Yes! I’ve become a huge fan of the low-stakes practice run!! If the thing you’re afraid of is failure, give yourself a situation where very little can fail and if it does you’re not gonna be hurt because it doesn’t even count; it’s just practice. Treat a scary possible failure as a situation for learning. (Example: It doesn’t matter if you burn this birthday cake or the frosting looks a little wonky because this was a test and the birthday isn’t till next month! And now you know to cook it 5 minutes less and to chill the frosting before it goes on.)
Doesn’t work for everything obviously. But like for me, I decided I needed to make some more friends which is hard to do as an adult. Also scary. Also what if you meet someone and don’t vibe and you’ve wasted the time? Well, I found ways to make it fun and to do it several times in rapid succession so it got easier. Step 1: made a social media post in Fb group for my city saying I’m looking to make friends and a little about me. Step 2: Replied to every single message regardless of how they sound. Anyone who responds again cares enough. Step 3: Offer to meet up - important: I picked public places I already wanted to go and shared my location. That way even if I didn’t like the person, I still got to hike that trail around the park I’ve never been to / try the new boba tea shop / get my favorite tacos.
This works with a lot of stuff I’ve tried recently. Had too cook a new dish for a big party - made a smaller version two weeks early as a practice run while snacking and playing a movie; only me and my roommate tried it for feedback so there wasn’t any pressure to be perfect. Or I had to learn to crochet for a group gift to a friend - picked up a little cheap yarn and went to a meetup at the public library and asked people there how to start. Other than under $10 for yarn and a hook I was clueless but got an idea of what I would need to buy and learn for my part of the gift.
TLDR: if there’s something you’re afraid of failing at, give yourself a low-stakes practice run. Plan fun elements into it so you can enjoy it anyway and use the opportunity to learn. Remind yourself that it’s just practice so it doesn’t matter if you fail when that’s the point of doing it.
hey has anyone found a way to act on your desires without opening yourself to failure

Big Bang (Sort of) Editing Story [Day 87]
I started writing this fic while editing my Big Bang story, but am going to continue doing it for other things now that Kill Dear is out. I will write and publish 100 words of the story every time I finish doing whatever task I’m doing. If you’d like to block these proceedings, please feel free to block the tag proofread stories. I will reblog this post with the parts of the story I do today. Edited chapters are linked; everything else I’ve done so far is under the cut.

My internet has been a bit wonky today. I tried to do the study break story earlier, but wasn’t able to make a tumblr post, so if I disappear without warning, that is likely why.
Chapter 39 (Logan)
Logan was glad to see when Patton brought Virgil to meet him at the library that the boy seemed to be doing slightly better than he had been that morning. He still was clearly a bit jumpy and didn’t seem interested in his normal library bound activities, that being exploring the library and climbing on top of shelves/somehow getting into walls. Instead, he basically hid behind Logan, taking a seat half under his desk on the side facing away from the door.
Patton had to leave to go have a few meetings, leaving the two of them alone.
“Would you like a book?” Logan asked the boy hiding under his desk.
“Sure,” he said softly, and Logan handed him one of the children’s books he’d been trying to read. He took it and set it in his lap.
“Tell me if you need anything,” Logan instructed, before turning back to his own book about reading Sanskrit.
Weight pressed against his leg a few minutes later and Logan idly reached down a hand to touch the top of Virgil’s head, stroking through his hair softly a few times. It was luckily warm at Logan’s desk despite being by the window. Being cold always made Virgil more distressed.
He glanced down after a bit of hair petting only to see Virgil not reading his book and instead looking up at him.
 “Everything alright?” Logan asked.
Virgil watched him for a long moment, his eyes focused and intent. “Why are you being nice to me?” he finally asked.
Logan looked at him, confused. “Why wouldn’t I be nice to you?” he asked. He did not get a response. He just got dark, intense eyes seeming to stare into his soul. “You haven’t done anything to make me want to be mean to you.”
“Yes, I have,” Virgil said simply.
“Well,” Logan conceded. “Nothing recently. You didn’t get particularly far with the… action that could have made me unhappy anyway.”
“I could have.”
“You didn’t.”
“Does it matter?”
“I think it does,” Logan said. He’d paused the petting of Virgil’s hair when he’d spoken, but softly ran his hand through it again now. Virgil pulled away from him.
“I don’t,” he said.
“Well, seeing as it is my affection we are talking about, I imagine my opinion matters more,” Logan stated calmly. Something about that sentence appeared to have been the wrong thing to say because Virgil scowled at him.
“You’re stupid,” he said.
“There is significant evidence that contradicts that statement,” Logan said. “Case in point,” he gestured to the desktop, “I am currently reading a book about a dead language…”
“Yeah, well there is significant evidence that supports that statement,” Virgil sassed back.
“Oh?” Logan asked, “and what would that be?”
He’d had a bit of a bite to his words before, but he seemed to deflate now. He looked down and mumbled something.
“What was that?” Logan asked. “I would appreciate knowing your evidence for your opinion.”
He stared at Logan’s knees instead of looking up at him, teeth clenched. “You should have killed me,” he said firmly.
Logan swallowed the sudden bile in his throat at the very thought. He was unsure if he was prepared for this conversation wherever it was going, and very much wished Virgil had decided to have this emotional incident when Patton was here as well. Or better yet when only Patton was here. “I disagree,” Logan said.
“Then you’re stupid,” Virgil said darkly.
Logan looked down at him for a moment and then pushed his chair back, slowly as to not startle him too bad. Just as slow, he folded himself down to his knees. Virgil wouldn’t look at him, eyes resolute on his own knees. He was tense as a bowstring ready to snap. He didn’t move even as Logan settled in front of him.
“I am glad that you are here,” Logan said. “That you are not dead. If that makes me stupid, then so be it.”
Virgil did not respond. He didn’t even twitch or move his eyes to look at Logan.

