Batfam Ages:
Okay, there is no such thing as an exact science when determining the ages of the Batfam, but the easiest thing you can do is work of the concrete ages that you /do/ know, and make them fit with canon events to the best of your ability. Now, canon changes all the timeāwhich definitely makes this a challenge, but Iām going to just explain my process for determining their ages and you can disagree if youād like, or you can use this to write fic like I do where ages are semi important,
Letās begin. Iām going to give you the arbitrary number of 15, this will be important later.
Dick Grayson:
Depending on the canon, Dick is 8, 10, 12, or 15 when his parents die. All of these numbers will have problems depending on which you pick, but I go for the safe bet of 10 years old. Why? Well, a little known fact is that Dick ends up in juvie after his parents die, and heās not immediately taken in by Batman. Thus, it takes a little while longer for him to become Robin, which doesnāt immediately happen after he becomes Bruceās ward anyway, because Batman doesnāt immediately go and spill the beans. Thus, Dick ends up in Bruceās car at around ten or eleven, but doesnāt become Robin until heās 12.
Now Dick is Robin up until heās about 18, when Bruce takes Robin from Dick because itās too dangerous and Dick refuses to quit. Dick joins up with the teen titans full time, and heās still Robin for a little while longer until we get Nightwing, aka Discowing, for the very first time at age 19. Simultaneously, while this is happening, a little kid is stealing the Batmobileās tires.
Jason Todd:
Our beloved street rat Robin, Jason Todd, swings a tire iron at Batman and then gets taken out for fast food. Itās great, itās cute, it doesnāt immediately lead to his adoption though, either. No, instead Jason ends up in an orphanage that is trafficking children. Bruce shows up one day to check up on Jason, and is made aware of this by his soon to be first adopted son (yeah, you heard me, Dick isnāt adopted yet). They take down the trafficking ring, and Bruce adopts Jason. Jason then becomes Robin at age 13.
Unfortunately for our boy, he was widely disliked by comic fans across North America, DC did a little telephone poll, and by a few hundred votes, DC changed comic history forever by killing off a high profile character what seems like /permanently/ for the first time ever. No resurrections this time. (Hah, right!). Which is to say, Jason Todd has the second shortest run as Robin at just two years, dying at age 15.
Tim Drake:
So then we get Robin numero 3. Tim Drake sees Batman getting darker and more violent and goes yāknow, someone should do something about that. He tries talking to Nightwing, but heās in a bad place with Bruce after learning Jason died via a Newspaper (yeah, Bruce sucks for that one), and tells Tim he wonāt be going back to Robin. Thus, lil Timmy Drake gets an idea in his head. He looks himself in the mirror and goes, I can fix him, and then, Tim Drake becomes Robin at age 12.
Tim Drake has one of the longest runs as Robin, with only a mild interruption from a lil blond Bat.
Stephanie Brown:
Stephanie Brown starts off as the vigilante Spoiler, whose whole purpose in life is to spoil the plans of her C-list villain dad, Cluemaster. She meets Robin (Tim), hits him in the face with a brick, and then ends up dating him. Unlike most characters who appear a few times and never come back, Stephanie manages to stick around. She gets pregnant at age 15 (itās not Timās, and no she did not cheat, this happened priorly), she gives birth, the baby is put up for adoption, and she becomes Robin after Timās dad, Jack Drake, finds out Tim is Robin and bans him from it. Tim is forced to quit and Stephanie picks up the mantle. Sheās clocks in the shortest run as Robin, working with Batman for about two months before Bruce forces her to stop. Tim picks up the mantle again, and Steph goes back to being Spoilerāonly to get killed by Black Mask, making her the second āRobinā to die. DC does retcon her death, and we later learn she was only badly beaten and sent off to live in a foreign country before she makes her return.
Jason Todd, Again:
While all this is going on, stuff is happening behind the scenes. Namely, Jason coming back to life. A common misconception here however is how long Jason was actually dead. While I wouldnāt be able to find the panels to confirm it, the true number is a āshortā 6 months. Yep, while years passed in the real world, possibly decades, actually, Jason was dead all of 6 months. According to the books, he undigs himself from his grave six feet under (because Superboy punched through the multiverse or something?) and ends up wondering around Gotham as a mindless little zombie. Conveniently, Talia al Ghul stumbles upon her belovedās lost little bird, and she decides to take him home and train him. Heās with them for a bit, gets dunked into a Lazarus pit, comes back very very angry, is shipped off to the all caste for a bit, and upon his return to the al Ghuls, is informed heās been replaced by little Timmy Drake.
Jason makes his whole plan, and decides to make a splash by returning to Gotham wearing an old moniker of the Jokerās and taking over Gothamās underworld. He beheads a few criminals, tries to kill Tim, tries to get Bruce to kill the Joker, and doesnāt really have success in those latter two objectives. That puts Jason at age 19, roughly. We donāt really know how to count the months he was dead.
Damian Wayne:
Shortly after Jasonās unmasking as the Red Hood, Damian Wayne turns 10 years old and beats his mother, Talia al Ghul, in combat. His prize is to be taken to his father and given to him for training. We know definitively that Damian is 10 thanks to this we can measure out the age gaps between the others and get their ages at this point in time. Dick at age 19 became Nightwing, while Jason is made Robin at age 13, so they have a six year age gap. Jason dying 2 years later at age 15 leads to Tim becoming Robin at age 12, they have a 3 year age gap. Tim is Robin for 3 years before Jason comes back and Damian trails after him a few months behind, putting Tim at around 16/17 while Damian is 10. I tend towards 16 instead of 17 because DC stopped aging Tim for a while, so it just makes more sense to pick the lower number. Thus, when Damian is 10, Tim is 16 as is Steph, Jason is 19, and Dick is 25.
Thanks to Damian being quite young, DC has kept an active track of how and when they age him. We know Damian is only with Bruce a few short months before he disappears into the time stream and Dick makes him Robin, and we also know that Damianās 11th birthday is celebrated after Bruce is reinstated to the proper time. However, DC follows this up by killing Damian and making him the third Robin to die, the second to do so in the suit itself, and heās dead for a significant number of months. In this time, Dick also diesāas in his heart is stopped by Lex Luthor for a few seconds, and then restarted, after his identity is revealed on live TV. Bruce decides to let the world believe Nightwing died and stayed dead, and Dick is sent off to Spyral to do secret spy stuff for Bruce. There is an issue around here in the āGraysonā run that claims Dick is twenty-one years old, which is ENTIRELY incompatible with the time line I just painstakingly established, and I go ahead and outright dismiss it because it clearly doesnāt work with a majority of canon. While Dick is with Spyral, Damian is brought back to life, and he goes on a year of redemption (which doesnāt actually last a whole year, but I digress). He and Dick meet again, and we move into Rebirth somewhere around here with the conclusion of Spyral and Batman and Robin Eternal.
General Events:
Damian turns 12 presumably sometime during rebirth, although not specified, I do believe Truth and Justice issue #6 to be his 12th or 13th birthday, but I lean towards 12 because of the costumes everyone wears in the issue. Steph is spoiler, Cass is Orphan, Tim is Red Robin, Red Hood has yet to don his solo Outlaw uniform, and Barbara is Batgirl.
I canāt name a specific issue for Damianās 13th birthday, but itās canonical that Damian turned 14 in his solo Robin series, Robin (2021) while he was off finding himself before the Lazarus Tournament, and since then, thereās been the Shadow War, Batman Vs Robin, Dark Crisis event somewhere around there, the Lazarus Planet event, Gotham War, DC Knight Terrors, and Beast World event, which catches us up to the modern day world.
Since Damian hasnāt yet turned 15 despite ALL of that going on, and is still for now at least, 14, that means Tim and Steph are 20, Jason is 23, and Dick is 29.
I know I mentioned Cass and Babs, and I would love to give you a proper age for them but I donāt know where to place them in DC canon like I do the others, however people do commonly place Cass roughly around the same age as Jason making her 22 or 23, and Babs tends towards being 6-8 years older than Dick, although that is an age gap DC has been slowly bridging over the years. Still, I put her at 35 years old. I donāt have a reference for Duke Thomas either, but heās commonly placed as being two years younger than Tim making him 18 currently.
Lastly, I bring back the arbitrary number of 15, given that that is the number of years that separate Dick and Damian, I also use that age gap between Dick and Bruceāmeaning that Bruce took Dick in when he was 25, and placing Bruce at 44 years old in main continuity.
Overall Ages Currently:
Bruce Wayne: 44
Barbara Gordon: 35
Dick Grayson: 29
Jason Todd: 23
Cassandra Cain: 22
Tim Drake: 20
Stephanie Brown: 20
Duke Thomas: 18
Damian Wayne: 14

so i just enjoy the batfam totally from the outside, i've never read the comics, i've only seen the nolan movies, and i've seen maybe an episode or two of the animated series. i find the family dynamic interesting so i follow people who talk about it, and maybe i'll actually dive in someday haha but WOW!! your tags on that post about jason's death and bruce's reaction really just blew me away. it seems like cynically realistic view of what might really happen between family members with a strained relationship like theirs seems to be, and it's painful to read about! of course, it could all be done with the intention of the fans leaving with the thought that bruce is a Good Guy, but still. it feels real in a really sad way. is this story from the comics? if so, do you know which series?
Hey! Yeah... That's the thing I find fascinating too, regarding that whole conundrum I mention in my tags to this post. When it comes to Bruce and Jason and Joker, the Watsonian and Doylist perspectives are both needed to understand the dynamics. DC bringing Jason back from the dead to create conflict with Batmanā¦ and then deciding to keep the character, but not really knowing what to do with him. Jason could not be allowed to challenge Bruce too much, make Bruce look too much like he's in the wrong, because Batman is the hero. Batman is the main character. So what we ended up with was a narrative skewed hard in Bruce's favor, one that does things like putting the blame on Jason for his own death and writing Jason as forgiving things that are hard to imagine ever being forgiven. And this couldn't be done without making Bruce express this attitude as well, which is what I was referring to-- within-Universe, this reads as Bruce being unable to accept that he has wronged Jason, and resorting to defense mechanisms mired in denial and repression. To stave off his guilt.
I do agree it's compelling though, from a character point of view... it makes sense in a tragic kind of way. Bruce was crushed by grief and guilt after Jason's death, he entered a spiral that was only broken by Tim and Dick's intervention. And then Jason came back, and confronted Bruce with a very difficult choice, borne from his anger at seeing that Joker suffered no consequences after killing him. And thing is, I am of the opinion Bruce's choice not to commit murder, even Joker's, is valid. (And also, that Bruce did do something; he refused to save Joker's life after Jason was killed, but Joker survived anyway.) The problem is... you know, Bruce slitting Jason's throat to save Joker's life. An almost-murder of his adopted son to avoid the murder of the guy who killed him. And how do you live with that, I suppose? Other than scrambling for every justification under the sun and burying yourself under mountains of denial? If Bruce reacted so strongly to Jason's death, how would he be able to keep going if he accepted the fact he nearly killed Jason himself? It's an incredibly selfish choice to shift blame onto Jason instead, make everything about Jason's death and not at all about the events of UtRH... but it makes sense in the context of Bruce defending himself from a grief and guilt he cannot come back from. Jason having committed crimes and killing people made it easier for Bruce to do this, too. Hide behind Jason's "instability".
Oof, ended up rambling again, sorry for how long this gets! I gotta say though, I'm not primarily a Batfam fan; I've got a similar approach to you, Anon. Making the note because there's definitely some comic-knowledgeable Batfam experts out there who are better equipped to speak on the topic. Alas, when asking about the story itself, I assume you mean Jason's death and return? Because if you want to read about that, I'd recommend the following (in this order):
Batman: A Death in the Family (Jason's murder)
Batman: A Lonely Place of Dying (for Bruce's reaction to Jason's death)
Optional: The Batman Files (Bruce's journal entry regarding Jason's death, which is a contradictory combination of blaming himself and Jason for it)
Optional: Batman: Gotham Knights #43-44 (for Bruce's recall of the events and a story that suggests that, even if Jason had been an emotional and reckless teenager, Bruce as an adult should have made better choices regarding him-- shoutout to Barbara)
Optional: Batman (1940) Annual #25 (Jason coming back to life)
Optional: Red Hood: The Lost Days (Jason's time after being resurrected and prior to coming back to Gotham)
Batman: Under the Red Hood (Jason's return)
And I guess if you want a sampler of what Bruce sounds like at his shittiest when doing the stuff described, there's Batman: Battle for the Cowl #3, in which Bruce leaves Jason a message post-mortem. It's not a very nice message. And I wish I could say Bruce at least doesn't do more shitty things regarding Jason even after all of that, but I'd have to be lying.
#catch me still pissed at Bruce for trying to get Jason to basically retraumatize himself. so that Bruce could try to resurrect Damian#ANYWAY. just in case I will say that this is all character analysis. it doesn't mean Bruce is Evil or Jason is Innocent#or any kind of moralistic standpoint. it's not a simple situation at all and that's the appeal of it#I'm someone who likes Bruce Jason AND Joker as characters and enjoy dissecting them from all aspects#asks#long post

