always manages to look good.” You blurt out, but you instantly blush and look down, cursing to yourself for saying that out loud. A chorus of aww’s and a few laughs are shared while Bucky drapes his arm around your shoulders. “Do I, doll?” He drawls into your ear. “Didn’t know you thought I looked so good.” He chuckles. Bucky pulls you in close and you keep your line of sight low to avoid eye contact. “Don’t worry, sweetheart, I’m flattered and for the record, I think you always look good too.” Bucky whispers in your ear and you blush furiously. If you weren’t bright red before, you certainly were now.
Eventually the chatter about your verbal slip dies down when your food arrives and you all settle down to eat. Most of the group ordered pizza, including yourself since everyone told you how good the pizza here was and you wolfed down your food while talking to everyone about anything and everything. The conversation went in different directions, people talking about their parents, Wanda sharing stories of her brother Pietro and their adventures together and how she was going to get him to come along some time because she was sure you’d get along with him too. Sam was on a roll with jokes, most of which were responded to with groans and exasperated laughs, but the odd one landed Sam the reactions he was looking for with the whole table collapsing into laughter. Peter got himself tongue tied and was extremely clumsy with his words, even more so than you, which made you feel a little better about the times you embarrassed yourself in front of Bucky when Peter told the table about his slip ups with his crush, MJ.
Eventually you all pay, although Bucky insists on paying for your meal, which you protest about three times before giving in to his chivalrous act, which in all honesty, you didn’t mind, you just wanted to be polite because you didn’t want Bucky to feel like he had to pay for you.
Slowly making your way out of the diner, everyone says their goodbyes and you’re not the least bit surprised anymore when you receive hugs from everyone, including Loki who you had not expected to say goodbye to you that way. Wanda wrapped herself around you and squeezed tightly. “I never got to say it earlier but thank you. Steve finally spoke up about his feelings, we’re going on a date tomorrow night.” She says excitedly into your ear and you beam at her. “I’m so happy for you!” You squeal with delight. “Tell me how it goes.” You hold her by the shoulders and she nods enthusiastically. “I will, just give me your number first.” Wanda pokes you in the chest and you laugh. You pull out your phone to exchange numbers and she squeezes you one last time, pecking you on the cheek as she pulls away. “Have a good night, sweetie.” She grins at you before saying a quick goodbye to Bucky and making her way to her bike.
“So, co-pilot.” Bucky guides you along to his bike, his arm taking its usual place around your shoulders. “How about we make a little stop on the way home? I’ve got one more thing to show you.” Bucky looks down at you, a smirk playing on his lips as you walk together. “You’re the pilot.” You nudge him grinning up at him and you both lock eyes for a moment. God he looks so handsome, even in the low evening light. “Let’s go then, sweetheart.” Bucky presses a kiss to your temple and you make your way to his bike and get ready to go.
You hold onto Bucky as he drives you down the main road and then pulls off onto a little track at the side and you start to wonder where he’s taking you. After a short drive, he pulls up and stops his bike, waiting for you to get off. Taking off your helmet, you leave it on the bike seat and he takes your hand in his. Bucky leads you a few feet forwards to the brow of the hill, overlooking the town you both live in. “It’s beautiful.” You whisper as you both stop to admire the view. “Isn’t it?” Bucky pulls you close.
“I know its early, probably too early to say this, but I gotta get it off my chest.” Bucky says, looking straight ahead. “I’m falling for you, (Y/n). God I think I’m in love with you and I wanna take this slow, whatever this is but I need you to know I’m crazy for you, sweetheart.” Bucky rushes it all out and he struggles to even look across at you properly. Bucky is falling for you and you thought you were weak since you were falling for him so fast, but you’re both just as mad for each other. “Please, say something, doll.” He breaks your train of thought and you feel bad for leaving him hanging while you internally screamed about his feelings for you. “Bucky,” You breathe out. You can’t quite find the words you’re looking for and you pause for a painfully long time. “I’m falling in love with you too.” You finally manage to get out. “I want to be with you. You make me feel so safe and protected, you’re always looking out for me, you understand me more than anyone I’ve ever met.” That was it, the list of things you’d been wanting to say suddenly came spilling out and you had to stop yourself before you blurted out even more. “We can take it as slow as you want. I can wait too, if you don’t want to right now either.” This is the most nervous you’ve ever seen, or rather heard Bucky. He takes in a deep breath and turns to face you, his face slightly illuminated from the glow of the moon. “Will you be my girl?” Bucky asks. You reach up and gently stroke his cheek with you thumb, brushing your fingers over his stubble. “I’d love to be.” You reply and before you can even stop yourself, your up on your toes, your face so close to his and you both slowly lean into one another. You lips gently touch and you feel his soft skin slowly push against yours. You begin to move against his lips, his arms hold you tightly around your middle and you rest your hands on his chest.
