If citizens are to participate effectively in running the country in which they dwell, they must have an appropriate education. Therefore, even in the elementary school in the Soviet Union the visitor is struck by the extent to which the student is treated as a citizen. Corporal punishment is forbidden by law in the Soviet schools, and other punishment in any form is practically non-existent. The children are taught to look upon the teachers, not as vested with an almost supernatural authority, but as human beings like themselves, who have more experience. The headmaster or headmistress of a Soviet school is a senior comrade, who holds a position of such authority only by virtue of ability and good leadership. Everything possible is done in the Soviet schools to bring the children into contact with the everyday life of the country. Their lessons include knowledge of current political questions and of industry and agriculture. In their spare time, facilities are provided in the schools and other institutions for hobbies such as natural history or engineering, literature or sport. The important fact in this connection is that the Soviet child is encouraged to take his hobbies seriously, and is given the possibility of doing useful work which may have positive value. Thus, groups of “Young Inventors” attached to Soviet schools, turn out some hundreds of inventions annually. And in the Moscow Zoo a group of child helpers participates in the research work that is being carried on there. And once, on May and, a public holiday, the direction of traffic in the city of Kiev was in the hands of the children of the city. And the children in all the larger towns have their own theaters and cinemas, run by the Commissariat of Education in conjunction with the local school authorities. At the children’s theaters the children are expected not only to be spectators but to criticize the performances and to make suggestions for their improvement. The Moscow children’s theaters arrange meetings between children and writers, at which writers read their latest children’s stories, and discuss their merits with the children prior to publication. The children learn to play a part in determining the kind of books that are going to be published for them. These examples, taken at random from the life of Soviet children today, serve to emphasize the fact that the Soviet child is a citizen from his earliest days, receiving the respect of other citizens, and with the opportunity to utilize his or her spare time in some useful hobby which may be of actual scientific or artistic value.

"I saw a recent meeting of the Council of Ministers on TV. I was sitting there in front of the television, feeling sorry for myself, feeling indignant. Poor Ryzhkov! He was saying: Comrades, it is impossible to go on like this, if it continues like this the country will be devastated, destroyed. We need order, legality... But why agitate the people like this? Why scare them? The prime minister should reveal the names of those responsible, make the scoundrels who corrupt, who do not send food or material supplies, put them on trial, send those scoundrels to prison for ten years... Instead, there is general whining. I hear another minister saying: Since 1988, goods have been disappearing from such and such a port. But where have you been, minister, all this time? How did you allow such a thing? And every time, at the end of these discussions, they say that what is happening in the country is the fault of... Stalin. This is the moral of every speech: Stalin is guilty, it was Stalin, Stalin, Stalin, everyone is on him. But Stalin died thirty-five years ago! Thirty-five years! What does he have to do with today's troubles? Many people remember Stalinism with horror... The people are always ill-disposed towards what was in the past. So it is said that all those who once commanded were monsters. Stalin - a monster. Molotov - a monster. Kalinin - a monster. Kaganovich - a monster. The whole past is besmirched, absolutely everything, to the point of criticizing the October Revolution. Of course, the people have good reasons to protest, to be discontent. But the people must be led by the hand, they must be led, as they used to say in the past, not with a metal club, but with ideology. With ideas. With the compactness of the party."
Lazar Kaganovich commenting on the Gorbachev administration's failure to tackle party and state corruption as the Soviet economic crisis of 1988 worsened into a general political crisis in 1990

Throwing the door open for oppressed people: Bolshevik Revolution changed the world forever
By Stephen Millies
The Bolsheviks fought pogroms with guns in hand. Lenin waged war on racism. He enriched Marxism by teaching that workers in the big capitalist countries had to support revolts in the colonies.

I'm just gonna say it: I have very mixed feelings about the Soviet Union.
On the one hand, the Soviet Union has been a special interest of mine since I was about sixteen and I love learning about Soviet history, especially regarding the Soviet space programme but also just things about the way people lived. I love Soviet music and the few Soviet movies I've seen. As something of a leftist I like how the Soviet Union made advances in education and worker's rights that were only possible in a socialist system. Soviet women had rights long before women in capitalist countries did. I find the ethos of the Russian dreamers of the early Soviet Union quite inspirational. As I'm applying for jobs I've caught myself wishing I lived in the USSR and could just be assigned a job upon finishing my degree. I also unironically want to live in a society where jeans are banned.
But I know I wouldn't last a day in the Soviet Union, and ultimately I'm glad that the Soviet Union collapsed because it meant the end of oppressive Russian imperialism in Ukraine and the Baltics (at least for some time). Stalin was an asshole who attempted multiple genocides: against the Ukrainians, the Crimean Tatars, the Jews. Arguably Stalin's genocide against the Ukrainians influenced modern-day Russia's genocide against the Ukrainians. Soviet antisemitism still kills Jews today, since the Soviet Union was behind the creation of Palestinian nationalist groups. Overall, despite everyone officially being equal, there was a lot of racism against anyone who wasn't ethnically Russian. So many people suffered under the gulag system, which was not what internet slavaboos would have you think it was. So many people lived meaningless lives, no different than their counterparts in capitalist countries. And although the Russian Empire was an oppressive empire that one should not long to return to, the Soviet determination to put it on the ashpile of history killed the few good things that came out of the Russian Empire: the literature and philosophy, a prominent vegetarianism movement that was denounced as bourgeois, the Mir commune which was an actual communist community.
Why am I saying all of this about a long extinct country that no one in my family ever lived in? I just be like that.
