Here is a college paper I wrote about BoJack Horseman having BPD for my psychological disorders class about the depictions of mental and mood disorders.
The teacher was an actual clinical psychologist and I got a 100, with the average being an 86% so take that as you will.
A Critique of the Depiction of Borderline Personality Disorder
Of Character âBojack Horsemanâ in Netflixâs âBojack Horsemanâ
PSYCH-433
By: (You Donât get to know)
4/3/2024
âBoJack, just stop. You are all the things that are wrong with you. Itâs not the alcohol, or the drugs, or any of the shitty things that happened to you in your career, or when you were a kid. Itâs you. Alright? Itâs you.â (âBoJack Horsemanâ Episode 310). Although this is something you should never say to someone with any mental illness, it seems to encapsulate what Borderline Personality Disorder and BoJack Horsemanâs apparent struggle with it throughout the series. Although an animatedâcomedyâshow about an anthropomorphic horse who was a past star in a 90s sitcom, now living life as a washed-up star may not sound like the greatest representation of Borderline Personality Disorder, throughout the six-season story, we are able to see how BoJackâs relationships can be affected by it, along with items in his past that could have brought it about.
Letâs start with how BoJack fits the DSM description of BPD, and how he might not. The requirements within the DSM require to show 5 (or more) symptoms of 9 presented. These include: Extreme reactions to abandonment, whether real or perceived; a pattern of intense and stormy relationships with family, friends, and loved ones, ranging from idealization to extreme dislike; Impulsive and often dangerous behaviors; Recurring suicidal behaviors or threats, or self harming behavior. Intense and highly changeable moods, Chronic feelings of emptiness; inappropriate or intense anger, and stress-related paranoid thoughts or severe dissociative symptoms. BoJack checks lots of these boxes, so letâs go through each one, and give an example if it applies.
BoJack is incredibly afraid of abandonment. It is shown several times throughout the series that he is scared when people he knows leaves, such as his half-sister Hollyhock, who after trying to distance herself from him tells him that he is forcing himself into her life, as he becomes a professor at the college she attends. However, nothing is more apparent of his fear of abandonment than his relationship with his roommate Todd. He constantly puts him down, as to keep him to stay at his house indefinitely. This is most apparent when Todd presents his Rock-Opera. BoJack, as his friend, tells him, âThat was, and I donât say this lightly, worse than a hundred September 11thsâ. However, once the Rock Opera seems like it might be picked up, and Todd might become successful and leave his house, BoJack sabotages Toddâs chances by getting him addicted to a video game he played as a teenager, which makes Todd fail his pitches to possible producers.
BoJackâs stormy relationships are about half of the show and I could likely fill three pages of just this. He has an on-again off-again relationship with his Agent, Princess Carolynn. His relationship with his roommate, Todd, is often broken based on the consequences of his actions, along with those of his friend and ghost-writer Diane. A romantic relationship with a co-star turned rocky when he nearly choked her to death, as she wanted to leave him, and wanted him to stop with substance abuse. Finally, his relationship with what could be considered best friend, Herb Kazzaz, ended with them not speaking for twenty years after Bojack âstabbed him in the backâ while not defending him from media heat. Herb was a comedian who helped start BoJackâs successful career, being a writer for the show he starred in, and despite being his best friend, when the media found out that Herb was gay, leading to his removal from the show, BoJack did nothing to stand up for him, because it believed it would affect his professional career.
He has a terrible sense of self, constantly asking himself, âAm I a good person?â, flipping from wanting to be a star and do more shows to rejecting offers, and leaving projects mid-shoot. In season 1, he approaches his friend Diane, asking, âI need you to tell me that Iâm a good person. I know that I can be selfish and narcissistic and self-destructive, but underneath all that, deep down, Iâm a good person, and I need you to tell me that Iâm good, Diane⊠Tell me, please Diane, tell me that Iâm goodâŠâ. Along with that, after catching his life-long dream role, of Secretariat, he leaves the film, mid-production to do something else.
His impulsive and dangerous behaviors are one of the most evident. He goes through several âbendersâ throughout the show, ranging from alcohol to prescription and hard street drugs. He is known as an alcoholic to his friends and even attends rehab (multiple times), which actually lines up with studies. âIn men, borderline personality disorder is more likely to co-occur with disorders such as substance abuseâ Along with this he has poor spending habits, such as buying a boat, and an entire restaurant when heated.
He has few, though some recurring suicidal behaviors and threats. This is evident through him driving with his eyes closed accelerating on the highway while letting the wheel go, and when he tells a current girlfriend that unless she tells him that she loves him, heâs going to hang himself, albeit in the form of autoerotic asphyxiation. This may be one of the symptoms he shows the least of, however, because although he is depressed throughout much of the show, suicide is never really his answer to it, rather filling his life with drugs and alcohol.
He does have very changeable moods as well. This is often seen through anger, which I will also cover number 8 with this, that he will be fine one minute, then filled with rage the next, such as yelling at someone over muffins in a grocery store, or going on rants when someone puts pressure on him or he doesnât get what he wants. Very rarely does this turn into physical anger or abuse, most of the time resulting in him taking drugs.
His feelings of emptiness and boredom seem to create tons of his problems. He has the need to fill his life with something, but he doesnât know what. He sometimes wants to get back into filming shows, but fails to go through with that, and fills his life with whatever he can. He has rewatched his own sitcom several times to deal with this boredom, and his emptiness can be described through his quote, âyouâre going to do everything in your power to fill that hole with friends and your career and meaningless sex, but the hole doesnât get filled. And one day, youâre going to look around and youâre going to realize that everybody loves you, but nobody likes you, and that is the loneliest feeling in the world.â (âBojack Horsemanâ 305).
Finally, are stress-related paranoid thoughts or severe dissociative symptoms. This is the entirety of episode 511, âThe Show-Stopperâ. The entire episode shows BoJackâs inability to discern reality from the TV Show that he is filming. He believes that someone in the real world is out to get him, despite it being a part of the show, and the show continues to flip between parallels of BoJackâs personal life, to the show, highlighting him losing touch with what is real and what is not.
Finally, all of this can be attributed to past trauma and relationship to his parents. His father would constantly avoid him, and when he was around, would verbally abuse him, and was even shown getting him drunk. This is after BoJack walked in on him having an affair with his secretary. Finally, he was very absent from BoJackâs life, reflected in the episode âThe View From Halfway Downâ. While dreaming about a dinner with important people from his life, his father is absent, and is instead represented by the racehorse âSecretariatâ, who BoJack idolized as a child, showing he might have turned to the racehorse as a father figure more than his actual biological father. Even more, his mother, though we arenât given too much, has also shown BPD symptoms, including heavy drinking, mood swings, and the idea of abandonment, when her mother sort of âleftâ after receiving a lobotomy. This could point to the biological risk factor of BPD, though his environmental factors are much more readily apparent.
The show, given a whole six seasons, gives great room to show how Bojack Horseman displays Borderline Personality Disorder. Although he is oftentimes depressed, and even empty, I feel the show could more highlight this part of the disorder. It is an animated comedy, it isnât meant to be a perfect one-to-one, and a person not doing anything doesnât make for a great show, This could be however because his sadness is often too quickly âresolvedâ through his anger, or his substance abuse. His self image is also up for scrutiny, because although in the earlier seasons he has a very mixed idea of who he is, he begins to settle down later in the series. Finally, his self-harming behaviors. Although he does self-sabotage through things like drinking and substance abuse, things such as cutting or any others are not as apparent. This is also the case when it comes to suicide, only appearing a handful of times throughout the show. Again, this could be attributed to the fact itâs supposed to be a comedic show, and a whole six seasons about a constantly suicidal person doesnât sound that entertaining. Overall, given that itâs put into Netflixâs comedy section, âBojack Horsemanâ does a great job depicting mental disorders, not just in how they affect a person, but also the people around them.

Some people left recs in the comments so I'm gonna use this post as my shopping list now, thanks everyone. I'll be updating it as I go
Watched it all:
Psych (đ) - 8 seasons
Elementary (đ) - 7 seasons
Bones - 12 seasons
Currently watching/watching on and off:
Columbo - 3,5/10 seasons
Castle - 7/8 seasons
X-files (it's technically a cop show, right?) - 4/11 seasons
Want to watch eventually:
The Mentalist (starting it once I'm done with Castle) - 7 seasons
Law & Order
First of all, I never even realised there were THREE Law & Order shows, I just thought they changed up the actors as time went on or they got a haircut (don't judge me, I've never watched it purposefully). But I think the one I've seen the most on TV is Special Victims Unit, and maybe a bit of Criminal Intent. So if I end up watching it, I think I'll just focus on SVU
Update 10 minutes later: actually scratch that lmao it's still running with the 26th (TWENTY SIXTH!!!!!!!!) season coming out soon and um, that's a bit too much even for me. HOWEVER. Criminal Intent is over and only has 10 seasons soooo......
Cold Case - 7 seasons
Loved it as a kid, tried watching it again a year or so ago, lost the link to the episodes, couldn't find another with subtitles, gave up. I'm definitely gonna give it another go
iZombie - 5 seasons
Started watching with my dad when it first came out, really like it, got caught up on other stuff, never picked it up again (apparently, I did watch the first season and a few episodes of s2)
The Rookie - 6 seasons (ongoing)
It's got Castle's main actor in it and my dad loves it, that's all I need to know
Monk - 8 seasons
Growing up, only my grandma watched it and my parents don't like it so I've never had a great image of it in my head, but a friend is watching it and someone recommended it on this post so I want to try
Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries - 3 seasons
Honestly I just saw a post about it and decided I wanted to watch it. Also, maybe I'll watch it between Castle and The Mentalist because 1) I tried starting it a few weeks back and couldn't 2) it's way shorter than the others
The Closer - 7 seasons
If I like it and watch all of it, I might just follow it up with Major Crimes
**I won't watch NCIS because it's too long and I grew up on it, I'm a little sick of it, same with CSI. And I also won't watch B99, cuz I don't want to right now, and I don't think it's the same kind of show anyways?
I cannot stop watching cop shows
I mean, I'm enjoying the experience. It's just that I've watched all 12 seasons of Bones, and now I have less than 2,5 seasons of Castle left to watch. I think I might just start The Mentalist next. No one can stop me, not even me
#cop shows#maddie's shopping list#not book related#at all#text post#ignore me unless you have an amazing rec for a 00's/10's cop show

Ivory Runs Red: 5/6
First off, massive thanks to the @cssnsâ, my beta @demisexualemmaswanâ, and my artist @cocohook38â. Cocohook created this amazing cover art, and she is working on something else too to go with this story. The rough sketch made my jaw drop, so I canât wait for yaâll to see it!
This part is going to be a little long, but I need to address something that I got multiple comments about. Just bear with me; this is the only way I can think to clear things up. I was really surprised to see that some people were angry at David and Mary Margaret for not doing anything to find Emma and/or "allowing" her relationship with Neal. Others simply expressed things along the lines of "I hope you explain what David and Mary Margaret did about all this." The reason this reaction surprised me so much is because I thought it was clear that they HAD done something. Why would the Golds need to get rid of police files if the Swans never reported Emma missing? Why would issues of the newspaper be missing from the library if Emma's disappearance wasn't reported on? Obviously, David and Mary Margaret did something! As for Neal, they had no idea Emma was seeing him. If you'll recall, in a previous chapter, Emma told Killian she had to sneak out at night to meet Neal. So that wasn't Snowing's fault either. Also, how would any of these characters know what David and Mary Margaret did or didn't do for their daughter? This is almost a hundred years later, and Emma's memories are dulled from being a ghost for so long. The only way I could spell out clearly how Snowing handled their daughter's disappearance would be some sort of convoluted info-dump, and I didn't want to destroy the tone and mood of the story to do that. But just so everyone knows: Yes, Emma's parents were devastated. They did everything in their power to find her, never giving up hope (which is so in character for them!). They died still believing she was either still out there or that crimes against her had gone unpunished. It broke their hearts. The Golds spread rumors that Emma was some kind of slut who ran away with a guy, and the people of Storybrooke overall thought the Swans had gone crazy. So there it is, that's the back story that I just couldn't figure out how to fit in the story, lol.
I'm not mad at the questions, to be clear. I was just surprised by them. I guess I blame the show for ruining these two as parents the last couple of seasons. Maybe that's why everyone jumped on them so fast. I was also honestly worried that ya'll would be upset with me for not addressing the topic, hence this long explanation! No one was rude by any means, so don't go trying to defend me from nonexistent trolls, lol! My feelings have NOT been hurt. I simply wanted to address the questions that were asked and the misplaced anger toward Snowing. (Not anger towards me - but fictional characters!)
Okay, now that I've cleared all THAT up, let's get on with the next chapter, shall we? And I'll go ahead and warn you: this is gonna hurt . . .
Summary: When ebony flashes gold, blood runs cold. When ivory runs red, youâll be dead. Killian Jones had heard the old rhyme his entire life. Every child did in Storybrooke, Maine. They heard it whispered in the dark at sleepovers as children; taunted as a challenge as teenagers. Killian never believed it was actually true. Until that fateful night âŠ
Rated M for graphic depictions of violence, abusive relationships, and major character death (I mean, itâs a ghost story yaâll, people are dead. BUT I promise, there is a happy ending. Trust me? *peeks from around a corner*)
Length: 6 chapters, complete, updated every Friday

