Top 10 Best Historical Coins for Collectors
The world of historical coin collecting is a fascinating intersection of art, history, and investment. Each coin carries with it the story of the era it represents, whether it's from ancient civilizations, significant historical events, or minted during the reign of great rulers. Collectors in the luxury niche appreciate historical coins not only for their beauty and rarity but also for their intrinsic value as pieces of world history. In this blog, we explore the top 10 best historical coins for collectors, delving into their backgrounds, rarity, and why they continue to captivate collectors.
1. Athenian Owl Tetradrachm (Circa 440 BC)
The Athenian Owl Tetradrachm is one of the most iconic coins from ancient Greece, recognized by its detailed depiction of an owl, the symbol of Athena, the goddess of wisdom. Minted in silver, this coin was used as currency throughout the ancient Greek world and remains one of the most collectible ancient coins today. Collectors prize the Tetradrachm for its symbolism and craftsmanship. Its strong association with the golden age of Athens and its link to the birthplace of democracy make it a standout in any collection. Depending on its condition, an Athenian Owl Tetradrachm can fetch prices ranging from $1,000 to over $20,000.
2. Roman Denarius of Julius Caesar (Circa 44 BC)
Coins featuring Julius Caesar hold immense historical significance, particularly the Roman Denarius issued during his reign. This coin, minted just before his assassination in 44 BC, features a portrait of Caesar on one side and various Roman symbols on the reverse. It is one of the earliest examples of a living ruler being depicted on currency, marking a critical shift in Roman coinage. Collectors of ancient coins are drawn to the Roman Denarius for its rarity and its direct connection to one of history’s most famous figures. Prices for Julius Caesar Denarii vary but can reach into the tens of thousands of dollars, especially for well-preserved pieces.
3. St. Gaudens Double Eagle (1907-1933)
The St. Gaudens Double Eagle is often regarded as one of the most beautiful coins ever produced by the United States Mint. Designed by the famous sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens, the coin features a striking depiction of Lady Liberty striding forward with a torch and an olive branch, symbolizing enlightenment and peace. These $20 gold coins were minted from 1907 to 1933, with certain rare editions, like the 1933 Double Eagle, becoming extremely valuable. One 1933 Double Eagle sold for over $7 million at auction, making it one of the most expensive coins in the world. Collectors appreciate the Double Eagle for its beauty, historical significance, and rarity.
4. Spanish 8 Escudo "Gold Doubloon" (Late 16th to 19th Century)
The Spanish 8 Escudo, also known as the "gold doubloon," is one of the most famous coins from the Age of Exploration. Minted in the Spanish colonies, these large gold coins were used extensively in trade and became synonymous with pirate treasure. Their historical connection to the Spanish Empire, the wealth of the New World, and the era of maritime exploration make them highly sought after by collectors. Gold doubloons are valued based on their condition, minting date, and rarity, with well-preserved examples selling for upwards of $10,000 or more.
5. British Gold Sovereign (1817-Present)
The British Gold Sovereign is one of the longest-running coinage series in history, with its roots stretching back to 1817. Featuring the profile of the reigning British monarch on one side and the iconic image of St. George slaying the dragon on the other, the gold sovereign has remained a symbol of British stability and power. Collectors are particularly interested in rare or early sovereigns, such as those minted during the reign of Queen Victoria or George III. While modern gold sovereigns are still produced today, the older and rarer ones can fetch thousands of dollars at auction, especially those from limited mintages or special issues.
6. Morgan Silver Dollar (1878-1904, 1921)
The Morgan Silver Dollar is an American classic and a favorite among coin collectors for its historical value and beautiful design. Minted during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it features a portrait of Lady Liberty on one side and an eagle on the reverse. Named after its designer, George T. Morgan, this silver dollar is particularly prized for its large size, high silver content, and its place in American history during the post-Civil War era and the westward expansion. Collectors particularly seek rare mint marks, such as those from the Carson City Mint, with prices for these rarities reaching into the thousands.
7. 1794 Flowing Hair Silver Dollar
Considered one of the most valuable American coins, the 1794 Flowing Hair Silver Dollar was the first silver dollar ever struck by the United States Mint. The coin features a portrait of Lady Liberty with flowing hair on the obverse and an eagle surrounded by a wreath on the reverse. With fewer than 200 known to exist, this coin is exceedingly rare, and its historical significance makes it one of the most desirable coins for collectors. In 2013, a 1794 Flowing Hair Silver Dollar sold for a record-breaking $10 million, highlighting its value as a key piece of American numismatic history.
