I’ve been obsessed with the Hadestown musical recently, and last night while trying to fall asleep I had Wait For Me playing, and for some reason, my brain started combining it with the life series. The thought wouldn’t leave me alone, so I grabbed my computer and an hour later had this typed out. Enjoy the chaos of watching me slowly descend into madness and realize that this might not work as well as I wanted it to, but at that point, I was committed, so I just kept typing and ended up with this. This is directly copied and pasted from the Google Doc I created last night at 10 o’clock when I was supposed to be asleep lol

Joel as Orpheus and Lizzie as Eurydice (this is non-negotiable).

Grian or Scar as Hermes? Grian could be Hermes because Hermes is the narrator of Hadestown, and Grian is the founder of the life series. But Scar would be a good Hermes because of his scamming tendencies and general personality.

Ranchers as Hades and Persephone? Cause I feel like Tango fits Hades’ industrial vibe, and Jimmy could be a good Persephone character. Also, I just like this ship.

Another possible Hades and Persephone pairing is Etho and Bdubs. Etho, because of the redstone and also his very mysterious vibe. Bdubs because he’s covered in moss and idk just has kinda the same vibe as Persephone. Both relationships bounce between healthy and adorable to kinda toxic. Could provide some angst? Probably influenced by that one Hermicraft + PJO AU by @/ahllohehn tbh because their parents are Hades and Demeter in that, and there’s even a post making a joke about how their relationship in that could be compared to Hades and Persephone.

The Three Gs (Cleo, Scott, and Pearl) as The Fates (also non-negotiable, I love these three so much, and it just fits so well).

Are there even enough characters in Hadestown to fit all the life series characters? Or would a bunch of them just end up being background characters?

Other Redstoner characters could be the workers in Hadestown building the wall. Mumbo, Impulse, wherever Impulse is, Skizz has to be there too, so even though he’s not a redstoner, maybe he’s there to lift the heavy stuff, idk he’s always portrayed as really buff and an angel, so I’ve decided he gets to be dead with his friends, and then either Tango or Etho, depending on who’s Hades.

What about Martyn? Ren? Gem? BigB? And whoever is left after Hermes and Persephone are chosen. The other Hades would be taken care of by the workers, but what about Grian/Scar and Jimmy/Bdubs?

Fic? How could this be a whole fic? Wouldn’t it just be the story of Hadestown, but change the names? Can’t change the story much, the whole point of Hadestown is that the story is a tragedy, and Hermes knows this, but he keeps telling the story anyway.

Drawings? I don’t have the art talent for that. I still have the sketchbook app on my iPad, I could probably try to figure it out. Tracing?

i keep seeing people complaining abt the blisters and bedrock letter vander wrote to silco. stuff about how it wasn't a good enough apology. it's actually rlly confusing to me bc watching it, i thought it wasn't meant to be an apology?

it kind of mirrors something my friend and i do when one of us is upset about something the other did. we don't get to see each other super often unless we're actively making time to, so we will text that we're sorry and ask to see them in person so we can actually communicate.

vander's letter reminds me of that. reading it, i thought he was trying to get silco to come see him so they could actually talk to each other and he could really apologize. a letter isn't good enough to get your emotions across.

i did a bit of a breakdown of the letter, not sure if it's very good though lol

"I’ve looked everywhere, but it’s clear you don’t want to be found."

he's been looking for silco so he can apologize personally. this isn't his plan a. this is what he has to do bc he can't find silco and he can't apologize the way he wants until silco allows himself to be found.

"God I’m shit at this. I’m sorry. When she died…I lost my head."

he acknowledges this isn't going to sound very good, because again, this wasn't how he wanted to apologize. it's still not how he wants to apologize. he tries to explain himself hoping silco can use it to see where he was coming from and calm down enough to be willing to see him in person.

"I told myself what I did to you was for the greater good, that you deserved it, but the dirt was on both our hands."

he acknowledges he was in the wrong and that his personal justification in that heated moment was flawed. he's saying that originally, he thought silco was the reason for everything that happened, the reason felicia died, but now that he's cleared his head somewhat, he knows it was just as much his fault as silco's.

