Monkey!Kuzon - a bit more explanation here. Mostly, I was trying to fill out the miraculous roster, cause AtLa only has a few “main” characters, I was trying to find some named characters the Gaang is shown being friends with who are roughly their age. I didn’t list Jet or his friends, cause, honestly, what exactly would their story be?? How do they integrate? Like, I’m sure you could do something, I just couldn’t really think of anything at the time. But also, I realized all the friends of the Gaang belong to Katara, Sokka, or Suki, later Zuko - Aang and Toph don’t really have any that are unconnected from them. In Toph’s case, she was raised super sheltered, and never got a chance to meet anyone, while Aang HAD friends, but they’re all mostly dead, except Bumi, because of the 100 years in ice thing. And we already have Bumi here being an old man. The only other friend Aang really mentions is Kuzon, the Fire Nation kid who … I think there’s a short story about the pair of them fighting off poachers? Anyway, I was basically imagining Kuzon as “Le Chien Kim, but Animal Lover and Environmentalist Advocate”. He would have grown up next door to Aang and Gyatso, and that’s how the pair are friends. As for names … I want to say Tarzan or Mowgli, but I feel like, even in universe, those would get him visits from lawyers.

Now, briefly into ships - this is just me spitballing my random headcanons, PLEASE TO ALL READING THIS, WE ARE HAVING FUN, LET’S NOT BRING THE ATLA SHIPWARS HERE! THIS IS JUST ME SPITBALLING! THEY CAN ALL BE CHANGED!

so, Katara/Aang. Aang I see as non-binary - they don’t mind which pronouns you use, but mostly uses he/they when referring to himself. Katara believes she is straight, but is actually bi with a bigger attraction to males.

Sokka is poly-pansexual. His relationships start with Sokka/Yue, until Yué realizes she’s actually AroAce, and they break up. Then later Sokka/Suki, which morphs into Zuko/Sokka & Sokka/Suki, which changes to Zuko/Sokka/Suki. Suki’s bi, while Zuko is … Zuko (demi-pan, but never has the words for it till WAY later).

Toph is Aro, or at least grayromantic, as is Teo. Teo I also see as trans, but that might just be me.

Mai/Ty Lee eventually becomes Mai/Ty Lee/Azula. (Sexuality uncertain, but my cousin does call them the “Deadly Lesbians”.) There’s a brief Mai/Zuko, but only to get Mai’s parents to back off and leave her alone.

Haru is our only totally straight guy, congrats man, you are our cishet+!

Totally get the thing on Kuzon. Like yeah I’m trying to think of other characters to fill out the Hero team and other than Jet’s group there aren’t a lot. There’s a reason I dragged Jin into this(other than the fact that I love her)

And yeah I’ve been turning Jet and co over in my head trying to think of what they’d be and I can’t think of anything for them because there’s so many changes to the base setup.

AS FOR SHIPS

I have my ships I like and while I do take suggestions it’s my au and I get the nonsense!

I see the Zuko/Sokka/Suki and raise you adding Jin in there.

Swinging to Yue: I always have mixed feelings in some AUs because I love her and Sokka in Canon but most AUs they never really work out. And in this one idk why they wouldn’t exactly? Like nothing gets in the way. Maybe if I write Sokka starting the Suki relationship first and then while they’re poly they’re not at a ‘hey how do you think about another person?’ discussion stage when they meet Yue? And then by the time they are at that stage either they’ve moved on or Yue has her own partner?

That said. Yue/Azula. Any time I have the chance for them I take it. Like the equal opposite you see my vision.

I also have this weird soft spot for Toph/Ty Lee. Probably has something to do with that post of ‘Ty Lee teaches Toph to walk on her hands’ thing because as funny as that post is these two are menaces it’s great, the amount of trust involved in it!

My one original thought:

So like. The Gaang has a range of ages. And in atla that’s fine due to the circumstances. But here it’s kind of a question of ‘how do they all meet/become friends/etc if they never really meet’? so I’m gonna make shit up to squish them into the same grade in school. 

Aang and Toph skipped a grade. Homeschooling put them a bit ahead of their peers in public school so they just got placed ahead.

On the flipside, Zuko got held back a grade due to the whole ‘being kicked out and horrifically scarred’ thing. Like between the mental and physical care he’d need he missed a lot of class that year so just. Repeat the year.

I am going to share these quotes one by one first:

Suchin is not that good of a cook:

Like I can imagine suchin tries to cook food but the food will turn out a lot more spicy for anyone else to eat. Hatsune and hanzo can eat it since they are from the Netherrealm and the heat is too high there also spirit realm has a lot of spicy food.