8. Ducat of the Dutch Republic (Late 16th to Early 18th Century)

It became widely accepted in international trade and is known for its high gold content and consistent quality. The ducat often featured a knight holding a sword and a bundle of arrows, symbolizing strength and unity. Collectors are drawn to these coins not only for their historical value but also for their connection to the Dutch Republic’s period of economic and military power. Prices for well-preserved Dutch ducats can range from $2,000 to $10,000.
9. Chinese Yuan Shih-kai Silver Dollar (1914-1928)
Also known as the "Fat Man" Dollar, the Chinese Yuan Shih-kai Silver Dollar is one of the most iconic coins from early 20th-century China. The coin features a portrait of Yuan Shih-kai, the first president of the Republic of China, making it a significant piece of Chinese history. These silver dollars were heavily circulated, but high-quality examples are becoming increasingly rare and valuable. Collectors of Asian coins appreciate the historical context of the Yuan Shih-kai dollar, and prices for these coins have steadily risen in recent years, with top-grade examples selling for thousands of dollars.
10. Constantine the Great Solidus (Circa 4th Century AD)
The Constantine the Great Solidus is one of the most valuable coins from the Roman Empire, minted during the reign of Emperor Constantine in the 4th century AD. Prices for Constantine solidus coins can range from $5,000 to over $20,000, depending on their rarity and condition.

Hey guys! Finally onto chapter 2 of Divisa! I could've made this longer, but I wasn't sure I'd have a stopping point if I continued so if the ending seems abrupt– that's why. Also, there will be a ton of posts today, none are too important. Just the Divisa Masterlist, the page to navigate to each character moodboard, annnd the five moodboards!
Now, please do bear in mind that the Love Interests moodboard will have spoilers pertaining to their backstories, so if you don't want to seem them, then look past the bio and look at the pictures I included! 🩷 I know I probably shouldn't post any spoilers for this since I'm only on chapter two and no character is fully fleshed out just yet but...I wanted to! If anything in their bio changes in the future, I just thought of something better. That's all.

☆ Masterlist ☆
“What're you talking about?” Your brows knit toward and you try to grab the photo from him, but Sylus holds it above his head.
“Ezekiel L/n. Forty-five years old. His pregnant girlfriend went missing over twenty-three years ago when a rift opened in their downtown apartment complex.” The man finally decides to quit teasing you and sets the photo in your hand.
“He's been a Hunter for over twenty-six years, so it's hard to not know him.”
That's…odd. From your knowledge of the games, the first Deepspace Tunnel opened in 2034 with the Chronorift Catastrophe…so how come the dates are off?
You clear your throat, snatching your wallet back to tuck the photo back safe inside. “Well, I don't know him.” You look away from Sylus.
Something about this felt…
This whole ordeal felt off.
How the hell was your father from here?? If your mom clearly has pictures with this man, could it just be a coincidence? That, perhaps, your father just so happens to resemble this man?
“You don't know your own father?” Sylus hums, tapping his index finger against his temple.
“Never met him before.” You sigh, setting your coin purse onto the table. “Look, are you going to buy anything or not? I'm done talking about my family issues.” You cross your arms over your chest and you can tell Sylus is thinking about his response before there's a knock on the door.
One of the men walks over to Sylus, whispering something to him, and you hear Sylus click his tongue. “That damn fish…” He sounds annoyed, but he nods his head.
“Sure, let him in.”
“It appears you have another buyer.” Sylus waves his hand and the coin purse gets wrapped in a reddish black mist, before it floats into his hand.
As he opens the purse to look through the coins, a second person enters the room.
What in the main character luck…
A purple haired man dressed in a sleek suit waltzes over to Sylus, crossing his arms over his chest as he stands over the other man. “Were you trying to monopolize all of these rare artifacts?” The man clicks his tongue. “Seriously, Carrion*, you know I need antique coins for my showcase next month.”
“If I were the seller, Betta*, I wouldn't sell you a damn thing. Considering you ignored them.” Sylus glances up from your coin purse and jerks his head in your direction.
You were silent as the familiar purple-haired man turned to look at you. You knew your face was covered so he wouldn't immediately recognize you, but your body broke out in a cold sweat in fear that he might realize who you could be, just by looking at your eyes.
“Wait…” The man's eyes narrow as he takes the seat closest to you. “Can you..” He motions toward his face, miming the action of pulling down a mask. “You seem familiar.”