Logan sighed. “What is wrong?” he asked. “I know it’s been colder outside and that makes you increasingly anxious, but you are perfectly fine inside. You don’t need to worry here.”
He still did not respond.
“Virgil,” Logan called. “Look at me.”
For a moment he thought Virgil wouldn’t do so, but he twitched once and then slowly looked up at him.
Logan smiled at him softly. “It’s alright, Virgil.”
Virgil shook his head.
“Yes,” Logan said insistently. “I will make sure it’s alright.”
“You can’t promise that,” he finally said.
“I’m the prince,” Logan said with a half-smile. “I can promise whatever I like.”
“Something will go wrong,” Virgil insisted.
“What will?”
“Something,” Virgil said.
Logan raised one eyebrow. “You are worried about something, and you cannot even articulate what the threat is?” he asked.
“Something will happen,” he snapped. “Something will happen or someone will figure something out or I’ll mess up or something.”
“I will make sure nothing goes wrong,” Logan promised. “Even if it does, I’ll make sure nothing happens to you.”
“And if it’s because I mess up?” Virgil asked.
“I’ll still make sure nothing bad happens,” Logan said.
Virgil scoffed. “What if what I mess up makes you mad?”
“I don’t think you could do anything that would make me made mad enough not to want to help you.”
“I could,” he said darkly.
Logan paused. “You could,” he agreed. Logan was after all aware he was a trained assassin even though it was easy to forget, “but you also couldn’t.” He’d already proven that well enough to Logan.
Virgil stared at him. He did not deny it. “You don’t know me,” he said instead. “You don’t know that for sure.”
“I know plenty about you Virgil. Including that.”
He frowned and turned his face away to hide it in his knees.
58542
“Virgil,” Logan sighed after a few seconds. Virgil just went somehow even more tense than he’d been for this entire conversation, clenching his arms around his legs. Logan was silent for a couple of seconds hoping he’d calm down on his own a bit, but the opposite seemed to happen. His breath began to hitch after a few seconds and Logan noticed tears building in his eyes. Logan winced. He was not the right person for this, but he was the only one there. “It’s alright Virgil,” he said. “Can I help in any way?”
Virgil did not seem to hear him, caught up in his own head. His breath began to come faster by the moment, and Logan didn’t know how to calm him. What would Patton do?
Logan slowly reached out to put a hand in his hair much like he had earlier while seated at the desk. Logan quickly realized this was the wrong move as Virgil flinched back at being touched, head shooting up to look at him, or more accurately through him.
The next thing Logan knew there was a sharp sting on his cheek. It took a second for Logan to register what had just happened, but by the time he did, Virgil clearly had snapped back to himself and looked aghast.
“Virgil,” he said slowly, and that was clearly also the wrong thing to do because speaking startled Virgil out of his horrified daze, and he went scrambling out from under the desk. “Wait! Virgil!” he called, bumping his head against the top of the desk. It hurt much worse than the slap had a moment before had and the pain forced him to pause for a moment. By the time he managed to make it out from under the desk, Virgil was long gone.
  Chapter 40 (Thomas)
Thomas wasn’t sure what exactly he was supposed to do in this sort of situation. It had been three days since Logan had come to him in a panic saying that Virgil had ran off somewhere and he couldn’t find him. Apparently, the boy had been panicking and had accidentally slapped Logan before freaking out and running away. No one had seen him since, not for lack of trying. They had searched all over the castle and the grounds, but Virgil was nowhere to be found. Thomas just hoped he was still in the castle and hadn’t tried to go outside.
It had been blizzarding for the past week on and off. It made Thomas and everyone else worry about the child.
Logan and Patton said he did not like the cold and had refused to go outside, so that was a point in favor of him still being in the castle somewhere. Normally, the fact that they couldn’t find him in three days despite having many people looking for him, would indicate he was not still here, but thinking back to the hide-and-seek debacle, it was entirely likely he’d just stuffed himself in some secret passageway somewhere.
At least, that is what Thomas assured Logan to comfort him.
He sighed and got up from his desk where he’d been working on penning a letter to the Queen of Lamir to check in with her. The snow should be letting up in a couple of days long enough to get a letter out by means of carrier dove. He decided to take it to the dovecoat now and leave it with one of the handlers.
He left the room and wandered down the hallway, turning right instead of left like he normally would when he was going back to the royal wing. Instead, he took a path he didn’t often take that would lead to a staircase that let out at the door nearest the dovecoat.
As he passed through a hall with a bunch of old portraits, he suddenly remembered something from when he was young and stopped by a picture of a woman hanging across from a small bench. There was a secret passage there that he’d found when he was only 12 and had only ever shown to one other person before. It was just a room with nothing much special about it other than the fact that it was hidden away. Usually, he’d just pass it by, but today he was thinking about Virgil lost (hopefully) somewhere in the castle who liked secret passages.
It wouldn’t hurt to check one of the few secret areas Thomas knew about for signs of life, would it?
That in mind, he walked over to the painting and ran his hand along the side of it until he found a place he could push his fingers into. He pulled and the painting swung out to reveal a small door. He opened the door into a room a bit smaller than his own bedroom. Despite not having any heating elements since it was a secret room, it was still fairly warm since there were rooms around it that were heated.
Thomas reached over to fumble with the lights he’d sneakily installed when he was a child, and the space was suddenly filled with dim light.
He closed the door behind himself and stepped into the room. He glanced around for anything out of place, though it had been a while since he’d been in here. He squinted at the very limited amount of furniture and had just walked across the room to look at an old chest when he heard a noise from somewhere in the room.
Thomas looked towards where the noise was coming from and was surprised to hear the sound of something sliding right before a head of dark hair popped up. Virgil lithely pulled himself out of the hole in the ground and shut it behind him.
Thomas froze. Sure, he’d come in here specifically to look for signs of Virgil, but he had not been prepared for Virgil to suddenly crawl out of the floor. He hadn’t even realized there was a second entrance in this room.
Virgil didn’t notice him from Thomas’s spot on the other side of the room. Thomas wasn’t sure what to do. Virgil was always quick to startle, especially around Thomas. If he said something, surely the boy would disappear back down the tunnel he’d just left.
Virgil took a few all but silent steps towards the side of the room opposite from Thomas.
59610
Thomas was still trying to figure out what to do when Virgil suddenly stopped. He tilted his head to look up at the lights Thomas had turned on when entering the room. Then his eyes shot to Thomas.
“Uh,” Thomas said. “Hi.” Silence. “Please don’…”
Virgil turned tail and sprinted to the opposite side of the room, scaling an old bookshelf that tottered dangerously under his weight.
“… t run.”
He had the instinct to chase after him, worried that there was another entrance he’d dart through and be gone forever, but he stifled it. That would just terrify the poor thing even more.
“Uh,” Thomas said, not entirely sure he wasn’t speaking to an empty room as he could not see Virgil anymore. “It’s okay.” He paused. “Logan’s not mad. No one is. Both him and Patton are very worried though. We’d all appreciate if you came out.” He paused again and only got silence in return.
Cautiously he took a couple of steps towards the other side of the room.
“Please?” he said.
When there was again no response, he took a couple more steps towards the bookshelf until he was standing directly in front of it. He just barely managed to catch a glint of the dim room lights reflecting off a pair of dark brown eyes.
He was not just talking to an empty room then.
“Hey there,” he said softly. The eyes disappeared immediately, but now Thomas knew they were there. “Alright.” He wished he could get someone else for this conversation, but there was no way he could leave and come back to Virgil still there. Instead, he took a seat on the ground a couple of feet away from the bookshelf. He thought for a moment. “You know, I found this place myself,” he said. “I never knew that trap door was there though. You’re pretty good at finding tunnels.” He leaned back a bit, trying to catch a glimpse of the top of the bookshelf.
“I used to keep some food here at one point, but I’m afraid even if I left anything it’d be a little bad at this point.” Thomas thought for a moment. “I hope you’ve eaten something recently. The kitchen is open for you whenever you want food, though I’m sure Patton’s mom would like to make you something special. She’s been worried. You know how she is when people miss meals. Everyone’s been worried.”
He let it hang in silence again, and to his surprise there was just a bit of shifting from the top of the bookshelf. “Why?” Virgil’s voice asked.
“Well,” Thomas answered, “because a lot of people around here care about you.”
“I hit Logan,” he said, clearly assuming that Thomas didn’t know.
“I know,” Thomas said.
“He’s the prince,” Virgil pointed out.
“Maybe,” Thomas said, “but he’s also your friend. He cares about you more than he does about getting slapped once when you were clearly in distress. In fact, he was never mad at all about it. He was just worried about how you responded. It seems like you didn’t come here from the best place and we were a little worried we might not see you again if you got too startled.”
“That doesn’t make sense,” Virgil said.
“It does to me,” Thomas said. “I wish it did to you.”
Silence once again greeted his words.
“Are you going to come down from there at some point?”
“I don’t really have a choice, do I?”
Thomas shrugged. “Well, I’m not going to be leaving until you do,” he said.
“So eventually the royal guards are just going to tear me down,” he concluded.
“Well, no one knows I’m here,” Thomas said. “I came on a whim. The only person I ever told about this place is already dead. I doubt they’ll find us.”
“You’re the king,” Virgil said. “You shouldn’t be somewhere that people don’t know where you all. What if…?”
“Hmm?” Thomas prompted.
“What if an assassin attacks you or something?”
“I doubt an assassin is going to come find me in this little room no one knows about but us,” Thomas said with a smile.
There was a pause. “Your as bad as Logan with your safety,” he grumbled and Thomas just chuckled. Then, after a moment, Virgil said, “Are you really not mad that I hit your son.”
“No, Virgil,” Thomas said. “I know it was an accident. I understand.”
He didn’t respond for a long moment, and Thomas was content to wait for him to think it through for however long he needed.
“Logan really isn’t mad?” Virgil asked.
“No,” Thomas promised. “He’s not.”
And then, blessedly, he heard movement from the top of the bookshelf. Virgil slowly climbed down, and Thomas didn’t dare stand up or really move at all other than breathing.
“Ready to come out of the tunnels now?” he asked after a few minutes of stalemate while Virgil watched him like he expected Thomas to leap forward and bite him.
He nodded. “Yeah, sure.”
“Okay,” said Thomas. “Good.”
Chapter 41 Arc III: Bonding with the King (Virgil)
Virgil, despite deciding to believe the king when he said he said no one was angry with him, was still half surprised when he wasn’t immediately thrown into the dungeon. He didn’t even call the guards. Instead, he just calmly led Virgil down a set of stairs with a warm, not restraining, hand on his shoulder.
Virgil didn’t know what to think. He didn’t understand how he could not be in trouble for smacking the prince, but he was also cold, tired, and hungry from his days spent in the castle walls. He’d once been used to being all of those things, but now after only living in the castle for a little over a month, they stung a little harder.
He’d memorized enough about the castle layout to know they were going in the direction of the kitchen. He also knew that it was midafternoon between lunch and supper being served. There weren’t many people in their path except for the guards and they didn’t even give him a second glance.
The king took Virgil through the same side entrance Patton and Logan often used instead of through the dining hall. Patton’s mom’s office door was closed and instead of going all the way to the kitchen, the king paused to knock on it.
“Helen,” the king called through the door. “Would you mind coming out here please?”
“Just a moment,” was called back through the door and after just a few seconds the door was opening. Her eyes landed on him immediately looking seemingly relieved. “Virgil,” she said. “Goodness where have you been? Patton’s been worried sick.”
Virgil bit his lip, unsure what to say to that. He’d assumed Patton would be mad at him too when he learned he’d hit Logan, but then again, according to the king not even Logan was mad.
“Would you mind making something for him to eat?” the king asked.
Her eyes snapped to him. “Oh, yes, of course. Virgil, sweetie, what do you want?”
 Virgil just shrugged.
“Ham sandwich for now,” she said studying him, “and then I’ll make something more for dinner. Let me go grab your meal preference cards.” She stepped back into her office and grabbed a little box off of her desk full of the little cards she always sent with and new food she served Virgil, so he could rank them.
Virgil watched, confused. He never did quite understand Helen with her endless willingness to feed him and to get his opinion about what she fed him with. She always reminded him of Patton with how kind she often was, though she was a little stricter than Patton could ever have the heart to be.
There was no sternness to her now, however. She was fussing over him as she led them to the kitchen and started warming water for tea before grabbing the ingredients needed for the promised ham sandwich.
She made him clean his hands of the dirt and dust they’d acquired from days crawling through secret passageways before handing him the sandwich. Thomas at one point stepped out of the kitchen for a few moments but was back quickly with a smile. Virgil smiled back at him hesitantly. He was still surprised he was in the kitchen drinking warm tea and eating a sandwich as the head chef personally fretted over him.
The king also accepted a mug of tea and didn’t even watch over it closely despite Virgil sitting right there in poisoning distance. Instead of looking worried or angry when he noticed Virgil staring at him and his mug, he simply smiled softly and ask him if he needed more tea.
This man… was an idiot.
Virgil had thought that Logan wasn’t careful about his own personal safety, but apparently Logan had actually improved upon his family’s habit of being reckless. Virgil would have to complement him and provide him with more opportunities for growth if he was that willing to grow and adapt.
…If Logan didn’t hate him now.
Thomas said he wasn’t mad, but he could be lying or wrong. Virgil had hit Logan. He knew he was never fond of people who hit him. Virgil hadn’t meant to do it, but he still had. Or even if he wasn’t actively mad, there was the possibility that he wouldn’t like Virgil anymore. That was almost worse because people who were mad might eventually calm down and forgive you, but if someone just decides emotionlessly they don’t like you anymore, that’s a lot harder to reverse.
Logan had always been nice to him despite being a prince who didn’t need to give him the time of day and despite knowing why Virgil had come here.
Logan was his friend. He didn’t want to lose that.
He finished off the ham sandwich pretty quickly and Patton’s mom almost immediately set down a plate of cheese and crackers.
“Thank you,” Virgil said softly.
“Of course,” Ms. Heart said, and Virgil jumped a bit in surprise when a hand touched his head, but calmed down after just a moment. It wasn’t that different than Patton, though he wasn’t that used to adults touching him. At least not gently or at all in the castle. “I’m glad you’re okay.” The hand stayed in his hair for only a second longer before pulling away. “Hmm,” she said. “Have you been living in the walls perchance?”
 Virgil nodded at her.
“Ah,” she said, wiping off her hand on her apron. “Perhaps a bath would be in order after you finish eating.”
“Yes, ma’am,” he replied.
“More tea?”
He nodded again and she moved to take his mug over to the kettle. He turned to pop one of the crackers with cheese into his mouth and was still chewing when the nearest door suddenly sprung open.
He flinched, looking up to see Logan in the doorway, breathing like he’d run all the way from the other side of the castle. “Virgil,” he said sounding relieved. He’d crossed the room before Virgil had a chance to get anxious and was wrapping him up in a hug before he could do more than lightly flinch in surprise. “Thank goodness you’re okay. Where have you been?”
 “In the walls,” Virgil replied.
Logan rubbed a circle into his back. “I’m sorry,” he said.
Virgil jerked in surprise. “Why are you sorry.”
“I made you run away,” he said. “You were scared of me.”
“I hit you,” Virgil said confused.
“It was an accident. You were having a bad day and I touched you without permission. It was my fault.”
“I…” Virgil said, “but…”
“I’m not going to be angry when it was just an accident, Virgil,” Logan said.
Virgil didn’t know what to say. He tucked his head against Logan’s shoulder and sniffled a bit. “Sorry anyway,” he said.
“It’s okay,” Logan said. Virgil felt a kiss being pressed to his forehead. “Patton and I were really worried.”
“Oh,” he said. Tears started to leak from his eyes as he sniffled more. Logan just held hugged him tighter. “Sorry,” he said again.
“Hush,” was the response. The hug continued for a long few moments before Logan pulled back. “You are very dirty,” he commented.
“You’re a bit dirty too,” Ms. Heart pointed out. Logan glanced down at his front. You could see an outline of Virgil’s body on his clothes.
“Ah,” he said. “It seems I am.” He seemed amused though, and honestly if he wasn’t going to be mad at Virgil for slapping him and then running away and hiding, he probably wasn’t going to be mad about that.
The king and Patton’s mom also didn’t seem unhappy with him getting the prince messy when he glanced at them. Ms. Heart seemed amused and the king was just smiling.
Virgil felt himself calming down more than he had in days, assured that Logan didn’t hate him and tentatively trusting that neither of the adults planned to lash out at him anytime soon. Ms. Heart handed him his refilled mug of tea and pointed him back at the food. Virgil relaxed fully into his chair.
Until, of course, the door blasted back open, word having gotten to Patton who proceeded to strangle him with a hug and cry at him loudly, but that was okay too.
  Chapter 42 (Patton)
“Come on,” Patton said. “You’re already all dressed up.”
Virgil made a dissatisfied noise like a cat that had just been picked up from its spot on a heated blanket.
“We’ll barely be outside five minutes,” Patton said. “You won’t even notice the cold.”
“Will so,” Virgil argued back.
Virgil’s return to the castle proper had been very relieving. Everyone had been content to let him curl up on the floor near the fireplace and sleep for the past couple of weeks, but life did move on and Patton and Logan had talked. They had agreed that Virgil’s constant anxiety about the weather probably wasn’t good for him.
They’d brought it up to Virgil gently and, while they’d had to dial it back on things like actually playing in the snow, the suggestion that they take the short trip from the castle proper to the horse stables was met with some interest. However, now that the time had come to make the trek, he seemed to be having doubts.
“Honestly,” Logan said. “I don’t think you’ll even feel the cold in that get up.”
They had, indeed covered the boy from head to toe. He currently looked a couple of inches taller and wider than he actually was bundled up with every piece of extra snow gear they could find.
He looked adorable with only his eyes uncovered even if said eyes were glaring at them both. However, Patton was a little worried he’d overheat if they didn’t leave soon.
“I don’t like snow,” Virgil said.
“We know, Virgil,” Logan said. That was the problem. They were hoping that a little minimal exposure would help him calm down just a bit. “The path’s been cleared of snow and ice though and it isn’t that much of a walk. You’ll be fine and then we’ll be able to look at all of the horses.”
Virgil still looked unconvinced.
“Just half an hour, Virgil, please,” Logan said.
 “…Fine,” Virgil relented.
“Great,” said Patton, grabbing his coat sleeve and tugging him towards the door. Logan followed behind and Princess Marisol seeing they were going somewhere, got up and padded after them.
They made it all the way to the door nearest the stable. Patton could see when he opened it that the path they were to take was well cleared. Virgil still did not appear enthused. He glared at the outside like it had a knife.
Princess Marisol, for her part, saw Patton open the door, hissed, and abandoned them to strut off towards the kitchen.
“She knows what she’s talking about,” mumbled Virgil.
Patton sighed.
“Come on Virgil, I promise it won’t be that bad.” Patton offered a gloved hand. “You can hold my hand the whole way.”
Virgil was still frowning up a storm that would rival the one that had caused the snow in the first place, but he did take Patton’s hand. Patton used his grip on his hand to pull him forward through the door. It was still very chilly, Patton thought as they walked outside. Patton had chosen a coat that was a bit lighter since they were only walking to the stable and the wind bit him through it. He really hoped Virgil’s outfit was warm enough to keep him from freaking out.
Luckily, it did seem to be keeping him warm enough because, while he was tense, he still let Patton lead him forward.
They made it to the stable quicker than usual since all three of them were quickening their pace. Patton gave a sigh of relief when he entered the stable and the warmer air inside of it. The stable wasn’t as warm as the castle, but it was warm enough that most of the stable hands only worked in light coats most of the winter. At least, they did inside the stable.
The head stable hand had already been warned about their visit beforehand and was waiting for the three of them at the door.
“Good morning,” she greeted them, and… Virgil was already hiding himself behind Patton’s back.
“Hi!” Patton said cheerfully. He stepped to the side, so Virgil was no longer hidden. Virgil glared, reaching out to grab the edge of Patton’s sleeve and tugging on it in discontent. “This is Loraine, Virgil,” Patton said, nodding at her. When he glanced her way, he became a lot more shy, looking down at her feet instead of at her face. “She takes care of the horses. Say hello.”
“…Hello,” Virgil said quietly.
“Hi,” she said. “I hear you wanted to see the horses.”
“Yes, ma’am.”
“Well, we have plenty for you to meet and they’re mostly all inside because of the cold. Usually in the summer most want to spend a lot of time in the pasture. Let me show you around.”
Loraine showed them around the stable a bit even though Patton and Logan already knew where everything was. Virgil slowly got a little bit more comfortable, even asking a couple of questions unprompted. Surprisingly these weren’t many basic questions about horses like Patton had mostly expected. On the contrary, he seemed to know a good amount of horses already.
“Have you worked with horses before?” Loraine asked a bit into the tour after Virgil expressed interest in what they were feeding some of the older horses.
“I used to help take care of horses sometimes when people came to visit the orphanage,” he said. “They’re nice.”
“Do you ride?” Loraine asked.
Virgil shook his head. “I just fed them and cleaned up after them,” he said.
“Well, maybe you can try to learn when it gets a bit warmer,” she offered. “It’s a lot of fun.”
He nodded. “That would be nice,” he said.
After that, she mostly let them wander around looking at different horses in the stalls. She them feed some of the ones who were gentler and didn’t have a specific diet.
It was about 25 minutes into their adventure and while Virgil obviously liked the horses, Patton could already tell his anxiety was rising every time he took his glove off to feed a horse and it hit the chilly air. Patton glanced at Logan.
“Right,” Logan said. “We should probably be heading back inside, but I would like to stop by and see Mr. Apples before leaving. Otherwise, he will be cross with me.”
“Mr. Apples?” Virgil asked.
“He’s one of the horses,” Logan said, moving to where the different treats were kept for the horses.
“Why do you need to see him in particular?”
Logan paused, his hand hovering briefly over the container of red apples before reaching in to grab one. “He was my Pa’s horse,” he said. “He likes when I visit him.”
“Logan’s the only one he likes visiting him,” Loraine added as she started to lead them towards where Mr. Apples’ stall was.
Patton had learned long ago that Mr. Apples could be a bit crabby. He wasn’t as mean to Patton as he was to some people, but he wasn’t exactly nice either. Patton tended to keep his distance whenever Logan went to visit.
Now, he stood on the other side of the hall from where Mr. Apples was as Logan stepped forward to greet him.
Logan spoke to him softly for a bit and he nuzzled his face against Logan’s shoulder with a huff. Eventually, he offered a piece of apple which Mr. Apple happily took.
“Can I say hello to him?” Virgil asked.
Logan glanced back at him. “Sure,” he said, “though be careful. He doesn’t like… anyone besides me.”
Virgil nodded and stepped forward cautiously. “Hello,” Virgil said. Mr. Apples tilted his head to look at Virgil. There were a couple of seconds of silence and then Mr. Apple’s snorted softly. Virgil took that as permission to stretch out a hand.
“Wait,” Logan said. “He bites actually and…”
63486
Mr. Apples pressed his nose to Virgil’s hand softly and Virgil gently stroked it a couple of times.
“Huh,” said Loraine. “You’re officially the third person he’s ever liked, and you could say Prince Logan was cheating since he met him as a baby.”
“Really?” Virgil asked. “He seems nice enough.”
Loraine rolled her eyes. Patton noticed she was standing a good distance away from the stall herself. “Oh no,” she said. “Trust me. He’s a bastard to everyone else.”
Virgil just frowned and pet the horse’s nose again. Mr. Apples leaned forward to nibble at his hair a bit.
Logan smiled at him and handed him one of the apple pieces to feed Mr. Apples which Virgil offered to the horse on a flat hand. “Red apples are his favorite,” he told Virgil. “He refuses to eat green.”
Logan and Virgil finished feeding Mr. Apples his treat and then it was time for Virgil to face the cold once again to return to the castle. Patton hoped this positive experience from going outside would make him more open to it in the future.
  Chapter 43 (Logan)
Logan woke once again being strangled by an assassin. He sighed and attempted to squirm away. Virgil made an unhappy grumbling noise at the movement and squeezed him tighter. “I am just,” Logan said, shoving at the arm around him, “trying to get into a position where I can breathe.”
Unfortunately, there was no reasoning with an unconscious Virgil. Getting into an upright position was a battle and the boy was laying across his lap by the time he managed it, clutching one of Logan’s arms.
Logan huffed at his sleeping form, reaching over with his free arm to switch on his bedside lamp.
Despite how warm the room was, Logan assumed the temperature outside was extremely cold today. Virgil seemed to have some internal thermostat that seemed to know how cold it was outside even while snug in Logan’s bedroom. The tighter the boy clung in his sleep, the colder Logan knew it must be. Logan looked down at Virgil’s face. He and Patton had wanted to convince Virgil to spend a bit of time outside today, but if it was as cold as Virgil’s behavior indicated, perhaps they should wait for another day.
Logan reached over for the book on his nightstand that he’d learned to keep here for this exact reason.
His reading speed had actually increased since Virgil’s arrival at the castle which was impressive. He’d only gotten this book two days before and was worried he’d finish it before Virgil woke this morning.
Luckily, he was incorrect, and Virgil did begin to stir a bit earlier than he usually did. He glanced down from his book when he felt Virgil shift only to find his eyes were open and staring at Logan.
“Good morning,” Logan greeted. Virgil’s fingers squeezed Logan’s arms lightly much like one would expect the cat currently sleeping soundly on Virgil’s pillow to knead its chosen person.
 “Hi,” he said. “Book?”
“It’s a book about various trade agreements that happened in the last 500 years,” Logan said, knowing what he was asking.
“Interesting?” Virgil asked.
Logan smiled a bit. “You would likely not be particularly interested since you do not already have knowledge of the players nor the politics of trade agreements in general.”
“Oh, okay,” Virgil said with a yawn.
Logan felt fondness warm his chest. “I can read you a different book if you would like,” he offered.
Virgil eyed the book in Logan’s hand. “You’re almost done with that one,” he pointed out. “You can finish it first.”
“You just want an excuse to continue to lay in bed,” Logan accused fondly.
Virgil did not even bother arguing, shifting a bit so he was laying with his head on his own pillow, but curling into Logan’s side. He was calm this morning which was honestly an odd thing. He was rarely truly calm while awake and even in sleep his face was sometimes pinched in tension. Logan and Patton’s plans for exposure therapy to cold weather seemed to help his resting anxiety level a bit, but it was still much higher than it was for normal people. Right now though, he seemed fully content.
Logan was glad he could feel that comfortable near him, perhaps even comfortable because Logan was near. It was a striking contrast to how he’d been when he’d come here or even how he’d been when he’d accidently slapped Logan. He felt a surge of… something more than the standard sympathy one might feel for someone when he thought of Virgil’s fear and what had transpired to cause it. It was a bit like anger, but not quite. He could not quite put a name to it, but he did know it made him want to make sure nothing bad ever happened to him again. He would ensure nothing bad ever happened to him again no matter what it took.
Logan read for a little while longer. Virgil was still and calm most of the time, but Logan was pretty sure he didn’t go back to sleep. He shifted to look up at Logan when he set the book on the nightstand.
“Would you like to go to the library with me this morning?” Logan asked. “I need a new book and perhaps we could get you something too for your reading lessons. I was thinking we could go to the main library.” He had never taken Virgil there yet as there did tend to be a few more people than the more secluded library Logan favored. Yet, he’d been getting marginally more comfortable in small crowds, and Logan thought he might like to see it.
“Sure,” Virgil agreed easily. “After breakfast though?”
“Of course,” Logan agreed. “We don’t want Ms. Heart to get on us about your eating schedule once more.”
Virgil nodded in agreement and climbed out of bed to get dressed. They had a short meal at the dinning hall. Virgil was still adamant that Logan did not eat any of the muffins set out on the table, and with Patton still reportedly in bed, Logan did not have nearly enough social prowess on his side to argue with him this morning. Instead, they only ate things straight from the kitchen. Virgil still got a card with his meal Logan had to fill out for him at the end. As always, he ranked everything on the plate a ‘5/5.’
The library wasn’t too far from the main dining hall. It was in the opposite direction of the way they would go if they were going back to the royal wing past the ballroom and through the entryway. In the summer, they would have gone through the courtyard. In fact, if it had been just Logan, he would have ran across the open area quickly despite not having a coat, but with Virgil in tow, he chose to walk all the way around. Though honestly, since it was Virgil’s first time entering the library, it would be more impressive entering it from its main entrance than from the side one that castle residents in a hurry would use.
He looked over at Virgil as he pushed open the library doors to see his reaction. His eyes widened a bit as he saw the huge room with the many shelves.
“It’s impressive, isn’t it?” Logan asked with a smile.
“You have two stories of books?” Virgil asked, looking at the spiral staircase that led to the second floor, awed. “I didn’t even… This is more books than I’ve ever seen in my life in one room.
“And these are just the things available to the general public. There are also record rooms only used by certain people and rooms with restricted book access based on skill, like some magic books.”
“That’s a lot…” Virgil said. What was maybe insecurity flashed through his eyes.
“It’s an overwhelming amount of knowledge, but different people can find what they need,” Logan said, pulling him out of the doorway and towards where they keep the children’s books. “Here, let’s go to books you can try to read yourself and then we’ll find some books you would be interested in that I can read to you.” They stopped at a shelf. “These would be perhaps just a bit beyond your current reading level, but they would be a good challenge, I believe. Pick whichever you like.”
Virgil took a moment to stare at the pictures on the book. He squinted at the titles for a bit longer and asked Logan what a few said before choosing a few from the shelf. Two of them were about different crops and one was about a family of foxes.
“Are those three enough?” Logan asked.
“Yeah, I think so,” Virgil replied.
“Do you want to explore the library a bit or just get a book for me to read you and leave?” Logan asked, not wanting to overwhelm him.
“I’d like to look around a bit,” Virgil replied.
“Okay.”
Logan had frequented the main library when he’d been younger. Though he often spent his time now in the smaller library that had been tailored to his specific interests, he still came to the main library fairly frequently. He knew many good places to sit with a book. There were nice window seats that looked out into the courtyard and a corner near a small fireplace. Logan showed him the door that led to the courtyard and where the door to the more restricted books were, though they didn’t go into any of them right now.
Virgil seemed to like the library well enough, following Logan around willingly. Logan did have to pull him away from a few places when he looked a bit too intently at some high, but sturdy bookshelves. And the chandelier.
He did look like he was constantly straddling the line between being in awe of and being overwhelmed by the size of the library, so Logan decided to end the tour after a bit and work on picking out a book.
“What type of book would you like to read?” Logan asked.
Virgil shrugged. “I don’t know,” he said. “Whatever you think is best is fine. I wouldn’t know where to start.”
“But I’ve chosen every book I’ve read to you so far,” Logan said with a frown. “We should get something tailored to your interests.”
“I don’t have interests, Logan,” Virgil said with an eyeroll.
65264
“You have some interests,” Logan said.
Virgil raised an eyebrow.
“You like climbing,” Logan said, “and… horses. You and Mr. Deknis seem to get along.”
“Are there books about climbing?” Virgil asked.
“There are books about everything,” Logan claimed.
“Bullshit.”
Logan narrowed his eyes. “Careful with that language. Just because Patton isn’t here doesn’t mean you get to be crude.”
Virgil rolled his eyes.
“I will tattle.”
“Fuck,” said Virgil.
Logan shook his head in exasperation but couldn’t help but smile a bit. There was something about Virgil when he felt comfortable enough to be slightly unruly that made Logan happy. It felt like a glimpse of the actual Virgil beneath his usual caution towards the world.
“How about we ask the librarian if there are any books on climbing,” Logan suggested. “Dr. Macey knows where all of the books would be. I can introduce you to them.”
Virgil didn’t look particularly pleased about meeting a new person, but he also didn’t seem overly distressed by the thought, so Logan tugged him along to the librarian’s small office where Logan had seen them disappear a few minutes ago. He knocked on the door.
It swung open a few seconds later and Dr. Macey’s head poked out. “Good morning, Prince Logan,” they said. They glanced at Virgil, “and, Virgil, I would assume.”
“I’ve mentioned you,” Logan said because he saw Virgil immediately start to freak out about a random person knowing his name. Though, honestly, he was sure Dr. Macey had heard about him from other sources as well. He turned back to the librarian. “I was wondering if you could help Virgil pick out a book. He hasn’t gotten many chances to read in his life and isn’t sure what type of thing he’d like. Also, if it could somehow involve climbing to prove a point, that would be appreciated.”
“Climbing, eh?” Dr. Macey asked, thinking for a couple of seconds. “I think I can probably find something.”
Dr. Macey spent a bit of time looking through the shelves. They made small talk with Virgil, and while Virgil seemed a bit guarded (likely because Dr. Macey was asking questions about him trying to figure out more about what type of book he liked), he seemed fairly calm. Logan was pleased to think he liked the library. Maybe when he was a bit better at reading and he’d adjusted more to the size of the room and the concept that other castle residents could come around, he’d want to spend some time down here.
Eventually, Dr. Macey picked out three options and let Virgil choose which one he wanted.
65705
There was a fantasy book, an adventure story, and a mystery story.
“All of these have to do with climbing?” Virgil asked skeptically.
“There’s at least one good long climb in each,” Dr. Macey promised with a smile.
Virgil studied the books for a long moment. Eventually, he pointed to one that had the title, “Into the Mist,” which was the fantasy book.
“Good choice,” Dr. Macey said. Logan was certain they would have said that regardless of which Virgil chose, but Virgil still lit up slightly at the praise. The librarian handed the book to Virgil and set the other two aside to reshelve later.
“Thank you, Dr. Macey,” Logan said.
“If you need anything else, let me know,” they said.
“I think that’s it for today,” Logan said. “Let’s go back upstairs Virgil.”
Virgil nodded, clutching his chosen book, and they left the library.
  Chapter 44 (Thomas)
Loraine had called Thomas down to the stables to talk about a concern that had cropped up about their grain stores. They’d found mold in one of the grain bins which had, of course, soiled everything stored there. Luckily it ended up being one of the smaller grain bins, but it still provided some concern for getting through the winter. As it was, they would be able to make it through, but a lot less comfortably.
Thomas mostly trusted the three who ran the animal husbandry on the castle’s lands to deal with it, but he still provided his opinion when asked.
The meeting had taken a few hours. When he’d come down, the sun had been shining. It had been still cold, but not as freezing the last few days, though he was under no illusion that winter was anywhere near over. A point which was emphasized when he stepped out of Loraine’s office and glanced out of a window only to see what appeared to be a blizzard happening outside.
Great. He wasn’t exactly enthused about walking back to the castle in that. Wanting to delay it as long as possible, he turned away from the window and walked towards the other end of the stable.
He grabbed an apple along the way, intending to feed it to Mr. Apples while convincing himself to make the jaunt back up to the castle. To his surprise, Mr. Apple’s head didn’t pop into the hall upon hearing someone enter his domain (aka the hall outside of his stall). This was odd as Mr. Apples was a territorial bastard who was always sure to be prepared to confront anyone who came within range or eat an apple if the person invading his space happened to be one of the few he wouldn’t attempt to bite on sight. Yet, no white nose popped into sight.
When Thomas approached the stall, he figured out why. There was someone in the stall, but unlike most instances of someone being in a stall with Mr. Apples, the person was not being bitten, spit at, or anything else. Instead, Mr. Apples was standing there calm as day as Virgil ran a brush over his flank.
Thomas stared at them for a moment. He found himself wondering if Mr. Apples had died and someone had replaced him with another white horse so the royal family didn’t get upset like one might replace a child’s dead goldfish if it dies while they’re away.
However, then, Mr. Apples realized he was there. The disdain in his expression upon catching sight of Thomas told him this was no imposter. He apparently by some miracle had just found another person he liked. Which… did pose an issue for Thomas.
Virgil had calmed down around his presence a bit ever since Thomas had found him hiding in the castle, but Thomas wasn’t sure how he would feel about being confronted by Thomas’s presence without warning. In the past, he’d been rather jumpy. If Thomas startled a person Mr. Apples liked in front of Mr. Apples, the tentative peace between Thomas and the horse would surely be over.
He debated simply walking away like Mr. Apples’ expression was insisting, but before he could, Virgil glanced up at him. Thankfully, he didn’t jump. He looked at Thomas for a second, seeming a bit unsure. They hadn’t been alone since he’d stopped being completely terrified of Thomas’s existence after all, but eventually settled on saying, “Uh, hello your majesty.”
“Hello Virgil,” Thomas replied with a small smile. “You can just call me Thomas if you’d like.”
Virgil didn’t seem to know what to say to that, so Thomas dropped it for now.
“Mr. Apples seems to like you,” he said.
“He’s a good horse,” Virgil said, patting Mr. Apples’ side. Mr. Apples sent Thomas a smug look. Well, this… was a very familiar conversation.
Having learned long ago not to bother arguing his case, Thomas just said, “He doesn’t like many people.”
“Logan said that,” Virgil said.
“Where is Logan?” Thomas asked, curious. Usually, Virgil wasn’t too far from him or Patton, but Thomas hadn’t seen a sign of them in the stable.
“He’s studying in his library,” Virgil said, “but I wanted to come to the stable since the weather was slightly nicer.”
“And Patton?”
“He had a meeting with your advisor.”
“Makes sense,” Thomas said. He was glad Virgil was apparently comfortable enough now to go places without one of the other boys. He reluctantly supposed he had Mr. Apples to thank for that. “I brought him and apple. Would you like to feed it to him?”
“Sure,” Virgil said.
Thomas smiled and handed over one of the apple slices over the stall gate to Virgil who fed it to Mr. Apples. Once the horse was finished with that slice, Thomas handed him another.
“Don’t you want to feed it some to him?” Virgil asked.
“He’ll enjoy it much more from you,” Thomas replied.
Virgil frowned, but Mr. Apples threw his head in agreement. Virgil ended up feeding the rest of the apple to the horse.
“Would you like to walk back to the castle with me?” Thomas asked once the horse was busy chowing down on his last slice.
“Sure,” Virgil replied. Thomas smiled at him and helped him put away the brush and other supplies he’d been using on Mr. Apples.
Everything went smoothly until he and Virgil moved to leave the stable. The second that Virgil’s eyes saw the weather conditions outside he paused. Thomas did have to admit that he also wasn’t a fan of what was going on outside. The castle was only a dark blob in the distance when the snow was falling that fast.
Yet, there was something different about Virgil’s expression. It didn’t just seem like reluctance to get cold and wet. Thomas had unfortunately seen Virgil terrified a few times before and it was definitely fear flashing in his eyes right now.
“Are you alright?” Thomas asked softly. Virgil jumped at his voice, but for once Thomas didn’t think he had himself to blame for that.
“I…” Virgil hesitated. “I’m just going to stay here for a while.”
Thomas looked at him and then at the snow outside. “You don’t like the snow, I assume?”
Virgil curled one arm around his waist, gripping the opposite wrist. He shrugged one shoulder. “Bad experience.”
“Oh,” Thomas said, “I see.” The child was looking away from Thomas as well as from the snow outside. His eyes were fixed on a bale of hay. “I guess we’ll just stay out here for a bit.”
Virgil’s eyes shot back to him. “You don’t have to stay,” he said. “It’s fine.”
Thomas shrugged. “I didn’t really want to go out in that anyway.”
Virgil bit his lip. “You’re king,” he said. “You have important things to do. You don’t need to sit out in a horse stable with me because of my issues.”
“You’ll be amazed how much time I’ve spent sitting in a horse stable in my life, king or not,” Thomas said with a rueful smile.
Virgil still seemed unsure. “You don’t have to,” he said. There was no way Thomas was going to leave a child who was afraid of snowstorms for whatever reason alone in a horse stable even if he wouldn’t technically be alone with all of the workers.
“It’s fine,” said Thomas. “I’m sure the stable hands would be willing to share some of the tea in their breakroom with us. We’ll wait for a bit and then see if the storm decides to let up later.”
“If you’re sure,” Virgil said.
“I am,” Thomas said with a smile before leading him towards the staff breakroom and away from the sight of the snow falling outside.
  Chapter 45 (Virgil)
The king took him a little room in the center of the stables. There were two people sitting in the room when they entered. They looked up at their entrance, but didn’t spare them a second glance, going back to playing a game with cards. This both made sense because the king should be able to go wherever he wanted without question and didn’t make sense because Virgil had assumed most people working for the castle would jump into asking if the king needed anything when he entered a room.
Instead, the king walked over to a small counter at the side of the room.
If Virgil did not know that he was the king, he probably wouldn’t have been able to tell. He’d dressed to be in a horse stable today. There was no crown or any jewelry really in sight except for a necklace. His clothing was perhaps of better quality than most who worked in a stable would wear every day, but not by a large margin. He could have just been a stable manager or something if Virgil did not know better.
He glanced back at Virgil once he’d grabbed a few clean cups. “What would you like to drink?” he asked.
 “I don’t care,” Virgil said.
“Have you tried hot apple cider before?” the king asked.
Virgil shook his head.
“Well, it looks like they have some cider being kept warm here,” he said touching a small barrel that was sitting on the counter. There was a slight glow to the barrel that Virgil recognized as a heating enchantment.
“Sure,” Virgil said. “I like apples.”
The king smiled and turned to pour out a glass of the drink through a spigot on the side of the barrel. He offered it to Virgil. The king was serving Virgil a drink. That was… really weird. He was a weird king.
He took the cup. It was warm from the drink and Virgil felt some of the tension that had been in his shoulders since he’d seen the amount of snow outside release as his fingers warmed up.
“It has more spices than things like apple juice,” the king said. “Mostly cinnamon, but also things like cloves, ginger, and nutmeg.”
Virgil didn’t really know what any of those things tasted like off of the top of his head other than cinnamon and, of course, apples. He took a cautious sip anyway.
“Like it?” the king asked, a smile growing on his face quickly in response to whatever face Virgil was making.
 Virgil nodded vigorously.
“Good,” the king said with a chuckle. He turned to get another glass of the apple cider for himself. “Let’s sit,” he said motioning with his head to a couch. It was the only free seating available other than one extra chair at the table where the two stable hands were playing cards.
Virgil did as he said, walking over to the couch and taking a seat. It was an old, but comfortable couch. Most of the things in this room seemed pretty old, though all in good condition. It made sense that they wouldn’t want to have a bunch of new furniture when people were just using it to take a break between cleaning horse stalls.
It was a nice little room all the same and warmer than the rest of the building. The two stable hands had slung their light coats over the backs of their chairs and the king also took his off before sitting. Virgil kept his on.
There were a few hooks where it looked like the workers kept their heavier winter coats for when they left the stable as well as some bags and a couple of paintings.
“That one looks like Mr. Apples,” Virgil pointed out.
The king glanced at the painting. “It is Mr. Apples actually,” he told Virgil.
“He was absolutely impossible to keep still for it. He went back in forth from trying to bite the artist to trying to show off for his owner. I’m pretty sure the artist made his eyes red if you look close enough just to express his displeasure somehow.”
“Logan?” Virgil asked.
“Oh, no,” said the king. “That was when my husband was alive.”
Virgil immediately internally cringed. Externally he said a quick “Sorry.”
“Don’t be sorry,” said the king. “He’s not a taboo topic to me.”
Virgil searched his face, but he really didn’t seem mad. There was maybe a bit of sadness around his expression, but he wasn’t angry.
“Logan always seems upset when he mentions him.”
“He’s mentioned him to you?” the king asked, sounding surprised.
“A few times,” Virgil said. “He said the headpiece was his favorite and, when he realized I didn’t like the snow, he tried to convince me it wasn’t all bad by telling me how they used to play in the snow when he was little.
“Logan doesn’t usually talk about him much,” the king said. “He was just a child when he died. It hit him very hard.”
 Virgil had noticed that himself.
“It’s good he’s talking about him at least a bit.” The king mused, taking a sip of his drink. “He was the son of a stable hand here.”
“You married a stable hand’s son?” Virgil asked and something about his tone made the king laugh.
“I did,” he confirmed. “We met when we were teenagers about your age. His father had come to work at the castle, and they lived in one of the houses out back. There weren’t many kids in the castle at the time and we both liked the gardens and the orchard, so we ended up friends.”
This knowledge just reaffirmed to Virgil that Logan’s dad was an odd king. From what little Virgil knew of princes, they were not supposed to befriend the children of stable hands they met in the gardens and kings were certainly not supposed to marry them. Then again, Logan was also a prince and he had befriended an assassin he found in his bedroom. In fact, now that he thought about it, Patton was now a royal advisor in training, but even he was just the son of a chef.
Perhaps the royalty of Prijaznia were just like that. He was once again glad he hadn’t managed to kill the king.
He’d been glad for a while now. At first it had been because he’d gotten to know Logan and knew killing his dad would have made him sad. Now, though, he thought it was a good thing he didn’t kill the king because the king didn’t deserve to die from what Virgil had seen. He was nice.
He even got up and got Virgil more of the apple cider when he finished his first cup of it. He continued to sit with him and talk to him about different things like what he, Logan, and Patton had been doing in the past few days.
Eventually, the king went to go check if the weather was any better, leaving Virgil to finish his third glass of cider.
“It’s snowing less hard now,” the king told him when he got back, “but it’s still snowing. It’s also going to start to get dark soon. Do you want to try to go back?”
Virgil didn’t really. He didn’t want to be outside when it was snowing at all, but he also really wanted to be back at the castle before it was night. He’d much prefer to sleep in a bed or even in his closet than somewhere in the stable.
“Yeah, we can try to go back,” Virgil replied.
“Alright,” the king said. He grabbed his coat off of the couch from where he’d set it. Virgil had also taken off his coat eventually, so he grabbed his as well. Once they were both dressed, they walked back to the stable door.
Virgil hesitated when he saw the snow. It was better than it had been earlier, but it still was falling fairly hard. He shifted nervously. That was going to be cold.
At least now he could see the castle clearly, so he didn’t have to worry about getting lost in the snow and dying… probably.
“Here,” said the king. He reached for Virgil slowly and Virgil tensed but allowed it. The king took off the hood Virgil had put up and readjusted the cloth hat under it so it was over his ears before putting the hood back up. He pulled on some strings that Virgil hadn’t realized until right then tightened the hood so it wouldn’t fall off his head in the wind. Then, the king took off the scarf around his own neck and wrapped it twice around Virgil, so it covered his mouth and nose. The only exposed area of his face was now his eyes.
“Now will get the least amount of snow on you as possible,” the king said.
“Thanks,” Virgil said. It came out a little muffled.
He smiled at him. “Do you,” he asked, sounding a bit awkward, “want to hold my hand?”
He didn’t particularly. He’d held hands with Logan and Patton before, but that was different. This was the king. Then again… he looked out at the snow. He really didn’t want to risk getting lost in the snow and he was less likely to get lost in the snow if he was holding on to someone, especially someone who knew his way around the castle grounds very well.
Biting his lip behind the borrowed scarf, he decided he’d already taken way too many liberties when it came to the king. He shook his head no. “No thank you.”
“Alright,” said the king. “Offer is open if you change your mind. Ready to go?”
Virgil nodded, grimacing as he stepped out into the cold, the king at his side. Even with the nice winter coat from Logan and the king’s scarf, it was still noticeably cold. Still, he was not cold enough to justify the icy chill that went down his spine and the way his lungs felt frozen solid causing him to pant trying to take in air. It shouldn’t be this way. He’d been in much colder weather for much longer and with a lot less.
“Are you alright?” the king asked when Virgil couldn’t help but slow down to a stop, shivering.
Virgil looked up at him. Unlike Virgil’s face, he had no scarf to protect him from the weather, but he didn’t seem concerned about that. He seemed much more concerned about Virgil. His reddening face was pinched, and he didn’t look like a man as powerful as a king. He looked like… well, he looked like a concerned father, like Logan’s father.
“Can…” Virgil choked out. He held out his hand.
“Of course,” he said. “Like I said, the offer is open.” He reached forward and wrapped his fingers around Virgil’s. Virgil immediately felt the warmth of them, though it may have been more in his head. There were two pairs of thick gloves between their skin.
Logan’s dad led him by the hand all the way back to the castle.

