(1) After seeing the Fintan murder post, it made me wonder what the actual definition for murder within the Lost Cities could potentially be, and instead of attaching my ramblings there, I decided to contain myself here.

(2) The first consideration for trying to define how the law works in the Lost Cities is to find an analog in the Forbidden Cities. As laws vary by jurisdiction, I felt that as Shannon is from California, any law system that she would potentially apply to the worldbuilding would be based on the California laws regarding murder. As such, Part 1, Title 8, Chapter 1 and Part 1, Title 13, Chapter 1 of the California Penal Code will be used for this analysis. See section (9) for a TL;DR

(3) (a) Section 187 defines murder as "the unlawful killing of a human being, or fetus, with malice aforethought."

(b) In terms of the , it seems likely that instead of "human," "elf" would likely be used. However, this encounters a bit of ambiguity. Drawing from the case Dimitar v. Foster (Everblaze), we can see that even if an alleged crime is committed on Elvin soil, the Ogres still have a right to punish that criminal as they see fit. As such, "elf" is a far too restrictive term. Instead, I propose murder being defined as the unlawful killing of "a member of an intelligent species."

(c) The realm of the elves' opinions on abortion is not a place where this discussion was intended to go, but given that they use inception date instead of the human concept of a birthday implies that the most likely solution here would be simply dropping the term "fetus" from the law, and unborn elves would be considered as a member of an intelligent species.

(d) Now, as for malice, this is where things may get interesting within the Elvin world. Malice is a precursor to guilt, so if this were in the law, only defendants whose minds are broken due to that guilt could be convicted as a murderer under Elvin law. That may not directly follow, but the concept of there being case law where it is established, even if it is not directly stated in the law, seems quite likely.

(4) (a) The interesting consequence of the malice requirement for murder is that under Section 192, Manslaughter is defined as "the unlawful killing of a human being without malice," which is further broken down into voluntary, involuntary, and vehicular manslaughter.

(b) The same arguments apply to the use of the word "human" in the definition, again leading to the replacement with "a member of an intelligent species."

(c) Many types of manslaughter may result in guilt in the offending party, which makes it potentially difficult to determine the difference between the guilt of killing a person on purpose and feeling bad about one's actions (i.e. derived from murder) and the guilt of killing a person by accident and feeling bad about one's actions (i.e. derived from manslaughter)

(5) This leaves the question: under this entirely hypothetical law that I have almost arbitrarily established, would Fintan be considered a murderer?

(6) If we consider the Everblaze incident that resulted in the deaths of five (5) pyrokinetics, I find that the most likely application of the law would be involuntary manslaughter. This is defined as "in the commission of an unlawful act, not amounting to a felony; or in the commission of a lawful act which might produce death, in an unlawful manner, or without due caution and circumspection." Essentially, this is saying that Fintan was not careful enough in making sure that the other five pyrokinetics would be safe, which resulted in their deaths, but it was not malicious. (Exile 158-160) That being said, he did go out with the intention of summoning the Everblaze, so I would not consider it as occurring under "accident and misfortune" (PEN 195).

(7) Kenric's death, however, is a bit more of an issue. When Sophie is healing his mind, Fintan says, "And now everyone will pay" (Everblaze 195). This is difficult to parse as to what, specifically, he means to do in order to get this revenge, but if he was sound enough mind for this to be a coherent thought (as opposed to a memory), it follows that he would know that by calling the Everblaze down into Oblivimyre, people could justifiably die, just like the above section (6). In my opinion, this would be enough to establish malice aforethought in a charge of first-degree murder.

(8) (a) And, just as a bit more bonus content, California Penal Code Section 190.2(a) discusses special circumstances that may result in a defendant being sentenced to "death or imprisonment in the state prison for life without the possibility of parole." The Elves do not believe in capital punishment, but the latter is absolutely a possibility.

(b) The first that applies is 190.2 (a)(5) "The murder was committed for the purpose of avoiding or preventing a lawful arrest, or perfecting or attempting to perfect, an escape from lawful custody." Fintan was trying to escape from prision. That was the whole idea behind summoning the Everblaze.

(c) One that surprisingly does not apply: 190.2(a)(13) "The victim was an elected or appointed official or former official of the federal government, or of any local or state government of this or any other state, and the killing was intentionally carried out in retaliation for, or to prevent the performance of, the victim’s official duties." The first half absolutely applies, but the second half does not. Fintan had no significant ideological difference with Kenric any more than the rest of the Council, so this would not apply.