The food will be okay for those two but for others it will be hell because they can't handle the spicy food suchin cooks especially kuai liang he grew up in the lin kuei so spicy food wasn't regular much and only ate it to increase his flames. Now whenever suchin cooks someone has to be with her to make sure she doesn't add too much spice and that person most capable of the job is our queen harumi.

The most common babysitter:

The most common babysitter for kung jin, lian, hatoru, ryu and huo would be kitana because she adores and loves to babysit them and kitana is hatoru and huo's God mother and hatsune trusts her enough to baby sit them.

For satoshi, frost and takeda it would be tanya and li mei who would babysit them or sometimes bi-han and sareena but for kids it's definitely tanya and li mei because they get to spend some time together with their friends and they will cause chaos in outworld.

Double dates:

Double dates with the siblings and their partners kung lao, hatsune and kenshi, suchin they would be definitely going on double dates together whenever they have a chance like they will go to a family restaurant or go traveling to the spirit realm once in a while. The first double date was a surprise success as they went through a tour across Japan exploring sites and eating food together.

Subscorprumi and bireena will definitely have the most chaotic double dates in the family I head canon they will do sparring dates and picnic dates with each other but most of the time I feel like it's board games with each other because of the competitiveness and sometimes jadesmoke will join them so now they have a tradition.

The main chef of the family:

Hands down kung lao man didn't even know he could cook really good food until hatsune injured her hand and kenshi was arriving with suchin for a stay at home date at their house. Kung lao surprisingly cooked the best dumplings because he was taught by the queen herself Madame bo!.

You thought eating was the only thing he can do. Every time kung lao cooks something hatsune would always give him kisses as a reward for his hard work but she also wants seconds. Hatoru, ryu, kung jin, lian and huo loved their father's food along side their mother's.

Harumi when she tried it wanted the recipe for the food and hanzo was surprised while kuai liang was stunned when they tried his food and the wonton soup kung lao made was better than bi-han's. Hanzo would always sneak in for seconds and will always be caught by hatsune because she also wants seconds.

Bi-han was shocked when another person made a wonton that surpassed his challenged kung lao to a wonton cook off and kung lao won because of a secret recipe he had used from madam bi and will not reveal it till this day. Bi-han for the first time accepted defeat because the wonton kung lao made were heavenly.

THE MASTER CHEF SUCHIN:

Ok, if I remember correctly, Thai food is really spicy, so imagine Suchin is not really overseasoning the food because she’s bad— I mean, not only because she’s bad (she is still pretty bad)— but also because she’s trying to honour her Thai roots?

She remembers eating her mother and grandmother’s food and that very unique spicy flavour and how much she loves it! So she tries to recreate the recipe, but she doesn’t quite know how, and she’s not that great at cooking, so at some point she will start seasoning the food and throw the spices but then will think "hmm, that doesn’t seem spicy enough", and then the overseasoning happens!

And sometimes Kenshi will walk by the kitchen to get himself a sandwich or something and hear the sound of spices being added, and then when he’s about to leave he STILL hears the spices! And he’s like “Su? Isn’t it… too much seasoning?” and she will assure him that “Nah, that’s just how Grandma taught me!” and Kenshi will be uncertain but brush it off like “I mean… if grandma says so…” cause who is HE to argue with someone about listening to their ancestors, his grandma is in his SWORD!

He will regret later on not questioning Grandma Bunnag though…

Oh! Imagine if our local hellborns, Hanzo, Hatsune and Sareena, not only could withstand Suchin's spicy food, but actually ADORED IT as it reminded them of Netherrealm cuisine!

Suchin was glad to see her food being so well received! She even let Sareena take the leftovers with her so she could share with her sisters (Ashrah in Earthrealm, and Jataaka and Kia back in Netherrealm)

No one had the heart to tell Suchin her food was unbearable to the Lin Kuei brothers, despite his best efforts, Bi-Han would genuinely feel sick afterwards! So the whole crew came up with a plan to protect their friends, Hanzo and Sareena would discreetly snatch the food from their plates whenever Suchin looked away (usually distracted by another member of their group).

Harumi started to offer herself to help, she would replace Suchin's spices without her notice and sometimes makes other extra dishes that could be digested by the siblings, "just in case someone is extra hungry" Was her excuse.

EDENIAN BABYSITTERS:

Kitana loves to share stories of Outworld. Old legends and folklore, she takes great pride in her heritage and loves to see the excitement in the children whenever she says she has another story to share!

Queen Sindel is usually very busy with the kingdom's affairs, but she makes sure to separate a few storybooks for Kitana to share with the children.

Satoshi and Takeda were particularly interested in the stories featuring their mothers, who were both Umgadi in their youth. They loved to hear of their victories in battle, but they secretly love even more to hear about their shenanigans and embarrassed moments, which Li Mei would gladly share!