Thank you for the request! :D I’m very new to posting content lol so I’m sorry for the confusion and inconvenience, I’m still trying to figure out how tumbler works 😅 but I don’t write NSFW I’m sorry and don’t worried I love this request because I was thinking about Bakugou rampage mode when you sent this, great minds think a like! Hope you don’t mind me making Bakugou super soft in this one. Honestly soft Bakugou differently lol.
I also made a request rules here! Once again my bad I should have the request rules first, sorry for that. But without further ado here’s the one shot :3
Rampage mode - Bakugo Katsuki
Bakugou surprises you by celebrating your one year anniversary of being a “couple” only to find Jirou trying to whisk you away from him.
Warnings: Yandere behavior, age up characters (Bakugo is in his mid 20’s), Graphic descriptions, violence, Censored language, character death, reader gets injured not majorly though, Mentions of marriage, soft?? Bakugou
Bakugou was the happiest man alive because today was your first anniversary as a couple, and to top it off you have been starting to be more nice and loving towards him. He couldn’t ask for anything more than that. You just being with him was all he could ask for. Well maybe one more that will have to wait later that evening.
Waking up that morning with you wrapped in his arms was a dream come true. He woke up 30 minutes before he had to get out of bed just so he could admire you. He was restless, he had big plans for today. You're the only one who made him want to have a wife, a family. A future without you isn’t an option for him.
Before his thoughts ran too far wild his alarm went off and you just had to open your gorgeous orbes you called eyes looking at him like you just woke up from hibernation. Bakugou genly moved you off of him to go make you breakfast. He would like for you to cook with him but you're too sleepy to handle a knife properly and besides you could cook with him this evening for dinner anyways.
After breakfast is getting ready for the day. You do your morning routines together, him helping you out when he can and you doing the same for him. He wanted this day to be just the two of you but today was a very important meeting his HR manager scheduled for him and he couldn’t move it. That's alright though, it gives him the excuse to go and pick up the ring he ordered for you.
He was so lost in his own thoughts he almost forgot to give you a goodbye kiss and hug, but do you know what he did forget? The F@cking documents he needed for the meeting. Don’t get him wrong, he wasn’t mad about seeing you again, no he was mad that he was most likely going to be late for that meeting. Which means his HR manager is going to have a field day with him.
With a sigh Bakugou turned around and drove as fast as he legally could (he doesn’t want to risk getting into a car accident) back home. Nothing could ruin this day for him, not the student meeting, not the dum papers he forgot, not the front door being ajar, not- wait the front door!
Without another thought Bakugou rushes in, slamming the door open to find you and Jirou standing in the living room in nothing but civilian clothing. Quickly Jirou steps in front of you protectively, ready to fight Bakugou. On the other hand Bakugou just stood there thinking, trying to figure out what exactly was going on here. Were you trying to escape? No, your affection was more than enough proof that you loved him and wanted to stay. It was Jirou who was trying to kidnap you and obviously didn't plan on him showing up.
He knew that she would try something like this but on their anniversary? His blood began to boil, he slammed the front door and locked it in one fell Swoop. Jirou and you must have seen the murderous look in his eyes because Jirou push you back and sid something to you but Bakugou didn’t hear it. Not after his explosions started to rang throughout the apartment. The first explosion you both dodged it, the second one knocked her off balance but unfortunately she recovered. By three one Bakugou is so angry and frustrated that he did even realize that you had jumped in front of him until it was too late.
Severely burned you land hashly on the floor right next to jirou. One moment he was standing there shocked and then the next jirou’s brains painted the walls, her body laying next to yours. Bakugou didn't know why you had done that but that's not important right now. With coarse hands Bakugou picks you up gently, taking you somewhere no one can even find you.
After patching you up, Bakugou takes you to the cottage that he owns for when he wants to go on a long trip. The one far away from anyone. When he gets you there you are half awake groaning tiredly, in pain obviously. He carries you in whispering soft apologies in your ear. This time he will make sure you will be safe with him. Weather you want it or not.

I hope you like this lol if there is anything Spelling or grammar mistakes please let me know! Thank you for reading and for your request! :D

[6/8] No summary provided but it’s the twisted story between bad boy Yoongi with angsty backstory and this brat/rich kid. I really liked how it was written though.  I made a mistake of reading part 4:  Two Months Too Long, which should’ve been the 6th story to read if you follow the author’s sequence.

Effortlessly by @gyukult - JJK | friends to lovers, neighbors au,
[8/?] “Reciprocate feelings?” Jungkook crosses his arms before he continues, “They should know that you’re the only girl in my life.“ Jungkook has been your best friend and neighbor since you could remember, but what you can’t recall is when your feelings began develop for him.
HEI$T: A JJK Fic by lucidly [AO3] - JJK | heist au, action, bangtan are thieves, vigilante au | A, S

