Genmei (661-721) was Japan's fourth empress regnant. She was Empress Jitō's half-sister and her match in terms of ambition and political skills. Her rule was characterized by a development of culture and innovations.
Ruling after her son
Like Jitō (645-703), Genmei was the daughter of Emperor Tenji but was born from a different mother. Jitō was both her half-sister and mother-in-law since Genmei had married the empress’ son, Prince Kusakabe (662-689). She had a son with him, Emperor Monmu (683-707).
Kusakabe died early and never reigned, which led to Jitō's enthronement. The empress was then succeeded by her grandson Monmu. The latter’s reign was short. In his last will, he called for his mother to succeed him in accordance with the “immutable law” of her father Tenji. Genmei accepted.
Steadfast and ambitious
Genmei was made from the same mold as her half-sister. She proved to be a fearless sovereign, undeterred by military crises.
She pursued Jitō's policies, strengthening the central administration and keeping the power in imperial hands. Among her decisions were the proscription of runaway peasants and the restriction of private ownership of mountain and field properties by the nobility and Buddhist temples.
Another of her achievements was transferring the capital at Heijō-kyō (Nara) in 710, turning it into an unprecedented cultural and political center. Her rule saw many innovations. Among them were the first attempt to replace the barter system with the Wadō copper coins, new techniques for making brocade twills and dyeing and the settlement of experimental dairy farmers.
A protector of culture
Genmei sponsored many cultural projects. The first was the Kojiki, written in 712 it told Japan’s history from mythological origins to the current rulers. In its preface, the editor Ō no Yasumaro praised the empress:
“Her Imperial Majesty…illumines the univers…Ruling in the Purple Pavillion, her virtue extends to the limit of the horses’ hoof-prints…It must be saif that her fame is greater than that of Emperor Yü and her virtue surpasses that of Emperor Tang (legendary emperors of China)”.
In 713, she ordered the local governments to collect local legends and oral traditions as well as information about the soil, weather, products and geological and zoological features. Those local gazetteers (Fudoki) were an invaluable source of Japan’s ancient tradition.
Several of Genmei’s poems are included in the Man'yōshū anthology, including a reply by one of the court ladies.
Listen to the sounds of the warriors' elbow-guards;
Our captain must be ranging the shields to drill the troops.
– Genmei Tennō
Reply:
Be not concerned, O my Sovereign;
Am I not here,
I, whom the ancestral gods endowed with life,
Next of kin to yourself
– Minabe-hime
From mother to daughter
Genmei abdicated in 715 and passed the throne to her daughter, empress Genshō (680-748) instead of her sickly grandson prince Obito. This was an unprecedented situation, making the Nara period the pinnacle of female monarchy in Japan.
Genmei would oversee state affairs until she died in 721. Before her death, she shaved her head and became a nun, becoming the first Japanese monarch to take Buddhist vows and establishing a long tradition.
Feel free to check out my Ko-Fi if you like what I do! Your support would be greatly appreciated.

Now that i've made some headway into the new games I can revisit this* little series of posts:
*[Kanto] [Johto] [Hoenn] [Sinnoh] [Unova] [Kalos] [Alola] [Galar] [Hisui] [Champs] [Paldea] [Paldea2] [Paldea3] [Teams] [Misc.]
Katy's name in Japanese is Kaede[カエデ] from kaede[楓] the japanese word for the maple tree. While the link is likely the Japanese use of maple syrup as a natural sugar in a lot of traditional pastries, it's kind of an odd choice of design when the Japanese maple is so well known for its deep red leaves, and even other maple trees are distinctly associated with various shades of red, orange, and yellow... Yet she's all brown with just a dash of minty green in there?
I covered Brassius' name in the lead up to game release but his Japanese name is Korusa[コルサ] as in Colza, another name for rapeseed or canola. He shares a namesake plant with Natane and Nabana, in Sinnoh/Hisui, but appears otherwise unrelated. Weird that his design is plant themed yet totally unrelated.