No one quite knows the details, not even Suchin herself. She refuses to ask more of Delia as she believes whatever her family left behind it's not worthy return. She is happy she found another way to connect with her Outworld heritage through the Umgadi.

And of Ashrah, who also has great stories, but as she also lives in Earthrealm, she usually just flies by and tells her stories herself! The kids love when she takes them to fly!

CHAOTIC DOUBLE DATES:

Harumi and Suchin will have Umgadi hangouts, they will go to Outworld to meet Jade, Tanya and Li Mei. They will remember the old days when they were still training and every time they caused mischief

Harumi: Remember that time we faked chickenpox to avoid Li Mei's squat sequence?

Suchin: Ha! That was not even accurate to real chickenpox!

Tanya and Jade: *laugh with the memory*

This meet up ended with the girls doing squat sequences.

To prevent situations like that, Harumi and Suchin would bring the Edenians to Earthrealm instead. They would take them to eat Earthrealm food, specially junk food (they enjoyed seeing Li Mei struggling to eat them)

From time to time they would bring their partners too to share stories!

THE BEST COOK:

Though Bi-Han accepted defeat regarding the Wonton he still wanted to understand what exactly made Kung Lao's so special, so he made his personal challenge to figure that out, he didn't mind the trial and errors, he actually liked the challenge!

Sareena liked it even better because she was the one he assigned to try his recipes, and though they are yet to rival Kung Lao's they are still delicious!

Bi-Han and Kung Lao have friendly competitions, they bring different dishes to the family dinners and everyone will gladly try them all ;)

I love Jason being a literature nerd, but what's a more fun facet of this is his Jane Austen Fanboyness which easily leads into Romance lover Jason.

Alot of this idea sprouts from Dead On Main [Jason x Danny Fenton/Phantom], but I also am a multi shipper so this could be put to literally anyone with Jason [b₳tce$tor$ dni, don't even].

The down side of my love for this up and coming trop it that I am not a classical literature girly, nor do I read regency novels [all I got are clips of bridgeton & queen charlotte]. But I had a mad manwha faze during middle school, and lemme tell you Jason would thrive in those world tbh.

I have a sad headcanon. The mothers aren't forced to stay after have brought the children to the gate. They can return to the house and let the children with the demons. Isabella make the choice to stay and watch everything until the end because she considers that she must stay until the end, that she can't abandon them at this moment after have took care of them for years. Also a part of her see that as a punishment. She is accomplice of this system, she chooses to live by sacrifing those children. And the most important is that she LOVES them. So she stays until the very end because she feels she deserves to suffer and that she must stay at their side until it's over.

Norman and Emma have seen Isabella spoke with the demons. It's because they are used to see her since it has been 12 years, almost 13, that she is doing that so their discussion seems to show that she is as much cruel than them.

And she seems to be indifferent and cold because 1) no way she show weakness to demons (and that's useless anyway) 2) she is horribly used to it so acting cold is more easy after all those years 3) closing her heart in those moments is the best way to doing that without breaking. 4) we see that she kept the toys of all the kids as precious memories. She could send it in another orphenages and forget about it but no. She kept all of those toys.

So i'm pretty sure that it deeply hurt her to see them die, but she watches it because she feel she deserve to suffer and must see everything because looking away would be even more betraying them.

(Really both the mother and the son are masochists :/)

Isabella's a queen at compartmentalizing though, so maybe she views staying until the very end, as she stresses to Emma and Norman in chapter 25/episode 8, as her bi-monthly penance for sustaining her life as long as she can.

I like to think after childbirth Isabella was granted the mercy of having some time to recuperate instead of immediately being thrust into being a Mom so it's less than twelve years (as general practice and because of her amazing potential becoming the youngest Mom in Grace Field's known history, you'd think a few months to avoid any potential health risks and finalizing her transition to plant #3 would be a worthwhile cost for headquarters), and because I'm a masochist, I like to headcanon that Ray, Norman, and Emma were the first children raised solely by her and not overlapping with the previous Mom of plant #3 (excluding the child who arrived between Norman and Emma who was unfortunately shipped out at some point before turning eleven), so I see her arriving at plant #3 sometime during November or December of 2033.

Still, that's roughly a decade of going through this with a minimum of sixty children, not counting any children Ray potentially caused to be shipped out early with his experimentation with the tracker deactivator. She might not have done it with the first few, maybe thinking it was potential evidence that could be used against her as an indication of weakness, but eventually it does amass to quite a collection.