Chapter Five: Run
âYouâve got to tell them what you saw - what youâve learned,â Killian pleaded.Â
Graham shook his head, his curly hair falling in his eyes as he stared at the slender hands he clasped in his. His eyes were bloodshot, his jaw sported far more facial hair than it normally did, and Killian didnât have to ask if heâd slept in the past forty-eight hours.Â
âThey wonât believe me.â
Killianâs jaw clenched in frustration. âBut if I saw Emma, and you saw her, then maybe theyâll believe -â
âThat Belle saw a ghost push Mike Gaston off the troll bridge? Theyâll believe that? Really?â Graham let out a sarcastic, bitter laugh. âYou really are just a naive kid if thatâs what you're thinking.â
âBut youâre a cop!â
âIâm still only nineteen! Theyâll think weâre just over-imaginative teenagers.â Graham paused, reaching up with one hand to trace the curve of Belleâs cheek as she slept in her drug-induced prison. âThat will land us in rooms just down the hall with our own IV full of an antipsychotic cocktail. How will I help her then?â
âYouâve fallen in love with her.â It wasnât a question.Â
Graham sighed. âHow could I not? And how could he -â He broke off, his blue eyes flashing. âIâm not sorry heâs dead. If Iâd been there and saw him hurt her -â
âShh, I wouldnât say things like that. Not here.â
Killianâs gaze fell to the bruises around Belleâs neck, and he didnât blame Graham at all. It terrified him to think what could have happened if Emma hadnât shown up.
âHistory repeats itself,â he murmured under his breath.Â
*************************************************
Killian had scarcely arrived at the bridge when headlights blinded him. He turned away, blinking, stumbling, refusing to be stopped.Â
âEmma! Emma!â he shouted. He tripped and dropped his flashlight. It broke as it hit the ground, rolling to the edge of the bridge. Now all he could see was ebony before him and radiant luminescence behind him.Â
His palms scraped against the asphalt as Liam hauled him to his feet. His brother gripped his upper arms so tightly it was almost painful, and he gave him a brief shake.Â
âYouâve got to stop this!â
Killian fought him. âI have to see her!â
Liam had always been broader than Killian with an unfair advantage in all their childhood tussles. Even now, Killian was no match for him as he lifted him bodily with one arm and hauled him over to his car.Â
âYou need help!â Liam literally tossed him into the backseat.Â
âIâm not going home!â Killian tried to scramble out, but Liam just shoved him back inside.Â
âGood, because Iâm not taking you home.â
*******************************************************
âWhy wonât you be straight with us, kid?â
Killian glared at the detective with a cynical sneer. The psychiatrist on the copâs left frowned at Killianâs attitude. The choice of words was cruel considering he was in a literal straightjacket. His vision of the two men was obscured by the long strands of dark hair before his eyes. Haircuts were apparently seen as a luxury on the psych ward.Â
âIâve answered all your questions,â Killian finally told them wearily, âyou just donât like what I had to say.â
âBecause we want the truth,â the psychiatrist, Dr. Archie Hopper, said gently. He was clearly playing the part of âgood cop.â Or âgood doctor.â Whatever.
âI told you the truth.â
âThereâs no such thing as ghosts.â
Killian snorted a laugh. âTell that to Mike Gaston.â
The detectiveâs voice took on a harsh, warning tone. âMike Gaston was the victim of murder.â
âThe victim!â Killian cried, his voice snapping up. âWhat about the bruises he put on Belle? Or the fact that I nearly died when he tied me to that bridge!â
The detectiveâs lips curled up in a lewd sneer as he lit a cigarette. âIf some horny teenager likes it a bit rough, thatâs none of my business.â
Killian fought his bonds, his jaw clenching at the detectiveâs insinuation. He was as bad as Neal Gold, maybe worse. He had to be pushing fifty at least, and a pot belly strained at his button up shirt. His eyes widened as Killian raged.
âBothers you though, I see.â He leaned forward. âNobody blames you for wanting her, kid. Nobody blames you for being jealous. But murder? Thatâs a different story.â
âI told you I had nothing to do with that!â
The detective glanced at Dr. Hopper, and the soft spoken psychiatrist took over. âKillian, start at the beginning for us. What did Belle say when she called you that night?â
âIâm telling you, she didnât call me, she didnât come to my house. I saw her early that afternoon at the library. That was it. Then my brother got a phone call that there had been an accident, and we came to the hospital.â
âYou and Belle were at the library together a lot,â Hopper said softly, âwhat did you two do there?â
Killian rolled his eyes. He hated the patronizing way the man asked the question. âWe studied. Did our homework. We were friends.â
The detective snorted again, and Killian wanted to scream. âDrop the act, kid. You really expect us to believe that you spent all that time with her, all that time with a hot chick, and you never fucked her?â
Dr. Hopper recoiled at the foul language, and Killian thought his own jaw might actually break.Â
âYouâre just as much a misogynistic, narrow-minded, neanderthal as Mike Gaston.â
The detective grinned and slapped Dr. Hopper on the knee. âYou were right, shrink, this kidâs smart.â He took another puff of his cigarette as he eyed Killian. âSmart enough to plan an elaborate murder with your knocked-up girlfriend?â
âThatâs the most ridiculous - wait - did you say knocked up?â
âHm,â the detective mused, leaning back in his chair and rubbing at his five oâclock shadow. âYou didnât know?â
Killian was horrified when a laugh slipped past his lips. Another bitter laugh followed, then another, until before he knew it, he was shaking with them. He was laughing hysterically while wearing a straightjacket. That thought made him laugh even more, and if he didnât seem like a lunatic before, he sure as hell did now.Â
âWhat the hell is so funny?â thundered the detective.
Killianâs laughter stopped abruptly and he leveled the man with an intense stare. âHistory repeating itself. Thatâs whatâs so funny.â
A smile that he knew bordered on manic curled his lips. Yes, history had repeated itself, and this time, Emma Swan had won.Â
************************************************************
They didnât have enough to charge him, or Belle, or anyone else really with Gastonâs murder. It was officially declared an accident, and theoretically, Belle French and Killian Jones were free to move on.Â
Killian wouldnât say it was easy for Belle. She had severe trauma from that terrifying night, and she ended up losing the baby because of it. Nevertheless, she had Dr. Hopperâs patient help, her fatherâs support, and Grahamâs unwavering devotion. Soon, though it would be a long time before she was truly healed, she was able to go home.Â
Killian, on the other hand, didnât really want to go home. For one, he, unlike Belle and Graham, refused to stop talking about Emma - refused to lie and say he made it up. He didnât fault his friends for it; didnât take it as a betrayal. He even understood their reasoning when they begged him to do the same and just play along, damn it. He simply couldnât do it. Emma was too real, too precious. He knew her in a way they never would. He knew the feel of her skin, the taste of her lips. He wouldnât - couldnât - let that go.
The psych ward wasnât so bad. The drugs numbed him to the point that he sailed on a sea of oblivion half the time. Heâd stopped fighting, so there was no more straight jacket, no more bed straps.Â
And she came to him. Sometimes the drugs meant he wasnât lucid enough to really carry on a conversation. On those nights, she curled up next to him on the bed. She ran her fingers through his hair and caressed his cheeks. She pressed kisses to his lips, and sometimes he could respond in kind.Â
Other times, though admittedly rare, they would talk. About everything and nothing at all. One night, they talked about their dreams for later, after high school, and suddenly Emma began to weep.Â
âI know,â he soothed, brushing her forehead with a kiss, âyou fear you can never have that. But maybe we can figure it out. If we somehow get the truth out. About your murder -â
Emma silenced him with a finger to his lips. âThat isnât it, Killian. Itâs you. I have no more tomorrows but you can.â
His brow furrowed, and she sighed and soothed the lines away with the pad of her thumb.Â
âBut not if you keep holding onto me.â
His arms instinctively pulled her closer. âIâll never let you go.â
She sighed, and sadness filled her eyes. She slipped out of his embrace and rose from the bed. Her skin grew white, her gown floated in an ethereal way at her feet. He frowned and scrambled to a sitting position.Â
âI have to say goodbye,â she told him. She said it with an edge of discovery in her voice. Her lips turned up in a soft smile even as a tear slipped down her cheek.Â
He shook his head and tried to reach for her, to leave the bed, but he had just enough drugs in his system to make his movements sluggish and ineffectual.Â
âI wonât let you see me again.â
âNo, Emma, please! I love you!â
âAnd I love you. Thatâs why I have to do this.âÂ
She was already fading away. Killian made a fist and slammed it into his thigh. Tears stung his eyes.Â
âBe happy,â she told him, âfor me.â
Then she was gone.

Maul: A Broken Evil Retrospective
On a Star Wars Amino Iâm in, I had made an introspective on why I feel that Maul, while he is a villain is not whole heartedly evil, but broken. I took from said Amino post, with a few needed edit tweaks.
Chaotic Evil
Of course given the fact he was a Sith and some of the decisions heâs made, I donât completely want to negate that in this discussion. If we were to use the alignment chart (lawful good, true neutral, chaotic evil, etc), he would probably fit best in Neutral Evil. From my understanding, Maul would fit Neutral Evil as a lot if what he does has to do with benefiting himself. Even if that means using allies (i.e. Ezra initially) and potentially betraying them (i.e. blinding Kanan once the Inquisitors were dealt with). Heâll follow things as he needs and can be calculating when he needs (like his take over of Mandalore). Heâs not spontaneous enough or lacks enough restraint to be Chaotic Evil (like the Joker for instance), nor is he as calculating and âlawfulâ to be Lawful Evil (like say Thrawn and/or Palpatine). With that said, Iâd agree that Maul has a darkness/evil in him considering all of the things heâs done. Obviously, heâs not winning any hero points by killing people like Qui Gon and Satine or blinding and attempting to kill Kanan.Â
Onto why I feel heâs broken.
Palpatine: Taken From a Young Age and Molded into what Sidious Wanted
Whether it be Talzin offering Maul as a child in Canon or his mother giving Palpatine Maul as a baby in Legends (Darth Plagueis), Maul was caught in a situation that he really didnât have much control over. Granted, his life may not have been much better on Dathomir, given how the Nightsisters used their male counterparts, but thereâs no telling what kind of life he could have had, had he not been handed over to Palpatine. Maul was molded into a weapon as Darth Sidiousâ apprentice. And Maul spent most of his younger years being molded into what Sidious wants. Only to be âcast asideâ when he is presumed dead. With Sidious being his only form of human contact/interaction, itâs fair to say that Maul feels a level of rejection/abandonment by the only person he had a bond with.
However, rather than having a level of depression because of it, heâs angry about it. For him that seems to be a common response, along with hatred and arrogance (the latter of which was used to explain how he survived the Phantom Menace). Sidious created a weapon out of Maul. And with that, a character with no real coping mechanism or knowing how to let things go.
A lot of, if not all of, Maulâs issues can be linked back to Sidious in some way. Sidious isnât exactly Mentor of the Year material. Especially with Maul. Though that could be chopped up to him being a Sith and very manipulative. He wasnât the kindest person to the Zabrak pre or post Phantom Menace (both in canon and Legends). Either way, a lot of Maulâs issues are a direct result of Palpatineâs involvement in his life.
If it werenât for Sidious, Maul would have a normal life (or whatever that would equate to on Dathomir). He would have had his family, would have been more level headed and maybe less cocky, and he wouldnât have enraged abandonment issues. The amount of grief, trauma, and hatred would be vastly different
Family: He Lost a Brother and a Mother
Letâs be real, thanks to Sidious, Maulâs lost a brother and a mother (two brothers when you count Feral, though he never got to meet him). By the time Savage came around in Clone Wars, we got to see Maul sort of build his character more than say the Phantom Menace (the novels did too, but I canât say that everyoneâs read them). We also get to see Maul exhibit more emotion where, again, the movie lacks as well as the introduction of his family, Mother Talzin, Feral, and Savage. And while Maul may not have been what youâd call an âaffectionateâ brother, he does care for Savage to the best of his ability.
Their deaths still haunted him years after the events of the Prequel Trilogy and Clone Wars. These deaths stuck with him psychologically to the point that he is still effected by it in Rebels. Which in turn, may have contributed some to him wanting Ezra as an apprentice (among other factors).
Torture After Loss
In Son of Dathomir after Maul tries to get back at Sidious, he is captured after his last battle with Sidious in Clone Wars (season 5). It starts off with Maul being interrogated and tortured by Sidious. He makes it through without faltering and escapes with the help of the Shadow Collective. That being said, we never really get to see where his mindset is. During Son of Dathomir, he gets a lot done, capturing Dooku and Grievous (taunting Sidious and working with Dooku to fight Obi Wan and a few other Jedi before escaping). However, we donât get to see the mental toll Savageâs death here. Though with everything going on, I guess there wasnât time.
Now the reason I bring this up, is because part of me felt like I should and the timing. Prior to Son of Dathomir, Maul had recently lost Savage. At the end, he loses his mother. The torture and the scheming in between shows how he didnât catch a break. And while he was able to stay strong when he had to, they never really explored how the torture effected him, which one would think he would have been.
Obsession, Insanity, Arrogance: Maulâs Faults
I do feel like I address this point. Iâve already kind of touched on his anger and arrogance (synonymously with cockiness). While training Maul, Sidious didnât consider how arrogant he had let the Zabrak become (according to Darth Plagueis, the novel). This has Maulâs Achilles Heel since the Phantom Menace. While having a healthy dose of pride never hurt anyone, a healthy dose, Maul dose not possess.
His obsession with getting Obi Wan and Sidious is another issue. This really only pops up after his apparent death in Phantom Menace. Because after that point, Maul finds out that he was replaced by Sidious (with Dooku) and that he was bested by a mere Padawan (Obi Wan). I feel like this obsessive tendency is a combination of his feelings of abandonment and having his ego damaged.
And of course, I feel like Maulâs roughly decade long battle with insanity really didnât help his psyche. While his sanity was restored thanks to Mother Talzin and Savage, I do feel like thatâs caused more harm than good. Something like that had to feel draining after getting his sanity restored. He was sitting on a trash planet and on his own. Along with not having anything from the waist down and forced to manage with what he had. Hatred may have helped keep him alive, but his psyche during those ten years didnât.
He has a lot of internal conflict in an emotional and mental sense. Unfortunately, these negative emotions, obsession and pride especially, cause him more harm than good.
The Ezra Bond: Feeling a Need to Replicate a Connection, Even if He Approaches it Incorrectly
By the time Rebels rolls around, Maul is older and calmer (though still proud). Obviously, he still wants to get back at the Empire for what they (more specifically Sidious) did to him. And at first, Ezra seemed like someone that he could use. This is an element that is prevalent, however, not the only aspect of their relationship.
According to Sam Witwer, Maulâs VA, Maul did have a (platonic) fondness for Ezra. And on top of wanting to make Ezra his apprentice, Maul wanted to emulate a sense of brotherhood between him and Ezra. For example, his phrase in Visions and Voices when Maul says â...We can walk that path together. As friends. As brothers.â How he said it shows how he does miss Savage and wants that family back.
That being said, how he approached this connection could be seen as manipulative and more than likely one sided. Sure, over the course of Twilight of the Apprentice, Ezra grows on Maul, to the point where Maul wants to make him his apprentice and has an appreciation for Ezra. However, his pride and lack of planning cause a rift between them and there was a lot of mistrust on Ezraâs part, not that one could blame him.
Subsequent episodes show that Maul is hellbent on making Ezra his apprentice through any means possible.Â
Maul lost Savage and Talzin, and Ezra was one of the first few people to trust him in years. I think itâs safe to say that, in Maulâs mind, Ezra gave him a sense of belonging or connection.
Maulâs need for a connection could be interpreted as him trying to find something good in life. However, manipulative tendencies and how he was brought up, hinder him doing that in a healthy and positive way. With Savage, he didnât need to do anything as they both had a similar plan when they met (Savage being indoctrinated into the ways of the Sith). But subsequent relationships (i.e. Ezra), Maul is at a bit of a disadvantage emotionally and morally.Â
Sure, he could relate to Ezra since they both lost people they care for because of the Empire (and by extent Sidious), but manipulation and harming Ezraâs allies hinder a smoother connection. Even if a force bond was eventually made. Ezra, arguably, could have been what he needed for what he wanted and a possible change/redemption/blank slate only for things not to entirely go as plan.
Could Maul Have Something Along the Lines of PTSD?
Now, I could do a mini theory about this as Iâve speculated that with another character before. Itâd be an interesting way to look at Maulâs psychology. Itâs one last little avenue I thought Iâd address before closing this post out. Of course, itâs worth noting that I am not a Psychology major (as interesting as psychology is). I have, however, done some research.
I do believe that Maul, to some degree, may have PTSD. But instead of exhibiting panic/anxiety, depression or easily startled, Maul has more aggressive tendencies and is easy to anger. He still lives with the trauma of the death of his brother (and mother) and flashbacks of that and other events in his life, Iâm sure heâd be effected by.
Conclusion
In conclusion, while I certainly think that Maul is no hero, his life experiences certainly effected what kind of person he became. Being raised as a weapon, abandoned, and tortured would bring any normal person way down. And because that was all Maul knew, I donât think that entirely means heâs evil. Rather, heâs a character whoâs been used and abused to the point that heâs mentally and psychologically broken. Unfortunately, that effects his life in ways that make him arrogant, hateful and obsessive. And when he tries to build bonds later in life, he doesnât know how to in a way that, while laced in trauma, has manipulative and one sided undertones.
That being said, I feel like I should round out this introspective with a little positive. While heâs definitely been through a lot, Maul is pretty resilient all things considered. Heâs cheated death and managed to live through a lot of abuse. The fact that he could keep bouncing back shows just hoe resilient and determined the character is.