Your breath hitches in your throat and your eyes dart over to Sylus, coincidentally meeting his eyes and he chuckles. He shakes his head and pats Betta on the shoulder. “Tone it down a bit, yeah? She's in a bit of shock. Introduce yourself first before you scare off a big catch.”
“I'll use my real name then, if she's so worried. Rafayel.” He holds his hand out toward you and you grab his fingers, shaking his hand that way instead. “We use code names at the Nest, not that it matters since we have easily recognizable faces. Carrion is Sylus. But you can use a code name, if you want. It seems like you're a little worried about revealing your identity.”
“Ah…” you ponder for a moment before you finally make a decision on your codename. You definitely couldn't use your own name, so you settled on the nickname your mom gave you in the womb.
“You can call me Comet.”
“Alright then, Comet…So what had her so shocked?” Rafayel turns to look at Sylus and the white haired man pauses his search once more with an annoyed sigh.
“She was shocked to learn that her father is Ezekiel L/n.” Is all he says and Rafayel's head snaps in your direction.
“Wait, seriously?” He looks you up and down before you sigh and pull the photo back out. “So it is true…Wait. I know him. He commissioned a painting a while back and..” he taps his finger against the half with your mom on it.
“He wanted a painting of her. I finished it, but I could never find him again to hand it over.”
“Can I have it?” You can't stop yourself from asking and your hand quickly flies up to cover your masked mouth.
Rafayel chuckles, running a hand through his hair. “If I can find a 2000 Sacagawea, a 1947 Silver Walking Liberty half dollar, and a 2023 Silver Peace Dollar then I'll gladly give you it– as long as I don't have to pay for my coins.” He flashes you a smile. “Deal?”
“I have no idea what my grandma had, but if you can find what you're looking for…” You shrug, clasping your hands together. “Then, sure. It's a done deal.”
“Perfect. You're a lifesaver. My up-coming showcase is called ‘A glimpse into the Past’ and it's going to be filled with unique artworks based on antiques like those.” Then, Rafayel turns to grab the coin purse from Sylus, who promptly smacks his hand.
“Wait your turn, Betta.”
Seems like Sylus refuses to call Rafayel by his name…Either way, it's very odd to see the two of them interacting, however it makes sense. They're the only two that would ever step foot into the Nest, besides Xavier, of course.
“Has Velveteen* stopped by recently? I'm sure he'd love to find some air and space commemorative coins.” Rafayel speaks after he finally got his hands on your coin purse, dumping it out on the table in front of him to sift through the change.
“He just got done with a little hunter's mission, so I'm sure he's gone home for a nap.” Sylus taps his index finger against his temple before he looks through the bills in his hand.
Since all you could do was sit in silence, you could…theorize on who Velveteen is?
It's definitely a type of rabbit…and he's a hunter…and he takes a lot of naps…
There's no way they know Xavier, right?
Nah, that would be…Well, that would be crazy, but everything that's happened today could be considered crazy so it wouldn't be a long shot for Xavier and Velveteen to be the same person…
After a few hours of looking, you finally got your big paycheck. It was a surprisingly large amount of money, and you were left with no leftover coins or bills.
You tuck your cash filled wallet back into your back and stand up. As you do, Rafayel slips a business card into your hand.
“You have a phone, right?” As he asks, he takes his own out and looks at you expectantly. “You can come over to my studio and pick up the painting.”
“Ah…” You'd rather not risk running into yourself– Gemini – so after you type his number in and call him so he can save your number, you clear your throat. “I’d prefer to meet up at Meow’s cafe or in Azure Square, if that's alright.”
“Hmm? Oh, that's fine with me. See you later, Comet.” Rafayel pockets his phone and his three coins before he leaves.
You let out a sigh of relief and put on your backpack, getting ready to leave as well, but then a hand grabs your wrist. Your eyebrows furrow and you turn around with an annoyed look in your eyes before you realize Sylus is who grabbed you.
“You need something else?” You relax your face and glance down at his hand around your wrist.
“I saw you were looking for a place to stay. Try finding the Moonflower apartments. You might find what you're searching for there.” Sylus lets go of your hand with a small smile and you're left wondering what exactly he meant by that.
Once outside of the Nest, you first head to a convenience store to grab some essentials like food, a few drinks, a notepad, and a pen before you try to find a place to crash for the night.
As you walk down the sidewalk, a voice catches your attention.
“Excuse me, Miss?”
You turn in the direction and spot a woman. She looks about ten years older than your mom.