So here you got the specific queer thoughts I've had for the main gang for a while:

Julius - That man is so bi to me. Genuinely, the way he and Charles interact with each other is so important to me. Like, it always felt like "We understand each other on such a deep level and we are so comfortable with each other", especially in the second movie. Julius is a disaster when it comes to instantly falling in love with every woman he meets, but with Charles everything is unshakable. Charles - Gay as can be. Yeah, he's already written as a flamboyant character... but I can only again point at what I wrote above. Konstanzia - This is based on absolutely nothing, but she is bi to me. She should've had the opportunity to interact with more female characters who are not antagonistic just to see what the vibe is there, you know? I am simply saying she would've had the same reaction to the Witch Queen in the second movie as her husband Julius had. ANYWAY, yeah these three are in a polycule in my brain. Very much Konstanzia going "This is my husband Julius and his boyfriend Charles! :>" Hui Buh - This man is important to me (to no-one's surprise), because he's several hundred years removed from when the movies happen due to being a ghost for so long. Sure, he'll learn new words for concepts, but... well, it didn't really matter back when he was still alive. Still, if Tommy or Ophelia ever asked, he would probably settle with panromantic. Sexuality wise... he's internally unsure. The new words still don't feel right, even as he gets used to hearing them. He's the kinda guy who'll say "I'll take anyone who'll have me!" and that's just genuinely how it is. So, technically, this man is full pan, but he just doesn't use the word. Queer though? He'll happily call himself queer! Hell, aside from all the romance, you know he has some fun stuff going on with his gender too!

Omg so. Ginny/Luna (Linny) is a classic. Probably the softest ship I will ever sail, y'know? But also: Fleurmione. Fleurmione is 10/10. Two fierce, competent, bold, loyal ladies!!!! Also: throwing Pansy at them is fun, too. Ginsy, Pansmione, even Lunsy! But I think my top of the top have to be Linny and Fleurmione due to my love of them and also the fact that I've read several great fics. So it's like I love them in theory and in practice.

I'm gonna kinda skew this question a bit from what I think its spirit is. Idk that I have anything that could properly be called a guilty pleasure.

I will say ships I love in theory and have enjoyed in practice, but feel like I need to see more of would be Cissamione and Minmione!! SWEET, LOVELY AGE GAPS YES PLEASE AND THANK YOU. I genuinely need a good Hermione/Minerva romance and I don't want to write it myself haha. I feel like there's so much potential yet to explore in both cases and I have such a THIRST for it.

Grumbling and deciding if he really wants to get out of bed or not, then ultimately getting up anyway because everyone has to go take that morning piss eventually. Sol's hygiene is something I've thought about a lot but haven't been able to quite figure out. He definitely puts a lot of effort into his outfits, getting them custom made AND wearing clean white pants, but then his hair sticks together in solid, stiff, clumps like it's kinda greasy?? I think he might be one of those people who maybe at least washes their face daily and does laundry often but is too lazy to take a real shower every day

🔥 Favorite locations headcanon:

It's sort of implied through his character specific maps in the early GG games that he might be from New York/New York City and in Begin he has a whole daily habit of going out and laying in the grass under a tree every day. But also in the later GG games he has some big desert themes. I think he likes being alone in nature, though if you asked him about where his favorite place to be was he'd give some tough guy answer like "at a bar" or something like that, but in his heart he's imagining a state park in rural New York up in Appalachia somewhere quiet and green.

Can I get headcanons for an au where Bruce adopted the kids when they /were/ babies, please?

Use the bathroom, get comfortable, and maybe have some tissues on hand.

For these headcanons, we’re gonna assume they were adopted in order of age, and that they’re all under 18. So Dick and Babs are 16 (with Babs being older), Harper is 14, Cass is 13, Jason is 12, Tim is 7, Steph and Duke are both 5 (with Steph being older), Carrie is 3, and Damian is 1. Yes, I’m aware that it diverges from canon age gaps but once you keep reading you’ll see why I did that.

Now for the headcanons (in no particular order):

Alfred is “Grandpa” and Bruce is anything from “Dad”, “Pops”, “Old man”, “Baba”, etc. All the other adults, like Kate or Clark, are aunts and uncles.

Steph and Duke compete over everything, like who can tie their shoes the fastest or learn to ride a bike first. Steph makes a point of letting everyone know she’s older, but Duke fires back with the fact that he’s taller. They’re both at the top of their kindergarten class and are known for butting heads, but God help anyone who decides to pick on one of them.

Harper got her first period at school while wearing white shorts. Thankfully, Dick and Babs came in clutch.

At school, Kon told Tim that he got ten dollars every time he lost a tooth. Tim tried to hack the system by pulling a bunch of teeth out at once (thankfully to no avail) until someone caught him.

Babs has a different secret handshake with each person.

