Couple's (questionable) Halloween Costumes ft. Tokyo Debunker

I just got back from an event and had some thoughts idk. This is not in any particular order, just whoever came to mind first.

Towa- Bee and Beekeeper. His chibi is already a bee, he'd probably find it cute to see you dressed up like one too. Haru is the one who suggests his jumpsuit already looks a bit like a beekeeper suit, all he'd need to do is get a hat. Towa loves romance, so he'd probably be one of the only ghouls actually interested in dressing up with you 10/10.

Sho- Mario and Princess Peach, except he's the princess because he made the mistake of telling you that Leo always makes him be the girl. You really want to play this game, senpai? Fine. He'll hate every second of it but it is just the littlest bit worth it to see you squirm at how good he looks in a dress. Somewhat. He'd rather make you squirm someway else ???/10

Luca- Jedidiah and Octavius (from night at the museum). He sort of ruins it because he doesn't understand the reference and spends the night talking at length about Roman history. Which is nice if you are into that but extremely boring if not 6/10.

Kaito- Ketchup and Mustard. He also sort of ruins it; doing something this classically coupley with you makes him delirious with happiness and he has a stroke before you can make your way to the party. Salvages the night by baking Halloween themed cupcakes, you have a nice little date decorating them and no one has to see you two embarrass yourselves in public 7/10.

Haru- Cow and the Moon. He... does not have the best fashion sense if his cards are anything to go by, and hey this cow costume he got for (insert total rip off price here) will totally help him promote the back to nature tour! You dressing up as the moon was supposed to be a cute gimmick thing to play off the old nursery rhyme, he wasn't expecting you to put together such an ethereal outfit. Completely forgets about promoting the tour in favor of being cute with you all night, he's totally willing to do this again 9/10 (don't let him choose the costumes next time).

Rui- Moth and Lamp. He wants to do Gomez and Morticia, but the torture of not being able to touch you is already too much to bear as is, he isn't about to make it worse for himself. This way he can still be free to tend bar and make a bunch of cheesy "jokes" about you being the light of his life. Moths sort of fit the Obscuary theme anyway so it's a perfect costume, 10/10.

Haku- Howl and Sofie. He wants a costume that will give him an excuse to flirt with you and will make it very very clear just who you are leaving this party with. Haku probably thinks he'd look really good in Howl's outfit and you know what? He's right. Just remember to take him seriously when he offers his help removing your clothes this time, inspector 10/10.

Taiga- Ghostface. For exactly the reasons you think kitten don't even bother picking out a costume [redacted]/10.

Having a BAU girls night out but with Luke tagging along for scary dog privileges (even though you could very well do anything you want yourself bc you're a literal federal agent)

girl i LOVE this idea, like luke would fucking LOVE to be the scary dog on a night-out, intimidating anyone in sight who was being creepy or weird. here's how a typical night with the women of the BAU (+luke) would probably go.

so you all get to the bar as soon as you're off work, sometimes in uniform (which is literally just formal wear), sometimes you get a chance to change into something more comfortable but sluttish for the bar, really depends on the day

either way, luke is there and he sometimes wonders how he gets himself into these situations because being surrounded by his absolutely gorgeous drunk coworkers is just something he never really expects but he secretly loves it

you and the girlies all do rounds of drinks, cocktails for garcia, rum and coke (or whiskey) for emily, jj gets like either aperol spritzer, cocktails or like vodka with a mixer (orange or pineapple or cranberry juice) and tara gets either whiskey, like emily, or she gets like coke/lemonade with vodka, you get whatever your favourite is on the night and you obviously are all drinking

luke probably gets like a beer but doesn't tend to get too drunk unless it's a whole team outing (including matt, reid and rossi) so he has a few beers

the ladies quickly get smashed which leads to dancing, which leads to reader being incredibly touchy with everyone but especially luke which leads to him getting dragged to dance

he loves dancing (even if he'd never admit it) and he loved seeing you so care-free on a night out

the dancing then leads to men approaching the other girlies and jj is probably the first to make her way towards you and luke when men start being weird

this is quickly followed by garcia

they are both strong independent women, don't get me wrong, but jj especially avoids conflict when she can, so you will drag her into you and dance with her and with luke

the GLARE the luke gives the weird men would be enough for them to give up or scuttle off

jj is always thankful for luke in the mornings and always tells him as much, garcia is a little more on-and-off about it

you almost never leave luke's side so you're usually clear of the creeps

now as for the other girls, whenever weird men come around, tara and emily are the first willing to start a fight

this leads to luke diffusing which only pisses them off more and you or jj or garcia step in to diffuse further, the men always back off when another man comes and it makes emily and tara mad (so real)

but after that hiccup in the night, it usually goes back to normal, dancing, singing, drinking until you can barely walk because a release like a drunken night is seriously needed after a long day chasing criminals

also emily will occasionally spend an entire night drinking wine but it makes her a little too silly and gives her a raging headache in the morning so she generally avoids it

but all-in-all, everyone loves when luke comes and are thankful for the scary dog vibes that he gives off to people who are being weird

obviously, they wish things were different and also can and do take care of themselves whenever they got out alone but luke being there tends to make everyone feel safer

luke also just loves having free rein and permission to glare down any man who even dares go near any of the BAU women if they don't want it

he is aware that everyone can take care of themselves but after dealing with weird men who make him feel sick to his stomach most days, being able to protect his friends from those same kind of men does make him feel a little better

you also love when he protects everyone, you just think it's so sweet and you adore him for it

which is just another reason that you fall for him

i think maybe i’m naive but i don’t understand why you seem to think all men are terrible? like ofc there are men who are violent and are predators. probably many more than i am aware of. i know most violence is committed by men. and if you’ve had traumatic experiences i appreciate you would feel mistrustful.

but I think of the men i know and they at least SEEM nice? i’ve never heard them say anything disrespectful or sexist. the only comment my male colleague has ever made is that he thinks women tend to judge themselves more harshly than men judge themselves. they’ve only ever been supportive to me and as far as i’m aware all my female colleagues get on well with them.

i think of my brother who is devoted to his wife and i know i don’t see what happens behind closed doors but I’ve only ever seen him treat her with respect & she said her favourite thing about him is how gentle he is

I’ve had negative experiences with men too. And I’ve had other men stand up for me when that’s happened. Men who have walked me home to make sure I get home safe

my job is primarily supporting vulnerable men and I’d say the majority of them are respectful towards me. I have had some negative experiences but mostly I’ve had no issues. the men often talk to me about the pressure to “be strong” and not to show emotion. when they talk about their partners, it’s almost always in a positive way. i do sometimes get called “love” or names like that which ig could be seen as condescending but i don’t think it’s done deliberately. and they do listen to me & take my advice seriously.

am i just very lucky / sheltered? i think i probably am. i hear about domestic violence statistics and it’s shocking. it’s hard for me to imagine anyone I know being a perpetrator. like my neighbour who spends his time making fairy gardens for his granddaughter i just can’t see as being any kind of predator

Have you had many close relationships with men? I didnt realize it until spending a lot of time cohabitating with different men. Until I did I always thought man hating must surely not be rational. Men all seem so nice until you get to know them intimately.

