Veronica Swift  “Veronica Swift”

Some albums that get released after a very long time surprise us thanks to their contexts. For instance, The Next Day by David Bowie was a huge shock, since many assumed he retired. Still, we must admit the LP could be braver, though one needs to understand Bowie merely wished to see back then – this is my personal theory –, if he still commands our attention. Thus, the disc finds him doing his greatest hits in the version of a platter of an original material, which seemed like an appropriate thing to do for someone of his stature. For instance, the tune on the link reminds us of his previous tributes to Scott Walker, yet this one seemed different thanks to him pointing there towards his final destination in the form of a disc.

Happy New Year babies!!!!
*****
Billy Porter has been added to the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
*****
Predictors are saying that book stores are making a comeback and that mocktails will be big in 2023. The reasoning is that people drank way too much during Covid and also discovered they like REAL books. High -end dive bars and jello shots are also trending.   It also seems that we have a bit of a 70’s revival going on.
*****
The new USPS stamps for 2023 have been revealed: Look for John Lewis, Tomie dePaula, the Everglades, skateboard art, life magnified, bridges and the Northern Cardinal.
*****
Days alert: I am miserable about Xander and Sarah. And nobody knows what to think of this shady Eric. Is it Eric? Has he just plain had enough of the good guy image? Samantha needs to come to town and be an angel. I mean it would be great cuz you could never trust it. So glad that Roman and Kate are together but let’s give them a real story!! Let’s not push Abe and Paulina too far in the background. We all love them!!!!!!
*****
Sexual assault news: Steven Tyler has been accused of sexual assault of a minor.** Andrew Tate, an influencer, kickboxer, reality show dude and his brother, Tristan were arrested for human trafficking. They are suspected of recruiting, housing and exploiting women by forcing them to create porn to sell.

With so many movies making it seem like everybody wants a ride in Santa’s sleigh, I guess there should be more amusement rides like that.

Word is that Election is back in Tracy Flick can’t win.
*****
Variety named Psycho the best movie of all time. I have been saying that for years. I realize there are many important films but I can think of nothing that changed the game like this one.

Time’s person of the year is Volodymyr Zelensky and the spirit of Ukraine. Zelensky came to Washington and visited Biden. The Ukraine Pres gave a speech which was mostly well received. Pelosi looked like she was going to eat him alive. Republicans in the house will probably try to stop money from going to the cause.

Leslie Jones, Sarah Silverman, Chelsea Handler, Jordan Klepper and Roy Wood Jr. Will fill in as Trevor Noah leaves the Daily Show. Who will finally be the next host?
*****
I really miss the show Stumptown!!

Einstein on the Beach. Эйнштейн на пляже. Роберт Уилсон и Филипп Гласс. from Форма агентство в on Vimeo.
Лейбл: Chatelet/Telmondis/Mezzo Страна-производитель: Франция, Théâtre du Châtelet Жанр: Opera (Minimalism) Продолжительность: 4.32'23"10 Язык: English Перевод: не требуется Субтитры: French hardsubs Режиссер/Хореограф: дирижер Michael Riesman, постановщик Robert Wilson Исполнители: Helga Davis, Kate Moran, Antoine Silverman, Jasper Newell, Charles Williams, Jennifer Koh, The Lucinda Childs Dance Company, The Philip Glass Ensemble Треклист: Опера в 4-х актах, музыка и текст Philip Glass и Robert Wilson, хореограф Lucinda Childs, режиссер телетрансляции Don Kent Описание: 7 января 2014 года на сцене Théâtre du Châtelet Боб Уилсон представил восстановленную версию своего легендарного спектакля «Эйнштейн на пляже».