hi hi! c: for the Get to know your fic writer! meme - 1, 17, 22, 56, and 67? (however many you'd like to answer!)
hiiiiii :D
thanks for the ask!! <3
Do you prefer writing one-shots or multi-chaptered fics?
It depends on what I'm going for! I think that broadly I'd prefer to write one-shots, but I'm very very bad at being concise in writing, so often they turn into multi-chapter fics without me noticing lol The fun thing about oneshots is that you can be Vague and leave people guessing about implication breadcrumbs left through the fic. But the fun thing about multi-chapter fics is that I do really love worldbuilding...
17. What do you do when writing becomes difficult? (maybe a lack of inspiration or writers block)
For a lack of inspiration, usually I have to step away from the project for a while. Trying to write while uninspired tends to do me more harm than good, and inspiration tends to find me at the most unexpected times. So chances are I'll be coming back to it pretty quickly, when the time is right.
For writers block, I usually bring the issue to my beta reader and we talk through it and brainstorm. Getting a second opinion is really helpful! Especially when the other person can see things that you've missed because you were the one writing it. So, shout out to my beta reader for being excellent (and also for enabling me lol) <3
22. Are there certain types of writing you wonāt do? (style, pov, genre, tropes, etc)
There are! But for different reasons. Style: I think that epistolary style can be done very well, but I'm not super good at it and have no particular desire to expand my writing skill set in that direction. POV: Likewise, first person and second person pov can be well done (harder with second person, imo), but they're not for me. I could probably write third person omniscient, but I much prefer third person limited because playing with perception and who knows what (and when) is really fun for me! The downside is that sometimes people reading my fic are like. Why didn't the POV character know this thing that they couldn't possibly have known at the time in the plot?? So I think that some people don't understand that third person omniscient and limited pov's are different things Genre: I'm really really really really not a fan of slice of life, as a genre. Or coffee shop AUs. Any genre where narrative conflict is deemphasized is a genre that I'm not super interested in reading or writing Tropes: I won't write AOB because I'm squicked out by the biological determinism and recreation of heterosexual gender dynamics in queer relationshps. Like, I know there are subversions that don't do that, but the majority of it plays it straight, so it's not for me. I also won't write pregnancy of any sort or child acquisition because the first squicks me out and the latter makes me uncomfortable. For DC-specific tropes, I won't write joker junior because the concept makes me sad. I've also been leaning away from a lot of the fanon tropes (i.e. stuff like Tim having a coffee addiction) because while they're fun as jokes, the way that some people are treating them as canon annoys me. Long answer is long lol
56. Whatās something about your writing that you pride yourself on?
I like to think that I write pretty compelling relationship dynamics. Or at least I write them in the way that I want to read them, so. That's all that really matters to me at the end of the day <3
67. Do you prefer prompts and challenges, or completely independent ideas?
I prefer prompts and challenges since I get to interpret them broadly! Chances are that by they end, they've become completely independent ideas anyway XD
(questions are from this prompt list)

Last Line Challenge
Rules: Make a new post and post the latest line in your WIP & tag as many people as there are words (or as many as you feel like).Ā
I got tagged by @shootingstarpilot for this, which is very neat. Never actually done one of these before properly, so I'mma share two different last sections; some from my current in-progress Big Fic, and then some from the last thing I actually wrote.
(Under a cut because two snippets is gonna be long.)
So first off, the last thing I actually wrote;
'āJesus.ā Tim muttered. āI sort of wish I hadnāt asked, now.ā
Phantom flushed, going slightly green. āSorry.ā
āHey, better to know than not, isnāt it? If thereās a chance of running into stuff like this?ā
āI- well, yes, but itās not your job to deal with them.ā
āYeah, well, the magic users in the League arenāt always gonna be around, and even if itās your job to come grab them, they might still need delaying or whatever.ā Tim shrugged. āSo Iād rather know.ā
āThatās fair.ā Phantom admitted, shifting to lean back in his seat. āSo. Anything else you want to know?ā'
I'm not 100% sure what's going to happen to this, admittedly, but this is the end result of my attentive deficit muse getting into two new-old fandoms recently so there we go. It's DC/Danny Phantom.
Anyway, second off, the last little bit of my current main project, which has been going on-and-off for a while;
'
āHuh.ā Fox says, after a few attempts that die before he manages to get a word out. āOk. Right. Ghost let me go so I can go hug my vod, please.ā
Ghost does not let Fox go, and instead after a moment the entire mass of darkness lifts up into the air and floats over the group to place Fox down next to Ponds. Then it vanishes, and Fox promptly grabs on to him while the rest of the batch crowd around.'
This one's a crossover too, the end result of me just deciding that Weird Eldritch Things Are Neat, Actually and starting writing without thinking. It's now 15 chapters and like, 60k words, not quite done, but also hit a roadblock recently in the form of the aforementioned 'falling into new-old fandoms again' thing. It's Star Wars/Hollow Knight.
checks my people list uuuuuh right I don't have many people to tag really... @kalicofox is my main writing buddy, so here you go, and then I guess anyone else who sees this and feels like doing it can go ahead as well? No pressure, of course, there's a lot going on.
#writing#fic writing#the development of fic#tag games#fandom tags are;#star wars#hollow knight#dc#danny phantom#snippets#i honestly really like both of these fics#the SW/HK one has been a ton of fun to work on and it *is* actually going fairly well in terms of 'being written'#i've just been busy recently#but it's all planned out and everything so all i need to do is not be too tired to type#meanwhile the DC/DP stuff is a bit weirder#mostly because i don't know DC canon well at all#and barely know anything about DP (aside from slowly watching the show)#but it's still a pretty fun thing to be poking at and i think i will expand it more when i have time#at the minute it's basically just concept + half an ending but i'll get there

Okay I kinda wanna talk about Tim because this is my account and I do what I want
On one hand, I understand why people hate him. Heās a Rich White Sad Boy, and we have plenty of those, but like,,,,,, I think Tim as a character is a pretty interesting move for the batman universe. At least in concept
Heās written to be a self-insert. Itās obvious. Heās a boy with a neglectful family life (which is far more common than the other batkids), who gets noticed by the heroes he adores and they think heās smart, who has very little personality traits other than that, etc
But thatās exactly why I think heās interesting. Because a lot of the things interrelate and if they had actually been explored it properly it would have been so cool.
To start off, the child neglect. This is a kid who has had limited social interaction his entire life. The two people who are supposed to love him the most didnāt care enough to even call most of the time, and most of the kids that talked to him would have been doing so because of his parents, how would that affect a person?
He, like many batfamily fans, fixates on a family situation he perceives as healthy. He follows them around, watches the Robins and their interactions with Batman, takes pictures of everything and keeps them in a scrapbook like someone would do their own family photos. He projects himself onto them, pretends like heās a part of them, wishes that his own life could be like that...
But then something happens. Jason dies. The only true family heās ever known, even if they never knew him, is fractured. Dick stops coming by as often, Bruce starts getting suicidal. Everythingās gone to shit and heās desperate to fix it. He knows whatās wrong and, after a lot of convincing, he manages to get Bruce to let him correct it.
Which means heās officially a part of the family heās always wanted to be in! The childhood dream that he never fully dared to allow himself to wish for has come true! Sure, Bruce is still a little hesitant about him, but heās officially Robin!
Now what?
Now he hits a problem. Everything he defines himself with are mostly just his status ā heās the heir to Drake Industries! ā and thatās all. But now he isnāt really a Drake anymore, heās spent more time with Bruce in the past few months than he has with his biological parents since he was a baby. So, who is he?
Robin, of course! He canāt call himself Bruceās son, the man hadnāt adopted him and it felt a bit like he was betraying the Drakes by considering himself that, so he latched onto the only other thing present. He was Robin.
And this made him fear losing Robin even more. Because, if he wasnāt Robin, then who exactly was he? He knows he wasnāt chosen, that Dick and Jason were and he WASNT, heās so painfully aware of it. Bruce didnāt want him, not really.
And that was fine, he was used to people he loved not wanting him around.
In fact, this situation was even better than the usual. At least Bruce was willing to deal with him! Of course, he doesnāt know how long thatāll last, so he tells himself he has to work hard. If he messes up too much then Bruce will realize heās more trouble than heās worth, just like every parental figure always realizes given enough time, and he canāt deal with that.
Obviously, he becomes a perfectionist. He had already been pretty obsessive, this was almost inevitable. Late nights poring over files, unfocused in his classes, but a heās damn good Robin. And Bruce is noticing! Heās praising him for figuring things out so fast, heās thanking him for his help!
But Tim is a growing boy, and growing boys need their sleep. Poor reflexes, stunted growth, gradually declining ability to think... all bad things when youāre Robin. And Bruce is noticing, because of course he is heās BATMAN, but he hasnāt said anything yet so itās fine and really Tim can just deal with it ā.
Enter one Dick Grayson. He sees this kid take a pretty bad blow in a fight, sees this kid in the Robin suit nearly die while heās unable to do anything, and all he can think about is Jason dying alone in that warehouse while he was unable to do anything in space. He couldnāt save Jason. He can save Tim.
Visits from Bludhaven become more common despite all the tensions between Bruce and him. Tim doesnāt know why Dick is suddenly so interested in him, hardly anyone ever is, but he is more than happy to accept it for now.
Dick takes him out to see Gotham, not as vigilantes but as civilians. Tim has never seen Gotham like this, not really. His parents had never been all that interested in showing him, and school field trips are always spent bitching and moaning about how boring they were or stressing out over worksheets, so he hadnāt had a chance to really enjoy Gotham for what it was. A gorgeous place despite the circumstances.
He starts spending more time out in Gotham simply for himself, even when Dick wasnāt around. He starts meeting new people. He learns that heās a listener. Watching people talking about things they loved, seeing the way their faces light up and their hands move around wildly in their excitement, it becomes one of his favorite pastimes.
And, of course, they make life sound like so much fun. He starts doing even more. He visits the arboretum, the planetarium, the zoo, he loves them all. Nature was so gorgeous, and in Gotham it was such a rarity to see any of it that every time he visited he could feel the breath catch. He wants to make Gotham better. He knows not everyone can afford to go to these kinds of places all the time, so the only solution is to try and better the city.
Heās no longer Robin for the sake of being Batmanās Robin, heās Robin to help Gotham.
Heās doing it purely to be helpful, because he genuinely likes helping people now. Heās seen their smiles, heās heard their stories, and he wants to protect them.
But he canāt do that if he keeps working himself half to death (literally), so he starts allowing himself some proper rest. He is surprised to learn heās actually doing BETTER as Robin now. Heās a better fighter and a better detective, sure, but heās also more concerned about collateral damage in fights and heās better with victims.
And Bruce notices. Of course he does, heās Batman, but he doesnāt say anything again. Tim is doing well, and he was usually quiet about most things so he can leave him be.
Or, at least, that was the plan until a particularly adamant Dick drags him out of his brooding to talk to Tim. Bruce, however awkward and stilted, asks how his day went.
So Tim tells him that he doesnāt have to do that, that they donāt have to force a relationship. They were Batman and Robin, and that was enough for him, they didnāt need to be Bruce and Tim, too, if Bruce didnāt want it to be that way.
Bruceās breath catches just like Timās does when he sees the stars and the plants and the animals as they truly are. And then Bruce slowly draws him into a hug, itās painfully awkward and a little uncomfortable with all their armor, but then Bruce says that he does want it. That he wants Tim.
And Tim realizes then, with his face buried in Bruceās cape and promises of a better relationship with Bruce, that he isnāt Robin. Because Robin was little more than an idea.
He was just Tim. And maybe Tim was enough.

wait selina had her own protege? Tell me more š„ŗ
[Image ID: A young girl (maybe like 13-15) with hazel (yellowish) eyes and short brown hair. She's wearing a lot of eye makeup, a little hat with cat ears, and goggles. She wears a tie, pink vest, and grey t-shirt with pawprints. End ID]
Batman (1940) #642
Kitrina Falcone - link to wiki
She was a Catwoman copy cat (haha sorry i couldn't help it) who grew up with her abusive uncle (Mario Falcone - he literally tries to kill her in the arc she's in, she calls him uncle - but others claim she's his little sister and she claims she's Carmine's daughter) and lived on the streets for a while. She looked up to Catwoman and imitated her, but Selina steals some of her maps (i think like blueprints for heists or smth idk) so she breaks in to Selina's house to steal them back.
At this point she was working for Penguin (she bombed a place it was a whole thing) - her map making skills are vital for taking down/locating Black Mask so she's vital (she's doing this for the bounty). And she and Selina get on and Selina gives her a costume and she becomes Catgirl.
[Image ID: Selina Kyle as Catwoman and Kitrina Falcone as Catgirl stand on a rooftop next to each other with the moon illuminating them. The Catgirl costume has a studded silver belt and collar, black claw-like gloves, black leggings, and a black tank. There are pink zagging stripes on the side of the torso and back of her calf that have silver behind them. She also wears pink ankle high converse with a purple cat icon patch on the side. She has a mini cowl with cat ears that are pink on the inside and pink scale-like bracelets/ruffles at the end of her gloves. Narration boxes (Dick): Or in this case, in the reflection I catch out of the corner of my eye - the swift and agile movement in the reflection of the windows across the street. Selina: He's gone, Catgirl. Kitrina: I want to follow him. I bet he has a cool hideout. Selina: No. You have much to learn... and lesson one starts tonight. End ID]
Batman (1940) #697
Idk if she has any appearances as Catgirl, but following her appearances listed in the wiki she lives with Selina for a while until Dick tries to talk her into going to boarding school (with Selina also on board) on orders from Bruce.