When Damian first came along, everyone expected Carrie to be angry or jealous since she’d no longer be the baby of the family. And she was a little jealous at first. But the moment she saw him, her eyes went wide and she whispered, “He’s so tiny” and vowed to protect him with everything she had.

The last business trip Bruce took was when Cass was a baby, and the reason why it was his last one was that while he was abroad, Alfred sent him a video of Cass taking her first steps and he burst into tears in the middle of a meeting because he wasn’t there to witness it in person.

Dick once used Damian as a wingman to pick up girls. It worked so well that Jason tried the same thing, only to have it grossly backfire on him.

Whenever Bruce needs a break, Alfred will call everyone to the living room for one of his infamous spy stories.

Cass is the queen of April Fool’s.

Tim, Steph, and Duke regularly climb on each other’s shoulders to try to reach the cookie jar.

Harper is a pro at getting gum out of people’s hair. Tim is a pro at the exact opposite. 

Bruce gives Dick “the talk”. Dick then gives it to Harper who gives it to Cass who gives it to Jason and by then it’s so misconstrued by then that Bruce has to re-give it to all the kids.

One time Jason lashed out at school and it led to the teachers referring him to a therapist. Bruce stayed with him during the first appointment and Jason admitted to feeling unwanted because of what some kids at school said. Meanwhile, back at home, all the other siblings were trying to get their names to be Damian’s first word, like a competition. None of them ended up winning because when the other two came home, Damian called out to Jason. (And Jason cried on the spot because it didn’t matter what people said at school, he was wanted by the right people).

Group outings with the Kents or the Allens are a normal occurrence.

Harper gave Bruce a heart attack when she DIYed her hair dye and piercings.

The first time Tim saw a shooting star, he was convinced that aliens had arrived to take over the world. His conspiracy-driven panic spread to his younger siblings and that’s how Alfred found them all hiding in a blanket fort wearing saucepans as helmets.

Steph once got lost at the mall and the first thing she did was buy ten Build-A-Bears. 

Cass regularly carries her younger siblings like suitcases.

Bruce never rushed Dick into getting a license or helping out around the house.

Harper once snuck on a train to the next town without telling anyone because she wanted to ask Kate advice on coming out.

Nobody got any sleep for the forty-eight hours when Damian’s favorite stuffed animal went missing.

Duke is a LEGO kid. Carrie is a horse girl. Together they created the ultimate toy equine sanctuary.

Bruce can’t ground the kids. They’ve unionized.

Jason is no longer allowed to pick movies on account of the time he chose an R-rated slasher.

It’s an open secret that Cass accidentally left Tim at a haunted house once.

Duke once snuck Damian to school for Show And Tell. Steph ratted him out almost right away.

Jason tried to make his younger siblings reenact Shakespeare. It lasted a good thirty seconds before it dissolved into people hitting each other with props.

As a big mystery/conspiracy theory person, Tim was wholly convinced that Damian was an extraterrestrial because the first time he saw him, it was at the hospital where Damian was hooked up to a bunch of machines after he was born. It wasn’t until after three different people explained the concept of preemies to him did Tim finally get it.

Carrie loves to play dress-up and will rope in anyone in the vicinity.

Tangled Salt Marathon - You're Kidding Me

So we’ve finally come to the last of season two’s filler episodes. Let’s see if we can knock this one out real quick. 

Summary: The front door of the mysterious seashell estate vanishes, trapping the group. They try to find another way out but find a spinning top whose magic regresses Cassandra and Lance into toddlers and Shorty into a baby.  They’ve only have an hour to find the top and reverse the effects or the changes become permanent. Unfortunately neither of Rapunzel’s or Eugene’s parenting methods keep their now childish friends on task. 

So Why Did No One Stand Watch Last Night?

They were all sleeping right next to the entrance, and after the run in with the mirror monsters, you would think that they would have taken turns standing watch. 

But nope, the front door vanishes when no one was looking cause they don't have any foresight. 

A Low Budget Doesn’t Excuse Filler

Like most of season two, this is yet another episode that adds very little to the overall story. It’s slightly better than the Return of Quaid or Curses, but not by much. I put it on the same level as The Forest of No Return, as I do like the mains’ development, but there’s really no reason why such episodes exist to begin with. 

The meta reason for staying in certain places for three episodes, instead of only one or two, is because of budgetary reasons. The crew have to build new sets and models for every new location or person the cast comes across. This costs money to make, so the higher ups wanted to reuse assets. Which is understandable, but not an excuse for utilizing them poorly.  

If you need to stay in one area or have characters reappear, then you need to give story reasons for that. Ones that tie back to the overall narrative and/or the mains’ character arcs. 