Hypothetically Rewriting Assault’s Story + Some General Assault Opinions
Tumblr media
There’s a game my husband and I like to play when we watch a movie, play a game, or read a book that has a story that we don’t really enjoy or we enjoy certain parts of but not others.  We look at things we’d keep and things we’d change and we build a story from there-- sort of like an AU but we don’t really go into the writing part, we just stick to theorizing and mapping a general story.
I decided to play that game with Star Fox.  Not because I think Star Fox has a bad story but because sometimes I think the stories could have been handled better.  Note: for the rewrite game, I only really look at story, even for video games, I don’t really look at gameplay mechanics, but I do understand those have a lot to do with story potential so I do take it in as a factor... I just don’t bother to “rewrite” the mechanics, if that makes any sense at all.  Some of my list today will include boss encounters but I wouldn’t necessarily say those are mechanic-related... more like “event-related”.
I’ve mused a bit in the past about rewriting Adventures and Command and I do have plans to do a mock up of an Adventures remake eventually.  However, today I was thinking about how I would go about handling an Assault re-write in particular.  Much like Command and Adventures, I don’t have any beef with the core story but I do think there’s a few things that could’ve been better about Assault’s storyline-- like they had good ideas rolling but they didn’t quite refine them.
Under the cut because SUPER long.
My basic feelings on Assault are pretty positive.  I think the game is generally just fun and I like that it feels like the natural progression from SF64.  I liked getting to see planets we haven’t seen since the N64 era in better graphics and I liked seeing Star Wolf return.  I also just thought the aparoids were neat enemies.
Generally speaking, though, when it comes to Assault, I think it suffers from the thing it tries to push the most-- the story.  I think a lot of people get caught up in thinking the story is better than it is because it’s the first game since SF64 that really follows the same Star Fox vibe without retelling the Lylat Wars.  Don’t get me wrong, the overall plot is great but the execution and pacing are... wonky.  Certain characterizations also take a hit in some regards but no one really talks about that when Command exists. That’s something we’ll talk about later on with this post.
That being said, Assault really does have a lot good going for it.  An absolute banger of a soundtrack, some great dialogue, a neat story synopsis, the introduction of cool characters like Panther and Beltino (who existed but was always off-screen), and just good levels.
Tumblr media
So, here’s what I would add, I suppose, if I were to somehow have the ability to rewrite Assault.  Originally I had this in paragraph form, but I’ve made it into more of a list under topic segments with main points bolded for your viewing pleasure.  Some of these points might be considered nitpicky and while I do understand that yes, this is a game about space animals, I do hold the developers in high enough regard to make a game with a continuity that makes sense.
The Story Changes
- Reduce Pigma’s storyline in Assault.  This is the biggest one for me because a bulk of the plotline feels like a giant chase to just get at Pigma and it feels like it derails from the actual plot with the aparoids.  We only go to Sargasso because of Pigma.  We only go to Fichina and then back to Meteo again, because of Pigma.  That’s 3 levels in a 10 level game devoted to just tracking down Pigma and chasing him.  While it makes the build up to fighting Pigma kind of nice, I personally feel like the plot could be reduced to 2 levels.  If Assault overall was a longer game, I could see them making it 3 levels.  Overall, though, in its current state, I feel like the side plot overstays its welcome and the aparoids promptly get shoved to the side in favor of “Oh no, we gotta get to Pigma!” And I get the main motive here is to show how the aparoids affect people and because of the build up, it does a good job at showing how utterly terrifying the aparoids are.  But it’s still too long given the length of Assault’s story. The only alternative to this is make Assault longer, which... honestly, it should be.
- Revise the scene with Tricky.  I’m obviously not well-versed in dinosaur biology but I’m pretty sure dinos didn’t grow that fast from what studying I HAVE done.  And why is he suddenly king now?  Did his parents die?  He seems not affected by this at all?  Like it’s a funny scene with him, Fox, and Krystal, but it’s odd if you really look at it.  Give us, as players, more context because I’m still not even sure what happened to make Tricky suddenly the leader and... big.  As a note, you’re gonna hear me gripe a lot about the Sauria level in this post.
- The Star Wolf + Peppy sacrifice is a low effort way to raise tension/stakes and then cop out.  Oldest trick in the book, imo, is to act like you’re going to kill off important characters only for them to be alive miraculously.  And let’s face it, as an audience we all know they aren’t going to kill those characters because it’s Nintendo and those characters are too beloved.  I would’ve forgiven them for only doing this with Peppy or Star Wolf, but when you tack them both together and throw in the fact they make it seem like you’re going to have to kill General Pepper too... yeah, it’s just a bit much of the same trope over and over again.  I wanted to put a note in here about how I’m fine with the Great Fox being “sacrificed” but overall, it needed to return to the series because of it’s icon status, but I think that’s more of a gripe at Command instead of Assault.
- Keep Pigma alive.  This will conflict with a point I have later on about the game consistently having characters cheat death for easy drama points but with Pigma, I would’ve kept him fully alive... but maybe with some physical damage from the aparoids.  I understand he’s semi-alive in Command and tbh I don’t know where I stand on that.  Why keep Pigma alive, you might ask?  I feel like his character has a lot more potential than being “just the greedy guy”.  Like he’s got good potential future villain material for future games and... if I’m honest?  I just don’t see Nintendo wanting to keep Pigma dead so why even bother killing him off?  They couldn’t even commit to him being dead in Command anyways so it seems very moot.
- Bring Bill and Katt back.  Assault is acts a bit like a big reunion of all of our SF64 favorites but our two favorite side characters are suspiciously missing.  Wouldn’t Bill be out on the front lines fighting against Andrew in the beginning?  Or maybe back in Katina?  And wouldn’t Katt inevitably show up in the midst of the invasion, maybe to pointedly check in on Falco?
- Bring Andrew back for the final fight. I think Andrew being defeated early into the game is fine overall but I think bringing him back in for a reunion final fight against the aparoids would serve to really solidify that it’s really everyone vs the invading aparoid force.  It would show that not only is Star Wolf willing to put aside their differences but so is basically everyone in the Lylat System in the name of survival.  Imagine the Venomians and Cornerians working together against an aparoid fleet, giving Star Fox and Star Wolf time to attack the queen?  I just think it’d be neat and it’d open up the potential for some fun banter mid-mission.  I do understand that quite a few people consider Andrew canonically dead after Assault but personally, I feel that his defeat left his fate questionable (I’m a staunch believer that unless there’s a body, they’re probably alive, especially for Nintendo games because, again, they never like to kill people off) so him returning in Command never really bothered me.
- In general, reconsider some of the character portrayals.  Unfortunately, when a series has a different studio for each game, character portrayals will inevitably have inconsistencies.  While I give Namco a lot of credit for putting in oodles and oodles of detail into the game (particularly the levels), I think they failed in their portrayal of Fox, at the least, and Wolf is a considerable offender as well.  While it’s obvious that Fox in Adventures was effectively modeled off of Sabre even in terms of personality, Rareware was at least able to justify Fox’s newfound jaded attitude with the passing of many years and a distinct lack of steady income, resulting in the team being in disarray.  Assault’s Fox is a stark contrast to his cynical interpretation with seemingly no explanation other than maybe “Oh, I have more money and a gf, maybe I should behave myself”.  As if the sudden change in personality wasn’t random, Fox also just seems very blah, like a blank slate stereotypical shooter game protagonist dude with little to no emotion.  Wolf is less obvious but gets slated into a mentor-like role midway through the game and ends up in a respectful rivalry with Fox... which there’s nothing inherently wrong with that except for it happening abruptly (and, I mean, Peppy is right there).  But I take less issue with this and more of an issue with the fact that there’s an entire level establishing that Wolf now runs a crime den with effectively what seems to be an army and no one bats an eye at this.  He doesn’t even call on them to help with the aparoids.  Did they all die when the aparoids attacked Meteo?  Are they safe somewhere else?  Where do they go?  How was Sargasso able to operate without the CDF being on their doorstep with warrants for arrests?
- Don’t kill all the dinosaurs.  A bit of a dramatic statement but the ending screen that showed all the damage to Sauria really bothered me.  While I understand that the dinosaurs had less of a chance against the aparoids than a more technology-focused society like Corneria, I was a bit disappointed that the decision was made to just state that a lot of tribes had been wiped out.  I know this could easily be retconned in a future game and I feel like it should be.  “But why, Amalia?  Why are you disappointed by that?”  1) It’s a little too grimdark for my tastes.  2) The fact it all happened off-screen felt very hand-wavy.  And 3) It brings into question the entire point of Adventures.  Why did we bother to save this planet if it was going to be reduced to rubble and ash 1 year later?  Where were the Krazoa in all of this?  Why did they not make an appearance at all to try to stop the invasion with their alleged powers?  It just raises too many weird questions and I feel like Namco didn’t think it through too much.  Which I mean, sure.  Family, kiddo game.  I’m not asking for bigbrain plot and lore but I’m squinting at this bit because it does feel very contrary to the lore from the previous game.
- Make the aparoids more relevant.  As nice as it is to have a random bad guy from another galaxy, I feel like there was more that could be done with the aparoids in terms of their origins.  Tiny things, mind you, not huge revelations.  Off the top of my head, they could have been tied into Krystal’s backstory to help alleviate some of the complaints that she was too random to be added to the series’ main cast.  Alternatively, they could have been a product of Andross or even a weapon prototype from Corneria that fled the lab (I actually thought the game was leaning in that direction for a bit then just Nothing Happened).  I get that the vagueness of their origins leaves room for people to speculate and speculation is nice but... when you leave too many things unknown, it starts to feel less like giving fans room to interpret and more like just doing random things for the sake of it.  I think a lore tidbit here or there would work wonders for the aparoids instead of leaving them as just borg/zerg clones.
Tumblr media
Level-Based Changes
- Add either Aparoid RedEye or Aparoid General Scales as a boss to Sauria.  Given that this level mysteriously lacks a boss, which is just weird compared to the other levels, I think that they had the opportunity to add something cool to go along with the cinematic feel they were going for with Assault.  Assault’s cutscenes do play in a movie-like fashion and it’s clear they’re trying to make the game as epic as possible.  It’s a shame they had so much fodder for a great boss here but they failed to go through with it.  Alternatively: Add a Krazoa-Aparoid fusion.  Why?  Because Star Fox is about cool epic sci-fi and that would be cool epic sci-fi incarnate.
- Add a boss to the Aparoid Homeworld Level, aka the penultimate level.  Another one I felt was personally weird that there was no “final defense system” to challenge the team.  Would be cool to do an aerial battle over the aparoid planet with some giant flying aparoid.
- Be kinder to Sauria.  The level had some good homages but overall was incredibly small and incredibly short.  It felt like a bone tossed to Adventures fans but was not entirely true to the setting built by Rareware.  I’m... not even sure where the Sauria level is supposed to take place?  I presume it’s Walled City but it doesn’t really have the same color scheme or aesthetic?  Also where is my revised Adventures music?  Why do all the other levels get it but Sauria doesn’t?
- Put some of those funky items from the multiplayer into the main campaign.  I don’t know why some of these things, items especially, were omitted unless it was purely due to time constraints.  I remember having missile launchers and jetpacks in the multiplayer and was a bit sad that they were not in the main campaign.  Retuning the levels and adding those in would be a nice breath of fresh air for the more tedious on-foot missions.
- More levels.  Self-explanatory.  Still sad we didn’t get the Zoness or Titania levels in the single-player mode.

I think all of the above changes would improve the game, though I recognize all of this is being said 16 years later after lots of time to contemplate Assault’s weaker points.  I’m not entirely certain how long Star Fox Assault took to develop but given that there’s obviously quite a bit scrapped from the game (an entire arcade mode was scrapped as well), I’m going to assume that the studio felt pressured to shove the game out the door and into the hands of customers.  It’s a shame, really, because I think a little bit longer in the oven would have done a lot of good.  Still, the product we got was good in its own right and a game that many people look back on fondly.  I haven’t gotten to replay it in years but I hope to quite soon.
You might wonder why I bothered typing this all out and I guess my point was this-- Assault was great but it wasn’t perfect, and while a lot of other games fall under a crushing amount of scrutiny, Assault seems to dodge it.  And don’t get me wrong-- I adore Assault.  But given that not many takes exist out there about rewriting it, I decided to give it a shot.  For variety’s sake.
I do want to a mock up of a revised Assault story, which I think I will get to work on after completing this while all my ideas are still fresh in mind.  So stay tuned for that sometime in the near future.  I will also be doing my Adventures mock up at some point but probably not for a little bit as I do wanna focus some of my free time on actual fic-writing.
Anyways, if you stuck around this long, thank you for reading!  Have any changes you’d like to see to Assault if you could time machine your way back to the early 2000s?  Feel free to post in the comments, I’d love to read your ideas!