(d) (1) 190.2(a)(17): "The murder was committed while the defendant was engaged in, or was an accomplice in, the commission of, attempted commission of, or the immediate flight after committing, or attempting to commit, the following felonies:" 190.2(a)(17)(H): "Arson in violation of subdivision (b) of Section 451." That sounds promising, but it begs the question: what does subdivision (b) of Section 451 say?

(2) 451(b): "Arson that causes an inhabited structure or inhabited property to burn is a felony punishable by imprisonment in the state prison for three, five, or eight years." Well then, what does inhabited mean? Luckily, 450(d) answers this question: ""Inhabited” means currently being used for dwelling purposes whether occupied or not. “Inhabited structure” and “inhabited property” do not include the real property on which an inhabited structure or an inhabited property is located." And, in a roundabout way, by Fintan being imprisoned there, he is, quite arguably, living (i.e. dwelling) there, and, as such, 190.2(a)(17)(H) would apply.

(3) As an additional note, Section 451 is the one that states "A person is guilty of arson when he or she willfully and maliciously sets fire to or burns or causes to be burned or who aids, counsels, or procures the burning of, any structure, forest land, or property," which made its rounds here a while ago for its specific wording of "he or she," implying that nonbinary people can commit arson. Fintan consistently uses he/him within the canon, and I find that to supercede any headcanons that may conflict with that for the purposes of this analysis.

(9)(a) In conclusion, is Fintan a murderer?

(b) Most importantly, he was not convicted by a jury, and he is innocent until proven guilty, unless the Lost Cities does not ascribe to that notion or the notion of a jury trial, and, as such, he, legally, has done nothing wrong.

(c) I find that the events in the Everblaze incident resulting in the deaths of five (5) pyrokinetics would most likely be charged as involuntary manslaughter due to the lack of malice and caution in the defendant's actions.

(d) I also find that the events during Fintan's mind healing and escape from prison would most likely be charged as first-degree murder, enhanced due to its motivation as being a way to escape imprisonment as well as doing it in the course of arson.

(10) If I missed anything horrifically obvious, just, like, keep in mind that I am not actually a lawyer.

im curious as to about how long each of your pieces takes?? it took me two class periods to be satisfied with the pinch pot we just made in ceramics class (though that’s probably also because im very much a perfectionist) so i can’t imagine how long a whole critter would take

it really depends!! some of them (unpainted, simple shapes) take as little as five minutes; some of them (large, complex shapes with very detailed painting) take as much as 10 hours.

I have gotten way faster over the years, though, so don't think I'm just some natural genius! the skills of sculpting build on each other. Just last year it took me three hours to make a simple fox, and now I can bust out a really nice fox (with toe beans!) in two hours. it just takes time and repetition to get there <3

and hey congrats on being in a ceramics class!! I hope you have fun with it!! If you like critters, I recommend stealing some of the clay and making some kind of toadish blob out of it and firing it in the kiln, as long as your studio masters won't get mad about it. the joy of making a lumpy little guy is unmatched.

examples of sculpture + time counts below the cut!

Little guys like this tiny cicada, which is a design I've done so many times that I can make them on autopilot, are in the 5-15 minutes range to sculpt. bunnies, chickens, wizards, and mini-cats are like that for me too!

but if I add the time it takes to paint them, even simple sculptures can end up taking much more time—for instance, this starry chicken took only five minutes to make but about an hour to paint.

then when you get into the more complex shapes, those can take a lot of time—this anthro coyote took me 3 hours to sculpt because it was a complex shape AND I was unfamiliar with making anthros so I was learning as I went:

and when you add complex designs to complex sculptures, you end up with projects like this peach-tree bear, which took three hours to make and five hours to paint, so that's eight hours in one sculpture:

and eight hours is about my limit for sculptures I'm going to sell. BUT. when I'm making things for myself, I'm willing to spend even MORE time on them to make them perfect for my own tastes. I tend to spend the most time on fanart sculptures—it takes a lot more time to make a sculpture perfectly on-model to a pre-existing character than it does to make up a whole new thing. So the sculpture that has taken me the most time so far in this batch is this JoJo's Bizarre Adventure fanart sculpture, Star Platinum:

What are your thoughts about the pacing of the story? I've seen a lot of people saying that it wasn't well distributed I mean they didn't get enough GreatTyme for them to build this Real Connection between them. I see people saying they don't feel the connection between the characters. And then for Korn and Tonkla, people were saying they were such a big deal on the past episodes and suddenly no interactions between them after that fight. What do you think?