The shell house and Matthews should be more important than what they are as they both have connections to the ultimate big bad of the series.Adria shouldn’t be wasted for a whole episode when she’s the only one driving the plot in season two and has limited appearances. Vardaros and its people shouldn’t be a one and done thing if you’re going to spend so much time setting them up. And there’s still one off episodes, locations, and characters who aren’t brought back and add nothing 

Not only does this make for a weaker story, it also undermines the cost saving measures that you tried to implement to begin with.  

This Isn’t Representation! 

Get it?! 

She’s a top! 

She’s totally gay, but like not really, cause this can also be interpreted as a dominatrix joke, and there’s no other real indication of her orientation outside her like smiling at her best friend/crush/sister sometimes and keeping that rose her creepy ex-boyfriend gave her. 

And don't give me any bullshit excuses about Disney not letting the crew make Cassandra canonly gay/bi. 

The Owl House aired just this year, the same year as Tangled’s final season. Also Globby and Carl from Big Hero Six were both confirmed to be a couple on screen a month after this episode came out. Both shows would have been in development at the same time as Tangled was. Both would have been subject to the same regulations and restrictions while writing their stories. 

It isn’t “Disney” that stopped the storyboard artists from having Cass be a confirmed lesbian, it’s Chris and Ben, the head writers themselves, who failed to write it into the story properly, if at all. 

Chris is the one who made Raps and Cass “sisters”. Chris is the one who wouldn’t tell the crew about his ‘twists’. Chris is the one who had Cass crush on Andrew, even after he tried to kill her. Chris is the one who made Cassandra ‘straight’ and has since used gay baiting to keep her fanbase in his pocket. 

Like I am really damn sick and tired of Casspunzel stans defending Chris on twitter, when he’s the very one who sunk thier ship to begin with. I’m also really fed up with certain fans trying to bully others for not accepting their “Cass is a lesbian” headcanons as fact because what the storyboarders say on twitter after the show is over with isn’t gospel and isn’t real rep. 

I don’t care if you ship Cass with Raps or headcanon her as being gay. Ships and headcanons are great and can be a lot of fun. But fuck you if you ever try to shame people for not sharing your ships/headcanons. Not only is it biophobic and acephobic to insist that there’s only ever a binary option when it comes to orientation and shipping, but it also reinforces harmful stereotypes and tropes about people in the queer community. 

Like, yes, I personally may be an introverted angry bitch who’s an LBGTQA member and activist, but that doesn’t mean that every introverted bitchy woman in media is a lesbian. What kind of message does that send people when that’s the only character archetype that’s given representation or is loudly proclaimed as ‘gay’ by the wider audience? Fuck that noise! 

I Know Humor is Subjective but...WHY?

Why did we give the baby a beard? How does that logically work? Did anyone outside of the crew actually find this funny? 

TTS has like this one out of touch dude throwing out jokes that don’t really land with the target audience. Fans have called it ‘boomer humor’ but it’s actually ‘Gen-X’ humor. Not only because Chris and Ben are Gen Xers but because this is the type of crap my older brother would find hilarious. 

Gen Xers are between Boomers and Millennials and so their humor is this weird blend of gross out shock humor, ironic nihilism, and out of date stereotypes that are only mildly better than those of the previous generation before them. They’re the generation who gave us Beavis and Butthead, South Park, and Clerks. 

That’s not a criticism of Gen X as a generation, but rather just an acknowledgment that they’re worlds away from the neo-dada absurdism, more socially conscious, and globalized humor of Gen Z.    

So Why Is the Bad Guy Telling the Heroes How to Foil His Plans? 

Like he not only tells them how to fix their problem and how long they got in order to do so, but he also informs them how it happened in the first place. This goes directly against his plans. Had he simply said nothing and stayed out sight, then Raps and Eugene would have been lost for the full hour and most likely not have saved everyone on time. 

I like to headcanon that Mathews is just “that asshole” that loves to taunt and tease but in a that manner that gives him plausible deniability. He also may just be bored, since he’s a ghost trapped in one place all the time. Yet that still doesn’t change the fact that he shot himself in the foot here. 

Raps and Young Cass’s Relationship Is the Same as Raps and Adult Cass’s, and That Is a Problem. 

Condescending, manipulative, hypocritical, and bossy is the way Rapunzel treats everyone. She doesn’t understand the actual difference between a child and an adult. She only understands who she who she can and can’t boss  around. And those people that she can’t place under her thumb are labeled antagonists by the show. 

Nor does she actually care about what either kid Lance or kid Cass has to say. She’s just being proformative, and young Cass can see through that BS, which why her methods do not work. It’s not because she’s not ‘strict’ enough; it’s because she’s not being honest. 