Batman (1940) #710
Dick lecturing a kid about not being a child vigilante is just jdfklajdkfla hypocrite XD
Anyways from here on, she runs ahead on the case they're working on (i skimmed didn't actually read it) leaving him clues and such it's like the typical young vigilante storyline of being over confident. She gets in over her head, Dick catches up and bails her out - she runs (because this one actually has self preservation instincts unlike the 934758 other batfam characters). Dick gets shot in the head (again - but don't worry the cowl redistributed its impact *sigh* this man has so much head trauma, but comic book logic) by Harvey Dent's wife Gilda no less and wakes up later and finds this letter.
[Image ID: Dick looks down at a paper, bandages are wrapped around his forehead. He's drawn with blocky features there art style isn't doing him any favors. Dick: A letter from Kitrina Flacone. The note reads: Dear Batman, I am writing to keep you from worrying about what became of me. I wouldn't want you to think that "Catgirl" got in over her head. Or was kidnapped, or killed. They show the side of a travelling bus. Note: I'm leaving voluntarily. In fact, I'm going to try out that school you signed me up for. It's probably a dumb idea... but I'm a girl who likes challenges. Kitrina sits looking into the window, seeing her reflection as Catgirl, earbuds in her ears. Note: And putting up with a bunch of rich prissy debutantes will be a challenge. I'm sure I'll put a few of them on their rears by the time it's over. But the point I'm making is, don't count me out. I'll be back. And I will be bad-assed. - Sincerely, K End ID]
Batman (1940) #712
The arc itself is pretty dry and follows a pattern we've already seen from DC comics. Also she's like "I'll be back" and DC just went sike. So. Yeah. Reboot messed her stuff up. It's annoying to me that they made Lian Selina's new protƩgƩ or whatever when they already had this storyline right here, and to have Jade drop her off like that is ooc, especially because Roy was right there as well. And while Kitrina might not be for everyone personality wise, I personally would love to see her kick rich kids asses at boarding school. Or just have her train under Selina - because at the least she already grew up watching Selina and trying to emulate her, both in personality and in the skills she taught herself - so the connection for this character is already there - whereas "Shoes" just came out of nowhere.
Another thing I find kind of funny is the popularity of "Stray" fics, because she hits some of the same beats I've heard about (i haven't read any though this is second hand knowledge). To my understanding, when someone (Tim or Jason) is stray, they grow up on the streets trying to escape familial abuse (which she does) and eventually is taken in by Catwoman (which she is) and becomes her protƩgƩ (again which canonically happened to this character). Though she doesn't interact with her respective Robin (Damian at the time) too much which i think is also usually a part of said fics.
Anyways here's her being called a stray lakdfjaslfdj
[Image ID: Kitrina as Catgirl slams into a car, Riddler's daughter following after her. Riddler's daughter: I need to warn you. I hate cats. Kitrina is kicked through the cars windshield. Riddler's daughter: Especially strays. Kitrina: Oofh! End ID]
Batman (1940) #711
I have no idea if this is a coincidence or not - this character has very few appearances, which date back to the Dick!Bats era - so i assume most of this fandom doesn't actually know who she is, but it's possible one of the first "Stray" fics used her as inspiration.
Also she freaking bit Dick as Batman which i find hilarious - i know fandom makes a big thing about Damian being a biter but like:
[Image ID: Kitrina bites someone's gloved forearm - it's Dick as Batman but you can't tell from the panel, forcing him to drop a knife. There's a chomp sound effect. Kitrina: What're ya? Crazy?! You're not killing him! Dick: Umff!]
Batman (1940) #696
*CHOMP*
#I also found a panel of Steph biting the Black Mask during War Games and i was like yes get him!!!#thanks for the ask i'm sorry this was so gosh darn long lmao#Kitrina falcone#stray#i wouldn't go looking for stray stuff apparently theres a lot of j*y/t*m which is why i avoid it#and allow the more dedicated individuals wade through the trash and tell me about it#either which way i'm literally so angry they chose to do a stupid ass plot with Lian instead of just bringing her back#like dc please read your own comic book canon and then we can talk#asks#batfam#little known batfam members#batfamily#catwoman#catgirl#dc comics#selina kyle

tim being considered the nerd robin is still so funny to me, this is the high school drop out who ignored his schoolwork over robin, and whilst he WAS friends with the nerds even jocks thought he was cool and wanted to hang with him. dick, jason AND damian constitute as much nerdier robins, jason especially. i would argue tim is less nerdy more.. dorky. especially as a robin.
anyways tl;dr tim isnt a nerd heās the centre of this chart

Plan D for Dicey.
{MaribatMarch2020 ā Week 1, Day 6: Unconventional Weapon}
| [Ao3 Link] | | [Masterlist Link] |
Triggers/Warnings: D&D typical Violence, kidnapping/imprisoning of Player Characters, Explicit Language/Swearing, (Also not so much a Trigger/Warning but this a gen/platonic fic).
The Wayne (bat)family attempt to play their first streamed session of Warriors and Warlocks. Unpredictably, things go surprisingly well.
Word Count: 4323
==ā==
A/N: So firstly, I got really carried away writing this so it's being posted a day late. Sorry! But fun fact, this means I'm posting this on my birthday, so wooh! Also if you can't tell yet, I'm a massive D&D geek (been playing for roughly five years now but I still fell like a complete noob whenever I play or DM :P). And DC has its own version of D&D (W&W/Warriors and Warlocks) and upon reading Day 6's prompt, my immediate thought was the improvised weapons mechanic from D&D. Also also, I originally intended for this fic to be MariTim (hence the tags) but I got caught up in all the platonic fun of the family playing D&D I kinda forgot to write in the shippy bits?
A/N cont.: Writing this was actually a massive challenge because at the start of this I had absolutely zero idea on how to write a D&D session as a ficlet. So this might be a bit more clunky and unrefined compared to my normal work (or that could just be my self-doubt talking). As I mentioned earlier, I got really carried away writing this because I love D&D so much. I would have written more but this ficlet is long enough and late enough as is. But if I were to continue this ficlet in additional parts, I definitely can already think of so many ways to improve writing this sort of fic (and maybe next time I won't forget to add in shippy stuff). Anyway, thanks to those who read these A/Ns, and I hope you guys enjoy reading this!
If you want to be tagged in future oneshots/fics, or a specific Au, then comment or send me a DM/ask!
Also side note, Don't Like? Don't Read. Also also, please do not criticise any of my writing. This was written for fun and receiving criticism, even in a compliment/criticism sandwich, is the exact opposite of fun.