Anon, I would be lying to myself and everyone else if I expressed any negative thoughts or feelings about 4 Minutes, because I genuinely don't have any. The way Sammon and BOC chose to present this story is breathtaking and I'm so impressed and proud of what they've done with it.

I've seen all the complaints you mentioned and it makes me sad, I'll admit. 4 Minutes is a show that should be judged as a whole, not in fragments and certainly not in the way many fans have chosen to talk about it.

Especially about TymeGreat the complaints are pretty unfair, because we've gotten soooooo much about them and about their bond and about who they are as people, individually or together. It's a shame to judge a story this way and it makes your experience watching it worse.

About KornTonkla, it's pretty logical why their story is laid out the way it is. I don't know why someone would not like how their relationship has developed when that was the whole point to begin with.

I'm not delving into any of this further because I don't have the brain power right now, but basically what I want to say is that the pacing is perfect, if not a little too fast, all the characters have gotten their time to shine, all their stories are interconnected in a way that's deeply satisfying and fascinating to watch, and all the relationships make me want to eat my skin and light my house on fire.

I hope the final episode will conclude this wonderful show in a way that will stay with me for a long time, as the rest of the show has achieved so far.

Normally I save it as a draft like five different times when I know it's going to be a long post BECAUSE I don't wanna lose the whole thing but. It was 3:30am when I had first seen this and went to answer it and I was completely cracking up over that idea for Finn because. It's FITTING. Especially cause like. Going off his car model and when the movie came out that man is like. He's like 53 or something. So he totally grew up in a time where that was probably even more unacceptable and that would so be like the trying to cope responce that goes in to just saying it to mess with people. Your stereotypical gentleman who is suave and overly sappy romantic and likes buys roses and boxes of chocolates and would throw his suit jacket down over a puddle even though it's NOT necessary. Oh and he's also GAY.

I just. Or like some interview sort of thing and the interviewer asks him something and that's how he responds and there is just a lengthy silence before the interviewer is like "....no.?" And he's like "oh" and then has to take a sip from his wine IM. SORRY.I JUst. I don't know why I have so many thoughts on this. I haven't even gotten into saying thanks for giving me an entire fruitbasket worth of things to answer. I'm pretty sure if I was an animal in a zoo so much of my enrichment would just come from these.

I don't know how you telepathically magically knew I was thinking about him but I suppose they are all ping-ponging around in my head like cable TV screensavers. I proceeded to space out here and have about 40 minutes worth of my own entire imaginary thing but I really need to dedicate a day to just sitting and thinking about him because I like him a lot and thought about him a lot(he's the whole starting reason for my Cars thing and actually the one I ended up liking first), and if it wasn't for EventsTM my brain probably wouldn't be so clogged trying to think about him naturally. I. I haven't even started any of the asks I'm going to stop now. This is gonna be a long one isn't it.

🍑 - is your f/o more comfortable giving or receiving gifts? why? do they have any preferences on gifts they like receiving?

I feel like he'd be more comfortable receiving gifts because I feel like he would have a lot of trouble trying to get people gifts or having an idea on what to gift them. If it came up naturally(like he saw something that reminded him of someone else that they'd like) he'd probably have an easier time with it but if an event or holiday comes up he'd probably break in half. But also partly because of his popularity(he did a lot of online/iRacing/simulator competetive racing stuff, he was super good at it, and it's how he got offeree to race on actual tracks) he probably was used to being given things from winning events or from people that would support him. He's not very well rehearsed on what feelings are, so things like gift giving/recieving, which normally(keyword) involves feelings or knowing what other people would like sort of plays to his weaknesses.

I feel like if he ever did get anything that he was happy over getting, he probably wouldn't express it well(at all), but he'd either end up using it until he couldn't anymore(whether it's playing a video game till he's sick of it or something that is a 'practical tool' like a weighted blanket) or if it's a more sentimental/handmade thing he'd probably leave it on a high shelf where it couldn't get tampered with and perhaps most people wouldn't see it and be able to question him on it.

🥦 - does your f/o have any pet peeves? things that just really really get on their nerves? what are they and why?