Meanwhile Child Cassandra is just as combative, rude, bullying, and entitled as Adult Cassandra. In season three she regresses even further and becomes more violent than before.

Unlike Rapunzel, Cassandra wasn’t trapped in a tower for 18 years with zero human contact outside of her abuser. She escaped that fate and was raised in a loving home. That doesn’t mean that there won't be scars, but I still expect her to be more mature than her seven year old self. Just because she’s whining about not being special enough at 24 instead of screaming about the floor being lava doesn’t mean that she’s still not throwing a temper tantrum.  

Like I should not be seeing a replay/foreshadowing of their main conflict here. They aren’t children. They’re dynamic isn’t that of a mother and child. It’s not even a big sister looking out for a little sister type relationship. Its two immature women dragging innocent victims into their bitchy cat fight for dominance over the other.  

If you want me to take their issues seriously then give them real stakes to disagree over, mature behavior that I can root for, and a resolvement that doesn’t reverse any potential development that they could have had.    

Matthews Plan Makes Zero Sense

For starters, half the group being kids isn’t enough of a reason for Rapunzel to stay at the shell house. Even if the effects of the time top became permanent, then Raps and Eugene could just leave and take the kids with them. Either to finish the road trip, or go straight back to Corona. Not that there’s any real reason to get the Dark Kingdom anyways, nor is there a ticking clock stopping Raps from trying again later if she chose to. 

Rapunzel also is not obligated to become anyone’s mother. If she took them back to Corona than Cap would undoubtedly raise Cassandra all over again, and Lance and Shorty could be adopted by someone else. Any of the pub thugs might take them or even perhaps the King and Queen since they missed out on raising their actual daughter. Though for my money I’d get Monty or Xavier to take them in. They seem the most mature and both are shown to be good with kids. 

Then again Rapunzel has been shown twice now to not give a damn about abandoning orphans, so even the ‘dump them at an orphanage’ or ‘leave them alone in the woods to fend for themselves’ isn’t entirely off the table either. I wish I was joking, but I’m not. Sadly, only Eugene’s love for Lance might be the one thing to stop her from doing just so, and even that’s iffy. 

As for the missing door from earlier, if that was all that was stopping them from leaving then the time top shenanigans were fully unnecessary altogether. 

I Actually Like Eugene and Rapunzel’s Conflict Here; I Just Wish It Was In a Better Episode. 

Each of their viewpoints stem from their upbringing. 

Rapunzel is unique in that she was simultaneously emotionally abused and neglected while being physically spoiled. Especially once she found out that she was princess, where she was then handed nearly anything and everything she wanted. She doesn’t recognize that getting your every possible whim come true can be damaging. Nor does she have any comprehension of what living in poverty is like and how this many toys is wasteful to someone like Eugene who had so very little and stole to survive. 

She does however associate limits, boundaries, and orders with abusive behavior because she’s been denied autonomy and respect her whole life. She’s never seen what healthy parenting looks like and how rules can be applied correctly.     

To Rapunzel no orders is ‘freeing’ and ‘validation’ is all that is needed to get a child to listen to you. Which doesn’t work for her because she doesn’t understand that real communication is more than just giving a compliment now and then. 

Meanwhile Eugene lacked any sort of anchor at all. He was left to his own devices at a young age and had no one to rely on for emotional needs and, after leaving the orphanage, no one to provide physical needs either. 

It’s telling that he and Lance latched onto Quaid as the only authority figure in their life, despite Quaid never out right adopting them. He was the only sense of stability that they had who they could trust wouldn’t hurt them, despite being strict with them. 

And now that Eugene has gotten older and is reformed, he can probably understand why Quaid was so harsh on him and Lance. Quaid probably did more to try and help them turn from a life crime than even Rapunzel did. Like meeting Rapunzel was the inciting incident that inspired Eugene to make that leap, but the groundwork was already laid out for him to do so elsewhere. Things like his good communication skills, respect and empathy of others, and understanding of boundaries had to be learned from somewhere, and if not from the Sheriff of Vardaros than who? 

What I’m getting at is that, while Rapunzel rejects her parents methods but then fails to break her learned habits from them anyways, Eugene is the reverse. He’s come to embrace his mentor’s teachings, but he fails to implement them correctly because he’s not Quaid. Being authoritative isn’t his strong suit. It goes against his usual nature as the easy going person that he is and so any attempts to come across as forceful fail as they’re hollow. 

Kids know authenticity and genuineness when they see it. The children reject Rapunzel because she’s not being real with them, yet they also reject Eugene cause he’s not being honest with himself. 

It’s a complex and mature conflict. Neither person is fully right nor wrong, and only by learning from each other and adopting both methods can they achieve their goal. 