Do you have ocs? If you do, can we hear more about them?
Ah, you’re super sweet to ask! This is about the ones I mentioned in the tags of this post, I presume? Because I have... all the ocs. Ocs for days. Ocs for every occasion, but I do in fact have Additional Feanorion Grandkids ocs, and if you want to know more, sure! I’d love to share!
I’ll admit though, that I came up with these kids like... 2? 3 years ago? As part of an idea I had where Feanor had eight grandchildren to correspond with the points of his star. Now 1) oh god I’ve been in the silm fandom longer than I realized, 2) only four of those grandkids are ocs, because the other four are Gil, Elrond, Elros, and Tyelpe, and 3) these kiddos are kinda outdated, and I would change... a lot of about them and their stories if I was to invest the time to do it today. Lot’s of early fandom weirdness. I’m still fond of them, though.
With that in mind... (holy shit this got long, I’m sorry, you did not ask for four fic outlines but alas)
Miniel Russanis, daughter of Amras.
Born in Beleriand in 128 FA. Red hair, grey eyes, takes after her father. She has an ‘impish’ look about her that contradicts her serious nature.
Her mom’s name is Nolyawen, she’s a common tanner from Formenos and is part of the Feanorian host. Childhood friends with Ambarussa. Helped Amras a lot after Amrod’s death.
Russanis is of the opinion that horses are better than people, loves the outdoors, and did not inherit the family gene for drama. She’s a very no-nonsense and reserved type of person, and can come off as cold even. She’s not cold, she’s a very soft soul for animals, children, and outcasts, she just has a keen sense of what it takes to survive in an inhospitable environment. And a keen sense of how we can hurt the ones we love through careless emotion.
She’s close to Celegorm when she’s young, but likes Maglor best when she’s older. She and Celebrimbor are very good friends, very close throughout their youths together.
Anyway, so here’s where the wonkiness comes in, I originally imagined Russanis marrying a messenger from Gondolin and going to live with him in like... 300~ FA, but there were no messengers from Gondolin around that time! It don’t make no sense! Bad Tribble!
So, an off the cuff fix, Russanis actually meets Maramo (the Gondolindrim husband) at the Nirnaeth, and after the battle she considers returning to Gondolin with him- because like... wholly shit things suck rn- and Amras and Nolyawen are like ‘thank god, get out of here, save yourself’.
So she does.
King Turgon ‘Don’t Punish the Child for the Sins of the Father’ Fingolfinion was very welcoming to her, even though he still held great anger against her family for the boat-burning. He treated her like a princess of the Noldor, but the uncomfortable knowledge that he hated her father and Russanis’s more simple sensibilities meant she kept a cool distance between them.
She’s good friends with Maeglin, tho! They bond over having not been raised either across the sea or in Gondolin. And smithing stuff, as Russanis knows a little from her uncle and cousin.
Russanis got along alright with Idril, but they were never particularly close, mostly because they had very little in common, but also because of her closeness with Maeglin, and Idril’s desire to stay away from him (valid). Idril went out of her way to show Russanis around the city and introduce her to everyone, with Russanis always appreciated.
Even though she went to live in the outskirts of the city with Maramo to raise horses first chance she got.
She was happy there, though her thoughts strayed back to her family sometimes. When news of the Second Kinslaying came, she gave a deep, hearty sigh, and began to mourn. Her father was dead, then, if not in body, then in spirit. Lost to her, at least. She hoped her mother was okay.
Russanis- like others- noticed something was very off about Maeglin when he came back from his imprisonment, but he started to pull away from her around then. Russanis didn’t push, she had learned from dealing with her dad that it was best not to push, but she kept a wary eye on him and invited him to dinner a lot.
She had other things on her mind, she was pregnant.
She escaped the Fall of Gondolin- cursing Maeglin all the way, using the same ‘dead to me then’ mentality she had for her father to cope- but Maramo didn’t.
Her son was born in the havens, his name is Vorion!
It’s a damn good thing people have mostly forgotten that her patronymic is ‘Amrasiel’, she never uses it, because otherwise there would probably be a fair amount of hostility sent her way there. Russanis keeps her head down, though, so it’s not a problem for the most part.
She and Idril bond! Neither of them have any family left, and the lives they built for themselves are gone, so why not! She’s heartbroken when Idril and Tuor leave, and low-key adopts Earendil.
She keeps away from Elwing, though, no need to aggravate that wound.
The Third Kinslaying happens.
She catches one glimpse of... her father? Her uncle? She doesn’t know, it was just red hair, and had they forgotten about her? Why would they destroy her home?
Not even Maeglin had made her feel this betrayed.
She hold Vorion close to her, and cries and cries as her home burns around her for the third time, and Russanis is so tired.
When asked later if the Feanorions are going to treat Elrond and Elros well, she can’t even give an answer. Those are not her uncles. She doesn’t know what they’re capable of. They destroyed her home and didn’t even take the time to make sure she wasn’t there.
Her father’s blood is on the beach.
Russanis knew how to fight once. She hadn’t liked it, had run away from it to Gondolin the first chance she got. She doesn’t fight during the War of the Wrath. She spends a lot of time with the war horses, though.
The Feanorian civilians arrive with Elrond and Elros. Nolyawen is among them. When she and Russanis see each other, they hug and cry in public, relieved to be reunited at the end of things.
Eonwe comes to her afterward to personally tell her she’s been pardoned and given leave to go to Valinor. If she was any less composed, she would have spat at him.
As it is, Russanis kindly bows her head, thanks him, grabs her son and her mother, and goes home.
And then she meets Nerdanel and they love each other, and she starts a horse ranch and Maramo is reborn and they have two more kids, twin girls, and they’re all happy
Hal (name under construction, I hate the one I originally gave him), son of Caranthir.
Haleth’s son, obviously. Born 380 FA. He takes after her, has a ‘tawny’, almost ‘common’ look about him. Resting bitch face that could kill a man.
Raised by his mother and her people, doesn’t even know what a half-elf is for the first ten years of his life. He’s slowly becomes away of the facts that 1) his ears are pointy, 2) he ages... slower than the other children, 3) his senses are keener than theirs, he’s stronger despite being smaller, and wtf he glows faintly.
His heritage, his father was never a secret, but no one really spoke about it either. When he asked Haleth flat-out, though, she told him in full. She doesn’t tell it like a romance or an adventure, but he appreciates that.
Hal is a very straight-forward person, has no time for obfuscating, and especially not Elven word games. Has no time for most Elven nonsense, like blood feuds and oaths and magic. Takes great joy in mocking absurdity, would be a great Enlightenment poet. He is also a insufferable know-it-all and this only gets worse as he gets older and starts to actually know things.
He’s very close with his second-cousin Halmar, who is ten years his younger, but they age wonkily so that they end up teenagers around the same time.
When he comes ‘of age’ (17-ish? He’s physically younger) Haleth tells him he can go see Caranthir, if he wants. So Hal goes on a road trip.
Hal shows up at Moryo’s door like ‘yo, pay your child support’.
I can’t decide if Caranthir knew about Hal or not, one version is more reasonable and has better angst potential, but the original (who in this child and why is he eating my food?) is funnier.
Anyway, that aside, father/son bonding time!
Caranthir and Hal get along really well but you would never be able o tell that on the surface because they are always fucking fighting. Constant bickering, Hal takes great delight in needling his old man on literally everything, and Caranthir is like *surprised pikachu face* every time, it never gets old.
They have a lot of common interests (they’re nerds) though, and Hal wants to know how Thargelion is run, and Caranthir is happy to share.
They never like... officially announce ‘this is my son’ but people figure it out, despite the lack of resemblance. Celegorm shows up for a visit out of the blue one days and just *vibrating at a frequency reserved for atoms* “Nephew, nephew, nephew, another nephew!”
Hal meets Russanis once! They liked each other, but didn’t know one another well enough be truly close. It’s similar with Celebrimbor at this time.
Hal goes back and forth between Thargelion and Brethil for several centuries more, stays in Brethil for a decade straight during the last years of his mother’s life, then leaves for two decades when she dies.
When Dagor Bragollach comes down on them, he’s in Brethil, helping Halmar adjust to his reign.
Hal has adjusted to a... weird role among the Haladin. He’s... not quite stopped aging but it’s slow to a crawl. He doesn’t know when/is he’s going to die of ‘natural causes’. Is he an elf? A man? No one knows! Hal is like 25 physically/metally but he’s become the wise old mentor, their guardian among the Haladin.
He fought alongside Beleg during the Bragollach, protecting his home and people from the hordes of Morgoth.
“Haleth’s last gift to protect us,” his people say about him, and Hal’s not entirely sure how he feels but he wants to do them proud. He loves them. Even as they die around him.
He visits his father in Amon Ereb only once.
Next time Hal sees Caranthir is at the Nirnaeth Arnodiad. They talk in a meeting tent briefly, wish each other luck and say their goodbyes. They are both emotionally stunted, and don’t say ‘I love you’ but it is implied.
This is the last time they ever see each other.
Not because either of them die, but because the Nirnaeth Arnodiad goes as badly for the Haladin as it does for anyone else, and they need Hal right now.
Handir needs Hal, Hareth and her grandchildren need Hal, his people need Hal. Caranthir will be fine.
Caranthir is evidently not fine, and dies at the Second Kinslaying.
Hal doesn’t quite know what to do with this information, knowing that his father died destroying the Haladin’s greatest ally, but he doesn’t have time to think about it.
He’s too busy beating himself up for the nightmare that was the Turin and Nienor situation. How could he have failed them so badly? How could he... how could he not have known them? His cousins, his niece and nephew, what is the point of this immortality if he can’t even...
Doesn’t matter! The girdle is gone, Doriath has fallen, and Brethil will be next if he allows himself to falter now.
Keep fighting, keep leading, keep guiding, go west, go west. Hal shoves his father out of his mind and tries to focus on his mother’s legacy.
Elves don’t really die after all.
The War of the Wrath is almost a relief. Finally these gods they've been hearing about come! Yeah the Noldor are doomed but what did the Secondborn do to deserve this!
Numenor is their compensation. Allegedly. Hal distrusts it, but nothing will dissuade his people from going, and he will not fight it. It is the Elf in him that distrusts, after all, and he is... he is not and Elf. Right?
Like Elrond and Elros, Hal is offered a choice.
He wants to scream, wants to yell, wants to beg, “Why didn’t you come sooner?!” Why didn’t they ask him when his mother yet lived! When Halmar yet lived?! When all the people he chose not to fall in love with yet lived?! WHY NOW?
Why now, when Hal has no one and nothing worth dying alongside...
He chooses Elvendom, and stays with the Haladin on Numenor.
He is their guardian, and he’s made peace with that role. It’s who he is, why he is here. He will guide and guard them until the end of time.
But despite what he tells himself, he loves Elros- his cousin through two lines, Maglor’s beloved child, and also beloved Tuor’s grandson, he is one of Hal’s many nephews- too much, they are best friends, and losing Elros hurts worse that than any death had since Halmar.
Hal keeps on though.
He finally gets close with Celebrimbor! That’s nice. He love young Elrond in Elros’s stead.
But when war came to Eregion, he couldn’t save his cousin. As always, Hal chose his Mannish kin first, but it hurt his heart.
He watched the Shadow fall over Numenor in real time, had his heart ripped from his chest when one of his beloved nephews (so far down the line that they didn’t quite know how they were related, but that didn’t matter, it had never mattered), a King’s Man, spat at him for his elven blood and elven languages and elven beliefs.
Hal wasn’t even a good elf! He had no love of the Valar, no love for Valinor, no love of immortality! And yet he was the enemy.
He kept on with the Faithful, but Ar-Adunakhor... banished him.
Him? The son of Haleth, the immortal guardian of the Haladin, banished from the isle of Numenor, the isle of his people?
Hal went to Lindon, and existed in stupor for several years. He tried to travel back and forth to Numenor in secret, but those trips were few in far between. He helped the Faithful where he could.
Tar-Palantir invited him back, though!
Hal considered saying no, briefly, a dark and nasty thought, then tossed it away and returned to Numenor. He held Palantir’s face, cradled Miriel in his arms, and cried with relief. He was home.
There was still strife, though. There was still the King’s Men and there was... Pharazon.
The King’s Men marched on the palace after Palantir’s death, and not only could Hal not defeat them all, he refused to kill his children. No matter how fall they had fallen. He did take Miriel’s hand and begged her to run with him, begged her to let him take her to Lindon.
She refused. She would not run from her home, from her people, from her birthright. And her words bolstered Hal, and he stayed too.
Stayed as almost a pet to Pharazon, who found having a peredhel advisor amusing. Stayed long enough to see /Sauron/ brought to them in chains. Stayed to beg Pharazon to reconsider this, to not trust his submission, to not be a FOOL. Stayed for Zigur to find out that dear Hal was the son of Caranthir Feanorion, and to be delighted by this news.
Stayed to be sacrificed upon an alter to Morgoth.
Hal woke up in the Halls of Mandos.
If he could have chosen to go back and make a different choice, to go back and die a Man’s death whenever his odd biology chose to kill him, he would. He should have lived at the dawn of Numenor beside Elros, whorls have chosen a spouse, had children, and died a man’s death.
But he thought he was so smart, so wise, so clever. Such a guardian.
And in the end, he saved nothing.
Now all that’s left for Hal is to toil with his Elf’s soul until he is reborn and trapped in Valinor, far away from his people who he failed.
THIS ONES AND THE NEXT ARE SAD I”M SORRY IT”S THE SILM WHAT DO YOU EXPECT
Lossië Merilissel, daughter of Celegorm
She and her brother down below are twins, and also I love them so much omigosh, BUT! My conception of Celegorm has changed and I’ve been trying to rehabilitate them into being the kids of a random Feanorian warrior rather than Celegorm’s kids. But that’s not prescient rn.
As it currently stands, Lossie and Lossero are born in 475 FA at Amon Ereb. (ARG I hate this age, they’re so young, but it couldn’t be any earlier, bleh)
They both have their father’s hair, but have their mother’s green eyes. They are shorter, like the Laiquendi, but take after Celegorm in facial features.
Their mother is Sidhel Denethoriel, one of the Laegrim. She and Celegorm are each other’s rebound and the whole thing was super ill advised! They were good friends, but terrible spouses. This affects the twins!
They have a pretty damn miserable childhood, first with their ‘out for blood’ Father at Amon Ereb. Then, in the lead up to the Second Kinslaying, Sidhel takes the kids and leaves, going to live with her people.
This is all fine and dandy until the Second Kinslaying happens, and oh no, your dad totally killed King Dior and destroyed Doriath, they were our friends, wtf?
So while they have some friends and family among the Laiquendi, they’re largely outcasts, especially to those who escaped the fall of Doriath and came back to Ossriand.
But they grow up in relative peace and harmony with their mother.
Merilissel is friendly, if quiet and that’s more nurture than nature. She’s very inquisitive, and would happily live in the trees among her mother’s people her whole life. She can come off as... simple, bordering ‘dumb’ to people because she holds her tongue and defers, but she did receive a Noldorin princess’s education in her youth, and is very talented with languages- she does speak the languages of the birds and beasts, a skill her brother never picked up. She’s got a sharp tongue and keen wit once she’s comfortable around people.
On the surface, everyone think’s she’s more like her mother, but she’s really just got Sidhel programming running on Celegorm hardware (she’s more like dad internally, but problem solves and treats people like mom). Conversely, Dulindir is Celegorm programming running on Sidhel Hardware.
Anyway, once the twins are older, they move to a more secluded area, away from people, further south, near Taur-Im-Duinath. They stay there happily alone (or so they tell themselves) all the way in the War of the Wrath.
That’s when they start to notice... bad things.
(And this is where is becomes frightfully obvious of out of date this is, and this is not a easy fix, so here goes)
The the idea is that Merilissel and Dulindir notice more dark comings and going in the south, eventually stumbling upon a small fortress of the enemy’s hidden away behind enchantments, and steadily pumping out weapons and orcs, amassing a massive force.
The twins are reasonably certain no one knows this force is coming for the Host of Valinor’s southern flank, and so they split up to warn everyone.
Dulindir goes east to rally the Laegrim, and Merilissel goes west.
She finds herself in the war camp that Sirion has become, looking for someone to speak to and warn. She finds Celebrimbor, who’s not sure what to make of his uncle’s daughter at first, but cannot deny her request. He gets her a hearing in front of the war council.
Gil-Galad, Cirdan, Celeborn, Galadriel, Oropher, Amdir, Egalmoth, Arafinwe, Ingwe, Olwe, they’re all there.
Merilissel says her piece, and the response is... not what she wants.
“You want us to turn the entire war around to go to the south, to fight a host that we have no reports of? Why should we believe you?”
No one has any reason to believe Merilissel Celegormiel. No one wants to.
Gil-Galad takes pity on her, though, and says that they need proof of this threat. If she could just bring something to them to prove how dangerous what she says is, that it’s there...
Merilissel accepts this quest.
In order to help verify, it’s suggested they send someone with her. It is eventually decided that Amdir’s younger son, Aran, will go with her to help verify her claims.
Aran is chosen for a very specific reason. He’s a young, brave warrior, well-regarded and trusted, but he’s chosen because he’s also a kinslayer. He killed Amras at Sirion- not even at his second majority at the time- and it has stained him permanently. Many of the host refuse to go near him, they regard him- and the other kinslayers among the sindar and teleri- as necessary evils, but tainted elves. Amdir and Celeborn, when they suggest this, just want to get Aran away from that scrutiny for a while.
Merilissel think Aran is meant to kill her.
Aran thinks this is a punishment, that he is meant to be with be with the other ‘tainted’ ones, the Celegormiel, that he is as wretched as her.
They take this out on each other.
But don’t worry, they bond on their road trip.
One long, life-changing field trip later, Aran and Merilissel are now good friends, and they make their way to the fortress in Taur-Im-Duinath, and... there’s nothing there?
Except there is, you just can’t see it around the almost Girdle-like barrier, and Meril and Aran have to some sneaking to get in, they realize that there’s only one small that opens to let orcs in and out. There’s no way they can siege this place like this. So how do we break the barrier?
Aran sends a message back home, saying “GUYS there’s a big fortress here that’s about the level our base camp, PLEASE come quick.”
Then Merillissel and Aran make a choice that only young people with something to prove can.
The host from this fortress is going to march out in a week, and it’s going to take approximately that time for the Host of the Valar to get here.
In between that time, they have to break the barrier, or this place if just going to keep producing weapons and warriors, and any open field battle is doomed.
So its time for a heist!
So Merilissel and Aran break in, sneak around, and find a crystal (mcguffin) that Sauron has used as the beacon the create the barrier. They cannot break it, so they’re just going to have to take it away.
Once they wrest is out from it’s pedestal, the enchantment falls.
In the process of getting in, though, they have alerted the entire fortress to their presence. They are being chased. Aran’s already pretty damn injured.
They run to the roof.
While Aran fights off the horde at the stairs, Merilissel manages to call for a bird friend, and she quickly uses the ribbons in her hair to tie the crystal to this suitably large bird, and bids it to fly away, fly fast, far away, fly to her brother. Don’t look back.
And now they’re trapped on the roof.
Now, Merilissel is an archer, and a good one at that. They only thing she has from her father was a bow fashioned in the style of Orome’s huntsmen, carved with divine blessings, strung with his hair.
She ties some rope to an arrow, threads it through the bow, then fires for a towers further down. The arrows strikes through, and she and Aran glide down.
They do this until they hit the ground, and now all there is is to run until they’re out, Merilissel sees the end.
(privately, Aran already thinks they’re doomed. He knows how these fortresses work better than her. The gate is already shut. He can feel something shuddering in the distance. He does not tell Merilissel that, because he promised to show her the ocean.)
And then the commander of this fortress shows up.
Merilissel and Aran don’t even notice anyone arrived in front of them before they’re on the ground.
Sauron has come.
He stabs Aran first, not anywhere to kill immediately, but enough that he’s screaming. Merilissel tries to go for him, but Sauron turns his cat-eyes on her and kicks her like the nuisance she is to him. Again, and again. Then Aran. And then he’s back to her, blade through her shoulder, pinning her down.
“And what’s this? A little girl, but bearing an eight-pointed star. Another pest from that cursed line. I won’t make the same mistake we made with your uncle, of the thrice-damned Felagund. No more games.”
Her hand is reaching out for Aran. She’s begging for Dulindir. She never wanted to be her father’s daughter.
Sauron’s boot comes down on her neck, and that’s it.
And then she’s reborn in Valinor millennia later, gets adopted by Aunt Aredhel, meets Nerdanel and Russanis, goes on to live with her mother’s family happily, and she and Celebrimbor and later Hal get to bond, eventually she marries Aran. And it’s all okay, don’t worry
Lossero Dulindir, son of Celegorm
Dulindir’s story starts where Merilissel’s ends, unfortunately.
He looks startling like a shorter Celegorm, except for... we’ll get there
Dulindir has a nasty temper (Celegorm) and a tendency to hold grudges (Sidhel), and he is not quiet, he shows out for attention. He’s a marvelous swordsman, virtually a monkey with his climbing, and loves to sing. He adores his sister more than anyone else on earth, and though he would have preferred to tough it out with the Laiquendi, to make them acknowledge them, he left because Merilissel didn’t want to fight their outcast status.
In short, he is ready and willing To Fight. (But secretly soft, and if you show him an ounce of affection, he responds with eternal love and loyalty)
After Dulindir and Merilissel separate, he goes to the Laegrim and manages to rally his kin, somewhat. They don’t want to fight the fortress alone, but they do believe him, so it’s agreed that they will go with Dulindir to meet up with the Valar’s host.
They do this, and having received Aran’s message, the Valar’s host meet them halfway, ready to fight.
They’re on the way to save the day when Dulindir feels like something just grabbed his heart and squeezed.
He passes out, but he knows already before the black takes him, that Merilissel is dead.
(Insert heart-wrenching mourning here)
They move forward, and Dulindir’s is at the head of the force racing for the fortress
He’s greeted with the sight of Merilissel’s corpse hung on the gates by her bow.
The battle crashes together.
They were not expected Sauron, but their ready. Dulindir- blinded by rage- crashes against him.
He is not Fingolfin, he is not Feanor, he’s a moriquendi kid falling to pieces as he swings his sword, but Sauron takes one step back, takes one cut to the thigh, before Dulindir’s done.
Sauron’s blade rends down his face.
He doesn’t know what happens next, can barely see through the blood, someone else, several someones, at least one ainur, has challenged Sauron. Dulindir gets up and picks something easier to kill.
The battle ends, Sauron flees, they win, Dulindir is about to collapse, but first he cuts down Merilissel’s body.
Later, much later, he and Sidhel bury her, and scatter flower seeds over her grave.
Sidhel goes back to the Laegrim, the one’s in Ossiriand, hiding among the trees. She asks him to come with him. He declines. He’s going to stay and fight.
Dulindir hears about a memorial for Aran Amdirion. His body was found afterwards in the dungeons. He’d been dead, but his body wasn’t cold.
He goes to the memorial.
The Sindar, who normally would have been hostile to him, let him skirt along the fringes. His half his face is bandaged, a horrific scar marring it (and elves do not scar, except for when wounded by morgul weapons) and Dulindir looks like a boy. A child. A lonely one at that.
Oropher watches the boy out of the corner of his eyes for any funny business though.
Oropher keeps watching Dulindir, sitting with but apart from the Laiquendi who stayed to fight. The boy looks half dead. Who is watching him in battle? Oropher always keeps Thranduil at the back, guarded and away from the worst of it, but who is minding Dulindir?
No one is. Oropher hates that he has morals. But he is not a Feanorion, and they might leave Sindarin children to die, but a Sinda will not leave a Feanorian child to die.
He picks Dulindir up by the scruff, makes him eat, makes him clean. Starts nagging the boy around the camp. Adopts him, virtually, though neither he nor Dulindir will admit it.
And then after a battle one day he finds Dulindir and Thranduil curled up like puppies in their tent, and that’s the end of that.
Dulindir hangs out with Oropher for the whole war, and then hangs out with him afterward. Where else is there to go? He and his mother can’t even look at each other anymore, Merilissel between them. There is Valinor, but... Merilissel will not be there for a very long time, and Dulindir loathes the idea of leaving Beleriand behind.
Especially because Sauron escapes, and Dulindir still has a debt to collect.
They go to the Greenwood!
And there’s a whole bunch to say, but that’s another story, and all that’s important is that Dulindir serves Oropher first, then Thranduil. He marries a Silvan woman names Eilianwen, they have a daughter named Fennien, she’s good friends with Legolas, and after the final war he goes to Valinor and gets to hug Merilissel again.
And they all lived happily ever after and get to see their dads again and heal

Top 5 Mass Effect companions? Your meta posts have me pretty tempted to pick up the remastered trilogy and try it out 😊
Ooooh i'm glad to hear it! Mass Effect has such a special place in my heart and I'm always happy to encourage other to play it. I actually haven't tried the remastered edition yet, but I've heard only good things about it.
Onto the list:
5. Samara. Number 5 is hard to choose because I seriously like everyone in ME, and Samara is far from being one of the squadmates with most content, but still, she is such a striking presence and I treasure every scene with her through the trilogy. I love her status as this super powerful extreme moralist and how it contrasts with her relationship with her daughters (she is kind of a terrible parent, which I love). I love her voice acting and her dramatic but also serious and intimidating dialogue. Her loyalty quest has some bits of wonky writing, but it's different from other quests and carries such a mysterious and epic vibe that I can't help but adore. I love her.
4. Garrus. It's an unpopular opinion to have him so low, but I guess because people worship him so much I never had to justify liking him, so he's not a character I'm particularly protective of, which justifies this ranking. Anyway. Garrus is popular for a reason: He's just a great guy with one of the best character arcs of the entire trilogy, and the fact that Shepard can actually shape his moral compass and the person he becomes is really an awesome bit of writing and helps to reinforce how important their friendship it. I always have a weakness for characters trying to do the right thing and be just in a fundamentally unjust setting, even if they mess it up terribly, so there was no question I'd love him from his introduction. No Shepard without Vakarian, indeed.
3. Mordin. It's funny that Mordin is technically only a squadmate for one game, because he's one of the most memorable characters of the franchise and, in my opinion, the one with the best character arc. When he was first introduced I was wary of him because the Genophage is one of the bits of ME lore that always struck me the hardest, I wanted to cure it since finding out what it was, so having the guy who was responsible for it on my crew wasn't something I was looking forward to. But from his introduction Mordin is such an interesting character with so many layers, and the way the writing deals with his own sense of guilt and how he represses it, and how in ME3 he finally gets to admit to himself and to the world he made a mistake and work towards fixing it, is just so, so well done. His final scene in ME3 marks the ending of my favorite mission of the entire trilogy, and in both the full Paragon and the full Renegade playthroughs he gets one hell of a fantastic send off. Just... really, really good.
2. Kaidan. Kaidan is kind of the opposite of Garrus to me, in that I feel like I've become a lot more attached to him because I find myself having to defend him so often. People tend to dismiss him as "boring" which I find so unfair and part of general fandom trend I hate - to view any character who isn't quippy and funny as someone with no personality. With Kaidan I find it specially absurd because you literally only have to talk to him a few times and you get a sense of who he is, and who he is is a very great guy. He has his issues, he bottles stuff up a lot, but in general he's introduced as pretty much the only member of your crew with a good moral compass (his story about Vyrnnus is a perfect example of a person who is actually managing to deal with meeting new species without falling into a racist, defensive posture). He's not a doormat either - people get mad at him for lashing out at Shepard during Horizon but he was right! Cerberus sucks and it's sketchy as hell for Shepard to suddenly be working with them! And I think the fact he openly disagrees with that makes his relationship with Shepard more interesting, because he's not afraid of challenging them. It's great tension and the way it builds up and blows up in Mass Effect 3 is something I love (and which works fantastically for his romance with M!Shepard).
1. Liara. I mean... What can I say? One of the defining moments of my very first Mass Effect playthrough was the "wait, can I be gay in this? oh hell YES i can be gay in this" moment, and I fell in love with Liara from her very first scene. My OG Shepard never had eyes for anyone else, and why would she? Liara is such a loveable character from the start, with her awkward flirting and her dorky excitement over the historic implications of what you're discovering (that no one else seems to give a shit about lol). Her romance comes across as believable, being so sweet at first and then taking a tragic turn in the second game, which is dealt with amazingly in the Shadowbroker DLC. And what I love most about it is that Liara as a character grows so much while you're apart, and yet we also get to witness some of it in the DLC. Then in ME3 she's already a far cry from the inexperiened scientist you met in the first game, but she's still very much her, still attached to an overly romantic view of the protheans, still caring and compassionate and brave. People complain about her reaction to Thessia which annoys me so much, because it's such a realistic reaction, it's a moment of vulnerability that makes perfect sense and it helps to keep the stakes of the war feeling high. And I love that even near the end she's thinking ahead, trying to help future generations who might face the reapers if you fail, but also preserving Shepard's memory because she loves her so much. I adore Liara.

