@archduchesskittycat my single biggest book hot take is preferring the older PJO illustrations.
The new ones are gorgeous, but I think the old ones making everyone look like awkward, scrungly little squishy-cheeked tweens is more in keeping with the philosophy of the series. The whole point of PJO is to make excluded kids feel represented, and I feel like I could walk into my highschool library and see any kid Antonio Caparo has ever drawn sitting at the table booked out for chess club.
How mad would everyone be if I used the OG pjo illustrations because that's what I grew up with

These new fans are so spoiled. They weren’t subjected to the horrors of the original character illustrations.
Anyway, here’s the original character illustrations—

(lol I really like both these series and characters, I just think the 5000+ immortal age gap makes a tiny bit of joking around fair).

I think Disney changed Poseidon the most. Not just in his personality and looks and story arc. But he’s also a lot thinner.
Not just this show, but the movie and all later artwork slim Poseidon down. Very telling the one thing that everyone changes about him is his weight.
(Artwork on the right is by Antonio Caparo ).

In honor of the Percy Jackson series, I've been browsing the Riordan Wiki, and I was reminded of the existence of the art of Antonio Caparo. He has an... interesting art style that I'm not sure has aged all that well.
For instance, here's his take on Luke:
Tumblr media
Looks all right. A bit cross-eyed, but well-done enough. But it's not accurate. This is text straight from the first novel:
"The guy was about nineteen, and he looked pretty cool. He was tall and muscular, with short-cropped sandy hair and a friendly smile. He wore an orange tank top, cutoffs, sandals and a leather necklace with five different-colored clay beads. The only thing unsettling about his appearance was a thick white scar that ran from just beneath his right eye to his jaw, like an old knife slash."
Luke Castellan got Zuko'd in the first official piece of art we ever got of him.
