the line grace says in the police station “it was god’s plan!” was most likely meant to be like a joke line, but from grace’s perspective, it really is god’s plan that put her in that spot

this post got long, so check it out under the cut if you want :)

she calls max falling and dying “an act of god” which makes sense in regards to her logic. her plan to stop max from holding power over her so her sexual feelings would go away didn’t work. max turning a new leaf would have helped the school, but it would not have fixed grace’s problem. so, right when grace fails, that’s the moment max plummets to his death. she didn't even have to push him, the floorboards gave way on their own.

from her perspective, it seems like god intervened to help grace and set her on the right path. it proves that max was something to be dealt with and that grace's battle with temptation didn't cast her out of his favor. everything that grace does after max falls is done so to remain on this path god has set for her. if god deemed max’s demise just, then why should they rot in jail for it? so she holds onto her faith and doubles down to bury him under the floorboards because she believes it is the right thing to do

(not exactly relevant to the point, but the next two weeks, it’s implied that grace doesn’t immediately reap the benefits from staying faithful. she is absent from “go go nighthawks” for no obvious reason and only reports to finding max unsexy after she gets the dream of ghost!max. so who knows what she was struggling with or what her headspace looked like during that gap. maybe she saw it as a test to prove herself after letting those impure thoughts briefly win. it's a test that she overcomes at the beginning of act 2 bc she is very chipper before her dad gets the call about waylon hall.)

when the police enter the mix after richie dies and are able to locate max’s body, they are all, once again, at risk, leading grace to double down again. she goes to the police station with the clivesdale theory to get them off her scent, continuing to do what she believes is right.

unfortunately, shapiro doesn't fall for her lies, which leads us to the line. the only reason grace is in the police station is to alleviate them of blame for an act god did himself. but in this moment, when grace needs it, god doesn’t intervene like he did before, god leaves grace out to dry which prompts her calling him a son of a bitch. in grace's eyes, if he never made the floorboards give way and set this in motion, grace wouldn't be in active danger of getting arrested.

she’s been following this path faithfully for these two weeks and now scattered and panicking, she continues to, out of a lack of a better path to follow. she doubles down by stealing bailey’s gun and booking it out of there. even with the believed betrayal, grace still follows along.

to push this further, it’s easy to claim that grace’s headspace is completely screwed up. we see this with her breakdown in the alley (where she notably doesn’t say that dismembering a body is something terrible that she did, which is pointed out, but it makes sense bc she only did that to follow god's plan, so how could it be bad? but touching herself and lying to the police are choices she made) and with the introduction of the libs and ghost!max, grace has to grapple with mind bending things.

i feel like she would hold some doubt that she is doing something right due to the lack of intervention before and due to the tangibility of the libs and how they have an actual avenue to get rid of max, which god doesn’t have. but i believe grace continues in following along with god’s plan, holding faith until she has to save the day.

another gap i’m fascinated with is what grace was doing during cool (reprise) before she stepped in. we know she didn’t deal with max at all, so i like to think she prayed. her last plea for intervention or guidance or something, but nothing answers. despite her faith, nothing helps her. and that’s when she realizes what she cherishes most.

so, with her friends and the world on the line, grace abandons the path in order to fix what she believes god started. and to fix it, she has to give up her chastity. the thing she cherishes above all else purely because of her faith. only because it’s something god had taught her to cherish. grace has to leave it all behind to save everyone.

after sending max to the black, grace has left the perfect vacuum for the lords to fill. she still has a strong moral code, just not a god to put her faith behind. so once the lords show the power and strength they can offer, how is grace in this state ever going to refuse? she lost a massive part of her identity even after believing and doing everything right. she picks up the black book to ensure nothing that happened to her will happen to anyone else. and through that, maybe she can atone enough to forgive herself

does this make sense or is this accurate? who knows, i don’t know what i’m talking about half the time, but it was fun to think through her logic a bit more. i don’t know

one thing abt thalia and percy's dynamic that is often overlooked is that percy was punished for the same things thalia was rewarded for. there's a prophecy abt one of the big three kids? percy is treated like a liar and thief and ppl refuse to talk to him. thalia? everyone respects her (including gods!) and assumes she'll do a great job saving the world. thalia is accepted immediately at camp and threatens the place percy spent two years proving he deserves. percy wants to go on a quest to save his friend? he's an attention seeker and glory stealer. thalia? well, she's the obvious choice. thalia comes up w a plan to win capture the flag that's basically "leave everything to me" and percy comes up with a plan that's basically "if you see a good opportunity, go for it," but percy is viewed as the control freak.

what i'm saying is percy had every reason to resent thalia and he didn't. he chose not to. and thalia had every reason to look down on percy and didn't.

even when they were fighting, i never saw it as a power struggle. they were being pit against each other, and instead of doing what everyone expected them to (kronos was fully expecting thalia to kill percy), they chose to love and respect each other. because they're not their parents. they're just two kids who started cracking under the pressure but refused to break.
