Uggh, I got so so behind on Rewatches this week, but diving back in! I was tagged by @consoledacup @unlessimwrongwhichyouknowimnot @aosfangirl81 at various points this week, so here we go!

Shadows

OH MY HEART. They did such a good job with burying the lead of what was going on with Fitzsimmons. The team being all cage-y about how things were going in the lab-- you started to wonder if Fitz died (the horror) and then you see them in the lab together and you’re like phew. BUT then Fitz is clearly struggling (but yay! Jemma is being super supportive) and a new can of feels is opened. AND THEN YOU REALIZE FITZ IS IMAGINING JEMMA. Such a roller coaster ride. 

Unrelated to Fitzsimmons:

Heavy is the Head

The imaginary Jemma being a total instigator. I know she’s just apart of Fitz’s subconscious, but still.

“I didn’t solve this today.” Poor Fitz not beiing able to communicate properly what he means and getting frustrated.

Mack calling Fitz Turbo :) Imaginary!Jemma is right-- Mack doesn’t treat him like the others (with big sad pity filled eyes), but I also was annoyed with how sharp his was with him sometimes. I remember really not being a fan of him in early S2 (because of stuff like this), but the big teddy bear has grown on me.  

Skye being angry at Jemma for abandoning not just Fitz, but her and the whole team. Family (and the team is her family) is so important to Skye-- at this point she can’t imagine why Jemma would leave. Fresh on the heels of Ward’s betrayal, it probably cut even deeper.

Rewatching Heavy is the Head

Heavy is the head that wears the crown controls the hand holding the little cube of secrets.

Coulson is currently keeping quite a bit of them - his carving obsession, Theta Protocol, the monitoring of Skye, Jemma’s mission, Bobbi’s mission - and it’s wearing him down.

He’s done away with levels but the old hierarchical system is still in place: he’s Director, May is his second who knows most but not all and the field agents are still kept in the dark about the bigger picture, even when it involves them directly. Is there a better way to do this? It’s a question the season will ask.

Meanwhile the premiere’s macguffin is quite the hot property, with S.H.I.E.L.D., Hydra and Raina all competing for its possession. Raina is brilliant, involving S.H.I.E.L.D. because she can’t go against Hydra on her own and likely expecting they’ll distract each other long enough for her to make a move. Even without Hunter’s “bold action”, the outcome may still have been the same.

Shiny & Deadly:

What a nifty yet malevolent piece of technology the Obelisk is. It kills anyone who has no business handling it, which makes it its own effective security, at least against those who don’t know how it works. It instantly recognizes who should handled it, even rewarding them with a fuzzy feeling (hey, it didn’t kill me! I’m special!). And from the looks of it, it has the instruction manual written all over itself, which you must admit is very efficient. Or maybe that’s just Kree for “Warning: May Cause Petrification. Handle with Care”😁.

Daddy Dearest:

Cal’s second impression is possibly even worse than the first: his hands are still dripping with blood (ewww), he pushes Raina to test her “inhumaness” with zero care for her well being and then forces her toward an equally dangerous course of action by exploiting her yearning to learn about herself. Now, Raina being the manipulated and the exploited for once is just karma at work but it still reflects quite poorly on him. So far, so monster.

Stuff that crossed my mind:

May, that doesn’t sound covert. A black leather-clad figure, riding a black motorcycle, zigzagging through traffic at high speed, gun in hand? It’ll be fine, people will just think they’re shooting a movie because how is that real life?😁

Skye’s first, second and third thought are all about Hartley and Idaho. It speaks well of May’s training that she doesn’t explode when Coulson shuts down her questioning.

Good work? How about “holy crap, Skye, we gotta get on that?”. And here’s where she loses her newfound agent’s composure. Seriously, Phil, are you actually trying to raise her suspicions? The less you tell her, the worse it will be.

I know. And we just re-tiled the bathrooms. What about the carpet flooring in the bedrooms? It’s a 70 years old bunker, those will be nasty.

She abandoned all of us. A) Telling Fitz and Skye that Jemma left for a mission, without specifics, might have been a better idea than let them think this (because Fitz feels the same and worse) B) Skye’s abandonment issues have abandonment issues and it would be nice if the people who care about her would remember that every now and then, *before* neglecting to explain why her best friend left or, say, exile her off base without even telling her where she’s going. Hypothetically speaking.*cough*

I met a girl. Correction: you met a goddess😎.

A senator with very deep pockets. And only slightly less of a scumbag - because he hasn’t killed anyone as far as we know - than his brother down in your basement.

I’m a field agent and I can handle myself. Yes. She can run headfirst into danger twice as fast now😁.