Rites of Spring Proves That The Rush Of Good Storytelling is Worth The Ride

Review 209
It’s always interesting and challenging writing reviews of short play festivals. You have to honor the work of a whole bunch of people in an itty bitty amount of time. When you throw in the fact that these plays were written, rehearsed, and performed in a short amount of time you also have to honor the amount of experimentation and expression involved. These plays didn’t exist just a little while ago and now they do. It’s that joy of creation that makes writing these reviews so rewarding.
Tumblr media
Each of the Eight Teams had a prompt or a line to use in the story and a prop. Then they had to write a play about something Spring themed. Let’s see how they did!

Spring Cleaning for Mrs. J
Written by: Orlando F. Rodriguez
Directed by Mia Y Anderson
Cast- Luana Seu, Judd Silverman, Josephine Pizzino
She has to do spring cleaning and finds a cursed object and has to solve riddles to escape a magical bird. The husband doesn’t listen to us however and chaos ensues. The characters were super relatable to us since we are a married couple ourselves. Dana couldn’t keep from yelling at the screen saying this guy had better listen up. If that had been Dana and me in this situation I would have been dead before the last wish. We both appreciated the nice twist at the ending. Playwriting is all about managing tension and staying ahead of expectations. The fact that Rodriguez was able to do that in a short time was amazing. Kudos to some brilliant directing by Anderson and the talented cast.

Eggs In One Basket
Written By: Donna Latham
Directed by: Chelsey Smith
Cast-Ralane Cantisano, Raul Chavez, Samuel Neagley, Maggie Kissinger
A girl is taking a boyfriend back to her magical childhood stomping grounds. Her fairy besties are not amused. The acting of our two performers playing the fairies was really effective. Dana and I Iove fairies and pop culture and these were a great balance between mystical beings and your catty best friends. We like the idea of modern fairies telling you to dump your man. I now have to add “Starbucks date with these fairies” to my bucket list and that is the best review I could give to Latham’s playwriting.
Tumblr media
Chasing Juliet
Written by Katie Frazier
Directed by Brock Hill
Cast: Lluvia Almanza, Anel Carmona, Orlando F. Rodriguez, Maya Schnaider, Zara Kaahn
This story about a young woman trying to keep up with her favorite blogger shows us why keeping up with the Joneses doesn’t always pay off. We both laughed at the “identities as a haunted house” line! We loved that this play was funny AF and got to the point quickly. Kudos to the cast on this one for pulling off a great performance.
Tumblr media
Riots of Spring: The Audition
Written By Becky Saunders
Directed by Antonio Mniño
Cast Ellie Mae Niller, Sean Phillips, Samantha Simone
This play about a mistaken identity at an audition was performed excellently but it did seem to have a pacing problem. That’s a shame because I personally favor plays that attempt something ambitious like an episodic structure in a short form. It was weird and wacky and I have no clue why they did it but I’m glad they tried it. When pulled off correctly these things can really shine. I’d love to see if Saunders does a second version after this. A revision not done under the ticking clock might kick this good play up a notch to phenomenal.
Tumblr media
Miracle Birds
Written by Ben Dworken
Directed by Paul Andrews
The Cast: Jonathan Wong Frye, Jennifer Atkinson, Isabelle Barany, Mary Sheridan
I have literally had fever dreams about a day when I’ll be walking out in a mask and people will be staring at me like I’m a freak because everyone except me for this universal message that COVID was over except me. So I really feel for this dude. Now these three ladies and their miracle birds were absolutely nothing from my dreams. Very good acting on the part of Atkinson, Barany, and Sheridan and kudos to Wong Frye for going along with that “is this even real” face. Good job to Ben Dworken for making me Google and see if Miracle Birds even exist. I hope I never see these ladies and their bird nest in a dark or well lit alley.