TTS can be deep when it wants to be. There’s a good foundation here for mature themes and complex characterization. It’s just the series doesn’t ever commit to it. 

Whatever personal drama going on here about two young adults trying to cope with their past traumas and how that affects their current life and future goals is completely lost in the magical goofy antics and low stakes situation. Even the stuff about Eugene and his relationship with Quaid is reduced to nothing but a one off joke rather than being genuinely explored as a point of development.  

Imagine how much more powerful things would have been if Angry and Red were brought along on the trip. If this argument was over them and whether or not they should adopt the two girls themselves or consider other options. That would be something with real weight. Something with a choice that had actual consequences attached to it. Something that would permanently affect all involved parties. Something that wouldn’t make the two leads look like outright dicks for abandoning two children for a second damn time in a row.    

You Have 70 Feet of Magical, Indestructible Hair! Why Are You Afraid of a Bunch of Dogs!?

You’ve fought off giant monsters, killer robots, and supernatural beings with magical powers. What do you mean you can’t hold off a pack of guard dogs while busting down a stuck door? Why is Eugene the shield for everyone and not the actual unbreakable hair that you use as a shield all the damn time? And Why did we have to rely on Shorty again to be the deus ex machina of the episode? 

At this point the writers should have just made him Demantius instead of the monkey.   

What Happened To This New Dream? Where Did It Go In Season Three?

Most fans who do enjoy season two happen to be big New Dream fans as this is by far and away the best season for them. I’ll admit that the series, up to this point, had me actively liking them together, despite being originally lukewarm to the pairing in the movie. 

Their conflicts were for the the most part mature and real. They learned from one another equally and had open communication when it didn't involve ‘marriage is a trap’ BS. Things, like compromising on differentiating future goals, honesty and communication, and making time for one another and extending effort into a relationship while being true to yourself are all relatable issues. 

Even today's episode featured the topic of having kids and parenting. Which is a discussion you absolutely need to have with your prospective spouse before entering into any long term commitments and signing any legal contracts. For real, I’ve seen marriages fall apart because they didn’t agree on whether or not they wanted children. 

I don’t know what went down between writing season two and season three, but things quickly took a sharp turn away from this dynamic and nosedived into a pit of uncomfortable bullying and gross sexist implications here after. 

Matthews Plan Goes Against Zhan Tiri’s Plan 

Yeah so Matthews is one of Zhan Tiri’s disciples, but he apparently doesn’t know of her goals/plans, cause she needs Rapunzel and company to reach the moonstone, not stay stuck here. 

The meta reason for this that the Zhan Tiri’s story was altered at the last minute and the writers failed to make sure there was any sort of consistency between what they already set up and where they actually wound to actually taking the plot.  

The in universe reason is that Zhan Tiri is an impotent moron, but that’s not what the writers were going for so it’s a fail. 

Conclusion  

I like the New Dream stuff, and Matthews is at least entertaining despite being incompetent. Everything else about the episode is ‘meh’ tho.

Three headcanons form the basis for my characterization of Kyra in every story I’ve written her in, both in canon and in AU. Every time I write her, this is what I’m riffing on.

(Hang on, I’ve lost my train of thought. My eyes keep being drawn upward. I’m compelled to look at her. No wonder Kassandra’s captivated...)

ahem, so... Kyra is a control freak. There’s a reason why she’s leading the rebellion, not just fighting in it. She needs stability, to be in control of the situation, or at least have a solid plan to follow. It’s why Thaletas is appealing — he offers the stability of a Spartan citizenship by marriage. It’s why a life with Kassandra scares her — following a misthios around is a life of uncertainty. And yes, it’s why she’s a capital-T Top. This need for control also creates a delicious synergy with my next headcanon...

Kyra is insecure. She grew up on the streets and her skills are mostly self-taught. But she’s smart enough to know that a leader has to project confidence. She’s the poster child for impostor syndrome and fake-it-til-you-become-it. This is some nice, fertile storytelling ground because it gives her character a place to go.

Kyra is a quick study. She doesn’t know everything, but she’s smart, and driven, and learning is her thing. Honestly, I just want an excuse for her to nerd out over some literature and science, because it’s such a contrast to canon!Kassandra’s simpler loves of wine, women, and song. (This is a case where one canon line — Kyra saying, “Very poetic for someone covered in blood. I like it.” — was enough to send me galloping off with a new headcanon as far as it’ll take me.)

oh yeah, one last important thing:

I stan Kyra as a bi queen. (Or maybe empress?) I’ve never written a bisexual protagonist before, and as a Kinsey Six, I'm trying to do her justice as best I can. I’ve no intentions of hand-waving this aspect of her sexuality away, as it’s so easy to do when writing F/F ships.