"Anyways, you know where to find me. Blisters and bedrock. V."

he extends the offer to reach out, knowing he's not going to find silco unless silco wants to be found. he also adds a sentimental touch to it with the blisters and bedrock part, knowing it's symbolic of the relationship they had before what happened and hoping that relationship can be rebuilt.

and as we saw from the au, it could be rebuilt. silco just had to find the letter and decide to meet vander.

honestly i thought this was a rlly nice letter considering i didn't see it as an apology. a letter is never going to be enough to sincerely convey your emotions and really communicate with the other party. it's not like a face-to-face conversation.

i assumed from scenes with vander that he's someone who likes spending time with the people he loves. he likes being at the last drop with the people he cares for, music playing and drinks pouring. it stands to reason that he'd prefer in-person conversation over a letter.

He already didnt want her dating for this reason because it hurts him to see his little girl upset just as much as it hurts her

Plays video games with her if thats what she wants to do, he will do absolutely anything for her

Oh he is PISSED. its an understatement tbh he is absolutely LIVID.

Goes OFF on her ex, saying how they are missing out on such a wonderful, beautiful, caring girl and how they are going to regret it when shes more successful than them

It's embarrassing but she cant help but love every second of it, cherishing how much her dad loves her

Makes her favorite dinner for her after renting/buying her favorite movie and bringing her a million pillows and blankets to make sure shes comfortable

Is angered by the fact someone broke his daughters heart, but he knows there is other people out there for her

More protective over her, not like she dates a lot of people anyway, people are terrified of hisoka and dont wanna be around him

Plays cards with her to keep her distracted and focused on something else, occasionally letting her win to make her happy

Does her makeup for her since she ruined it by crying, being slightly gentle with her

Hey I was the anon asking about joes concert and meeting him, I saw on his tour photographer's ig story the fisherman friends cough drops and was wondering if those were passed out at the concert, also how was the entire concert I'm going to the one on April 10 in Oakland and I'm so excited (this is also my very first concert ever)💖 do you have any tips or advice for the concert

Hey! Sorry for the late reply. First question - The fisherman's friends were part of the vip merch pack, lol.

And the concert as a whole was great!! The opener is very talented and their set was great. Id get to know their music before the concert if you aren't already a fan. I always think its more fun when you can really engage with the opener.

I saw your other question about how long the concert lasts, and the opener started at 8 and DJO ended at 10:30. Honestly, I feel like both went by pretty quickly as neither of them talked alot between songs other than a sentence or two.

Congrats in this being your first concert!! It'll be a fun one!

Advice I have is pretty general for all concert.

- Eat and drink enough water before hand, you don't want to get tired or light headed during the show.

- Dont lock your knees!! I literally cannot tell you how important this is. Almost all "medical events" that happen at concerts are people fainting from locking their knees. Make a conscious effort to bend them, dance around, do high knees, idk whatever you need to do, do it.

- this show in particular has ALOT of strobe lights and fake fog. This might not effect you at all, but keep it in mind if you think it might. Personally I have asthma and sometimes smoke machines will set me off, this show it didn't which is good.

- The show i went to was unseated general admission. I had "VIP" tickets, which really only means we were let into the venue early to buy merch and be closer to the stage. Im unsure what your shows seating situation is, but if it is standing, remeber to be mindful of the people around you. If you're really tall, maybe check in with the people behind you that they can see the stage. Have long hair? Don't wait it in a high bun that makes you taller, stuff like that.

Also, this was an issue at my show, but if you aren't VIP don't bully your way to the front. People who are VIP paid extra to be closer to the stage, if your GA and you want to be close, get there as early as you can that way you can be right behind VIP. At our show a girl, who was arguably very tall, who's friends had VIP tickets but she didn't, pushed her way to the front and then was very rude when the girl behind her told her she couldn't see. Don't be like that, and if people around you are like that, do you best to just ignore it and enjoy the show anyways. People can be frustrating, but that shouldn't ruin your experience.

- again on the fainting thing, if you feel like you may faint. Tell the people around you and try to get out of the crowd if you can. No one is going to be mad, they'd rather you be safe.

- be polite and respectful to the artists, obviously

- im unsure how old you are, but if you're able to drink or smoke, just make sure you aren't like super drunk or high. You may be having a great time, but the people around you might not be. There are definitely concerts to get fucked up at, Id say DJO isn't the one.

- if you are planning to take photos and videos, be mindful of the people around you again. Im someone who takes a ton of pics, but I try to be quick if I want to hold my camera up high and if I can keep my camera lower, like in front of my face, I do that. It can be annoying when the person in front of you has their phone blocking the view the whole time.