This is a really interesting one because I feel like he has a lot of things that can upset him, so i gotta mull over which ones would fall under the line of being a pet peeve and which is just something that sets him off. I feel like he would not be able to do getting interrupted at all. And unless it's like someone he's really REALLY close with, I feel like he wouldn't be big on touch either. There are veryy few times where be might not care or he might reach out first but even then 98% of the time it's probably better to just ask him if you can or to just not worry about it, even if it's something like just patting him on the shoulder or whatnot. Even I ask, of course. Even if most the time I get a "yes" or "sure", just giving the choice makes a big difference.

🥬 - what are some beige flags your f/o has? so, not bad, but not nessecarily good either. just. "oh. you do This."

These flag things always trip me up because in my head from my understanding red flags are like "Hey, you should probably end the relationship over this, it's pretty bad" but then I'll hear things like people saying it's a red flag to do something that is completely arbitrary and I can't tell if I've lost my mind or they've lost my mind. Then again, I'm kinda super biased even with beige flags because there are very few, if any things that my F/Os can do that I'll be like "://" over, yknow? Cause like, if they did something that off-put me that much I probably wouldn't like them that much! Am I reading into this too much? I probably am.

However. If we're talking from an OUTSIDE perspective, like what other people might consider beige flags for him, there's a right amount of things I could say because he was one of the ones that I got critisizm for liking him. I feel like how quickly he gets frustrated over things might be something that would get pointed out, cause in the book about his backstory, after something like getting sensory overloaded on a couple occasions he would get really upset/angry to the point of storming off(cough pun intended). But I also completely understand that and I think that adds to my bias😅. And I'm sure many would be turned off by his cold demeanor.

🍒 - if your f/o and you spend a day doing anything, anything at all, what would they do and why?

Okay, I really like this question because I get to talk about how he spends 90% of his freetime just playing through racing simulators. But I need to you picture the whole complete setup of having the wheel and pedals and things that you hook up to your computer and like the several monitors. Like a dedicated room or corner of a room to it. And that's what he spends most of his time doing. He is online a lot but his social media presence does not exist it all. He is not very outdoorsy either so if we are spending the day together a lot of it will be spent either playing games together(sometimes I can convince him to try out another game with me) And most the time, even if we are playing together on like an Xbox controller or something, I'm still spending about the whole session just fawning over his skills at it. Sometimes I can grab his attention with something else for a little bit if I end up cooking or knitting or such. You should've absolutely seen the face he pulled and reaction he had over me knitting.

Okay, I was giggling at first at the fact that you picked lemon for him because that's funny, and then I wanted to get into my story about how I actually really like lemons and sour candy is my favorite type of candy and whenever I get iced tea at restaurants I always take the lemon slice and just eat it and don't squeeze it in the tea but the FACT THAT THIS IS THE QUESTION TO IT IM. It's too early in the morning for this.

Okay I'm going to be real here IM GOING TO BE REAL HERE. Once I stop losing my mind. Truthfully. Okay. BECAUSE of the whole lemon thing. I do think he would have several answers for what he'd want to change about himself because asides from money and power that man IS insecure. I've already talked about my headcannon of him wearing his hat and like nevveerrr ever taking it off because it helps hide his curly hair right. That's why I have to squeeze him and love on him until a proper ego about his geniune self starts to form. And definitely not because I'd do it anyway regaurdless. Totally. I mean he is literally the kingpin of the lemons(movie captions call him kingpin, their words not mine!!), that man is messed up. Society probably tried to maul him. Humanized version of what a lemon is is nearly just any minority ever. Breaks down a lot? Faulty? Doesn't work right? Gets slander souly just for looks, typically ones they can't control? I mean, even asides from things like rust and dents and whatnot, cars like Acer's typically worked fine, but they got dubbed "fishbowl"(it's also his lisence plate) because of how they looked and it was the running gag. What gets dubbed a lemon is bulleted point #2 for why I cry over his speach, in this essay I will-

🍏 - if you have any queer headcanons for your f/o, how did they realize they were queer?