You slowly part and you look up at him. All you feel is absolute bliss and awe, your stomach is fluttering with excitement and your heart is beating like mad, but you feel so at ease under his touch. He isn’t just any sweet guy anymore, he’s your sweet guy.

The rain didn’t clear up for a couple more days, but they didn’t mind.
She and Steve spent the mornings together at the kitchen table, Y/N writing and drawing in her journal, and Steve sketching in his notebook.
He mentioned offhandedly one day that he missed painting, and then she asked him if he would teach her how. So they went out to a little art store and bought a bunch of watercolor supplies and he taught her everything he knew. How to control the saturation of pigment with the amount of water on the brush, how to bloom the color across the page, how to layer the shades to add more depth to the picture.
She ate up every little tip he told her. It reminded him of when his mother taught him how to paint. He hadn’t had much time lately for hobbies, so he was enjoying the opportunity to indulge his artistic side. He enjoyed spending the uninterrupted time with her just as much.
In the afternoons, Steve had business to do. He’d spend hours on the phone with Tony, planning big things for the coming weeks. Not even Bucky was allowed on these calls—which annoyed him at first, but it gave him more time to spent with their girl, so he took it in stride.
It was the morning after the long night Steve and Bucky spent together, and Steve was making breakfast for them. While Y/N was setting the table, Bucky snuck up on Steve in the kitchen, pressing a chaste kiss to his neck. Steve jumped and pulled him aside into the laundry room.
“What happened yesterday,” Steve said, voice low so Y/N wouldn’t hear. He rubbed a hand over his face. “We can’t do it again.”
“What?” Bucky frowned, “Why?”
“Peggy, of course,” Steve said it like it was the most obvious thing. Steve couldn’t serial-cheat on his girlfriend. That would be unacceptable. “She doesn’t deserve that. It was a one-time-thing. Keep it between us, got it?”
Bucky smiled tightly. “Of course, Stevie. Whatever you want.”
Afterwards, he went for a long run along the beach to clear his head, and for the following days, he tried to stay clear of Steve. Truthfully, it hurt a little. He and Steve had always been on and off, but Bucky liked it best when they were on. If it were up to him, they would be on all the time.
Bucky didn’t really see the reason for Steve to date Peggy, but Steve seemed to be happy—sometimes, at least. He seemed less and less happy the past few months as Peggy expected more and more out of their relationship. Every time Steve complained about Peggy suffocating him or not understanding his obligations to the mob, Bucky wanted to yell at him—shout out, that if Steve chose Bucky, it would be better. If Steve chose Bucky, they would be happy.
Bucky didn’t know what to do about it, though. Steve didn’t want him now—he wanted Peggy, apparently.
So while Steve holed himself up in the cottage’s office in the afternoons, Bucky would seek out Y/N to distract him. Their time together was peaceful, spent cuddling together on the back porch with a thick blanket and watching the rain. They would reminisce over their childhood memories, show each other books and music they liked, and talk about almost anything that came to mind.
She tended to be more vulnerable with Bucky when it was the two of them alone, snuggled up together, and Bucky couldn’t help but go even softer for her. He loved the way she felt pressed up against him, the way she would look up at him for validation or reassurance, the way her eyes would light up whenever she spoke about herself.
Since Steve had rebuffed him, he couldn’t help but feel a little spiteful, a little dejected. His deep-seated yearning for Y/N was only growing now that he and Steve were on stricter terms.
Sometimes when Steve took her in his arms at night when they watched movies, Bucky would feel a little unwelcome spark of jealousy popping off in his chest. He wasn’t sure who he was jealous of. Certainly he wanted Steve to show that kind of affection to him, but he also wanted her in his arms almost all the time.
Seeing them curled up together so closely, he had to admit that they looked good together. Steve was the strong protector type, and she needed something like that.
He wondered if he could be that for her, but he knew he couldn’t. It wasn’t in him. Still, despite that, he couldn’t help the way he felt towards her. She was sunshine personified—how could he not love her just a little bit?
In the back of his mind, he hoped he would get the chance to get closer to her again, that the moment would come for him to take her in his arms like he had the night of her birthday.
But it was too far-fetched. He knew that.
The moment happened to present itself in the middle of the week.