Marinette, with Tikki on her shoulder, bursts into the Wayne Manor games room, barely able to contain her excitement. As the first in the room, she can't help but glance across the square conference U-table already set up with everyone's character sheets, dice equipment, other equipment, and snacks and drinks. Bounding over to her designated seat (right side, place nearest to the DM's section of the table), she pulls her chair out and sits down.
Ā The rest of the Wayne (bat)family, including Steph but sans Alfred and Barbara, slowly filter into the room and take their designated seats. Jason takes his seat next to Marinette whilst Dick takes the seat directly opposite. Steph nabs the seat beside Jason, Damian stakes a claim to the seat next to Dick (despite it already being his designated seat), Cass sits down in the seat beside Steph, leaving Bruce to take his seat next to Damian.
Ā Tim's the last of the family to enter. He slips into his seat, the DM's seatāas he is the most experienced Warriors and Warlocks player at the tableāand grins downright ferally at his players.
Ā He looks up at the cameras and recording equipment that is set up in the middle of the open space in the square U-table. āHello and welcome to Plan D for Dicey, the first-ever Wayne Family Warriors and Warlocks fifth edition stream. We weren't quite expecting so many people to petition that we stream our sessions after a few peopleāā Tim fake coughs twice, āāDick and Marinetteāā Tim fake coughs twice again (whilst Marinette and Dick both grin and wave cheerfully at the cameras), āārambled about their characters and some highlights from previous sessions, on Twitter. So we decided to give this a go and see how the session pans out whilst being streamed. So as a word of warning, prepare yourselves for the Venators, probably one of the most dysfunctional parties in W&W to miraculously band together.ā
Ā As soon as he says this, the rest of the table burst into grins and cheers (excluding Bruce who despite also smiling, looks like he's just aged five years). Marinette's side of the table all high five each other in their excitement.
Ā Tim pauses for a second. āFor anyone unfamiliar with who I am, I'm Tim. And as you can probably tell from the table set up, I'm the Dungeon Master for this campaign. That's because I've been playing W&W for just over five years now and have had experience DMing before. But for the rest of the players here, this is their first campaign and by extension first time playing. So before we begin our session, first let us introduce our players and their characters.ā He nods to Marinette's side of the table.
Ā She immediately slaps her hands on the table, pushes her chair out and stands, she waves at the cameras again. āHi, I'm Marinette and my character is Nella Septa-Punctata. She's a Protector Aasimar Celestial Pact of the Chain Warlock, and she has a Sprite Familiar called Tikki. Nella's Chaotic Good and a little anxious but she tries her best to be a kind and heroic adventurer.ā She then sits back down, scraping her chair back in again.
Ā Jason raises an eye at Marinette's antics but shrugs. āI'm Jay, I play a Winged Variant Feral Tiefling Gunslinger called Rehodros. He's Chaotic Neutral, verging on Chaotic Evil at times, and he only joined the Venators because they helped save him from backstory related stuff and he ended up getting reluctantly attached to them.ā
Ā Deciding to also stand up from her chair as well as slap the table with both hands, Steph smirks at the cameras. āI'm Stephanie, my character's Speilsol Leyer, and she's a Chaotic Good Variant Human Ancestral Guardian Barbarian with the Tavern Brawler Feat. She lives for beating up bad guys and doing good, even if it goes against the law.ā
Ā Cass decides to take things one step further and moves to sit on the back of the chair, balancing it carefully as to not let herself fall. She waves at the cameras. āHi, I Cass. Play Balabitara. Neutral Good, Kalashtar Shadow Monk.ā She then sits back down on the chair normally.
Ā With one half of the table introduced, Tim nods towards the other side of the table.
Ā Dick winks at the cameras, āI'm Dick and I play Niriwyse, a Chaotic Good Eladrin Glamour Bard who's along for the ride and just wants to have a good time.ā At that, he wiggles his eyebrows.
Ā Scoffing, Damian glares at the cameras. āI am Damian and my character is Rokian. He is a Firbolg Circle of the Shepherd Druid and is Lawful Neutral in the sense that he believes the only laws that should be obeyed in the world, are that or the laws of nature. He begrudgingly joined this party of adventurers after they saved an animal friend of his.ā
Ā This leaves Bruce as the only one to have not introduced himself and his character yet. He smiles his Brucie Wayne smile at the cameras. āMy name's Brucie and my character is called Chirop. He's a Chaotic Good Bugbear Swashbuckler Rogue. He comes across as very gruff, but he's just a big old teddy bear at heart.ā
Ā Tim coughs under his breath. āAlright, with our introductions over, let's get on with the show.ā The lights in the room suddenly dim and turn a dark red shade whilst creepy echoing organ music begins to play from hidden speakers. āLast session, our brave party of seven adventurers were captured by the evil Lich Dreldaz whilst trying to rescue the beautiful princess Theophaniaāā
Ā āāTimothea!ā Corrects the rest of the table.
Ā Rolling his eyes, Tim continues. āāfrom the cursed castle in which she has been trapped in, by Dreldaz.ā He pauses, steepling his fingers as the dim red lighting becomes a dark grey shade. āThe Venators awaken, only to find themselves shackled to the walls, in individual stone brick cells and stripped of any and all equipment bar the clothes on their backs. From what you all can immediately tell upon waking, these cells are small, cold, dark and dingy. What do you do?ā
Ā The seven players all exchange glances between themselves.
Ā āI'd like to look around my cell, see if I can find anything or if I can get an idea of what the cellblock we're in looks like?ā Jason announces after a few seconds.
Ā Tim nods. āRoll a perception check, please.ā
Ā Jason narrows his eyes Tim. He reaches towards the red and black dice set beside his character sheet and picks up the D20. He shakes the dice in his hands before rolling it into the dice box. It lands on a 7. āAlright so because I don't have my gear any more, that means I don't have my eyes of the eagle right?ā
Ā āThat's right,ā Tim responds.
Ā āMmk, that's a seven then, plus my perception modifierā¦ Fourteen total.ā Jason glances up at Tim once he finishes calculating.
Ā Humming, Tim glances down at his Mysteriousā¢ DM notes. āWith your Darkvision, you manage to make out that there are two small barred windows on the walls adjacent to the wall with the cell door. The door luckily has a barred window in it too, but you're too far away to glean anything from peering at it.ā
Ā Marinette purses her lips and double-checks her character sheet. āIs there anything magical about the darkness in these cells?ā
Ā āRoll an Arcana check to see.ā Is Tim's response.
Ā She reaches over to the pink and gold dice set beside her character sheet and picks up the D20. She shakes the dice in her hands before rolling it into the dice box. The D20 lands on a 16. āSixteen! Wait, plus my arcana modifier, uhā¦ā She scans her sheet for the relevant modifier, āplus six, so that's uhā¦ oh heck maths, uhh I think that's twenty-two total? Yeah.ā She nods to herself at calculating the maths.
Ā Jason snorts and addresses the cameras. āThis is why you should stay in school kids!ā
Ā Huffing, Marinette elbows him in the side. āFight me!ā
Ā Not evening flinching at the elbowing, Jason pats her on the top of her head. āFriendly fire, Mari! Friendly fire!ā
Ā Tim waits for silence with his best poker face on. āAs far as you can tell, there is nothing magical about the darkness!ā
Ā āReally?ā She furrows her brows. āAlright then.ā
Ā He smiles in response.
Ā Dick glances down at his character sheet then up at Tim, he taps his fingers against the table idly as he speaks. āThe walls of the cells are stone? So I can use my Cli Lyre to cast Stone Shape and create a hole in the stone where the metal shackles connect, which would free me, right!ā
Ā Clicking his tongue, Tim shakes his head. āNope, you don't have your Cli Lyre on you right now, so you can't cast any spells from it.ā
Cursing under his breath, Dick frantically scans his character sheet for anything. He reaches his spells and freezes and slaps the spell sheet (and by extension, the table). āAh hah!ā He crows, āI will cast Knock on the shackles!ā
Ā Tim raises an eyebrow, then looks down to flip through his spell cheat sheet. āWhen you cast the spell, it makes a loud knock that's audible for up to three hundred feet. Are you sure you want to cast this?ā
Ā Dick falters and furrows his brow, then glances around the table at the rest of the party. āI think I'll wait and see if anyone else has a way to escape this first? Wait we can all hear each other speaking from our cells, right?ā
Ā āYou can indeed.ā Tim answers.
Ā āI got nothin',ā Jason admits, putting on his Rehodros voice, which is just his normal voice but deeper and with a raspyāalmost hissingāclipped tone.
Ā Steph, using her Speilsol Leyer voice (which sounds like she's putting on a weak German accent), shrugs. āI could try breaking the shackles? I'm strong enough to do cool things like that?ā
Ā Ā āBut that will also be fairly loud.ā Bruce points out, speaking with a gruff tone of voice (which is significantly different from his gravelly Batman tone of voice) for Chirop. āIf I had my lockpicks, it would be easy to escape stealthily. But without them, I can't see a way for me to get out of these shackles.ā
Ā Damian wrinkles his nose. āI might be able to summon creatures, elementals, or fey but what I get is determined by the DM and may not be entirely helpful. However, I could try wildshaping?ā
Ā Tim smiles cryptically and the lighting behind him changes from dark grey to lime green. āYou could.ā
Ā Damian nods. āAlright then, I will use my wildshape ability to transform into a spider.ā
The lime green light fades to flickering orange-red light. āAs you try to use your druidic abilities to magically assume the shape of a spider, you feel a burning sensation around your wrists, right where the shackles are. You are unable to transform and takeā¦ā Tim pauses as he pulls out his black and red dragon dice and rolls a D6 behind the DM screen. āFive points of fire damage.ā
Ā Cursing under his breath in Arabic, Damian glares at Tim. He crosses out his current hp and writes down the new amount.
Ā Jason taps Marinette on the shoulder. āWhat about Nells, Mari? She got any tricks up her sleeve to escape?ā
Ā Marinette startles at that, having been chewing her lip and staring intently at her character sheet since her arcana check. She licks her lips then glances up. āI mightā¦ā
Ā She taps a small stat block card with a pencil and turns to Tim with an intense stare. āIs Tikki nearby?ā
Ā At that, Tim grins widely and raises a finger. āThat,ā He says, flipping through his notes, āis a very good question.ā
Ā āBecause on my notes, here it says that last session Tikki was invisible when we all got captured.ā Marinette picks up her session notes journal and shows it to him.
Ā āWould you say Tikki followed after you when you got caught?ā
Ā Marinette tilts her head to the side and Tikki whispers in her ear. Of course, the cameras inability to record kwamis means it just looks like she's thinking instead of listening to a flying red bug deity. āYep, I would say that. I would also like to telepathically communicate with Tikki and ask if she can come and pick the locks because we gave her a spare Thieves' Tools kit last shopping session in case she needed to pick the locks during an invisible scouting mission!ā
Ā āIndeed you did, so Tikki flies over to your cell and will try to pick the locks on your door first. So roll a d20 and add Tikki's Dex bonus.ā He instructs.
Ā Marinette nods and picks up the dice, cupping her hands underneath it so Tikki can shake then roll it without it looking suspicious on camera. Tikki shakes the dice and drops it as Marinette separates her hands. The dice lands in the box and rolls a 16. āPlus Tikki's Dex mod, that's uhā¦ā She scrambles for the Sprite Familiar statblock card, āPlus four, so dirty twenty!ā
Ā āThat's enough to pick the lock. Do you want Tikki to enter the cell and try to pick the lock?ā He asks.
Ā She nods and repeats the roll with Tikki, this time rolling an eleven. āWith mods, fifteen.ā Tikki then returns to her place on Marinette's shoulder.
Ā āTikki barely manages to get the locks open. The shackles open and you land on the cell floor.ā
Ā Marinette punches the air. āWooh! Freedom!ā
Ā Cass then waves her hand in the air. āShadowstep out?ā
Ā Tim cocks his head to the side. āAs you don't have Darkvision, you can't see outside your cell but you manage to use your shadowstep ability to escape the shackles. Then by peering out the barred window in the door, you manage to shadow step into the cellblock corridor.ā
Ā Marinette and Cass share a high-five.
Ā āLet's go free everyone else!ā
==ā==
Ā It takes them ten minutes to finish freeing everyone else, and start making their way out of the dungeon cell block. The Venators now make their way through the bowels of the castle, searching for the armoury in which all their belongings have been stored.
Ā āAs you push open the grand oak doors, the faint scent of sickly sweet rotting food and fire hits your noses. The doors reveal the next room to be a grand dining room with a long oak table, set as though prepared for a grand feast expecting many a guest. It's adequately lit but the two corners of the room above the door seem to glow with a dim greenish glow.ā Tim pauses in his description as lighting changing to a dim greenish light behind him; he rolls a D8 four times (6, 7, 2, 4), behind the DM screen, followed by the rolling of a D20 four times (3, 19, 13, 18).
Ā āOh godā¦ā Dick mutters,Ā
Ā Jason huffs. āWhat are you going to torture us with now, oh great DM?ā
Ā Tim smiles cruelly. āFour rays of fire are shot towards the party from somewhere within the dining room. First attack is an eight versus Chirop's AC?ā
Ā Bruce sighs in relief. āThat's a miss.ā
Ā Tim continues to smile. āMmk, the rest of the attacks are, twenty-four versus Balabitara's AC, eighteen versus Niriwyse's AC, and twenty-three verses Rokian's AC. I assume those hit.ā
Ā Damian narrows his eyes at Tim, whilst Dick winces and Cass pouts.
Ā Tim rolls a D6 nine times, behind the DM screen. āBalabitara takes four points of fire damage, Niriwyse and Rokian both take eight points of fire damage.ā
Ā The three all jot down the damage taken.
Ā Still smiling, like the truly evil DM that he is, Tim clasps his hands together. āTwo skulls, enveloped with green flames, descend from the ceiling. One hovers over the grand table and the other hovers but the top of the opened doors, giving itself cover.ā He pauses, then grins. āWith the surprise round over, everyone roll initiative!ā
Ā Out of habit, all seven players, and Tikki, roll their D20s in almost perfect sync. Dick rolls an 18, Cass rolls a 9, Jason rolls a 14, Bruce rolls a 16, Steph rolls a 17 with advantage, Damian rolls a 2, Marinette rolls a 10, and Tikki rolls a 14.
Ā āTwenty or above?ā Tim asks.
Ā āTwenty three,ā Bruce announces.
Ā Jason rolls his eyes. āTwenty-one.ā
Ā Dick grins, āTwenty one as well!ā
Ā Tim scribbles down the rolls on the initiative table. āD'awww, you both rolled twenty-one. Anyway, fifteen or above?ā
Ā āTikki rolled an eighteen.ā Informs Marinette.
Ā āI got nineteen!ā Steph exclaims.
Ā Jotting down those rolls as well, Tim asks āAlright, anyone ten or above?ā
Ā Cass signs her roll, āfourteen.ā
Ā āThirteen.ā Marinette answers.
Ā Tim glances at the initiative table, then at Damian. āAnd you Damian?ā
Ā Damian scoffs. āThree.ā
Ā āOkay.ā Tim then rolls a D20 twice. āChirop! You're up first!ā
Ā Bruce looks slightly bewildered. He clears his throat. āCan I grab the nearest sharp pieces of cutlery and sneak behind a chair?ā
Ā Tim nods. āRoll stealth.ā
Ā He rolls an 18. āMy stealth modifier is plus thirteen, so thirty-one to stealth.ā
Ā Tim whistles, āTo the rest of the Venators, it looks like Chirop just vanishes into thin air.ā
āAre any of the enemies close enough that I could move into melee range?ā He questions.
Ā āThere's one floating Flameskull hovering five foot in the air, with your Long-Limbed trait, it's well within reach,ā Tim informs.
Ā Bruce narrows his eyes. āI would like to stab the Flameskull with the sharp cutlery, knives are preferable.ā
Ā āRoll to hit. As knives are close enough to daggers, I'll say you can get away with adding your proficiency bonus as well.ā
Ā Bruce rolls, with advantage, a 19. āPlus my modifiers, that's twenty-eight to hit.ā
Ā āThat hits.ā
Ā Bruce rolls for damage, 2. āThat's two, so seven.ā He then rolls for Surprise damage, 8 (5, 3), and Sneak Attack damage, 24 (6, 2, 5, 6, 5). āThat's a total of 39 piercing damage. Then I'll use my bonus action to stab it again,ā He rolls a 16, āTwenty-one to hit.ā
Ā Ā Tim puts on his best poker face. āThat also hits.ā
Ā āThen that'll beā¦ā He rolls a 1. āOne damage from the second attack.ā
āThe Flameskull you hit screeches in fury as it crumbles to bone dust.ā Tim then proceeds to make a horrific screeching sound, for immersion of course.
Ā āWhat the fuck, Timbo?ā Jason asks, wincing.
Ā Ā Dick cringes. āAt least you aren't right beside him! My poor ears!ā
Ā āRip us closest seats.ā Mumbles Marinette, wrinkling her nose.
āRehodros, you're up next!ā Tim announces gleefully, ignoring his suffering players.
Ā Jason narrows his eyes at Tim, āI want to run over to the table, grab any food on the table that's not rotten, and yeet it at the nearest Flameskull.ā
Ā Tim hums, āOkay, the only non-rotten food you can find, is a block of aged cheese and a bowl of hardened sugar cubes.
Ā Snorting, Jason cracks his knuckles. āOh, I have to pick the block of aged cheese.ā
Ā āRoll your attack then. But make sure you only add your Dex modifier to the attack as you're not proficient in improvised weaponry.ā
Ā Jason rolls to attack and also gets a 19. āTwenty four to hit.ā
Ā Tim snorts. āYeah, that definitely hits, go ahead and roll damage.ā
Ā Jason nods and rolls a 1D4, managing to get max damage. āFour! Wooh! Plus my Dex mod, that's nine damage!ā
Ā āYou lob the cheese at the Flameskull, managing to cause a couple of cracks to form on its skull. It turns it's furious gaze to you, intending to intimidate you but the effect is somewhat hindered by the melting cheese covering half of its skull.ā Tim flips through his notes and marks down the damage taken.
Ā āOkay, then I want to grab the bowl of sugar and using my extra attack to throw that at the Flameskull, in the jaw.ā Jason smirks and switches to his Rehodros voice, āYou look like you've got a sssweet tooth, bonehead!ā He rolls to attack and gets a 12. āSeventeen to hit?ā
Ā āThat will hit.ā
Ā Jason rolls a 3 on the D4. āThat's eight damage total.ā
āAs the bowl of sugar starts to melt from the heat of the fire, the sickly sweet scent of hot sugar begins to emanate from the Flameskull. The Flameskull does not look happy.ā Tim pauses to glance at the initiative table. āNiriwyse! You're up.ā
Ā Dick glances down at his spell list and beams. āI'm going to cast Vicious Mockery. And say,ā he puts on his Niriwyse voice, which is just his voice but higher pitch and with a British Estuary accent, āGreen is so not your colour!ā
Ā Tim hums, then flips through his notes. āWhat's the spell Save DC on that again?ā
Ā Quickly checking his spell sheet, Dick answers, āDC 16.ā
Ā āMmk,ā Tim responds non-committally, before rolling a D20 twice from behind the DM screen. āThat, unfortunately for you, is a nat 20. Which means it takes no damage and suffers no disadvantage. The Flameskull turns to you briefly, to cackle in your face, before turning its attention back to Rehodros.ā
Ā Ā Dick frowns. āAww that failed, welp I'll use my bonus action to give Speilsol Leyer inspiration.ā He clears his throat and puts on his Niriwyse voice to sing. āLet's get down to business! To defeat, this skull! Did they order heroes, no they asked for none! We're the saddest party you'll ever meet! But you can bet before we're through, Flameskull, we'll make dust out of you!ā
Ā The rest of the table burst into cheers and groans.
Ā āBeautiful, Speilsol Leyer, you get 1D10 bardic inspiration,ā Tim confirms. āAnd now it's your turn. Show the audience what you've got.ā
Ā Steph giggles. āOkay, okay, I've got a really dumb idea.ā
Ā Tim raises an eyebrow at her.
Ā āSo, firstly, is there anything on the walls, like paintings? Wall sconces? Y'know.ā She asks.
Ā āThere's a painting of a naked elven lady on one wall, and a taxidermied fox head on the other,ā Tim informs.
Ā Steph bounces in her seat. āCool! So I'm gonna rage! Rip the taxidermied fox head off the wall, then run and leap up into the air to bludgeon the Flameskull with the fox head!ā
Ā āRight. Make an athletics roll.ā
Ā Rolling a D20, she gets 13. āTwenty one!ā
Ā āYou manage to jump into the air with expert grace. Roll to hit.ā
Ā She rolls a 16. āThat's a twenty-four to hit because I've got the Tavern Brawler Feat so I've got proficiency with improvised and-slash-or unconventional weapons!ā
Ā He snorts. āThat'll definitely hit, roll damage.ā
Ā Steph picks up her D4 and rolls it, getting a 3. āDo with my strength modifier and Rage damage, that's ten damage! And uh, that's the end of my turn!ā
Ā Tim scribbles down the damage taken, he then checks his notes quickly. āThe sugary cheese-covered Flameskull starts to cackle madly. It casts fireball on the party, everyone make dexterity saving throws.ā
Ā On cue, everyone in the party rolls their D20s. Tikki rolls an 18, Damian and Marinette both roll 16s, and Dick rolls a 4.
Ā Before Bruce rolls his dice, he proclaims, āI'd like to use evasion!ā He then rolls and gets a 5. āFourteen total.ā
Ā āEvasion too!ā Cass declares with a smile, she rolls her D20, getting 18. She then signs her result, ātwenty-seven
Ā āShit!ā Jason mutters, staring at his roll of 2.
Ā āNat one?ā Tim questions.
Ā Jason shakes his head. āNatural two, so seven total.ā
Ā āI also got seven,ā Dick adds.
Ā āSeventeen,ā Damian announces.
Ā āI rolled a nineteen and Tikki rolled a twenty-two.ā Marinette pipes up.
Ā Steph frowns at her roll of nine. āElevenā¦ā She glances at her character sheet again. āWait, no! I get advantage on dexterity saving throws!ā She shakes the dice in her hands and blows on it for good luck, then rolls it into the dice box. It lands on an 18. Fist pumping the air, she cheers. āYes! Dirty twenty, fuck yeah!ā
Ā āAlright. Niriwyse and Rehodros both takeā¦ā Tim rolls a D6 eight times, behind the DM screen. āTwenty-three fire damage. And everyone else except Chirop and Balabitara take half that, so eleven damage. And of course, Chirop and Balabitara take no damage whatsoever.ā
Ā āWooh,ā Bruce cheers.
Ā āWait a second!ā Jason interrupts, triple-checking his character sheet, āI've got fire resistance!ā
Ā āThen you also take eleven damage instead of the full twenty-three.ā Tim corrects. āAnd that's the end of the Flameskull's turn. Tikki's up now.ā
Ā Marinette tilts her head to the side as Tikki whispers in her again. āTikki is going to hold her turn.ā
Ā Tim nods. āOkay then, it's Balabitara's turn.ā
Ā Cass smiles sweetly. āJump and punch?ā
Ā āRoll an athletics check then, please.ā
Ā She rolls a 13, and signs her results, āeighteen.ā
Ā āYou barely manage to leap within melee range of the Flameskull,ā Tim narrates. āRoll to hit.ā
Ā She rolls her dice again, rolling a flat 17. Again, she signs her result, ātwenty-six.ā
Ā āThat will definitely hit.ā He acknowledges.
Ā Cass then rolls damage, gets a 4, and signs the total, ānine.ā She glances down at her character sheet, and then back up at Tim. āSecond attack?ā
Ā Tim nods again, still jotting down the damage taken. āGo ahead and roll.ā
Ā Rolling again, she gets a nine, so she signs the result, āeighteen.ā
Ā He hums, āThat'll also hit, roll damage.ā
Ā She rolls and gets a 3. āEight,ā she signs.
Ā Tim chuckles, āAs you punch the Flameskull twice, the skull shatters and turns into sugary and cheesy skull dust.ā
Ā Cass grins and fist-pumps the air as the rest of the table breaks into cheers.
Ā āEveryone breathe a sigh of relief! Encounter over.ā He comments. āAnd I think we've reached our halfway mark, so we'll take a quick five minutes break to grab something to eat and drink, and we'll continue on after the break.ā

