This Fossil Friday, we bring you the beloved Apatosaurus: a long-necked dinosaur that could reach an impressive size of 73 ft (22 m) long! The Museum’s first Apatosaurus was discovered at Wyoming’s Bone Cabin Quarry in 1898. When it went on display in 1905, it was the first sauropod dinosaur ever mounted. It’s hard to believe, but this gigantic herbivore maintained its mind-boggling bulk on a diet of plants. A soup of microbes in its belly broke down otherwise hard-to-digest plants by fermentation. In fact, some birds, the closest living relatives of dinosaurs, also have fermentation chambers in their guts.

The Museum is open daily from 10 am–5:30 pm. Plan your visit!

Earlier today while a friend and I were playing as apatosaurus, a baby thal was showing off a manta it had to us when a raptor yoinked it and ran off. The baby thal stared to cry out and throw a tantrum until its mama flew in and hugged it, it was the cutest interaction I’ve seen in a long time in PoT😭

Heads up… it’s Fossil Friday! 🦕 The Museum's Apatosaurus, collected at the turn of the 20th century, was the first sauropod ever mounted. But did you know that for years, this mighty dinosaur was displayed with the wrong skull? Using incomplete remains, scientists speculated that Apatosaurus was closely related to another sauropod: Camarasaurus. As a result, a similar skull to Camarasaurus was sculpted and placed atop Apatosaurus’ body (pictured), where it remained for decades. As new research emerged, this reconstruction was updated. To this day, only one Apatosaurus has ever been found with its skull attached!

Dinovember 2024 Day 8: Marsh’s Longnecks

An Apatosaurus and a Barosaurus join a two Brontosaurus and a Diplodocus in drinking at a water hole in what is now the famous Morrison Formation. All four genera were described by O.C. Marsh, the chief rival of E.D. Cope during the Bone Wars of the 1870s-1890s.