Also, don't record/take photos the entire show. It can be tempting to want to capture every moment to look back on, but its alot better to actually watch and enjoy the show im the moment (this coming from someone who took probably 200 pictures :| )

I'm trying to think of anything else :/ I might add to this if I can think of other stuff.

I love talking about my girl, thank you sm :") I actually had an original Ofelia! She was my first Durge, and she was a storm sorceress and followed the canon! She was a lot more chaotic and insane, lol, but the real Ofelia came to be when I was listening to my music in the car! I wanted stuff from our world in the story, but I wasn't sure anyone would like it or if it was too far-fetched for people. But then I came across some fantastic isekai-ish fics (one major inspiration being @preciouslittlebhaalbae who has an amazing fic of their own that everyone should read!!) and I decided I would try! I knew it was gonna happen when I envisioned an electric guitar in Faeren, and so I sat down and, for the first time ever, actually wrote out a story outline which was very loose at the time, and has now developed completely. There's still some filler I need to kind of figure out, and I need to really sit down and actually construct a plan for how to get Astarion and Ofelia from their current "more than friends, less than lovers" status to the confession scene, but I have so much cute stuff planned that I just need to make it all fit like puzzle pieces! I really think you guys will like it! 💖 As for that electric guitar... 😏 Act 3 baybee. I think if the Gondian gnomes can make Steel Watchers, they can figure out an electric guitar with some kind of built-in speaker!!

As for how much of her is me, well, I try to separate her as much as I can from myself, but a lot of her likes and dislikes are in line with me. Unfortunately, I'm also afraid of heights, I do love coffee, and I'm Hispanic, so including a lot of my culture, or at least some of my experiences, is something I really love to do. 💖 I don't see much of it out there, so I like to try and bring it out in little ways when I can 💗 I also have black hair and some facial piercings and stuff, and I also am alt/goth so I'm kinda basing a lot of it on stuff I like which I think really helps me make her feel like a real person. Ofelia is like the best friend I never had in high school! We both also graduated with little experience in love, so that helps me write her too. 😊

Some of my FAVORITE fics lately have been The Melancholy Bard by @andromedaancunin which I highly recommend to anyone!! Getting to see Andromeda and Astarion's story unfold in fic form is a privilege and it's handled with such care and love and I adore it so much 💗

Another favorite is Death & Romance by @bby-bel-art!! I absolutely LOVE their OCs Kell (durge) and Darcy (Earth-Tav), and their struggles adjusting to being abducted by mind flayers and figuring out how to survive has got me enthralled!! I am trying to catch back up to AO3 but I've read past chapter 6 and it's so wonderful and the experiences are so raw and well written- I highly recommend it!!

I have a few!! I am currently working on a GalexReader smut fic that I'm only just now building up the smut in, but I would love to finally get that done soon! @caffeinatedmunchkin has sown the seeds in my brain for months now and I'm finally letting them run wild. Sex pollen? Check. Denial of feelings? Check. Porn with little plot? Check again. I am pleased with what I have written so far, though! I haven't written a reader fic before, so I'm really psyched to give it a try!

As for other wips, I have so many Ofelia and Astarion smut wips, it's kinda shameful. I would like to finally finish one someday, lol, but we'll see. The Act 3 chair fucking one holds a lot of promise, though.

I have so much to say about Heart Worm that I’m not even sure where to begin, so please bear with me, baby.

First of all, I can’t get over the chemistry between Kai and the MC. The way he treats her—it hits me straight in the chest. The fear and doubt the MC feels about ruining their friendship after something shifts between them... It’s so real, so raw.

When I read Kai’s confession—“You don’t get it. You are the music. Every single song is about you. Every single fucking song is about you. I want you to come with me, please. I love you, I have always loved you, and I will always love you, and I thought you’d loved me too, and I don’t want to do this alone. I can’t do it alone." I swear, that moment hit me like a bus. I actually had to stop reading and get up, pacing around my room just to calm down. My heart was racing, and when I read it again, I just... bawled like a freaking baby. I want this tattooed on my body right now. To be loved like that—to have someone so completely, so fiercely, so honestly love you—is a dream.

And then that simple line: “I’ll help you add your stuff to it.” On the surface, it’s just a small thing, but it’s so much more. It’s him offering to take everything—her baggage, her doubts, everything that makes her who she is—and take it with him. That sentence broke me. The weight of it, like he’s promising to carry it all with her... I felt like I couldn’t breathe. I swear, that line added years to my emotional age.