I do not think the majority of men are plotting and scheming. They are just thoughtless in certain ways and this makes them very dangerous. They do not critically analyze power dynamics in society because they benefit from them and dont suffer as a result of them. They have less empathy because they are less often victims and don't see themselves in victims. Therefore even if their entire directive is "i wanna be a good person", depending on the society they're born in they might unquestioningly accept that rape is ok, that rocking the boat to make things fairer or safer for women is wrong, etc. -Men commit 90-99 percent of violent and sexual crimes -There are entire countries where women are in a dark surveillance state and not allowed to do anything alone, access healthcare and are considered property or not allowed access to education. -In america, women couldnt even have bank accounts until the 70s. Look up anti suffragette propaganda posters and learn about how womens rights were won. It was bloody and almost no men helped us. It has not been long that we've had these rights and they could be lost again. That grandpa lived when women did not have rights. Have you questioned how he felt about them gaining rights? -21-24 percent of all girls in the world are married off as children, child marriage is not entirely illegal in america even -Most if not all religions basically preach that a womans duty is to serve men, this has not left its followers opinions of women unaffected. -More women have been killed by their male partners than men have died in wars -All these things are not just run by perpetrators, but also by the complacency of non perpetrating men who are unquestioning and not bothered enough to do anything. Men arent bad because of socialization. Unanimously across the planet men have enslaved women because they just naturally want to/dont feel bad when it happens. In the absence of society men rape and kill much more because theyre just Like That. i want to end all power dynamics. i want men to no longer be able to enslave women and i want neither men nor women to be able to enslave children and animals. i dont want any wealthy people capable of enslaving poor people. i dont want anyone of any race able to harm members of another race.

in general men see the things needed to end the power dynamic between men and women as an attack on their rights. Many of them in fact believe they have a right to womens lives and labor completely. They will always impede our progress because they just dont care and like things the way they are. Its the same reason why people wont go vegan. At some point, you have to become right pissed at everyone who is not helping because if you arent opposing something you are allowing it to happen. Ignorance is not an excuse. Power dynamics must be opposed. This is why i am angry at men, the obscenely rich, animal exploiters/eaters, sex buyers, and even willing/non coerced parents, as im an antinatalist.

This is no where near all the reasons but here is kind of a general breakdown of why i talk about men the way i do.

BLOGTOBER 10/3-10/4/2024: BOWLING 4 EVA and SAID OF A DEER THAT SHEDS ITS ANTLERS

Last week I hosted two nights of shorts from the Final Girls Berlin Film Festival. It was a lot of fun, but I have to confess that I'm usually a little bit shorts-averse; I just feel like they tend to come out like little cocktail jokes with a windup and punchline, which can run the additional risk of being too messagey. A story needs more than 30 minutes to fully develop, and I think your uh Fibonacci sequence or whatever needs to run longer than that to feel seriously engrossed. Obviously I don't think there shouldn't be any shorts. THE BABADOOK started out as a short, SMILE started out as a short, among other things I really like--and I did see some things this year that gave me that feeling of a preamble to something bigger.

BOWLING 4 EVA is a surreal black comedy that I could not stop thinking about after I saw it. Filmmaker Aelfie Oudghiri packs a lot of interest into this fifteen minute movie about a suicidal teenager whose family shuttles her between boarding school and a psychiatrist's office to try to fix her. She gets prescribed a "loneliness inhibitor" that produces hallucinations, specifically attached to the only thing that gives her life any meaning--bowling.

The gruesome and weirdly horny climactic dream sequence in which she confronts an anthropomorphic bowling ball that embodies all of her dark thoughts is really great, but I loved the exploration of how the protagonist's alienation and affects her family life, her social life, and her online life. I saw it as a sharp refutation of the idea of the "male loneliness epidemic", which concept somehow suggests that only men and boys experience sexual frustration that can compound mental health issues. There's also an interesting layer about the specific culture of rich Koreans living in Queens, but I think you'd need a feature film to work all that out. Maybe they'll make one, but meanwhile I have discovered that you can watch this cool movie online! Hooray:

Probably my favorite film from the second night was a Belgian movie called SAID OF A DEER THAT SHEDS ITS ANTLERS. I'm noticing a new trend in horror where in recent years the focus has been on grief, and now it's shifting toward elder care. There were a few examples just in this program, including the award-winning OLGA'S EYES and the mysterious SPOOR, which is one of the strangest things I've seen in a while, but Salomé Crickx's SAID OF A DEER looks at the subject through an amusing metaphorical lens.

The film takes place on the day of ritual culling of elder adults in a rural community (although the practice could be universal, who knows!). While most of the young adults celebrate killing their parents with a sweaty basement kegger, one woman deals with the consequences of giving her mischievous folks a few more hours on earth. The point of the film comes into focus when some of the young people playfully gang up on a peer who is approaching middle age without kids or marriage prospects, meaning there is no one to kill him when it's time; this seems to carry the same stigma as having to go into a nursing home without enough family to look after you. It's a smart, funny film, and you should see if it you can! I won't be surprised if Crickx turns out a feature in the near future.

Hi I would like a ship request for tbb please :) I'm a 22 year old girl I have shoulder length dark brown hair with red highlights. How I dress is either kind of a basic androgynous look like T-shirt/sweatshirt and jeans or kinda sexually charged feminine look, when I'm in the mood to put in an effort with my outfit I typically like to feel sexy. Lots of really tight tank tops and crop tops. Most of my wardrobe is black, I'm a tiny goth at heart but I wouldn't say it reflects so much on my outer appearance as it once did.

I love watching movies + TV shows, it's probably my favorite pastime I rewatch stuff a lot (like I got paid for rewatching Grey's Anatomy or any marvel movie with Bucky Barnes and I could've probably bought a house by now). Hugely into all the nerdy franchises, super heroes, Star Wars, Star Trek, Doctor Who. I love to bake and paint in my free time. I like to read but don't get to as often as I would like because I need utter silence to concentrate or my ears like to hyper focus on literally anything else that is around me 🙃. I'm very soft spoken in group settings, I find it difficult to get in my piece, I get cutoff most times so I tend to just listen to conversations. I do like to be a person that others think they come too if they need to rant about anything but I also get wildly uncomfortable when people cry around me, unless we are like super super close. I do have a bit of maternal instinct and like babies and younger children but do not mistake that for me wanting my own kids. Not gonna happen. Animals only please lol. I like to be helpful were I can but please also be hyper specific with your needs because I will stress about if what I am doing is right or even at all helpful. I love to give gifts. Giving someone something special or thoughtful and seeing them light up brings me the most joy in life. Even if it's as small as like a cupcake if they get any kind of joy out of it I feel that joy too and it makes my heart happy. I can be very snippy and sarcastic especially if you are acting the same way with me. I'll end that here, thank you for your time. ❤️

Tech!