Small response ask to that anon who brought up Chris Priest and your response of DC should focus less on Bruce being abusive to his kids. Not sure if you noticed the up and down of the Batman comics but it seems the arc that have him being a caring dad has less asshole dad and abusive dad in them and yet the arc that have Bruce hitting the boys or kicking them out of the house has Bruce not acknowledging the boys as his sons and even the writers say Dick is more of a brother of partner than son.
Oh for sure, its absolutely true that a huge part of the problem with the Batman comics is the sheer inconsistency in writer visions of the characters - which is why IMO its up to DCās editorial staff to maintain internal consistency for how the characters officially relate to each other at the very least.Ā
Like Iāve said before, you canāt roll back the clock on them being his kids once youāve established theyāre his kids. People havenāt forgotten that Tim was adopted by Bruce in the old continuity just because they decided to have his parents alive in the New 52 - andĀ āteenage kinda sorta allyā is an inherently weaker emotional tether compared toĀ āactual adopted sonā so when presented with two options, most people arenāt going to give a shit about their attempt toĀ āunbondā a character from their actual parent and will stick with viewing them as father and son, whether DC likes it or not.
So its just plain foolishness IMO for DC to attempt to apply any sort of ambiguity to Bruce and his kids. Along with his biological son Damian, Dick, Jason, Tim and Cass at least have all been officially adopted by Bruce (or in Cassā case, they were stated to be starting adoption proceedings last we saw before the Reboot). Like....those are just hard facts, no matter how much people try andĀ āundoā that if they donāt personally like the idea of Bruce as a father of five....fans are not going to cooperate and its just sheer stubbornness to pretend otherwise. People before the current writers and editors made a creative choice to have Bruce adopt these kids. Readers liked it. Readers know what they like and once given the option of having Bruce the father of five, you can protest all you want as theĀ āofficialā overseers of Batman, but you canāt erase what was already written, and you canāt ask readers to forget they liked something better than how youāre currently trying to push it.
But thatās just me being like hey DC what if you werenāt a flock of fucking dumbasses, just to try something different for a change.
And related to your ask, thereās absolutely a direct correlation in my mind between the DC writers who intensely dislike the idea of Bruce as a father and writing him as being callous, insensitive, aloof and outright abusive with various of his kids. Because it all goes hand in hand with them - they dislike the idea of Bruce as a dad because theyāre all about him being the brooding lone wolf whose entire life is just an endless pursuit of justice for the sake of others because heās convinced himself that he can never be happy and shouldnāt try. YAWN. But this view of Bruce is outright threatened by the warm, caring father Bruce rendition, so they try and erode the latter as much as possible in pursuit of the former....
Only to later have writers revert to the latter and erode the former.
And around and around and around we go. And they all keep trying to reset things that fundamentally CAN NOT BE RESET because this is the problem when you staff a creative industry top to bottom with fanboys who canāt and wonāt separate their personal desires from their professional shepherding of these IPs. And so each new crop of writers tries to write Batman and related characters the way they like them, most often the way they remembered reading them as kids through the lens filter of nostalgia, and thus Bruceās kidsā status flip flops either officially or unofficially every five to ten years, Hal Jordan is replaced by Kyle Rayner is replaced by Hal Jordan and a wave of new diverse characters are created in the span of a couple years and ten years later no oneās heard of any of them except for Jaime Reyes.
And its the reason IMO that superhero comics have never grown beyond a niche industry despite the VAST appeal of superheroes that superhero movies have proven still exists....and its why superhero movies will end up in the exact same stagnated niche if they donāt learn from the formerās mistake and let their characters grow and age and be replaced by new ones rather than just rebooted versions of the old one, because thereās only so many times you can go round and round on the merry go round before people just flat out stop caring because youāre not doing or saying anything new.
Change is good, except for when people refuse to let it happen because theyāve settled for what they know as being the optimal plateau, never to truly be reached past because the unknown and untested is scary and might bite.
Anyway. All of that is to say yes, I agree, and as a PS I just have to froth at the mouth a little on a personal note because god do I hate the interpretation that Bruce and Dick are more like brothers than father and son, lololol, and canāt refrain from mentioning that any time its brought up even in passing.Ā
(This is totally not directed at you btw, just the concept itself, lololol, sorry).Ā
People can talk about the smaller age gap between them all they want, but the fact of the matter is, Dick isnāt Damian, and the relationship between Dick and Bruce has NEVER been nearly as ambiguous or as open to interpretation as the one between Dick and Damian.
Because the contrast between the two is Bruce had something that nobody who is just an older sibling has over a younger....absolute uncontested parental authority, total responsibility for his education, living arrangements, emotional development, etc....with no other comparable figure in the youngerās life occupying a same or even similar role. Dick occupied that role for Damian for about a year of his life, but Bruce has occupied that role for Dick every single year since his first parents died. It might have taken awhile for them to individually and together VIEW their dynamic as parent and child, but from the moment Dick stepped foot into Wayne Manor, Bruce started out day one as someone who stepped into the role of sole guardian and caretaker with no prior emotional attachment.....and that just is NOT a sibling. Thatās a legal guardian or parent.
(And yes, Alfred was there of course, but despite being viewed as a father figure to Bruce himself, Alfred never ever ever once has been shown to occupy an equal position to Bruce in Dickās life....heās very firmly slotted into the grandfather role himself, and has never stepped forward to definitively intercede between the two of them or usurp or even truly challenge Bruceās parental authority of Dick).
If people want to say that at times Dick and Bruceās dynamic has been more relaxed and theyāve related to each other as more like siblings than parent and child due to the relatively small age gap between them (still well over a decade, like yeah Bruce would have had to have been fourteen or so to have Dick himself, but the point is he DIDNāT, and he was already completely done with education and globe-trotting and was firmly established in his life and lifeās purpose by the time he became Dickās guardian, so the small age gap is not quite as influential as I think some people try to make it out to be - the reality is the Bruce that Dick met as a child couldnāt be any more decisively in theĀ āadult/equivalent of a parentā category in Dickās eyes if he were five years older....it wouldnāt have changed a single thing about their actual situation or the positioning of their dynamic.)
But anyway, my point just being that yeah, due to the relatively small age gap between them, I can see people making a case for them at times enjoying a more relaxed camaraderie more akin to brothers than father and son, but the part thatās a pet peeve is when people try and outright replace the idea of them having a father/son dynamic with one where theyāre brothers and partners and equals because.....no. Bruce always had full authority and guardianship of Dick from the day he met him, and heās never been anyone BUT the figure who occupies that role in Dickās mind, no matter whether the name for that changed over time. And thatās not a sibling, because even siblings who end up raising their younger siblings after the death of their parents, say....except for extreme cases like Dick and Damian, they usually still already have prior connection and perceptions of each other....like the younger, if already Dickās age when raised by someone Bruceās age....like, if they were siblings and Bruce ended up raising Dick himself, Dick would still have an image in his mind of a time before their mutual parents died, before he shifted into that parent role....and thus thereād be some ambiguity.Ā
But like I said, Bruce always (and without exception or alternative) from day one existed as the one responsible for Dickās care, the one responsible for raising him, the one who got the ultimate say in every aspect of his life from education to what he ate to whether he could go hang out with his friends...and call that whatever you want, but thatās a parent. Not an older brother.
And more importantly, that dynamic between parent and child, rather than between older and younger sibling, is never going to fully shift into true equals. Thereās a degree to which our parents will always be our parents and exist on a different footing than us in our mutual perspectives. Thereās no getting around that. And Dick will never ever be positioned to be Bruceās brother-figure rather than his son. Never someone who can challenge Bruce on ACTUAL equal footing rather than always with the vestiges ofĀ āthis is the man who raised meā andĀ āI raised this manā hanging over them.Ā
Anyway, like I said, pet peeve, and I always get a little grrr about people suggesting theyāre more brother and brother than father and son because its disingenuous in my mind....thereās never been any kind of reality to it. And more importantly, its one of those things that only really seems to serve one purpose - and thatās to lessen Bruceās responsibility to Dick, because if theyāre just brothers, then the times when Bruce has done less than stellar as his parent, letās say - like, those arenāt as big a deal or big a failing or an injustice to Dick if Bruce is JUST his brother and not actually his father and thus not actually responsible for filling that role.
Its the exact flip side of why I argue that its shitty to heap the kind of expectations on Dick that fandom usually does....because heās NOT Damianās father or any of his siblings.....but the key point I always bring up there is that this is more than just a matter of labels, but rather due to the fact that someone with significantly more and undeniable parental authority than Dick exists for all of his siblings....Bruce himself.
And thatās why Dick will never truly be Bruceās equal within the family rather than his son - he doesnāt carry equivalent power even if equivalent expectations or responsibilities are heaped on him. And thatās why Bruce will never truly be Dickās equal rather than his parent - because from day one, he DID carry sole parental power and responsibility for Dick. And thereās no getting around that and no changing that.....unless you CLAIM that Bruce isĀ ājustā Dickās brother DESPITE all the evidence of him being the only parent Dickās had since he was eight years old.
And the other thing that bugs about the Bruce is more Dickās brother than parent thing....even if Alfred has never officially been designated Bruceās father, thereās never been any doubt that they are far more a parent/child dynamic than an older brother/younger brother. And all of Dickās siblings have unequivocally been interpreted as Bruceās children.
So.....
According to the Bruce is more Dickās brother than parent argument, Dick is the one and only member of the Batfamily who just....doesnāt get to have a parent figure after he loses his parents at age eight? He never needs or wants one after that point? Bruce is more kinda just his brother and partner and Dick wants it this way, because he loved his parents, and so the eight years he got with them was all the parental love and guidance he needed, he was all set, no need or desire for any more after that point, because thatās how it works, apparently, if you love your parents and they die while youāre still a kid, sorry but you canāt have new ones? You can have a guardian but not another parent, you already filled theĀ āI had parents who loved meā quota so whether you only got eight years with them or eighteen, thatās all folks, but its okay because its not like youād even want parents again if you had even just eight years with ones already?
LOLOL.
Yeah.Ā
DISLIKE.

