Alpha CC or Maxis Match? I use both, but in CASt I add more realistic textures for MM items if it's possible, detailed textures is really important for me. For hair I prefer now more realistic textures like @ifcasims or Plumblobs. Also I replace speculars to black in almost every item because I hate that shine.

Do you cheat your sims weight? No, I don`t care about this.

Do you move objects? I don`t build most of the time, but I use MOO for moving sims for photoshoots.

How has your “Sims style” changed throughout your years of playing? To be honest, it changes every day. But for example before I started this acc I preferred more maxis-match-ish style with simple matte hair textures and genetics and other stuff, because it was looking good in other people's screenshots. But after I understand that this style doesn`t suit my current aesthetic and now I use more realistic style. Also earlier I used less sliders and my sims faces was less diverse and also really really skinny no matter what their body type is. But my sims proportions have always tended to be realistic, I only liked the cartoon/anime-like style sims when I was much younger (like 10-13 smth).

Who’s your favorite CC creator? This list will be huuugee, but I love creators that made high-quality CC and can fit my aesthetic. How do you edit your pictures? I use Reshade with different presets (mostly by @erasabledinosaur or @intramoon), Photoshop CC 2017 (also installed Topaz Clean today) with these actions by @intramoon: SONDER, COLDWATER, BEAUTY QUEEN, LEAVING SALVATION. Also mess around in photoshop and/or use AI upscaler to make pics in better quality (I can turn on 4k HQ, but I always forgot about that). Sometimes I try something different but this is the base.

Okay my last post for Metamorphosis AU got an “OwO” from somebody so I’m gonna assume that means there is Interest.

So here’s some lore for the aliens and alien-adjacent characters for the AU

Benrey and Gordon

Benrey (and by extension Gordon) isn’t technically part of a species, but there are/were others like him. A lot of them were captured by Black Mesa and subsequently “pulled apart” for whatever materials made up their bodies while the vast majority fled for greener pastures after the fact.

He doesn’t have a true form either, at least not one that can be properly “rendered” into the simulated world they live in without crashing the game.

He wouldn’t be able to shift into a true form if he wanted anyways, Black Mesa kinda messed up his head and one of the things they broke was his shapeshifting ability, so he’s kinda stuck looking like Some Guy, but he can still fuck around with proportions and add extra limbs.

That “change in his DNA” that Coomer sensed was Benrey trying to shift out of human form. It didn’t work but it was still freaky so he counts that as a win.

When Gordon’s alien powers start blossoming he and Benrey can share dreams (very important for the plot) and Benrey can shapeshift into whatever Gordon’s brain imagines to be a True Form for Benrey, which happens to be a massive worm-thing, both inside and outside the dream; this has the accidental effect in that Gordon can ALSO become a Worm now. Whoops.

Benrey can be easily nullified by blue light, which is pretty much everywhere on Earth. Extended exposure to blue light will cause it to be less effective with time; the only consistent way to keep Benrey at bay is with TV and video games since the movements on screens is distracting.

Gordon can, with time, do everything Benrey can but with more clarity and intent since he didn’t get his brain scrambled by Black Mesa AND grew up on a planet filled to the brim with blue light.

Yes I’m going back to the worm thing. Gordon doesn’t know WHY his brain imagines Benrey’s true form to be a giant worm, Benrey doesn’t have thoughts about it he just likes turning into a worm to bother Gordon. He has intentionally blocked the front door 15 times within 3 days of unlocking Worm Mode and he cannot be stopped, he’s just so happy to not be stuck as Some Guy forever.

Yes, I do have pictures of The Worm. They will arrive with time.

G-Man and Tommy

Mr. Coolatta/G-Man, unlike Benrey, is part of his own species, most of whom have taken the form of the exact same middle-aged human man. They have knowledge of multiple timelines and dimensions, and the ones that decide to go into “work” are often tasked with a specific timeline to keep watch of.

Tommy is biologically G-Man’s son, but whether he spawned via budding or was born to a human mom is intentionally left undiscussed. Tommy doesn’t know, and he doesn’t want to know.

Tommy grew up human and his DNA is 100% human.

The Resonance Cascade activated Tommy’s G-Man powers. Unlike Gordon, whose powers are coming to him slowly and with time, Tommy’s were immediately activated. He simply hasn’t used them yet outside of having a scarily good aim.

G-Man is actually young by the standards of his species.

Members of G-Man’s species that go into “work” are bound by the laws of the universe to follow the orders of their employers. If given an order, G-Man would not be able to disobey it even if he REALLY didn’t want to.

Only G-Man knows who his employers are, and he cannot tell anybody about them unless they also work for his employers.

hiii, tysm <33 it's the FAQ page that matches my theme, lowlife!! - this are the tag page and about page in case you want them 💕 and since hot girls don't gatekeep, here's is a tutorial in case you know literally zero stuff about codes :) - more tutorials.

remember that you must do it from a computer and you need to have the "custom theme" activated (see this if you don't know how). im gonna do this tutorial in a random sideblog from scratch btw.

disclaimer: don't change anything else but what i mention here, especially if you don't know anything about html and css because, in the codes, any mistake can make the whole code not work. don't touch anything else but what is involved in the design!