As I'm sure we've all figured out by now, Tech is a Nerd(tm), so being able to learn about your interests fascinates him. He never got to watch movies or TV shows on Kamino; if he wanted to hear a story, he either had to hear someone else tell it or he had to make it up himself. However, now that he's with you, there are so many things for him to watch!! And to make it better, watching new things allows him to spend time with you? Win-win! Just be aware, he will multitask while watching; he just needs to do something with his hands at all times.

Baking with Tech is something you both enjoy as well. Tech much prefers baking over cooking because it's much more exact, and the directions tend to be a lot more specific- something he does well with. He researches new recipes that he wants to make with you, looking up multiple versions to see what techniques work the best, which ingredients to use, etc. so that the final product is the best it can be. Sometimes Tech takes baking a little too seriously, so you might have to reign him in a little bit and remind him that this is a relaxing activity.

When in social situations, you and he tend to stay close together. Depending on the topic, Tech most likely won't have a ton to offer up, so you and he end up sitting and listening to others talk, sitting there and enjoying the company. Sometimes Crosshair will join you, but other times, he needs space to be grumpy. However, whenever you eant to say something and can't seem to get a word in, Tech will make the others stop so that you can talk. It was a little embarrassing at first, but it soon became a habit, because if anything, Tech wants to make sure his loved one is able to express themself fully.

I’m assuming this means published fics, so! I Was Nothing But A Kid Who Couldn’t Understand!!! THAT ONE!!! I’m actually working on a sequel! Well. I’ve. been working on it. for like… over a year. ish.

The problem is that the sequel is multi-chaptered, and I am not too great with multi-chapter fics. I’ve written four chapters so far (which… well dang!! that’s a little impressive!!) but the plan is for there to be twelve chapters + an epilogue. I’ve been wanting to actually sit down and come up with an outline for the rest of the fic, but I keep forgetting to do that. I do know just how it’s gonna end though!!

Gosh Kidbur is so freakin fun to write. I’m not even kidding he is literally so so so much fun. He’s such a great little guy. Oh my gosh.

do you ever worry about public reaction to what you’re writing? how do you get past that?

Yes! Yes I definitely do! Mostly with Ghostbur fics, quite honestly; he’s not nearly as popular as Wilbur or Tommy or Phil (<—other dudes I’ve written about) and my A03 stats… definitely make that clear lol. I try not to mind it, and most of the time I really don’t care, but it… is kinda discouraging. Y’know? The ghost deserves so so so so so so so soooooo many fans I’m not even kidding. Why must he be so very discarded by fandom :(((

Also lately I’ve been a bit nervous about me branching out & writing for The Wingfeather Saga. I know that most of the people subscribed to me on A03 did not subscribe to me for Wingfeather fics, and I just don’t want them to think I’ve moved on from the fandom—because I have not!!! More Dream SMP fics will show up, hopefully soon!!

I haven’t posted any Wilbur fics since the whole situation occurred, and I honestly haven’t been too worried about that at all, but… eh. I’ll probably feel on-edge when I post a Wilbur fic next. I know that some people have been weird about the whole thing.

How have I gotten past these things? Ah… I haven’t 😅 I just try not to think about it all too much, which does help!

how do you recharge when you’re not feeling creative?

Focus on other things besides writing!!! I have learned the hard way that trying to make myself write has made me avoid/dislike anything that I end up writing. Which sucks on a number of levels.

I read, do music, spend time on tumblr, chat with friends, so on. I take a break from writing until the Motivation returns. It tends to work out.

That being said, I’ve been in writers block for probably a month now, and at this point I just miss writing. I really do.

your favorite part of the writing process

Being able to see every little scene of my stories inside my mind :) It’s like a movie but Better because they have GHOSTBUR IN THEM!!! AS WELL AS OTHER THINGS THAT I QUITE LIKE!!!

Writing is a very… I guess visual thing for me, because I really do imagine & see everything in my mind, playing out like a movie. Being able to run away from this world for a little while and spend time in so so many different worlds, filled with different people and scenery and weather and sounds and sensations and emotions… it’s amazing. It’s so amazing, and being able to experience that every time I write something is incredible.

share a fic you’re especially proud of

Better Than a Painting, Because Paintings Aren’t Perfect. This is one of the (relatively few) stories of mine that I have quite positive feelings over, even after months or years of it being published. With most of my stories I just post them and then don’t look at them again, and for others I post them and then grow negative feelings towards them. But for this fic, along with a handful of others, I still… like them. A lot :)

1. Talk about the first time you and your f/o met. How was it like?

satoru and i met as students at jujutsu high. he was a third year while i was a first year, so we weren't around each other as much as if we would've been had we been in the same class, and he of course had his own little cohort of closer friends with suguru and shoko. but there were definitely times when we would interact and they were positive enough for me to develop a little crush on him.

i remember being a little shaken up when i first saw him. those eyes, that hair, and his overall presence was striking and a little overwhelming. i was wary of his cocky and playful energy at first, afraid it would be consuming and make me uncomfortable, especially since i was a fresh and nervous first year. but nothing particularly negative was ever directed my way aside from the occasional friendly tease, so i was pleasantly surprised. he was more so preoccupied with himself and his friends to make a big fuss over me, so i was able to safely observe from afar.

2. How long did it take for you and your f/o to gain feelings for each other? Was it fast or did the feelings grow slowly? Who was the first to get romantic feelings?

feelings between jean and i grew over time! we started out as just classmates who never really knew much about each other but were stuck together for projects/tutoring (in my mind we met in college lmao), and things developed from there. we didn't exactly run in the same circles of people nor did we seem to have much in common at first, but we eventually became friends after spending more and more time together.

i'd say i was probably the first one to catch feelings. i tend to crush pretty hard/get sexually attracted easily but i don't think i took it too seriously because i figured once class stuff was done we'd go back to not really talking to each other. however, it didn't end up that way because jean was actually developing feelings as well over time!!

