Three days after my 6th birthday, my school went into a lockdown. It went into lockdown because there was a shooter at the university less than two miles away from my school. A year and a half before, there had been a mass shooting at the same university, where 32 people were killed.

I don't remember any of these things happening. I was too young.

A couple of years ago, my mom told me the story about when I came home from school and told her about the lockdown drill we did. My mom and my sister, who was eight at the time, made eye contact. My mom and my sister both knew that it wasn't a drill. And even at eight, she knew not to tell me.

In the aftermath of the Georgia school shooting, I am left thinking about this. I am thinking about the fact that my mother always hugged me before school, every single day, because she was terrified she wouldn't see me come home. And now, I'm thinking about the families who didn't have their kids come home.

I have watched multiple different videos of students of that high school talking about what happened. I saw a girl talking about how the shooter pointed the gun at her and ran towards her. I saw a boy talking about one of the teachers who had been killed, about how the last thing they talked about was his tardies. And I saw a girl talking about how the killer had been sitting next to her in class before all of this happened.

These are all children. They should not have to deal with this.

The father of the 14 year old who killed 4 at a Georgia high school has been arrested and charged.

Colin Gray, 54, faces the following charges:

- 4 counts of Involuntary Manslaughter

- 2 counts of Second Degree Murder

- 8 counts of Cruelty to Children

The subsequent divorce between Colin and Marcee Gray separated the family of five. Colt went to live with his father, while the two younger siblings initially lived with their mother.

Mason Schermerhorn was only a few years younger than me, had the same hobbies as me, was autistic like me, was a STUDENT like me, HAD A FAMILY like me; only he will never get to see them again, never get to play the trumpet with his sister again, never get to play video games with his friends again.

Cristina Irimie was a woman like me, a teacher like I want to be, a LIVING BREATHING PERSON like me; only now, instead of continuing to teach her students and go home to her family, she is forever frozen in that day.

Christian Angulo hugged his parents good night that night like I hugged mine, he went to class the next morning like me, only he never walked out, unlike me, because I had the privilege of being hundreds of miles away where there hasn’t been a school shooting yet.

Richard Aspinwall’s students dragged his body back into the classroom and used the clothes off their backs as tourniquets for the gunshot wounds.

Having to go read this through, and change every “is” to “was” broke something in me. I feel great sadness and anger every time there is a school shooting, but for some reason, seeing that one of these kids was so similar to me made me start crying uncontrollably.

No more of this “thoughts and prayers” useless bullshit. No more of this “never forget, never again” BECAUSE IT’S ALL BULLSHIT.

YOU CANNOT WILL AWAY GUN VIOLENCE, IT’S NOT SOMETHING THAT CAN GO AWAY WITH A QUICK PRAYER AND FLICK OF HOLY WATER.

It is not “liberal” to say we need stricter guns laws. It is HUMAN. It is every child’s right, every teacher’s right, EVERY PERSON’S RIGHT to not be mowed down by a military grade assault weapon to the point where there’s nothing left.

We have seen how preventative gun control works flawlessly in other countries, but Americans care more about their guns then they do their children.

Families should not fear sending their children to a place of learning, students should not have pre-written goodbye texts saved in their phone. This shouldn’t be happening, TO ANYONE. But it is, because of the negligence of our government and it’s sheer disregard for our lives.

Americans reap what they sow when it comes to school shootings. What did you expect considering what kind of sociopathic world order America has created?

You put those weapons into circulation. You fund violence abroad. You vote for genocides and dirty wars and regime change and nuclear arms races. You created an antisocial culture where there is no one but the "individual". And now middle America is shocked that the violence has come home to roost? You shouldn't be. These are our demons catching up with us, the logical conclusion to the sad experiment of American empire.

If we had any balls we would take responsibility and do something about it so our children won't be killed. But we can't even do that. So our children are going to continue to die.

i get it kids need to pay attention in class and phones can be distracting but phones also are safety

the US isn't a country rn that can take students communication with their parents away and be 100% certain theyll be safe