RATE THE EPISODE 172 responses
This weekâs episode keeps up the high mark of the previous episodes, with 98.8% of respondents giving the episode a score of 3 or higher (overwhelmingly 4s and 5s). Nice!
It was aight.Â
It's cool
8.5/10Â
great!
Very rocky imo in terms of animation, as the cracks are beginning to show but overall look like the backgrounds and music choices were top tier.
Really good episode, I was disappointed in the jacket scene but itâs not the end of the world
loved it
It was overall a great episode I loved it.Â

WHICH OF THE FOLLOWING MOMENTS WAS YOUR FAVORITE? 174 responses
46.6% of respondents overall were most excited to see Eren meeting up with Floch and the others, with 23.6% of those respondents favoring the scene of Eren putting on his jacket specifically. 12.1% most enjoyed seeing the angry citizens shouting out the Survey Corps motto. 9.8% were thrilled to see Zackleyâs death animated. 8% were psyched to see Pieck in disguise at the end, and 6.9% most enjoyed the moment where Hitch caught Armin red-handed trying to touch Annieâs crystal.
YOUR REACTION TO EREN PUTTING ON HIS JACKET? 171 responses
Eren putting on his jacket was a scene many obsessed over when it first appeared on page and many looked forward to seeing it animated. Most of the response choices were focused on various forms of swooning over Eren and his abs. Some (13.5%) stated that they didnât really understand the dramatism and some others (another 13.5%) simply stated that they did not see much in Eren outright. Weâve gotten a lot of write-ins about comparisons to the pre-animated trailer shot of said scene. More on that in a later question.Â
i mean i understand the thirst, but eh
Prefer manga :/
The trailer did it betterÂ
Meh. Better in the trailer and the manga.
TF was that? Well it's still good in its own way.Â
YES! YES! YES! YES! Y E S!Â
both "HOOOOOLYYYYYY đł" and "so dramatic and for what?"
Trailer/Manga shot was way better
Manga shot/trailer version are way better. Dissapointed
Trailer looked better :(
Mappa only made Reiner thicc, why Eren is so frain he has 1,85! He is so strong in the manga
I don't care
Manbun.........đ
He can have my babies anytime đđ
đ»
Not as sexy as advertised; thatâs okay, though.
That scene looked weird af ngl. It looked better in the trailer đ
Me after THAT eren scene: đ€°đ»đ€°đ»đ€°đ»
Eren makes my dick rise
ON A SCALE OF 1-5, HOW HAPPY ARE YOU NOW THAT WE APPEAR TO BE GOING BACK TO LEVI AND ZEKEâS PERSPECTIVE NEXT WEEK FOR A BIT? 171 responses
Levi and Zekeâs chemistry has been the subject of praise for many, so itâs no wonder that 87.1% of respondents are rather excited to get back to seeing Levi and Zeke again. Wow!
ARE ARMINâS FEELINGS FOR ANNIE GENUINELY HIS OWN? 173 responses
Arminâs feelings for Annie have been looked at under a microscope for a variety of reasons, which is why weâre asking if you believe that his feelings for her are genuine. A plurality, 49.1% think that theyâre a mixture of his feelings for her, as well Bertoltâs. Slightly less (30.6%) believe that Arminâs feelings for her existed since before any of the recent developments. Only a select few believe that he either became interested in her post-timeskip or that his feelings are solely influenced by Bertolt. One person doesnât think Armin has any feelings for Annie at all. And a few others just donât care.
Bertmin simping for Annie and that apparently being enough for her to start considering him as boyfriend material is the fucking worst. I hate this shit. It's made me like both characters considerably less.
Uhh Armin where ya reaching?!Â
He was interested with her even before it was revealed she was the Female Titan and now that he has Bertholdt's memories, he sympathizes with her too and wants to understand her more so maybe Bert's memories intensified his feelings
His feelings for Annie are mostly his own. Bert's feelings might be in there a little, but the feelings are still Armin's.
CONTINUITY ALERT! EREN HAS HIS HAIR UP IN A BUN IN YELENAâS FLASHBACK. THOUGHTS? 173 responses
Uh-oh, Erenâs hairstyle moment. It would appear that there might be a continuity error with Yelenaâs flashback and whatever that means for the timeline. A slight plurality (37%) didnât seem to care about this, actually. But 33.5% appeared to believe that it was a mistake on MAPPAâs part that might get fixed in the BluRay version of the episode. 16.8% also believe that it was a mistake, but donât believe itâll get fixed. 9.8% think that itâs actually a retcon and that Erenâll have the man bun when Chapter 123 gets adapted in Final Season Part 2. Â
I hope it gets fixed because it's bugging me.
I really wish it was like how it was in the manga. Eren looks good with his hair down in his 16-17-year-old phase. Despite the error, it wasn't a deal breaker for the episode.
He looks totally gorgeous with his hair up in a bun, please let this mistake be
Honestly I donât mind it. It looks great either way.
Eren in a manbun is a total win for me!
WHICH PIECES OF INFORMATION MISSING FROM YELENAâS ADMISSION IN THE MANGA DO YOU WISH WOULD HAVE BEEN INCLUDED IN THE ADAPTATION? 163 responses
As with almost all dialogue-heavy chapters in this series, there are cuts. In this episode, these cuts mostly affected the conversation between Yelena and Pixis. The most yearned for cut material was Yelena never telling Eren to go along with the plan and Yelena saying that she used Floch as a âgo-betweenâ between her and Eren. Others also noted missing lines about Yelena wanting Eren to stand up for himself, Yelena stating that Zeke gave the volunteers a hopeful future and the idea that her and Eren came to quick agreement. The plurality (31.9%) however, didnât seem to mind any cuts.Â
WHAT ARE YOU OVERALL FEELINGS ABOUT SOME OR ALL OF THE AFOREMENTIONED DETAILS BEING CUT? 161 responses
There is often a sort of expectation to have everything (or almost every) line from the manga adapted in the anime, so itâs interesting to see how people react to that sort of stuff. An almost 50% of respondents stated that they didnât really care about the cuts, whereas smaller handfuls of respondents stated that the cuts either took away from the characterization of the conversation, or from the context and timeline-building purposes.Â
I'm not thrilled about the cuts, but I understand MAPPA can only fit so much in on each episode, so I'm okay with it
the yelena/volunteers plot has always been wonky and hard to follow
I donât think itâs a problem, they need to cut certain things.Â
i literally never notice but i agree that it makes it harder to piece things togetherÂ
Meh
It might seem for anime watchers that Yelena didnt do much, and Floch and Zeke that did the most part, in their own plans. Floch to betray and Zeke in predicting Eren wouldnt be on his side in some way. Yelena helped Zeke a lot to where he arrived in the rumblingÂ
All of the above
ZACKLEY WALKS OVER TO HIS TORTURE MACHINE IN THE ANIME BEFORE MIKASA ASKS WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO EREN, RATHER THAN GLANCE OVER AT IT AFTER HER QUESTION. WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THE CHANGE? 170 responses
There was a partially comedic insinuation in the manga that Zackley thought about strapping Eren to his âart pieceâ. The insinuation is possibly still there in the anime, but in a different form. So we asked how you felt about it. Slightly below a half (48.8%) stated that they thought the subtlety was still there. 18.8% thought the subtlety was lost with the small change and 8.8% believed the change made Zackley seem less unhinged. 21.8% really didnât care at all.Â
Why is this a question?
The glance was funny as fuck in the manga, but might have been awkward to pull of in the animation
They're blown up tho, does it even matter?
DID EREN KNOW ABOUT THE BOMB? 170 responses
Whether Eren truly knew about the bomb is a bit unclear to this day and with how it endangered Armin and Mikasa. A plurality (40%) believe he knew about the bomb, but did not know about his childhood friends meeting Zackley. Slightly less (30.6%) think that Eren did not know about either the bomb or AM meeting the Artist. A minority (7.1%) does believe that Eren knew about both the bomb and meeting and 21.8% simply arenât sure!
Even if he didnât know, he obviously doesnât care either way.
THERE IS SOME DEBATE ABOUT WHETHER ERENâS JACKET SCENE WAS BETTER ANIMATED IN THE PROMOTIONAL VIDEO OR IN THE EPISODE ITSELF. WHICH DO YOU CHOOSE? 170 responses
Here we go⊠The elephant in the room⊠Which Eren abs scene did you prefer? The Promotional video or the actual episode? A somewhat slight majority (57.1%) seemed to like the version seen in the promotional video more than the episode itself versus the ones who preferred the episodeâs style (42.9%).
THE EPISODE MARKS THE BEGINNING OF FLOCHâS ACTIONS AS THE VOICE OF THE YEAGERISTS. HOW ARE YOU FEELING ABOUT IT? 170 responses
Floch has always been a controversial character and the developments seen post-time skip have not been any less debatable. You may floching love him or floching hate, but heâs here and heâs staying for a while. A plurality (48.8%) notes that although they may not personally be a fan of the character, they truly do appreciate the nuance his appearance gives to the story. Just over a quarter (25.3%) stated that as big fans of the character, theyâre looking forward to all the screentime the Flochster will receive. In contrast, 20.6% despise the man and his questionable haircut and are also dreading the showcase heâll soon receive. Â
I hate Floch and will cheer again when he dies, but I enjoy his character.
I detest Floch but I'm not dreading all the screen time he'll take up.
Since he died in the manga, my hatred for him has cooled down somewhat now that I'm watching the anime.
I am once again asking for you to shut the fuck up, Floch.
WE KNOW NOW THAT EREN DID CONSPIRE WITH FLOCH TO BETRAY ZEKE TO ENACT THE RUMBLING. STILL, DO YOU BELIEVE HE DID IT BECAUSE HE HAS THE SAME BELIEFS AS FLOCH, OR WAS HE JUST USING FLOCH AND THE YEAGERISTS AS A MEANS TO AN END? 161 responses
An overwhelming amount of respondents (87.6%) stated that they believe Eren never truly saw eye to eye with Floch and his ideology and that Eren was simply using Floch as a means to an end. In contrast, 9.3% truly do think that Eren was ideologically similar to Floch and the âNew Eldian Empireâ. A select few thought you couldnât just say one way or another.Â
They both wanted to protect Paradis
DO YOU THINK IF THE YEAGERISTS, BESIDES FLOCH, KNEW ABOUT THE FULL SCALE RUMBLING BEFOREHAND THAT THEY WOULD WILLINGLY FOLLOW EREN? 167 responses
The majority (53.3%) feel that the Yeagerists would see a divide if they knew beforehand that Eren wanted to initiate the rumbling, with some sticking around for the cause and others possibly leaving because itâs too extreme. 25.1% believe that they all would have fully supported the rumbling in the name of their own survival. 15% believe that every Yeagerist already knew about the plan to commence the rumbling, and only 6% feel that they would most certainly have betrayed the Yeager brothers (and Floch) if they had known.Â
I donât know, this is a loaded question and Iâm tired.
DO YOU THINK THAT, IF THE STORY ENDS PEACEFULLY, MIKASA WILL HAVE A ROLE TO PLAY IN HIZURU? 170 responses
While this plotline may not be going anywhere in the manga (or so it seems), the reminder of its existence is brought to light again as we revisit these older moments from the manga. 32.4% feel that Mikasa wouldnât leave Paradis behind to start a life on Hizuru. 23.5% think that she wouldnât leave Paradis behind, necessarily, but will still have a role to play in Hizuru. 21.2% think it doesnât matter because Isayama has completely discarded (or forgotten) about this plotline. 12.4% donât know what to predict (if anything) and only 8.2% believe that her future lies in Hizuru beyond the main storyline.
The last two options plus me not caring. ÂŻ\_(ă)_/ÂŻ
hizuru is already rumbled, gone, but she will continue the azumabito clan in paradis
Is no one else gonna question Kiyomi's hair being sucked into her skull??? HELLO MA'AM???
Hizuru is likely flattened
WHICH SCENE FROM THE PREVIEW ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO? 171 responses
Episode 72 has already broadcasted as of the completion of this poll. For scenes that were most anticipated, 35.7% were most looking forward to seeing Levi and Zekeâs interaction in the forest. 33.3% most looked forward to Niccolo leaning straight from Gabiâs mouth that she is Sashaâs killer. 18.7% highly anticipated the Blouses learning about Gabi killing Sasha, and 9.4% were looking forward to Gabi/Falco and the Blouses gathering at Niccoloâs restaurant. Only a small amount were looking forward to Niccolo protecting Jean and Connie from drinking the wine.
ADDITIONAL THOUGHTS ON THE EPISODE?
Man the animation was gonkyÂ
no levi </3
So many faces of Niles are weirds !
Let hange aloneeeeeeee and happy, please
I have no word for this, but I feeling good
Shit is getting really real now!Â
Everyone talking about Erenâs abs and I just wanna say the music in that scene was amazing!
I loved how it was all neatly put together and fast moving
Armin looked so good. Homie walked from point A to B and i SCREAMED. Thank you.Â
i wish they included eren's warhammer escape from the prison, besides that solid episode all around, the people chanting 'dedicate your hearts' gave me chillsÂ
I can't stand Hitch at all but MAPPA made her really pretty. Re: The jacket scene The trailer version was pretty much identical to the manga panel. But I liked the version that made it into the final episode too. People have been so ridiculous about MAPPA ""ruining everything"" this season, they should stop watching if that's how they feel. I thought Eren looked great and found the sun shining on his abs funny. The scenery was better in the episode, imo. I hope they don't cut Jean's line about booze not caring about what race you are. Lmao
Meh. It's not bad of course, I just find the rythm weird and I don't really feel many emotions watching the episodes. And I was so thirsty for the jacket scene, and it turned out weird too.
Mappa pls stop drawing eren like shit he is gorgeous in the manga
MMGH SOON!! LET'S GOOOOOOO
You friccin moron, you just got zooked!
i miss eremin </3
Wish they had shown how eren used his titan powers to escape.
I'm so not looking forward to the controversy that's gonna be reignited during the EMA talk scene. I'm actually dreading it, but we'll finally get the Levi vs Beast Titan scene so I'll be fine
112 will destroy shipsÂ
I felt the animation was flawless as usual but the script was kinda boring, I expected more of these aspects: -Yelena, it was bland with the cuts -Hange, they cut something I cant figure what in this Yeagerists coup act that turned her scenes a little bit lacking? Idk something -Again the soundtrack in the episodes is so silent. The only episode so far I liked the ost beyond the Opening and Closing themes is Reiner episode. I miss the melodrama of Witstudio osts
Eren putting his jacket on in slow-speed whilst talking at regular speed is fucking trippy
Just happy to see Hitch!
It was slow and mainly plot driven. I enjoyed it despite the changes.
goddamn is that a hella well-animated explosion
more abs please
Great episode. Really ridiculous how many people overreacted about the jacket scene. It's ok to perfer the way the trailer did it but to those who say Mappa is ruining the adaptation because of minor things like this, calm down.Â
I wish the jacket scene was better But over all the ep is pretty good
Boring, but then again so was this phase in the manga.
I really like the VA they chose for Onyankopon! His voice is very warm and genuine, which suits his character well
The sunset was so aesthetically pleasingÂ
yoooo just read ch. 138 and im crying in da club :(
These MAPPA episodes have been a low point for me. Iâm trying to enjoy them because I love this story but it feels like a chore.