6. How did you react once you realized you had feelings for them? Were you calm, stressed, in denial, etc.? Vice versa?

since i harbored a crush for a good while, i was pretty stressed about it. i didn't know if he was the right type of guy for me to have any sort of feelings for and i was under the assumption that it wouldn't be reciprocated at any point, so why get too deep?

i still held onto hope as we became closer friends, but it sucked knowing he casually talked to other girls from time to time, because, well... that just seemed to prove that he had no interest in me outside of a platonic relationship. but that wasn't true, he just wasn't really aware of his feelings and stuck to situations that made him feel less vulnerable. so he was subconsciously dealing with stuff which was stressful in and of itself, but once we both finally had a mutual moment of realization, it was very freeing.

Do you know anyone who has ten cats? My sister's parents-in-law own WELL over ten, they have an infestation inside and outside.

Have you ever had a cat? I grew up with cats; as a matter of fact, we also had an outdoor infestation growing up. I hope that doesn't make anyone think ill of my parents, obviously that is a very serious issue that I now have very strong feelings about, but my mom didn't want to devastate us kids by taking them away. This eventually did happen when I was a teenager, and it was one of the most heartbreaking things that has happened to me. The cats were there one school morning, gone when I got home because our neighbor complained. It's because of this history that I try to treat Ashley's MIL with understanding and compassion regarding this topic, but it's hard when the cats are suffering, too.

Have you ever had a dog? Yes, we've had a good few. We have a rescued chihuahua now, she's a sweetheart.

Okay, I was HIGHLY tempted to put Annabeth here instead (bc of the obvious sustainable design architecture connection) but I think Rachel is the funnier option of the two bc of my history with it. If you were here about two years ago, you might recall the initial Rachel Elizabeth Dare comparisons (referenced here and here). It is my great pleasure to inform you all that I have firmly crossed over from Blonde territory into Redhead territory due to the passage of time and the insanity that is hair color genetics. My hair also gets puffy and curly now, just because it really wanted to commit to the Rachel Elizabeth Dare bit. I don't know how this happened, honestly, but strangers now refer to me as a redhead, and I'm fairly certain it is through the power of manifestation of all the mutuals who called me Rachel. Well done friends. You are all magical beings who have cast Become Rachel spell on me so consistently and for so long that it WORKED. I was always decently Artsy + Environmental Justice-y, but I am especially so nowadays, mostly by virtue of being involved directly in both fields as a sustainable design, marine science, and bio-systems design student. There’s just a lot of environmental stuff happening in those, but it all has a distinct artsy side to it bc it’s heavily design oriented. So. Yea. Mark Watney

This one is also admittedly here partially for the joke. If you’ve been following me for awhile, you might have noticed that I seem to be allergic to a lot of things. Like way too many things. A concerning amount of things. But fret not friends, because I, like Mark Watney, have the ever reliable Irish staple that is the potato to keep me from dying! For whatever reason this food has been consistently pretty kind to me, even when everything else tries to kill me a little bit. Which is great! And just,, really weird. Anyway Mark and I both seem to inhabit a world that constantly poses threats, a world that no one else experiences but that they still try to understand and support us through. And we don’t have a lot of food options, but we both have the potato. Blessed be la pomme de terre. Honestly any character in a hostile environment is one I immediately and irrevocably pack-bond with (see also: Katniss Everdeen, Robyn Davidson (a real person!!), Pi Patel, Steven Callahan. (also a real person!!)…), but I ESPECIALLY identify with Mark for his commitment to levity. I love that he is a relentless problem-solving optimist, quick with a joke, but also expressive of other emotions too. My identification with Mark is more,, aspirational than of Rachel. Mark is me at my best, and I hope to become more like him with time. Also, he’s into botany and mechanical engineering which is just the COOLEST. I love both of those things but haven’t made a career out of them (though I’m not ruling it out!).

Ariadne from Inception

I tried to pick characters that I haven’t already expressed an instant pack bond with, so here I am with my last choice: Ariadne. First I would like to plainly state that Ariadne is, like, way cooler and more fashionable than me. This comparison will not be one of THOSE metrics bc she and I are just,, very different in those regards. HOWEVER, these other two characters don’t quite carry themselves with the seriousness that (I have been repeatedly told) I do. Ariadne is a dreamer, a visual thinker, and a creative soul, but she’s rather less sanguine about it than Rachel or Mark. She knows her goals, she sets her sites on them, and she pursues them without hesitation but WITH consideration for how her actions might ripple out and effect change. I really admire her deep consideration of things, her ability to think abstractly, and her willingness to just Go Try New Things. I might not be quite on her level in those regards, but I’ve been told I SEEM like her at least, and I do actively try to be embody those traits. So, like Mark, her character is one I generally aspire towards. On the flip side though, Ariadne can get a little lost in her head and can become pulled into things that she’d probably be better off leaving alone, which I completely understand and relate to. Curiosity and cats and whatnot. Also, she’s an architect, so there’s that. Similar training!

He would be the really, if not the most worried of them all.

He still has trouble accepting the death of Nora and his family, but since he met you, things have gotten easier for him

He couldnt bear losing you too.

He would lose himself while trying to find your killer.

The moment that he is informed by Sage, or Skye that you are unconscious, he leaves everything he was doing and rushes to you.

After that incident, expect to have cameras all over your room.

He also requests to be in every mission that you are put in, so he could watch over you silently with his Operator.

"I couldnt imagine losing you, you nearly scared me into death. Dont ever do that again, please." He unhooked the straps of his mask, and hugs you tightly while covering his face in the crook of your neck. When you are allowed to go back into your bedroom, expect him to sleep with you, he also set up his tripwires around your bedroom.

The morning after, theres fresh Moroccan tea waiting for you on the nightstand and a breakfast he prepared, well tried.

Killjoy

Poor girl would sweat bullets worrying for you, she will set up her alarm bot in your rooms door just to be cautious.

When she heard you were heavily injured, she was stressing out, hoping you were okay.

The next morning, she was already there when you woke up and bombs you with questions of what happened.

Would also try her best to take care of you, but lets be honest, she cant even take care of herself medical wise. Always forgets to take medications because she is cought up working late.

You would have to end up telling her to go to sleep because she works extra hard on her robots to make you safer on the battlefiels.

If you are on a mission she is not assigned in, she would slip one of her robots in your bag before youre flying off.

"Mein gott, please be safer! You gave me a heart attack, i was so worried...Why didnt you call for backup? Wait, were the mics not working?! I have to work on them more, this wouldnt have happened..!" She starty blaming herself for letting you get hurt, even if she wasnt there, if the earpieces wouldve worked, maybe Phoenix or Jett couldve helped you.

She hugs you tightly and wraps her puffy jacket over the both of you. After that day, she spends entire nights trying to create better pieces.

Expect to have her worrying the shit out of herself for the next few missions and you have to calm her down.