And then, let’s talk about the smut—wow. I’d literally pay to read it. It’s perfect. But beyond the heat, what really stuck with me is how beautifully you write. It’s like I can see it happening right in front of me—the two of them, just starting out in life with barely anything but each other and their old, beaten-up truck. That’s everything. And when they’re leaving that small town, with each other—that’s what soulmates do.

I just want to congratulate you. I can’t even justify how much this story has impacted me. I'm absolutely hooked. You’ve gained a fan in me, without a doubt. You just made my day so, so much better!

i was absolutely also so in love with this pair. i hope it came through in the story. they loved each other for so long and so intrinsically that the world started falling down around them the moment they began to realize that maybe they won’t have each other forever. but of course, fate was always on their side.

THAT LINE. i had to get up after writing it, too. as much as fate helped them, i think that they also had to fight tooth and nail to keep each other. sometimes, the moths/misty apparition would make appearances to say something about the scene and life path that they were on. when MC was with Yeonjun, and he killed that moth, i believe that was it telling her that she was going down the wrong life path. that it wasn’t her purpose, and that they need to follow that urge to fight for each other (cause honestly, she was gaslighting herself hardcore at that point lol) i just love it so much.

and, YES!! you understood that line so deeply. i literally could not be happier. as much as it actually was him telling her that they’re going together now, it was also a promise and pledge to carry it all together. that her worries, and his, aren’t just theirs to deal with alone anymore. sigh.

you put this all beautifully (and also i am blushing at your compliments. :,) ). maybe they have nothing now, but literally all they ever needed was each other. i liked leaving their future very open-ended, but i really do think that MC will go on to do something she loves, and Kai will succeed in his dream. that’s what they deserve. but if they don’t, and those dreams fall on their faces, i think they’ll be okay anyway.

RvB Survey Results Video - Favorite Character Intros

Hello everyone! I know @asphodeldreams will probably be making a post of his own about it since his blog is primarily where we're hosting all of the survey stuff, but I did want to make a particular post about this here since this has been pretty much all I have done for the past couple weeks.

This video is a compilation of all of the answers we received to the question of "Most memorable character introduction?", which we received roughly 259 answers for out of the 308 people who took the survey (full disclosure for transparency, asphodel and I also took the survey and added in our own answers. those numbers are included in the 259/308. answers where someone wrote in multiple intros were split apart and counted for each character submitted. if my math in the video doesn't add up please let me know, i did my best but math and I don't get along very well.)

If you have any questions about why I made a choice I made, or have any other questions / comments / concerns, then feel free to shoot me an ask or comment on this post! I plan on trying to make a few more videos like this for some of the other questions, but with grad school starting up next month my free time is gonna be a bit more spread around, so that will probably be a slow process. This is really more of a bonus, anyways - just something to help people visualize some of the results a bit better, doesn't actually impact when we upload new batches of results. It's also a great way for me to practice my video editing skills so I can feel justified in keeping that on my resume, lol. more detailed information about how i did the tallying / editing is under the read more (what the video refers to as “the description), but I hope y'all enjoy :)

Some characters are shown with just one clip, while others may have multiple. Reasons why some have multiple include, but are not limited to; - Being initially introduced in a mini-series, and providing a main series clip in addition - Re-introductions of the character at a later point - I couldn't find one good clip to use for the video - I really just wanted to use a second clip for that character, lol

So some characters have multiple clips, and some have longer clips because I could not find a good way to cohesively edit certain scenes.

If multiple people suggested the same scene for multiple characters, then for the most part those characters are generally all just lumped in with whoever had the most votes.

When I was initially trying to get it onto YouTube, I made a few editing changes - like putting music under some Season One clips. After giving up on YouTube, I removed all the visual effects I added, but left some of the music because otherwise the scene just sounded really quiet mixed in with everything else, and I had grown rather fond of some of the music spots. Also, I did my best to kind of equalize the audio mixing, but I definitely didn't get it perfect. Shouldn't be anything too surprisingly loud, though.

This took me Way longer to make than I would care to admit, and I had a nightmare of a time trying (and failing) to get it past YouTube Content ID, but it's finally up now and ready for all to see :)

Hobbies.

Peeta and Katniss both have their individual activities - Painting, baking, hunting, writing, music, etc. they’ve, of course, shared each of those with the other but none of those are something they could consistently do together because it’s just not the others jam. But thing is, they want to have a shared activity! That’s where the garden comes in.