Albums of 2019/the decade
(āMartin Brennanā appearing onĀ This Time with Alan Partridge, my favourite TV programme of 2019.)
Itās impossible to make an album of the year list because I havenāt listened to every album that was released this year. And to make an album of the decade listā¦? Well, thatās even impossibler.
I suppose I could try to do what James Acaster did in his book Perfect Sound Whatever, but instead of listening to every album from 2016 I could attempt to listen to every album from the entire decade. A Sisyphean task ā and by the time Iād listened to all of those albums, it would probably be around 2030. And by that point, providing the world is still functioning by then, Iād have another decade of albums to catch up on. I could draw a comparison to Tristram Shandy here but I wonāt.Ā
(PlumeĀ is my favourite novel of the year.)
(āDNA.ā is the most thrilling three minutes of music this decade.)
The excellent thing about Acasterās book is that it glories in the fact that beneath all the hype and buzz of big releases, and away from algorithmic playlists and ubiquitous albums of the year, there is a universe of incredibly diverse and exciting music being made all the time. Acaster rightly celebrates bandcamp, which has become something like the anti-Spotify over the last ten years. Thanks to bandcamp, it feels like there has never been a better time to listen to experimental music. Obscurity no longer exists ā there is no longer any music which is difficult to hear.Ā
Iāve become enamoured with Jim OāRourkeās SteamroomĀ page, where he regularly releases albums of ambient/noise music. if youāre expecting the Bacharach-esque chamber-pop of his Drag City albums then Iām afraid youāll be disappointed.Ā Thereās a fantastic interview with him here where he describes his creative processĀ (Iām a particular fan of Number 44).
It feels like the prevalence and dominance of the internet has brought with it a certain kind of musical freedom. Thereās a kind of the-music-industry-has-collapsed-so-does-anything-really-matter-anymore attitude which I love! Dean BluntāsĀ Black MetalĀ (2014) feels like an album that couldnāt have been made at any other time. An āanything goesā album of hip-hop/indie/experimental/weirdness that breaks so many production rules (samples of badly compressed MP3s, levels clipping all over the place) but sounds all the better for it.
Of course the problem with everything being available at the click of a button is that you get overwhelmed with choice. I think this decade I got something like cultural fatigue. I'm pretty sure Tim Heidecker and Gregg Turkingtonās endlessly meta online show On Cinema should be my favourite thing ever, but I canāt be bothered to watch all one hundred hours of it. And you canāt dip into it because the joke is that it only really works if you watch all one hundred hours of it. Being told to stick with things because theyāll get better in the fifth seriesā¦? Can I not just watch Masterchef and have a lie down?Ā
(I played the Olympia in Paris with Yann Tiersen in 2014!)
The other problem with making ābest ofā lists is: do you choose albums because you love them or because of their cultural importance? Clearly the best album of the decade culturally was Kendrick LamarāsĀ To Pimp a Butterfly ā an actual soundtrack to a civil rights movement, an album of astonishing power and viscerality. Itās a dense, difficult album full of brilliant songs.Ā But youāre not always going to be in the mood to listen to it.Ā Youāre not always going to be in the mood to be challenged, or to be saddened that an album like that needed to be made!Ā
Or should your album of the decade be the album you listened to the most? This would probably make sense since Spotify has taken over our listening habits and now insists on sending us our most played songs of the year, a cruel reflection of our exposed ids (for a Velvet Underground fan, I really listen to a lot of Bastille). Well, if we went by what Spotify suggested, one of the most successful artists of the decade would beĀ āambient rain noiseā.
I believe that the truth is between. Some albums on my list I have listened to almost constantly, others I have only listened to once or twice, but they blew my head clean off when I did (YeezusĀ for example).
(My most played album of the decade was BenoĆ®t Pioulardās Stanza I-III, released in three parts throughout 2015-6, probably because I listen to it most evenings to help me fall asleep. Beautiful melodic ambient drones, drenched in reverb and tape hiss. Erā¦ just a bit!)
(I got to the finals of So You Think Youāre Funny in 2017!)
While putting together this list, I thought Iād go back to the albums of the 00s list I wrote in 2009. Deerhoof aside, I kind of got snow blindness from reading it! Significantly, I didnāt even notice at the time that my list was made up almost entirely of white artists. Well, I do listen to a lot of morose indie, a genre not famed for its diversity. But this decade I feel that I have expanded my listening habits, and this should be reflected in my list. I hope it doesnāt look like when Rolling StoneĀ do their best albums of all time and put Whatās Going On in the top ten as a kind of afterthought (not even Marvin Gayeās best album).
Who gives a hoot what I think, this is just a blogpost, itās not like Iām writing for a major newspaper (although I do need a job if anyoneās reading this), but I think that, even on this platform, this is a really important albeit difficult thing to consider. If this decade is to be remembered for anything itās that we all have a responsibility to promote diversity in our every action; the 2010s were a decade when the personal became political. It was the decade when it became prudent and necessary to notice things like the fact that I posted a list of my favourite albums and they were all made by white artists, even if itās on a blogpost that no one reads.
Itās not just racist language and behaviour that must be challenged, we must also challenge the social subliminality and structuralism of racism. So yes, a best of the decade list with only white artists, that is part of the problem! Yes, maybe those were my favourite albums of the 00s, but to use a term that has become increasingly prominent this decade, we need to think of the optics.Ā
Arenāt you overthinking this? Tying yourself in knots to sound woke? Well, voice in my head, you sound like a bit of a twat, as does anyone who uses the word āwokeā pejoratively.Ā
Canāt you just list your favourite albums? Yes. But my point is: no conversation about culture takes place in a vacuum. Take Mark Kozelek, who topped my list last decade. Would I feel comfortable having him in my list this decade because of his appalling treatment of the excellent journalist Laura Snapes?Ā Not that this would be an issue this decade because of the startling decline in Kozelekās music. Who could have predicted that Kozelek would go from singing about love and grief with such incredible poignancy to mumble-rapping about buying furniture? (I have written at length about Mark Kozelek before.)
Anyway, I think the terrible state of the world has really affected my listening habits. Basically, life is horrible so I got into ambient music. Turning off the news and drifting off into a hypnogogic daze. What a luxury!Ā
(From the opening sequence of Midsommar, my favourite film of the year. The murals were created by conceptual designer Ragnar Persson and art director Nille Svensson.)
This is the decade when I no longer collected music ā as I switched from downloading from iTunes and buying CDs to streaming it felt like I went from active to passive. It was a decade where music became part of the background ā Spotify playlists were engineered to be as bland and un-skippable as possible. So itās been refreshing to see artists challenge this monotony:Ā Michael Kiwanukaās dense, conceptual KIWANUKAĀ from this year, and Beyonceās thrilling video albums.Ā
(Do you ever listen to something like Otis Redding singingĀ āTry a Little Tendernessā and almost find it hard to believe that that really happened? That it was ever possible for someone so talented and charismatic to ever walk the earth? I got a similar feeling when I watched Homecoming. How lucky we are to have an artist like BeyoncĆ©!)
(I played Green Man Festival in 2012 with Yann and, because Van Morrison wanted to go on first so he could get away early in his helicopter, we played after him on the main stage. So I can sort of say that Van Morrison supported me.)
(How dreadful to lose Mark Hollis and Scott Walker ā and Neil Innes āĀ this year. Whenever I have ten minutes to spare, if Iām waiting for a bus or something, I like to listen toĀ āAfter the Floodā. Ten minutes of transcendence!)
(My favourite tweet of the decade.)
(A personal highlight of the decade for me was filling in at a gig at the 9.30 Club in Washington DC by playing āLady in RedāĀ when Yann broke a violin string.)
Some specific musical highlights of the decade:
āSscendingā, an extremely blissed out track byĀ Acronym w/Korridor.Ā Ā
How good wasĀ āVideo Gamesā? I mean really.
The production on this Nicki Minaj song is utterly fantastic.
I love the lyrically virtuosicĀ Villagers songĀ āEarthly Pleasureā.
āWorkā.
Anyway, Iām going to end this by quoting from one of my favourite songs of the decade, and like some dreadful character from a 00s pre-mumblecore indie romcom, itās by The Shins.Ā
Loveās such a delicate thing that we doĀ With nothing to prove Which I never knewĀ