as you asked for a tutorial on the FAQ, i will do it specifically for that page, but this applies to the others, as this is how to install pages in general. first, go to the bottom of the "edit theme" until you see "add a page", add one and change "standard layout" to "custom layout". fill in the url with what you want the web address to be (i used "faq" like most people but you can use something else ofc) and you will notice that there's an option that says "show a link to this page" - if you turn that on, this page will be accessible from your homepage and will be next to your askbox, archive, etc. otherwise, it will just show through the link. you can leave it unchecked if you don't want a link to this page next to your ask or archive, but remember to add it manually to your main theme otherwise no one will be able to see it!

now, in another window, go to the installation page and copy all the code and paste it into the tumblr page. with "update preview" you will see how it is displayed without the need to save it (if you're still editing - remember to save it at the end lol).

now you're going to be faced with a situation: tumblr doesn't let you use javascript by default and these pages have javascript. i have two solutions for you. one is to follow this tutorial to ask tumblr for permission to use javascript, and the other is to remove it in case they deny it - which is not usually the case anyway - or take too long, etc. (the only thing that will happen is that you will no longer have the dynamism that the base code has, on these pages not much happens if you remove it, but on others you will need to ask for permission).

to do this, remove the scripts tags: in the second and third picture i pointed out with the mouse which ones they are. JUST remove that and save it to check that the page is visible and everything else is in order.

the page should already be installed and working correctly, now let's make it pretty!!!!! for this part, i highly recommend googling at least the basics of html and css, but i'll explain it from scratch anyway. but you can ask me everything you need hehe.

changing the colours: this is done with the hex codes. if you have a profile picture or header, upload it to this website to see what colours it has if you want them to match.

once you have those colours, you will go to the page and change the hex code for them. the choice of colours is up to you, play with them, change them and see what colour is altered in case you don't understand what is what, but the tags are quite understandable (background, body, accent, etc). remember that if you took out the javascript the "night mode" will not work, so in the next two to "root" (which identify day and night mode) you can change them but leave them the same as each other.

once you have the colour palette, scroll down to the body. there where i pointed out, you can change the shape of the profile picture, the defalut mode if you left the javascript on, whether you want the sidebar to be left or right and whether you want the borders to be solid, or with dashes or dots. as the code itself says, depending on what you want, just change the word that is already there for the change you need.

where it says F.A.Q and "a short description can be pasted here" would be your sidebar (the profile picture changes itself automatically in this one, but in others you have to change it manually with a link) - if you want to match all your pages to your main theme, just paste the description you already have.

you can put a link in your bio, just copy that and change the word "don't" to whatever you want the link to be and change the link.

ask guidelines, as well as within the questions themselves, you can use html tags. <b> and </b> it's bold, <i> and </i> it's italics, <small> and </small> its to make it smaller, or <strike> and </strike> it's to "strike out" the word. remember to put the start tag where you want it to start and the end tag where you want it to end (the end tags are the same but with a /). paragraphs are separated by <p> and </p>, and as the code explains, you can put bullet lists and blockquotes or literally any htlm tag (to change colour, ordered lists, etc). you can also add links (same format as explained in the description)!!!

for the questions and answers, change the first five where it says "question #X goes here" and "answer to question #X goes here", leave the rest the same. if you want more than five questions, at the end you will see something to copy-paste or you can use question #2 through #5 (NOT #1) to copy and paste it under #5 and change the numbers, as well as the questions and answers.

for example, here you should add the number 6 after the #'s and the questions and answers. finally, you can change the sentence that appears at the end of the askbox, you can match it with the one you already have or make it a custom one from the FAQ.

what if the seal the 9th out on can’t be broken but rather limits how much flak is is available and out at such a point it barley supplied tsuna the flame he needed, which could be another angle for why Reborn’s training is so intense for tsuna (besides standard trollborn) as tsuna needs to increase how much flame is out of the seal rather than in

hmm, idk? i know this is something that's often done with the seal in fanon (or was anyway), giving it more consequences than what nono said it was there to do, and bad ones at that, but if i can be honest with you nonny it personally never really did it much for me. like i said in my tags, i think what nono did was make tsuna flames dormant again (because they were clearly active enough already to react to his emotions) and not so easily triggered by his emotions anymore, instead of any kind of actual sealing or limitation. but if it’s not as clear-cut as a seal that’d need to be broken to go away, it rises the question even more, doesn’t it? can it be broken indeed then? ever? and i actually really like the idea of tsuna never really being able to get back his flames to the way they were pre-seal, and needing to adjust to it!

and on that note, in the context where we consider the sealing as canon, that’s how i’ve always explained to myself why tsuna needs the dying will bullets/pills to activate his flames. why he needs them to be triggered by an external factor instead of them just answering to his (dying) will, the way it seemingly works for everyone else. (especially when, clearly, pre-seal, tsuna’s flames had no problem answering to his will.)

(and if we take into account basil also needing to use the pills, it supports the idea that dwb and pills are used to force flames to go active instead of waiting for it to happen naturally, whether or not basil was a civilian too before iemitsu found him. that and how they seem to be used to force flames into a state that’s not naturally attained too, or attained with difficulty, i.e. the hyper dying will mode.)

but that’s as far as i personally like to push it (tsuna needing to work harder to do with his flames what seems to come so easily to everyone else, and to come up with his own ways to make his flames do what he wants because none of the ways that seemingly work for everyone else works for him too). like, if you watch the scene in the anime, nono obviously knew and was confident in what he was doing, and confident in the fact it’d mean nothing bad for tsuna. tho that said, i do think the seal is inevitably bound to have some side effects to some extent, can’t think otherwise when the only other example of a seal we were shown was the zero point breakthrough. (but then again, fresh out of the ice and xanxus had no problem using his flames, had he? and imo it’s much more interesting to make the side-effects be psychological/mental/emotional, rather than about the flames in and off themselves, even if of course, it’s only natural it’d affect them too. and also, of course, xanxus not looking like he had problems using his flames doesn’t necessarily mean he really hadn’t any.)