top three favorite scenes from any of the psycho pass seasons/films?
Weâre just going to have to go with the ones Iâve seen.
1. Ko and Akane driving back from Saigaâs. Thereâs something about that scene I love, and while there were more pauses and moments of downtime in the first season than some of the later installments (from what Iâve seen, at least), thereâs something about the quietness of it and the peacefulness that stands out. Itâs a layered conversation that implies a certain heaviness but still serves as a moment for Ko and Akane to get to know each other.
2. The scene in season 2 where Akane wonders if the scent of cigarette smoke is sticking to her is one of the more underrated ones in my opinion, and I think more than anything that just has to do with the overall quality of season 2. I love it though because weâre continuing to see growth from Akane: how much sheâs matured, changed, and how her ability to accept the world around her for what it is has taken on a different (and slightly darker) tone. That small moment when sheâs sitting alone in her room in the dark letting the cigarette burn does such a beautiful job of showing her vulnerability and the side of her that hasnât fully accepted some aspect of her life. Thereâs something so raw and undeniably human about it that it makes a far greater impact than any of the hallucination scenes (which I donât particularly like). Itâs one of those small moments that brings depth and balance to a series that likes to focus on the theoretical and ideology, and itâs also one where youâre reminded of how strong, deeply rooted, and almost incomprehensible the connection between two people can be. Itâs also more painful because that other person isnât there, and you can see how even though she continues to grow stronger itâs made a substantial impact. At the same time, we have the context as the audience to know how much more damaged sheâs become as time has progressed, and we know someone she might have shared that with previously is no longer in the picture. Thereâs no answer for her in that moment: not in the case, not in the situation sheâs in, or anything else. Thereâs an emptiness to it thatâs heartbreaking.
3. We of course have to go back to the scene where Akane has a moment to talk with Ko in the film on the balcony when they canât sleep. Itâs one of the quieter scenes in the film, but in my opinion, itâs one of the scenes where the most is actually happening. The tensionâs unbearably thick, and itâs apparent how much is on both of their minds that they want to say. Yet like reality would have it, at that point, thereâs almost no way to even begin breaking down those careful barriers. Those barriers are there and they conflict so starkly (and nicely) with the unspoken trust they still have with each other. Thereâs so much the audience is left wondering too, and we can feel them both trying to read the other, trying to unravel whatâs going through the otherâs mind until they finally start to peel back those layers themselves. The atmosphere and mood of that scene are incredible--even the setting, lighting, and the arguably more telling nonverbal communication between them that somehow showed through (this is animated--I still canât fathom how they pulled that off) makes it a standout even if it was terribly rushed towards the end.
Dear writers,
Thatâs the kind of balance and maturity we want to see.
Honorable mentions:
4. Gino complimenting Akane early on in the first season and sharing Koâs file with her is one of the things that quickly established him as a flawed and jaded human, not just an asshole. Itâs a subtle moment that brilliantly introduces some nuance with his character, and it gives us a sense of his motives that we can understand even if we donât like how heâs going about them. It gives us reason for his approach and behavior, and it pairs perfectly with the hints theyâve been dropping of his own past with Masaoka/his family.
5. Gino talking to his therapist is another standout for me. By that point we already know heâs on a downward spiral, but thereâs an added vulnerability to him that shows through in how he talks about Akane and how sheâs inspired him. The writers and animators both did an incredible job balancing the stakes that are clearly being raised with his own psyche and this newfound sense of purpose that conflict in a painfully real way.
Fantastic question! I appreciate you asking.

tagged by @littlepetbee, thank uuuu <3 i spent way too long thinking about htis lol,
Rules: pick 5 shows, then answer the following questions, tag a bunch o ppls to do it too (if yâall want to, supes no pressure or anything!)
Natsume yuujinchou (a teenage orphan who sees spirits/monsters sets out to free the spirits who were bound in magical contract by his grandmother after he inherits a powerful book, aided primarily by a spirit who appears as an exasperated fat cat (who is just as fun as he sounds). Titular character is like my Fave boy in the whole world, heâs so kind and soft despite all the hardships heâs faced, the series has very gentle pacing/character development, and each episode is a carefully crafted lil story that have often moved me to tears, chuckles, or outright chinhands of fondness as u watch natsume slowly find a home in the world and amongst the humans &spirits around him. big focus on friendships, thereâs like no romance with any of the main characters, lots of cool different creatures (most of whom arent all that scary once u get to know them), its just literally everything i could ever dream for in a show and it exists! <3)
Leverage (team of modern day robin hoods ruin rich peoplesâ lives via delightfully crafted spy cons to give back to the regular folks the rich people hurt. Extremely good, strong found family vibes, and v cathartic)
Brooklyn 99 (follows diverse cast of character who make up a NY precinct. Hilarious, immensely wholesome & groundbreaking, & probs the most lighthearted crime show besides like psych tbh)
Blackspot/Zone Blanche (spoopy french/belgium crime series set in a small village way out in the mountains surrounded by misty, mysterious and murdery woods. eerie and atmospheric, but also like one of my fave characters (everyone calls him teddy bear) keeps a pet guinea pig at work, so itâs not entirely grim and bleak)
Longmire (a modern western crime drama centering around the titular sheriff and others in their small town wyoming county, well written and lot of chracter development revealed alongside some really good case mysteries bc i love trying to figure out whodunits apparently based on a book series well adored by dads btw)
who is your favorite character in 2? (leverage) ahhh,,, this is hard... Eliot maybe? like Hardison is baby ofc, but i relate to elliot a ton (i think if i was on a team i would want to be the hitter tbh?) and love the subversion of so many action hero tropes that he is, also endlessly amused by how very put upon he is despite all his rad/random skills
who is your least favorite character in 1? (natsume yuujinchou) oh seiji matoba for sure, he can go eat a mouldy tree stump. absolutely evil nasty dude
what is your favorite episode of 4? (blackspot) the end of the road. great opening, didnt end up too devastating unlike a lot of the cases, Hermann was gr8, cool twist i hadnt super expected in the plot which was neat.
what is your favorite season of 5? (longmire) probs 1, walter reeally started to piss me off being Such A Man in later seasons, also me being extremely anxious about Henry and his life choices later, that creepy stalker storyline starting up with Someone and when Someone else in the main cast got died really suddenly and upsettingly later on as well, also when a weird relationship started between some of the characters that i really aint feeling so. before all that happened was nice (also sorry if this is super vague, im trying to avoid spoilers)
who is your favorite couple in 3? (B99) Besides Jake/Amy and Holt/Kevin (bc oviously theyre gr8) uh.. i know it was a long time ago and didnt last very long, but i thought rosa and marcus were really sweet? it brought another layer out to her character, even when they broke up that helped rosa starting to show emotional vulnerability and all, even tho it ended it was still just, idk, i liked them.
who is your favorite couple in 2? (leverage) Does trio count, cos Parker/Eliot/Harding 4 life yo
what is your favorite episode of 1? (natsume yujinchou) i have sooo many faves ahhh!!! i dont think i could pick just one on pain of death, every episode is acrefully cosntructed gem all on its own and i have too many that i love and adore to pick jsut one :((
what is your favorite episode of 5? (longmire) Dog soldier!! ive rewatched that one a ton, so so many good bits, really satisfying resolution of the case despite the shitty system that was revealed, and i rmr getting chills by the end the first time i saw it.
what is your favorite season of 2? (leverage) i guess season 1? just, idk, everything being set up and watching all these grumpies/less grumpies who have no plans to stay together start working together as a baby team, and just the joy of seeing their first heist together with the first plot twist, just.. such a delight, but all seasons that ive seen so far were all excellent, itâs a stellar show
how long have you watched 1? (natsume yujinchou) oh idk exactly, like years and years man... defs the longest out of all on this list
how did you become interested in 3? (b99) i think it was just on netflix way back in season 1 and i started watching it, loved it and never stopped? i think that might have even been before it got rlly popular lol
who is your favorite actor in 4? (blackspot) i dont rlly know any of these french peeps? but teddybearâs one of my fave characters, so hopefully the person who plays him is also cool, in which case hubert delattre (if not, Suliane Brahim does a v good job as the lead)
which do you prefer, 1, 2, or 5? (natsume yujinchou, leverage or longmire) um... real torn between natsume and leverage here, theyâre both such lovely gems that do found family so, so well.. leverage is a team of modern robin hood-esque spies with brilliant writing and exciting heists and multiple delightful plot twists every episode and great character building and so much catharticism in ruining evil rich peoples lives.
but natsumeâs title character is one of my very favorite characters ever, hes been through so much but he becomes the most kindest and thoughtful boy ever, and its so, so soft and gentle in its development of characters and their slow build of getting to know each other and becoming friends, and the interactions with the paranormal world are very rarely entirely malicious/scary, and thereâs pretty well no romance, at least like no romance for plot/with the main characters anyways, and thereâs lots of female characters who have important roles but arent sexualized/killed off for man feels/exist for romo (which sadly cannot be said about a lot of media, especially manga/anime tbh, even leverage does not win entirely on that front).. its defintiely my favorite anime ever (i dont watch loads, but literally no other one can ever come close to topping its perfection),
i guess tho, leverage is over, and natsume is still technically ongoing, so i guess for that then i have to go with natsume?
which show have you seen more episodes of, 1 or 3? (natsume yuujinchou or b99) Natsume for sure, theyâre so short its easy to power thru like half a season in an afternoon
if you could be anyone from 4, who would you be? (blackspot) i would probably want to be someone who didnt live in villefranche actually haha uh, itâs a pretty spoopity place.. even some of the characters i do like make some Bad decisions that are v bothersome. Dr. Leila barami seems to have a good head on her shoulders tho, so if i Must be a character here then letâs go with her
would a crossover between 3 and 4 work? (b99 or blackspot) oh god... the cheery upbeat department at the 99 meet up with a grim, misty tiny mountain forest village with bleak day to day life, solving crimes amidst small town paranoia and weird maybe cult-related conspiracies and honestbhly something/s paranormal and menacing going on in the woods?? i just... cant see any of the characters even interacting lol, im just picturing jakeâs confused befuddled face when he hears something weird but like x 10000
pair two characters in 1 who would make an unlikely but strangely okay couple? (natsume yujinchou) hm... i mean, one of the things i love about Natsume is that there arent really any romo relationships tbh? at least not with any of the main characters in the main storyline (so far), just like the odd one-off of minor characters (and takashiâs adopted parents ofc, but thatâs different). so, yeah, i cant really think of one (although i think the big fandom fave ship of takashi and his worst enemy is rlly.. nope, and i dont know whatâs going on there? takashi and tanama however, that would make sense, tho it is not unlikely so i cant answer this question with them)
overall, which show has the better storyline, 3 or 5? (b99 or longmire) b99! cos ya know my annoyances with some of the stuff happening later on in longmire lol, b99 just got better n better as it went along, and itâs still going :â)
which has the better theme music, 2 or 4? (leverage or blackspot) blackspot has a real good eerie atmospheric theme which is gr8 and i love it <3 (leverageâs tune is like, elevator music/cheesy jazzy spy tune, which does suit it tho lol)
and idk, anyone bored and stuck at home who wants to do this? no pressure if ur like nah but if u wanna go ahead.... @creepy-friend-of-darkness @anna-wa @rhinky-thingz @rexbasileus @aeolian-harp @warrenkoles @softbrobarnes @damnitttana @cluelesswolf @moondoggiestyle @blloodorangeisthenewblack @my-nail-beds-suck @frankiecolours @savvylikeyeahhh @lake-effectkidx @justhugharry @casualmisandry @j4ya @galaxygalpals @thesecondwarm @dealwright @knipperdollin @curlycombover @kaspbrakeddie (and if i didnt tag u and u still wanna do this, consider yeself tagged)
#littlepetbee#long post#littlepetlouis#thank u for tagging me in these <333 sorry im rarely here to do them but i appreciate em and try to keep track when im on#heather watches things#also this was a fun thing to think about bc urgh i am so tired of same old shit day in and out these days oof#natsume#k now im real emosh about natsume ahh#leverage#also come scream at me if u watch any of these ahh#longmire#askables#black spot#b99