Yoru

He fights back the urge to teleport to you that instant, but he will never admit that.

Probably the most grumpiest about it of them all.

When he hears that youve been seriously hurt, he gets all moody and will snap at anyone who tries to assure him that youll be fine.

He goes and sends you gifts while you are unconscious, but denied everything if you ask him about it.

He always tags along in your missions, and always have a teleport ready by your side.

If it was his other self who have injured you, he would distance himself, worried that you are now scared of him.

He would blame himself for not being there but he wouldnt ever let the egoistical facade crumble infront of everyone.

"How could you end up in that situation dumbass?! I always told you to call me if youre in trouble! Tch, cant you be more carefull?!" He scolds you a lot after that but he truly cares about you, he would tell the healer who tends you, to be extra watchfull for any minor injuries too. He would he more grumpy for a few days but return to his normal self when you are all healed. Probably will tell you to back off for the next mission because youre too weak, but in reality he is just worried that your wounds may open up.

Sun w/ Venus Romantic Types

With most of her friends being absent, Y/n spends part of the school day alone. Stiles finally admits to his feelings. 

“Hey, birthday girl!” You beamed, walking up to Allison.

“Shh!” She widened her eyes. “I really don’t want people to know! But uh, thank you.”

“You’re welcome?” You asked, with a smile on your face no less. “So got any plans tonight? I’m free if you wanna throw a little get together. You know, food, cake, booze, whatever you’d like!”

“Oh, um,” She laughed nervously. “I think I have to spend it with my family since my aunt is in town unfortunately. But maybe this weekend?”

“Sure thing! Maybe a sleep over at my place or Lydia’s?” You suggested. “That is, if she ever answers my texts. Have you seen her this morning?”

“Actually, no,” She furrowed her brows. “That’s weird. I wonder if she’s okay.”

“I’ll drop by her place after school if I still haven’t heard anything,” You readjusted your backpack, getting ready to walk off to your locker. “Also, I feel like I should let you know that she decorated your locker with like a shit ton of balloons yesterday. Had I known you didn’t want to make any fuss, I would’ve stopped her. I’m sorry-“

“No, no, it’s okay!” She sighed before pulling you into a hug. “Thanks for the heads up. And for the happy birthday. You’re seriously such a good friend.”

“Oh god..” You chuckled nervously, earning a confused look from your friend. “You should probably know that I told-“

“Hey, today’s your birthday?” Scott practically skipped up to the two of you, making you both laugh. “What?”

“Nothing, lover boy,” You pat his shoulder once before walking off. “See you guys in class!”

After a quick trip to your locker, you took your seat only to notice that the vast majority of your friends were gone. It made you wonder if there was something you didn’t know about so you shot your best friend a text.

You continued on with your day, weirdly enjoying the silence. You managed to focus on the lectures and take notes without a lick of gossip or wolf drama. It was nice to feel like a normal high school student for once, but you also missed having your loud friends around. You closed your locker between classes to see Stiles standing behind it, giving you an angry glare.

“Is everyone just avoiding me today?” He asked, annoyed.

“I was just starting to wonder the same thing actually,” You laughed. “Where is everyone? Did I not get the memo for sophomore ditch day or something?”

“Wait, so you haven’t seen Scott either?” He questioned, beginning to walk to your shared chemistry class.

“I haven’t seen Scott, Allison, Lydia, or Jackson today,” You answered.

“Well, I think I know where the last two are,” Stiles began, pulling you aside from the large crowd of people, lowering his voice.. “I was with my dad last night that there was a 1-8-7.”

“A 1-8 what?”

“A murder,” He said, as if it should be obvious. “C’mon, I’ve gone over these codes with you before!”

“I tend to zone out when you do that,” You smirked. Stiles sighed before continuing.

“Okay, so basically, there was a dead body found at Video 2C-“

“Another one?! And wait, the video store?”

“Yes, another one. Yes, the video store. Let me finish!” He waved his arms, making you smile at his goofy way of expressing frustration. “Lydia and Jackson were there! I think they might’ve seen the alpha.”

“No way,” Your eyes widened. “No wonder she hasn’t been answering my texts! She even called me to ask which movie they should rent and then, all of a sudden, radio silence- which is totally weird of her. I had a bad feeling about it.  Any clue as to who was killed?”

“An employee,” Stiles muttered. “Jackson was inside of the store too. Apparently those bookshelf things fell on him.”

“Oh my god!” Your hand flew up to your mouth. “Is he okay?”

“Oh, he’s fine,” He rolled his eyes. “He was standing outside of the store screaming at deputies and then went into privileged psycho mode on my dad.”

“God, what a dick,” You began to walk back towards the classroom. By now most of the students had scattered to their respective classes, making it easy to make it to your next one right on time.

“Right?!” Stiles asked, taking the seat next to you as the bell rung. “God, that kid has such a big stick up his-”

“Ah, Mr. Stilinski, Miss Y/L/N,” Mr. Harris said bitterly. “Nice of you to join us! Perfect timing, actually. Just a second longer and you would’ve been spending the afternoon with me in detention.”

“Sorry, Mr. Harris,” You both mumbled.

“Now, just a friendly reminder-- parent-teacher conferences are tonight! Students below a C-average are required to attend. I won't name you, because the shame and self-disgust should be more than enough punishment,” He spoke to the class, before turning back to the two of you. “… Has anyone seen Scott McCall?”

You both shook your heads and/or shrugged. Stiles took the liberty to begin highlighting all of the important parts of this session’s chapter. The door swung open to reveal a very quiet Jackson. You nudged Stiles and nodded your head over. He looked at you with wide eyes, not daring to speak in such a silent room.

“Hey, Jackson-- if you need to leave early for any reason, you let me know,” Mr. Harris spoke softly, making you roll your eyes at the special treatment. You swore he had a crush on him with the behavior he granted him with. “Everyone, start reading chapter nine… Mr. Stilinski, try putting the highlighter down between paragraphs. It's chemistry, not a coloring book.”

God, you hated him. You both had a better grade than anyone one else sitting in that classroom, yet he still enjoyed making life a living hell for you and your friends. You painfully ignored the comment before doing as told.

“Hey, Danny,” Stiles whispered after a few minutes to the boy sitting in front of you. “Can I ask you a question?”

“No,” He said, obviously annoyed.

“Does anyone know what happened to Jackson and Lydia last night?” Stiles asked anyway.

“.. He wouldn’t tell me,” Danny hesitantly responded.

“But he’s your best friend,” Stiles replied, shocked. You decided to not participate in the inevitable train wreck and take a sip from your water bottle. “Can I ask you another question?”

“Answer’s still no.”