okay but i really can’t stop thinking about the seal being unbreakable, i’m really vibing with this concept nonny!! it’s like, yeah nono only meant well and didn’t think it’d have any bad consequences, but the road to hell is paved with good intentions and all that jazz, right? so what if he couldn’t undo it? not nono, not reborn, not iemitsu, not anyone? what if they could only ever just make it a little less bad, a little less crushing and suffocating and shackled around tsuna’s flames? what if they could only help crack the seal to let some of his flames slip through, but never break it fully?

tsuna’s resentment, bitterness, anger, grief, pain, what do they do with all of it then? what do tsuna does with all of it? especially knowing what type of life he went on to have post-seal, because i’m sure tsuna could have used the help of his flames during his years of harsh bullying. to the point it destroyed any kind of self-esteem in him entirely. and nono meant to give him a peaceful and normal civilian life by sealing his flames, but it only ended up meaning pain for tsuna he could have avoided if nono left his flames alone. and then the cherry on top of this tragedy is that years later? not only they need tsuna to leave his civilian life behind, but have to force his hand to every step of the way because tsuna wants none of this.

Luka has been, quite frankly, working his ass off like he never has before.

Well, maybe that’s not entirely true. He remembers at least sort of working this hard to study for the bac, even if by most standards he nearly passed by the skin of his teeth. And he remembers at least sort of working this hard to find a paying job once he could actually have a job. But those ventures were for other people. To make a school district look good. To put food on the table even when he did n’t much feel like eating himself. This… he might even say this is the first time he’s worked so hard for himself, taken every bull he could find by the horns and steered it toward this club Bubbles has been hyping up, instead of figuring out where the things he loved decided to take him.

…Okay, and maybe he’s been doing some of this with Marinette in mind. But it isn’t entirely because of her, and he’d be dead and buried before he’d admit that Juleka’s right about this.

But what’s so bad about having a reason to work so hard? What’s wrong with calling the band together to practice when they’d been so lax about performances before? And what’s so bad about having a face to focus on in his imaginary audience whenever he closes his eyes? Or about having their setlist running like ticker tape in his head whenever he has a quiet moment in between deliveries? Or about splitting his attention between his messages to Bubbles and the tireless search for that perfect shade of blue music in the middle of the night?

Isn’t this what drives art? A color, a smile, a touch of the hand? Doesn’t this stuff launch ships and pen poetry? Isn’t it the little things, the things that are inconsequential to almost everyone else, that makes a painting into a masterpiece, or a song into a symphony?

Juleka says it once at the end of practice. Mostly with a jerk of her thumb and the hollow drawl of, “Get a load of this guy.”

Luka barely hears it, mostly because he’s crossed the room to study a heap of sheet music and rearrange it for what feels like the third time this hour. But he has enough spare energy, between writing and erasing and rewriting, to raise a middle finger behind him.

“Oh, come on,” Rose laughs, stepping back from the microphone; in seconds, he can feel her looming over him, studying with him. He doesn’t mind it, or how she rests her chin on his head, simply because they’ve known each other so long. “You just wanna get it right for our big break, right?”

Luka’s gotten a lot of things right; it’s easy to do when he keeps the bar for “right” on the ground nine times out of ten. He doesn’t want to get it right. He wants to get it perfect. And, as it turns out, the tenth time is the most finicky son of a bitch he’s ever dealt with. Which is saying something, when he’s been at the mercy of hungry customers more times than he can count.

“We’ll get it,” Rose encourages him with a friendly kiss to the top of his head. Her voice sounds tired. Maybe even worn. “But it’s not gonna go anywhere if you leave it alone for a while. I promise. Come on, let’s give it a rest.”

After a moment, he sighs, rights his papers, and rests his forehead on the keyboard he’s had to use as a makeshift desk. It makes the most distressing mix of notes in protest, but he hardly winces; it’s not like he’s ever been able to play it properly, anyway. “Fine,” he relents. “I’ll make you some tea and meet you upstairs.”

A shift in the air tells him neither Rose nor Juleka believes him. In the end, Juleka says, “Fine,” and Rose unravels from him, and their footsteps fade up the stairs.

With a sigh, Luka lifts his head from the piano, sure that the keys must have left some kind of mark, and finds Ivan still there, seated half-uncomfortably behind the drum set and twirling one of the sticks in his fingers.

“Juleka gave me The Look,” is all Ivan says, but it’s enough of an explanation. They’ve all been on the business end of The Look before. Even Rose, and maybe Luka more than most. He can see it in his head from the words alone.

“I get it, I get it,” Luka says, and he sets to work putting the kettle on and fishing out a couple of teabags and mismatched mugs from the cupboard. “You want a soda? Last one before we go grocery shopping—”

Ivan shakes his head. “You have it.”

Luka tosses him a water bottle instead, impressed by how he downs half of it in one go, dismissing his apology when he wipes his mouth with the back of his hand. The kettle’s still going. They’ve got time to kill.

