I think what a lot of j&h adaptations get wrong, is that ultimately, Jekyll is, at heart. A Cunt. Lots of adaptations like to write him as an innocent scientist, who got more than he bargained for when he drank the potion, and unleashed a monster, but in the novella, the only thing the potion really does, is change Jekyll's appearance. He created Hyde, and I think he had the opportunity to make Hyde into something good, but, because he's a cunt, he chose to use his alter ego as a force for evil and chaos. "Edward Hyde was alone in the ranks of evil"- of course he was, you never allowed him to be anything else. And Jekyll is fully aware of what he does as Hyde, he says it himself in his full statement, and he feels no remorse. He didn't create Hyde accidentally, he made Hyde because he wanted to do bad things and get away with it, without damaging his reputation.

In terms of “canon-compliant” zutara, I think often about how Zuko’s development is both his redemption and his doom.

Because how come the obsessive go-getter of the show does not fight harder against fate (bryke’s annoying ass) to save his beloved from putting herself into a rewardless martyr-like situation in the form of a marriage that serves as repopulation program? (Which I always thought was ridiculous).

He learns bit by bit to acknowledge and make up for his mistakes. He respects Katara above all else. He fights fair. He does not guilt-trip her nor treat her like a reward. He loves her. He gave his life for her. He would not have survived had she not been the exceptional person she is. He supports her decisions no matter what. He listens to her.

So when she tells him about her ridiculously good and selfish intentions of pandering (once again) to a non-celibate Monk who wishes to have her mother his children for the sake of airbending and his supposed affection that was born out of the self-insert of narrators who give way too much importance to childhood crushes for one’s babysitter, he might argue but he can’t help but love her and respect her decision, both horrified by the cruelty of fate (aka bryke) and filled with admiration for the person she has always been.

If Orpheus loved Eurydice too much not to turn back when she tripped behind him, then Zuko loved Katara way too much not to validate and support her terribly selfless decisions. Because how dare him be selfish and want her for himself. And how dare him tell her what to do after years of war.

It is terribly tragic because on the other side, a part of her wishes he had fought harder.

A “villain” turned “hero” sometimes can mean the upholding of ideals made by two men who enjoy shaming young girls for their choice of love interest. Sometimes, the lack of a “villain” to whisk away the princess from the “hero’s” hands means said princess will remain unacknowledged and forgotten in a narrative that turns it into something of her own volition, a narrative that ignores everything a beloved female character represented for the people she was made to represent (by their own words, must I say). It leaves the realm of picking the love interest (which honestly could simply not ever happened in any form and would still be better than this) and enters the realm of once again giving a poor treatment to a female main character who quite literally Drives the story from its beginning.

And just like Orpheus and Eurydice are doomed by fate, Katara and Zuko are doomed by Bryke. And surprisingly, Katara gets the worse of it.

Idk if you guys even care but it's actually so important to ME that Ford decides to leaves his toxic triangle ex bf on read, that he chooses to leave him where He's at instead of hunting him down bc now he's got better, He's got people who love him and he doesn't need to be chosen by a god to worship or to destroy him.

But it's also important to me that he still read! The! Book! He is not 100% detached from him and it makes sense! Bill used to be everything to Ford, he gave this relationship turned divorce 30 years of his life! Of course it leaves a mark! It can't be fully erased, he calls the looking back during the funeral bittersweet (a funeral is hosted at all!)

But he knows it wasn't good for him he knows better, he has better and he is healing. So he feels the itch to take a peek sometimes but he isn't going back.

They're not monsters to be mowed down, they're people. People who engage in genuine and understandable strife against authority figures who uphold systems of inequality.

Not really a request just a rant buttt yk how gepard can only revive himself once in a fight? (Depending on his eldions I’ll assume since I only have one) What if when the reader finally stabs him to ‘death’ but gepard is alive because yk revive the reader snaps and starts hunting him?

Like that one moment when you realize you done fucked up.

like how a mother sees their baby trapped under a car, she gets a rush of adrenaline and sudden strength and lifts up the car to get the baby out? tbh if i saw the reader snap like that i'd be like "sucks for gepard and all but i get it". but i'd be like way less worse about it obviously because i'm not insane.

anyway i know you said it wasn't really a request but i chose to write a piece inspired by this anyway~

the silvermane guards are closing in. everyone has judgement in their eyes, concluding things before you've even had a chance to speak. gepard is quickly coming to collect you. gepard landau, who you thought you'd killed, not ten minutes ago.

what have you done wrong? you've followed the amber lord your whole life, just as everyone else has. why have THEY ignored you? you pray and you pray and you cry and call for THEM, and still- nothing. in fact, with every passing day, gepard only seems to get stronger and more intimidating.

without even realising it, you're crying. again.

when he reaches you, he'll probably stroke your head, rub your back, keep up the perfect image that everyone else has of him, and your voice will cease to exist.

you will gain the ability to destroy any shield that blocks your path.

you can feel the heat of THEIR gaze, but it's not the one whose approval you've chased. finally, an aeon has cast THEIR gaze upon you, who has been betrayed again and again. your hopelessness starts to die before the all-consuming fire of rage.

perhaps qlipoth has realised THEIR mistake, or perhaps this was THEIR goal all along- gepard is changing, very rapidly. it's obvious to anyone who looks.

and in return, you will crush this planet to dust.

he stands before you with his shield in hand. qlipoth must be speaking to him, just as nanook is speaking to you. which way, darling? will you go with an up-and-coming emanator of preservation, who you'll never escape from again...

...or will you accept the flame of destruction, and carve your own path forward?