BNHA Rewatch: Season 1 Episode 6Â âRage, You Damn Nerdâ
mysterylover123
Episode 6, with the best most hilarious title ever! Tells you exactly what youâre in for.
Finally, Bakugoâs reaction! I seriously was waiting through all three episodes for this. Like a Hitchcockian bomb under the table. Almost literally!
Bakugou .exe has stopped working.
Aizawa starts his pattern of lying to Class A to get them to do their best. He kinda stops doing this after a while, Iâm guessing because it doesnât take lying anymore, just let Wonder Duo go running off at the mouth and theyâll do the job just as well.
Momoâs first line! I think weâre introduced to her in a method meant to make her seem a bit smug and condescending, which is interesting - Momo has a similar trajectory to Bakugou in some ways, introduced as Hot Shit and embarrassment used to break that ego, so this is important to keep in mind.
Aizawa and All Might seemed like they were gonna have a rivalry in early drafts and that got dropped. Anyway, Iâm noting the timeline here, as All Might drops the info that this is April 8 (April Foolâs day was Last Week).
The friendship trio forms! Yay! (BTW I ship Uraraka and Iida, if you didnât know.) We get a quick sum up of life at UA (sob why canât my school be more like this) and then transfer on to the start of the Battle Trial Arc. Here it goes!
Everyoneâs in costume! I figured Iâd use my fave Costumes for my ranker today, so Iâll comment on them below. (BTW I loved this arc a lot the first time around. I adored how perfect it feels as a simulated Heroes v Villains exercise.)
All the detailed info on designing costumes and enrolling quirks is another thing I enjoy about BNHA; it feels like such a well-realized world, probably the most fully realized one Iâve encountered in some ways. Horikoshi is so obsessive over details, I love it.
And it actually serves as a means to illustrate character. Since they designed the costumes themselves, everyoneâs choices tell you a little something about who they are. I think that both Deku and Kacchanâs costumes are designed to look like All Mightïżœïżœïżœs - both have pointy hoods like his spiky hair, both have metal gear around the neck, etc. They look alike, yet opposite.
Dekuâs first costume is so doofy looking, though. And itâs kind of symbolic of his whole issue at this point: he wants too badly to be like All Might, so he covers up his own face with a mask that has this weird, distorted fascimile of All Mightâs hair and smile. He really needs to up that confidence!Â
This is followed by an adorable sequence of All Might trying to be a teacher and explaining the rules of the BTA. I totally empathize with All Might here; starting at a new job like this canât be easy. (now Iâm thinking about the âEven Idiots Can be Teachersâ joke in Episode 52 and laughing)
I wish there was more to comment on with the BTA teams. A few of them feel important. Kaminari and Jirou, of course; one of my ships, they hang out a lot. Also , Ojiro/Tooru, and Tsuyu/Tokoyami get teamed up here (but not Momo and Shoto or Kiri/Mina, so I refuse to call it a shipping pattern). Ashido and Aoyama have a bit of a rivalry going on that starts here. Everyone elseâs is pretty random.
And now the fated showdown of destiny! Well, the first time, anyway. I could watch these two fight all day. The whole series could just be them fighting each other back and forth and yelling while YSR plays and Iâd be fine.
Bakugou is so salty about Deku! The first time around, of course, he just comes across as an asshole. Rewatching it though, it does seem fairly reasonable to be pissed off that Dekuâs apparently been lying to him this whole time (because he doesnât know about OFA, and Deku didnât even both to lie to him like he did to his mom), and they are fighting in an organized combat mission, so his behavior here makes total sense in hindsight. Amazing how that character development works.
Uraraka is initially really blase about doing well. in hindsight, I think one of her flaws (at this stage, anyway) was that she basically didnât know what she wanted and pretty much coasted on Deku (she says as much during the sports festival). She gets over that quickly, but flaws make good characters, so I wanted to point it out.
Incoming Deku âKacchan Sugoiâ moment #1. I love this little twist, too, on the way we perceive Deku. He doesnât want revenge on Katsuki or something like that. He wants to beat him (âthe incarnation of victoryâ). Deku is not some frail flower needing protection from the world. Donât let his cuteness fool you.
Deku is so effing cool here, TBH - brilliant, tactical, strong, and brings his rival down to earth by judo-tossing him. Damn, the animation on Baku hitting the floor though, you can feel that impact. No wonder he was so pissed! (Dekuâs strategic mind is one of my favorite things about him. Also the symbolism in Baku blasting away part of his All Might mask! 1/2 of the whole!)
âFrom now on, Deku is the name of my hero!â Once again that trio of foil-y ness between Deku, Kacchan and Uraraka. I wonder if itâs a relic of when the series was originally gonna be them as a trio, a la Naruto/Harry Potter/etc, so they were designed to all foil each other in some way? Itâs not as much in the series proper, but itâs interesting nonetheless. Also, You Say Run! Down the bottle! (3rd episode in a row).
In sum, I love this episode. Costumes! All Might teaching! The Battle Trial Arc! Bakugou being crazy (I mostly gush over Deku a lot, but I love Kacchan too. Crater-sized faults and all). And of course, all of the...
BKDK Corner:
Cute flashbacks! Adorable flashbacks are adorable. Little Bakugou is so arrogant; if he was an adult he would be insufferable, but because heâs just a kid itâs cute.
Now to get into a little analysis! This ep marks the first time we actually delve into the depths of Bakugouâs psyche, and basically to sum it up: Heâs scared of Deku because he deep down knows that Deku is better than him, fearing that Deku will surpass him, and doesnât understand why. Itâs amazing how the characters introduced at this part of the series as simple archetypes (relatable hero, bully, nice girl, uptight boy) become so complex as the series goes on. Not to be taken at face value.
Uraraka changing the meaning of Deku is another moment that parallels the Deku/Kacchan and Deku/Ochaco dynamics. Again, Iâm not sure what that means in the long run, only that paralleling Izukuâs romance subplot with his main rivalry has interesting implications. Â
âSo, you know Bakugou? Heâs kind of mean to you, right?â ââYes but heâs also super amazing special awesome and cool and did I mention amazing? Let me present my eighty page thesis to you on why Kacchan is cool.â OK, exaggerating. But it is interesting how much Deku admires and looks up to Kacchan despite him being such a jerk, so seemingly the opposite of what Deku wants to be as a hero. Basic 2 sides/same coin stuff, of course. Kacchan has all the self-assurance, power and pride that Deku lacks (at least at this point).
Deku speaks fluent Kacchan and predicted exactly what he would do. He knows his S/O so well.Â
âI took notes on all amazing heroes, including youâ Subtle, Deku. Wanna make your crush a little more obvious? (also check out the BNHA smash comic of this, where he takes it up a notch and reveals what a full-blown stalker he actually is).
This is definitely their lowpoint of antagonism, though. This early part of the series, where theyâre both mad at each other. I do think that Deku never really hated Bakugou, though; he hates things about him, but not him as a person. (Deku is way too forgiving.)Â Bakugou hated him, but I think thatâs fading away in the current timeline (so weird, the last time we saw these two in the manga they were chilling on a couch together and drinking tea. Such a crazy contrast with rewatching this!)
Best Girl of the Episode: Kyoka Jiro!

Ranker: Favorite Hero Costumes
5. Nejire Hadoâs!
Iâm not sure why, but she has one of my favorite costumes of the whole series. it looks so good on her, itâs simple and tells you who she is.
4. Izuku Midoriyaâs (3.0)!
Dekuâs third costume is amazing and looks cool. Itâs sleek and powerful and badass, somehow taking that dopey baseline design and turning it awesome.
3. Camie Utsushimiâs!
Itâs so simple yet so great. Bodysuit, white boots and that awesome Shiketsu hat. Yet it works. It looks cool, even with the boob window.
2. Katsuki Bakugoâs!
Itâs so ridiculous and yet so perfect. Exactly what youâd expect Bakugo to design for his outfit. Keeping in character and suitably dark.
1. Ochaco Urarakaâs!
My favorite in the whole bunch. It looks so much like a space heroine super suit - I especially like it with the helmet. Itâs all there for her quirk, too - thereâs an explanation behind each piece of gear. (BTW, Bakugou and Uraraka had the same designer. They really lucked out!)

For the ask: 001: Doctor Who; 002: Wodehouse ship of your choice; 003: character of your choice from Psych.
Thank you!
Doctor Who
Favorite character: ...I mean, it has to be the Doctor. Heâs the embodiment of Chaotic Good, and heâs so entertaining and absurd and so deeply good at the same time. Even if there are regenerations I like less than others, I always love the Doctor.
Least Favorite character: ...Rose Freaking Tyler. I donât talk about her much, because I donât want to inadvertently start something with anyone who feels differently, but this is not a Rose-friendly space.
5 Favorite ships (canon or non-canon): Canon-ish: Ben/Polly, Amy/Rory, Martha/Mickey. Non-canon: Harry/Victoria, Jenny/the son of Kate Stewart (he only barely exists in EU, but the idea of the Doctorâs daughter marrying the Brigadierâs grandson is just really cute to me)
Character I find most attractive: ...Hm. The Eighth Doctor, maybe?
Character I would marry: Harry Sullivan. Heâs a sweet, gentlemanly dork of a Naval surgeon with traditional values--whatâs not to love?
Character I would be best friends with: The Doctor. Not so much because heâs the character most like me, but because heâs very good at Being Friends With People.
a random thought: One thing I really love about the New Series is the increasingly consistent trend--especially in Moffatâs era, I think?--of explicitly treating the TARDIS as another character. Itâs been there implicitly for a long time, but they made it much more canon and I appreciate that.
An unpopular opinion: Missy is not the Master, and Iâll never believe she is. This isnât even about her gender, but about her whole personality.
My Canon OTP: Ian/Barbara, from the First Doctorâs era. This isnât exactly controversial--Iâm not sure Iâve ever seen anything, in fandom or EU, where they werenât happily together--but I love them.
My Non-canon OTP: Master/Clara... Which is entirely the fault of my sisterâs fics. I wasnât expecting to ship them!!
Most Badass Character: ...Thereâs so many to choose from. Aside from the Doctor, maybe Sarah Jane? Aside from being one of the greatest companions, she got her own spinoff show in which it was established that sheâs been regularly saving the world on her own, she adopted two children and began mentoring three more in her fifties, and she was generally amazing for five seasons.
Most Epic Villain: ...The Master gets highest points for Presentation (as Megamind would say), and the Daleks are the most consistently menacing... But I think Rassilon scares me the most. Heâs the founder of Time Lord society, and heâs evil.Â
Pairing I am not a fan of: The Doctor/anyone other than River, honestly. (Well, or his Gallifreyan wife from pre-canon days--I assume they were a good match, from what canon evidence we have)
Character I feel the writers screwed up (in one way or another): ...A lot. Today, though, Iâm going to say Sarah again. As said above, sheâs a hero in her own right, and thereâs no force in the universe that could stop her from having adventures. Reducing her to âfemale character pining after the Doctor and unable to get over losing him,â as they did in âSchool Reunionâ, was a massive injustice to her character. (ESPECIALLY since their Classic relationship was not romantic. I mean, theyâve been shipped, of course, but their was nothing romantic in the writing or--IMHO--even the acting.)
Favourite Friendship: I think Iâve said this before, but the Doctor and the Brigadier. I love constant their friendship is, how much theyâve done for each other and respect each other, and how easily they fit back together every time they reunite.
Character I most identify with: ...I honestly donât know. I love almost all of them, but I donât think any of them click in quite that way, you know?
Character I wish I could be:Â Romana, maybe? Sheâs a Time Lady who traveled with the Doctor--thatâs a pretty good deal!
Wodehouse Ship:Â Iâm going to go with Mike/Eve here, for fun
When I started shipping them: As soon as the name âJacksonâ appeared in Leave it to Psmith, I think. I trust and support Mikeâs judgement. :P
My thoughts:ïżœïżœI wish weâd, you know, seen them together. But I like that Mike has a wife he can take care of! I think that suits them both. (I also have a headcanon that Psmith went off--to the Drones, maybe?--and dug up dirt on Rollo, and that these discoveries were what pushed Mike to propose. Because heâs an honorable boy, and I think getting him to propose to an engaged woman would take some intervention from Psmith... Also I donât like what weâve heard of Rollo.)
What makes me happy about them:Â That they exist. That they got their farm, and that their best friends married each other, so the two couples can look after each other when they need to!Â
What makes me sad about them:Â No content. :(
Things done in fanfic that annoys me:Â ...Iâve never read any fic of them that wasnât written by myself or one of this Tumblr microfandom, so... Nothing, really!
Things I look for in fanfic: Anything of them interacting with Psmith/Eve is especially fun. (Someday Iâd like to try the scene where they find out Psmith and Eve are engaged. Because A) if theyâre told soon enough, it would be the same meeting where they share the news that they got the farm, which sounds delightfully chaotic B) last they knew, Psmith and Eve hadnât even met, and C) the second Mike heard theyâd met at Blandings, heâd know Psmith was behind getting them the money. Somehow.)Â
My wishlist:
Who Iâd be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other:Â ...Iâm sure there are other Wodehouse Protagonists who would suit them, but none come to mind. Theyâre good with each other.
My happily ever after for them:Â Hmm... For them to have lots of kids, and the Psmiths as neighbors, and play cricket with their combined families every summer. Margery can visit and be the fun aunt, and since theyâre doing well financially maybe the Jackson parents will come live with them at some point? (Iâd also like them to have a chance to help Psimth and Eve out of some significant trouble, since itâs usually the other way around... I donât know what, though.)
Psych character:Â ...Iâll pick Henry, since Iâve been talking about him a lot lately
How I feel about this character: Good! Heâs a good, though flawed, dad, and a good cop. (One of the few Lawful Goods in this cast, in my opinion.) Heâs solid, and principled, and one of the few people who can really, truly keep up with/keep a hold of Shawn.
Any/all the people I ship romantically with this character: His wife, I suppose? I donât remember being a big fan of her, but he clearly still loves her, and Iâm a sucker for âdivorced couple reconcilesâ anyway... So yeah, Maddie.
My favorite non-romantic relationship for this character: Shawn, of course. Henry just... he built his whole life around raising his son, and it shows with him and with Shawn. Theyâve both affected each other so much, and I love that the show just shows them being more openly important to each other as it goes on.
My unpopular opinion about this character: Iâm not sure whatâs âunpopularâ here... But I think his training of Shawn was less about wanting him to be a cop, and more about giving Shawn A) something halfway constructive to do with his racing brain, and B) the tools to survive whatever trouble he'd get into in the future. Because, even then, Henry knew Shawn was never going to stay out of trouble.
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: I wish Shawn had told him he loved him out loud, to his face, which I donât think quite happened. Iâm pretty content with Henryâs content overall, though, I think.
Favorite friendship for this character: Iâm going to cheat slightly and say Gus. Itâs not exactly a friendship, but I love the implicit history there, and the way that Gus is practically his second kid and they both relate to each other as such. (I am also highly indignant that the âHenry & Gusâ tag apparently doesnât even exist on AO3... Distressing.)
My crossover ship: ...I got nothin. However, I have decided that in a Star Trek fusion AU (sort of a crossover!) Shawnâs mom would be a Vulcan. Thatâs the closest Iâve got.