Try Yoga or something [...] I’m really not flexible. Okay, Mass Effect fans? He’s Garrus and May is Shepard. Right?😎

They avoid me like the plague. People overdoing the nice, crossing into condescension, or steering clear to avoid the awkward? I can’t imagine which is worse, tbh. *hugs Fitz*

You should have aborted the mission -- Hartley should have followerd my orders. Well, she’d be dead either way, if that’s any consolation. But, without Creel, Hunter’s quick extraction and field surgery would have saved her. So I’m giving this to Hunter on a personal level. On a big picture level, Coulson is unfortunately correct.

You know, I think I like him. Imaginary Simmons has the same appreciation for well formed and symmetrical men as real Simmons😉

How did you guys meet? -- Through my psychotic ex-wife. I’m beginning to think Bobbi won’t quite live up to everyone’s expectations🤣.

Secret to that, don’t get attached. -- Tried that. Didn’t work. Really? When? I mean, she was giving Coulson affectionate nicknames by episode 4, she looked devastated when Simmons was dying in episode 6 and broke every possible restriction and protocol to help Fitz and Ward in episode 7. I suppose this no-attachment resolution lasted the first three episodes then? 

What is he, lonely? -- I doubt it, the guy is jacked and he can turn *any* body part into *any* material. Poor Coulson, he *really* didn’t want that image in his head and painted by his surrogate daughter, no less.

Hydra only has one thing on their mind, world domination. Which is so 1945. Ah, I knew there was a reason I liked you, besides the flowers.

And beat it, you pissed him off. [...] I’m with you, Turbo. Mack being awesome.

I didn’t solve this today. Indeed, he solved it way back in 1x07 as the weapon that Coulson uses to take down Creel is a modified version of the Overkill device. And look at that,  characters remembering relevant past technologies and breakthroughs. *narrows eyes at S6*

Take a deep breath and clear your mind. Compliance will be rewarded. So, Creel is brainwashed. Which here really helps him, apparently, as the trigger phrase calms him enough to let his body break down and absorb the alien metal.

Good people, people I respect, vouched for you. “People”, uh? In retrospect, Hunter is a bit slow. How many “people” does he know in S.H.I.E.L.D. that he can’t figure out it was his ex-wife that recommended him?

It’s tough to lose a good partner. Hey, I bet there’s a story there!

I think something is wrong with him. Dad isn’t sharing and mom is covering for him. Time to hack their phones and bug the office, me thinks. What?

#AOSRewatch: Catching up!

I’ve been tagged over the past two weeks by @consoledacup, @accio-the-force (how dare you make me rewatch 1x22!! all the feels!!), and @whatlighttasteslike for various end of S1, beginning of S2 eps. I’m so so behind because I was traveling for work and then got THE WORST flu bug ever, so catching up now with three in a row:

2x01: Shadows

Something I am appreciating all over again in S1 and S2 are the twists and turns that we never saw coming. This one being that Simmons is a figment of Fitz’s imagination. Not only was it a really well choreographed twist (someone else mentioned how obvious it seems in hindsight, but how masterfully it’s done so you can’t even tell first time around), but also the way it’s revealed is amazing. I may just be feeling extra nostalgic, but I don’t feel these types of twists as much in S3 and S4 (remind me once the rewatch gets to S3 & S4 that I said this...)

Also also LANCE AMADEUS RAVENCLAW HUNTER! Ladies and gentlemen, the one and only. Thank you, Season 2. Thank you so much.

Also also, it breaks my heart how poignant it is that imaginary Simmons is wearing the same outfit she wore during FZZT, where Fitz arguably starts to discover his feelings for her run deeper. Does he want to remember her this way because after then things became messy? Does he want to remember the point in which he realized his feelings had grown? 

Lastly, fucking Iain De Caestecker. His facial expressions, the way his discomfort and impatience manifests in physical ways... TEARS TEARS TEARS

2x02: Heavy Is the Head

Poor poor Simmons. everyone thinks she abandoned all of them. I’m glad they find out sooner than later, but still...

God bless Alphonso Mackenzie and his never-endingly patient, beautiful relationship with Fitz.

2x03: Making Friends and Influencing People

*sigh* Oh Kara. I’m so sorry this is happening to you.

OH HI SIMMONS!!! I love this opening so, so much. Again, S2 with the fun twists and turns- where is Simmons? What is she doing? She seems so happy! What’s up with her? WHAAAAA? HYDRA??? Oh no, Coulson found her! WHAAAA? DOUBLE AGENT??? God, the S2 twists are so freaking good.

Coulson being the Dad-est Dad that ever did Dad with Simmons.

Simmons: “So...how is everyone?” Oh, honey. Your heart is showing.

I will note, however, that Simmons’ supervisor calls her Miss Simmons and I’m a little surprised she didn’t correct him.

OMG that shot of Simmons in the elevator with the security guards... one of the most gorgeous, silently badass shots of the season.

THE FITZ AND WARD SCENE!!!!! God, such incredibly wonderful beautiful acting there on both sides. SO good.

Yay everyone finally finds out that Simmons is a good guy still!

UGH, that ending with Coulson and Fitz. SO good. SO beautiful. Our poor babies.