Peeta started the garden (unwittingly) when he planted the primroses. They both take care of those flowers with so much love and patience, it was only natural to plant something else eventually.

Now, their house doesn’t have an aesthetic garden - neither of them knows the first thing about landscaping - their garden is all about life and learning and utility.

I’ve always pictured their Victor Village house as a large ornate house on a big plot of land. So, there’s a lot of space in the front and the back. I think their actual garden is in the back of the house, just because I’ve always pictured their kitchen in the back of the house with a door leading right to it, but I might be wrong about that layout. When it comes to houses in books I tend to create an entire layout in my head based on vibes and not the text at all haha. Like I literally have a stronger mental image of their house than of either of their faces lol.

Anyway, the garden is in the back. There’s a homemade scarecrow there, made up entirely of Peeta’s old shirts which have been stitched together and stuffed with hay and leaves.

They grow all kinds of food - they’re those neighbours that always ask if you’d like some tomatoes in the summer ‘cause they’ve got lots! There’s also all kinds of medicinal plants - think of the garden as a natural next step from the plant book.

Sometimes, Katniss teaches her music/daycare class/group of kids about plants via the garden. She does this before taking them into the woods to get them familiar with the shapes and colours they’re going to be looking for. She then tests them in the woods, “who can find me a katniss root?”

I see their garden as natural / not like a farm or a typical garden - like the plants might be in rows (?), sure, but no one is controlling in which direction they grow, nor are they necessarily divided by type. Like when you’re growing rubber, they would plant it in the way that makes most sense for that plant - big distances between each plant (for rubber not for like every plant lol), plus keeping it side-by-side (root wise) with another plant that does well with it, in the case of rubber I cannot remember if that’s corn or sugarcane? It doesn’t matter, you get my point, plus they’re not planting rubber in twelve lol. It’s more like those forest gardens you can sometimes find - the ones indigenous people used to plant back in the day? Along their migration routes? Something like that. I don’t see Katniss valuing some sort of Capitol-imposition looking garden that doesn’t jive with the surrounding environment. She wants something that feels like the woods and looks like it belongs. So it’s all native plants and vegetables, and they’re planted in a way that makes sense for the ecosystem.

My point is that their garden is their shared hobby. They spend a lot of time back there, so much time in fact that Haymitch sometimes drags a chair there to hang out with them too. Peeta set up a hammock between 2 fruit trees (I wanna say plum trees but idk what ppl in Appalachia would grow so ignore me) and is known to fall asleep in it all the time. The first summer they started spending time there Peeta got horribly sunburned so he has a designated hat for being out in the sun (“the Peeta hat” to Katniss and “The Hick Hat” to Haymitch). Katniss teaches Peeta all her food preservation secrets -- Peeta already knew some stuff, it’s not like the bakery didn’t also have to keep a store of food, it’s just that Katniss knows even more things you can do with food — their cellar is filled with everything you can think of, pickled, fermented, even dried. Everything.

When the kids are born it’s a family activity for as long as they’re interested — they grow out of it eventually, choosing to spend their afternoons playing in the street or at a friends house instead — they get a real kick out of planting seeds, picking fruits, yanking out roots, and weeding and checking for bugs. The girl did a whole science project on it once, it was all about the water cycle and the role of plants. Katniss proudly keeps a picture of her and the project on the fridge. It hangs there for the rest of her life.

When they’re elderly they still take care of the garden. The kids hem and haw about their knees, heat stroke, water intake, sinkholes, and the possibility of a sudden and unexpected earthquake. Their worries are soundly ignored. The plants keep growing, the food keeps coming. By this point there’s a number of pet graves (buttercup descendants, a few fish, and an ill-fated bunny that was not killed by the children it was an accident!) When Katniss and Peeta are no longer around, one of their kids keeps the garden going, they keep the house in the family and teach the next generation about what plants are good for eating and which ones are good for healing. Can you believe it?They even have a book!

Three days late <3 anyway. Hi. I assume by tiefling you mean my darling BG3 Tav Constant, though of course I am queer and therefore incapable of not making tieflings; and so I have multiple of them (notably Cécilia the wizard).