Hereâs the final part of this story for Day 7 (Free Day) of @lardo-week! Please excuse any typos, but I am falling asleep as I type. AO3 version goes up tomorrow. I had good intentions, but Benadryl.
(Chapter 1 | Chapter 2 | Chapter 3 | Chapter 4 | Chapter 5Â | Chapter 6)
Read the entire thing on AO3
Chapter 7 - to arrive where we started
"We shall not cease from exploration
And the end of all our exploring
Will be to arrive where we started
And know the place for the first time"
âT.S. Eliot
A year after Lardo graduated, her bĂ ngoáșĄi moved into a retirement community. It wasn't quite assisted living, but assistance was available.Â
At first, Lardo's mom looked at it as a failure on her own part. As a dutiful daughter, she should be the one to look after her mother in her old age just as her mother had looked after her during infancy.
Lardo knew all too well what it was like to struggle with the idea that what you thought you should do wasn't always the right thing to do.Â
BĂ ngoáșĄi had laughed aside the idea as she patted mom's hand. "We would murder each other, my precious girl. Besides, I'm going because I want go and before I have to go. And all of my friends are there. I'll be able to play cards every day, if I like."
Oh, yes. Cards. Lardo had seen bĂ ngoáșĄi at the card table. BĂ ngoáșĄi at the card table was like Lardo at the pong table.Â
It didn't take much imagination to see a younger bĂ ngoáșĄi kicking everyone's asses at flip cup.Â
Scratch that. It didn't take much imagination to see bĂ ngoáșĄi kicking everyone asses now.
"What are you smiling at, child?" BĂ ngoáșĄi asked with an innocence that fooled absolutely no one.
"The way you're going to totally dominate the canasta table. So, do you need any help moving? I know some big strong guys who owe me a favor or five."
And so it was that all four foot ten of bĂ ngoáșĄi led a procession of current and former hockey players down the halls of the Fern Hill Retirement Community. Lardo wasn't sure what grapevine had been called into play, but all of her bĂ ngoáșĄi's friends had found some reason to pass through that part of the building.Â
Later, Lardo would swear she saw one woman fan herself like she was Blanche from the Golden Girls.
If the smugness radiating off of bĂ ngoáșĄi could be converted into energy, all of Boston would be shining like the sun.
BĂ ngoáșĄi had few enough things that none of the guys had to make more than two trips. Ransom and Holster took their leave as soon as they were done, as did Snowy, but from the look of things, Tater had gotten himself adopted by a couple of elderly Russian widows, while Bitty had locked in on the community's most avid bakers as if he were a butter-seeking missile. She wasn't sure where Jack and Shitty had gone off to, but they could look after themselves.
The larger pieces of furniture had been set where they needed to be with little fuss (except for one carved wooden table which had to be set just so), and all the boxes were placed in the appropriate spots as decreed by Lardo's clipboard.
"Do you need any help unpacking, bĂ ngoáșĄi?"
BĂ ngoáșĄi waved her off even as she dug into the one box that she had carried herself. "No... actually yes. I would love it if you got my bed made up. I have a few things I need to do before I can call this place home, and then I think I will take a nap."
It didn't take long to find the sheets and make the bad, thanks the clearly labeled boxes. When she returned to the living room, she smiled to see the old photo of her ĂŽng ngoáșĄi already set up on the carved wood table, right where it belonged, surrounded by the familiar vases, bowls, and incense burner.Â
But bĂ ngoáșĄi wasn't done with whatever it was she needed to make this place a home. She held a large framed picture to her chest and was clearly deciding between two possible walls.Â
"There, I think," bĂ ngoáșĄi said, pointing to the wall next to the kitchenette. "Can you help me hang this?"
This was a framed picture of a blobby, spiky animalâsupposedly a triceratopsâin faded pinks, yellows and oranges. It was an unskilled drawing, but Lardo could see the beginnings of a sense of color, of form, of light.
"Yeah," she said, voice thick. "Let's do this."
There was measuring, and marking, and squabbling, and a couple of bent nails, but eventually the picture was up.
"There. Now this is home," bĂ ngoáșĄi declared. Her late husband's photo and her granddaughter's drawing were both where they should be, and apparently that was all it took.
Lardo hugged her gently, remembering when bĂ ngoáșĄi had been the taller one and she was the smaller one.Â
Lardo had been Larissa back then, a little girl who had loved dinosaurs almost as much as she loved her bĂ ngoáșĄi.
"Do you remember how you always said you wanted to be a paleontologist when you grew up?"
Lardo sort of remembered that, but what she actually remembered wasâ
"You always used to get so mad when your parents told people how you used to pronounce it!" bĂ ngoáșĄi said gleefully.
"Arrrgh!" Lardo cringed in embarrassment and tugged at her hair. "They said it was cute! I hate being called cute!"Â
The way bĂ ngoáșĄi smiled said that she knew damned well just how much Lardo hated itâand found it cute.
"I remember how much you loved making up stories with your toy dinosaurs. Do you still have that big plush one?"
"Mr. Steggy?" She scoffed. "Heck yeah I still have him!"
"Good. I thought it was a little sad when you stopped being so interested in dinosaurs."
"Mr. Steggy is forever. And now I'm into ducks, which are, like, stealth dinosaurs."
She still remembered the little thrill when she learned that dinosaurs were still around in the form of birds.Â
They hadn't gone extinct.
They just weren't what you expected them to turn out to be. But they were still there.
She hugged her bĂ ngoáșĄi goodbye and went to collect her boys.
The others assumed that her thoughtful mood on the way home was due to the idea of moving her grandmother into a retirement community, but that was only part of it.
She thought about all the times her family asked her what she wanted to be when she grew up.Â
At first, she had wanted to be a paleontologist the way other kids wanted to be astronauts, back when it wasn't the reality of the job you wanted but the cool factor of ACTUAL MONSTERS or SPACESHIPS.
Then, there was the dream of being an artist.
And fuck it, she was an artist. She just also happened to be an equipment manager for a professional hockey team, a job that wasn't in any way, shape, or form on her list of dream jobs at any point ever.
But, via a 'happy accident,' George had mentioned something to Thirdy about needing to train up a replacement for Stu, and Thirdy had said something to Marty, and...
And because a previous 'happy accident' had led her to Jack and a job that got her away from that miserable deep-fryer, here she was.
She had taken to the job like a duck-billed dinosaur to water. It hadn't taken long for the team to take to her. Of course it helped that Jack already loved her, Tater already adored her, Snowy already admired her, and Poots already (rightfully) feared her.
She was jolted out of her musings when Jack pulled up in front of Haus 2.0.
"Later, gator?" Shitty asked. Lardo didn't say anything, but gave him a lingering kiss.Â
With training camp starting up soon, it made more sense to crash with Jack and Bitty during the week. In another year, she and Shitty would probably be ready to find a place of their own, so it didn't make sense to move into our out of either place completely.
Jack and Bitty had to go on a grocery run, which Lardo suspected was an excuse to give her some alone time.
Jack was a good bro, really he was.
Lardo let herself into the condo. The picture hanging next to the kitchen pass-through was familiar enough that she didn't usually notice it anymore, but now she stopped to look at it.
Bitty had declared that Still Life With a Fuckton of Jam was one of his favorite graduation presents, and the fact that he hung it by his beloved kitchen said more than a 'thank you' ever could.
She passed by her Junior Show sky-scape as she cut through the living room. She loved that it was owned by someone who saw it being made and who wanted to hang on to the memory of the making of it.
No, this wasn't what she pictured when she thought about being an artist when she grew up, but that dream was still very much alive. Just not in the way she had expected it to be.
It was better. She would never say this out loud, because it would completely nuke her cred, but it was all tangled up in love.Â
Even when she was doing work for hire, it was still about the people. She still went to the Macey's used bookstore where the steps she had painted enticed young readers up to a nook furnished with cushions and hidey-holes. And every time, Macey still gushed about how she had wanted a staircase like that in her bookstore ever since she saw one as a child, and now she had the store of her dreams, and wasn't it wonderful?
She was halfway through another commission, this one for a friend of Snowy's who needed a re-do on his mask after getting traded to the Aeros. Jukes was super-psyched about the retro-futurist space-themed design she was doing in the Aeros' silver and red, so psyched Lardo half-suspected that kid-Jukes would have said he wanted to be an astronaut when he grew up (possibly a hockey-playing astronautâhe was Canadian, after all).
Snowy had taken one look at the design and had declared that by the end of the season, Lardo would have a three year waiting list, and that if he weren't so superstitious about his current mask, he'd be next in line after Jukes.
Having another job (one that she loved) gave her the freedom to pick and choose the art she wanted to do the way she wanted to do it and for the people she wanted to do it for. One day, she might be able to do it full time and she really hoped she would get there.
The important thing was, she was an artist. It was an essential part of who she was and who she would be, just like Bitty didn't need to own a bakery to be a baker.
She flopped down on the bed in Jack's guest room (which was already halfway to being 'her' room). She was exhausted enough to want to nap, but too keyed up to do so.
So, she picked up her bedside sketch pad, flipped to a mostly empty page, and began doodling.
She started with a triceratops.

The Consequence of Anger - Part 1
This is an AU One Shot in two parts, it takes place about 2 years past 8:4 when Ty hits Ahmed.
âMs. Fleming ?â The black suited man said to her as she approached with the skycap and several suitcases.
âIâm sorry Iâm late, the flight was delayed.â Amy said apologetically.
âWe were informed, Iâm Bruce and I havenât been here that long. Letâs get to the car and get you to Hudson.â He said after glancing down at the paper he held.
Amy was quiet and checked her messages. It had been two years since sheâd been home and she watched the miles fade through Calgary and then south. She watched the mountains and the trees roll by and sighed. She had no idea what she would do when she got to Heartland.
She hadnât ostracized herself from her family, they spoke often, rote stuff, nothing deep. Lou and Peter had divorced, she was building a diner in NY, Lisa was now living in the house, Georgie was show jumping again and Ty had an apartment in town.
Ty, they didnât really talk much and after the 5th or 6th argument she had with him, she couldnât take it anymore. The finger pointing, his guilt, it was all too much for her, there was nothing she could do. Amy knew when she made the decision that it wasnât something Ty would ever be able to deal with, the root of his problem with her, her ability to earn. She was wary of it when he told her that he was uncomfortable buying a place on her money, the whole idea that this is what couples do, support each other as employment or circumstances allowed, not Ty, his abuse and the curse of his youth dug deep into his psyche and his needs.
Charger didnât surprise her, get rich quick was his way out. He overlooked that they had screwed up and she bailed them out by the skin of her teeth. Neither of them offered her a cut, as the rider 15% would have been normal, Â looking back this fell right into place with other things Ty seemed to not bother thinking about. He lived at a ranch she supported for years, he never seemed to get that, Jack was his savior, it was his ranch, it was mostly Amyâs money.
They made it extremely hard for her to visit and so she opted not to. She saw Lisa twice in Antwerp during her visits to Toulon, her grandfather even came along for one. Lou and the girls came once over the summer.
She vividly remembered the RCMP officers showing up to look for him a few hours after he had hit Ahmed. He wasnât there of course having driven away without even hearing her out.
They stayed for a few minutes and spoke with the family who reluctantly informed the officer questioning them that Ty had indeed hit the Prince but only after words had been spoken. Shortly after they were forced to admit that Ahmed was leaving when Ty ran out, turned him and hit him, twice.
Bail was set high and the charges piled on. Ahmed was a Prince, a diplomat and very high ranked. He was considered a guest in Canada and his people demanded justice, someone had assaulted their Prince.
She could see the looks on her familyâs faces when they deemed to speak with her, especially Jack, her grandfather. Apparently Ahmedâs delusions were her fault.
Walking into the house from the barn she stopped as the conversation going on at the table quieted. They had been discussing what Tyâs lawyer had said âjail time for sureâ, how long would be a factor decided by how much other forces outside of Hudson pushed. This was a diplomatic incident with a life of itâs own.
âAmy, howâs that new client horse of yours ?â
âReally Grandpa, do you even care ?â
âWhatâs that supposed to mean ?â
âIt means that you were talking about Ty, my fiancĂ© and jail, and when I walk in you stop as if any of this is my fault.â
Jack stared at her.
âSay it dammit, did I come on to him, did we walk naked on the beach, sneak into the stalls, come on what is it you think I did ?â
âAmy, no one thinks that.â
âThen why stop talking ?â
âAmy.â
âWhat Lou have the words you must have done something have a different meaning now or that they all donât think it ?â
âI didnât mean âŠâ
âOf course you did.â Amy said seething. âDadâs abandoned ship altogether and you all sit whispering, how can we help Ty ? Well you canât, this is on him, I had quit once before Ahmed flew here and twice more while he was here and before that dinner. How is it my fault Ty did what he did ?â
âThe truth might have helped.â
âLou knew the truth Grandpa, just because you and Ty didnât is that what this is, did you want to hit Ahmed ? How about Dad ? Youâve never even asked me my side or how I am, I canât imagine how unimportant that is to you compared to Ty.â
âHeâs in jail Amy.â
âI know Grandpa, believe me I know and Iâll remember it every second he is, because no one here will ever let me forget it. I wonât be joining you for dinner by the way, you can continue this after Iâve changed.â
âWhere are you off to ?â
âTo deal with a problem.â
She left in what could only be described as a business suit with a simple âgoodbyeâ as she passed the dining room table.
She got home late intentionally and packed. She was up early, showered before the rush and then kept to her room. She finally came out rolling two suitcases and parked them at the edge of the kitchen in front of the mud room.
She was dressed in working slacks, a jacket and a crisp white blouse. She wore the same boots she had worn home from Europe weeks before. She actually looked almost exactly as she had looked that day, hair, make-up and all.
âI can be reached at this top number, call or text, if that doesnât work call the other but only in an emergency and theyâll know where I am and be able to reach me.â
âWhere are you going ? When will you be back ?â
âIâm going to Belgium, I have a two year contract with Ahmedâs team as a coach and trainer. Ty will be dropped off about an hour after my limo leaves, all charges dropped. Itâs important you text me that you have him at that top number.â
âAmy, what did you do ?â
âI did exactly what you most wanted Grandpa, Iâm giving you back your son.â
âYou canât put this on me.â
âIâm not putting this on you, this is on Ty, him alone and his damn temper, but it is the end result you wanted isnât it ?
âNot this way.â
âThis is the only way and itâs done.â She said pouring herself a cup of coffee.
âAnd what do we tell Ty ?â
âTell him whatever the hell you want Lou. I can almost guarantee someone will mention the contract before he gets here, my employer will make sure Ty knows heâs won.â
âHeâs won what ?â
âCertainly not the filth that statement implies Grandpa, trainer and coach and thereâs no guarantee that if he touches me I wonât kill him. Iâll deal with Ahmed.â
âI didnât imply anything !!â
âIâve seen the look of disappointment on your face before Grandpa, you and Ty can be disappointed together, itâs easier to point your finger in a crowd.â
âWhat do I tell dad ?â
Amy laughed âDad ? Tell him Iâll be back before 10 years have gone by. He gets the same goodbye I got, none at all.â
âAmy, donât leave bitter.â Lisa said softly.
âSorry Lisa, bitterâs all Iâve got right now. Can I at least get hugs ?â She asked looking around the table.
Georgie and Katie came in dressed for school and looked around.
âWhatâs going on, why are you dressed like that ?â She asked looking at Amy.
âIâm leaving back to Europe Georgie, come give me a hug ?â
âThatâs it, what about Ty, youâre, youâre just going back to him ?â
Amy just shook her head, âyou know, just forget the hugs.â
She turned her back then and reached back to wheel her bags through the mud room.
âTake care of Ty.â She said in tears walking through the door.
Amy sat down on the porch wishing the car would just come and sighed when she saw it seconds later and right on time. She walked down the stairs and heard the voices from the kitchen.
Georgie was speaking âthatâs it, youâre just going to let her go ?â
âShe signed a contract Georgie.â Lisa said.
âSo thatâs it ?â
âGeorgie enough !!â Jack growled âShe did it so Ahmed would drop the charges against Ty, heâs coming home.â
It was mercifully the last thing she heard before the driver closed his door and sat down.
âIâm Stan, Ms. Fleming, Calgary Airport, Air France First Class to Antwerp, I got you a cup of coffee, I was told black.â
âThanks Stan, howâs traffic ?â
âIt shouldnât be that bad, relax.â
She asked Bruce to drive through Hudson on the way to the ranch, it was a large limo with dark glass and people naturally looked up as it stopped at a light. They drove past Maggieâs and Amy noted both the familiar stores and those that had changed. Heartland on the other hand hadnât changed at all as they rode though the gate. She hadnât told anyone she was coming home, her contract employed her by yearly season which was technically less than two years. She didnât want the hoopla nor did she know what she was going to do though several things crossed her thoughts over the past few months as she drew closer to this moment.
Soon after she had arrived in Europe she came to an agreement with Ahmed. Animosity wouldnât work with the horses and if he wanted to win he needed to move on and stop acting like a love lorn child. She wasnât now, nor had she ever been interested in him as anything other than her employer, her team captain and a friend. She also informed him that any chance of that continued friendship was gone. It took Ahmed a month or two but it finally stuck. He didnât know that by then Amy knew that she and Ty were pretty much at an impasse especially since she would not allow him to visit her, she couldnât risk that.
Since Amy had virtually no expenses and really didnât avail herself of much in Europe other than occasional clothing splurges she was arriving home with a tidy sum of money. With salary, bonuses and other side work she was able to do in Europe during brief breaks, combined with the other money from the first tour and Zeus it amounted to several hundred thousand dollars, no where near rich but enough she hoped for a nice down payment on a property assuming theyâd grant her a loan on reputation.
She saw Lisaâs Porsche and a truck that must be Jackâs ânewâ one as the limo pulled up and the driver got out. She looked around and didnât see anyone in the paddocks but some horses. âHello boysâ she whispered as she spied Phoenix and Harley wandering and grazing along with several others. âSpartan will be home in a few days.â
Lisa walked out onto the porch wiping her hands on a towel and shielded her eyes ready to give directions to the lost driver but paused for a second as Amy stood up and looked at her.
âAmy ?â She cried out dropping the towel onto the rail and rushing down the stairs.