“Me?” You look around, pointing at your chest and she nods, beckoning you over.
While you felt this was a stupid idea, you decided to shove down your instincts and approach the woman. Once you were close enough, her hands darted out to grab your own.
“You seem familiar.” She questions. “You…don't appear to be from here.”
Your eyes widen and you try to pull away from her grip, but she's a lot stronger than she looks.
“What the hell is wrong with you!?”
Bop
“Ouch!” You cover your head with your hands as you pout. “Geez lady, what's your deal?” You rub the back of your head, your skull lightly throbbing from where she smacked you.
“You've got less manners than your mother.” She clicks her tongue, rubbing her palm with a thumb. She must've hurt her hand when she hit you– serves her right.
Wait–
“How did you know my mom?” You ask with a hand on your hip.
“I first met her twenty-four years ago on this very street.” The older woman muses. “She appeared just as confused as you are now…She reminded me of my late daughter, so I took her in for a few days. A few days turned to months…then a year. She told me everything. I was even by her side when she was pregnant with her–” she lightly hits your shoulder, “–ungrateful child.”
“I'm sorry, lady!” You hold your hands up in defeat. “I seriously didn't know who you were.”
“That's alright, dearie. I didn't expect you to…It was just an old crone's wishful thinking.” She laughs before it turns into a hacking cough. “Sorry, the name's Josephine. Enough with all of that, it seems you need a place to stay. Why don't you stay at your mom's old place? I haven't touched it since she left.”
“My mom's…place?” You echo her words. Your nails biting into your palm as your hand clenched into a fist and you quickly nodded your head. “Sure, where is it?”
“I'll take you there…It's room 013 at the Moonflower apartments.”
I know this is really short, but I'm hoping my moodboards and other posts will make up for it! <3 The next chapter will probably be around 2k or 3k, I'm not too sure yet. I've only barely started it.
I hope I didn't lose you on the old coins portion. I was looking up antique coins and I found a bunch of ones that would look pretty as artwork! You don't need to know what they look like to enjoy the story, though.
*Carrion— a species of crow, they're known to harass predators and competitors that come in their territory
*Betta— a type of fish, known for their aggressive personalities. These types of fish are also intelligent; able to make calculated decisions based on specific details
*Velveteen— a breed of rabbit, but also a children's story. This breed of rabbit is most active during dawn or dusk, and prefers to sleep during the day and evening; in the children's story, this rabbit is said to long for love and friendship.

believe this post, from WikiLeaks, is just breadcrumbs.
The next thing is a big meal.
I'm in constant touch until then..
Dear Constant Touch Anon,
I have to confess it took me about three minutes until the coin finally dropped and I got what you wanted to tell me. Well, I don't know if that first Wikileaks post (https://www.tumblr.com/sgiandubh/762677716492468224/away-in-our-little-scottish-bubble?source=share) was just breadcrumbs, but the fact is you are expecting a 'big meal' from me.
While you were taking the time to send me this, #silly me was blissfully antique shopping at one of those autumn fairs where you can easily ruin yourself. Shipper Mom and I are, in this regard, 'mad, bad and dangerous to know', since we do have a reputation for hauling various bits and bobs on transcontinental flights.
Today's delight were two unexpected gems sitting forlorn just near the entrance. A century-old, handpainted peasant dowry chest, from the South...
... and a 1880's Greek sailor chest (probably from one of those obscure island workshops, I would think Rhodes/the extended Dodecanese, which makes it incredibly rare) - I could not resist and I think it's pretty clear why:
Got both for about 120 USD, which is to say, an absolute bargain. With a little bit of TLC (-> Tender Loving Care), they will grace my living room and library (where I also sleep, work and write this very message to you), respectively.
So yes, all this to say I do have more and I will spill what is, well, spillable this evening.
Thank you for your patience.

Hello! For your event, I would like to request, please! Its a mix of the rules I guess? I got inspired by the prompts, hope that's ok!
Gifting Law a coin he did not have - sweet fluff.
Thank you!
Hello Anon,
It's always ok to get inspired by the prompts, that is a great request, I had a lot of fun with it ❤
This is part of the follower milestone event
If you like this story check out my masterlist
Here's
A coin for your thoughts
You use your alone time with Law to give him your newest find: a very rare coin with a rich history. His infodump can only be stopped with lots of kisses!