The Year Of The Fall Of May
Written by Susan Goodell
Directed by Paige Washington
Cast-Jo Walker, Natalie Osborne, Rick Benson
Three individuals wonder if they angered the goddess by not performing the May festival. We didn’t know what the stakes were or what would happen if the parade didn’t get done this year.
There was no urgency as if the play lacked heat. You know how you test a skillet’s temperature by hovering your hand over it? We seemed able to stay a long time in this moment. We had brilliant characters and a talented cast. The Good news is I think Goodell has such a great foundation for this play that with a couple of tweaks it will get much better. If I were your dramaturge I would just add a line about the city being destroyed by giant chickens if the parade doesn’t happen (or something to that effect). Whatever you choose would be fine.
Tumblr media
The Rite-ing on the wall.
Written By Anel Carmona
Directed by Crystal Ramirez
Cast- Johnny Blaze Leavitt, Mateo Moreno
Ever thought what would happen if magic spells had tech support? Well no you do! This one was oddly weird. I know that’s not a thing but after seeing this yes it is. It’s exactly what I meant about keeping the tension ramped up. Even though it was splotches on a wall, Carmona's writing kept me feeling itchy. Great job from the cast for selling it so well. I feel like our director Ramirez and Carmona had to have a great rapport to get this idea working.
Tumblr media
Blue Man Manakins
Written by Molly Kirschner
Directed by Lanise Antoine Shelley
Cast-Ita Korenzecher, Jennifer Iris Rivera, Chris Jumper, Stephanie D. Barney.
This show about birds trying to find a mate seemed to gender swap. We apologize for any assumption about gender but it seemed as though toxic masculinity was coming from a femme perspective and we loved that. That’s one of the great things that we artists get to do sometimes. When we treat the stage like a snow globe and shake things up we can have fun seeing what comes falling down. The cast did an amazing job working with the playwright and director on this idea. Overall a great performance.
This production shows you exactly why short form festivals like these are so vital. This is what is possible when talented people are constrained in space in time. This is the kind of artistry and expression that comes when artists get rid of their internal block and allow themselves to create freely. We as the audience get to come in with the same nervous excitement we would have if we were riding a rollercoaster. Will we make it or will we crash and burn?