“She… kinda has a point,” Ivan mumbles after more than a beat of silence, like he’s uncertain about being too honest. Luka’s always thought he had nothing to worry about—Ivan’s much more tender than first glances would have others believe, and maybe tiptoes more than he should to fight those first glances. But he’s also had more than his fair share of overthinking the right words to say when music doesn’t suffice, and of regretting the words no matter how he ends up stringing them together, so he can’t really blame him.

Luka decides to bite. “What d’you mean?”

“I dunno,” Ivan says, which usually means that he does know but is looking for the right way to cushion his words. “It does kinda feel like you’ve gone into turbo mode about this whole gig. But like, Luka-Couffaine-Style Turbo Mode.”

“Is that better or worse than the average?”

“Well… it’s definitely different. It’s like you tune everything out and go… I guess, somewhere inside yourself that the rest of us can’t see.” Ivan shrugs. “I guess maybe she’s worried that it’s so nice in there that you won’t come back out.”

Luka smiles grimly at the stovetop. “You’re not gonna tell me there’s no I in ‘band,’ are you?”

Ivan laughs and takes another swig. “Nah, that sounds like something a guidance counselor would say. More like… it’s okay to come out sometimes.”

Luka bites his tongue and resists the urge to joke that he already does it every time he meets someone new. Instead, he busies himself with turning off the kettle and making the tea. “Hey, uh… you don’t mind if I ask you something weird i do you?”

“I’m already scared,” Ivan jokes, “but go ahead.”

Luka pauses, tea bag in hand. “How did… you and Mylène get together?”

When he turns, it’s hard to say just how Ivan’s expression’s shifted, but he knows it has. Reminiscing, maybe? Or is that... cringing? Or—for better or worse—understanding? “I, uh, wrote her a song. It… didn’t exactly go well.”

“What d’you mean, it didn’t go well? You’re dating, aren’t you?”

“Well, yeah, but. “Ivan shrugs. “It’s not like we just magically came together or anything. There were hiccups, I guess. You know?”

Luka knew hiccups better than the back of his hand. “So… what happened?”

Ivan tells him everything. How he liked Mylène and how sometimes it felt like everyone knew it but her. Or how maybe she knew after all, but didn’t want to, now maybe she even pretended she didn’t to let him down easy. How he buzzed from head to toe just sitting next to her in class but barely talked to her because he didn’t feel like he had the right to. The nights he stayed up thinking about it, wildly swinging back and forth between what if she doesn’t? and but God, what if she does? How he was teased and goaded by his classmates into finally gathering up the courage to confess to her, and humiliating them both with that stupid, loud song. And how, at the end of the day, all she needed to do was read the lyrics.

“It didn’t have to be perfect,” Ivan tells him. “It just had to be good.”

Luka smiles to himself at the end of it all, and feels his stomach turn, and wonders in the silence if all Marinette needs to do is hear the notes.

“Is it?” Ivan asks. “A girl? The one you’ve been posting about?”

Luka doesn’t say anything. He only takes the tray of drinks, and gives a little shrug, and nods toward the stairs. He gets the feeling Ivan would know without words anyway.

Cause I’m in. In fact, I’ve never been more “in” in my life.

hm well just basic stuff like “being in a good mood” lol or “being hyped up by friends” or “having reason to be particularly excited about something” which is all like, factors that Contribute Energy......learning about stuff / trying something and discovering like oh i’m Into this thing, or that for whatever reason something turns out to be more within reach / doable than i might’ve thought, like, hey i wanna get on this maybe.......~creatively~ it’s great to like, see other ppl’s art, and while i’ve sure been Inspired by professional artists, overall i’m more like, influenced and motivated by seeing the styles / specific works of Online Randos like me.......i also Draw to create [self-indulgent (usually fairly) niche fanart which is also probably gay and is all the time of characters i like] so like, the Stuff I Wanna Make Fanart Of (which has Whatever characters i specifically would like to draw lol) is sure directly Inspiring in that way. i’d say i never had that experience of like, ppl being kids and seeing some [distributed work in a certain art medium] like oh i want to make my own [distributed work in a certain art medium] as in like, i wanna publish a book, i wanna make movies, etc, but i guess i Did b/c i was like elementary school age in the early-to-mid 00s and experienced some instances of online fanart like :o :o wow damn ppl can do that?? just be a rando drawing fanart and sharing it w/ other people online???? and today i am living that dream, so good for me lol. and also i’d like to shoutout marge simpson anime, which is a particular piece of Online Art (technically fanart even lol) which was like, unusually Motivating as a single work of art lol, i made a notes app fanart like immediately and then a way more “painterly” piece of fanart that was v directly inspired by it lol.......and i was sure Drawing It Up last last winter when bmc 3.0 was impending / happening, b/c i got into like Just in the dec before, so that was Fresh, and then bam the Content is happening concurrently and as soon as we even just learned that jeremy has glasses i immediately spent like honestly 25 consecutive hours making fanart for that exact Inspiration. we didn’t even know abt the hello kitty shoes yet!!! and naturally im not out here for stats or clout but it is Inspiring when ppl enjoy the stuff i make and let me know one way or another. tbh it’s kind of an arduous process lmao like. first of all i am Bad about initiating shit, and a lot of times will like, be wary of Directly Interacting with people for a while b/c i am also Bad At not being too passive / unwilling to assert anything so like, if someone’s regularly interacting with me but i’m not into it / Eventually Realize i’m not into it, it’s that thing again where my main strat is [v gradually sidle away] lol and just find it difficult to extricate myself from interactions / relationships and so that plays into me really feeling like i have to have some real confidence that i’d get on with / vibe with someone Before i start significantly interacting with / getting involved with them which....is also difficult natch lol like. can’t rly get a great feel for what someone’s like w/o talking to them.......but then if i Distance myself at all at any point will that be taken as rejection or whatever.......and then anyways say i Am talking to someone, then it’s like, also i’m just not fantastic at casual conversation always and that stage where you don’t know someone too well and talking is mostly a Polite Ritual and it’s like oh god don’t mess up, respond Normally lmaoo......i am nervous. and i also have a tendency to just naturally try to make an interaction go smoothly than immediately prioritize / feel comfortable busting out My Personality lmao.....so then even if ppl are responding well enough it’s like ah jeez i know we’re all performing always but have i shown them What I’m Actually Like to any significant degree, am i just masking it up / mirroring the crap out of how they talk?? and also it then takes me quite a while to put together “if someone keeps talking to you / choosing to interact with you for like, weeks, it probably means they want to / are interested in doing so” lol.........and then i’ll take ages more of trying to consciously Be More Myself without *also* feeling like this is too much of an act lol, and gradually picking up like oh they’re still not like, annoyed or disinterested or something..............what i am trying to say is it sure takes a minute lol