It's funny because for a long time when I was still sorting out how I identified, I was genderfluid at the time, and so I just dubbed all the characters I liked as pan and called it a night. I still do that now for a few reasons but then we will get off topic into my entire gender identity story! But also because of that, I don't have very proper elaborate stories of them realizing their feelings and such. There are a select few of them where I might have more particular queer headcannons or have more of a story for them, but I do think for Axlerod it would be something that he'd known about himself for a while. Like a longgg while. And he probably has moments of openly showcasing it or supporting it with pride flags and whatnot without caring about any negative stuff he might receive. He has to at least have one big open indulgence in it during pride month. I normally am more quiet during pride month but I don't mind indulging with him cause it makes him smile(I say, at 6 in the morning with half-lidded sleepy eyes and the most "I have a problem" smile of a grin).

🍇 - if you and your f/o never met, what do you think your f/o would be doing right now?

Oohhhhmigosh. Blowing up the planet, probably? /joking. There's this whole entire thing in the story of him getting a little more tame in his havoc and it becoming slightly noticeable to others, because his vengeful scheming against the world eases up a bit now that he has someone to keep him a bit straight and that also doesn't want to kick him to the curb for him doing human things like. Being strange or a bit unconventional. And also because he now has an animal at home(me) to take care if and put time and energy into. And feed sandwhiches. So if we hadn't met, he'd probably still be just as unhinged as ever, if not a bit more destructive. Heck, I shudder to think about where myself would be if it wasn't for my F/Os! So maybe we'd meet in the midst of wrecking havoc(Kane can not cope with the concept of him and F/Os not meeting).

🥑 - is there any niche topics your f/o is interested in? what are they and why do they like them?

OKAY. I WISH I HAD GONE INTO BETTER DEPTH IN THIS DURING THE MOVIE WHEN WE WERE WATCHING IT. I don't know how niche this really is but I really like it. But with the whole newspaper thingy and it talking about the like Abyssian Desert that he crossed and the whole "around the globe" thing for the World Grand Prix like. I think he just enjoys doing that stuff. Which I suppose it's like yknow he is/has a Land Rover! Of course he does! But a Land Rover doesn't HAVE to do anything!! There are plenty that just go around on motorways! I think he just likes doing that stuff just for fun. That slight smile and sad pathetic wink(I love him) was not the same maddening smile during the Mel Dorado show and next to the Queen of England that say "I should probably be interrogated over something." Kane do NOT pull out pictures and clips. Even if they're in good quality. Maybe. Maybe later. Later. We can do that later in the day.

But I think he just enjoys going out and exploring. Going on like hikes or something. Ohmigosh it's. 6 in the morning and I'm covering my face and closing my eyes and giggling. Yes I've been working on this post for the past three hours straight, I've loved every second of it. I accidentally. Just typed. "-I've loved every second of him" and if that doesn't confirm my brain has been sucked into a hole then I don't know what does.

But anyway. I also really enjoy that stuff. Which is partly why I want a Jeep and why I like going on really long walks and just wandering into bits of land that I probably shouldn't be trespassing. We need to take a hike or something.

since this is my 2nd time attempting to write this answer, I hope my points are coherent enough to follow lol. Pretty long paragraphs so I'm putting them under the cut.

I don't really know where to start, but I could talk about "Sneeze and Thank You" episode, where Voicemail plays a more important role (even tho it didn't talk much lol) rather than just a brief moment showing the Movers having a hard time getting customers. After Dave fixed it, Voicemail thanked him while also teasing (?) him by using the nickname his mom gave him. Dave just laughs it off and gives Voicemail a tap and I just thought that exchange was really cute ahahahaaah and so here we are.

After that episode, Voicemail makes another appearance in "March of the Movers", where the Movers check their messages. I just,, wanna point out that after saying there were no messages, Voicemail didn't have any sarcastic or rude remark about it. It even cooperated fine enough when the Movers wanted to change the voice message. Made me think that maybe Voicemail was warming up (?) to the Movers, or maybe when Dave fixed up Voicemail, he had also adjusted something that caused it to not be so mean now lol. It felt similar to Knit Knots' case, where he was somewhat enjoying some excitement and got along better with the Movers.

And just like Knit Knots, Voicemail doesn't appear anymore in later seasons. 🥲

Right when their character and bond were growing to be more interesting, they're gone huhu. In this case it's worse 'cause Voicemail barely appears in Season 1 lmao. Well, as a canon-compliant explanation, I'd think Voicemail broke down again but much worse condition? and Dave eventually had to reset it so it could function again, which is why the telephone/answering machine still exists after Season 1, but it doesn't have its voice or personality anymore.