“Do you find me attractive?” Stiles mumbled. You slapped your hand over your mouth, trying not to spew out the liquid in effort of holding in your laughter.

“Is there a problem back there?” Mr. Harris turned around. You all shook your heads before continuing the reading. Stiles looked up and mouthed He’s totally into me, making you purse your lips in fear of making any noise. The smile never left your face for the rest of the hour.

“That’s it, I’m calling him!” Stiles huffed, walking away from your locker. He searched for his best friend’s contact before pressing the call button. You followed him out of the building and listened in to this end of the conversation. “Finally! Have you been getting any of my texts?!”

The call was incredibly short. Stiles groaned as soon as Scott hung up on him. He angrily opened your door and saw your smirking at him.

“Hey, don’t look at me like that!” He pointed. “I have a reason to be mad, okay? He’s like totally blowing me and this situation off to go make out with his girlfriend! It’s like he won’t even hear me out. We’re going to Lydia’s.”

“What?” You asked ask he closed your door, waiting for him to hop in before continuing your thought.. “Stiles, why are we-”

“Because she’s never not at school, Y/N!” He interrupted after he got in the car. His attention to detail made your heart sink a bit. “You have to admit you’re a little worried about her.”

“Uh,” You looked down at your hands, twisting a ring that sat on your middle finger before continuing. “No-Yeah, I mean of course. But I just don’t know how she would feel if we dropped by unannounced.”

“If you feel uncomfortable coming with me, I could drop you off or something,” He offered sweetly, completely oblivious to the way this was all coming off. You stayed silent for a moment, making sure you could not show off any type of negative emotion to the kind boy. “Y/N, you wanna come or-”

“No, no, it’s okay,” You smiled up at him. “Could you actually drop me off? I need to review chapter nine from the chem book. I wasn’t really able to pay attention today.”

“Uh, yeah. Sure, I can do that,” He looked at you with furrowed brows. “You good?”

“Yeah! Just tired,” You responded. “I might take a quick nap too.”

He nodded, feeling as if he should stop pushing you for the real answer. He saw you reach forward to play music before sitting back. The trip was awkwardly silent, a foreign event to the two of you in the Jeep, seeing as it was always where you had your best conversations. The typical few minutes felt like an eternity to him. All he wanted was for you to talk to hi,, about anything really. But he could’t help but feel as if he did something wrong. He pulled into your driveway and you mumbled a thanks before opening your car door and walking into your house.

“Oh my god,” You let yourself drop into the couch and ran your hands through your hair. “I’m stupid. No beyond that, I’m idiotic. Of course he still likes her, that shit just doesn’t go away. God, I should just step back and let him-”

“Wanna share with the class, kiddo?” You heard your dad say from the counter, making you jump. You looked behind you to see him smiling kindly back at you.

“No. Yes? Ugh, I don’t know,” You mumbled. He got up and took the seat next to yours. “It’s just- god! Okay so you know about the whole Stiles thing? Well he was starting to show interest but I completely forgot that the reason I’ve always steered clear was because he’s like in love with Lydia. And I just let my own feelings cloud my judgement. I just don’t wanna force him into something he’s not ready for or be the girl he settles for, you know?”

“What?” Your dad chuckled. “Sweetheart, do you see the way that boy looks at you? He looks at you the way I look at my collection of rare Star Wars action figures. The ones from 1992.”

“I don’t think anyone looks at anything the way you look at those dolls, Dad,” You grumbled, crossing your arms.

“How many times do I have to tell you guys? They are not dolls, they’re- You know what? I’ll let it slide this one time since you’re clearly upset,” He said dramatically. you miserably held back a smile. “Y/N, don’t let your fear of rejection or loss be the reason you’re holding back from him. He likes you and you like him. It’s not a competition of who he likes more, which anyone can see is you… It’s more of a matter of like who gets there first.”

“Wha- Dad!” You groaned. “I don’t even know if that made me feel better or worse.”

“Okay, that came out wrong,” He corrected. “All I’m saying is that if you get into a relationship with him, it’s game over. Trust me, I’ve been there. I liked a million other girls in high school, but the second I began dating your mom, it all changed. Those girls were just people at school. And I fell head over heels for that woman. I never felt like I settled or even missed out on anything. And when I was with her, it was like we were the only two people on the planet. I think you should go for it, kiddo. You won’t regret it.”

“That’s.. actually really good advice,” You smiled at him. “Mom only ever tells me that I’ll figure it out and to keep the door open if he comes over.”

“That’s also a very important rule that I stand by,” He said sternly. You giggled and reached over to give him a hug. “Aww, c’mere. I missed you, squirt! … But I am serious about the door thing.”

Stiles: hey, do you maybe wanna come over tonight? scott’s not answering and i stole lydia’s phone. i need to show you something

Y/N: yeah let me go ask my dad to drop me off lol

Stiles: no need, i’m already here

You chuckled before putting your chemistry book back in your bag and slipping on a pair of sneakers. You grabbed your purse and told your dad that you were leaving before walking out to the jeep.

“Hey, you!” You smiled, hopping in.

“Wow, that must’ve been one hell of a nap,” Stiles laughed. “You’re like a new person.”

“You have no idea,” You responded. “So how’s Lydia?”

“Drugged up and traumatized,” He answered, pulling out her phone. “Look at what I found.”

“Is that Lydia’s phone?!”

“Just watch!”

He showed you a video of the Video 2C. It showed an animal figure jumping out of the glass window and running off into the night. He reversed it a little to show you that the culprit was very obviously an alpha. You felt your lips part as you looked up to see that he was already staring back at you with a concerned look.

“Get this, I even asked her what she saw, right? She said it was a mountain lion. Then I held up this stuffed giraffe and asked her to tell me what it was, and can you guess what she said? A fucking mountain lion!” Stiles stuffed the phone back into his pocket and reversed out of your driveway. “I panicked and stole it. I didn’t know what else to do.”

“Do we delete the video?” You asked. “She can’t have proof, it could backfire and get Scott or even Derek hurt.”

“That’s why I took it. I’ve been trying to get a hold of Scott since I found the video to his opinion on it too.”

“Do we have Derek’s number? Maybe he can give us some advice.”

“Wow, you’re real fond of Derek, aren’t ya?” He grumbled, making you laugh at his blatant jealousy. “I don’t see why you’re so concerned with him anyway.”

“Only in the same way you are about Lydia,” You shrugged, smiling at him. He gave you a look.

“Oh, please,” He argued, making a face. “That’s totally different. She’s a victim. And it’s a good thing I checked on her because I don’t know what would’ve happened with this video had I not seen it! I wasn’t flirting with her the way you do with Derek.”