Sweet, fluffy, comforting
You found it in an antique shop - a rusty, small coin with peculiar pictures on it. One side showed a single lighthouse and a banner reading "mist island", the other showed various scientific tools engulfed by swirling tendrils of smoke - or mist?
As you looked at it the clerk gave you short information about the heritage of the coin, confirming your suspicion: the island, said to be situated in the new world, is shrouded in a mysterious mist that never lifts. Scientists from the world government tried to research it, a city was built, people moved there.
But after about 10 years, everyone on the island vanished without a trace. This coin was really, really rare. You employed all your skills to check for its authenticity, and went to great lengths to get it at a good price - eventually settling for a trade where you gave up a souvenir from your journeys in exchange.
With a big smile, you returned to the Polar Tang - what would Law say to it? Will he like it? Will he recognise it? His knowledge of the coins and their stories was vast, surely he knew more about it than the clerk.
You waited all day until it was time to retire to your shared room. Law sat down on his desk to "just read a little bit more" as he promised, but he wouldn't get the chance. You had cleaned and polished the coin until it looked brand new and the copper and silver alloy showed its beautiful colours.
Standing behind him, you looked over his shoulder - anatomy. He read the same books again and again and never got sick of them. You watched him trace the line of a muscle on the page with his finger, letting him finish following the inked picture to its end. When he was done, he looked behind and smiled at you, just breathing your name as he always did to tell you he was now there for you.
Without a word, you slipped the small trinket onto the page and prepared for his reaction. His blue eyes widened and his whole face changed to that of a little boy who just got the present of his life. He created a small frame with his thumb and index finger to hold the small coin to the light of his desk lamp.
"Mist island!" His voice was not the deep and sensual velvet you were used to. Instead, he sounded more boyish, his voice a higher pitch and with a vivid inflection of happiness.
Turning around the silvery object in his long, nimble fingers, he watched the light play around the edged lines, his thumb regularly brushing over the surface to feel the smoothness of the coin and follow the small pictures on it. He spent a long time studying the swirling mist, doubtlessly feeling every detail with his sensitive finger tips.
His mouth stood open in a silent smile as you watched him lovingly, seeing how much joy your gift brought him.
"Ah!" A short noise escaped him. "An impurity!" He pointed to the smallest imperfection in the material.
"You know this happens when the temperature changes to fast in production" he explained to you for what must the millionth time. But you didn't mind, he just loved talking about alloys and metal production. It was heralding the spill of information that was to follow.
Law pushed the chair back from the desk and collected you onto his lap, putting his arms around you so that you two were looking at the coin together. He rested his chin on your shoulder and pressed his cheek to your face. His beard tickled you as he spoke:
"The island was a scientific research centre to lift the mystery of the mist!" He explained close to your ear in his best nerd-voice, leaving a second to chuckle at his expert joke. He held up the side of the coin with the curling mist.
"Because the mist never lifted, it never even got thinner, the island was shrouded in darkness all day, all year. It was unusually thick. The lighthouse" - he turned the coin around - "was the strongest the marine ever built, but it could hardly penetrate the thick soup. Many ships broke on the perilous coast. The great marine scientist Prof Voltan tried to get to the bottom of it all and he vanished alongside his crew of scientists and all the inhabitants of the island in one night. The speculations are outlandish!" He laughed.
"There were even rumours about pre-existing structures on the island, full of unknown symbols and pictures..." his voice trailed off.
"But that's all nonsense!" He concluded, although he couldn't hide a bit of excitement in his voice. He was so adorable when he nerded about his interests. You couldn't help but to kiss his cheek and he smiled, but he didn't stop talking.
"You know they used a special tool to catch and analyse the mist" he explained, not letting your kisses down his jaw distract him. You turned around on his lap to straddle him and reach his kissable areas more easily.
He continued his lesson: "they called it the nebuloscope! It sucked in the mist" your mouth made a sucking sound as you worked on the soft skin of his neck " and the great problem was to build a container from where it couldn't..." he couldn't end the sentence, since you nibbled at the soft patch of skin on his neck that made him loose his mind without fail.
"It couldn't...i mean the couldn't...it wasnt...", he tried to continue a few more times but failed, his speech slurred into a pant.
"Babe stop that..." he panted as you mercilessly held his skin between your lips. However, you were in a good mood and stopped, for him.
He exhaled and shifted beneath you, as his little nerd brain whipped him to tell you even more of the island mystery: "the coin itself is made from ore found on the island, it's not exactly common silver and copper." You let him explain for a short while before kissing trails down his chest as you unbuttoned his shirt.