They were all on the couch watching a thriller movie, and she was curled up into Bucky’s side. Bucky wasn’t even paying attention to the television. His mind lingered on how she felt against him, the feeling of her soft skin as he stroked her arm, the way her hair tickled against his chin where he rested it on her head.
He thought the movie was probably just getting intense, because Steve’s phone rang, and both Y/N and Steve jumped in their seats at the shrill tone. Her head jolted against his jaw and made his teeth click.
Steve’s brief shock disappeared when he checked the caller ID. “It’s Peggy!” he said excitedly, jumping up. “I’m going to bed, goodnight!” He ran up the stairs, and they hear him answer before he shut himself in his room.
Bucky huffed, “About damn time…”
“Why has Peggy been ignoring him all week?” the girl in his arms asked, stretching out more on the couch.
“She didn’t like that he had to come here,” Bucky answered.
They went silent once more, watching the movie—or in Bucky’s case, pretending.
“Is it my fault?”
Bucky kissed the top of her head. “No, doll. It’s not your fault,” he lied. She believed him though, and his words seemed to reassure her enough that she relaxed into him. “Let me lay down, doll. I’m getting stiff here.”
“Hmph…” Grumbling, she allowed him to maneuver them so he was laying behind her, her back pressed against his front. Bucky didn’t hesitate before wrapping an arm around her waist and pulling her close, spooning her. She was soft and warm against him, and he relished it for the remaining hour and a half of the movie, lost in the way she felt against him.
He hadn’t even realized when the credits started rolling until Y/N turned her head a little bit. “Steve’s asleep,” she whispered. It was only then that he heard the faint sound of snoring upstairs.
“You wanna go to sleep?” he asked, keeping his voice low.
She shook her head. “Not tired.”
She took the remote and played another movie, then settled back against him again. He was glad she had elected not to go to bed yet. He wanted more time with her in his arms.
Burying his face into her hair, he smelled the salon shampoo she used, and something sweet like vanilla. He stayed there, arms anchoring her against him.
His grown-out stubble scratched at the back of her scalp and at her neck and she squirmed against him. Bucky only realized the effects of her squirming when it was too late, and then the bulge in his pants was pressing against her ass.
She turned in his arms to face him. She hadn’t been paying much attention to the movie anyways. “You’re tickling me,” she pouted.
“What?” he asked, oblivious. “How?”
Her hands came up and cupped his jaw, her fingers running along his stubbly cheeks. “Your beard,” she answered, eyes fixated on his strong jawline.
She was so close to him now. He could smell her perfume, floral and fresh. Her sun kissed skin glowed in the faint light of the television.
“Sorry, sweetheart,” he whispered. “I’ll shave it.”
“No!” she said, too quickly. Thoughts of his scruff chafing against her lips and chin when he kissed her flickered through her mind, and she blushed.
Bucky smirked at her reaction. “No, you don’t want me to?” he teased.
She shook her head, fingers still playing at his beard. He wrapped his arms tighter around her, hands splayed across her lower back, stroking lightly there. She was sensitive there, he learned from the daily applications of sunscreen. He dug his fingers in to tickle her, and she squirmed against him again, trying to move away from his fingers but only pressing herself up more against his hard body. If she noticed—well, he wanted to see what she would do. It thrilled him a little that she would experience this for the first time with him.
She had noticed the hardness in his shorts, but she ignored it—not really knowing what she was supposed to do about it. She knew it happened when a man was aroused, but Bucky—he couldn’t be…
Well, he did try and kiss her. But that had been weeks ago, she reasoned, and he hadn’t made another move since. Not that she really knew how their relationship was supposed to progress from there. He had just gone back to acting like her best friend.
At least he hadn’t ignored her like Steve had, but she and Steve were back to normal, too.
Still, Bucky had to have kissed her for a reason, and the way his eyes kept flickering down to her lips confirmed as much.
“Bucky?”
“Hmm?”
“Why’d you kiss me on my birthday?”
Bucky stiffened, not anticipating that question. She hadn’t brought it up yet, but he didn’t expect her to ignore it forever.
“I…” he didn’t know how to answer. “I wanted to,” he said simply.
“But why?”
He thought about it, how he had been tempted. “You just looked so pretty that night, I couldn’t help myself.”
She mulled this over. “So you’ve been able to help yourself since? Or have you not wanted to kiss me again?”
He knew what she was doing—trying to see if he had lost interest in her. “I liked the kiss, darling. I just haven’t had the chance to kiss you again.”
“Oh.” Her cheeks were flushed now, pink and pretty. “So you want to?”