free writing idea. as much as tims a great guy all his character traits are mostly just shared with the rest of the batfam. stephs character is criminally underused the only real stories involving her are she isn't up to par so batman kicks her out > she keeps heroing anyway > disaster. a (in my opinion great) solution to these problems would be to have stephs pregnancy go all the way through and they have to raise a kid. what do you think?
It could be a pretty interesting AU, especially as (if memory serves me right) Tim was only 14 and Steph 15 when she gave birth.Because of their ages, a big part of that arc would be about asking for help and relying on others because thereās no way in hell either of them were parent material at that moment in comic book continuity. I think Tim would put a lot of effort into hiding the fact that heās part-time fathering from the rest of the Batfam (for fear theyād ask him to stop being Robin because this was a time where he didnāt have much confidence in his place in the family and where Bruce was very emotionally distant and strictly professional) and ultimately (but only after months) confide in YJ (I donāt think he was in the Titans yet) and then maybe Dick and even later Alfred. In the meantime, theyād probably rely heavily on Stephās mother, since Steph falling pregnant was the time where Crystal started trying to become a good mother again. (Maybe eventually Jack and Dana find about it and help out as well?)I could definitely see this as slowly becoming their generationās mission to take care of the kid. Kon would probably freak out a little at first but I think Cassie and Bart would take to it pretty quickly. Like, in this AU Steph would actually become integrated into the YJ/2nd gen of Titans group as opposed to the slight animosity they have between them in the canon comics.
Steph showed a lot of maturity during her pregnancy in canon, especially with her decision of giving away the baby at the end. Since she wouldnāt have done that in this AU, she and Tim would have to develop quite the responsible edge during the first few months after birth instead, and start thinking like adults earlier on. Iām not sure sheād want to continue being Spoiler unless she was somehow taunted or challenged into doing so.Ā
The baby would be Stephās responsibility more than Timās no matter how close they got. I mean Timās already torn between the Batfam, his own parents and YJ/the Titans and I hardly see him as the type to commit 100% to it when heās already shouldering so much responsibility. He really cares about Steph but heās always compartmentalized his life in neat, clearly defined cubes.
When Bruce finds out heād probably be really pissed cause it was hell of irresponsible of Tim to hide that from his guardians and to continue being Robin without letting anyone know about that extra bit of info. For once Babs would definitely side with him, and she wouldnāt have let Steph ever join/intern with the BoP. There would be a bit of drama over Tim and Steph wanting to help the family in some ways and the whole family giving them theĀ āyou wanted a pet you take care of itā speech baby-version. Idk, I just feel like both of them should eventually get a heavy backlash for deciding to raise the baby because honestly if they do decide to keep the baby, itās a bit... selfish? I mean canon Steph gave it away cause she wanted the baby to be happy, and it is true that her situation is pretty shaky at that point in canon. I could see it happen because it was at a stage where they were still growing and maturing and they could make mistakes, but I donāt think it should be portrayed as a particularly stellar decision.
Sorry for ranting, I love thinking about AUs xD, it would definitely be a fun idea to develop further!
I have to disagree about Timās character being everyone elseās traits, though, and Steph being criminally underused (in the 90s and 2000s at least, post-flashpoint your statement would be quite right on every level). Iāve always found their arcs, their growth and their relationships with the rest of the batfam to be the most interesting among the 90s and 2000s Bat-comics. But I suppose that is a matter of opinion, and if I get started on that I will never finish so for both our sakeās Iāll stop there.
In anyways, it would be great if DC remembered the whole Steph has a child thing! Thank you for bringing it up :D

Tagged by @wisegirlandseaweedbrainforever! Thanks Bri!! šš
Ten Questions (and heads up, these are the same questions I'm also asking because I enjoyed this particular set so much)
1. What sense, besides sight, do you most incorporate into your descriptions?
A: Oh, um...sight is kind of my crutch, I use touch and sound pretty equally. Honestly I think I use the "sixth sense" or intuition/abstract feeling most.Ā
2. Do you have a main source of inspiration for your WIP?
A: @hobbitsetal and @thisbibliomaniac are my sources
3. Which developmental rabbit hole do you fall down most often; character backgrounds or worldbuilding?
A: Mmm...for others, it's worldbuilding. For me...character development? I'm not too great at either for myself, honestly. Working with others is much easier for me.
4. What, if any, extra tidbits do you like to see from authors, ie. character profiles, maps + art, folklore, etc?
A: Folklore and art! <---- what Bri said! And maps. I like maps. Can't draw them but I like them.Ā
5. Is there any part of writing that you find more challenging than the rest?
A: Smothering the doubt and just doing it.Ā
6. If you could be immediately fluent in any language other than your own, which would you choose?
A: Tough question! Hm...French, Celtic, or some Scandinavian/Slavic language...
7. If you could re-write any characterās arc from any fiction book, whose would you change?
A: Damian WayneĀ
8. How?
(okay hold onto your socks I've been wanting to fix this since forever)Ā
A: First of all, I would take the date-rape conception and grown in an artificial womb out of the entire picture (seriously, wtf?) I wouldn't make Talia evil, just extremely screwed up and believing she's doing what's right (making him strong, making sure he stays alive). I would use the old incarnation from the 80s, Talia and Bruce get married then divorced and Talia never tells Bruce about his son. I wouldn't have killed Nyssa so early, and I would have used her as the "big bad." Because she'll be after Ra's (for good reason) and then after Ra's is eliminated, she wants the al Ghul empire rooted and burned out. Talia is part of that empire, but furthermore her son is the heir. So she'd stick by close, work within Nyssa's clutches and try to stage a coup. It almost works, but Nyssa outmaneuvers Talia and then kills Damian. No clones, no world domination. Damian would have gone to his father a little earlier, maybe 8 or 9. Talia would have sent him due to those in the League almost killing him, or because Ra's plans are mortally dangerous for Damian--all the while Nyssa is gaining and offering power. So "I'm sending you to your dad to get more training" makes a little more sense. She's secreting him away to stay safe, because she knows that this will be a war he won't survive. Damian's case of being emotionally crippled and abused would be actually addressed in my canon. Furthermore, Bruce's relationship with Damian would reflect his past, Talia's past, and Bruce's relationship with his children (as well as Thomas and Martha AND AlfredāsĀ relationship with Bruce). Bruce going missing in time would be devastating for everyone, because at this point Damian has had a year or so with him and forged a bond. Dick and Talia would actually have to work together, and Dick would fulfill the same role as he did in original canon. Cass would never have gone to Hong Kong or been brainwashed or whatever. This would be the time Jason would actually come back into the fold, because it's either they get along or Gotham falls. And we don't want Gotham to fall. The actual source of strife would be Tim, who refuses to believe Bruce is dead and basically runs away to find him. Being now the one of the world's greatest detectives, he hides himself to the point where his siblings can't find him. And he does work with Ra's. He does escape/gets saved, and Ra's actually is killed by Nyssa shortly after. Bruce comes back and everyone has to reconcile how they've changed and how to actually work with each other now. They would actually really consolidate and become the "Batfamily" and work on whipping Gotham into shape. Because see, we can still have conflict and drama WITHIN the family (such as Jason and Bruce trying to accept each other as adults, because that never happened) and OUTSIDE the family (Joker still running around, as well as many other villains and corruption). Pluuuuus the people of Gotham getting mighty sick of it all, and actually expressing violence against these villains any way they can, leading to the question: just whose side are these vigilantes on? Finally Nyssa and the remnants of the League (those who still need to wreak vengeance for all that was stolen from them BY the League and cronies who simply accept Nyssa as the new Head) attack Gotham and kill Damian. I'll stop now because thereās so much more to itĀ but Iām going to obsess over tiny details people don't care about š Anyways, that's what I would do!Ā
9. Why?
A: Because I think my version is better š And because I think the characters/world deserve better development and better long-ended storylines. Don't be a coward, DC. Hire me.Ā
10. What are the first three words you associate with āgreenā?
A: Verdant. Earth. Eyes.
I tag @hobbitsetal @thelittleredheadedmusician @bambis-baby @theroamingwriter @preciousthingsareprecious @audreycritter @thegalacticpope @fandomriderx-1Ā @connanro-chan and if anyone else wants to be tagged, let me know!! This was actually a lot of fun!!Ā