He leaned back with his brows creased and a whimper, and continued to dump all the info in his head onto you.
"The ore...had strange properties...marine...tried to harvest it...but..." the small movements you made with your hips seemed to steal the blood from his head and you opened his shirt to marvel at your boyfriend's chest. His eyes were pressed close as he struggled for control. He knew he would eventually lose but he held on bravely. He was just trying to get into iron smelting as you pressed soft kisses to his mouth, stopping the flow of words gently.
He put the coin on his desk and wrapped his arms around you, holding you close to carry you to the bed. As he laid you down and came to rest next to you, he began to repay the favour, nibbling on you ear.
"Thank you babe, I love you" he whispered into your ear and stopped talking for the night as he cuddled you happily. The rest of his speech would come tomorrow at breakfast .

Very Rare Emperor Constantine Silver Ingots Saved From Illegal Sale
A man allegedly tried to illegally sell three rare Roman-era silver ingots that his great-grandmother reportedly found in her garden years ago.
Three "truly sensational" Roman-era silver ingots depicting Constantine the Great were nearly sold illegally on the internet, a new investigation finds.
An unnamed man alleged that his great-grandmother found the rare artifacts buried in the family's backyard in Transcarpathia (also known as Zakarpattia), a region in western Ukraine. Later, the man reportedly tried to sell one of the silver bars online, according to Public Uzhgorod, Ukraine's public broadcast station.
However, officials from the museum intervened by reporting the attempted illegal sale to local law enforcement. When officers searched the home, they discovered two additional ingots. Because the ingots have "special cultural value," Ukraine's Office of the Prosecutor General has taken over the case, according to a translated statement from the National Museum of the History of Ukraine in Kyiv.
Each of the metal blocks, which are almost entirely pure silver, weighs more than 12 ounces (342 grams) and contains a coin-shaped impression of Emperor Constantine the Great on each side, according to the statement. Constantine, who ruled from A.D. 306 to 337, is known for ushering Christianity into the Roman Empire and moving his capital to "New Rome," which later became Constantinople (modern-day Istanbul).
The ingots would have been used during the minting process to strike coins known as siliquae. The coins with Constantine's likeness would have been issued between A.D. 310 and 313 in Augusta Treverorum, a Roman city that today is Trier, Germany. At one time, the pieces would have been batched together with a thin, silver ribbon, which has since been lost, according to the statement.
"Three ingots fastened together were supposed to be a gift for a very high-ranking person," Maksym Levada, a curator at the museum, said in the statement. "The fact that they were found outside the Roman Empire on the territory of modern Ukraine makes them an invaluable source of our past."
Experts estimate the treasure's value at 3.5 million Ukrainian hryvnia, or about $84,800.
"But what makes them unique is not the cost, but the fact that only a few similar ingots have been found in Europe to date," Andriy Kostin, Ukraine's prosecutor general, said in the statement.
There are about 90 known Roman silver ingots in existence today, with only 11 containing mint stamp impressions, making the three ingots' recovery even rarer, according to the statement.
Kyrylo Myzgin, an archaeologist and faculty member at the University of Warsaw who initially examined the ingots, said in an email that the finding "can be considered truly sensational."
"It is excellent news that they ended up in a museum rather than on the black market for antiquities," Myzgin said. "Roman silver ingots with coin die imprints are incredibl\y rare and were virtually unknown outside the Roman Empire. It is likely that these ingots reached the territory of what is now western Ukraine as a result of interactions between the local population — possibly Germanic tribes or Dacians [people in what is now largely modern-day Romania] — and the Roman Empire in the early 4th century. However, the exact nature of these interactions has yet to be determined."
The ingots are now on display in the museum's "Salvated Treasures" exhibition, which contains a collection of rescued artifacts.

So I got Curious™️ about which of my tarot decks rename the suits and court cards, sooo last night I went through and figured it out.
Seven decks change every (or nearly) every suit:
Antique Anatomy: Elixirs (Cups), Coins (Pentacles), Blades (Swords), Rods (Wands)
As Above: Water (Cups), Earth (Pentacles), Air (Swords), Fire (Wands)
Dungeons & Dragons (these are my estimations): Wisdom (Cups), Strength (Pentacles), Intelligence (Swords), Charisma (Wands)
Erotic: Shells (Cups), Roses (Pentacles), Feathers (Swords), Candles (Wands)
Kemetic: Ankhs (Cups), Scarabs (Pentacles), Swords, Scepters (Wands)
Skyrim: Voice (Cups), Lockpicks (Pentacles), Arms (Swords), Spells (Wands)
Wild Wood: Vessels (Cups), Stones (Pentacles), Arrows (Swords), Bows (Wands)
From what I can see, this is usually done to better tie the four suits and four elements into the deck's overall theme...for better or worse. The D&D Tarot doesn't outline which suit was replaced by what stat, I had to figure that out my own damn self.