Well, she was basically inviting him to kiss her now. What else was he supposed to do?
He leaned forward and kissed her—softer than he had before, just a gentle press of his lips against hers. Then he pulled back all too soon and licked his lips. Her lip balm tasted like candy.
“There. Happy?” he asked, unable to repress the smirk on his lips.
She was pouting. “No,” she answered.
“No?” He raised his eyebrows, playing innocent. “Why not? Not a good kiss?”
“Bucky,” she whined. “C’mon.”
“What? I don’t know what you want unless you tell me.”
She huffed, then said, “I liked how you kissed me on my birthday.”
That was what he wanted her to say, and now she had fallen right into his hands. He brought one hand up to cup the back of her head, pulling her into him for the same kind of bruising kiss he had given her before.
This time, she didn’t freeze up. Instead, she worked her lips against his and matched his vigor, allowing his tongue to enter her mouth and tangle with her own. She tasted like cherries, and he groaned into her mouth, unable to help himself. She was everything he ever hoped—so receptive and willing.
He was rock hard by now, and he couldn’t help the slight press of his hips against hers. It caused her to gasp into his mouth, which pleased him. He groaned low in response, and she could feel the vibrations all throughout her body. That paired with the feeling of his stubble scratching at her skin, the feeling of his arms compressing her body around the middle—it was overwhelming, too much sensation for her inexperienced body to process at once.
She turned her head, breaking the kiss, but Bucky didn’t stop, lowering his head and kissing down her jaw and neck. As he sucked and licked at the sensitive skin, she let out the sweetest little sounds—gasps and whimpers, one hand grabbing at his shoulder and the other one in his hair. One of his hands came up to roam her body, brushing along her side, rubbing over her back, drifting down to caress her hip—he just wanted to feel her, every part of her.
When his hand skimmed over her ass, she started pushing at his shoulders. “Bucky,” she gasped as he bit at her clavicle, “Bucky, wait—"
“Quiet,” he shushed her, hoping she wasn’t loud enough for Steve to wake. He didn’t want to stop, and he certainly didn’t want Steve to catch them, so he brought his lips back up and kissed her hard, silencing her. Maneuvering their bodies just so, he shoved one of his thick thighs between her own, effectively pinning her body down with his leg and his arms tight around her torso.
She squeaked into his mouth when his thigh ground up against the space between her legs—nobody had ever touched her there before, not even herself. Her heart was racing, not sure what was supposed to come next, not sure how far he was going to go with her. It was all too much too soon, and while her body was tingling with his touch, skin burning, her mind told her it was wrong.
At the feeling of his hand groping her ass, squeezing tight, she yanked especially hard on his hair. Their lips detached at his pained gasp, which gave her the opportunity to turn her mouth away from him again.
“Bucky,” she panted, “Stop!”
It confused her when he chuckled, his laugh rumbling through both their bodies. He dipped his head, running his nose along her throat, ending with a press of his lips under her earlobe. “Why do you want me to stop, baby?” he asked, voice gravelly with lust. “You asked for me to kiss you, remember?”
“I know, but—”
“This is how I kissed you at your birthday. This is how it would’ve gone if Sam hadn’t interrupted us. You know that?”
She shook her head, mind swimming with arousal and panic. “But Bucky,” she pleaded, “I don’t know—I’m not sure—”
“Hey,” he stopped her, gripping her chin and forcing her to look into his eyes. “Don’t worry, sweetheart. I won’t do nothin’ you ain’t ready for.”
“I don’t know what I’m ready for,” she whispered, eyes dropping.
“Look at me,” he growled, voice firmer. She did, eyes shimmering with uncertainty. “Do you trust me?” She nodded, and his grip on her tightened. “Need to hear you say it, doll.”
“I trust you,” she whispered.
“Then let me take the lead.” The words sounded like a request, but his voice left no room for argument. “Quiet your mind. Listen to your body. Your body knows what to do,” he said, running his fingers gently along her side. She shivered. “You were made for me, baby.” His thumb ran along her lower lip, and her eyes fluttered closed at the sensation of his hands mixed with his words.
He truly believed it—the more he touched her body, the more he realized it. She was perfect. All of her sounds, the way she clung to him; she was so receptive to his touch, her body so responsive. The goosebumps on her skin, the way she shuddered, the unconscious clench of her thighs on his—they betrayed her pleasure, even if she didn’t realize it yet.
Plus, he had already had a taste of her—he would never be able to let her go, now.
“I don’t know what to do, though,” she murmured, lips brushing deliciously against his thumb.