Iono's name was one I wasnt sure of at first, in Japanese it's Nanjamo[ナンジャモ] which is a pun on Nanjamonja[何じゃもんじゃ], which is and exclamation that gets translated very loosely as something like "what the hell is that!?" What i didnt realize at first and that apparently Nanjamonja-no-ki[なんじゃもんじゃの木] is actually the common name of the Chionanthus retusus, the Chinese fringetree. Incidentally I also thought for a moment that her name was a reference to nanjamonja-goke[ナンジャモンジャゴケ], the Takakia lepidozioides moss. But Iono's English name seems to come from the "...iona..." in Chionanthus...
Kofu's name is Haidai[ハイダイ] from the chinese name hǎidài[海带] for a type of Kelp/seaweed(Saccharina japonica). The English name might be a halfbaked attempt at appropriating makonbu[真昆布], the japanese name for the same plant; noting that the ko...bu[こ...ぶ] and kofu[こふ] are written similarly. Anyway... Given the chef gimmick, the seaweed you have to barter for for him, and the fact that one of his town's unique features is a chinese restaurant, it would appear to refer to it specifically as food. It's also the logo on his apron.
Tumblr media
Larry's name is Aoki[アオキ] from aoki[青木] the spotted laurel/Japanese laurel tree.(Aucuba japonica) Funny enough it reminds me of Norman's name being Senri from the Senryo plant, which is a similar looking plant with red berries, and they're both normal type specialists. His highlights are similar in shape and color to aoki leaves. And they seem to have gotten Larry from Laurel.
Ryme... Her name is Raimu[ライム] as in Lime, homonym with Rhyme. She raps, but she does not appear to resemble limes... Her sister Tyme is taimu[タイム] like the herb thyme. I dont know why the english localization felt the need to remove the "h" in both of these.
Tulip's name was already Rippu[リップ] as in Lip from tulip.
Grusha/guruusha[グルーシャ] I've done before too. He's named in Russian, grusha[груша]: "pear." His big winter coat makes his head and torso pearshaped.
Tumblr media
Rika's name is Chiri[チリ] like Chilipeppers, the genus Capsicum. Some other languages opted to name her after cayenne, but the English name Rika comes from Paprika. Funny enough it has nothing to do with Chili from Unova, as his name, like all his brothers', was originally a reference to corn, not any sort of pepper.
Poppy is popii[ポピー] is poppy. Although they come in a few colors they all have the distinctive black center, which I assume is meant to be reflected in the design of Poppy's hair.
It's just Larry/Aoki again...
Hassel's name in Japanese is Hassaku[ハッサク] from hassaku[八朔] aka the "jagada," a type of orange cultivated in Japan, known for being larger than most oranges; about the size of a grapefruit.
Geeta's name is Omodaka[オモダ] from Omodaka[沢瀉] a tree called the threeleaf arrowhead/Chinese arrowhead (Sagittaria trifolia). Its also prominently featured in Japanese family crests, like that of the Sawada, included above.
Tumblr media
Might as well get Team Star is in on this too! In the same way Guzma and Plumeria were kind of villainous alternatives to trial captains, for bug and poison type respectively, the Team Star sub-bosses kind of occupy a sort of pseudo/demi-gym leader status.
Giacomo's name is Piinya[ピーニャ] as in Piña:"Pineapple." His puffy autumn uniform vest and spiky hair makes him look like a pineapple.
Mela's name is Meroko[メロコ] seemingly taken from the Meloco... Of melocotón, Spanish word for "peach." Her red is a little too vibrant for it to be obvious, but her yellow to red hair appears to be peach inspired.
Atticus's name is Shuumei[シュウメイ] from Shumeigiku[秋明菊] Japanese name of a flower called the "fall-blooming anemone"(Anemone hupehensis japonica). It comes in a few shades of pink and violet that seem to match the poison type color motif.
Ortega's name is just a tiny tweak from Orutiga[オルティガ]:"Ortiga" spanish name for nettle, a broad family of herbs known for their stinging hairs.
Eri's Japanese mame is Biwa[ビワ] from biwa[枇杷]: "loquat"(Eriobotrya japonica) a tree with a long history of its fruit and leaves bring used for food and tea. It is sometimes erroneously called the "Japanese Plum."
Tumblr media
And just to round things out a little...
Nemona's English name came from her Japanese name, Nemo[ネモ] from the Nemo nemphilia, a broad range of flowers known for their baby blue color. Oddly thats not reflected in her actual design..