Beyond those, a good number of my decks change Cups to Chalices or (more rarely) Vessels, while Pentacles usually gets turned into Coins:
China: Chalices (Cups), Pentacles, Swords, Wands
Cthulhu's Vault: Cups, Coins (Pentacles), Swords, Wands
Dark Grimoire: Chalices (Cups), Pentacles, Swords, Wands
Gay: Cups, Coins (Pentacles), Swords, Wands
In-Between: Cups, Coins (Pentacles), Swords, Wands
Manga: Chalices (Cups), Pentacles, Swords, Wands
Mystical Manga: Cups, Coins (Pentacles), Swords, Wands
Silver Witchcraft: Chalices (Cups), Pentacles, Swords, Wands
Star Spinner: Chalices (Cups), Coins (Pentacles), Swords, Wands
Tarot for Kids: Cups, Coins (Pentacles), Swords, Wands
Tarot of the Divine: Cups, Coins (Pentacles), Swords, Wands
Transient Light: Vessels (Cups), Coins (Pentacles), Swords, Wands
Now, why does this happen? Usually, it's to make the Pentacles seem more mundane and universal by turning them into Coins (which, I would argue, are better expressions of the suit of Earth than the Pentacle, since the Pentacle's thing seems to usually be a combination of the four major elements plus spirit or light or darkness or magic or whatever). Otherwise, it's to make the Cups seem more magical and occult by turning them into Chalices, though sometimes it makes it even more mundane by using Vessels instead.
Edit: I have been informed that Coins predate Pentacles as a tarot suit thanks to the Tarot de Marseille, so I'll take the L on that. It does make the fact that Pentacles are now the default so fascinating, though, as it seems like even pip-style decks have more in common with RWS tarot than Marseille...more fun stuff to research!
As for renaming the court cards, well, usually the whole court gets a face lift:
As Above: Elemental (Page), Maiden (Knight), Mother (Queen), Crone (Queen)
Gay: Youth (Page), Man (Knight), Guide (Queen), Sage (King)
Kemetic: Scribe (Page), Warrior (Knight), Queen, King
Manga (part of what this deck does is genderbend every card in the deck): Prince (Page), Princess (Knight), King (Queen), Queen (King)
Transient Light: Apprentice (Page), Champion (Knight), Keeper (Queen), Crown (King).
The most common single-card renaming among my decks is turning the Page into the Knave alone, which happens in three different decks I own: the China Tarot, the Dark Grimoire Tarot, and the Vice Versa Tarot. The Tarot of Dragons' only renaming is turning the King into the Sire. Some decks, such as the Myths & Legends Tarot, swaps the King and Queen's placement in the guidebook to make the Queen the leader of the suit, but it doesn't actually swap the meanings of them.
Despite all of this, 21 of the 43 (42 unique) tarot decks I own still follow the "default" of Cups, Pentacles, Swords, Wands and Page, Knight, Queen, King for the suits and courts.
TLDR: I did too much work last night on something that doesn't matter in the long run and I'm making all of you read it anyway.

So Tragic and Rare
May (pt. 18)
previous part 🧡 next part masterlist
Rolling Stone Magazine
Keely Halloran is unapologetic. That much is for certain.
Ever since her return to the music scene, Halloran has been upfront about exactly who she is. “It’s honorable,” says Sabrina Carpenter, who has been friends with Halloran for year, back when Halloran was still known as the ‘Pop Princess.’ “Every musician is – at some point – told that you need to enhance certain aspects of yourself while dimming others to make yourself marketable. But Keely rebelled against that idea and she’s successful as ever. I think we could all learn from her.”
But in this, the first interview the rockstar has given since the release of her fourth studio album VINDICTIVE, Halloran reveals a different side to her, confessing that the bravado that many found so admirable may have its downsides.
For most of the year, Halloran has been sticking to locations that she finds comfortable: her recording studio in New York, the stages and suites in TD Garden, even the SNL studios (where Halloran has been invited to thrice now). The rockstar keeps herself busy but for the weekend, she has invited me to come to her hometown of Boston and spend some time in her company.