“I don’t even like him,” You laughed. “He’s old and like obnoxiously serious. He weirds me out. Plus, the fact that I had to almost chop off his arm kind of sealed the deal. Why are you so concerned as to who I like anyway?”

He rolled his eyes and looked at you.

“You know why,” He finally said.

“Maybe,” You admitted, smiling. “But I wanna hear you say it.”

“Because I like you!” He shouted, barely building the confidence to look over at you. The smile that painted your face was all it took for him to continue. “A lot, actually. Like it’s ridiculous how much I like you.”

“Mm,” You said smugly.

“Mm? MM?!” He said loudly. “No, no, no, no. You don’t just get to say mm after I just admitted to liking you! Say it back!”

“Say it back?!” You laughed, making him smile. “How are you so sure that I do??”

“Because you definitely wouldn’t have kissed me the way you did,” He shrugged, making your jaw drop, which just fueled his confidence. “You like even moaned a little bit. You were all ‘mmm’-”

“OH MY GOD! STOP IT!” You covered your face with your hands, making him throw his head back in laughter. You slapped his chest before finally giving him what he wanted. “Okay, fine! Yes, I like you! Can you stop embarrassing me now?!”

“Why?” He chuckled, pulling into his driveway. “You look so pretty when you blush.”

“Huh, how weird because I don’t feel very pretty when I’m mortified,” You rolled your eyes. “Can we focus on the subject at hand please? What are we going to do with the video? And how are you going to return her phone?”

“Kiss me and we can go back to talking about the situation,” He smiled complacently.

“No!” You laughed.

“Why?” He pouted.

“Because for starters, you just made fun of me,” You giggled. “Also, I’m pretty sure we wouldn’t get anything done tonight if I kissed you right now. Let’s focus on solving this whole thing for now.”

“Such a buzzkill,” He teased as you both got out of his jeep. “Any word from Scott?”

“No, I think his phone died or something because it goes straight to voicemail,” You responded while he held his front door open for you. “You think he’s with Allison?”

“Duh.”

“Let me try her cell,” You said before walking to his room and calling her phone.

“Hello?” She answered after a few rings.

“Allison! Is Scott with you?”

“Uh,” She hesitated, there was a moment of muffled speech before she spoke up again. “No?”

“Pass the phone to him,” You said. “It’s important.”

“What?” Scott griped.

“We have a situation. A bad one. It has to do with last night,” You stayed ominous, feeling as if you were on speaker. “Also did you by chance forget about the parent teacher conference?”

“THAT’S TONIGHT?!” He shouted. “Okay, I need to swing by the school first but meet at your house afterwards?”

“I’m actually at Stiles’,” You hesitantly admitted.

“Oh?” You could HEAR the smirk on his face. “Why are you at Stiles’?”

“To figure out a way to save your ass,” You snapped. “Get to the school, asshole. I’m sure Melissa is hearing all about your grades and attendance.”

“Fuck off, I’m going!” He groaned. “I’ll meet you guys at your house in an hour. Let me know if you need more time though. Losing your virginity is a big deal, I don’t want to rush-”

“He said to meet him at my house in an hour,” You mumbled after hanging up on him.

“So what I’m hearing is that we have about fifty minutes to blow?” Stiles stepped closer, licking his lips. You felt your heart skip a beat.

“Mhm,” You smiled as he closed in the space between the two of you. “What should we do in the meantime?”

“I have a few ideas,” He said softly, only centimeters away from your lips. You bit your lip, feeling his warm breath against your skin. He leaned down and crashed his lips onto yours. This was different from your previous sweet encounters. He kissed you with a fervor you hadn’t quite experienced before.

You wrapped your arms around him as his soft lips moved against your own. His fingers tangled into your hair as he walked you back into his bed. He parted from you to allow you to fall into his familiar mattress, smiling before climbing on top of you to continue the passionate exchange.

The butterflies in your chest made it hard to breathe, yet you were completely comfortable with him. It’s as if you’ve shared a million kisses in past lives. There was a familiarity to the way he kissed you, the way he held you. Your bodies intertwined like the yarn of a lousy sweater, messily and in a disarray.

He often thought about what it would be like to kiss you like this. For years, he dreamt of what you tasted like, what your lips felt like when they pressed against his as they danced in harmony with one another. Nothing could’ve prepared him for the euphoric electricity that flowed through every single neuron in his body. He knew it would be good, but he never thought it would make him weak in the knees.

“What time is it?” You breathlessly pulled away after a while.

“Who cares?” He smiled, pressing back against you. He couldn’t get enough of your sweet, swollen lips. You giggled and kissed him back for a moment before pulling away again, still hovering over him. He pouted. “Noo, come back.”

“I need to catch my breath,” You giggled, grabbing your phone. Two missed calls from Scott. “Oh my god, it’s been an hour and a half.”

“In our defense, he ignored us all day,” He reached up to tuck a stray piece of hair behind your ear. His eyes glistened with pure adoration, a look that made your heart melt.

“Very true,” You smiled. “But it also is past my curfew, so I should really get going.”

“Mm, one more kiss,” He whined, making you laugh once more before kissing him. “Okay, fine. I guess I’ll take you home. Scott owes me big time for interrupting this.”

“Two paths, hmm?” Lao Nie said, squinting at the road markers in front of him. “Well, I don’t see why we can’t go down this one to the right –”

“No.”

“No? Why not?”

“Because little uncle asked me not to let you meet any new dangerous women,” Nie Mingjue said, looking as serious as ever – only his little hands, swinging to the side, revealed that he was just a ten-year-old. Still a child, no matter how mature he tried to act. “And a place called the Springtime Ghost Valley sounds like it probably has dangerous women.”

“Hey,” Lao Nie protested mildly. “Who’s the father here, me or you?”

“If a-die wants a new wife, little uncle will find one that isn’t inclined to kill him.”

That sounded like a recitation.

“Then what’s even the point,” Lao Nie grumbled, and reached out to ruffle his son’s hair, enjoying how Nie Mingjue yelped when he did, glaring up at him with offended dignity.

In all honesty, Lao Nie had no idea how he’d ended up with a son as serious and sincere and earnest as Nie Mingjue – he himself hadn’t taken anything seriously in years. Probably it was his mother’s influence.

Now that was a woman.

Not that his foxy second wife hadn’t been woman enough to blow him away either…

Hmm.

Perhaps they had a point about his taste in women.

“How about men?” Lao Nie suggested. “If it really means so much to you, I could swear off of women entirely –”

“A-die.”

“Mm?”

“Leave Sect Leader Wen alone.”

Lao Nie cracked up.