Anyway headcanon time! I like to think they sometimes make conversation to Voicemail other than checking for messages, and since Dave's workbench is closer to the counter (i think?) that Voicemail sits on, he would talk to it more often.

Also this is me with my thick ship lenses on lol but in the marching episode, when Dave suggested to say something extra silly and fun for the message, it was kinda like Voicemail was overdoing it in an attempt to impress Dave hahahahah.

I think I've been reading one too many scenarios of computer/programs growing attached to their user and wanting attention from them, cuz that just basically sums up the headcanons I have for their dynamic. Either Voicemail just appreciating Dave and the Movers more after fixing it, or something in its systems was adjusted when Dave fixed it so it's not constantly berating the guys unprompted anymore.

I don't know, maybe this is sorta like how Warehouse Mouse was close to Smitty but then got along with the other Movers later on. Voicemail got along better with Dave, and he maybe makes sure it doesn't overstep in its words, and eventually got along with the rest of the team. I like to think Voicemail would like getting messages from Nina, and sometime when Nina didn't leave any messages Voicemail would ask her about it. Also, sticky notes! I remember that sometimes people would have a sticky notepad near the telephone, so that they can write whatever note while they were calling. I just think it would be cute if the Movers and Nina would leave sticky notes of reminders or just doodles on Voicemail.

I have thoughts on that one moment in "Power Play" S2 episode when Dave had multiple answering machines similarly colourful like Voicemail, but unfortunately I don't know how to articulate those thoughts into proper sentences lol.

Anyway that's uhh, probably most of my thoughts for now. Saving the more "shippy" thoughts for some other time because I don't know what to think LMAO. Also yeah these are thoughts on canon Voicemail. For human/robot Voicemail, it's kinda more straightforward in that it works at the Idea Warehouse and acts like a coworker that does their job well and gets along fine enough but also have those moments to be annoying for no reason hahah.

Just like with Zuma's post, it's in no specific order, I just really loved all these moments

That first Mission PAW episode when the Princess chose specifically HIM to be the watch dog and guard her crown. That was so adorable I can't even. He seemed so genuinely proud and happy there! Plus he's so damn cute wearing that tux lol

When they were going to rescue Skye and Chase was so worried upon hearing that she was the one in need of rescue. Then when Ryder was choosing which pups would be part of the rescue, that moment he was like "Pick meee pick meeee-"?? That was so cute, he really cares about her and wanted to impress her so bad lmao personally make sure she would be safe (Bonus points for his excitement over being picked for the rescue and everyone else like Go ahead king, we all know you wanted this XD)

The entire time he spent with the owlet and working to rescue the mama owl from that fallen tree. It was so sweet!! The fact I also love owls surely didn't help AUSHAUSHAUSHAU I love that episode SO MUCH

That moment when he finally turned into a Merpup. Poor boy was so fixated on "being on duty" despite wanting SO BAD to go and participate in "the fun". And he couldn't even enjoy being a merpup immediately because he was transformed just because he needed to swim faster for the rescue but he was so overjoyed anyway! Only after that mess, he could go and finally have the fun he wanted and deserved so much.

That moment in the first Sea Patrol episode when he and Skye were left behind at the beach while the rest of the team went on the first mission with the Sea Patroller. His face upon SEEING the HQ turn into a ship and sail away was just priceless XD (Also it's rare to see Chase being put on the sidelines for once lmao)

The first Ultimate Rescue episode!! God, Chase was SO HAPPY. He's THE Police Pup, he gets to lead the mission, supervise, plan, give orders. And the way all the other pups clearly loved the experience and were SO ON BOARD with being Police Pups with him, it was just awesome!

So far these are my favorite moments! Actually I legit just got to watch this first Ultimate Rescue episode like one hour ago. Not to mention it took me five days to think of these moments and then go find the episodes again to take the respective screenshots XD

thank you!! that's very sweet! lemme tell you my favourite bit of extremely low level valentino beef. fair warning: this is extremely minor. it's not that serious. I just like old drama

so you know the 2006 season, right, where valentino actually got on pretty well with all the other title contenders? depending on how you want to look at it, there were 4-5 contenders that year... capirossi's a bit marginal whether he counts as a 'title contender'. he was tied leader of the standings after six rounds, but then was involved in a horror crash at catalunya that halted his momentum. the crash was caused by his teammate sete and there's a decent chance capirossi would have been champion without this race. his eventual third place in the championship standings was due to him bouncing back to claim a strong string of results late in the season