Ships: I don't really engage with stuff in a shippy way anymore... most of the time when I watched stuff recently that invites that kind of engagement (e.g. RWBY... feel free to judge) I've been happy enough with the canon ships. If I have an opinion on a ship, it's probably just that I dislike a het ship. I can’t think of any particularly controversial ships... Disco Elysium had a powerful gay undercurrent but it could have been more open about it maybe?

At the same time, it's often hard to deny that a relationship is the focus of the work... NieR: Automata lets you read 2B and 9S in a few ways (though in any reading, the fact that 9S wants to '****' 2B is quite explicit! and there's a lot of sexualised imagery around killing on both sides) but spends a lot more narrative attention on their relationship dynamic than, say, the unreciprocated crushes of 6O and 21O on 2B and 9S. If you wanted to write 2B/6O (and many fans do! it's the second most popular ship after 2B/9S or 2B&9S by AO3 stats) you have to do a lot more work to fill in 2B's side of things.

Nowadays, I guess my interest would be from the writer's side of the equation... how do you convincingly 'sell' a relationship, and how can it go awry? You can see the cases where it goes wrong: in AtlA, I don't think the writers anticipated that arguing about Kataang vs. Zutara would be a major focus of fan activity. But if they intended for Kataang to be 'obvious', they didn't quite get it right, insofar as a lot of people started to believe Katara and Zuko would have a more interesting dynamic or something. (They faced the same problem, albeit even worse, with Makorra in LoK, and this time backed off from their original idea and committed to a fan favourite ship in Korrasami.)

So does that suggest that going into a longform project intending to portray a specific relationship (romantic or otherwise) between two characters is a mistake, and you should wait and see what arises 'organically' over the course of the writing project?

You could make this argument, but I don't think it can really work: you have to have some intent when you begin writing, even if you're flexible to unforeseen ideas. You can’t wait until you find an unintentional dynamic to portray two characters in a relationship. (I guess that’s what revisions and editing is for, to go back and retool towards something that works in the first pass?)

[Of course, 'which ship will be endgame' is a limiting frame... it treats 'getting together' as the only interesting part of the relationship, assumes relationships are for life, and especially seems to assume that nothing interesting will happen outside the events of the story. As Chris Breault criticised the ending of Disco Elysium, the convention is to resolve all the strangeness and suggest a return to 'a status quo too boring to depict' (something I don't think is entirely fair of Disco Elysium, but very often the standard way for fiction to end). Once we've worked out who's 'endgame', what else is there to say? Surely a lot, but the default mode of fiction is to stop there!]

Anyway, looking at my own stories, I feel like I often haven't given enough room to really flesh out relationships. I'm all too often pushing on to the next development that upends everything, the next revelation or dramatic change of circumstance, and not spending enough time in quiet moments and slow burn which make the dramatic stuff and changes of relationship satisfying and engaging.

Last song: I believe I was listening to the NieR soundtrack with a housemate last night. Before that, probably something weebish or post-rock suggested by Youtube’s algorithm. I struggle a lot to talk about music, since everything feels like it's laden with great, opaque significance. Having really shallow 'I just listen to videogame soundtracks' tastes has been kind of a shield, because I have this weird paranoid fear that I'll say something I don't mean to say by venturing an uninformed opinion on songs. I'm grateful that people like @lyravelocity and @baeddel will put up with that and nevertheless recommend me stuff to fill this huge gap in my cultural knowledge!

Last movie: If it counts as a movie (given it's split into 3), most likely Psycho-Pass 3: First Inspector. I think later Psycho-Pass loses something that the earlier parts had... they've established this quite interesting metaphor in the Sybil System and this medicalised model of extremely lethal policing, and then they also went some interesting places in the movies with the post-colonial Fanon-quoting mercenaries and all that, but they mostly seem to be back to covering the same ground now. The new protagonists introduced in Season 3 aren't half as compelling as Tsunemori Akane, and I don't like the way they're rendering the CG backgrounds now. Bluh bluh, grumble grumble.

Before that, the last film I watched was probably PROMARE by Studio Trigger. This movie sure is a spectacle. The plot takes so many turns that I just kind of gave in on predicting what would happen and enjoyed the pretty colours at some point. When I've filled in the gaps, I want to do a post reviewing everything Studio Trigger... though they still haven't done anything that reaches the level of Kill la Kill imo.