“I’m gonna teach you, sweetheart.” With that, he kissed her again. He would try not to overwhelm her tonight—there was always next time.
And there would be a next time, if he had anything to do with it.
For now, he just enjoyed kissing her, touching her body. Her lips were plushy and slippery wet, swollen from the scratch of his beard. She kissed him eagerly, tongue curling with his, only pulling back when she began to run out of breath.
As he kissed her, his hands roamed her body over the fabric of her dress at her waist and hips. The material was so thin he could feel the heat of her body through it, the way her flesh yielded to his grip.
His hand slowly inched down to the hem of her dress. The skirt was very short, and their position caused it to hike up more than was appropriate so it ended just under her ass. He bypassed the hem at first, hand running down her thigh, feeling her soft skin. Then he traced up the back of her thigh and dipped underneath the hem, gripping her ass beneath the fabric.
Her ass cheek was half bare, covered only by a pair of skimpy panties. He wanted to see them, so he swiftly flipped up her skirt over her hips to bare her ass.
“Bucky!” she gasped, breaking the kiss. They both looked down at her bared bottom, her gaze was panicked while his was lustful. The panties weren’t quite a thong, but they weren’t covering much of her ass; rosy pink lace dipped down between her cheeks, lost between her thighs.
“Look at you, baby doll,” he groaned, palming at the swell of her ass. “Lookin’ so sweet for me.” He ran a finger along the waistband, tracing the top hem and then down where it clung to the round flesh of her ass, ending with a soft press to the crotch of her panties.
She was soaking wet.
“What’re you—”
He cut her off, “Quiet, baby. Let me show you what your body wants.” His finger ran across her clothed pussy. “You’re wet for me. You know what that means?” She shook her head. “It means you like it. Your sweet little pussy gets wet when it likes what I’m doing to your body. Understand?”
She furrowed her eyebrows. Did she understand? Sure, she had had sex education, but she had gone to a private Catholic school in Brooklyn that only taught abstinence. Her health class had barely covered human anatomy, and the nuns had discouraged any questions about sex or pleasure, stating that sex was solely for procreation.
Her body was telling her different, though. She didn’t quite understand why her body was reacting so much to his touch.
She knew she liked it, though. Every brush of his fingers on her skin had her lighting aflame, and now he was touching along her panties and it felt like her pelvis was getting tighter. Everything just felt so good, and she had no idea how it could get any better.
“Sweetie,” Bucky’s hand stilled. “Have you ever touched yourself here before?” He asked, punctuating the question with a press against her pussy. She gasped at the feeling and then shook her head. His index finger found her clit through the fabric and rubbed light circles over it. “When I touch here, and I rub it or press against it, it feels good, doesn’t it, honey?”
“Yeah,” she gasped, hands clutching to his shoulders. She was breathing heavier again, and the blush on her cheeks had sunk down to the skin of her breasts, making her look like she had spent a little too much time in the sun. As he kept rubbing, her head tilted back, eyes fluttering closed. He pressed down a little harder and she keened, hips jumping against his hand. “S-sorry,” she gasped, trying to still her hips.
“No, sweetheart, don’t apologize,” his voice was low in her ear. “Don’t hold back. Move your hips if it feels good. I just want you to feel good—and there’s a lot of different ways for you to do that.”
At his words, her hips twitched again. He continued to rub against her, occasionally pressing harder, occasionally pinching her clit lightly. With each new sensation, her thighs tightened on him, her hips grinding against his hand, hands fisting his hair.
Bucky kissed her lightly on the mouth, skimming his lips along her cheek and down her jaw. He nipped lightly at her pulse point and brought his lips down further to her shoulder. He nudged the strap of her dress off, pressing his mouth against the skin there and sucking.
She jolted against him, gasping loudly, “Oh!” The spot he was kissing on her shoulder felt so good, like a direct line to her groin. “That’s—”
“Shh,” he hushed her, murmuring against her skin, “Gotta be quiet. Wouldn’t want Steve to wake up, right?” However, he kept sucking at the spot, noting how it made her squirm and grind down harder on his hand.
She thought that the idea of Steve catching them might dampen her arousal, quell the burning throughout her body, but she felt no panic at the prospect. Instead, the feeling in her tightened even more, making her body tense in the best way.
She felt hot all over, her skin moist with sweat, and she felt so, so slick between her legs. Her panties were completely soaked and they slid against her lips with each movement and shift of her hips, sending more jolts through her body.
“I said quiet, baby,” he admonished her when she whined more. He gave a sharp pinch to her clit to warn her, but it had the opposite effect.