here's a few more photos of that crash:

the other four contenders were nicky hayden, valentino, marco melandri and dani pedrosa. to give you a sense of what that title fight looked like, here were the standings after eleven out of seventeen rounds:

obviously valentino was a title contender given he nearly won the whole thing - but, yeah, he was very much on the back foot that entire season. so of those other four contenders, valentino got on very well with capirossi (who valentino had been a fan of as a kid and had met when he was eleven years old) and with hayden (who valentino had helped with the transition from superbike when hayden became his rookie teammate at repsol honda in 2003). he was reasonably friendly with pedrosa and had a long-standing friendship with melandri, if one that seems to have cooled off when they became premier class rivals (according to melandri in any case). you do have to say, the good vibes are a little unusual as valentino title fights go... it's a very chaotic very exciting season that has quite a few excellent valentino performances as he attempts to bounce back from all manner of ill fortune - but no realbeef. it really is a title fight mostly fought in good spirits. the most significant drama between any of these contenders was the hayden/pedrosa estoril crash that very nearly cost hayden the title. from broadbent's 'ring of fire' about the scenes after the race:

in the end dani was bailed out by valentino's crash in valencia (though a lot of american fans did not move on from the incident); it was by far the most significant on-track clash he had with hayden in their years together at honda, at a time when the vibes in that team were *checks notes* not great. hayden said all was forgiven - if with the caveat that he didn't know how he would've felt if he hadn't won the title. but, y'know, heartwarming: valentino is part of a title fight where he is not involved in the biggest beef of the year (the other title fight this is true of was 1998, another iconic season)

there is however one other rider who played an important role in the 2006 title fight - one who thinks that his relationship with valentino was affected by the events of that year. first bit of context: the season opener at jerez went disastrously wrong for valentino at the very first corner, when toni elias rode into him and caused him to crash. that jerez crash was one of those classic first corner incidents that could've easily been a lot uglier, and some riders quite narrowly avoid valentino

kind of started the season off the way it was going to go on, really. anyway, here's valentino reacting to the crash, and also elias coming over to him post-race to apologise:

elias ended up finishing 4th, while valentino picked the bike up to finish 14th. here's what valentino had to say post-race:

"We knew this was going to be a difficult race but maybe not so difficult!" said Rossi, who had been battling chatter problems for much of the weekend and qualified just ninth on the grid. "I saw Toni come up on the inside and he hit me; this is racing and these things happen. "I have known Toni for many years and he is a good rider. He apologised to me after the race so I told him not to worry - only to remember to brake next time and if it is too late then to hit another bike instead of me!"

by the way, this incident allowed casey to get such a good start to his rookie season, in a race where he ended up finishing sixth:

I made a great start off the line and our luck improved further in the first corner, when Toni Elías got his braking markers completely wrong, took out Valentino Rossi and opened up a gap for me to dive through. I was sixth by the end of the first lap and up to fourth two laps later, just behind Nicky Hayden in third.

and there's probably some symbolism there if you dig deep enough. elias was also involved in the eventual outcome of the 2006 motogp season in another way (from the vale race recs post):

anyway, moving on from the 2006 season for now, there's a couple more on-track interactions we might as well rattle through. the two of them had quite a tense coming together at turkey 2007, the third race of the season and around the time valentino was coming to realise the casey/ducati combination was going to be a real problem that season. the fight between elias and valentino didn't have much of an effect on valentino's race given how he had some nicely fucked up tyres (bit of a theme that year), but that didn't stop valentino from being irritated post-race:

Elias took second from Rossi with a move down the inside at the final complex, but both riders nearly came off their bikes as they touched during the pass. While Elias maintained second to the flag, Rossi later fell to 10th after developing tyre issues. "I'm very disappointed with Elias because he was very unfair with me," Rossi told Italia1 television. "Obviously we're all racing, but he had already overtaken me, and when he came on my side he tried to push me out and make me fall on purpose. I don't think that's fair behaviour. There are other words than 'unfair' coming up in my mind, but I'll leave them to the imagination. "He had already tried to come to apologise another time after the chequered flag. I'll say no more, I owe him twice, so I'll see him in China. I think he has a rather unfair way of riding with everyone. He had already overtaken me, so there was no need to throw me out. We know these things among riders. So now we know, and we'll know how to behave next time we meet him." Elias shrugged off the incident. "These things happen in racing and I'm happy with today's result," he said. "The way I drive may look risky but I feel comfortable with it and I will carry on like this."