Reading: In non-fiction, Endnotes 5. It's a pleasure to have Endnotes to read again... this new volume, with its more introspective focus, is addressing a bunch of questions I've been struggling with. I hope to write something in response when I finish reading it. I'm also (re)reading Chuang for edwad's reading group though that's not gotten very far.

In fiction, I've been reading a lot of Drag-on Dragoon side stories for this documentation project I kind of obsessively threw myself into during a period of being off my meds.

Tagging more people: I hesitate to pass these things on, so consider this an open invitation.

In my current project, VECTOR, I get CERULEAN and CORAL together in the very first chapter, because it was originally intended as nothing more than a one-shot exploration of a scene that had been kicking around in my head. Later I get CERULEAN and CHIASMUS together, after we've had a bit longer to get to know them so hopefully that works a bit better... nobody's complained to me, but I worry a lot that I haven't done enough to make these relationships interesting and believable, and the more characters who join the narrative, the harder it gets to give everyone enough screen time.

There's a problem where like, when things are good, we tend to feel there's not a lot interesting to write about. We spend long enough to establish an idyll, and then blow it up.

For example, there's a bit in Jemisin's The Fifth Season where her protagonist goes and lives on an island shagging two hot guys (not really my thing as a lesbian but genuine passion shows through from Jemisin's authorial voice) and raising her kid; it mostly gets skipped over to cut to the point where the island gets attacked and she loses it all. Or in Baru Cormorant, we get the briefest of glimpses of life on Taranoke before the empire shows up and starts imposing their order and eugenic programs and so on. Even though some vague notion of 'saving' the island motivates her throughout the plot, we barely get to see what it is she's trying to save. Of course, that's appropriate to her character... Likewise when she finally gets with Tain Hu, their only night together happens off camera. Though with Baru/Tain Hu we have an entire book worth of semi-unreliably-narrated interactions so when they do get together it's like, yes, finally!

Still, I don't even have any of those scenes? Chapter 2, maybe, but I was still doing a lot of establishing there... something to take note of, for my next project if not this one I guess. Or to go back and flesh out if I can find the energy to edit this in a deliberate and systematic way.

Oh ladder is bad bad bad. Right not their first rodeo: Hamid and Zolf are talking out the plan. Zolf will scout? *scouts* *elevator ain’t moving* *reports* Regarding the text level of the ensuing conversation: Everyone is going to be tied together. No falling allowed. Hamid makes a case for Lightest First, Zolf was thinking Heaviest First. They go with lightest first. Eh I'm no hiker so not going to spend to much brain space on working out which order makes sense. Especially since none of them are allowed to fall, Alex. Subtext: Hamid sounds a little nervous about it but is in leader mode, not presenting an idea to his boss mode. Zolf sounds unsure how to take that level of the conversation but always did take Hamid's ideas seriously; even if only seriously enough to argue about rather than dismiss out of hand. As they discuss it Hamid sounds a bit more confident as Zolf takes it well. Zolf sounds frustrated but I think it's only on the level he explicitly said: this is going to suck and he would rather do it quickly, than have time for worry to really set in. I swear if they have Azu fall on someone like Bertie fell on Sasha; the way the last season of scripted shows do call backs to fan favorite episodes I'll never trust the dice are unweighted again. Eep, fatigue mechanics are starting now Yes having typing as an excuse to pause as they hit the bit we've been worrying about is nice. I don't want anyone to slip but I kinda need Zolf as Iron Man saving someone fan art. Ha Bryn just figured out they can work out how much time has passed by how often Zolf has to reactivate his boots. He clearly knows how much Ben will appreciate being used to add to the admin when he points this out. Oh this is going to be Planes Walking all over again, rolls every few seconds. So what’s the point of making it a separate selectable option at all? Why bother wrapping your content in this extra level of fluff?

There is a “Classic Editor” block, which combines the power of many of the others (Header, Paragraph, Shortcode, List, HTML…), plus all the menu options for each, plus menu options you can’t get anywhere else! (Say, the Special Character button, for when you just gotta have a quick ∑.)

Some of the image/media blocks look more promising. They make it easier to do embeds or auto-align images into galleries. Things that were possible in the Classic HTML editor, but genuinely less intuitive.

I thought this might offer a new way to arrange the BICP archive page, but no dice. You can link gallery images to predetermined URLs (like the media page for that specific image), but not custom URLs (so I can’t link a chapter cover to the actual start of the chapter).

You can add captions, but they appear superimposed over the image — I can’t find any way to make them appear underneath instead.

…it came out off-center, and there’s a whole extra row of space between the two widgets that I don’t want there. (And I had to edit the HTML anyway, to add a <div clear=”left”> before the Gallery, otherwise it came out all kinds of wrong.)

Bonus headache: as-is, if I decide I want to insert a new thing in the middle of the chart for some reason, it’s easy. All the code is together; I just paste the new stuff in the middle. With Gutenberg blocks, I would have to individually redo every row of every block.

Oh, and a couple of general complaints:

When adding tags to a post, the “Choose from your most used tags” option is gone! You’ve gotta either have your whole list memorized, or look it up separately every time, or do your best to guess what relevant tags you’ve used before.

I don’t see an automatic wordcount, either. That used to show up at the very bottom of the editing window. No more.