Are you able to write a little something about dad Auston again?? It can be short. A day with him and just baby Mia and she’s like 3 weeks old, I know a throwback! He’s just all by himself at home with her cause y/n has so many errands Auston is off that day. He’s just their at home with her and it’s like fluff🥺 maybe he’s a bit nervous at first. When she sleeps that day she always on his chest. Their evening walk she’s strap on him. He really hiding his and Mia disguise well. Please if u can❤️
A/N: wow I really am incapable of writing something small, huh? Anyways, here you are my dear!
Word Count: 4.3k
"Ok, um, there's bottles ready in the fridge for when she gets hungry, you just have to warm them up. Oh, and her blanket is over on the couch, I think. Or is it in the nursery?"
Auston stood leaning against the doorway between the kitchen and living room, holding Mia as she slept, with an amused smirk on his lips as he watched you anxiously pace around the condo. It was your first time leaving Mia since she had been born. She was a little over three weeks old, and there was still a lot of adjusting that you and Auston were getting used to as new parents.
With Auston's career, he was required to not be at home quite often because of away games. There were a few consecutive days that the two of you were able to stay at home together, just after Mia was born, but soon enough, he did have to leave. It wasn't easy, but it was something you both had to accept.
You were nervous about your first time home alone with Mia, but with the help of Auston's family and Steph, you quickly adapted to it. But now it was Auston's turn, and it was all his fault too.
He insisted that you needed a day to yourself. Although he knew you had no issue being with Mia as much as you were, he wanted you to have some time to just do whatever and not have to worry about anything else. So, as a giveback for all that you've done when it came to your daughter when he couldn't be there, he decided to book you a nail appointment that was entirely on him. It was something so simple yet meaningful because he knew how much you loved getting your nails done, but you just hadn't had the time to since Mia was born. It worked too because he made the appointment for a day that he would be in Toronto on a home game stretch, so there was no reason for you to oppose the idea.
But then it turned into so much more.
Steph heard about Auston's plan for your day out and wanted in on it. So, she made plans for the two of you to go shopping and made reservations for a late lunch together. Again, you weren't opposed to a day out with one of your best friends either, immediately thinking of how much Steph seemingly loved spending time with you and your daughter over the past few weeks, but then you remembered one thing; Mia wouldn't be there. And that made you a little uneasy.
Although you knew your fiancé was fully capable of taking care of your daughter, he had yet to do it on his own. He was looking forward to seeing what it'd be like. You, however, were an anxious mess.
You did really well in hiding how stressed the whole ordeal was making you, but Auston knew. He was going to mention it, but he figured you knew that leaving Mia at home with him was bound to happen at some point, and yet, you still worried.
"Am I forgetting something? Why do I feel like I'm forgetting something?" You asked as you came to a sudden halt and ran a hand through your hair.
"Babe," Auston spoke up, hoping to get your attention and tell you there's no reason to stress, but should've known better.
"I don't think I am," you continued and moved to walk through the condo once again.
"Baby."
"You know, I could just cancel the appointment and go out with Steph another day, yeah that's fine."
"Y/N!" He finally said, loud enough to make you jump at his sudden outburst and look to him with wide eyes. Mia shifted in his arms, letting out a small noise as she briefly opened her eyes before closing them again and falling back asleep. The two of you watched her like hawks, hoping she wouldn't start fussing, and once you both realized she wasn't going to, you looked at each other again. "You need to stop stressing yourself out. You're only going out for a few hours. I can handle this."
"But Auston," you sighed. "What if she needs me, or something happens or-."
"Do you not trust me with our daughter?" He challenged, not seriously, but knowing that'd bring you back to your senses a little bit.
"Of course I do, you know that. I'm just… worried. Extremely worried."
"You have no reason to be," he replied softly and glanced down at Mia as she snuggled closer to him, a small smile dancing on his lips as she did so. "I must say, we have a pretty chill kid, you know? Doesn't stress much, just likes to eat and sleep."
"Clearly, she gets that from you."
"Funny."
You then sent him a knowing look and chuckling, before looking towards Mia and taking in how content she seemed in her dad's arms. "Do you promise to call me if anything happens?"
"Yes, you know I will," he reasoned with you. "Can even send you the updates if you really want."
"Please! Or else I may lose my mind," you told him as he stepped closer and wrapped an arm around your waist.
"You got it," he said before leaning down to peck your lips while being mindful of the sleeping infant in his other arm. "Now, you need to go. Your appointment is in 20 minutes."
"Ok, fine," you huffed and moved from his hold to go put on your coat and boots. Once you were done, you looked back to your fiancé and daughter and couldn't help but pout a little bit, but then Auston raised his eyebrows at you as if to ask what you were still doing there. "Don't look at me like that."
"Like what?"
"Like I'm overreacting."
"You? Overreact? Never," he teased, while you rolled your eyes.
"Whatever, ok, I'm going," you responded and walked to the door. "I don't think I missed anything. Say bye to Frank for me. I also can't remember where I put Mia's blanket for the life of me."
"It's in our room," Auston told you with a laugh. "I washed it last night, now stop worrying and go have fun."
"Ok, I love you."
"Love you too."
~*~
"Would you stop looking at your phone," Steph tsked and glared at you. She was sitting across from you as you both waited for your food to arrive after a long day of shopping and some much-needed girl time. It was because of her you hadn't called Auston every half an hour to check-in, even though you felt very inclined to do so. "I'm sure Mia is fine, Y/N."
"Oh, I'm sure she is too, but it's her father that is stressing me out," you replied and turned your phone around and started tapping so that she could see what was on the screen as well. Wondering what could possibly be going on, Steph gave you a look before glancing at the device and watching, soon having to stifle her laughter before it got too loud.
You had Instagram open, and one of the first things you noticed was that Auston posted on his story. Naturally, you were curious and wasted no time tapping on his little profile picture to see what it was.
The first picture was of Mia asleep on your fiancè's chest as he very clearly was lying on the couch. Frank was in it too, curled up by Auston's feet and the words' dad duty' were typed out in small blue font near the top left corner, making you melt a little bit at just how sweet it was. With the way Mia's face couldn't really be seen, you could tell she was snuggling up against her dad like she always did, and Auston being, well, Auston, had gone out of his way to not show her too much either. He was very private and protective in general, but once your daughter was born, it got escalated. He was even more careful about the things he posted, especially when they came to her.
In fact, it wasn't until the next parts of his story that you realized this was the first Mia related thing he's shared on social media other than a picture he posted of him holding her in the hospital just hours after she was born.
The next slide was a video of Mia stirring awake and stretching all while Auston's left hand was placed on her back protectively before cutting just as she was about to look towards the camera. It was ridiculously cute, but then you noticed how the following video had the green bar at the top of the screen, indicating it was shared for his 'close friends.' It was not as wholesome as what was posted before.
Instead of another cute snap of Auston and Mia having some sweet dad and daughter time, the video was of Auston standing in front of the full-length mirror that was hung on the wall near the condo's front door while holding your daughter. Mia was still leaning against his chest, but this time wide awake with her mouth open, curious about what was going on as she looked up at her dad while he chuckled and zoomed in on the reflection until a filter made both of their faces look all wonky.
That went on for three more slides, and you couldn't help but feel bad for Mia as she had to put up with Auston's antics.
"Please, at least he looks like he's having fun," Steph insisted as the story disappeared, and you brought your phone close again. "Mia seems pretty content too."
"He's turning my daughter into a meme, Steph."
"Like you're any better! Weren't you the one that was curious about how well trying to get Mia to ride on Frank's back when she's older would go over?"
"It was a joke!" You exclaimed and looked at her with wide eyes. "Now, please don't repeat that. Auston doesn't need any more ideas."
Steph just laughed again.
"You can't tell me you haven't thought about putting a Snapchat or Instagram filter on her."
"Whatever," you grumbled before looking away and smiling at the waitress as she set your food down. "Leave it to you to call me out on stuff like that even when I'm not the one doing it."
"Oh, you know I'm teasing," she replied with a smile and shook her head.
"I know, I'm just giving you a hard time."
"Yeah, yeah, that, and you just really miss them, don't you?" Steph asked, watching as you nodded.
"I do," you told her honestly. "I haven't been away from Mia at all since she was born, right, and I don't know. I feel like I've become as reliant on her as she has on me and it's not that I'm worried something bad is going to happen when she's with Auston, he is so, so great with her, I'm just worried she's going to need me and I won't be there. I'd feel like a terrible mother. But I guess me leaving her alone with her dad was bound to happen at some point, right?"
"Yes, it was, but Y/N quit being so hard on yourself," your best friend said firmly. "You are an amazing mother, and no one thinks otherwise. You're also still very new to this whole parenting thing, so is Auston, but even with how hard I can imagine it must be with him not being there all the time, I still think the two of you are doing a damn good job. Mia is lucky to have such great parents, oh, and Frank too. Can't forget about your firstborn."
"Never," you laughed, before smiling at her thankfully. "Man, you really know how to not let me get stuck in my thoughts and sass me when I need it."
"You do the same for me, hun," Steph smiled back. "It's what friends are for."
"Very true, but do know that I appreciate it. Auston and I wouldn't be able to do as well as we are if we didn't have our friends like you and Mitch, or our families keeping us sane. So, thank you."
"Stop, I haven't been on the brink of tears like this since I first met Mia," she whined, but you knew she meant it lovingly. "Now I'm feeling all mushy."
"You and me both," you told her then glanced down at your food. "Steph, would you be mad if I headed home after this? I really do miss my family, and I know it hasn't been that long but-."
"You don't need to justify yourself, babe, of course, I'm not going to be mad."
"Are you sure?"
"Yes," she stated. "Mitch is going to bring Zeus down here when he comes to pick me up, and we're going to take him for a walk, it's been a while since he's roamed downtown streets. Would you mind if we stopped by to visit Mia for a little bit before going home too?"
"I wouldn't mind at all."
~*~
Back at the condo, Auston was having an interesting time.
He would've been lying if he said he wasn't a little bit nervous about being left alone with his daughter for the first time, and the moment you walked out the door, that feeling escalated. But, he refused to let you know that he was stressed because he didn't want to ruin your day. So, he sucked it up and mentally prepared himself for what was to come.
The first hour or so was easy enough. Mia was fast asleep lying on Auston's chest as he was stretched across the couch, thinking of how he had everything under control and nothing to worry about. He even, after a lot of consideration, decided to post a picture of his sleeping baby on Instagram, followed by another video just as she was waking up.
But what wasn't shown in that video, was the panic he felt.
It wasn't the first time he had dealt with a fussy Mia just after she woke up, and surely wouldn't be the last, but he couldn't keep himself from thinking of how sometimes she would simply just want her mom.
At just a month old, you were convinced Mia was a true daddy's girl with how cuddly and content she became whenever Auston held her, but there were still times that even he wasn't enough for her to relax after getting worked up. It was clear that Mia found comfort in both of her parents, but there was the odd time she would need you to cuddle or hum her back to sleep regardless of how hard Auston tried. He was afraid then was going to be one of those times.
Although Mia loved being around Auston, which he knew, he couldn't get over how easily you were able to soothe her. It was like you had a magic touch or something, and he didn't know how well Mia would take to you not being there once she woke up.
However, it ended up not being as bad as he was expecting.
Once Mia woke up, she was rather fussy, and Auston could feel himself gradually getting more anxious because of it. She didn't want her bottle, didn't need a diaper change; nothing seemed to be going right. In a spur of the moment, with not being sure what else to do, he lifted her up from where she was laying and held her close. He supported her head as she leaned against his shoulder and started swaying them back and forth, whispering soothing words of how much he loved her and how everything was going to be ok.
She eventually stopped wailing but was still crying, and Auston felt terrible. Even Frank stayed nearby, keeping close tabs on what was going on, but still, nothing worked. Auston was on the verge of calling you, or even his mother, by that point, even though he didn't want to, but then he remembered something. Music.
He remembered you telling him on multiple Facetime calls while he was away playing hockey how if Mia woke up unhappy and just wouldn't stop crying, you would sing to her or just put on music, and she would eventually calm down. Auston had seen it for himself a few times, too and cursed himself for not thinking of it earlier.
Without a second thought, he grabbed a remote off the coffee table and turned on the stereo. Edwin McCain's I'll Be started softly playing from the speakers, and Mia almost instantly reacted. Her cries turned into sniffles and eventually faded into complete silence as Auston rubbed soft circles on her back and hummed along to the tune. She became so quiet that by the end of the song, Auston was positive she had fallen back asleep, but when he looked down at her, she looked up to him with wide eyes and let out a happy squeal.
It took a lot in Auston to not melt right then and there over how much he loved his daughter. He was so glad she was content with him and decided to keep the music on as he continued swaying and singing while Champagne Supernova by Oasis began playing next. It was a dramatic performance, that's for sure, but Mia seemingly loved it for she didn't get upset again and just stared up at her dad in awe for the entire seven and a half minutes of the song.
After that, Auston kept the stereo on as he continued holding Mia and moved into the kitchen so he could grab something to eat. Once he was done, he went back to the living room and set Mia on her blanket next to Frank while trying to figure out what to do next. He was about to put on Netflix when his phone sounded with a new notification from Snapchat. It ended up being a video from his sister Breyana zooming in on his older sister Alex as she sat across the room. Once Alex looked directly at the camera, a filter that made her eyes and mouth become huge became visible, and then the video ended with a high pitched version of Bre's laugh sounding from behind the phone.
Shaking his head and chuckling at the two, Auston then opened the camera part of his Snapchat to send back a video of himself with the same filter. Once he started recording, he was about to say something but then decided against it as he swapped the camera to show Mia laying on her blanket, but now with the filter on her face as Auston continued zooming in. Without even watching the video, he saved it and sent it back to Bre before sitting on the floor next to Mia and showing her one of her stuffed animals.
A few minutes later, he got a text.
Bre
Please tell me you kept that video, I can't stop laughing.
Surely it wasn't that funny, Auston thought, but when he unlocked his phone again and actually watched the video, he too couldn't stop laughing and decided to take more videos and pictures just like it. He was quick to discover which filters he liked best and some of the clips were just too good that he couldn't not share it with anyone else, so he posted them to his close friends Instagram story for others to enjoy as well.
Auston was well aware that you would see the things he posted too, and couldn't help but laugh as he imagined what you'd say about them once you were home.
Mia eventually grew hungry, so Auston gave her some of her bottle before they mindlessly wandered back to the living room and attempted to kill time.
After another hour of him just laying on the ground next to his daughter, making random noises and expressions went by, Auston eventually grew bored and decided that he, Mia and Frank deserved some fresh air and wanted to go for a walk. He still hadn't heard from you, so he assumed that Steph somehow managed to get you to keep your cool while you were out and figured you'd still be gone for a little while longer. He didn't bother texting you to let you know they were going out, just got himself and Mia all bundled up to face Toronto's cold, February air and went on his way.
The nice thing about winter in Toronto was that a lot of clothing was needed. If you weren't bundled up, you'd feel like you were freezing, and it always gave Auston an excuse to look unrecognizable as he roamed the streets. It was great.
This time was no exception, either. Auston put on his winter coat, boots, hat, and a scarf covering most of his face before looking down at Mia, who was almost unrecognizable. She was snuggled in her stroller, wearing a very warm and fuzzy onesie, and covered with multiple blankets because Auston would never forgive himself if she got cold.
It was obvious she was content, though, because, after only about five minutes of being outside, she was starting to fall asleep again.
The sun was beginning to set as a soft coat of snow fell from the sky. Although it was cold, it was nice, and Auston was glad he decided to leave the condo rather than staying cooped up in it for the entire day. Frank seemed thankful too as he tried to bite at the falling snowflakes as the three of them walked down the street.
They soon came to one of the nearby off-leash dog parks, and Auston decided to let Frank roam around in the fenced area for a little bit. Once he let the Goldendoodle off his leash, Auston looked down to see Mia wide awake again and looking up at him. She wasn't fussing again, which Auston was thankful for, but she was moving lots and making noises, so he took that as her wanting to be held.
By the way, she cuddled up against him, it was apparent that's exactly what she wanted, and he couldn't help but smile because of it. He held her close as he glanced around to locate Frank, who was on the other side of the park playing with a chocolate lab, before reaching down to grab Mia's blanket so that he could bundle her up again.
The next time Auston looked for Frank, he noticed a woman crouched down petting the pup. Her back was to him as she rubbed the back of Frank's ears and the chocolate lab from moments prior, walked around nearby; making sure to rub against the woman for some attention as well. He stepped closer to them, ready to call Frank back over so he wouldn't be a nuisance, but then the lab bolted towards him excitedly.
"Woah, hey buddy," Auston said as he leaned down to pet the dog, being mindful of Mia in the process and then noticing the dog's name tag. "Zeus?"
By the way, the dog responded to his name, Auston immediately assumed this was the Zeus he thought it was and started looking around from Mitch. But then, someone spoke up from behind him.
"You know, if it wasn't for Mia's blanket, I don't think I would have recognized you," the voice said, making Auston turn around only to become face to face with you. "Well, Frank was a dead giveaway too, but you're really feeling the whole incognito thing today, huh?"
"Hey," was all he said as a smile grew across his lips. "What are you doing here? How was your day?"
"It was good," you told him. "Mitch picked Steph and me up with Zeus and were all going to come back to the condo, but decided to stop here first to let Zeusy run around a bit. I can honestly say I wasn't expecting Frank to run up to me out of nowhere."
"I'm not even surprised that he did to be honest.."
At that, you smiled.
"Me neither," you chuckled, as Auston wrapped his free arm around your waist and pulled you into his embrace. You accepted the gesture and melted into his touch a little bit before looking down at Mia. "How was today?"
"A lot smoother than I was expecting," he replied honestly. "Got a little worried at one point, but we managed."
"Good. I'm sad I wasn't needed, but I am also really glad things were ok."
"You're always needed and wanted, babe, you have no reason to think otherwise."
"I know," you responded and leaned against his shoulder as you looked down at your daughter asleep in her father's arms. "We're doing alright at this whole parenting thing, aren't we?"
"I'd say so," he said before pecking the top of your head. "It's a challenge, that's for sure, but I'm glad to be experiencing it with you."
If you weren't already feeling mushy from your talk with Steph earlier, you definitely were then. You really did love doing life with Auston and were about to remind him of that, but then a voice spoke up from nearby.
"Is that my favourite Matthews?" Mitch asked as he and Step approached, Steph rolling her eyes at the comment. "Lemme see her."
"She's sleeping right now, but once we get back at the condo, she's all yours," you told him, knowing how much both he and Steph adored your daughter.
"If you're careful," Steph stressed. "We don't need you almost dropping her again."
"That was one time!" Mitch argued, making you all laugh.
"You're lucky you redeemed yourself," Auston teased before looking back at you. "What do you say we get Frank and Zeus and head back?"
"Sounds good to me," you replied, feeling all warm on the inside as you went on to spend the rest of the night with your little family and best friends.

Tumblr media
Part One | Part Two | Part Three | Part Four - Bit 1 | Bit 2 | Bit 3 | Part Five
Thank you all so much for your wonderful support for this fic. It’s bouncing along and you guys are encouraging me so much ::hugs you all::
This fic is all @vegetacide ‘s fault :P
Many thanks to @scribbles97 @i-am-chidorixblossom and @vegetacide for all the plot help and reading :D
I hope you enjoy this part :D
-o-o-o-
Virgil hated medication. Hated it with a violent passion. It messed with everything. Made him dumb, stupid and out of control. And the fog. The post-medication fog was almost as bad as whatever injury he was trying to hide from.
This time was no different. His head was full of cotton wool and it was hard to put two thoughts together.
He knew he was in the infirmary. The crinkle of plastic cotton sheets gave that away. That and the smell. Grandma kept this place clean the old-fashioned way – antiseptic and scrubbing brushes. The fact MAX, one of the most technologically advanced AIs on the planet, often helped her do the cleaning was an oxymoron, but what worked did the job as far as she was concerned.
As usual, he made the same mistake he always made in this situation and tried to move.
He couldn’t help the groan as his arm complained.
“Virg?”
Gordon.
A slow blink and the orange of his little brother’s shirt wobbled into focus. “Gords?”
“Hey, Virg. How are you feeling?”
A grunt and a few more neurons came online. Apparently, apart from some stiffness, only his arm was giving him trouble.
And his head.
Damn fog.
“Been worse.” He focussed on his brother’s face and frowned. “Are you okay?” Gordon’s eyes were red rimmed and strained, his face pale. It was so unlike his little brother’s usual demeanour, alarm bells started ringing and the fog was shoved aside as much as possible. “Gordon, talk to me.” He shoved his good arm under and pushed himself up.
Gordon reacted immediately, shooting up out of his seat and attempting to usher Virgil to lie back on the bed. “Hey, relax, Virgil. I’m f-fine.”
But his sunshine brother’s voice cracked on the last word and Gordon, the brightest ray of light amongst his brothers, WASP agent, survivor, tough as nails IR operative, had a tremble in his voice.
What the hell?
Virgil made vertical, Gordon’s hands attempting to both help and hinder. The world spun for a few long moments, but he was more worried about Gordon. “What’s wrong?”
“Damn it, Virgil, Grandma’s going to kill me if you hurt yourself.”
A breath. “I’m fine.” Focus. He threw off the covers and swung his legs around so he could sit without falling over. His arm was strapped to his bare chest.
Oh.
Ohhhh.
Shit.
Gordon was looking at him with worried eyes. “I can explain.” The words fell from his mouth.
His brother had his hand on Virgil’s good arm. “Virg, please lie down. Grandma’s angry enough already.”
“What?” Damn the fog!
And Gordon was hugging him.
Ever so gently, his arms, so much wirier but no less athletic, seemed so small to Virgil. They always had. Emphasis on the words ‘little brother’.
Virgil’s one good arm returned the embrace as best he could. “Gords, what is it?”
“I’m sorry.”
“For what?”
“For everything.”
“What? Gords, I don’t have the brainpower, or the coffee, for a guessing game.” Ugh, medication meant no coffee allowed, damnit!
Gordon stepped back and despite all the aquanaut’s years of experience and full adulthood, all Virgil could see was that scared kid who had lost his remaining parent in a fireball all those years ago.
He grabbed his little brother’s arm. “Gordon, talk to me.”
Strained carnelian eyes. “Why did you do it?”
“Do what?”
“Your tattoo.”
A swallow. “Because I needed to.” It had been a dark time.
There had been too many dark times.
Gordon’s eyes were focussed on Virgil’s shoulder, now swathed in bandages, likely hiding most of his tally.
“But Cass…”
Virgil’s heart froze. Pain far too recent to face. He couldn’t go there. Not yet.
No, please, not yet.
“It was Dad. And Mom. I…I wanted to acknowledge them. I needed them...with me.” How the hell did he explain it?
How did he explain the gaping holes they had left behind that he could not fill? Their ghosts haunted him in the deep of night. They hovered at the edge of his perception, taunting at being there, but when he turned, they were just as gone as they actually were.
Cass smiled at him in his dreams, his list of unfulfilled promises in her beautiful eyes.
“It helps.” A reminder of reality.
“But all those other dates?”
“A reminder. To try harder. To acknowledge their loss.”
“But-“
“It is my choice, Gordon. It does what I need it to do.”
His brother’s expression altered just a little, resignation creeping in. But then… “I have a book.” It was a whispered admission.
Blink. “What?”
Gordon straightened just a little. “I have a book. With names. Notes. What I remember about them. The ones I couldn’t help.”
Virgil’s eyes widened. “Gords…” His hand tightened around his brother’s arm.
The aquanaut looked up at him. “I do understand. Perhaps not the medium. But…yeah.” He looked away and sighed. “Dad’s pissed.”
Oh, shit.
“He and Scott had a showdown like I have never seen. It’s like Dad expected Scott to look after us. Like we aren’t adults. Like it was his responsibility.” Gordon’s lips thinned. “And Grandma…hell, Virg.”
And there was the source of the strain in his brother’s eyes. Family could hurt like no other.
“Help me up.” Virgil shuffled to the edge of the bed.
“Oh, god, hell no, Virg. Grandma will have your ass.” He floundered in an attempt to stop Virgil from climbing off the bed.
“Well, apparently, she already has everyone else’s, so I’ll just add it to her collection.” His feet hit the floor and he wobbled. But a little more spine and he was fully upright, still dressed in his grubby jeans.
The remains of his shirt lay on a chair in the corner. A few unsteady steps and he grabbed it. With his arm strapped up, it would be enough to hide his shame.
“Virg, don’t do this.”
“Could you please help me with my shirt?”
His brother sighed. “Damnit, Virgil, Grandma, Dad and Scott are all going to kill me for this.”
“Not your fault.” He fumbled with flannel and the material slipped from his fingers to fall to the floor. For the love of…!
But Gordon was there. His hands picked up the shirt and draped it across Virgil’s shoulders, helping him into the one remaining sleeve and buttoning it up to hold it in place best the ruined piece of clothing could do.
“Thanks, Gordon.”
His brother was not impressed. “You can put that on my headstone.”
“This is not on you.”
“It’s not on Scott either, but that doesn’t seem to matter.”
Virgil straightened as best he could. “I’ll fix it.”
“Virg-“
A hand on his brother’s shoulder, he tipped his head down a little for emphasis, grabbing his brother’s eyes with his own. “I’ll fix it.”
Gordon still wasn’t happy, but he put his hand over Virgil’s for just a moment. “I’m coming, too. Even if all I can do is prevent you from falling on your face. I’m dead either way, anyway.”
“This is not on you.”
“Yeah, whatever.”
Virgil sighed, let his hand drop and turned towards the door.
Steps a little wonky, he went looking for the rest of his family.
To kick his own share of asses.