She buried her face against his neck and bit into his skin there, knowing if she didn’t, she would make more noise. She couldn’t help it, though—that pinch had her flying into some depth of pleasure she hadn’t known about before. Wave after wave of ecstasy washed over her, surging through her body. Every nerve was flaring, her skin tingling, mind going fuzzy in her frenzy.
Bucky rubbed her through her orgasm, relishing the way her whole body shook, her thighs clamping down hard on him. When she bit into his neck, it only fed his own arousal, his cock painfully hard in his sweatpants, pressed up against her writhing body.
Finally, the pleasure ebbed away like the surf during low tide, the boiling in her blood lowering to a simmer. She breathed hard against his neck, catching her breath. She vaguely registered that he was rubbing her back, his hand having retreated from her panties.
“Such a good girl,” he whispered into her hair. He pulled her back and kissed her lips gently, sweetly. “That was beautiful, doll.”
She would have blushed more if she could have. “What—”
“You had an orgasm, sweetheart.”
The nuns said that an orgasm happened during sex when a man came, but apparently women had orgasms, too. She never expected it to be so… wonderful.
It was the best thing she’d ever experienced. And she wanted more.
“Did you enjoy yourself?” he teased. He knew full well that she did.
She didn’t catch the teasing in his voice or the smirk on his face, so she nodded vigorously. “That was—that… Bucky,” she sighed, a wide smile coming over her face. She giggled, high on the endorphins from her pleasure. “That was amazing!”
He chuckled and kissed her forehead. “I’m glad you liked it, but you gotta keep your voice down. Steve’s asleep, remember?”
She nodded. “Sorry,” she whispered. She was silent for a moment, pensive, and he allowed her a moment to collect her thoughts. Finally, she asked, “Bucky?”
“Yeah, doll?”
“You… you said… that there were a lot of different ways… for me to feel good… like that…” she looked away from him as she spoke, embarrassed still. “What are the other ways?”
He smirked, smug that she wanted more from him and was going as far as to ask him for it. “I can show you everything I know, baby,” he offered, “You want that?”
She nodded quickly again. “Yes, please.”
“I’ll show you everything I can, but it’s not all gonna happen tonight. Alright?”
“Okay… Thank you, Bucky.”
He smiled, kissing her head again. “Good manners, sweetheart. I like to hear your manners.” It turned him on, in fact. His cock couldn’t possibly get any harder.
“Bucky?”
“Hmm?”
“…Is that all you’re going to show me tonight?”
He thought for a second, wondering what else he could ease her into. Something not too far off from what they just did, and maybe something that could get him off, too.
“No, honey, not if you want more. Do you?”
“Yes, please.”
He looked down at her, the lust taking over his eyes again. Slowly, he moved his thigh back between hers, pressing up tightly against her pussy. She let out a breath at the sensation, the more intense pleasure that came from the constant pressure.
“How’s that feel?”
“Good,” she sighed, moving her hips against him of her own volition, just to see how it felt—and it felt wonderful.
“Good, sweetheart, just like that,” he praised her, one hand falling to her hip to help guide her movements. The other arm wrapped around her waist, pressing her tightly against him so he could get some friction of his own as his clothed cock pressed against her hip.
Her dress had been rucked up to her waist now, so she felt him against her bare skin through the thin material of his sweats. He was hard, unyielding, and it felt so hot against her. Something wet was soaked through the fabric and she could feel the large damp spot.
They ground their hips against each other, creating a sensual rhythm as the feeling in her belly built, grew taut once again. Bucky staved off his own orgasm for as long as he could, instead focusing on getting her to her own.
He kissed her deeply, licking into her mouth and swallowing all of her little whimpers. His hands both slid to her ass, gripping her flesh tight and pushing and pulling her hips against his. Rutting his hips into her, he bounced his thigh a little bit and she broke off their kiss, panting against his mouth with a pained whimper.
Bringing his lips to her shoulder, he scraped his teeth against the delicate skin, making her keen and whine. Her hands ran from her shoulders to his back, finding the bottom of his shirt and shoving her hands below the hem, wanting to feel more of his skin on hers.
When her fingernails scraped down his back, he groaned into her neck, the pain bringing him ever closer to his finish.
“Bucky,” she gasped, her hips stuttering in their rhythm, thighs clenching together around him. She could feel it building up again, the same as last time.
“That’s right,” he rasped in her ear, “Come for me.” His words seems to spur her on, and he continued, “Look so pretty when you come. C’mon, so sweet for me, just like that.”