Baltimore’s Mayor, Catherine Pugh, Resigns Amid Children’s Book Scandal
Tumblr media
After weeks of mounting pressure, Mayor Catherine Pugh of Baltimore resigned on Thursday amid a widening scandal involving hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of children’s books that she wrote and that the University of Maryland Medical System paid for while she was serving on its board of directors.
Her resignation comes days after the Baltimore City Council proposed amending the city charter to make it possible to remove her, and after the F.B.I. raided her two homes and her office at City Hall.
Ms. Pugh stepped down from the hospital network’s board, which she had served on since 2001, but she had resisted calls to step down as mayor. She has been home on medical leave for weeks. Her lawyer told reporters previously that she was too ill to make decisions. Bernard Young, president of the Baltimore City Council, has been serving as acting mayor and will complete the rest of her term.
“I am sorry for the harm that I have caused to the image of Baltimore and the credibility of the office of the mayor,” Ms. Pugh said in a statement read aloud by her lawyer, Steve Silverman, at a brief news conference that she did not attend. “Baltimore deserves a mayor who can move our great city forward.”
Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan, who appoints the board of the University of Maryland Medical System, applauded Ms. Pugh’s resignation in a post on Twitter.
“This was the right decision, as it was clear the mayor could no longer lead effectively,” he wrote. “The federal and state investigations must and will continue to uncover the facts.”
Ms. Pugh has been under intense scrutiny since March, when The Baltimore Sun reported that she was one of nine members of the board of the University of Maryland Medical System who had profited personally from contracts with the hospital system.
When the scandal broke, Ms. Pugh maintained that there was nothing illegal or unethical about her deal to sell her “Healthy Holly” children’s books, which promote nutritious food and exercise, to the hospital network. The books were to be donated to Baltimore schools and day cares.
She apologized for failing to report the deal on disclosure forms when she was a state senator and returned the most recent payment of $100,000.
But questions continued to swirl over who authorized the contract and how many of the books actually reached children, especially after thousands of books were discovered untouched in a school warehouse. Ms. Pugh has received $500,000 since 2011 from the medical system for the books. Other entities, including Kaiser Permanente, reportedly paid her an additional $190,000 for the books.
“This whole entire episode has been hurtful to the city,” said Jill Carter, a state senator representing Baltimore who has been pushing to limit self-dealing on the hospital network’s board. “Those of us who are holding elected office now, it is incumbent upon us to do everything in our power to restore the public trust.”
Ms. Carter said she began investigating the hospital network’s contracts after hearing complaints from minority-owned businesses that it was impossible for them to bid on contracts, while politically connected board members received lucrative deals that did not go through normal channels of procurement.
Ms. Carter noted that other board members reaped far more from the hospital network, including Francis X. Kelly, who advocated the privatization of the hospital network as a state senator, and went on to obtain $16 million in contracts through his insurance company, Kelly & Associates Insurance Group.
“It’s been very troubling to me that so much focus has been placed on the mayor that there has been too little scrutiny and too little desire to investigate the other members,” Ms. Carter said.
The hospital network’s website lists Mr. Kelly as being “on leave” from the board, along with three other members who had business contracts. He did not return a call seeking comment Thursday.
A recent bill passed by Maryland’s General Assembly will replace the medical system’s entire board in July, and generally prohibits future board members from receiving no-bid contracts.
Michael Schwartzberg, a spokesman for the medical system’s management, said it would not be issuing a statement on the mayor’s resignation.
Ms. Pugh, who was elected mayor in 2016, has long been a fixture in the city’s politics. She previously served as a state senator and majority leader in Maryland’s General Assembly. Her resignation comes after a series of other corruption scandals in the city have shaken faith in Baltimore’s government. Last year, six Baltimore police officers pleaded guilty in a wide-ranging corruption trial that included robbing a motorist of $25,000 and dumping garbage bags full of stolen prescription drugs on the market.
The city, which endured riots and unrest in the wake of the 2015 death in police custody of Freddie Gray, a 25-year-old black man, has seen four police commissioners cycle through since Mr. Gray’s death. Last year, former police commissioner Darryl De Sousa pleaded guilty in federal court to failing to file income tax returns. In 2010, another Baltimore mayor, Sheila Ann Dixon, resigned after being found guilty of misappropriating gift cards for the poor.
Joanne Antoine, executive director of Common Cause Maryland, a nonpartisan watchdog organization, said her group has received several calls from people expressing a loss of faith in Ms. Pugh. But Ms. Antoine said she is heartened by recent proposals brought by Baltimore City Council members to tighten ethics disclosure rules and make it easier to remove the mayor.
“I think we’re on the verge of recovering from all of this,” she said. “We believe the City Council is taking steps to move forward.”