And with the Classic Editor, if you switch to HTML mode, you get straightforward HTML that can be easily copy-and-pasted to other sites. Say, Dreamwidth, or the AO3, or a different WordPress blog. Well, I did some c&p out of Gutenberg’s HTML mode the other day, and it completely wrecked the spacing.

Good news, though! So far, Gutenberg only applies to regular blog posts. The interfaces I use to queue new comics (in Comic Easel for BICP, and in Webcomic 5 for Leif & Thorn) are unaffected, and none of my customizations are broken.

There’s a whole Classic Editor plugin that you can use to override Gutenberg even for standard blogging. I’m not going to go that far — there are a couple of useful things here. Like this purely aesthetic gallery.

And there may be other Gutenberg features I end up liking. Or some of those might be added in future updates. Either way, the best way to find out about them is to be an active user.

But I’m probably gonna use Classic Editor blocks for just about all my text content, and do a lot of sighing when it gets weird on me anyway.

I swear to Azar, if that reply came out the way it did because I read GtN and HtN four times in a row.......

(I’m about to overanalyze three paragraphs of my impromptu totally-just-for-fun writing.)

The sentence structure. I do a thing where, whenever I read a book that Really Emotionally Impacts Me, I tend to “adopt” some of the same syntax as the book in my own writings. TM’s style, at least in TLT, is very sensory-descriptive, which my writing can also be, but TM’s tends to have more formulaic syntax than I usually use. And that reply, which is the first New Thing I’ve written since reading those books (which is painful to realize because Holy Hell How Long Has My Muse Been Dead), it contains an awful lot of sentences beginning with “She”.

Specifically, I used a lot of syntax that was like, “She [verb] [object] [detail].” Kind of more standard English than I usually use? Like, I generally stick to active voice too, but usually my sentence structure varies more than that...

And also the allusions to Dove’s past, without detailing Specific Examples? Dove wanted to focus on the other character’s statement rather than reminisce (she often tries to avoid thinking about painful things in her past, that’s just Default Dove Mode). But TM does a lot of “[x] happened” without saying “and it happened Exactly Like This.” Vague references to the general Vibes^tm of the past.

And then Hard-Hitting Dialogue without much preamble, and like... Dove kinda Got Deep. (Which, again, is a staple trait of Dove’s Dialogue. She’s the kind of person who doesn’t talk much, but generally has either a lot of insight or a lot of emotion in what she DOES say.) But it compares to TLT in the way that it was Heavy Thought Stuff in a Seemingly Innocuous Moment.

(It wasn’t a literary reference, though. Or a meme. ;P )

To be fair, it’s definitely not a carbon copy. TM definitely uses more dialogue tags than I used in that reply. A Big Thing about my writing is that I describe voices in Words Besides Verbs pretty often, because “she muttered” doesn’t have the same Heft nor Expressiveness to me as “her voice was breathy, almost too weak to hear”. (Unless I’m going for Quick Intense Rhythm, in which case “she muttered” suits just fine. But statistically, I Describe Voices with Full Phrases a LOT. And I like it that way so don’t come at me about ~trimming the fat~ or whatever.)

But anyways, it was mostly the heavy use of “She [did x]” format and the part that was like, simply, briefly, “She had seen enough endings to last a lifetime. A thousand lifetimes.” That felt kinda Dark and Deep and Emotional in a TLT kinda way.

(Also, it was Hidden Lore because when Trigon destroyed Azarath and killed its inhabitants, which were said in the comics to number “a thousand”, it was alluding to the fact that she’d seen/felt A Thousand Lifetimes Ending. Dove didn’t dwell on it and so I didn’t narrate it, but I’m proud of Slipping That In There.)

This is a little meta series, mostly for my own entertainment.  Here’s the thing: I love s3 of Skam and I love Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet, and I thought to myself ‘hey, here’s a chance to talk about both things at the same time’ and so here I am.  Writing metas on every clip of s3 just so I can overanalyze a movie I love too.  I’m not sure how often I’ll be getting them out, but it’ll be as often as I can.  Sadly, with full-time work and fic writing as well it may not be as often as I’d like, but the intention is for at least 2-3 per week.  I’ll tag it as ‘my s3 meta series stuff’ so people can avoid it if they want to. Anyway, without further ado, here’s our first clip:

My thoughts/analysis: This was my first introduction to Isak in the show as I came in just after s3 had finished and that was the season it was easiest to find links for at the time.  I had seen gifsets on tumblr of him from later scenes but I’d never seen the previous seasons and so the Isak we meet here was a bit of a shock to me.  I had expected a fluffy marshmallow of a boy but what I got was a hardened guy who was a bit of a brat (bless Even, honestly, and what changes he inspired in Isak).  So let’s look at what’s going on in more detail, shall we?  We open with a montage of other people all gathered together, often dancing and/or drinking and mostly looking happy and connected, with the exception of Vilde of course, who looks ill at ease and like she doesn’t want to be there.  She’s an interesting choice here, and the conspiracy theorist in me wants to read ‘also insecure in her sexuality’ into this whole bit, particularly in relation to Eva.  But, that way lies sadness so I’ll leave it be. Scattered in amongst this montage we have a lot of references to homosexuality, some good, some bad.  It sets the tone, of course, for Isak’s story where he fears the whole business of coming out and accepting himself will go badly and so he works very hard to hide it and protect himself.  Interestingly, these are all gone before we see Isak himself in the clip.  They are deliberately inserted in between images of supposedly heterosexual teens enjoying themselves.  I feel like this could be a suggestion that it’s these people Isak is worried about, rather than himself.  I think it’s pretty clear by now from what we’ve seen in other seasons that he knows he’s gay (or at least not straight), and so his journey isn’t one of self discovery so much as it is of self-acceptance.  The biggest hurdle Isak faces is actually his fear that he won’t fit in anymore and the start of this clip really highlights this.