at this point, I do just have to go on a brief tangent to present my 'casey complains about toni elias' compilation

definitely some fun lines in this, like "I think casey has problems with everybody and not only me". ouch. this does help show elias was just one of those guys who a lot of riders had minor beef with... you know how it is sometimes (incidentally, elias was also a talent linked to alberto puig, so they met quite young before casey was a full time grand prix rider)

the other minor on-track incident between valentino and elias I wanted to include is one where I haven't found any post-race reporting or comments from either rider, so, again, clearly not that big a deal. still found it funny so. it's sachsenring 2008, casey has just won the last two races, and he's well on his way to winning his third consecutive one after dani crashed out from a massive lead. it's raining, which is why the whole field is super spread out. valentino is actually riding a pretty decent race, but his problem is he's coming back from seventh on the grid and casey started on pole, with fairly predictable repercussions for their respective race. still, in those conditions it's always worth trying to put as much pressure as possible on the leader, and valentino does end up closing in until he's around five seconds behind casey

which is how valentino ends up attempting to lap elias - while the commentators chat about how valentino very much does not want to be taking any risks, not with toni elias, not with twenty world championship points at stake ("the front of toni elias' bike knows the side of valentino rossi's bike very well, doesn't it"). elias doesn't really move to one side, which means valentino has to overtake him the regular way. after the move has been completed, he does this:

anyway, obviously valentino doesn't catch casey, and casey picks up his third consecutive win. worrying from valentino's perspective... especially given that there's a lot of tracks come that really seem to suit casey, including the upcoming laguna seca

to round things off. after laguna, elias shares two consecutive podiums with valentino at brno and misano - both of which valentino won after casey crashed out of the lead

when elias was unable to secure a motogp ride for 2010, he ended up switching to moto2 and becoming the first ever winner of the series. from his motogp.com profile:

He started the year as one of the title favourites in the Moto2 class, and throughout the season his wealth of experience and race-craft has shone through as he claimed seven wins, including four in a row over the summer period. His characteristic “hang-on” riding style and charming personality has won him millions of fans across the globe, and the Spaniard becomes the first ever Moto2 World Champion at the age of 27.

he returned to motogp and had a troubled 2011 season, before competing in a mix of motogp and moto2 in 2012 - and his last full season in grand prix racing was 2013. I mainly bring this up so I can include this truly charming casey comment:

"one failed" casey. please

elias ends up moving stateside to compete there instead. so, he still runs into motogp riders at austin - which he brings up in a 2020 interview, while accusing valentino pf still being bitter over 2006:

“Being able to beat Valentino [for victory] has only happened to me once in my life,” he told DAZN. "Michelin brought me a new tyre on the Saturday and I managed to improve my pace by seven-tenths and fight for victory. "I thanked Michelin for the help, although I was very angry when I discovered that this rubber, with a softer casing, was the one used by the best riders throughout the season and they only gave it to me in the penultimate race of the year. "When I meet Valentino - I see him every year in Austin - I can see that he still has [Estoril 2006] stuck in his heart, he has not forgiven me… It's over, it's time to be friends, but it is not possible. He is so competitive, he will never forgive me!"

these comments were put to valentino, to which he said the following:

"When I met Toni Elias in the United States, because now he runs there, there were only positive moments,” he told a video chat with BT Sport. “We have a good relationship and I'm not angry with him because he beat me in Portugal, but because he knocked me out in first corner during the Spanish Grand Prix.  “In that season, Jerez was the first race of the year and immediately made me lose points and probably also the championship."

obviously, this is a joke, and valentino is allowed to make those occasionally. it's also probably a joke that has just a little bit of truth to it. who knows how valentino feels about toni elias these days, whether he really was still acting coldly towards elias during austin trips because of a grudge that dates back to 2006. but, y'know, it's also kind of fine to hold grudges for petty reasons sometimes... I'll say it: I support valentino's god-given right to just find some of these guys kinda annoying. not everything has to be an epic feud. sometimes guys just have a little mental list of past transgressions where each individual item is kinda small and silly but they're also literally never going to forget about each of them and they haven't forgiven anything even if it's been well over a decade... you know how it is