David Henry Hwang was attacked by an unknown assailant with a knife and nearly died. That experience, along with the playwright’s shock at the results of the 2016 Presidential election and his oft-expressed ambivalence towards the patronizing but gorgeous Rodgers and Hammerstein musical “The King and I,” all make their way into “Soft Power,” an unusual musical by Hwang and composer Jeanine Tesori that inventively and oddly presents the themes of East-West divide that Hwang has long explored in such works as “M Butterfly” and “Chinglish.” “Soft Power” is clever, highly entertaining, hilarious, in places downright inspiring, and chock full of stimulating intellectual, cultural and political argument that forces us to look at American society, and the very nature of democracy, in a different way. “Soft Power” is also, ok, confused….but not confusing.
The heart of “Soft Power” is a spoof of “The King and I” that reverses and updates the story so that the “king” is Hillary Clinton (Alyse Alan Louis) and the “I” is a Chinese musical  producer named Xūe Xíng (standout Conrad Ricamora, who was, in a delicious irony, one of the stars in the last Broadway production of “The King and I.”)  The reversal reflects Hwang’s irritation at such American musicals “where the white hero goes to some dangerous land and civilizes the backwards natives. The writers get all these details wrong. And the locals somehow speak with stupid accents — in their own country.” At the same time, though, such shows make Hwang cry.
The David Henry Hwang who expresses these views is a character in “Soft Power,” portrayed winningly by Francis Jue. The first half hour of “Soft Power” is a set-up for the musical spoof to follow. Xue Xing meets with David Henry Hwang (called DHH in the program) in 2016 to entice him to write a musical for the Chinese market.  His idea is to use it as a vehicle to bring Chinese values to the world, which is what he says “soft power” means, and what the United States has done for decades through such “international products” as Catcher in the Rye and Saturday Night Fever.
DHH is going to a fundraiser for Hillary Clinton, and invites Xue along, where he gets to meet the candidate and get a selfie with her. The two men are both shocked when Hillary loses. Then DHH is stabbed….
“In the moment before I lose consciousness,” he tells us in front of the curtain, “a whole world passes before my eyes. I hear … violins?” – and the curtain opens to offer a musical from China’s point of view – which, like American musicals, shows Xue traveling to the dangerous land of New York, the details are all wrong (the Golden Gate Bridge is in New York), and the locals (Asian-American actors in blond wigs) all have stupid American accents, and carry guns. What follows is a mock razzle-dazzle em musical.  At “the most famous American restaurant of all” – a gussied up McDonald’s —  rolling-skating chorus boys deliver elegant burgers, while Hillary  dances for the voters in a sparkling red tuxedo pantsuit, which she strips off to reveal a skimpy Wonder Woman costume. The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court explaining the electoral college system using a suspiciously all-gold ballot box.
Presumably, this has all been DHH’s hallucination brought on by blood loss.
Then , however, Act II begins with a panel by Chinese experts fifty years in the future, during the intermission of the 50thanniversary performance of “Soft Power.” The panelists describe it as a landmark in Chinese art, an example of a new type of theater invented by the Chinese — “’Shūo chàngjù’ — literally ‘spoken and sung drama.’” This very funny scene sharply satirizes Western paternalism towards Asian art by flipping it (“There were no American artists per se. Only native craftspeople.”)
But is this still DHH’s hallucination, or have we dropped that?  The context of the musical we’re watching becomes  unclear. And when the musical picks up again after the panel discussion, the parallels to “The King and I” seem dropped as well.
Soft Power’s creative team is well versed in the American musical form. Director Leigh Silverman (Tony-nominated for Violet, who has been at the helm of some 30 stellar productions Off-Broadway) has put together a fine production on the relatively small stage at the Public Theater. Tesori, Tony-winning composer of “Fun Home” and “Caroline or Change”, has composed 13 songs that range from beautiful ballad to comic hip-hop, lushly performed by a 22-piece orchestra in full view on multiple tiers above the stage. Choreographer Camille A. Brown (Tony-nominated for Choir Boy) provides some expert moves for the performers, most of whom are Asian-American, many of whom are Broadway veterans, all of whom are first rate.
Yet, for all the experienced talent involved, “Soft Power” doesn’t feel like a fully realized musical (in the manner of, say, “The Book of Mormon,” which also includes a satire of “The King and I.”)  I doubt whether even the creative team of “Soft Power” could graph its plot.
This personally strikes me as an almost insignificant complaint in a show that, thanks to Hwang’s passion and sense of urgency, has the potential to change the way we look at the world, and at our own culture. “Soft Power” is at its most powerful when Xūe criticizes American society and democracy in ways that are frankly hard to refute. “Communism in China has raised hundreds of millions out of poverty. “But here in America, you have too much freedom,” he says to DHH in one of many such pointed observations. “You really believe your voting will force the rich to give up their money? Here, you cannot even force your mentally ill to give up their guns. “

Baltimore’s Mayor, Catherine Pugh, Resigns Amid Children’s Book Scandal
If you were a medical system executive, would you purchase $500,000 for children’s books written by a member of your Board of Directors: (1) Yes, (2) No? What are the ethics underlying your decision?