Laughably Arven's name was Pepaa[ペパー]:"Pepper" and you would think it would refer to... You know... peppers. But given the English name, Arven from Mentha arvensis, it's actually a reference to peppermint which does make sense with his herb theme.
Penny's name is Botan[ボタン] from Botan[牡丹] Japanese name for the "tree Peony"(Paeonia suffruticosa) The peony has long standing cultural importance in China and by some proxy Japan, and is often compared to the Rose's prominence in Western Europe; this is incidentally why Chairman Rose's brother in Galar is named Peony. Incidentally this is likely why they had to name her Penny, as Peony had been taken.
Clavell's name is actually the same, Kuraberu[クラベル] approximating "Clavel" the Spanish name for the Carnation. He shares a flower name with Champion Diantha in Kalos.
Oops, first pass thru i forgot about the school faculty so i've added a post for those

A Nice Night at the Kaiju Bar
Before I forget again, I did a comic and this time with @spagonia for @ultra-zine's Vol. 3!!! This is my first comic collaboration where I get to do art instead. Spagonia's writing is so much fun and you should check out her other written works. Highly recommended! 👀✌
The comic itself is a crossover between two obscure Ultra media and characters:
Ultraman Nice - An Ultraman who debuted only in commercials as a means to advertise toys during the Tiga reruns in the late 90s and is a father of two children. While not completely obscure, he does make small appearances in stageshows and in web drama series as comedic relief.
Meitei! Kaiju Bar - A 2015 comedic web manga series by Aoki Ume that features various stories centered within the titular Kaiju Bar, and protag Uruma's experiences there working part-time. (You can read all the chapters here! It's in Japanese though.)
It's a lot funnier if you read it in the zine itself.
ALSO SPEAKING OF THE ZINE!!!
You can get the digital copy of Volume 3, alongside previous volumes now at Ko-fi! Which just opened recently!
Tumblr media
GRAB A COPY OF SHUWATCH!! AT KO-FI!!!
Proceeds for the zine will go towards Ultraman Foundation.

Japan’s fifth empress regnant, Genshō (680-748), ruled after her mother, Empress Genmei. Like her mother, she was a protector of culture and a reformer.
From Mother to Daughter
When Empress Genmei abdicated in 715, she passed the throne to her daughter instead of her sickly and too-young grandson. This created a unique case in Japanese history, marking the Nara period as the pinnacle of female monarchy in Japan. Unlike previous female sovereigns, Genshō had never been married before.
Her reign marked the height of the Nara state. One of her major achievements was the compilation of the Yōrō code in 718, a faithful copy of the earlier Taihō code. It was widely distributed throughout the country, ensuring effective central administration. This code became the legal basis of government for the next two centuries.
Cultural Contributions
Like her mother, Genshō made significant cultural contributions. In 720, the Nihon Shoki, a work aiming to produce a national history of Japan and the imperial family, was completed and officially sanctioned. Using diverse sources such as Chinese and Korean documents, government records, and house journals, it covered a longer period than the earlier Kojiki, including the reign of Empress Jitō, in a scholarly tone.
Interestingly, the two chronicles linking the imperial family to the sun goddess Amaterasu were sanctioned and promoted by female rulers.
Retired Empress
Genshō spent nine years on the throne. She stepped down in 724 to make way for her 23-year-old nephew, Emperor Shōmu (701-756). Unlike her mother, Genshō did not become a nun. She assumed the title of Daijō Tennō (or "retired emperor") and remained active for another 24 years.

Day four of color names! 青木 is read Aoki or Seiki. Breaking it down, 青 is read ao, sei, or shō, and it means blue or green. As we know, 木 is read ki, ko, boku, or moku, and it means tree.
So there's famously some overlap between blue and green in Japanese. I'm not gonna delve into it because I'm just some guy, but look: remember 青 as generally meaning blue, but also applying to a lot of plants/veggies that English speakers call green. It also refers to traffic lights and youthful inexperience, and when you're sick ("green around the gills"), your complexion is 青白い (aojiroi) blueish-white.
If you want to describe color but leave nothing up to chance, 緑 midori always means green, and you can learn some more specific blues, like 水色 mizuiro (literally 'water color') for light blue and 紺(色) kon(iro) for navy. There's a lot of more complex color vocabulary out there but that's enough for today, right?