But so, for Constant, their opinion on lying, stealing & killing is that it's not generally commendable but sometimes it's acceptable. Before they had to go on an insane adventure, they weren't in very difficult situations, so it was a theoretical discussion, like asking your friends what they would do if xyz. Now, almost at the end of their involuntary quest to save the world, they've lied to people, and stolen stuff, and killed more creatures than even a fair amount of adventurers.

That's a bit of a boring answer though, like "well try not to but if you have to you have to", so I'll say, they tend to be motivated to do things by wanting to create a stable environment for people, especially their loved ones, and curiosity - so I imagine they've lied on smaller stuff to keep the peace in their group of disparate misfits, or let someone (wonder who) steal a magic item they wanted to know more about, that kind of thing. The killing was self defense, because it turns out a lot of stuff wanted to kill them & their friends, and most of them couldn't be talked out of it.

For the other one, I wanted to answer for Solaros, my DAtV Rook... but that would make a really boring answer, because unfortunately I have no fucking clue what kinda music the people of Thedas create and listen to lol. Veilguard is light on lore so I made up my own vague idea of his childhood based on the wiki, and I imagine that as a Dalish elf the music he heard growing up was like, a mix of whatever old music they remember from Elvhenan and folk songs people have been making up? So that's probably what he likes, unless I find something interesting during the game that I can say he also enjoys. (But I'm keeping in mind that apparently your music taste is shaped by what you enjoyed as a teenager, so.)

If I were to modern AU-him I think I would make him enjoy country and old classics, like, those old standards everyone covered, or generally stuff that sounds like it's been here forever. Also living up to the "facet of me" thing and giving him the teenage discovery of vocaloid that alters your brain forever. In spirit he was an Aishite aishite aishite/Rolling girl/My R 13yo, which means nothing to most people unfortunately, but I can't convey it another way.

what are their tastes? in food, fashion, genres, and music?

Eak has a pretty wide palate, but generally he likes his food to be 1) spicy and 2) very meaty. To him, a meal without meat is no meal at all lol. Owynn on the other hand can be pretty picky about his food... He has an aversion to certain textures and can't handle strong flavors, so he tends to gravitate towards a small selection of safe foods and just kind of eats those almost exclusively. Sometimes he'll steal stuff from Eak's plate to try it out, with mixed results.

I don't think Eak really cares that much about fashion tbh- he mostly wears clothes that are practical and unobtrusive without caring too much about anything else, although he does try to maintain a sort of jock vibe? Unless it's a special occasion; because if you give this man any opportunity to dress as a cowboy or wear a cowboy hat, he'll take it, no questions asked. Also! The silly long shoes are very important to me. He can be a little bit campy sometimes... As a treat.

Owynn meanwhile really cares about his appearance! He always tries to stand out at least a little, and enjoys keeping an asymmetrical vibe whenever possible. I don't think he's into fashion in the sense that he follows trends, though- he likes doing his own thing. In fact, I think if anyone assumed he was trying to fit into any type of trend (like idk, scene or something) he'd be offended by people thinking he's unoriginal or a poser lmao. He's a weird guy.

With genre, I assume you mean movies/TV/etc, since you include music separately, and in that... Eak canonically likes watching telenovelas, so there's that. Owynn thinks they're stupid as shit, but enjoys watching them anyway because he finds the overdramatic twists and turns funny. Maybe they'd watch reality shows too, for the same appeal? They're also into police dramas like Criminal Minds and Dexter, especially when they lean more into the thriller or horror side of things. Or just watch straight up horror movies/TV shows. Nonfiction, but Eak also likes watching sports sometimes- most of those don't appeal to Owynn, except for boxing and wrestling. He likes a little violence in his life... Plus shirtless men fighting = sexy. So yeah, one category where their likes actually overlap a lot, for once.

As for music... I actually don't know what kind of music Eak would like 🤔 He gives me the vibes of a guy who has a disorganized playlist with a bunch of random songs from different genres with no rhyme or reason. Probably some rock, definitely some country, unsure of what else. Owynn meanwhile listens mostly to commercial music, since it's the sort of thing he wants to make so he'll succeed- mostly pop and rock and rock pop, with some R&B for flavor. He also listens to rap but he can't rap for shit so, rip. And eventually Eak gets him listening to country by sheer virtue of playing him every single country song under the sun until he finds a few he likes.