“Oh!” she moaned, and he pressed his lips to her again to keep her quiet. He felt her body shaking again, signaling her orgasm, and he ground his hips further into her, his body going tense as he came. His hips rutted against her sharply, and they gasped the last of their orgasms into each other’s mouths, foreheads pressed together, hips twitching, bodies slowly going slack against the other.
Finally, Bucky pulled back first, looking at her. She was blissed out again, and Bucky wished he could see her like this all the time. He kissed her gently, dominating the kiss, all resistance she had previously harbored gone.
When they pulled back from the kiss, she looked down. “Your pants are wet,” she said, voice soft and sleepy.
He chuckled, “I’ll bet your panties aren’t too well off, either, honey.” He was glad he could still get her to blush furiously, and he kissed her swollen red lips to distract her. “C’mon,” he said when she yawned into the kiss. “Gotta get you to bed.”
Separating their bodies, Bucky took stock. His sweatpants were ruined, and her pussy had even soaked through a spot on his thigh. She was in a state of disarray, so he pulled up the strap of her dress and straightened the hem before scooping her up and standing.
By the time he made it to her room, she was already falling asleep in his arms, her body worn out from two consecutive orgasms. He tucked her in, brushed a hand over her hair to tidy a few errant strands.
“Goodnight, sweetheart,” he murmured, placing a gentle kiss on her forehead.
“Goodnight, Bucky,” she said softly, sleep already taking her.
He slipped out of her bedroom and into his own. Steve was still snoring, which was a good sign, and as Bucky took off his dirty clothes and slipped into the shower, he realized he felt better now than he had in a long time.

“You almost ready, doll?” Steve called out to Y/N, worried that they would be late.
“Ya, just one more sec!” She shouted from her bedroom as she got ready.
He sighed in defeat and went to sit down down on her living room couch, figuring it was better than pacing the floor. Tonight was Y/N’s first Stark party, and Steve understood that she wanted to look her best. Though to him, Y/N was beautiful no matter what she was wearing.
“So, what do you think?”
His thoughts were interrupted by Y/N stepping out of her room and closing the door behind her. And boy, oh boy, did she look fantastic in her champagne coloured bodycon dress. It was shiny, strapless, and tight in all the right places. Steve had never seen her wear anything like it.
He let out a low whistle before standing up to close the distance between them, his black dress shoes almost touching her beige stilettos. “My god, you look beautiful, darling.” Steve told her as he wrapped his thick arms around her waist.
“Thanks, sweetie.” Y/N smiled. “You look pretty great yourself.” She said, gesturing down to his grey button-up shirt and black dress pants.
Steve smirked, “Well thank you, but I’m going to look even better with you on my arm.”
She giggled, “I’m so excited!”
“Don’t you go to celebrity parties all the time?”
“Well yes,” Y/N responded, “but this is different. These are your friends.”
Steve’s heart swelled at her words, taking pride in the fact that she enjoyed being a part of his crazy life. “Well then, what are we waiting for?” He urged, grabbing her hand and starting to walk out the apartment door.
“Wait, wait, wait.” Y/N stopped him and brought her hands to the buttons of his shirt. “Let me undo one more, it’ll look nice.”
Steve grinned as she undid the button. “That look nice enough now, baby?” He asked.
Y/N nodded her head before giving him a short kiss, in which he deepened by easily slipping his tongue into her mouth. “Come on, silly,” she broke it apart, “let’s go!”

“Alright, hmmm...” Rhodes said as he looked over the small group of people. It was an hour or so after the party ended, leaving only the main group of friends left over, aside from Thor, who was in Asgard at the time. This bunch included Clint, Natasha, Pepper, Tony, Steve, Y/N, Bruce, and Rhodes himself. “Tony!” He decided. “Since playing this stupid game was your idea, truth or dare?”
“Dare.” The billionaire spoke, without skipping a beat.
“Okay, okay. I dare you too... Oh, I know! I dare you to take off Clint’s socks with nothing but your teeth.”
The whole room erupted with laughter while Tony made a disgusted face. It was no secret to the team that Clint had a bad case of athletes foot.
“Alright Katniss, take your shoes off.” Stark added.
Clint did as he was told, and the smell of dirty feet instantly hit the noses of the group. “Good luck, Tony.” He said, wiggling his toes as bait.
“Definitely not kissing him tonight.” Pepper mumbled to Y/N, who was sitting close to her, making the younger girl laugh in response.
Everyone held their breath as they watched Tony peel the sweaty socks off of Clint’s feet, and let out a cheer once he was accomplished.