Written for @galaxycastiel and @jellydeans Destiel December 2020 challenge!
Day 3: Presents
Title: You’ll Know All I Haven’t Said (Ao3 link)
Summary: Cas has always had an unnerving knack for knowing what Dean wants the most, even before Dean knows it himself.
Tags: Fluff, First Kiss, High School AU, Friends to Lovers
A/N: okay so I'd intended this as a short drabble, but here we are instead with a 2,500 word fluffy high school au fic that honestly cheered me up so much to write. I hope you enjoy it - this is my first entry and I’m pretty nervous about posting so any feedback would honestly make my day <3 And if anyone wants to be added to a tag list for my fics for this challenge let me know!
Title from Pablo Neruda: "In one kiss, you'll know all I haven't said."
Cas always gives the best presents. Dean knows it’s something to do with his unnervingly observant nature, the way he’s just so tuned into the people around him. Or maybe just Dean. The thought makes something unfurl in Dean’s stomach that’s feels a bit like fear, or anticipation maybe. It happens a lot when he thinks of Cas, these days. Which is a lot, if Dean is being totally honest. Cas is his best friend, has been since they were both eight years old, so it’s normal that he occupies a lot of space in Dean’s head. It’s just that these days – sometimes it’s so much that it scares Dean, just a little. Because he knows there isn’t much time left where Cas will be a daily fixture of his life; next fall, they’re both heading off to college and everything’s going to be different.
That’s why, Dean tells himself, he’s spent so much time trying to think of what to give Cas this Christmas. It’s hard to top Cas’s gift-giving skills. He has always had an unnerving knack for somehow knowing exactly what Dean wants, even before Dean knows it himself. Not that Dean would tell him, but all his most treasured gifts over the years have been from Cas. A wonky, handmade wooden impala car Cas made in his Dad’s workshop when he was twelve. Zeppelin concert tickets the Christmas they were both fifteen. Last year, an anthology of Neruda with Cas’s scrawling writing on the opening page, which Dean has read more than the poems the book contains (not that he’d admit that to Cas).
The only problem with Cas being so amazing at choosing gifts is that Dean always feels under pressure to match Cas’s presents, give him something that he’ll treasure as much as Dean treasures the gifts Cas gives him. And the thing is, Cas is hard to buy for, hard to read, a lot of the time. Even though Dean spends more time with Cas than anyone else, and spends even more time thinking about Cas, he’s never quite sure what’s going on in his head. And that makes it difficult, because Dean so wants to make this last Christmas before they both go their separate ways special.
The thought of not being around Cas every day makes his whole chest ache, so Dean tries not to do it. But sometimes it just creeps up on him and it’s like having a bucket of ice water poured over him, a constant knife in his chest that twists deeper and deeper as it gets closer to the time he knows they’ll have to say goodbye. It’s not just about parting ways – Dean knows there’s no way he and Cas won’t stay best friends. But it's like there's also something that Dean's always been waiting for that might not get to happen, that graduating and leaving for college might get in the way of, and even though Dean has no idea what it is he’s waiting for, the idea that it might get pushed aside, might never happen, is somehow unbearable.
Anyway, after a week of agonising over options, it’s Christmas Eve and Dean is standing on Cas’s doorstep, breath clouding out in front of him in the frosty air. There’s small parcel in the pocket of his leather jacket that he fiddles with nervously as he waits, feeling the bumps of his own bad gift-wrapping skills. His stomach flips over inexplicably when the hall lights flicker on there’s the sound of keys in the lock.
“Dean,” Cas smiles, quiet but sincere, and stands back to let Dean in. Dean is hit, as he is not infrequently these days, by how good-looking Cas has become. He’s not built but he’s lean, strong-looking, with a kind of grace about the way he carries himself. Tonight, he’s wearing an indigo knitted sweater that he got in a thrift store with Dean last year, and it makes the blue of his gaze feel infinite as it sweeps over Dean, familiar and warm.
“Hey,” Dean smiles stupidly, suddenly feeling self-conscious as he steps into the hallway. It’s warm and smells faintly of incense and home-baking, but they don’t linger, heading straight up the stairs to Cas’s room as usual.
“Very festive,” Dean remarks as Cas closes the door behind them, noting the multi-coloured fairy lights Cas has strewn around the window, glowing softly and casting the room into muted colours. Dean secretly prefers Cas’s room to his; he’s spent so much time in it over the years that it feels just as much like home, maybe even a little more because it has Cas in it.
“Thanks,” Cas is standing by the door, arms folded across his chest as he watches Dean inspect his bookshelf, run his fingertip along the spines. “There’s a new one there for you, if you want it.” His expression is uncharacteristically unreadable. Not that Cas is easy to read – not by any stretch of the imagination. But Dean’s spent a long time mapping out his different expressions and mannerisms, and it’s not often these days that he’s faced with one he can’t place at all. This one is not unfamiliar, though. It’s one he’s noticed playing across Cas’s features increasingly often in recent months, generally when he glances up and catches Cas off guard. It’s an expression that niggles away at the back of Dean’s mind when he’s trying to get to sleep at night, gets under his skin.
Dean looks reluctantly away from Cas and back to the shelves, eyeing them more closely. His hand pauses on an unfamiliar hardback, Bluebeard by Vonnegut. “This?”
“If you want it,” Cas says, and Dean thinks he detects a note of apprehension beneath the warmth, a kind of distraction, as though he’s thinking about something else, which is a sharp contrast to his often unnerving focus that’s usually directed Dean’s way.
“Thanks,” Dean takes the book of the shelf and flips through the pages, catches a few flashes of Cas’s dextrous scrawl.
“Don’t – don’t read my notes now,” Cas crosses the room, takes the book from Dean’s hands and closes it. “Not when I’m here.”
Dean eyes him curiously. One of his favourite things about Cas lending him books all the time is getting to read Cas’s private thoughts filling the margins. “Is this my Christmas present? Not like you to forgo the fancy paper and the chance to upstage my gift-wrapping skills.”
A smile pulls at the corner of Cas’s mouth, his eyes crinkle with quiet amusement even though the nervousness doesn’t dissipate, Dean notes. “No, it’s not your present.”
“Then where is it?” Dean asks, glancing around the room – but there’s no sight of a gift. Just the soft glow of the fairy lights and Cas’s notebooks on his desk, a couple of jumpers hanging over the back of his chair, the little cactus Dean gave him for his birthday two years ago sitting stoutly on his bedside table.
“You’re very demanding,” Cas admonishes, handing the book back to Dean and crossing the room to sit down on one end of the window seat, curling up like a cat. There’s a twinkle of amusement in his blue gaze, but he pulls the sleeves of his jumper down over his hands, something Dean knows he only does when he’s nervous. The thought makes a pang of nerves curl through Dean too, although he doesn’t know why, doesn’t know why it feels like they’re waiting for something.
“Well, you’re very mysterious,” Dean counters, flopping down on the other end of the window-seat and pushing one of his socked feet playfully at Cas’s. “And unnervingly good at presents, which is why I’m so particularly demanding today. I’m expecting great things. How is that you always seem to know exactly what I want?”
“I very much hope that’s true this year,” Cas says, quiet in a way that makes Dean catch his breath, inexplicably nervous too. He’s looking down, still fiddling with the stray thread from the cuff of his jumper. His expression is uncharacteristically vulnerable in the soft light, messy dark hair and wide eyes so blue that they make Dean’s heart fumble a beat in his chest when Cas suddenly looks up, holds Dean’s gaze. It’s very quiet, the space between them. Dean feels very aware of his heart, doesn’t know why it’s suddenly going quite so fast. “You go first,” Cas says, low, eyes intent and full of something, and it takes Dean a moment to remember what they’re talking about.
“Oh – yeah, okay,” he stutters, feeling his cheeks flush as he fumbles in the pocket of his jacket and pulls out the package he’d wrapped earlier. “Look – don’t get too excited. You know I’m not great at presents, but I wanted to do something special, because you know –” he breaks off, trying to push down the sudden sharpness in his chest, “This might be the last Christmas we spend together, and I don’t want you to go forgetting me when you’re off being all genius at some school I’d never be able to get into.” He thrusts the present unceremoniously at Cas. “Badly wrapped as usual, sorry,” he adds, as an afterthought.
“Dean,” Cas is holding the wrapped present, but he’s not looking at it. He’s looking at Dean with the kind of familiar, earnest sincerity that makes Dean’s heart ache, that he’s going to miss so much. “There is no chance of me ever forgetting you,” Cas says slowly, and the something in his gaze deepens, turning into something that makes Dean feel simultaneously as though he wants to look away and never look away again. The space between them suddenly feels intimate, theirs. Just the two of them, the way Dean always aches for when it’s not.
“Thanks,” Dean says, gathering himself, but his voice sounds unsteady to his own ears, like he suddenly feels. Off-kilter, dizzy, like they’re both spinning into orbit. “Okay, okay, open the goddamn present already,” Dean mumbles, awkward, because he doesn’t know what he’ll do if Cas keeps looking at him like that, and he’s afraid of how much he wants to find out.
Cas looks at him a beat longer, before dropping his attention to the present, unwrapping it carefully with his long, dextrous fingers. There’s a moment when he pulls the leather-bound album out of the shell of wrapping where Dean feels hot all over, embarrassed by his own sentiment. He digs his nails into his palm, watches as Cas opens it and goes still, reading Dean’s inscription. There’s a long pause, and then he turns the first page, and then the next and the next, looking at the photos of him and Dean that Dean has collected from over the years: the two of them togged up in winter coats and red welly boots, making snow-angels in Dean’s back garden; Cas aged ten with a tearstained face, watching as Dean puts a band-aid on his grazed knee; both of them on their first day of middle school, Cas moody with pins all over his jacket and scruffy converse sneakers, Dean grinning with his letterman; Cas, windswept and smiling two summers ago, lying on a sandy beach and gazing up at Dean with that a hint of that something Dean can’t get out of his head now.
Cas finally looks up at him, eyes so blue it hurts to look at them. “Thank you, Dean,” his voice is slightly hoarse. “This –” he breaks off, swallows, turning the album over in his hands. “This must have taken you ages.”
“Don’t mention it,” Dean mumbles gruffly, cheeks heating up. His heart is racing, and he wants to change the subject, take the focus away from how intimate the present suddenly feels now that Cas is holding all their memories in his hands. “Anyway, enough of that. I’m glad you like it, but you know I can’t handle chick flick moments. Come on, your turn. Where’s mine?”
The unreadable look is back on Cas’s face with more intensity, combined with something Dean definitely recognises as nervousness now. Cas’s chest is rising and falling more rapidly, eyes wider than usual, cheeks slightly flushed as he holds Dean’s gaze, almost like he’s steeling himself for something. “Okay,” he says, seemingly more to himself than to Dean. Okay, close your eyes.”
“What?” Dean blinks.
“Close them,” Cas says, with slightly more authority, but Dean can see the way Cas’s fingers are trembling where he’s still holding all of their memories, their whole friendship in his hands. Cas glances down at it unreadably, like it’s suddenly fragile, and then back at Dean. He swallows, repeats, “Dean,” quietly imploring.
Dean closes his eyes. Cas’s gaze and the fairy lights all fade into to soft shadow. Vision gone, Dean suddenly feels very aware of the proximity between them, the almost imperceptible warmth of Cas beside him, the way their thighs are pressed lightly together. Dean has a sudden urge to nudge his closer to Cas’s, to close all the gaps and feel how warm Cas really is. He breathes in, suddenly breathless, and is overwhelmed by the smell of Cas’s skin, familiar and musky, a hint of the patchouli incense he always burns when he’s working. The smell of home. Dean’s heart is suddenly racing so hard it hurts. “Cas?”
Cas is silent. There’s a pause that might be a single heartbeat or the whole last ten years, and then there’s warm, tentative pressure against Dean’s mouth. Cas’s lips, silken soft and hot, brushing tenderly, slowly, against his. Cas’s hands cupping his face, rough and warm and trembling, holding him still as the world spins away into nothing. Cas’s breath, gentle and unsteady against Dean’s mouth, punctuating the kiss.
Dean’s eyes fly open, and the first thing he sees is blue. Deep, exhilarating blue. Like the sky at that moment just between dusk and darkness. And then he’s drowning. He ducks forward and captures Cas’s mouth again with his, stomach somersaulting at the stifled sound Cas makes, like he thought Dean wouldn’t do this, wouldn’t want this. The heat unfurling deep Dean’s chest intensifies at the way Cas’s hands grab at the front of Dean’s shirt, clumsy and desperate, the way Cas shifts closer, all warmth. Cas’s mouth is hot and wet and perfect, tongue twining with Dean’s as they kiss, pressing so close together that their noses nudge together, that Dean’s not sure who’s heartbeat belongs to who anymore.
When they break apart for breath, Cas’s cheeks are flushed and his eyes are dark and shining. He’s so beautiful Dean aches with it.
“Merry Christmas, Dean,” Cas says, voice low and heavy in a way that makes arousal curl through Dean. His eyes are full of quiet happiness, and that something that Dean hasn’t been able to get out of his head for months. It’s wonderful to finally know what it is, to know that it is this. Dean feels like he’s floating.
“Merry Christmas,” Dean echoes, dazedly, and his voice sounds as rough as Cas’s. He shakes his head, smiling in disbelief. “I told you that you always know what I want before I do,” he pauses, “Though, amazing as all the others were, I think this present might just top the list.” Dean is vaguely aware that he’s grinning giddily, heart still pounding.
“I wasn’t sure you’d like it,” Cas admits, looking down, and Dean catches a hint of the nervousness Cas was full of earlier, that makes sense now. Dean feels a rush of warmth for him at the courage it must have taken to cross that line, to take a whole ten years of friendship in his hands and do what Dean never had the courage for.
“Hey,” Dean reaches out, twines their hands together. It’s reassuring the way he can feel Cas trembling a bit too, reminding him they’re both in this together, it’s just the two of them, the way Dean likes it best. “Cas. It’s the best present I’ve ever had,” he says, honestly. Cas looks up and smiles at him, brighter than the lights above them, than anything Dean’s ever known – and Dean suddenly has to rethink his words, because Cas looking at him like that, so full of love and happiness, is better than anything Dean could ever have imagined.

Cherp Tag Searching Guide
Okay so serious post for once (wowie) but this is the only cherp-related blog I run and I think this might genuinely be useful for some people.
Gonna be a bit long so for those not wanting to expand this post it’s going to cover: Advanced Search, Blacklist/Whitelists, and “Or” Function Searches.
Advanced Search
For anyone who doesn’t know, you can access Cherp’s Advanced Search feature through here (I’m in dark mode, but the general location should be the same):
Tumblr media
When you click on it you’ll be greeted with a page that looks like the “New Prompt” page, where you can type in multiple tags to search at once. For example, if you only want to see Cis Male/Cis Male prompts, you could tick the Cis Male box under both “Playing” and “Looking For” and search.
Notes: You may still end up with some non-m/m prompts if, for example, someone tags m on both side for an m/f ship because they don’t care who plays who, but overall this works well enough to narrow down your results. Also, this is only an “and” search. For example, ticking both “Cis Male” and “Trans Male” under Playing will bring up prompts where both Cis Male and Trans Male are tagged, not if Cis Male or Trans Male is tagged.
Blacklist/Whitelist
You can find the Blacklist and Whitelist under the Directory dropdown, here:
Tumblr media
Both pages look similar, except one is your Blacklist and one is your Whitelist (duh). You can enter as many tags you want into either list, just separate them by commas. However, do note the more tags you add to your Blacklist/Whitelist, the longer it’s going to take your directory to load.
So, for example, if you wanted to Blacklist both Homestuck and MHA you can go to the Fandom box under “Playing Character” and/or “Looking For” and type “Homestuck, My Hero Academia” and it’ll add both tags to your Blacklist. The Whitelist works the same way.
Notes: The exact way the lists work is that the Blacklist will remove all prompts tagged with any of the tags in your blacklist. However, the Whitelist overrides the Blacklist. So if you had Homestuck in your Blacklist but MHA in your Whitelist, any prompts with Homestuck will be blocked from appearing in your directory, unless it also had the MHA tag, in which case the MHA Whitelist overrides the Homestuck Blacklist and the prompt will show up in your directory.
“Or” Function Search
There is no official way to run an “or” search. What I mean by this is, for example, searching for prompts that are tagged with the prompt having either “Cis Male” or “Trans Male.” However, there are a few ways you can Macgyver a pseudo-or search using a combination of the Blacklist/Whitelist and Advanced Search function.
The gist is this: Use the Blacklist/Whitelist to search “or” tags, and use the Advanced Search to search “and” tags.
An Example:
I want a Homestuck RP where I’m playing a Cis Male, but I want to play against a Cis Male or a Trans Male.
Go to your Blacklist. Enter all the Gender tags you are not interested in. For this it would be: Cis Female, Trans Female, Intersex, Fantasy Morphology (Feminine), Fantasy Morphology (Masculine), Fantasy Morphology (Non-Binary), Non-binary, Genderless, Genderbend. Save your new Blacklist.
Go to Advanced Search. Input “Homestuck” in one or both of the fandom boxes and tick “Cis Male” under the Looking For section. Search.
The first part makes it so the only prompts that show up in your directory are prompts tagged “Cis Male”, “Trans Male”, or both. (Any prompts that have no Gender tags will also show up, so if you don’t want that then the next method I’ll give will fix that issue.) Then, the second part is you running a search on that cut-down directory for the prompts that are both Homestuck and looking for Cis Males. Tada!
You can technically do this for any set of tags, although obviously some are just easier to do than others. For any tag that’s not a Maturity Warning or a Gender tag (which are essentially the easiest tags to directly Blacklist) the easier way to run the “or” search is to basically Blacklist everything and then throw the tags you want to include in your “or” search into the Whitelist. The Maturity Warning tags would be the easiest to Blacklist since there’s only four, but if for some reason that doesn’t work for you then you can Blacklist all the Gender tags (but that will lead to the issue of prompts with no Gender tags showing up again).
Another Example:
I want to play a Dave Strider against either a Dirk, Gamzee, or Karkat. Blacklisting every other character in Homestuck obviously isn’t going to work. So what can you do instead?
Blacklist everything. Since there’s no weirdness with the Maturity Tags you can just use those: Safe For Work, NSFW Violent, NSFW Sexual, NSFW Extreme.
Add all the characters you’re interested in playing against into your Whitelist. So for this you’d put the following under the Playing Character box: Dirk Strider, Gamzee Makara, Karkat Vantas.
Go to the directory, and search for Looking For: Dave Strider.
Step 1 Blacklists everything in the directory. Step 2 then Whitelists the characters you want to play against, thus any prompt with any of the three characters tagged will override the Blacklist and show up. Step 3 then searches for the character you want to play within that narrowed down prompt list.
Yes it’s a bit wonky, and if you use the Blacklist/Whitelist for anything else you’ll basically have to erase it all and change it to do this. But if you don’t really use the Blacklist/Whitelist anyways or don’t mind jumping through the hoops I’m just here to say that this is technically a way to do this. It’s not perfect, but it works.
So yeah, that’s all. Hopefully this helps at least one person out. Happy cherping!
Below I’ve just got the Maturity and Gender tags listed out for you, just for ease of copy/pasting in case you need it.
All Maturity Tags:
Safe For Work, NSFW Violent, NSFW Sexual, NSFW Extreme
All Gender Tags:
Cis Male, Trans Male, Cis Female, Trans Female, Intersex, Fantasy Morphology (Feminine), Fantasy Morphology (Masculine), Fantasy Morphology (Non-Binary), Non-binary, Genderless, Genderbend