Top 7 Recent Obsessions and 3 Freshly Intolerable Topics
Since my wife died in February, Iâve transformed into an obsessive recluse. Iâve always been a weirdo but now Iâm a grieving weirdo. It takes eccentricity to a whole other level. Before, my obsessions were psychology and home improvement projects. Now, work is impossible and I break down trying to choose flowers at the local Home Depot. Removing every last dandelion from the yard is my glorious new passion.
Since I trust you, Iâm going to tell you about some of the other strange occupiers of my mind. Like squatters, these topics have moved into my brain to fill up the unused rooms. I vacillate between kicking them out and kinda liking the company. Until new obsessions come along, Iâll play reluctant host to this ragtag collection of ideas. Â
1. Life After Life
Itâs natural to wonder what happens to someone after they die. Iâve been doing some light reading (usually at around 3AM) on what psychic mediums think on the subject. Apparently, we continue life on the other side, often recreating the likeness of our earthly homes and possessions out of familiarity. In my wifeâs afterlife, I hope she made some improvements. Sheâs likely finally found the perfect couch (comfy yet stylish!) and is no longer taunted by the daily dog hair tumbleweeds.
I have a few questions. Does my wife get to meet celebrities? Sheâd be totally psyched to meet Dolores OâRiordan, the lead singer of The Cranberries, who died in January of 2018. Did she get to watch the last season of Homeland that aired after she died? Can she still water a lawn in contemplative meditation? Most likely, sheâs cavorting with her first girlfriend, Suzy. Iâm told Suzy was a little crazy in her earth life so I hope sheâs not a bad influence.
If I end up living a few more decades, Iâll probably grow and change substantially. Will Patty recognize me when I finally make the trip? Will she and I still be soulmates or will I have to share her? Like, did Suzy claim my wife as her soulmate? I donât wish anyone loneliness in the after life but dang, Iâve got dibs.
2. Cookie Butter Therapy
If youâve read my self care tips, you know Iâve found cookie butter solace. Listening to my bodyâs unique nutrient requirements, I heed the call for that smooth comfort. As a psychologist, it used to bug me when Iâd see memes like, âI donât need therapy, Iâve got wine!â Occasionally speaking aloud, Iâd reply, âHello future client!â
Now, Iâm not so sure that retail, alcohol or food therapy is all that bad. I mean, it IS bad in that it doesnât solve the problem and could turn into something worse. But if keeping your head above water saves your life, perhaps I should reconsider these stopgap measures. Personally, Iâm planning a future half marathon to combat the future cookie butter problem. And by planning, I mean itâs on my list to look up neighborhood jogging routes.
3. Signs from Beyond the Veil
After my Dad died in 2002, I looked for evidence that his energy was still around. Losing a spouse takes it to a completely new desperation. Again, according to psychic mediums, we can ask our departed loved ones for specific signs and they will try to send them to us. Oh the pressure! Being an overachiever, of course I wanted to come up with the perfect sign to request from my wife. One that hits just the right balance of inside joke and everlasting love.
To get the ball rolling, I picked the first thing that came to mind. I asked my wife to send me a maroon Nissan Rogue SUV. Weird, I know - but also the perfect symbol of our family. Iâm not that great at these requests just yet so I hope she knows Iâm asking to see one, not get one as a gift. Years ago, she borrowed my maroon Nissan for a road trip with two little boys who would become my step kids. Having not yet met, questions about the carâs owner became a convenient way to talk about Mamaâs new sweetheart. Â
I started seeing this car EVERYWHERE. Thereâs this one little problem, though. Have you ever heard of confirmation bias? Psychology Today says, âConfirmation bias occurs from the direct influence of desire on beliefs. â Basically, I started seeing the car because I wanted the sign from her. The overly enthusiastic part of my brain said, âYeah, but wouldnât she also FLOOD the world with whatever sign you requested????â Next time, Iâll ask for money.
4. Meditation
After all the grief festivities were done (i.e. initial horror and subsequent wake and funeral), one of my besties recommended the book, Proof of Heaven by Dr. Eben Alexander. The author is a smarty-pants neurosurgeon who had a near death experience. He woke up out of a coma, wrote everything down, and set about trying to disprove the platitudes he once touted to patients. Anyway, a fascinating book and GREAT for the active griever in your life.
Veering from his conventional colleagues, Dr. Alexanderâs career diverged towards the path less taken. Heâs now involved in projects with the founders of Sacred Acoustics, a brainwave entrainment audio recordings company. Thatâs a fancy way of saying guided meditations with binaural beats that create experiences. Thereâs one that facilitates âcommunication with spirits across the veil.â Since Iâm obsessed with getting back with my wife without leaving my kids and dogs, I became a convert.Â
Before Patty died (AKA BPD), I was known to dabble in mindfulness and may have claimed I meditated for longer and more often than I actually remembered to do. Donât judge me, I was a busy mom! With a renewed desperation and time on my hands, I gave these wacky meditations a go. OMG, yâall they are amazing. I dare say Iâve done a little cavorting with my wife (at least in my mind). Seriously, between ADHD and grief brain, I can still knock out a 38 minute âLove Bodyâ meditation, no sweat. In the least, itâs a crutch over the rough spots.
5. Crafty Crystal Suncatchers
I havenât gone off the deep end (yet) and meditated while balancing my chakras (okay, maybe once) with family heirlooms. If you read more than one book about the afterlife, youâll pick up on themes. Psychics love auras, butterflies, and RAINBOWS. Since Iâve got time, I figured it wasnât hard to put together my own suncatcher. You can certainly purchase these dandies but I prefer my own extremely amateur creations - especially since I need one for every window. Not sure what to do with these colorful messages from beyond but they are a comfort of sorts.
You may have gathered that I wasnât previously into the paranormal. For instance, I knew that smudging was a thing but now, thanks to Etsy, I have my own kit. Same with healing crystals. As a child from a family of geologists, semi-precious gems, variegated rocks and hefty quartz crystals already held a special awe. I must note that my grandfather never mentioned crystal suncatchers as a method for communicating with the dead. Itâs all me whoâs hoping for yet another channel where, through refracted sunlight, my wife asserts her presence.
6. Documentaries About Death
Itâs a widow habit to categorize life events as âbeforeâ and âafter,â We use these terms with a wistful air of melancholy apology. We didnât create these terms but theyâre used as handy shortcuts before launching into yet another story about our dead spouses. This next tidbit is about me, though.
I love documentaries but before, Iâd skip over the downers. Who wants to watch a flick about eroding habitats when your lawn looks so good? Times change and now after, Iâve completely confused Amazonâs algorithms with my new entertainment searches. I find comfort in tragedy.
I recently watched The Bridge, a documentary on the worldâs most dangerous suicide locale - the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. Since it was built, upwards of 1,700 souls have leapt to their nearly assured demise. The doc profiles the families of people actually caught on film at the moment of decision. Should sound awful, right? To me, itâs soothing. Not the suicides, but hearing the family process the death. Theyâre in the soup with me. Their stories make me feel normal.
7. Unique Grave Decorations
Iâm only sharing this with you because I know youâll understand. I threw this one in the mix because I had a brief, but intense love affair with unusual grave decorations.  Did you know you can get âgrave blanketsâ to keep your loved one warm? Obviously more popular in northern climes, they're actually giant wreaths of evergreen branches to cover the gravesite. Sadly, they arenât allowed in my wife's cemetery or Iâd be all over it. She was always coldâŠ..before.
Switching gears, turning towards the following topics is a sort of exposure therapy. They each flutter at the windows of my mind and blot out the light (which I need for rainbows). I might as well add them to the growing list of crap I have to deal with eventually. Just so you know, Iâm not weird enough to literally keep a list (yet).
1. Birthdays, Holidays, and Other Horrible Occasions
I know theyâre coming. I limped through some already. May holds the double whammy of Motherâs Day and my birthday. Despite the embarrassing lack of evergreen splendor, weâll visit her gravesite where Iâve already smuggled in other decorative contraband. Since I buy presents for myself all the time, for my birthday, I generally request a tasteful yet classic homemade card. Iâll get through the anticipatory dread and trudge through the sewage of my lowered expectations. Itâs only another 24 hours to get through.
2. Getting Married Again
I canât even think about whatâs next. Or rather who. When I do think about it, I feel sorry for the sad sap whoâs attracted to the runner up spot. Hereâs the thing, I think about getting married again ALL THE TIME. My fantasy only went as far as imagining waking up in a fully formed relationship. Because I loved being married to my wife, it seemed reasonable to want our life reinstated. As the days turn into months, finding someone new continues to stubbornly insert itself from outside my head. I blame Patty. She always insisted if she died first, sheâd want me to remarry. Less charitably, I countered that if I died first, she could never remarry because Iâm her one true love. She apparently wants the last word.
To be fair, I am only 45 years old. When my stepson asked, I told him I was going to marry the dogs. He just doesnât want me to change my last name, so on that weâre cool. Like passing me a note, Pattyâs best friend from high school also delicately floated the idea. Even my brother-in-law said he wouldnât want me to pass up something special. They all want me to be happy. I donât want to want to get married again. It feels like forcing myself into a loveless, arranged marriage. With my luck, Iâll live another forty years. Maybe Iâll feel differently if my wife sends me a convincing sign. Â
3. The Next Death
The completely self absorbed grieving person Iâve become canât even think about the next shitburger tragedy thatâs surely on its way.. Youâd think Iâd have a guess who it might be but youâre wrong. I never would have put my wife on the shortlist but here we are. With new obsessions hoarding space in my grieving mind, itâs too crowded to handle another disaster. So I just donât think about it.
If youâre grieving too, I want you to know youâre not a weirdo. Or at least youâre a weirdo like all of us - another broken toy tossed onto Bereavement Island (like Fantasy Island but more sad). I was never particularly interested in psychics, grave ornaments or dead people (beyond famous authors). Grief turns you inside out until you no longer recognize the person you were before. It wasnât so easy to tip me over and I certainly didnât cry in public. Falling into grief is similar to falling in love. With both, I lost my appetite, deeply felt things Iâd never felt before, and became completely obsessed. In the end, grief is just another stage of love. An unfortunate byproduct of the grandest home improvement project. Iâm comforted to realize that even as Iâm swept up by transient passions, Iâm essentially the same loving partner at my core.