Our introduction to Isak for the season is him taking a hit with his friends in a bathtub.  In some ways, this is lovely for him.  He is surrounded by a small but tight group of friends, distanced from the throng in the rest of the house and enjoying some fairly typical teen rebellious behavior.  On the other hand, they are isolated from the rest of the party and his friends are far more interested in talking about girls than Isak himself is.  His comment is about what he’s taken; theirs are about how hot some girls are.  Isak immediately causes controversy among his friends by declaring all the girls ‘not fuckable’ and being picky.  To his friends, this seems to be a sign of his standards and they don’t really push him on it, though he is very quick to react to ‘there must be one girl’ and choosing one to say.  I suspect he panics a little here: oh shit, if I don’t have one will they guess?  Um .... that one who looks like Natalie Portman.  It’s fairly obvious as a symbol that he says the only hot girl is one who looks like a little boy.  The main intention here, of course, is to highlight that ‘she’s cute if you’re turned on by 13 year old boys’ is somewhat ironic given that Isak is in fact turned on by boys, though hopefully not 13 year old ones. But clearly, it also works as a device in-text for Isak to show off his superior ‘game’ (which the guys don’t really believe he has at this point) and allow him to gloat a little later in the season, and to start his strange relationship with Emma, into which he is pressured by the guys.  The little sideshow at the back where the boys all point Emma out and push Isak into going after her is what sets the course of that whole plot.  

Other people have mentioned the slight drop in Isak’s facade just before he goes after Emma, but it’s important to note again.  He is not happy to be doing this and it really is a play for his friends, and probably the girls as well and Isak himself is not happy, despite the show he puts on for those other people in the room.  It’s interesting that Isak allows his facade to drop, almost completely, when it’s just him and Emma.  He tries for a little while to keep going, but when things look like they might turn sexual he backs right away.  It’s likely, then, that Isak is most concerned with how Jonas and his friends see him.  He cares about Emma a little, but when it comes right down to it, he’d rather she think he’s a bit weird than go through with sexual activity he’s not interested in.  He’s not interested in cultivating this relationship beyond what was needed for Jonas and the boys to see him a certain way.  With them out of the picture, the facade is less important and Emma herself doesn’t matter to him in terms of what she might think.  When he’s alone is the most heartbreaking.  This is where we see through his mask and it’s horrible to watch.  He feels deeply unhappy, extremely lonely, probably feels trapped in this ‘fake’ life he’s been building for so long.  This is the culmination of his reactions to the constant barrage of comments he was getting through s1 and 2 and it’s hard to watch.  In order to not be denigrated as ‘gay’ (from people who clearly think it marks you as wrong somehow right down to the casual ‘are you gay?’ type comments from friends), Isak has carefully built this face for himself that makes him desperately unhappy but allows him to fit in.

Obviously, in this clip we also get the weed stashing subplot that gets Isak to kosegruppa and sets off his friendship with Sana.  It’s uneasy and she’s very suspicious and angry at him, all of which is in keeping with the tone of the clip: Isak is cultivating a careful mask for himself but there are cracks starting to show.  Sana is first, of many, to start calling Isak out and see past his exterior, and the seeds of that are sown here.  We also see Isak in defensive mode, managing to lie well enough to the police that he is able to get out of there.  He’s not proactively a good manipulator in that he doesn’t plan out elaborate things in advance, but he is very good at thinking on his feet and saying and doing what he needs to in the moment to get what he needs out of a situation.  He does it with Emma and he does it with the police officer.  He’s very practised at it.

Romeo and Juliet connections for clip: As far as I know, there are none in this clip.  Obviously, much like Romeo, Isak has a good, rowdy group of boys around him and there’s banter and they give each other shit while hanging out.  But that’s true of pretty much every piece of teen media ever (and it’s nice that the same was true for Shakespeare, at least in the way Baz Luhrmann did it).  So reluctantly, I am going to concede that this movie doesn’t really have a connection with this clip.  This will change and I am so excited about that!!

Associated extras: A rather cute instagram video with Isak and Jonas basically just being stupid on a bike.  I guess this is there to remind us that they are, and always have been, good bros and have a lot of fun together.  And also that the run-in with the police wasn’t particularly dampening on their spirits.

Overall impressions: This is a very good introduction to Isak’s issues.  Those who have seen s1 and 2 will know that there is a hint that he might be gay, and so his reactions to certain words and ideas hits home.  Those who haven’t seen these seasons get enough in this clip to suggest what his issue is and to get a good sense of the mask he’s wearing.  The important moment is when he lets it slip, then, because it tells every type of viewer what he is going through even if they can’t be sure why.  We’re reintroduced to most of the other characters who reappear this season and we get to know Mahdi and Magnus a little here.  Overall, I think it’s a good reintroduction to Isak and the gang and a good solid start to some of the storylines that will flow through the season.  Isak’s alienation in various ways is particularly highlighted (from the party, from his friends, from living a ‘real’ life) and so we are all primed to want this to change.  He comes across as a brat, but as one who’s deeply conflicted, unhappy and alone despite the good friendships he is surrounded by.