“More alcohol. Now.” Tony demanded to anyone in the room who was willing to get him it, and Y/N instantly complied. “Your too nice, thank you.”
“It’s no problem.” She smiled.
He came to a sudden realization. “No, but really. You’re actually too nice. Don’t you guys agree?” Tony looked over the group, seeing them confused at what he was meaning. He must have had too much to drink, they thought. “She never bleeds on people, is always polite, I mean, I don’t think I’ve ever heard this girl raise her voice once.”
“What are you getting at, Tony?” Steve stepped in.
He ignored the question, “Has she ever even said anything slightly mean to you, Rogers?”
“No, she’s always considerate.” The blonde man answered.
“Huh, interesting.” Tony mumbles before a sly smile appeared on his face. “Y/N, truth or dare.”
“Um...” she hesitated. “Truth?”
“Say one thing that you don’t like about Steve.”
“Tony!” Multiple people barked at him, including Steve himself.
“I don’t want to do that.” Y/N spoke honestly.
“Don’t make her, Tony.” Pepper chimed in.
“Fine, fine, fine.” He agreed. “I’ll give you a different one... Oh. This one’s interesting.”
The smirk he had on his face slightly scared Y/N. She mentally prepared herself for his question as Steve grabbed her hand from beside her.
“Would you, or would you not, date Steve if he looked the way he did before the serum?”
“Stark, that is completely-“
“No, no. It’s fine.” Y/N stopped her boyfriend.
The whole room fell silent, awaiting her answer. Steve turned his head away, not liking the current situation that they were in. The fact that his body went through such drastic changes was an insecurity for Steve. One that nobody really knew about. His body often felt like it wasn’t his own, like he didn’t deserve the lustful attention he got because of it. He didn’t deserve his naturally beautiful girlfriend, when all of his apparent beauty was fake. It didn’t come from genetics. Not from vigorous training, either. It was serum. It was fake.
“Of course I would.” Y/N stated like it was obvious, breaking the Captain away from his unpleasant thoughts. “None of my favourite qualities about Steve are the physical ones. I mean yes, he is obviously a very handsome man, but that’s not why I’m in a relationship with him. I’m with him because he’s kind, and compassionate, and brave, loyal, selfless.” She paused to turn to Steve, who was staring at her in awe. “None of that came from the serum.”
Steve was stunned to say the least. 7 billion people in this big, big world, and yet somehow he was lucky enough to get this one. This one who was with him for who he was on the inside.
“Well, that was a lot more heartfelt than I was expecting.” Tony remarked, breaking the silence.
Steve and Y/N were still staring into each other’s eyes, content smiles on their faces. He took away the hand that was holding hers, and instead wrapped the arm around her shoulders, effectively pulling her closer.
“I believe it’s your turn now, Y/N.” Natasha spoke up.
“Oh yes, right... Bruce! Truth or dare?”
*****
Steve paid the man upfront before stepping out the the car, and holding the door open for Y/N as she got out herself. A quick wave to the driver and the cab was off, leaving the couple alone in front of her apartment building.
“It had a great time tonight.” Y/N spoke.
“Me too. I... ah-Hmph.” Steve stuttered.
“Steve,” Y/N worried, “what’s on your mind?”
“Well, um... listen, Y/N.” He grabbed both of her hands in his. “I’ve never been in a long term relationship before. Not an official one, anyways. So I don’t know if this is the proper time to say what I’m about to say. We’ve been dating for five months, and this might be a little early. Heck, this might even be a little late. I’m not sure. But I think that I’m just going to go for it, and-“
“Honey, just say it already. I won’t judge you.” She interrupted.
Steve took a breath to evaluate this thoughts. “This has been weighing down on me for quite a while, actually.” He slowly spoke. “This thought of when I’ll tell you, or where I’ll tell you, and how I’ll tell you. Though deep in the back of my head, I’ve been too afraid to tell you at all. Too afraid that if I open up to someone again, I’ll get hurt. But tonight, after hearing you say all of the amazing things about me, about how you care about me for who I am, it made me realize that I can’t go one more goddamn day without telling you how deeply in love with you I am.” She gasped. “I love you Y/N.”
“Oh my goodness, Steve...”
He sighed, “Listen, I’m not expecting you to say it ba-“
“I love you too.” She beamed.
“You do?”
“Yes.” Y/N giggled and wrapped her arms around his neck. “Of course I do!”
And then he kissed her, and she kissed back, the simple action pouring nothing but love into each other’s hearts.