I say this every week and every week I fail, still Iâm going to try to keep this post to a reasonable size. At least on my part. I have been rambling on way too much! That doesnât mean weâre going to skip over the important stuff, like for instance: Matt how are you?
Iâm fine (aside from some random back pain)! How are you doing Irina?
I have a huge cold, I guess Iâm doing Canadian?
Iâm not sure if this is a freaky coincidence or if Iâm a low-key psychic but this weekâs Psycho Pass was an illustration of what I was talking about in my post last Thursday. Essentially, the production values took a visible step down. To be fair, Psycho Pass is a stunning looking show and itâs unsurprising that it couldnât keep that level up for an entire season.
Iâm sure Iâm not the only one who noticed art consistency go way down and CG integration get a lot less smooth in this episode. Fortunately, with Psycho Pass being so detailed to begin with, even pared down versions of the art still look pretty good. Nevertheless it has definitely looked better:
Of course I pay way more attention to technical details than most people. In all likelihood most viewers didnât really notice! Did you?
I was very distracted by how off-model practically every character looked in any medium or long shotsâI think having to produce a 45 minute episode in such a time schedule is proving too much for the production staff. But you are correct, even at its most inconsistent itâs still a strikingly good-looking show.
As division 1 continues to slowly hunt down the Foxes, we finally get a bit of background regarding the mysterious organization. It seems that thereâs a whole group of Makishimaâs out there and they are organizing against the system. An underground criminal outfit full of people with magical every clear hues.
It strikes me that this may have been an inevitable outcome. In a Sybil controlled society, evolution was bound to quickly create a bunch of mutants capable of controlling or at least maintaining their hues. The brain is really fantastically adaptable. I mean just the advent of smartphones has already physically changed the neural net mapping in younger generations. With something like Sybil, that has a high impact on every aspect of a personâs life, the change is going to get accelerated for sure.
Itâs actually a brilliant bit of world building in my opinion but it could very well be entirely in my head. Whatâs your take on it Matt? Also I realize that my interest may be a bit niche, so donât hesitate to jump in and talk about whatever you like.
What was that about trying to keep this post to a reasonable size and not ramble too muchâŠ? If weâre talking about things I like, I really enjoyed the absurdity of Karina delivering a political speech about religion and then without missing a beat transitioning into her idol outfit and performing a song.
We already have story threads regarding white collar fiscal manipulation with nationwide impact, neuroscience in the unique universe of Psycho Pass, shadowy mastermind puppeteers, a criminal organisation of uniquely advantaged people, Kei and Arataâs very peculiar background and personal arcs, racial tension and high level political intrigue.
And now, we get a religious angle. Do you think that the narrative is going in too many directions and is risking to lose focus or do you figure the more the merrier and it should add a few?
This show wants to do and say a lot and while I think everything itâs wanting to do and say is important itâs very much at the point where if it tries to do much more itâs going to collapse under the weight of itself.
It seems the rise in terrorist activity happening in the city right now is linked to a church of some sort. Or at the very least, a lot of its members are involved. The latest bomber having joined in hopes it would help him get in a better place spiritually and clear his hue. Of course, the are also leaving calling cards all over the place so they must have something to do with it as well.
Although were a lot of things happening in Psycho Pass already, Iâm actually rather interested by the religious aspect. Thereâs something fascinating and terrifying about a âSibyl sanctioned religionâ. And religion does odd things to people and their psyche in the best of times, I canât wait to see what it can do under these circumstances.
After all, we are what we believe!
It seemed a bit weird to me that the show never really mentioned religion before and now suddenly itâs all anyoneâs talking about. I realise itâs because itâs currently integral to the plot but I think it would have been better world-building had someone mentioned âHeavenâs Leapâ in any of the previous episodesâeven in passingâespecially since itâs apparently a big deal.
We got to meet 3 very different spiritual leaders from 3 very different religions. I am not a religious person in real life. I grew up in a place and time where it was more or less outlawed and it has just never really been a big part of my life. But Iâm not someone who dislikes religion either. In fact I find it very interesting. I just donât have much experience with it.
This is why, to me, despite the outward differences, all 3 of these guys sort of seemed the same.
That sounds like a bit of social commentary on religion in general, Irina! If weâre looking for a parallels with real world religion I suppose âHeavenâs Leapâ is supposed to be some sort of Jehovahâs Witness / Scientology hybrid and the CRP is some vague version of Catholicism. And then thereâs just straight up Buddhism.
*It wasnât..I literally meant they seemed to be built around the same character archetype not that their religions are the same. Donât know if all religious figures in real life are that similar.
Because of all the different themes season 3 of Psycho Pass has been exploring, I wasnât sure what the main focus would be. 5 hours in, I think itâs going to explore the effects of culture clash in an authoritarian society with thought crime. Thatâs a pretty ambitious goal. Even if it doesnât manage to quite pull it off, Iâll be impressed by the effort! I know you think that speculating on where a story is going is not good but I would love to have your thoughts on it, Matt.
Itâs not that I think itâs not good, my writer brain canât help but speculate, itâs just Iâm happy for a story to play out however the writer of the piece wants it to play outâIâm a bit of a bad critic in that respect. Whether this show is wanting to have a grand specific theme like you mention or just paint a broader canvas of the complexities of living in such a regimented world Iâm not sure but itâs still interesting nonetheless.
This is probably nothingâŠBut Arataâs house really looked like the division 1 mandated psychiatristâs house in the first season. Iâm almost 100% certain itâs not the same because itâs in the middle of the city, while the other one was in the countryside, but the architecture is similar. I wonder if itâs significant in any way.
Probably not.
I thought the design looked familiar, I donât know if this is the kind of show thatâd just forget its own world-building like that and this not be important but then again who knows!
So Matt, what were your thoughts on episode 5?
Honestly probably my least favourite episode so far. Sure the allure of something new with the religion aspect is interesting but the overall episode itself felt like a bit of a downgrade and not just with the off-model character art. Some scenes felt too fast paced while others felt drawn-out and Arata not being able to use his âmental traceâ felt like artificially handicapping the story for the sake of not using its own âcheatsâ to find the culprit. Itâs by no means bad, nor even mediocre, itâs pretty great and had a lot of excellent character moments and interesting expansions to the overall world. Iâm just worried the writer of this series may have bitten more off than he can chew. What about you Irina, Iâm guessing you enjoyed it more than last week?
I liked it way more especially in the second half. And Iâm ok with Arata not using his trace since it was set up properly how dangerous it is for him and how weak he is right now, fresh out of the hospital and all. Not to mention that using extreme empathy on someone who could very well be mind controlled sounds like a quick way to get himself mind controlled. These guys are detectives, they should know better.
I enjoyed it. I like when the story slips into speculative fiction and I found the pacing much better than in the last arc so to me it was a plus rather than a drawback. I have a feeling we are enjoying very different aspects of the season.
Psycho Pass s3 ep5 â Leap of Faith I say this every week and every week I fail, still Iâm going to try to keep this post to a reasonable size.

Haunting of Hill House Theory
The Olivia hallucination that lives with Hugh is a true sprinkle of her, not a grief hallucination.
In the Red Room, Nellie says that when the people we love die, they continue to live on, sprinkled on our lives like confetti. I think she meant this literally and that this version of Olivia is one such piece of confetti. When we see Oliviaâs ghost appear to different members of the family she takes on different demeanors and different personalities at different times, like fractures and shards of who she was, but never complete.
For example, when she appears in the funeral home to Steve, this version of her also places buttons on Nellâs eyes in the casket as a mark of love for her youngest child, trying to give her peace. And then there is the truely primal version of Olivia that appears under Shirleyâs desk to Hugh and Theo, after smashing the forever house diorama which probably signifies her smashing the previous dreams she had for her family and instead she is now trying to get them back to Hill House.
Different figments of Olivia compell different behaviors from her family like the version of her through the window at the OBGYN clinic to Steve that forces him to tell Leigh the truth, or the bowler hat version that appears to Luke that tells him to âcome home, my love.â
I truly believe the best parts Olivia are with Hugh and sometimes her kids even if they canât see her - case in point being Nell seeing her mom at her wedding which is the only time we see any of the kids see this version of Olivia. And this apparition that appears to Hugh is the piece of her that is most like how she was before the House, itâs manipulations, and Poppyâs influence. Of course, these happenings did change Olivia and she still exists that way in some parts of herself, like the part of her that still resides in the house or the truly horrific parts of her (like at the graveyard) that we see throughout the season.
Back in the house, when Hugh is talking to Olivia in 1x10, and he tells her about carrying her with him and she says âthat wasnât me, that was just you,â I think she is wrong.
THAT Olivia wouldnât even recognize the resembling past version of herself if she were standing right in front of her. The House has dissected that part of her psyche from the Olivia that still walks the house and it resides in the only place it can - with her husband and her children (even if her kids canât see her), or the only place that truly feels like home. This âhallucinationâ of her always knows what her kids need and coaches Hugh through interacting with them as adults. Hugh has no clue how to talk to and mend bridges with his adult children, for example he tries to congratulate Luke on his sobriety at Nellieâs funeral. Olivia tells Hugh that Luke doesnât want to âmake today about him,â and that itâs okay to just sit and be with him. Hugh would have kept talking and furthering that divide between him and his youngest son. Theo and Luke are the first ones to open up a little bit to their father, with the assistance of Olivia. Even with Shirley and Hugh is continuing to tell her to forgive her sister, and we see her reject her fatherâs concern AFTER Olivia told him not to push her. The ways in which he fails with his children is when he follows his own instinct rather than Oliviaâs. He was apart from his kids for so long that he never learned how to navigate a relationship with any of them but Olivia still knows her kids in their simplicities while Hugh tends to over complicate and overcompensate.
This version of her knows her kids and her husband and tries as best she can to help them navigate their healing, meanwhile the other versions of her in the house are still trying kill her children to keep them âsafe.â She is so lost and fractured into various pieces, but they are all still Olivia - the good and the bad.
To add to this theory, we see this âfracturingâ of sorts with William Hill, having his ghost as the âtall manâ with his bowler hat wandering the halls tapping his cane on the floor but he is also in the basement, scratching the bricks behind the wall.
The only ghost we donât really see this with is Nellie (other than her normal self and the Bent Neck Lady but she was still navigating her death) which I suspect is largely due to her being the achetype of âAcceptanceâ in the 5 stages of grief. Had it been one of the other Crain siblings to die in the house, we definitely would have see this broken glass effect be more apparent. Nell may have been clinically depressed and had a horrible, traumatic life but when it mattered most she knew why and she knew who mattered to her most. Even her revelations after death gave her more clarity instead of breaking her further.
If the writers were to ever continue the Crain familyâs story, I would love to see Steve, Shirley, Theo, and Luke be able to bring their mother back together and give her a little bit of peace.

Chernobyl!!
23 May
Those of us who signed up for the full day trip to inside Chernobylâs exclusion zone were up early in our long pants, sleeves, with enclosed shoes with our passports ready for the security checks to go into the zone. We signed our lives away on a safety waiver, and check in sheets that go to the highly controlled checkpoints located at the different zone crossings. Visits to the area are highly controlled with only a few tour companies given permission to enter, they are required to wear a tracker at all times so they are monitored to ensure they are not going into areas where they are not permitted. We were all required to wear dosimeters so that our radiation exposure could be checked at the end of the day. Our guide, Alexi, gave us some amazing insights he has learned from years of research, insights into not only the events that lead up to what occurred in the early hours of 26th April 1986, but also the time line of sorts of what was done afterwards. A lot of the âtruthsâ surrounding the reactor explosion were lost when witnesses died, or were buried by the propaganda and coverups of the Soviets at the time. Donât forget it took for America to call them out with the incontrovertible satellite photos of the blast for the Soviets to admit anything had happened, let alone take steps to contain the ongoing radiation leakage and further risks of explosions. When it comes to information surrounding Chernobyl itâs difficult to find a complete story, let alone be able to fact check anything. Alexi gave us the name of a you tube documentary that he advised shows the true side of what happened in reactor 4 on 26 April 1986. The " Battle of Chernobyl" if you want to look it up!
First up was a stop in Zalesye, an abandoned village within the exclusion zone. It was surreal, to step off the bus, knowing that we were walking down a main street, but seeing nothing but vegetation. Then through avenues in the trees we came across the remains of the houses, we then entered into the old town hall building with its rotting floors, and decaying walls. There were still old signs on the walls. I managed to get myself what I like to call a âshin - obylâ bruise on my way in, as only I can - stacked it climbing up onto the entry. Luckily one of my bus mates helped me up as we were told not to touch walls, or ground...or anything really ... so that would be why we had to wear long pants (for when idiots like me fall over!)
The next stop was the reason the power stations were built, the Duga radar. Holy huge metal antenna array... when you know that the huge, costly, power hungry radar actually wasnât that good at its job makes the events of the reactor explosion seem even more of an avoidable incident. Incredibly, you would have no idea that it was there until you walk into the forest of vegetation, then itâs an âoh myâ moment at itâs sheer size and the wonder of the precision of the components. It is slowly rusting, and someone died climbing it a few years ago, so we were not allowed to climb it.
We then headed to Chernobyl and the Reactor canteen for lunch. Yes, complete canteen lunch on a tray... Soup, mains, desert, replete with unsmiling Ukrainian canteen ladies serving it to us. With the extra bread weâd grabbed at lunch we then fed fish from the railway bridge near the reactors. Then it was up close to reactor 4 and the monument for it. I couldnât believe we were able to get to within about 200m of it. Although there are strict rules on photos in this area - can only shoot in one direction, and there are guards and cameras everywhere.
Chernobyl town was the administrative centre for the district and until its evacuation on the 30th April 1986, housed about 14000 people It was not as close to the site as our next stop.
Alexi gave us an interesting parallel: apparently âChernobylâ means wormwood in Russian. In Chernobyl town, 164 died as part of the first responders to the explosion, and there is a memorial that has been erected in the central square depicting an Angel blowing a trumpet. The 8th book of revelations talks of a cataclysmic event : âAnd the third angel sounded, and there fell a great star from heaven, burning as it were a lamp, and it fell upon the third part of the rivers, and upon the fountains of waters; And the name of the star is called Wormwood: and the third part of the waters became wormwood; and many men died of the waters, because they were made bitter.â Revelation 8:10-11. Draw from that whatever conclusions you will, interesting nonetheless...
Pripyat was designed to be new age city of sorts, with its amusement park, cafes, art installations, hotels, apartments it was coming into itself with 50000 residents, housing workers at the power plant. It was finally evacuated in the afternoon of the 27th April 1986, with residents being told they would be gone for a couple of days and to just grab a few things and leave their pets. They were never allowed to return. We climbed through the maternity hospital, where the abortions were performed, with some of its records and equipment still intact. We were warned not to touch anything that still remained as it would still be highly radioactive. Trekking through the vegetation we came across what once was a beautiful cafe on the banks of the river that was due to open on the day the city was evacuated. The stained glass art that had adorned its window depicting the four seasons, some still intact, the rest of it lying shattered on the ground. From there we headed to the sports stadium, through what we later realised was the soccer field (no sign that it was there!) To me it was incredible to see sparks of beauty still there, the glass work in the cafe, the tile art adorning the external sides of two of the buildings we saw. We ventured into the pool area of the sports complex, itâs dive platform still intact, tiles, ladders, everything still there, just decaying, old, or vandalised by some who have snuck into the area over the years. It was then time for the iconic amusement park. Again something that was only just opening when the incident occurred. It stands as a rusting memory of time gone by, bumper cars, Ferris wheel, all the fun of the fair, with that eerie overtone of nothingness or is it hopelessness, Iâm not sure.
We then took off to see the last Lenin statue in Ukraine, all others have been removed. It is still located outside of the Communist party building where the âfakeâ trial took place of a power plant director and 2 engineers, where they were found guilty of negligence and the the blame placed on them for the incident. Nothing of course said about the safety measures that were supposed to have been installed in the reactor, or the fact that they failed, or they fact that the staff were following orders as required under Soviet rule. The Chernobyl town is home to what are known as the âself settlersâ. Previous residents who have returned of their own volition to continue living in their property.
Our last stop was in the Red forest area, northern part of the exclusion zone. It apparently received the worst of the radiation. We entered the kindergarten where to my dismay we learned that kids continued to be sent to for at least a week after the reactor explosion. Testing after the incident proved that everything including the toys they had played with were riddled with extremely high levels of radioactivity. It was poignant and incredibly sad to see the remains of the toys, the cribs/beds knowing that these children had been exposed to such toxic levels of radiation due to the inaction of the Soviet authorities.
On our way out of the zone we stopped briefly at âThe men who saved the worldâ. An un-offical memorial to the first attendees, doctors, firefighters etc, who all died in hospital number six in Russia and were then buried in lead coffins somewhere in Russia. Their families were not allowed to even see them or be at the burial.
On our way out of two checkpoints we had to submit to a full body radiation scan at each in order to check for any contamination. Luckily none of us had to be decontaminated (ie hosed down!). We were then given strict instruction to shower thoroughly and ensure our clothes were either washed or kept in an area safely before we washed them... On a side note the radiation we experienced for the day was somewhere around a 5 or 6 hour transatlantic flight so I pretty much got more radiation flying over to Europe than I did wandering around all day - good to know though!
It was an amazing day. A long one, we're all tired. But wow. How lucky am I that I got to do this. Mother nature has given the human race and it's nuclear power a big fuck you. And I love it! It's surreal to walk down what was once a street realising that on both sides of you hidden by nature's growth stands the time capsule of the crumbling remnants of the buildings of whole towns. Nature has rebounded here in spades, the birds chirping constantly, the land brimming with growth, the fish teeming - and no, none of them have 2 heads or mutations anymore. Apparently nature very quickly removes such mutations when they serve no purpose. The amusement park, a ghost town of rusting steel and decaying wood. The beautiful art works of tile and glass slowly deteriorating. It's eerie, and incredibly fascinating. My emotions are everywhere. Our guide is so passionate about what happened here and what the Soviets did to cover up their mistakes and the impact this had on the people who are still affected to this day, with no accurate records of how many have died from exposure in the years since the explosion. I was astounded how close we were able to get to reactor four. Incredibly saddened at how little care was taken of the people here. This Chernobyl adventure will stay with me forever, and has left an indelible mark on my psyche. If you donât know much about this story, read more, find as much of the truth as you can, and most important of all - never forget.