Because Lao Nie was the father, however easy-going he might sometimes be, they ended up heading down the right-hand path regardless. They were supposed to be night-hunting, after all – it was the perfect bonding experience according to Jiwei, though Lao Nie suspected his saber of having selfish intentions there – and deliberately avoiding a place with ‘Ghost’ in the name was hardly appropriate for scions of a Great Sect like theirs.

Although the reference to springtime was admittedly a little worrisome.

If it turned out to be a brothel, with the ghost thing being just a clever if somewhat tonedeaf marketing ploy, Lao Nie was turning around and taking them both home at once. He wasn’t going to risk little Nie Mingjue turning out anything like that awful Jin Guangshan – or, nearly as bad, having to explain anything more about the joys of sex to those earnest little button eyes and dimpled cheeks with no time to prepare first. He still hadn’t recovered emotionally from the last few times Nie Mingjue had asked him a question like that.

When they finally reached the end of the path, turning a corner to behold a clearing that was probably completely ordinary during the daytime, Lao Nie found that he’d been both right and wrong.

“It’s a ghost brothel,” he marveled. He’d never seen anything like it in his life.

“Dangerous women,” Nie Mingjue reminded him.

“A-Jue! Let your father live a little!”

Nie Mingjue rolled his eyes.

Lao Nie virtuously ignored his slightly judgmental brat of a son. It wouldn’t do him that much harm to go visit for a while, with the risk of Jin Guangshan-ness being relatively minimal; they were ghosts, after all. It was the duty of every cultivator to fight against evil, wherever it lived, no matter its form –

“Fighting? Is that what it’s called?”

“Who taught you sarcasm?” Lao Nie asked, knowing perfectly well that the answer was himself. “I ought to smack them.”

Nie Mingjue crossed his arms over his chest and pouted at him. “Fine, it’s fighting, we’ll go fight them. Do you want me to start drawing ghost-repelling talismans?”

“Liberate first!” Lao Nie sang out. “Come on, let’s go see what they’re like – er, that is, I mean, see what grievances they have that are keeping them here, of course. There’s no harm in dangerous women. Just don’t let them eat your yang energy!”

“It’s not my yang energy that I’m worried about, a-die…”

The ghostly madame was an extraordinarily charming person and Lao Nie liked her at once.

Not liked her liked her – he’d fallen head over heels with both of his wives from the first word, and that hadn’t happened here – but still, conversing with her was an extraordinarily enjoyable way to spend time.

She was witty and clever, with a broad range of knowledge and a gift for keeping a conversation lively and exciting; she could meet every verbal riposte with ease, and looked utterly gorgeous and composed the entire time. Sure, she kept trying to lure Lao Nie into an orgy in which all of his yang energy would be slowly sucked out before his body was ripped to pieces and his bones cracked open so that the ghosts could consume the marrow within, but what a way to go, right?

Nie Mingjue spent his time making friends with the ghost prostitutes.

Lao Nie wasn’t sure what he’d been expecting.

Well, he supposed he’d been expected a range of things – anything from Nie Mingjue getting suckered in by one of the ghosts and needing to be rescued by his father to Nie Mingjue just pulling out his Baxia and trying to stab them because he felt offended by their existence. He wasn’texpecting his ghostly conversational partner to suddenly frown mid-sentence and say, “What is he talking to them about?”

Lao Nie turned his head slightly and started listening.

“– just because you’re a ghost doesn’t mean you have to work allthe time, surely,” Nie Mingjue was saying, completely serious and earnest in the way he so often was. Lao Nie’s son had in fact inherited his sense of humor, only it tended to be buried fairly deep down and make its way up to the surface in an understated way in the most unexpected times; the rest of the time, he was straightforward to a fault, treating everything sincerely. “The birds in the trees, the animals in the fields – even among prostitutes, even the street-walking ladies know they need to take time to rest! I can’t believe you really have to work every single night. How long has it been since you had a night off?”

The ghost prostitutes around him had contemplative looks on their faces.

“Isn’t the whole point of becoming a vengeful man-eating ghost that you have more power than regular humans? I don’t know, it kind of seems like a bad deal if you have even worse conditions after all that –”

“I’m sorry,” the ghostly madame said, looking irritated underneath all her carefully painted smiles. “If you’ll excuse me for a moment…”

Lao Nie had to bite his hand to keep from laughing out loud.

“I think we’ve all learned a valuable life lesson today,” Lao Nie announced.

Nie Mingjue was pouting again.

“I don’t think we did,” he said, sounding profoundly skeptical. A filial child like Nie Mingjue shouldn’t sound so skeptical of his beloved father’s words of wisdom, really; if Lao Nie wasn’t so heartless, he might be offended. Of course, the skepticism might have originated from the heartlessness, so it was all six of one, half a dozen of the other in the end. “Those poor ghost ladies! They were still fighting each other by the time we left!”

“I’ve never seen a ghost pull another ghost’s hair before,” Lao Nie conceded. It had been brilliant. “One day, someone’s going to figure out a more reliable way to use ghosts to fight ghosts, mark my words.”

“Isn’t that demonic cultivation?”

“Oh, sure,” Lao Nie said, still cheerful. “If whoever it is does too much of it, eventually it’ll build up into a backlash that’ll kill them in some grossly horrific manner. Probably ripped into pieces by the backlash. And that’s not even counting how they’d be ostracized and hunted by the cultivation world first! But still, imagine how exciting it’d be in the meantime!”

“A-die…”

Lao Nie patted Nie Mingjue on the head again, earning another glare. “Immortality is a lie, A-Jue. We’re all here for a short time, each and every one of us, and only the length determined by fate and man. All that matters is what we do with the time that we have, and whether we’ve used it well.”

“To fight against evil wherever it lives, no matter its form?”

“To leave the world a better place than when we entered it, and to let our memories linger in the hearts of those that love us,” Lao Nie said. “Fighting evil is the best way to accomplish the former, and living a good life the latter. And you might as well have a good time doing it, if you can! Everything else is just extra.”

Nie Mingjue thought about that for a moment. “And a-die likes to have second helpings of extras?”

That was true. Lao Nie was a man of prodigious appetites of all sorts.

Despite that, he protested, “That wasn’t the point I was trying to make. I was being serious for once.” Seeing Nie Mingjue’s skeptical look, he made a face. “I can be serious, sometimes!”

“Can you?”

There’s fighting evil, which is only right, and then there’s suicide, which is a waste – a wise man should know how to judge the difference between them. Anyway, that wasn’t the point I was trying to make.”

“It wasn’t?”

“It wasn’t, and you aren’t allowed to start worrying about the fate of theoretical baby dragons – I forbid it.” Nie Mingjue scowled. He’d probably started worrying already. “My point was actually that a pearl like this is a remarkably powerful protective tool for cultivators – one of those things that can only be found by chance and not made. Nie Mingjue looked thoughtful.