Today, she has taken me to one of her favorite spots in the historic American city; a cemetery (even now, she is unapologetically herself).
Even though we’re practically strangers, being around Halloran feels like catching up with a childhood friend. She picked me up from the hotel in her blue Nissan Qashqai a car that she explains lets her move around the crowded streets of Boston discreetly – and in the front cupholders sat a Flat White for me and a Rose Matcha for her from her favorite café, Jonquils on Newbury Street. On the drive, she asked me questions about my life while her playlist filtered through the speakers. We start with Lizzy McAlpine and end with Fleetwood Mac.
She’s wearing jeans and a sweatshirt and told me to dress casually as well. “It’s a cemetery, not the Ritz,” she said, laughing over the phone yesterday when I called to confirm our plans. “I promise, the ghosts won’t care.”
Even though the ghosts may not care about our attire, Halloran makes sure to leave an offering of coins at the first headstone in the cemetery, the plot belonging to ‘the gatekeeper’ who watches over the other spirits residing in the yard. “It’s just something that I learned,” she explains to me, taking a small sip of her drink. “As someone who’s dependent on security guards, I can understand the need for protection.”
It feels almost like she is a character out of fairytale, passed down from antiquity, as she walks along the paths of the cemetery, the early morning summer air ruffling her hair. Those closest to her say that that is a normal feeling to experience, though. Abigail Avignone, her childhood friend who has found success in the interior design business, told me that “No matter how much time you spend with her, you’ll always feel like you’re missing something.”
That’s is truly how it feels. Even though she has been in the spotlight for years and has had her face plastered on magazines, billboards, and every social media site, no one really knows anything about her.
“Once you enter the entertainment industry - music, television, what have you - it's widely accepted that everything about you is now public domain. From the choices you make, to the things you create, to the people you spend time with - hell, even the clothes you wear... it’s all fair game for comment and criticism,” Halloran muses when I broach the subject. “They turn you into a character for whatever narrative they think will sell.”
When I offered praise on how she has been able to push back against that with her reinvention, she just offers a wry smile.
“That wasn’t their narrative – it was mine. And I peddled and sold it just as hard as they do. It was far from the truth. There was never any healing: I was angry still, I was distrustful, I was the exact opposite of what everyone thought I was. I wasn’t being brave. I was scared. I didn’t want to expose the scars that were still healing. My wounds are mine to press on, not theirs.”
Halloran leads me to the greenhouse where she talks to an employee about the small arrangements of flowers prepared for visitors to take and place on the gravestones. The older woman smiles and laughs with Halloran as if they knew each other for years before they are interrupted by a young teenage girl. The teen asks Halloran for a photo which she happily obliges. When she wanders away, head buried back in her cell-phone, Halloran turns to me with the bouquet of white lilies in her hands.
“Hope you’re ready to star in the news stories tomorrow,” she laughs, the sound bright but cutting.
The two of us walk further into the cemetery, me following along as she takes confident turns on the winding path before stopping in front of the grave that belongs to Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.
“I’ve grown really fond of his works,” Halloran explains, placing the flowers down in front of the headstone. “For a poet from the 1800’s, he actually has some great insight to the life of a celebrity. ‘We judge ourselves by what we feel capable of doing, while other judge us by what we have already done.’ That one resonated with me because a few months ago, that was my life. People judged me based on their limited knowledge of my life. All while I knew the truth.”
She mentions therapy, something that she recently brought into her life, calling it one of the greatest investments that she has made in her career as we continue to walk through the expansive plot of land.
“There are plenty of things that I would go back and change. I caused a lot of hurt because I, myself, was hurt. But it was also Longfellow that said ‘look not mournfully into the past, it comes not back again.’ If there is anything that anyone can take from this interview, I want it to be that: all that’s left is the present moment and what you do with it.”
Tomorrow, she plans head to her studio in New York. She tells me she’s happy to go back because it was how she processes her feelings, both big and small. Her therapist said this is her practicing displacement; a psychological defense mechanism that involves redirecting an emotion or impulse from it’s original source to a safer more acceptable outlet. She jokes that that is something she’s been doing long before she knew the official name.
In a few hours, she’ll be back in her Beacon Hill brownstone, cuddled up on the couch with her dog Gigi watching re-runs of The Great British Bake-Off – she has been perfecting her own desserts and uses the show for inspiration. But for now, we wander the cemetery, enjoying the warming summer day and pretending the rest of the world doesn’t exist.