Day 10 Plaid: Itās a Fashion Statement
Disclaimer: Batman and associated characters are the creative property of DC Comics. Warnings: Canon-typical violence & language, Canon character death mentioned, Mild adoption discrimination at the beginning Pairings: CassandraxHarperxStephanie Rating: K+ Synopsis: When itās date night and the club scene is popping in Gotham, one would think that some wardrobe coordination wouldnāt be a bad thing. Obviously those people never dated anyone in the Gotham Girls Gang. Ā CassandraxHarperxStephanie. Sapphic September: Plaid.
A/N: The amazing thing is that I didnāt get to the Gotham Girl Gang sooner lol
Cassandra had never really been to a club before. It sounded intimidating. And possibly at least slightly gross. But she wasnāt exactly sure about either of those either. Maybe she was completely wrong. Maybe it was going to be fun.
She laid on her bed, head hanging over the edge, and sighed, looking at the clothes strewn across all of the floor and furniture and more.
Her room looked like a tornado had gone through her closet, and just perhaps that was the best description of how Cassandra went through the wardrobe Bruce and Alfred bought her.
She waited a moment more, then allowed herself to slip backwards off the bed and roll out onto the floor.
There were only five hours left and Cassandra was already exhausted. At least she had showered for the date tonight. That was a positive. Maybe.
Perhaps it was also possible for Cassandra to not understand much about the whole dating thing either.
With a groan, she rolled over onto her back, laying on the piles of clothes and stared at the ceiling.
Maybe Harper and Stephanie had misspoken. Maybe they were going to a fight club and Cass could wear the biking shorts and sweatshirt she already had on. And punch people.
That was the part of her that she was fairly sure that Harper and Steph liked anyway.
For a good little bit, Cass stayed on the floor, closing her eyes and pretending that she wasnāt nervous about clubbing. That clubbing actually meant getting hit with clubs, which she was almost sure was something more up her alley already. Which made it something of a surprise when there was a knock at her door.
Eyes snapping open, Cass glanced toward the door. She tried to remember the word that Tim used to tell her to come on into his room when she knocked, but it was escaping her at the moment.
So instead she settled on, āHere!ā
The door opened and Cass felt herself immediately brighten up at the sight of Kate ā Batwoman ā on the other side. She smiled at Cass and pushed the door on open before walking in.
āHey, Alfred warned me you had a big night tonight,ā Kate said, looking around the disaster zone of a room. āHm. He failed to warn me that you picked a fight with a tailor.ā
Cass spun herself around to sit up on her pile of clothes rather than be sprawled out like a child. She frowned a bit at Kateās words and just spoke honestly. āIā¦ donāt know how toā¦ā she rotated her hand as if it were supposed to mean something that her words were failing her on. She glanced off, scowling at the adjacent wall in concentrated thought. āHow toā¦ beā¦ā
āFashionable?ā Kate joked, pulling up a seat from the desk in the corner of the room.
āHow to beā¦ girl withā¦ girls? Dating?ā Cass clarified. She looked to Kate. āHow to club? With girls?ā
Kate blinked a few times before laughing. āWell, typically I tell people to get used to playing pool and leather jackets.ā
Putting a hand to her chin, Cass hummed to herself in thought. āYesā¦ā
āOkay, no more sarcasm,ā Kate laughed, leaning over and grabbing some of the clothes from the floor. āYouāre worried about what exactly with this date? I thought Alfred said you already have dates.ā
āYes,ā Cass nodded.
āOkayā¦ Well, I hate to tell you, Cassie, because I know you adore a challenge, but you already did the hardest part of being a lesbian in Gotham City,ā Kate explained. āIn fact, youāre actually ahead of the curve. I kinda want to fight you for gay dominance.ā
Perking up, Cass put up her fists. āCan do that!ā
āSarcasm,ā Kate quickly corrected.
āMineās not,ā Cass replied.
Kate hummed in amusement before gathering some more of Cassā clothes. āDo you want to wear shorts tonight? Itāll be pretty hot.ā
Cassandra looked down to her legs and frowned to herself. Like most of the rest of her body, scars and pockmarks from her years with Cain and with Mother left their tell-tale signs. It was not something she saw on other girls.
āNo,ā she finally answered.
āI think you look cute in shorts, but if you want, weāll make one of these pairs of skinny jeans work ā oh, love these boots,ā Kate replied distractedly as she rummaged more. āIām thinking heavy eyeliner. Do you have any band shirts?ā
When Kate looked up, Cass could only blink back at her before smiling and shrugging.
Kate grabbed some clothes from underneath Cassā pile and yanked them free despite Cassandraās impeccable balance. āOkay, itās official, Iām going to handle your everything this one time and get you ready to walk in confident, ready, and kicking ass.ā
Smiling widely, Cass nodded. āLesbian ass!ā
āHoney, you already have that slain,ā Kate assured her.
Cassandra stepped out of the black Mercedes that Alfred had drove her in with her toes turned in, attempting to offset the strangeness of wearing the high heeled boots that Kate had chosen for her. She gave Alfred a nervous look and he nodded to her before she took a deep breath and completed walking out of the car.
She was wearing a black shirt with fancy, loopy white writing on it. It was a band shirt, according to Kate.
Kate also had told her the name of the band and what to say her favorite song from them was if people asked but Cassandra had forgotten it already in between the thick smattering of dark and sparkly makeup ad the sticky way her crimped hair felt after being yanked and pulled and styled to Kateās approval.
Pouting her lips out, Cass did remember that the black lipstick was supposed to get on her teeth and she was supposed to stop from letting that happen. And instead she used her tongue to roll across the front of her teeth repeatedly.
Hanging off her shoulders, ripped but according to Kate not ripped in the way of the sweat pants Bruce made her throw out, to show off her biceps and rolled up her forearm was an open plaid shirt that Kate informed her really completed the outfit. It was supposed to be in, whatever that meant.
It made Cass feel awkward for sure, and as she stood on the sidewalk nervously, being looked over by passing strangers, she began to think a mistake had been made until there was a surprised sound.
āCassandra!?ā Stephās voice rang out.
Excited, Cass turned immediately to meet her. Then Cassandraās smile only grew as she saw both Harper and Stephanie walking toward her.
Stephanie was in heels and the kind of torn shorts that Cass had rejected ā but they looked good on her, Cass was glad to see them on someone else ā and was wearing her hair curled and half back. Her makeup was similarly dark but even more sparkly, especially the purple eyeshadow. She had a purple plaid shirt, sleeves rolled up to her elbow, that also had a hood. Cass could not have been more envious of that hood.
Harper was in her signature converse shoes, baggier pants than Cass or Steph, but with holes. Cass supposed those holes were also different from the sweat pants holes. Harper wasnāt wearing much makeup, but her piercings were changed out for new ones and she similarly wore a black shirt with fancy, though different, writing and a blue plaid shirt hanging loosely open over it.
The three girls looked at each other.
Cass happily clapped her hands. āWe match!ā
āWe look like complete dorks!ā Steph snorted, throwing her head back in laughter.
āHey, you two speak for yourselves. Iāve been rocking this look every day of my life long before I met either of you. And I donāt play around with softening my butch,ā Harper joked, fluffing up her shirt collar. āBut yeah. I guess we all have the same definition of clubbing from the looks of it.ā
āI have no idea what weāre doing tonight actually,ā Steph laughed. āI just tried to dress for what I thought you two thought was cool.ā
They then looked to Cass.
āKate,ā she said simply enough.
Both nodded sagely in understanding of what saying their mentorās name meant.
āExplains why you look better than either of us,ā Steph laughed.
āWe all look the same,ā Cass argued.
āLadies, ladies,ā Harper joked, wrapping her arms around their shoulders as she hung between them. āWeāre all beautiful. Now. Letās try to act like we know how to have a good time!ā
Cassandra laughed with her girlfriends, certain that there was no better start to a fun night.

Anonymous said: Fake-Dick death angst headcanons? Sorry if you already did this tho
*finger guns*
Thereās also some in here and a couple fics over here :)
Anonymous said: I want to start reading the comics where Damian first appeared. Do you know which comic that would be? Thank you!
Sure thing! Thatād be Batman and Son (2006),Ā Batman #655-658. After that itās The Resurrection of Raās al Ghul.
@macko-99 said: Amy was it you who wrote Batman #16? It looks like something you would write. P.S. I hope you're having a great day. āŗ
Lmao yeah it does kinda remind me of this one. I think most of us have written a restaurant fic or two in out time, but it was interesting to see it in canon. I wish I really could claim credit for it, mostly because that would mean I have a job (@DC please hire me. I donāt have a job. Catch me while you can)
And thank you, my day is going pretty well so far <3
Anonymous said: WHY ISNT DEXTER SOY THE ARTIST FOR RHATO REBIRTH ANYMORE?!?!???!?!??!!? HIS STYLE IS BEAUTIFULLLL!!!!!! WILL HE BE BACK??? (srry for the caps...)
Ah well artists move around a fair amount. I think a lot of times they get offered a specific number of issues, and then theyāre out.Iām afraid I donāt know if heāll ever be back
@therobin53 said: If the Batfamily attempted the Krispy Kreme Challenge, who would come out on top (without puking)?
Jeeeeez I had to look that challenge up, and kinda wish I hadnāt, because that sounds awful
Suppose Iād go with Tim or Dick tho
Anonymous said: I love all the Drake Protection Squad fics, but I was wondering how Harper Row would play into them. Would she help Damian and Jason with Tim, or would she be more like Tim (not taking care of herself)? Or do you think she would get involved at all? Anyway, I love all your headcanons, thank you so much for all of them!
Hmmmm sheās got a pretty strong protection instinct and very little regard for what Tim wants her to do, so I reckon sheād be more on Damianās side of things. Problem is, she doesnāt know Damian, so I donāt think sheād ever be in a position to get involved.Ā
Anonymous said: Who's the scariest batboy? Like, who's the one that the others would at least low-key fear if they were villains? Who's the one no one wants to get on the bad side of?
Well on the one hand Jason totally kills people, and the rest of them donāt do that. On the other hand, Dick is scary as hell and I would never cross him ever
Anonymous said: *raises hand* Mother, do you know when Steph learned that Bruce Wayne was Batman?I've been trying to find it, but haven't had any luck so far.
Hm.... that one might be a little up in the air? I can tell you exactly when she found out who Tim was (Robin 87):
At this point, however, Timās birth dad was still alive, and he wasnāt living at Wayne Manor, so knowing about Tim doesnāt definitely mean she knew about Bruce. That impression gets reinforced over here
whereĀ āWho pays for all of this?ā makes it pretty clear she doesnāt know. Worth noting that this panel occurred before the Tim reveal though.
I skimmed through Stephās Robin run and the first bit of War Games, and I couldnāt find any time that she referred to Bruce by his name-- itās alwaysĀ āBatmanā even though she does use Timās first name in her mind. She didnāt know Catwomanās secret identity, and she didnāt know that Matches Malone was one of Bruceās aliases. Bruce always wears his cowl around her. I donāt think we ever get to see her find out?
She died/fake-died at the end of War Games, and she definitely knew by the time she came back. The cowl comes off in Robin 174, but youāll notice she doesn't seem surprised.
After that, she refers to Bruce by name a lot. Itās possible that there is an explicit reveal that Iām missing? But Iāve never seen one
Anonymous said: Have you ever thought about the culture clash that would have happened when dick first showed up? Traveling Romanian āg***yā boy who grew up in a circus with a huge circle of people who counted as family, meets super rich emotionally closed off bachelor whoās literally only had Alfred. Batman probably got along with dick better than bruce did at that point.
Okay Iām.... guessing by the quotation marks that you know that word is a racial slur, but Iām gonna go ahead and star it out anyways.
Beyond that, yeah, I always figured Dick and Alfred got on immediately because of the performer angle. Alfred was a Shakespearean actor, and I reckon that would have felt familiar. I have a fic about it over here
@therobin53 said: Just listening to a playlist full of sneaking music for midnight snacking, and had an image of Alfred cleaning the manor like Christopher Walken in the Weapon of Choice music video. Do you think he does that when the manor is empty?
Pfffft thatās a great image, and I certainly hope he does
@quadpen said: Do you have any opinions on the rhato rebirth?
Hmm not strong ones, I guess. I definitely appreciate the move back to Jasonās post-crisis origin story, but I still donāt trust anything written by Scott Lobdell.
Iāll also say-- and RHATO isnāt the only book guilty of this one-- I donāt like it when Bruceās attitude towards the Red Hood isĀ āwell maybe itās good that thereās someone to do the things Batman wonāt do.ā I consider that kind of tacit endorsement very out of character for Bruce. The fact that Jason kills needs to be a huge problem for him. I can take it when he sort of ignores it and pretends like he doesnāt know whatās going on, but for him to explicitly say yes, this is going on, and I think itās a good thing? Not a fan.
Anonymous said: Imagine Jason and Dick doing that acrobatic maneuver together??? Like??? I need a fanart gif of that
Pretty cool, right?
Anonymous said: I just thought about an au where Cass is a dancer because it's an awesome way to express herself without needing words and I'm :') idk i just felt like sharing I guess??? Sorry for bothering you
Cute!
Anonymous said: When you get this, please respond with five things that make you happy. Then send to the last ten people in your notifications anonymously. (āæā¹ā”ā¹)
Hm post offices, chocolate cake, anything that glows in the dark, spoons, straight lines
Anonymous said: Hi I'm here for the ace in the hole project how do I sign up
Greetings, new applicant! Due to the wide-scale success of our program, we have moved into a localized recruitment model. If you are still interested in joining our organization, please contact your local office with your completed application and schedule. Snacks are provided. Thank you for your interest!
Anonymous said: Hi! First off, I want to say that I love your blog and all your headcanons. They're seriously the best. Do you have any more songs for the different members of the batfamily/bat-affiliates, especially unusual characters like Harper Row or Maps? Thank you for your time!
Oh hm I always forget which songs I posted, so bear with me if there are any repeats here. I donāt actively search for this kind of thing, so all I can give you are the ones that I already associate with characters... which means nobody unusual. Sorry bout that
Laura Palmer (Bastille): Jason
21st Century Breakdown (Green Day): Tim as Robin
Great Big Storm (Nate Ruess): Dick
Wait For It (Hamilton Soundtrack): Tim
Gaviās Song (Lindsey Stirling): Damian
Alone Together (Fallout Boy): Jason
Drown (Seafret): Tim
I Still Havenāt Found What Iām Looking For (either the U2 version or Peter Hollens/Sabrina Carpenter): Stephanie
Thereās a certain kind of music that always reminds me of Dick for some reason, and these are all it:
The Parting Glass (Peter Hollens)
Happiness (Needtobreathe)
Hallelujah (Pentatonix)
Also just because you specifically asked about Maps, the first song I think about is My Eyes from Doctor Horribleās Singalong Blog. Donāt ask me why. Seems like something she would like singing I guess. For Harper itās I Wanna Get Better (Bleachers)
Anonymous said: Sorry you didn't get that job :/ not that a strangers consolation on the internet will do you that much good but i'm sure the next thing you apply for will feel all the better when you get it as a result
Ah it sucked, but Iāll get over it. I suppose Iāll start applying to law schools now :/
What are things/concepts/aesthetics you associate with me?
Anonymous said: For things I associate with you? I often think about you in relation to family, because of the great things you say about yours, and the lovely stories you write about the batfam. Also the colors red, green, and yellow, because duh
Ohhhh thatās good that makes me very happy
@accidentallyhopeful said: I associate you with warm hot chocolate, the smell of old books, and pens that have spilled ink everywhere
ā¤ļø ā¤ļø ā¤ļø thank you
Anonymous said: aesthetic- rain and freshly sharpened pencils
Oh I like that yes I do
@inkdropfox said: southern accents, sweet tea, cheeseburgers, surprise presents, history, damian wayne, batfamily, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, and the (ąø ā¢Ģ_ā¢Ģ)ąø emoji
GOOD
You never did get back to me on the sweet tea thing, did you? Iām guessing that means you didn't like it. Outrageous. Heretical. Unacceptable.Ā
Anonymous said: batfamily, angst, and jail.