Sparkstember Day 16: Gratuitous Sax & Senseless Violins (When Do I Get To Sing "My Way")

So, well, what an era this was, right. Comeback of the century! Gratsax just has that certain *something*. It's brilliant! One of the best albums ever made if you ask me. The fully electronic style is so perfect for Sparks and they just do it here like it's nothing and like they've been at it for many years. Of course there's the hiatus that took place in the years before it to keep in mind but even then, this album is a HUGE accomplishment and an incredible standout in a catalog of releases that's already full of standouts of all sorts. And it's definitely a personal standout for me too, thinking about how it's been almost a year since I first heard it really freaks me out! It was such a different time for me I feel like, but many things are also exactly the same as back then. It's weird to feel nostalgic about it now but there's really no better word to describe what this feeling is like exactly.

I think this album is meant for vinyl listening in a way. It just fits it so well!! And it's not just the quality to the sound that it has this way (and I don't mean that it sounds necessarily "better", more like just, different and that somehow complements the music even more), but also the ability to have an actual good view of this wonderful album cover that's among my top favourite Sparks things ever. So cool looking! So funny and memorable! One of the finest instances of the music sounding exactly like what the cover looks like. (and learning that the cover is a homage to a SPECIFIC magazine rather than just tabloids in general, that only made it more amazing because it really does look so alike, stuff like this is really cool to me for whatever reason lol)

Also I like the fact that I bought this silly little "disco" lamp around this time last year, so plugging it in for extra vibes during listening makes it all just kind of perfect. And another thing on the visual aspect of it all: this is such a good era for music videos, they're all SO GOOD! Some of my very big favourites for sure and the My Way video might really be one of the best music videos EVER MADE.

But ok, let's get to the point now. Something that stood out to me right away is that every song here is so unique but they fit together so well anyway (not first instance of such thing happening either). There's really lots of variety! I also remember this album fondly because of how it was the first one I listened to with my parents and when my Sparks obsession truly started to become one of the most noticeable things about me to other people, lol. But finally feeling more free and confident with sharing my favourite things that mean so much to me with others is such a wonderful thing anyway, I'd even argue that it helped me live my life more fully than before! And yeah, it's mostly a remark they (my parents) made, that this album nails the balance between keeping to a certain style and offering something new with each song. It's such a wonderful journey!

Alright, once again getting carried away a bit here even though I had no ideas earlier for what to say today. Highlights time then, which is also a bit of a problem because besides one special favourite this album has no spectacularly outstanding highs or any lows, it's all just equally amazing. But I'll try anyway, as I always do.

Favourite songs (and other highlights):

When Do I Get To Sing "My Way": my parents absolutely love this song and well, I do too. No suprise that it's among their most beloved and well-known songs, it really has it all, and it's one of Ron's very best when it comes to lyrics, without a doubt

Frankly, Scarlett, I Don't Give A Damn: so so atmospheric and special, I really like the vocal filter of sorts that's used here, it's just, so cool sounding all around!!

I Thought I Told You To Wait In The Car: this was my LEAST favourite at first but I grew to really like its unhingedness and the part with all "the CAR!!"s on top of each other is just peak of it all and funny as heck

Hear No Evil, See No Evil, Speak No Evil: one of my favourite of Russell's vocal performances! This one and Scarlett are a bit of a duo to me, both simply beautiful songs

Tsui Hark: I LOVE the sound of this one, the piano plus the synth and the spoken word lyrics make this kind of combo that makes it feel like I've already known this one for years and it's just... always existed (which is a term that will apply to a lot of 21st Sparks material anyway, so, that's something to look forward to)

The Ghost Of Liberace: such a big comfort listen to me, I just love this one, makes me feel so at home!!

Gratuitous Sax & Senseless Violins: shoutout to these too because I feel like they might be easy to overlook as these very brief pieces, but they're that extra element that just, really cements this album as a wonderful whole with something to unify all of it into this package of wonder of all sorts

...And then there's the many bonus tracks also, which I'll just mention briefly since I almost forgot about them and because, yeah. I love them all, but the closest to my heart are Love Can Conquer All, She's An Anchorman, She's Beautiful (So What), Mid-Atlantic & This Angry Young Man (Ain't Angry No More) ((and the RON VOCAL VERSIONS OF THEM)) and Katherine Hepburn (love the whole Christi Haydon EP (and Christi is so cool and awesome I need to say that too today) and I should listen to it more, the Boris The Spider cover is fun as heck also)

And now bonus video for no reason from (almost) a year ago, because again, the nostalgiaaaa. (Back when I didn't have a shelf for my record player yet so it took up half of the space on my desk lol)
