Just saw a random article pop up with the headline “It’s time to stop seeing only the dark side of crypto” and I’m just like okay ma’am, first, the fact that you’re acknowledging crypto even has a dark side just killed your entire argument dead. Second, I’ve seen enough of that “dark side” to know that there is literally no amount of good that crypto could do that would offset how terrible it is for the environment, for the Internet, and for society. Now excuse me while I go running through a bitmine warehouse with a fuckoff huge magnet.

Why I fell into this Crypto Rabbit Hole

“I don’t need to learn anything about crypto I will never touch it.”

I swore up and down in Janurary of 2022 as a partner tried to convince me to learn more about it.

In April I started a new position doing the the work I always dreamed, Technical Documentation...at a company that dealt with exchanging cash for crypto.

The reasoning behind the job shift, and me accepting the role is complicated, and a story for a different time. It was not an easy decision to make. But I made it and I found myself here.

Life handed me bowl full of Lemons, with labels like Bitcoin, Etherium, USDT.

Unexpectedly I have found myself needing to learn the technical side of cryptocurrency. An industry I never wanted anything to do with.

What I found when I started looking was convoluted.

Cryptocurrencies have established into the global ecosystem. It has impact whether we want it to or not.

Yet it is difficult to find explanations that aren’t trying to convince you of something when it comes to crypto. The forums, websites and videos that I have found fall one of two ways: those Radically for it and those Radically against it.

Technical explanations exist but it is always peppered with words that ascribe how one should feel about. Typically attached to a crypto company trying to evangelize crypto further, or to those trying to destroy it completely. Accessibility to the explanation of the technology is behind this wall of having to be for it or against it.

So I’m taking notes from all of these and forming my own opinion.

And if I have to learn all of this, sift through other peoples opinions to find the technical words, and to simplify what I find so that I understand it.

I might as well put my notes somewhere.

Might as well make some lemonade.