headcanon for the end of TUA (klaus is going to die)
(tw for what could be interpreted as suicidal themes. i don’t intend for it to be that, but it’s worth mentioning now)
((i have no facts behind this theory or any source material to support it, it’s just something i think fits thematically))
Basically i think Klaus is going to die, but more complicated than that. I have a lot of klaus headcanons where his powers would allow him to transcend into the afterlife from the living world. we see it briefly in when he talks to god in season 1. But i think eventually he would be able to travel there at will (like my Orpheus post).
So the end of TUA comes and theyve got to wrap everybody’s arcs up (or theyll kill everyone Toy story 3 style). like they probably aren’t going to be superheroes forever and will have to go their separate ways. like Five would take over the commission (i don’t think he would, but thats an example how his arc started and how it ends. Five is in conflict with the commission (and time itself) from the beginning, so his ending is coming to peace with it)
But Klaus’ arc is still a little unclear. his character arc is the main focus, how he changes post-vietnam and post-time travel in season 2. but his story arc kind of meanders around the season. (probably cause 7 individual story arcs is a lot for a show)
For reference: character arc is who they are. Story arc is what they do. (they mix and mingle, but usually we can see the differences) story arc is more about plot. character arc is more about themes. story arcs are actions that lead to culminating events, usually in service to the greater plot of the show (Five’s conflict with the commission is a story arc, that has great effect on the plot). character arcs are experiences that lead to character growth/change (Klaus going to vietnam, coming back, getting sober to summon Dave, is a character arc)
So Klaus’ story arc hasn’t mattered so far in the grander plot of the show (so far). going to vietnam didn’t really have a plot significance to season 1, besides that it got Klaus sober for the final few episodes. the cult in season 2 ended up being kinda useless in the storyline, and meeting young Dave didn’t really have a plot significance either (and was kinda clunky with it’s character arc too).
I think robert sheean summed it up best in that behind the scenes clip where he says “Klaus’ arc in this last episode is running through the snow” (i’m paraphrasing). because none of Klaus’ story arc was significant to the plot of season 2, so he kinda didn’t have anything to do besides just be there at the final battle.
And I’m not forgetting that Ben left around this time too. Ben and Klaus’ arc was kinda put on the back burner up until then. there’s still a lot of unfinished thoughts in that arc, so i hope it is addressed in season 3. but Ben’s departure doesn’t play into Klaus’ story arc as much as it could (in terms of his powers or actions) but it did effect his character arc (that scene with vanya in the car).
But anyway, we are approaching season 3 with no clear story arc for Klaus to follow through. some new elements will be introduced of course, but lets look at the story elements we have so far:
Klaus is born with his powers >>> Reginald puts klaus in the mosselum >>>> klaus develops a drug addiction >>> klaus gets sober to better control his powers >>> klaus can now make ghosts corporeal and use them to fight
(i’m sure that you want to add other events in this, but I think this is the bare-bones story arc, excluding character arc experiences. these are the events that directly relate to the overall plot of the show)
So from here, i think the next obvious step is that Klaus will start developing his powers even more, and discover new abilities (we all want a klaus fight scene). but after that there’s kind of no map for further story arc. it depends greatly on the plot of season 3+.
But after this long build up here is my headcanon.
when the show ends, klaus is going to die. but not like he gets killed. I think he’s going to cross over to the afterlife with his powers, and stay there. by his own choice.
((this is the part that might read vaguely suicidal, but i really really don’t intend it that way))
Klaus’ story arc is about his conflict with his own powers (all the siblings arcs are this way. Five vs. Time. Allison vs. Truth. Diego vs Heroism. Luther vs. Power. Vanya vs. no powers) (ben is an unknown variable, but for season 3)
Klaus vs The afterlife: It is an intrinsic part of who he is. He is traumatized by it. he tries to escape it. he confronts it. he uses it.
And inevitably, he has to come to peace with it.
So at the end, what would that look like? well he’s avoided it for so long, to his own detriment, that the final step would be to accept it.
And I want to make this super clear: This does not mean i think Klaus deserves death or should be killed off by the writers. Death doesn’t mean non-existence in this case (which is what it usually means in narrative). There is an established afterlife in TUA, and Klaus’ powers allows him to access that afterlife.
So Klaus crossing over is less like literal death, and more like moving on to a different plane of existence. a metaphysical transition, not a lights-out gone-forever death.
And perhaps Klaus doesn’t “belong” in the living realm, in the way that he is always spiraling into dysfunction and self-abuse. he has never felt at peace in the living world (as far as the show shows).
I’m reminded of those fairy tales where a fae is found and raised by humans (or vice versa) and as they grow, they resent their differentness, and never feel like they fit into the world they are in. only when they find the place they belong, do they accept themselves. this trope exists in like every culture is remade a lot (from moses to tarzan)
So Klaus is the fae figure in this analogy, and the living world has adopted him, but it’s not where he belongs. and maybe the return to the afterlife will give him the self-acceptance and inner peace he needs.
And maybe visually we see the little girl god, og ben, dave, etc. the people who are on the other side, waiting for him. And maybe Klaus can dip into the living world if needed, because powers. but overall, the end of his story arc is to cross over.
(this was way longer than it meant and i haven’t done a hard-core character analysis/close reading in a couple years, so my terms and definitions are a little wonky)

More disabled sewing with Ivinenn!
Today on Disabled Sewing With Ivinenn, we have part 2 of bra-making. This post is also available at Dreamwidth for the full web 1.0 experience.
Part 1 is at this link for Tumblr; at this link for Dreamwidth.
I forgot to write a post about finishing my version of the Lengberg Castle bra! So here is what it ended up looking like on me:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It turned out very very comfortable, but not quite what I wanted - the darts just felt really wrong. You can see in this picture that I actually made the darts face different ways for each cup to see which was better, but I did not like either:
Tumblr media
It also had way too much ease, even after I marked it up and modified it to be tighter:
Tumblr media
So I started another garment, this time determined to move the darts into gathers on the bottom and sides.
Even though I KNOW that gathers don't provide as much support because they are looser by definition, I was still surprised that the gathers did not provide much support. Also I was not ultimately thrilled with the shape.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I guess I should have titled this one "neurodivergent sewing" because as you can see from the below pictures, I measured/draped, and then added several inches, because when I looked at the pattern from my measured/draped toile, I thought, "That is too small." Ahoy dysphoria!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I am very very fat, but apparently not as fat as I think I am, although this past week multiple doctors were grossed out by my fat body! Love the medical industry for me.
Anyway, this bra is made of pink cotton gauze so lightweight it is almost cheesecloth. This is a picture I took while putting together the third iteration of bust cups - I doubled the material and it is still transparent. It's so so so nice to sew, though - unlike when I was sewing with the beige muslin (or, if you look, you can see blue fabric with white and yellow flowers - that's a quilting cotton I was using for mockups) I didn't even need a thimble, even when I was making an eyelet through eight layers.
Tumblr media
Here are my silly eyelets that are so so so big, threaded with a piece of string I made by sewing scraps together and then rolling them and then just whipstitching. Catch me making a tube that has to turn inside out! Never! My fingers simply cannot accomodate that kind of finesse.
Tumblr media
Ultimately, v2 of the bra is not bad, but not what I want. But ok for wearing around the house! I guess I could mark it up and adjust it and make it tighter and more supportive but instead I moved on to iteration 3.
By the way: I know that you are “supposed to” sew in matching thread, BUT:
1. Thread matching neon pink cotton gauze is difficult and I don’t want to spend the money when I already have a spool of 5,000 yards of blue cotton thread;
2. It is MUCH easier to see what I’m doing when I can see the thread;
3. I knew this wasn’t going to be a final version, and I knew I wanted to upload it to tumblr, so I wanted to make sure YOU could see the thread. Look at my wonky stitches! Look at how nothing is the same size! And yet it is a garment that sticks together. I have had really bad tremors these past few weeks from weather related migraines, and also one of my medications, so my stitches will never be the tiny, neat stitches of a professional sewist, but that is OK by me.
Preview of iteration 3: the 3-piece bust cup.
To give you a sneak peek, here is the first version of this cup - three pieces. When I made it from the double-layered gauze, I then had to cut, like, viking style godets - 1 into the top of the inside and 1 into the top of the outside; then I had to match the top piece, so it got 3 godets. Exhausting. By the time I was done, my hand was trembling too much to take a picture. NEXT TIME.
Tumblr media
(I KNOW I can buy underwires, but I don't WANT an underwire bra. If I wanted an underwire bra, I could just go to Lane Bryant and drop $80 on one that would be uncomfortable and I wouldn't be able to breathe. My ultimate goal here is to actually be able to make these "bras" with a longer torso so that I can wear them as shirts under cardigans when I have to go into the office.)
Anyway, I suspect part of the problem is the fabric I'm using. Loosely woven fabric just IS NOT IT for this kind of project. I know other folks have used linen, but I find that the linen I like against my skin is also too loosely woven; plus I am not here for things that cannot be thrown into the washer with all my other garments. I think a cotton sateen might feel nice but be too heavy. I don't want a fabric that is man-made ("man-made") like rayon, and I don't want something plastic like polyester. I also am on multiple medications that make me overheat, in addition to just being a person who is always hot in general, so while I feel like a wool suiting would actually be PERFECT for this, I could not bear it.
Coming soon to my mailbox is a selection of 21 yards of fabric in 8 different weights - yes, I'm getting a cotton sateen, but I'm also getting a voile (slightly heavier than gauze but still light!) and a poplin shirting (crisp! tightly woven!).
I am also getting two different cotton knits, because I like pain. I mean. I do like pain, but actually not the kind of pain that comes with hand-sewing a knit. But I want some tank tops and I really need a knit for that unless I want to go through The Pain Of Braless Boobs In A Garment With Darts.
In other news, Mariah Pattie made basically exactly what I want to make out of the Lengberg Castle bra pattern, but since she is, you know, like, a professional sewist, hers look amazing. Envy!

💎⛰️🎢☀️📜✏️⭐📣🔦 for currents & 💡 for the scurvy fic. i need to know.
sparrow that’s. so many. (but you’re asking me to talk about currents and I am always looking for a reason to talk about currents so. Thank You)
(also, obvious spoilers under the cut for undeniable you (the currents pulling me onward so. if you care about that you might want to read the fic first)
💎- What was your favorite part?
I’d probably say...the beginning of chapter 7? Where it’s immediately post-trial and Klavier and Apollo are just so tired and at loose ends and they go and sit on the courthouse steps and talk. I basically wrote the entire fic in order to write the last 4 chapters--the emotional aftermath of the trial, but I had to write the trial first so it would have context.
⛰️-  What was the hardest part?
Figuring out the whole Gramarye Siblings situation, for sure. Because--the thing is that canon isn’t entirely cohesive on who did what when. I did a ton of research by perusing the wiki and taking notes on Jove, Thalassa, Magnifi, etc--and then I kind of just decided that if there was no coherent canon timeline, then I didn’t need to stick to it--and made as much of it up as I felt was necessary.
🎢- Were there any scenes you were nervous about? For audience reception or otherwise?
With every single courtroom scene, I was worried that it would be super boring or wouldn’t live up to the games or that all of the arguments I used would be Wrong and Bad? also this isn’t unique to currents but every single time I write a kissing scene I worry that it’s going to be bad
☀️- Was there symbolism/motifs you worked in?
A little? If anything, I was trying to emphasize the symbolism and Themes that I felt the canon games after AA4 didn’t utilize at all--like, I deliberately used Apollo flying across the ocean after hearing about Klavier as a parallel with Edgeworth flying across the ocean when he heard something happened with Phoenix, and obviously the “POV defense attorney defends rival prosecutor” is a deliberate parallel with 1-4. I guess Klavier’s hair might be a bit of a motif but that’s mostly because I think it’s pretty and less of a deliberate choice lmao
📜-Do you want to write something like this again in the future?
Depends! I would maybe write another casefic if I had a really good concept for one, sometime In The Future (because they are So Annoying to plan)--but as for multichaptered fics, I definitely want to write another one sometime. I just need to have a Good Idea and the motivation to stick with it--currents was written mainly out of spite at the dropped plot threads from AA4 and my determination to resolve a bunch of them and also further my Klapollo Agenda.
✏️-Would you go back and change anything if you could?
At the moment, I don’t think I would--but if you asked me again in a year or so, I probably would change things. I still want to write a series of oneshots in the currents universe--stuff focusing on characters we didn’t see enough of, like Trucy and Phoenix; and Kristoph pre-fic; and Phoenix and Miles; and Klavier and Apollo after everything
⭐- What’s a scene/paragraph you’re proud of?
“We can’t dwell too much on that part. But one more thing—if they planted the nail polish back then, and the powder in the mortar and pestle—how could they be sure you wouldn’t...accidentally…”
Apollo trails off, but they both know how that sentence ends. Klavier shudders.
“I almost never use that thing, anyway—it was a housewarming gift, and I’ve only ever been ambitious enough to grind my own spices about twice. Otherwise, it’s just easier to use the stuff in jars. I guess they must have known that, somehow? Either that, or...it didn’t matter if…”
“So, they’re someone who either wanted you to be found guilty for a murder you didn’t commit, or didn’t mind if you were poisoned by accident—and who probably works for that dogsitting company,” Apollo murmurs, pulling out his planner and jotting down a few notes. On the other side of the glass, Klavier sighs, tilting his head so that his fringe obscures his eyes.
“I wonder...if they’d gotten me, accidentally...would they still have killed Kris? Or would they have been satisfied with just me?”
The question is nearly inaudible, but Apollo looks up sharply, staring at Klavier.
“You think they killed him just because...it would hurt you?”
Klavier shifts, meeting Apollo’s eyes. “What would be the point, otherwise? Vengeance? Apollo, who’s left alive that would need to enact revenge on him? He was already on death row—what does this accomplish, besides hurting me?”
As much as Apollo tries, he can’t come up with an answer.
I don’t know if I can think of too many specific scenes I’m proud of--but I really do like this one, because I think it shows Apollo’s pragmatic side--trying to solve the murder mystery, pushing his emotions aside when he can--while illustrating Klavier’s attitude of “usually I would brush this off but we both know this premise is a little wonky and this isn’t adding up.”
...that might not have made sense, I’m not always the best at analyzing my own writing. I just throw words at the page and what happens, happens.
📣-What was the best piece of encouragement you got?
It’s cheesy, but everyone who commented on each chapter was an invaluable source of encouragement? like, the absolute best feeling in the world was posting a new chapter and then seeing all the comment notifications come in, and spending the rest of the day replying. I’d written 6 chapters before I posted the prologue, but having people give me their reactions to each chapter really was the most important thing that made me keep going <3
🔦-Did you learn anything while writing it? About yourself? Writing?
I learned a lot about How To Write A Murder-Mystery--first and foremost, that it involves so much planning. And I maybe had to spoil the ending of AA6 entirely for myself--fun fact, I still haven’t finished the game, I’m stuck on Trial Day 1 of the Maya case (because I’m Tired, okay?). About writing and myself--I learned that I definitely need a deadline, and that using external “word count goal” tools is pretty essential for me if I want to write anything longer than a oneshot.
For The Scurvy Fic:
💡-What was the motivation behind the story?
okay SO. There was a conversation going on in a Klapollo discord server. Somehow we ended up talking about Klavier and/or Apollo being cheapskates. I think I mentioned something about Klavier surviving entirely on ramen noodles because they’re cheap? and then it devolved into a conversation about how they’d totally get scurvy if they did that. And I started thinking about how Klavier and Apollo are inherently pretty competitive, and how they’d totally just get into a stupid bet and be so stubborn that they wouldn’t back down, because they have to Prove A Point, even if they get scurvy from their awful diet of Whatever’s The Cheapest. And then...Scurvy Fic Happened. (along with the Other scurvy fics, because there’s Three of them!! I was just the only person who went with the obvious title).
Thank you for the ask!! Hope this was...enlightening??

Note
(1) Hi loftec! i have a quick question (you don't have to answer if you don't want to!) - i'm working on my fic right now (probably never gonna post it tho, my writing is really bad, but anyway), in NTW ian has an EX (Jace? i think?) and if i'm correct he is a lot older than ian (i don't know if you ever gave us jace's age but i remember him being a lot older for some reason - maybe because mickey called him a creep and pedo at least 5 times 🤣 and it just stuck), anyway, my question is:
(2) do you have any "theory" of why ian dates older guys, and by older i mean OLDER (first Kash, then Ned), in fics he also dates "grandpas" - as mickey would call them 😂 (+ is Jace a "grandpa"? i was thinking all this time that he is, but now i'm not so sure 🤔🤔)
Hello friend!
First of all, I could talk for ages about how I think good/bad is a completely irrelevant metric when it comes to fic. I love writing fic and I mostly love the thing I am writing – I’m excited to develop the idea, to shape it into something that can be shared, and then to share it... but I still (often!) think my writing is bad. I just want to tell you that it does not matter if you feel like your writing is bad, I swear to you it isn’t. It’s maybe a first draft that you can work on, it’s maybe an idea that you can share with another person for feedback, maybe it’s just what’s on your mind right now and it is what it is and doesn’t have to be more than that.
I think one of the most wonderful things inherent in the way we publish and consume fic, is that quality is subjective to the point of irrelevant. You are the only part of your fic that really matters; if you want to write it, write it. If you want to post it, post it.
Posting fic is a really scary thing before you’ve tried it. Then it becomes the most exhilarating thing, while still also remaining very scary. And maybe it’s not for you, you really do not need to post your fic in order for it to have value. You’re writing! That’s fantastic! But if you find yourself excited for your fic even while you still feel like it might be bad, I want you to know you’re not alone in that feeling. And the feeling might be there for a reason, but don’t let it be there just to stop you.
Oh wow, I’ve gone off on a tangent, but! If you want me to ramble on about good vs bad, give some hot tips on posting fic, or want another pep talk, let me know. It is one of my most favourite things to talk about.
Onto the actual ask:
This is a very interesting question and something I know I thought about a lot a few years ago when I started writing about Ian. I will try to put words to these thoughts, with a couple of caveats. Under the cut!
Most of my characterisation is based on seasons 1-5, I have kept up to date with Ian and Mickey in the later seasons, but only by reading recaps and not by watching the show myself, so... yeah, I suppose there could be more insight there, especially maybe with Caleb and perhaps also Trevor, who both were to various extents positioned to “teach” Ian something; about relationships or about his community... but like I said, I never actually watched those seasons, so I’m not really qualified to speak on that.
So!
In NTW, Jace is definitely a lot older than Ian. When they met, Ian was in his early twenties and Jace was closer to forty, and also an authority figure.
I think an important thing to keep in mind is that we’ve only met Jace from Mickey’s unflattering POV, so far, and we only know about his and Ian’s relationship through what little Ian is willing to tell us. And Ian is maybe not the most reliable narrator when it comes to his past relationships, as I daresay most of us aren’t. Jace most certainly did a lot wrong when they were together, and he was twice Ian’s age and his teacher (which I suppose doesn’t have to mean anything bad, but you know... I don’t understand the draw of that kind of dynamic), but they were together for a reason, at some point. People are rarely all bad, or entirely to blame. Ian was drawn to Jace for many different reasons, and went back to him more than once for those same reasons. Tellingly, I’d wager that the age difference and the wonky power dynamic were not part of the reasons why Ian eventually ended it with Jace.
And the fact that he didn’t find an issue with being with someone twice his age, probably has a lot to do with Kash.
When Ian was with Kash, I think he thought they were equals. That he thought he was an adult because his parents had left him and his siblings to take care of themselves, to provide for their family. Ian worked and had a plan for the future, he had responsibilities and dealt with them. He was mature. (And as far as we know, he also topped in his sexual relationship with Kash, which I imagine a 14 year old guy could think of as definitive proof that other people don’t know what they’re talking about when/if they question his (fully illegal) relationship with a grown-ass adult man.) Before he hooks up with Mickey, we never see Ian interested in guys his own age. We see him have sex with one or two, but never anything beyond that. At this point – when Ian is still a teenager, convinced that he’s a grown-up – I imagine that he is looking for partners who make him feel like an adult, because this is what he thinks he is, who he thinks he has to be.
Roughly the same could probably be said about Ned, although at that point Ian has experienced something else with Mickey, and maybe also wants to go back to being with someone more “secure” and more “mature”. He does a shit job trying to find it with Ned, but Ned is also 99% there for his “must make Mickey jealous somehow” ploy, so I don’t know how much we can extrapolate from his “relationship” with that guy (as you might be able to tell, I don’t like that storyline very much, to the point where I have written Ned out entirely from NTW lol).
Ahh this got long and I don’t know if it’s at all interesting or answers your question! Hope there’s something there, let me know if there’s anything that didn’t make sense, and I’m sure I can be convinced to ramble on for a bit longer.
Thanks for asking! <3
